Michelle Trachtenberg’s Cause of Death Ruled as ‘Undetermined’ The Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum’s cause and manner of death were both officially listed as “undetermined,” the New York Medical Examiner’s office confirmed to In Touch on February 27, 2025. A source told the New York Post that the cause of death was listed this way after her family reportedly objected to an autopsy. The medical examiner’s office was “obligated to honor the family’s request due to the state’s public health law,” according to the insider. Only an external examination of the body could be completed. Insiders initially told ABC News on the day of Michelle’s passing that an autopsy would be completed to determine her cause and manner of death. A van from the NYC medical examiner’s office was photographed outside the Ice Princess star’s Manhattan apartment building on February 26, 2025. However, the original caption was shared by People. “Seeing your face from the hospital bed when we FaceTimed recently, even though you did not look like you, your ********** and humor were still alive,” the caption read. “I will not share the details of our conversations over the last six months. 7. Armand Duplantis: Olympic champion break’s men’s pole vault world record for 11th time Armand Duplantis: Olympic champion break’s men’s pole vault world record for 11th time Britain’s Molly Caudery claimed the overall World Indoor Tour Gold title with victory at the final meeting of the series in Madrid. Reigning world indoor pole vault champion Caudery, 24, cleared a season’s best 4.85m as she took maximum points and beat Slovenia’s Tina Sutej to the title. Sutej, who had led the standings going into the final, was the only other athlete to clear 4.70m but she had no response to Caudery’s first-time vault over 4.75m. It meant England’s Caudery, who added to her win in Karlsruhe and second place in Lievin, accumulated 27 points with her best three series performances – three points ahead of Sutej. She will be one of Britain’s medal hopes at next week’s European Indoor Athletics Championships, one year after winning her first major title at the World Indoors in Glasgow. The European Indoor Championships take place in Apeldoorn, in the Netherlands, from 6-9 March. Also competing will be fellow Briton Bianca Williams, who ran a personal best time of 7.16 seconds in the women’s 60m to place second on the night in Madrid. That performance came one week after Williams lowered her best to 7.19 secs when winning the British indoor title for the first time. 11. F1 2025 pre-season testing: McLaren impressive and Lewis Hamilton positive F1 2025 pre-season testing: McLaren impressive and Lewis Hamilton positive The sense that McLaren were a step ahead of their rivals at Bahrain’s Sakhir track was founded on some eye-catching pace on race-simulation runs. These are always the most reliable indicators of true competitiveness in testing because a key variable is removed. Teams do a full grand prix distance so the level of fuel is known, even if other settings, such as engine modes, may still not be comparable from car to car. On the afternoon of the second day of testing, McLaren’s Lando Norris did a race-simulation run at the same time as Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Mercedes’ Andrea Kimi Antonelli. The Briton’s pace was breathtaking. He would have won the ‘race’ by more than 30 seconds, and was on average more than 0.5secs a lap quicker than his rivals. Leclerc would have finished about two seconds ahead of Antonelli. On the final afternoon, Norris’ team-mate Oscar Piastri and Mercedes’ George Russell were out at the same time doing the same thing. Again, the McLaren was faster, although not by as much. Piastri was an average of 0.2secs a lap quicker than Russell. That would mean winning by just over 10 seconds. However, Piastri’s advantage was nearly all gained in the first stint, in which he was 0.5secs quicker than Russell. In the second and third stints, the McLaren’s advantage was just 0.05secs. It’s pointless comparing the times of Norris, Leclerc and Antonelli with those of Piastri, Russell from one day to the next, because Thursday was cooler and less windy than Friday. F1 cars are faster in cooler conditions because the higher air density increases both downforce and engine performance, and wind is bad news for the cars’ sensitive aerodynamics. Over one lap, the McLaren’s pace was less outstanding – but then it’s harder to tell that in testing. For what it’s worth, McLaren seem pretty level-pegging over a single lap with Ferrari, a Verstappen-driven Red Bull and Mercedes. McLaren were keen to play down any claims that they were ahead. Team principal Andrea Stella said he “would be very careful” about drawing conclusions from Norris’ run, suggesting the usually cool conditions in Bahrain “were in a sweet spot for our car – they were conditions our car enjoys, cool, not much wind”. Stella’s point is that the conditions perhaps masked some of the weaknesses McLaren have had in Bahrain in recent years – the track’s combination of mainly slow corners and traction-dominated layout do not play to the car’s strengths, especially in the heat that is normally typical in