  1. Cyclone Garance kills three as it sweeps through Reunion island Cyclone Garance kills three as it sweeps through Reunion island Getty Images Three people have died in Reunion after Cyclone Garance swept through the French Indian Ocean territory with gusts of up to 234km/h (145mph). The tropical cyclone left more than 180,000 homes without power and 170,000 without running water after making landfall on Friday morning. The remote island’s entire population – including emergency services and police – were ordered to stay indoors as the maximum alert level was imposed. Heavy storm rains were expected to continue on Friday evening, with Prime Minister Francois Bayrou warning on X that the cyclone remained a threat. The “brutal and violent” conditions were worse than Cyclone Belal, which killed four people on the island in January 2024, Prefect Patrice Latron said. Garance made landfall in the north of Reunion at 10:00 local time (06:00 GMT), before sweeping south and exiting the island by late afternoon, according to weather agency Meteo France. Local authorities reduced the alert level by midday to allow emergency services and police to leave their shelters. The top wind speed of 234km/h had not been recorded on the island since Cyclone Hollanda in February 1994. Getty Images Cyclone Garance made landfall in the remote Indian Ocean island on Friday morning Vincent Clain, 45, a resident of the island’s northern coast, told news agency AFP: “This is the first time I’ve seen a cyclone this powerful, and also the first time I’ve been afraid.” Some 100 troops and firefighters were on standby to be dispatched from the French territory of Mayotte nearly 1,500km (930 miles) away when conditions eased, as well as 100 from mainland France. Meanwhile, a 55-year-old man went missing in nearby Mauritius on Wednesday after going swimming in rough seas. France’s Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said Friday that Garance was of a “rare intensity”, while Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu said armed forces stood ready to provide assistance. 3. FAA clears SpaceX for Starship test flight after explosion in January FAA clears SpaceX for Starship test flight after explosion in January SpaceX’s Super Heavy booster is seen on the launch pad, without the Starship atop, as it is prepared for launch from the company’s Boca Chica launchpad on an uncrewed test flight, near Brownsville, Texas, U.S. Feb. 27, 2025. Joe Skipper | Reuters Elon Musk’s SpaceX has attained authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration to fly its massive Starship rocket once again, the space regulator announced on Friday. The Starship rocket broke up during the company’s seventh test flight in January. The explosion caused debris to rain down over Turks and Caicos, and forced several commercial flights to be diverted or delayed, CNBC previously reported. The FAA granted the modified license to SpaceX, which has a $350 billion private market valuation, even though the company has yet to complete its mishap investigation, required after the January explosion. The space regulator has previously authorized flights by companies including SpaceX and Rocket Lab while mishap investigations were still underway, a spokesperson told CNBC by email. Last year, the FAA fined SpaceX $633,009 in civil penalties for what it alleged were safety and procedural violations in the leadup to two 2023 launches. SpaceX was also fined by the Environmental Protection Agency for polluting waters in Texas in violation of the Clean Water Act. After those fines, Musk threatened to sue the FAA for “regulatory overreach” but never filed a complaint. Musk, the world’s wealthiest person, contributed nearly $300 million to help propel President Donald Trump back to the White House, and is now a central figure in the administration. Musk, who is also CEO of Tesla and the owner of social media company X, leads the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is implementing draconian staffing and budget cuts across the federal government, and targeting regulatory agencies that oversee Musk’s businesses. Orange ****** of light fly across the sky as debris from a SpaceX rocket launched in Texas is spotted over Turks and Caicos Islands on Jan. 16, 2025. Marcus Haworth@marcusahaworth | Marcus Haworth Via Reuters The role has afforded Musk and his DOGE staffers unprecedented access to federal computer systems and data including within the FAA. SpaceX has been selected to help overhaul the FAA’s air traffic control system, Trump’s Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy previously announced. Senators Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill) sent a letter on Friday to FAA’s acting administrator Chris Rocheleau, raising concerns about conflicts of interest. SpaceX didn’t respond to a request for comment. Starship, the tallest and most powerful rocket ever launched, is critical to SpaceX’s ambitions. When it’s stacked on the Super Heavy booster, Starship stands 403 feet tall and is about 30 feet in diameter. SpaceX has flown the full Starship rocket system on seven spaceflight tests so far since April 2023. The company wrote in a social media post that it aims to conduct its eighth Starship test flight as soon as Monday, March 3. 