Force, Brumbies draw in post-siren Super W thriller
Force, Brumbies draw in post-siren Super W thriller
Brumbies flyhalf Faitala Moleka has missed an after-the-siren penalty in her side’s 29-29 Super W draw with the Western Force in Perth.
In a thrilling finish to Saturday’s match, Force substitute Sammy Treherne scored a 79th-minute try to reduce the margin to two points, before an ice cool Nicole Ledington nailed the sideline conversion to level the scores.
The Force gave away a penalty moments after the restart, giving Moleka the chance to win the game in the 81st minute with a 36m penalty on a 40-degree angle.
Mokela hooked the kick badly to the left, with the miss ensuring for a share of the spoils.
The Force started the match as hot favourites after bolstering their squad during the off-season.
Wallaroos recruits Allana Sikimeti, Sera Naiqama, Ashley Marsters and Cecilia Smith were all named in the starting line-up, with Treherne adding impact from the bench.
The Brumbies scored four tries to two in an entertaining first half to take a 26-17 lead into the break.
Meranie Paraone scored the opening try after just three minutes, but the Force hit back with two quick tries of their own.
A tackle-busting run by Force winger Brooklyn Teki Joyce set up Anneka Stephens for the home side’s first.
And the Force led 14-7 in the 12th minute when outside centre Cecilia Smith got on the end of a series of slick passes.
A yellow card to Smith two minutes later changed the complexion of the match.
Brumbies winger Biola Dawa scored while the Force were down a player.
And when Brumbies flanker Chioma Enyi scored two tries in the space of three minutes approaching half-time, the visitors were in complete control.
The second half was a grind, and it wasn’t until the final few minutes that things started really opening up, with Moleka’s after-the-siren miss proving to be the critical moment.

Victory secure point with late equaliser against Roar
Victory secure point with late equaliser against Roar
Brisbane’s winless streak at home stretched to 10 matches as Melbourne Victory struck in the last minute of the match to claim a 1-1 draw at Suncorp Stadium.
A minute after Samuel Klein had spurned a chance in front of goal, left back Kasey Bos caught the Roar defence napping in the 97th minute.
Victory, fifth on the A-League Men ladder coming into the clash, had a golden opportunity against the cellar-dwellers to join Western United and Adelaide United on 32 points in equal second position with a win, but were outplayed by the hosts.
The Roar’s winless streak at their spiritual home stretches back to March 3 last year when they beat Victory 3-2.
Saturday’s draw was their first point at home since then after nine losses.
Winger Henry ***** scored his third ALM goal in five games with a strike of panache that appeared to have won the match for the hosts.
In the 20th minute ***** cut inside from the left with a couple of stepovers bamboozling Brendan Hamill before letting rip with his right to beat goalkeeper Mitchell Langerak at the near post.
Roar forwards Nathan Amanatidis and Asumah Abubakar created havoc in attack but could not find the net.
Amanatidis had three chances inside 15 minutes, the third expertly saved off the line by defender Joshua Rawlins.
Ghana-born forward Abubakar, most recently signed to Grasshoppers in the Swiss Super League, had the Roar faithful on their feet in his first game as a starter.
He ran himself ragged in a stellar first half before being replaced by Ben Halloran, who had a goal ruled out just after the break for being narrowly offside.
Amanatidis burst through the middle of the Victory defence in the 50th minute but again failed to finish, injuring a hamstring in the process and limping from the pitch.
Victory midfielder Jordi Valadon went close to his first ALM goal when he hit the post in the sixth minute, but the visitors could not get into any attacking groove.
The Roar made several changes to the side that lost 3-1 to Newcastle, with goalkeeper Matthew Acton coming in for regular goalie Macklin Freke. Acton did well to save a Ryan Teague thunderbolt on the cusp of halftime.
Bos was the hero at the end as Victory never gave up.
Roar stalwart Jack Hingert came off the bench for his 300th match for the club in all competitions.

Kurdish group PKK declares ceasefire with Turkey
Kurdish group PKK declares ceasefire with Turkey
Outlawed Kurdish group the PKK has declared a ceasefire with Turkey after its jailed leader Abdullah Ocalan called on the movement to lay down its arms and dissolve itself.
In a statement on Saturday, the PKK said it hoped Turkey would release Ocalan, who has been imprisoned in solitary confinement since 1999, so he can lead a process of disarmament.