4. GB News wins Ofcom legal challenge over Jacob Rees-Mogg shows GB News wins Ofcom legal challenge over Jacob Rees-Mogg shows GB News has won its judicial review of decisions made by TV watchdog Ofcom, that two shows hosted by Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg breached the broadcasting code. The High Court judgment by Mrs Justice Collins Rice concluded that Ofcom’s rulings were unlawful. It is the first time the watchdog has lost such a case. The judgement said Ofcom’s initial rulings – that the 9 May and 13 June 2023 broadcasts were in breach of its codes on “due impartiality and due accuracy in news” – were unlawful. GB News CEO Angelos Frangopoulos said the decision “vindicates GB News’ position as the fearless defender of free speech in the United Kingdom”, while Ofcom said it “accepted the court’s guidance”. Mr Frangopoulos added: “I call on the government and Parliament to consider the seriousness of this fundamental failure by Ofcom.” The judge’s ruling stated: “I am minded to quash the two decisions in this case, and remit them to be reconsidered by Ofcom, subject to whatever further procedure may be fairly indicated.” The court found that Ofcom had misapplied Rule 5.3 of the code, saying the provision only applies to “news programmes” and not to current affairs shows, such as the one Sir Jacob hosts. The decisions had been made as part of five GB News rulings by Ofcom in March last year, including three about shows hosted by Esther McVey and Philip Davies. Ofcom’s rulings had said the State of the Nation shows hosted by Sir Jacob broke rules stating politicians should not usually front news coverage. The Ofcom code says a politician can’t be a newsreader, interviewer or reporter in a news programme “unless, exceptionally, it is editorially justified”. They can, however, front current affairs shows. At the time, Sir Jacob was the Conservative MP for North East Somerset. During the programmes, the “host politicians acted as newsreaders, news interviewers or news reporters in sequences which clearly constituted news – including reporting breaking news events – without exceptional justification”, according to Ofcom investigations last year. The regulator concluded at the time: “News was, therefore, not presented with due impartiality.” But GB News responded to the rulings, saying: “These decisions go against established precedent and raises serious questions about Ofcom’s oversight over its own regulations.” Ofcom said on Friday: “We accept the court’s guidance on this important aspect of due impartiality in broadcast news and the clarity set out in its judgment. “We will now review and consult on proposed changes to the broadcasting code to restrict politicians from presenting news in any type of programme to ensure this is clear for all broadcasters.” GB News said after the court quashed the decisions that the court had ordered Ofcom to pay its legal costs incurred in the proceedings. 5. Halo Infinite is Adding a Search & Destroy Mode This Year Halo Infinite is Adding a Search & Destroy Mode This Year The Halo team announced today that S&D Extraction, a round-based competitive mode based on tactical shooters and Call of Duty’s Search & Destroy mode, is coming to Halo Infinite in 2025. S&D Extraction will be a part of Halo Infinite’s esports scene, and a $20,000 contest for maps for the new mode will be held as well. S&D Extraction is Halo Infinite’s take on popular tactical shooters like CS2, VALORANT, or Call of Duty’s Search & Destroy. The Halo Infinite mode’s full name, Seek and Deploy, is a clear reference to popular bomb plant/defusal mode from Call of Duty. In S&D Extraction, teams of four take turns on offense and defense. The offense tries to “initiate an Extraction” (plant the bomb) on one of two sites, while the defending aims to stop them by defeating all opponents or “converting” (defusing). An S&D Extraction consists of 11 rounds, meaning the first team to win six wins. Like CS2 or VALORANT, players have to manage an economy in between and during rounds of S&D Extraction. Players earn credits for planting or defusing the bomb and getting kills, but can also secure extra credits at “neutral devices on the map.” Between rounds, players can buy weapons, grenades, equipment, and power equipment like Active Camo, Drop Wall, or Threat Sensor. A unique mechanic coming to S&D Extraction in Halo Infinite is a buy back mechanic, something that’s not common in other tac shooters. Players that have died in a round and have enough credits can “buy back” into the round, respawning at the spawn point with a base loadout. While exact numbers aren’t clear, the team at Halo Studios says buying back will be expensive, and will require several rounds of saving credits to afford. As mentioned at the top of the article, a $20,000 S&D Extraction map contest is being held by Halo Studios and ForgeHub. Halo Studios has also hired Forge community mapmakers Artifice and Mikrips to build the mode and its custom map. The first look at the new mode is scheduled for the FaZe Kaysan Invitational on March 29, and will be broadcast on the official Halo Twitch channel. Halo Infinite has seen dwindling player numbers for some time now. Is this enough to give the player base a much needed spike? 7. AMD has been working with us to integrate these features “AMD has been working with us to integrate these features” 2025 has been a great year for video games and gaming tech alike, with multiple blockbuster AAA and indie titles being released. We’re just 3 months into 2025, and we already have a solid look at some upcoming titles, such as The Witcher 4 – as well as one of its competitors, Crimson Desert. Interestingly, Crimson Desert also sits on the polar end of the GPU alignment spectrum, taking a clear preference to Team Red as opposed to CD Projekt Red’s Team Green. A recently showcased demo shortlisted a few features with upcoming AMD tech in mind, refreshers for which will be provided below. Crimson Desert to feature AMD specific tech and optimizations Crimson Desert features AMD tech | Image Credit: Pearl Abyss As detailed within the approximately 30 minute long live preview from AMD, Crimson Desert is set to receive a set of AMD enhanced features and tech – produced directly in collaboration with the former. This was part of AMD’s showcase of their RDNA 4 architecture and RX 9000 series GPU today, which broke the internet. Naturally, AI-assisted upscaling techniques come into play when designing modern GPUs, and AMD has chosen Crimson Desert for an exclusive sneak peek into the future. The game will feature almost all of AMD’s upcoming RDNA 4 enhanced tech – including FSR 4. FSR 4 is expected to be a lot more powerful when compared to FSR 3, taking full advantage of hardware-based compute units to deliver upscaled images comparable to that of XeSS and DLSS. Additionally, the RX 9000’s superior ray tracing capabilities mean that Crimson Desert should have very realistic, reactive lighting – right down to the steel clashing between battles. The game will also make full use of the RX 9070 and 9070 XT’s ample computational horsepower to deliver a reactive, breathing game world with intricate detail and texture work. RDNA 4 GPUs are here | Image Credit: AMD All of this combined results in a very playable experience at 4K resolutions, with little to no compromise with regards to image quality. This is regardless of the complexity of the scene, or of the enemies rendered at a given time. The game has been built with both Ryzen and Radeon hardware in mind – and should perform very well on modern systems. AMD’s killer move could just be FSR 4 AMD could have a winner on its hands | Image Credit: AMD Nvidia’s DLSS upscaling tech has been unmatched ever since its conception. While AMD’s FSR tech is certainly capable, it just isn’t on the same level as DLSS, at least until very recently. FSR 4 seems to solve most issues plaguing FSR 3.1 and lower versions, partly thanks to its use of RDNA 4 specific hardware accelerators that help approximate an image way faster and with greater precision. Coupled with FSR being usable on almost all GPUs, this is a surefire recipe for success and AMD could very well have its own trump card here. The only thing thus remaining is its widespread adoption – after all, not even FSR 3.1 has been adopted in most games (as opposed to DLSS and DLAA), and FSR 4 is bound to take some time. With GPU agnostic upscaling tech, AMD’s FSR 4 could tip the scales in its favor and give people less of a reason to purchase Nvidia products. Take a Wild Guess Who Bezos Met With After Washington Post Change Take a Wild Guess Who Bezos Met With After Washington Post Change Billionaire Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos had a sit-down with Trump the same day of his right-wing crackdown on the opinion desk, according to The Spectator’s interview with the president. “A lot of the people who played a significant role in that election, and particularly on the tech side of things, have come around to support you,” The Spectator’s Ben Domench said to Trump. “Unbelievable. I had dinner with Jeff Bezos last night,” Trump replied, before going on to describe Bezos and the rest of the MAGA billionaires as “smart guys.” The Spectator conducted the interview on Thursday, meaning Bezos met with the president just hours after he announced a MAGA makeover of The Washington Post. Bezos announced Wednesday that the opinion editor David Shipley would be resigning and that the Post’s opinion desk would only be focusing on “writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets.” The pivot was a culmination of multiple ideological steps toward MAGA that the paper has taken over the last few months. 