It follows his call this week aimed at ending four decades of armed struggle in south-eastern Turkey in which tens of thousands of people have been killed.
His announcement came months after Devlet Bahceli, the leader of Turkey’s ultra-nationalist MHP party and an ally of the Turkish government, launched an initiative to bring an end to the conflict.
Ocalan – affectionately referred to as Apo by Kurdish nationalists – met MPs from a pro-Kurdish party this week on Imrali, an island in the Sea of Marmara, south-west of Istanbul, where he is imprisoned.
“In order to pave the way for the implementation of leader Apo’s call for peace and democratic society, we are declaring a ceasefire effective from today,” the PKK executive committee said in a statement on Saturday, quoted by the pro-PKK ANF news agency.
“None of our forces will take armed action unless attacked,” it added.
The PKK – which stands for the Kurdistan Workers’ Party – said Ocalan’s prison conditions must be eased, adding he “must be able to live and work in physical freedom and be able to establish unhindered relationships with anyone he wants, including his friends”.
The group has waged an insurgency since 1984, with the aim of carving out a homeland for Kurds, who account for about 20% of Turkey’s 85 million people. It is banned as a terrorist group in Turkey, the EU, *** and US.
Calling for disarmament, Ocalan had appealed to members of the PKK in a letter read out by Dem party members Ahmet Turk and Pervin Buldan in both Kurdish and Turkish.
He said “all groups must lay their arms and the PKK must dissolve itself”, adding that his movement was formed primarily because “the channels of democratic politics were closed”.
However, Bahceli, backed by positive signals from Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other political parties, had created the right environment for the PKK to lay down its arms, Ocalan added.
Kurdish leaders largely welcomed the development. Local reports said thousands of people gathered to watch the statement on big screens in the cities of Diyarbakir and Van in the predominantly Kurdish south-east.
However, significant questions remain among both the Kurdish and Turkish public over what the next steps might be – and not everyone was convinced things would change.
Last week, senior PKK commander Duran Kalkan said Turkey’s ruling party, the AKP, was not looking for a solution but to “take over, destroy and annihilate”.
Turkish-backed forces in north-eastern Syria have intensified their campaign against Kurdish forces and last month called on Syria’s new leaders to eliminate the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces.
Pro-Kurdish politicians have been targeted by a wave of arrests and jail sentences in recent years.
Some 40,000 people have died since the PKK’s insurgency began.
There was a spike in violence in south-eastern Turkey from 2015 to 2017 when a two-and-a-half year ceasefire broke down.
More recently, in October the PKK claimed an attack on the Turkish Aerospace Industries (****) headquarters near Ankara which left five people dead.

Mitsubishi ******* Sport GLS review
Mitsubishi ******* Sport GLS review
Here we are in a segment where the Ford Everest is in pole position, dominating large SUV sales (under $80,000) in 2024 across mainstream and luxury brands — and outperforming my Mitsubishi ******* Sport three-to-one.
It’s stiff competition, whatever way you look at it.
The Ford Everest ended the year on a 21.2 per cent market share, ahead of the Isuzu MU-X in second place on 14.4 per cent, the Subaru Outback in third place on 8.2 per cent and the Toyota Prado and Toyota Kluger, each on 7.9 per cent — a whisker ahead of the Kia Sorento on 7.8 per cent.
The Mitsubishi ******* Sport finished on 5.9 per cent.
Without a doubt, there’s plenty of choice here, so where do you even start?
Do you want diesel, petrol, hybrid or electric?
Do you really need a 4WD?
Do you need seven seats?
Everyone’s needs are different.
Camera IconMitsubishi ******* Sport. Credit: Mitsubishi Australia/Mitchell Oke
But really, there’s not much point driving a two-tonne 4WD around the CBD unless you’re putting all that grunt to good use for other trips.
So, what does the ******* Sport offer?
Well, it’s the successor to the ******* 4WD launched in 1982 and manufactured across four generations until production came to an end in 2021.
Any way you look at it, the ******* was legendary, competing in the Dakar Rally 26 times between 1983 and 2009 with a series of stellar wins.
Oh, it was marketed as the Montero in some markets, including Spain, North America and parts of Latin America, and the Shogun in the United Kingdom.
Call it what you will, I’ve got the GLS here, which is $56,890 RRP, excluding on-road costs.