10. Jose Mourinho: Fenerbahce manager files lawsuit against Galatasaray after Istanbul derby Jose Mourinho: Fenerbahce manager files lawsuit against Galatasaray after Istanbul derby Jose Mourinho has filed a lawsuit against Galatasaray after the club accused him of making racist statements. The Fenerbahce manager was accused by Galatasaray of making racist statements after Monday’s Istanbul derby and, on Tuesday, the Portuguese’s Turkish club released a statement saying his comments had been taken “completely taken out of context”. On Friday, Fenerbahce said Mourinho was filing a 1,907,000 Turkish Lira lawsuit, through the club’s lawyers, against Galatasaray “due to the attack on the personal rights” of the Portuguese coach. The amount – which is worth around £41,000 – is symbolic as 1907 is the year Fenerbahce Sports Club was founded. Speaking in the news conference after Monday’s 0-0 draw, Mourinho said the home bench had been “jumping like monkeys” and also repeated his criticism of Turkish referees, saying it would have been a “disaster” to use an official from the country. The match was refereed by Slovenian Slavko Vincic after both clubs requested a foreign official take charge of the fixture. On Thursday, Mourinho was banned for four games and fined a total of £35,194 by the Turkish Football Federation for two separate disciplinary matters. The TFF said it was penalising him for “his derogatory and offensive statements towards the Turkish referee” and because he “accused Turkish football of chaos and disorder with insulting and offensive statements towards both the Turkish football community and all Turkish referees”. His comments included him saying that “after the big dive in the first minute and their bench jumping like monkeys on the top of the kid… with a Turkish referee you would have a yellow card after one minute and after five minutes I would have to change [substitute] him”. The TFF said “the statements used towards the members of the opposing team were contrary to the ethics of sports and the concept of fair play, contained expressions that could encourage violence and disorder in sports, were divisive and separatist in society and could cause fan incidents”. The 88-year-old pope responded well, with a good level of gas exchange, and remained conscious and alert at all times, the ******** said in its late update. The development marked a setback in what had been two successive days of increasingly upbeat reports from doctors treating Francis at Rome’s Gemelli hospital since Feb. 14. The episode, which occurred in the early afternoon, resulted in a “sudden worsening of the respiratory picture.” Doctors decided to keep his prognosis as guarded. 2:20 Pope Francis’ health brings ‘anxiety and concern’ about Catholic Church’s future The ******** has already made alternative plans for Ash Wednesday next week, making clear Francis still had a long road ahead. 14. Stock market next week: Outlook for March 3-7 Stock market next week: Outlook for March 3-7 Investors could use a break heading into a new month, but there are no shortage of obstacles ahead, including next week’s February jobs report and looming tariff deadlines. Stocks are in a different place at the end of February than at the start. Late Friday, the S & P 500 was down nearly 3% on the month and 2.4% lower this week after tariff threats and waning megacap tech stocks dented confidence in markets already priced for perfection. Tariffs will also loom large in the week ahead, with President Donald Trump this week vowing that 25% levies on Mexico and Canada will go into effect Tuesday, March 4, along with an additional 10% on China. Recent economic data has came in soft, further spooking investors. The macroeconomic picture will grow more important in March, as investors move on from earnings season and look ahead to the Federal Reserve meeting on the 18th and 19th. Hopes center on price data weak enough to support the central bank’s rate cutting path and an economy strong enough to avoid concerns about growth and profits. “The last couple of weeks has shown that the market is anxious,” said John Belton, portfolio manager at Gabelli Funds. “The data kind of supports the valuations, but probably valuations that didn’t adequately price in some of the uncertainty that comes with a new administration.” “The market’s really going to be analyzing any data more than normal in this environment,” Belton said. .SPX 5D mountain S & P 500 over the past week On Friday, the major averages were headed for a week of losses, with the S & P 500 on pace to notch its worst weekly performance of 2025. Late Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was lower by 0.4% and the the Nasdaq Composite slid by 5.2% on the week. The drop was sharper on a monthly basis. In February, the 30-stock Dow slid nearly 3% while the tech-heavy Nasdaq lost about 5.7%. February jobs report The February jobs report next week is expected to show that the labor market is easing, with fewer jobs being created and businesses capping new hires. Economists expect that the U.S. economy added 160,000 jobs last month, up from 143,000 jobs in January, with the unemployment rate holding at 4.0%, according to FactSet. Thomas Simons, chief