Mitsubishi Australia says this has been the most popular model in the 12 months to January 2025, with 2102 sales making up 30 per cent of ******* uptake.
The GSR, with 1761 sales, has been second most popular with 1761 sales (25 per cent of model share), followed by the Exceed (1624 sales/23 per cent) and GLX (1485 sales/21 per cent) over the same *******.
******* Sport RRP pricing
There are four variants:
+ GLX 5-seat: $51,540
+ GLS 7-seat: $56,890 (Deluxe option + $2350)
+ Exceed 7-seat: $62,590
+ GSR 7-seat: $64,840
Note: RRP pricing excludes on-road costs.
The lowdown
+ The ******* Sport has a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Quoted outputs are 133kW of power and 430Nm off torque.
+ Part-time 4WD with selectable transfer case. GLS, Exceed and GSR models also have a rear diff lock.
+ Braked towing capacity is 3100kg.
+ Cargo capacity (7-seat): 502 litres to top of second row; 131L to top of third row; 1488L with all seats folded.
+ Fuel tank capacity: 68L
+ Fuel consumption: 8L/100km
+ 18-inch alloys with 265/60 tyres and a full-size spare alloy wheel.
+ Ground clearance is 218mm and fording/wading depth is 700mm.
Safety and driver assistance
The ******* Sport does not have a current ANCAP safety rating. Old models with build dates from October 2015-December 2022 had a five-star rating, which has expired, and cannot be used as a comparison because safety testing protocols have changed.
Additionally, mandatory new autonomous emergency braking regulations come into effect in Australia from March 1, 2025, and August 1, 2026.
All ******* Sports have, as standard, among other things:
+ Seven airbags
+ Forward-collision mitigation system (part of the AEB)
+ Rear-view camera with parking sensors
+ Hill-descent control
+ Active stability control
+ Trailer stability assist
+ Active traction control
+ Anti-lock braking system
+ Electronic brakeforce distribution
+ Brake override system
Mitsubishi Australia has confirmed that curtain airbags cover second and third rows.
But, the rub here is the lack of otherwise basic features in my GLS, notably there is no blind-spot warning, no lane-change assist, no rear-cross-traffic alert, no front parking sensors, no 360-view camera.
Can you handle this given how advanced car tech is these days?
Look at specs carefully — there is a GLS Deluxe option which does come with, among other things, the 360-degree camera that’s otherwise included on the Exceed and GSR.
By the way, all variants do get automatic rain-sensing wipers.
The look
Sure, it’s large — with a length of 4840mm and width of 1815mm on a 2800mm wheelbase.
If you’re 159.5cm like me, you’ll appreciate the side step and side pillar grips getting in.
Camera IconThe side step makes it easy to get in. Credit: Mitsubishi Australia/Mitchell Oke
The driver’s seat in the GLS has manual adjustments with lumbar support, so it’s easy to get comfortable, but I find the interior a bit dated.
Camera IconThe six-speaker audio system is surprisingly good. Credit: Olga de Moeller
For a start, the 8.0-inch touchscreen feels too small given 12 inches is more the standard today — and camera resolution could be better, especially at night.
I do, however, like the leather-wrapped steering wheel, which feels nice to hold.
Sure, it’s spacious enough, with cloth upholstery, a centre console with storage box and lid, two generous cupholders, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth with voice control and satellite navigation.
The big surprise is the the audio system. You get six speakers in the GLS and, wow, they pack a punch. Dive into sound control settings and you can choose from several music genres and make all sorts of adjustments to suit your taste.
Getting into the third row is easy enough — second row seats flip forward, so there’s plenty of space in the footwell but, really, sitting back here is more for kids.
The drive
You can’t miss the diesel engine hum. I don’t mind it, neither do my passengers, but wind noise is significant at 80-100km/h over the side mirrors
Acceleration is good; no complaints getting up to speed — and you can switch from 2WD to full-time 4WD at up to 100kmh on any surface.
Camera IconSecond-row seats flip forward, so it’s easy to get into the third row. Credit: Olga de Moeller
Surprisingly, despite the lack of cameras and sensors, the ******* is easy to park, but the tailgate is a monster to pull down.
Getting it open is no problem; it’s powered, but it’s heavy to close, so take note, especially if you’re juggling shopping at the same time or nursing a dodgy shoulder.
Really, this is car you’d buy if you were doing frequent long trips, hauling a caravan, and wanted the option of going off the beaten track.