U.S. economist at Jefferies, expects an in-line to slightly cooler report won’t do much to move stocks, insofar as it doesn’t drastically change what markets are pricing in for interest rates. Markets were last pricing in two or three quarter-point cuts later this year, possibly starting in June, according to CME Group data based on interest rate futures trading. The bar for a drastic change in rate cut expectations is fairly high, Simons noted. Given that Fed Chair Jerome Powell has repeatedly said that the central bank is in “no hurry” to lower rates, policymakers will need several months of negative payrolls, as well as an unemployment rate above 4.5%, maybe approaching 5%, for the Fed to start getting more accommodative, he said. Still, Simons, who said he remains optimistic longer term is nevertheless downshifting his expectations for growth for the first half of 2025. He said further economic weakness in the first six months will be supportive of the Fed cutting three times this year, instead of the two the central bank projected in December. In particular, the economist is awaiting the impact of cuts to the federal workforce ordered by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which he expects could start showing up in the March jobs report due out in April. “In the next six months, I think that it’s more likely than not that we’ll end up, you know, seeing more of the downside risk manifest rather than upside,” Simons said. Ides of March As it is, investors are wary of weakness in the months to come. While many remain confident the major stock averages can notch sizable advances this year, they’re less confident in the near-term picture given the uncertainty around Trump’s trade policies. Seasonally speaking, the month presents its own challenges. March is the fifth best month of the year for the S & P 500, typically averaging a 1.1% advance, and a 0.8% rise in a post-election year, according to the Stock Trader’s Almanac. However, in recent years, the month has seen some “wild fluctuations,” typically starting out bullish before upward momentum gives way later in the month, the Almanac showed. Elsewhere, economists next week will monitor the February ISM manufacturing numbers, as well as the January trade balance, which together could give some early indication as to whether the effort to reshore manufacturing to the U.S from abroad is taking effect. 16. How To Get The Best Monster Hunter Wilds Armor How To Get The Best Monster Hunter Wilds Armor Among all the options, we feel that the Guardian Ebony and Guardian Arkveld are the best armors in Monster Hunter Wilds. These are our picks for the Low Rank segment of the game, though you do need to spend several hours just to reach this part of the campaign. Our guide discusses everything you need to know about how to acquire these gear pieces. Monster Hunter Wilds best armor guide – Guardian Ebony and Guardian Arkveld set Both the Guardian Ebony and Guardian Arkveld armor sets can be yours fairly late into the campaign (roughly after a dozen hours or so of playing). Prior to this part, we suggest doing the following: Guardian Ebony armor set Eventually, you should reach the Ruins of Wyveria, where you’ll get to battle Guardian-type monsters. The key factor that differentiates these beasts from their normal counterparts is that they can channel energy to heal/close their wounds. This means you need to be quick in destroying their wounds so you can cause as much damage and grab as many materials as possible. As for the Guardian Ebony set, the materials needed for this come from the Ebony Odogaron creature. We feel that it’s the best armor in Monster Hunter Wilds because three pieces from the set–i.e. helmet, gloves, and belt/pants–grant the Burst perk. This provides a boost to your physical and elemental attack if you continuously land hits. If you can equip three parts to have the level 3 skill, then the bonus will be more significant, too. Furthermore, the set bonus when wearing four gear pieces activates the Ebony Odogaron’s Power. It increases your attack power and the duration of the Burst buff. In any case, here are the required materials: Helmet: 1x Guardian Ebony Claw, 1x Guardian Ebony Fang, and 1x Guardian Ebony Tail. Chestpiece: 2x Guardian Ebony Sinew and 1x Guardian Ebony Fang. Gloves: 2x Guardian Ebony Scale, 2x Guardian Ebony Sinew, and 1x Guardian Ebony Fang. Coil/pants: 1x Guardian Ebony Odogaron Certificate, 1x Guardian Ebony Tail, 1x Guardian Ebony Claw, and 1x Guardian Ebony Plate. Boots: 2x Guardian Ebony Scale and 1x Guardian Ebony Claw. The Guardian Ebony Odogaron is weak against the water element and paralysis status effect. Guardian Arkveld armor set We also feel that Guardian Arkveld is one of the best Monster Hunter Wilds armor sets due to the Flayer perk. Flayer makes it easier to inflict wounds, as well as additional non-elemental damage. Moreover, the 4-piece bonus nets you the Guardian Arkveld’s Vitality perk, which restores your HP whenever you destroy wounds on a large monster. These boons make this armor set great for offense and survivability. You do need the following materials: Helmet: 1x Guardian Blood, 2x Guardian Rathalos Webbing, and 1x Guardian Scale. Chestpiece: 1x Guardian Blood, 2x Guardian Ebony Claw, and 3x Tough Guardian Bone. Gloves: 1x Guardian Blood, 2x Guardian Scale, and 2x Guardian Seikret Feather. Coil/pants: 1x Guardian Blood, 2x Guardian Doshaguma Claw, and 1x Guardian Pelt. Boots: 1x Guardian Blood and 2x Guardian Pelt. Don’t worry too much about having to farm the Guardian Arkveld boss. The required materials for the armor set come from other creatures. The other cool thing about the Guardian Arkveld set is that the materials come from other creatures in the Ruins of Wyveria biome. These include the Guardian Rathalos, Guardian Doshaguma, and even the aforementioned Guardian Ebony Odogaron. As for the Guardian Seikret Feather, you can keep redoing the “Spread Those Wings” optional quest by talking to Alma at your camp, since the wild raptor-bird mobs drop the items that you need. That does it for our guide on the best armor in Monster Hunter Wilds. Don’t forget that these two options are just for the Low Rank segment of the game. Once you’ve unlocked High Rank and, later, Tempered Monsters, you can craft other equipment or choose the upgraded versions of these. Need more tips as you continue fighting deadly creatures and venture into lands unknown? We’ve got you covered in our Monster Hunter Wilds guides hub. 17. Donald Trump accuses Zelensky of ‘gambling with World War Three’ Donald Trump accuses Zelensky of ‘gambling with World War Three’ A furious Donald Trump has clashed with Volodymyr Zelensky, with the US president telling his Ukrainian counterpart to make a deal with Russia “or we are out”. The pair interrupted each other repeatedly during heated exchange in a manner rarely seen in the White House. At one point, an angry looking Trump said Zelensky was not thankful enough for US military and political support, and that he was “gambling with World War Three”. Zelensky said there should be “no compromises” with Russian President Vladimir Putin – but Trump said Kyiv would have to make concessions to reach a peace deal with Russia. The meeting was intended as a prelude to the two signing a minerals deal, which did not go ahead. In what seemed like a public dressing-down of the Ukrainian president by Trump and US Vice-President JD Vance, the conversation began with Vance telling Zelensky that the war had to be ended through diplomacy. Zelensky asked “what kind of diplomacy?” before being accused by the vice-president of being disrespectful. The discussion then escalated quickly, as Trump and Vance accused Ukraine’s president of being ungrateful for three years’ of US support during the war with Russia, with Trump saying he was in no position to tell the US how it should feel. Not long after the meeting and well ahead of the pre-planned schedule, Zelensky was seen leaving the White House in his official vehicle. Meanwhile, Trump took to Truth Social, the social media platform he owns, to say “Zelensky disrespected the US in its cherished Oval Office”. “We had a very meaningful meeting in the White House today,” he wrote. “Much was learned that could never be understood without conversation under such fire and pressure. “It’s amazing what comes out through emotion, and I have determined that President Zelensky is not ready for Peace if America is involved, because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations. I don’t want advantage, I want PEACE.” He added that Zelensky “can come back when he is ready for peace”. The two leaders were expected to sign a deal giving Washington access to Ukrainian oil, gas and rare minerals, which was later confirmed not to have occurred. 19. Champions Trophy 2025: Five issues facing England after Jos Buttler’s resignation Champions Trophy 2025: Five issues facing England after Jos Buttler’s resignation This one is English cricket’s long-standing problem. When England focus on the Test side, the white-ball team struggles. When they give priority to those in a coloured kit, the red-ball side lurches towards review-inducing crisis. That Buttler has rarely had his best players available is the caveat that should go down alongside a tournament record that reads one title and three sorry exits. McCullum’s first act as white-ball leader has been to bring the two sides closer together. Smith, Ben Duckett, Brydon Carse and Gus Atkinson are all Test players given limited-overs opportunities. The results cannot be deemed a success. England will play only 10 Tests this year, having played 17 in 2024, and McCullum does not sound ready for change. “Most other teams manage that, if you look at India’s players and how they play cross-formats, look at Australia’s fast bowling line-up, New Zealand are similar,” he said. “I’m hopeful that with some shrewd planning and a better understanding of what our player pool looks like, we’ll be able to make sure we can get it across all formats, because that’s ultimately what people that follow this team deserves.” Source link #Champions #Trophy #issues #facing #England #Jos #Buttlers #resignation Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