Warranty and servicing
The MY24 ******* Sport comes has a 10-year/200,000km new car warranty when scheduled services are completed at a Mitsubishi dealership.
Servicing is every 12 months/15,000km (whichever comes first), costing, respectively, $449, $549, $499, $849, $549, $949, $749, $999, $899 and $999 at 10 years/150,000km.

EEEEKK! Unexpected guests dampen dream getaway
EEEEKK! Unexpected guests dampen dream getaway
A sweeping veranda to sip local rosé on. Architectural interiors with plenty of personal and thoughtful touches. A spa bath perfectly positioned to take in sweeping bush views. An ideal location by the coast. A fluffy bed to rival any hotel offering.
The home we called ours for two nights during a recent getaway down south was one of the best properties I’ve stayed at.
And yet, I’ll be giving it a much lower score.
“Why?”, you ask. Well, it has four little legs, two oversized ears, and a long tail.
As I was tucked up on the couch reading Nicola Moriarty’s latest page-turner, my bliss was shattered by a gasp and a bang. Upon opening the kitchen cupboard that concealed the bin and cleaning products, my partner found four beady eyes staring up at him with the look of a toddler caught drawing on the wall in texta.
Immediately whacking the door shut, he paced before we brainstormed an action plan.
Open it again and usher them to freedom? That was a big “no” from me. Contact the host and let them know, so as not to give the cleaner a fright? That sounded better.
Now I’m no stranger to having mice as housemates. When I lived in a granny flat near Meelup Beach, they took up residence despite paying no rent. My partner also lived in a mouse-infested apartment in Melbourne, once waking up with one exploring his face.
But this place was not cheap. When you’re paying a premium price for a holiday home, there is an expectation the space will be clean, comfortable, safe — and rodent-free. Or maybe that’s just me?
And so we requested a partial refund (or to have the cleaning fee knocked off), also pointing out a persistent ant problem in the kitchen and a 2am wake-up call from some unreasonably loud sprinklers — things we could have overlooked if not for the surprise arrival of our furry friends.
Quick sidenote: I’m one of those weirdos who finds cleaning cathartic, so the kitchen and home were spotless, and all the doors were closed to keep the blowies out. These mice had already settled in or had Shawshanked their way in through a tunnel outside.
Our request was knocked back. The host was perfectly pleasant in their responses as they said the rural setting meant unexpected wildlife activity could sometimes occur despite their best efforts.
They recommended taking it up with the platform where we made the booking.
The internet is full of people taking to social media or forums to voice their gripes about the less-than-favourable accommodation they stayed in and the people who wronged them.
It’s an algorithm I happily ride the wave of sometimes — a guilty indulgence.
Stories range from spying someone living in a locked room inside the home a guest has booked to arriving at a stay and realising the apartment never existed and they’ve been scammed. The videos rack up hundreds of comments and thousands of likes. Whinging has never been so lucrative.
Despite feeling wronged, you won’t see my mug on social media spilling my heart anytime soon.
The first thing I do, though, when booking a stay at a hotel or on Airbnb is read the reviews. And look, do I pore over the worst ones first? Of course — I’m only human.
While I realise a review is just one person’s experience, a bad assessment is immediately off-putting. Personally, I’d rule out a home whose reviews mention mice, no matter how gorgeous it looks or how much others have gushed over it.
The fine line between honesty and take-down is one I’ve had to navigate for the past four years writing food reviews. Despite finding joy in reading bad reviews, it is not sparked when writing them.
The restaurants I’ve dined at that have been terrible, I’ve let them know offline, rather than sharing my experience with a larger audience.
Because my views are just that — my views. The restaurant might have been having an off night, the chef might have called in sick, a waiter might be in crisis. What I would rate low, someone else might give full marks.
This was all running through my mind when I penned the review for the down south stay, my people-pleasing tendencies attempting to win over my inner Karen who was not happy with the manager.
I ummed and ahhed for so long that I looked up the Cambridge dictionary’s meaning of review: to think or talk about something again, in order to make changes to it or to make a decision about it. Procrastination at its best.
By definition, my review needed to talk about the stay — the good, and the squeaky — in the hope changes might be made to keep the mice out and the good vibes in for future visitors.
And so the final masterpiece was a compliment sandwich, a summary filled with tasty bites of niceties until you crunch into lettuce with sand in it and it’s no longer enjoyable.