James Cameron leaving Trump’s U.S., calls it ‘horrifying’ – National James Cameron leaving Trump’s U.S., calls it ‘horrifying’ – National Academy Award-winning film director James Cameron says his New Zealand citizenship is “imminent” and is hinting at plans to relocate to the country permanently to escape Donald Trump’s second term in the White House. Cameron, a ********* born in Kapuskasing, Ont., and well-known for his slate of blockbuster movies including Titanic and Avatar, told New Zealand news outlet Stuff that he intends to make his farm in South Wairarapa his family’s primary residence. The film director, already a resident of New Zealand, has owned the 1,000-hectare dairy farm since 2012. He also has a history of professional ties to the island nation, having collaborated with Wellington-based visual effects studio Weta Visual on Avatar, for which it was awarded an Oscar. According to the Guardian, Cameron has long been vocal about his plans to live in New Zealand and Trump’s current presidency, which he described as “horrifying” and “like watching a car ****** over and over again,” acted as a recent catalyst. 23. Microsoft is hanging up on Skype, and we should salute it for introducing us all to video calls Microsoft is hanging up on Skype, and we should salute it for introducing us all to video calls If I close my eyes, I can hear the once iconic Skype ringtone: “Da DA-da, do-do DO do.” It was the sound of communication and possibility. Who knows what would happen during that video call, what I would learn, what I would say? Now, as we prepare for Skype to wind down in May of this year, I want to reflect on what it’s meant to you and me. Where would we be without Skype? I know most of you no longer use the OG video calling platform, but there was a time when Skype was so popular it became a verb: ‘I’ll Skype you, okay?'” Almost 25 years ago, Skype was part of the peer-to-peer (P2P) decentralized revolution. Like the music-sharing platform Napster, Skype lets you connect directly between two systems over the internet to conduct video calls, and, like Napster, it was a bit of a sensation. By 2005, unlikely suitor eBay bought it and then sold a majority stake to an investment group. Two years later, Microsoft paid $8.5 billion to acquire the by-then wildly popular video communication platform. I’d say it was attractive because Skype was being used by consumers and businesses, including broadcast outlets that liked to conduct Skype-based on-air interviews. A sound like no other Skype – Skype Ringtone [HQ SOUND] – YouTube Watch On By that time, I’d been using Skype for years and worried that Microsoft might ruin the service (I guess, ultimately, I was right). I’d dallied with using it to call friends and family. After all, FaceTime didn’t arrive until 2009, and at the time, most people didn’t own an iPhone, but they did have Windows PCs. Dressed 50% for Skype TV pic.twitter.com/3EtlcItcM3October 29, 2020 Most of my Skype calls were with broadcast studios who appreciated Skype’s remarkable network management, which usually ensured clear audio and video that nearly rivaled what they could get via satellite feeds. Naturally, they also liked it because it was cheaper than those satellite hookups and then sending out an entire film crew. Skype was where I learned to half-dress for television: If I wasn’t going to a studio and only needed to show 50% of me to the Skype camera on my PC, then it was business on top and party (or at least casual) on the bottom. I mastered this look years before I would repeat it for countless Google Meet, Cisco Webex, and even Microsoft Teams video conferences. Building on Skype Microsoft’s interest and devotion to Skype waxed and waned over the years, but for a time, Skype was a hub of development. It was an early home for Cortana, Microsoft’s first digital assistant, and was the first place where I saw real-time translation at work. That’s right. Skype was translating the spoken word in real time long before Google and Samsung brought the feature to phones. We’re getting a preview of “the next generation of Skype.” Note the Cortana integration. #Build2016 pic.twitter.com/HpNfKVmvObMarch 30, 2016 If we hadn’t trained on Skype, would we have been truly prepared for remote work and all those video meetings? I know so many video conferencing platforms showed up in the years before the pandemic when we were all shuttered at home, but which one showed us the way? I’d argue it was Skype. Eventually, broadcasters and most of my Skype buddies moved away from Skype. Media companies started using Zoom and the aforementioned Cisco. Businesses adopted Google Meet, Zoom, and Microsoft’s newer and more preferred platform, Teams, which is better integrated with the Microsoft 365 suite. Gen Z might point to Zoom as the platform that made video conferencing cool, but aside from being free, widely available, and supporting large group video conferences, it didn’t do anything that Skype hadn’t done first. But digital memory is short, and I’m sure they’ll tell their grandkids, who’ll use brain chips to send video streams to friends and social media, that when they were kids, they used to “Zoom.” Gen Z might point to Zoom as the platform that made video conferencing cool, but aside from being free, widely available, and supporting large group video conferences, it didn’t do anything that Skype hadn’t done first. In announcing the change, Microsoft included this in a blog post, “Skype has been an integral part of shaping modern communications and supporting countless meaningful moments, and we are honored to have been part of the journey. ” It’s true: Skype, the unruly and sometimes unloved communication platform, made it possible and okay to communicate with anyone via video on a PC. It was the realization of a dream that stretched back to 1927’s Metropolis and the 1960s cartoon of the future The Jetsons. I’ll miss Skype, its dial-in sound, and even the name. Maybe Microsoft will find another use for it, though I struggle to imagine what that might be. 24. An Iranian Stew to Celebrate Ramadan An Iranian Stew to Celebrate Ramadan Good morning. It’s the new moon today and with it the start of Ramadan, one of Islam’s holiest months. We have loads of recipes for suhoor, iftar and, for planning purposes, the Eid al-Fitr holiday that will come at the end of March. To all those observing: Ramadan Mubarak. Naz Deravian has a new recipe for an iftar meal: khoresh gheymeh (above), an Iranian stew of lamb and split peas topped with crispy onions. “Khoresh” is a Persian word for stews or braises; “gheymeh” refers to the size of the pieces of meat — small, almost minced. Spiced with turmeric, cinnamon and saffron, sweet with onion, rich with tomato paste and finished with either dried lime or a healthy pour of lime juice, it’s a dish I commend even to those who aren’t really sure what iftar is (it’s the meal eaten after a day of fasting). Serve over rice with a Shirazi salad. Featured Recipe Khoresh Gheymeh (Meat and Split Pea Stew) View Recipe → I don’t observe Ramadan, so Saturday’s going to be similar to most Saturdays I’ve ridden through of late: a breakfast of a single, precious half-boiled egg doused in soy sauce, with a toasted English muffin slathered in cold butter and marmalade, followed by a long drive through distant neighborhoods looking for a perfect Italian sub. (I invariably end up at Defonte’s in Brooklyn for a Nicky Special or a Princess, depending on mood.) For dinner? Spicy sesame noodles with chicken and peanuts, into which I generally stir some baby spinach for a flash of green. That’s an excellent meal. Sundays are for waffles, for pancakes, for starting the day with a little feast that can extend toward noon with mugs of strong, milky ****** tea and a graze through the print edition of The New York Times. I’ll take a nap for lunch and then get going in the afternoon with preparations for a proper Sunday supper with family: a simple salt-and-pepper roast chicken, with Madeira gravy, fluffy mashed potatoes and a bowl of frozen peas cooked through with sweet butter and just a little mint. Unless, that is, family bags out on me — there’s a bowling tournament no one reminded the old man about; a date with friends, same. If that’s the case, I’ll upshift into experimentation mode and keep playing with this recipe for steamed tofu with a garlicky ******-bean sauce that I’ve been hacking out of Calvin Eng’s new cookbook, “Salt Sugar MSG.” It’s pretty cool. You steam slabs of silken tofu (silken tofu’s delicate, and my slabs generally turn out as chunks) and then serve them over rice, doused in a gravy of garlic and ******-bean sauce mixed with a handful of seared ground beef or pork. Eng makes his own ******-bean sauce from scratch, but I’ve done well with store-bought Lee **** Kee mixed with a little hoisin sauce, maple syrup and chicken stock. Make your rice, get the ground pork sizzling as soon as the tofu goes into the steam bath, add the sauce and stir to combine. You’ll have dinner on the table 10 minutes later. Don’t forget to scatter some sliced scallions over the top. There are thousands more recipes to cook this weekend waiting for you on New York Times Cooking. Go see what you find. You need a subscription to do that, of course. Subscriptions are what make this whole endeavor possible. If you haven’t already, would you consider subscribing today? Thanks. If you run into issues with your account, please write for help: *****@*****.tld. Someone will get back to you. Or you can write to me if you want to get something off your chest or simply to say hi: *****@*****.tld. I can’t respond to every letter. But I read each one I get. Now, it’s a considerable distance from anything to do with cakes or ale, but my old boss Dean Baquet put me onto Dan Chaon’s fourth novel, “Sleepwalk,” published in 2022. It’s lawless, funny, really, really dark. Source link #Iranian #Stew #Celebrate #Ramadan Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