the desert. But there is another way of looking at that. If McLaren can be this quick on a circuit that does not suit their car, just how good could they be at Melbourne, which on paper is much more their kind of track? The McLaren excels in the sort of medium-speed corners and low-grip surface that are typical at Albert Park, where front-end performance is the main limitation for an F1 car, not rear as in Bahrain. Norris, sitting in a news conference with Verstappen and Leclerc, said: “If we want to improve anything at the moment, it’s the rear, but the rest of it feels correct and feels in the same ball park. “I don’t think we are expecting to be a big step ahead of everyone. We are expecting to be close to the guys to my right. If we are there from the off, that’s the main thing.” Source link #preseason #testing #McLaren #impressive #Lewis #Hamilton #positive Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  12. Adelaide, Auckland fight out drama-filled 4-4 ALM draw Adelaide, Auckland fight out drama-filled 4-4 ALM draw Adelaide United have come from behind three times to fight out an extraordinary 4-4 draw with A-League Men leaders Auckland FC and keep the race for top spot alive. After Adelaide fought back from 2-0 then 3-1 down to level the game at 3-3 through two Zach Clough penalties, Auckland captain Hiroki Sakai thought he’d scored the winner in the 92nd minute, before Bart Vriends bundled home a 98th-minute equaliser. Auckland (40 points) are eight points clear of second-placed Western United and third-placed Adelaide, but will feel they have thrown away a chance to all but clinch the premiers plate with eight games to go. Steve Corica’s charges took the lead when Jake Brimmer found Guillermo May in midfield. The Uruguayan maestro cut inside, worked the ball to his left and ripped a wonderful, unstoppable strike past Ethan Cox. Four minutes later Frances De Vries launched a long throw-in, and with Jay Barnett and Vriends both focused on defending striker Max Mata, May was able to ghost in behind them to bundle home. Adelaide argued Mata had pushed Barnett in the back, but it wasn’t enough to overturn the goal. Adelaide hit back in the 32nd minute when Clough delivered a wonderful corner to the near post for Archie Goodwin, whose flick-header wrong-footed Alex Paulsen but didn’t quite cross the line. Elsey steamed in at the back post to slam the ball home. Auckland extended their lead in the 53rd minute when De Vries curled an excellent corner into a tantalising position for Logan Rogerson to head home amid a collective of bodies. Adelaide received a penalty on the hour mark after a VAR review determined Louis Verstraete kicked Ethan Alagich in the leg when he tried to challenge for the ball. Paulsen got a hand to Clough’s spot-kick, but it wasn’t enough to keep the ball out. Adelaide received a second penalty when Tommy Smith legged Stefan Mauk as the midfielder burst through the 18-yard box. While Auckland felt the penalty was a soft one, Clough again made no mistake to equalise in the 79th minute, with Corica booked in the aftermath. In injury time, Cox spilled a close-range effort from Sakai and the Japanese star coolly drilled his second attempt past the goalkeeper. But Vriends bundled home a chaotic effort at the death to snatch a point. Source link #Adelaide #Auckland #fight #dramafilled #ALM #draw Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  13. Former bookkeeper sentenced in theft of $135K from metro-east school district Former bookkeeper sentenced in theft of $135K from metro-east school district A former bookkeeper for Dupo School District 196 has been sentenced to 15 months’ incarceration for embezzling from the district. Linda J. Johnson, 58, of Waterloo, was employed by the district from 1993 to 2022. She was accused of pocketing $135,566.80 in cash that she was supposed to deposit in a school district bank account to support student athletics, clubs and other extracurricular activities. A federal court filing from the U.S. Attorney’s Office states that Johnson made two sets of deposit slips: one kept at the school district with the correct amount of cash and checks received for the extracurriculars, and another, phony set of deposit slips that only listed checks, which she gave the bank while she kept the cash. A comparison of the deposit slips at the school district and those delivered to the bank revealed 165 fraudulent transactions, according to the court document. It states that Johnson admitted taking cash for personal expenses when her supervisor confronted her. Johnson pleaded guilty in October to one count of theft from a federally funded program. Judge Stephen P. McGlynn of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois handed down the sentence on Thursday. Of the 15 months’ incarceration, Johnson will be required to serve three months in prison and 12 additional months in community confinement. She will also be required to pay restitution to Dupo School District 196 and the Ohio Casualty Insurance Company. Johnson’s attorneys did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday. 16. US Embassy in Thailand warns Americans of ‘violent retaliatory attacks’ risk after Uyghurs deported to China US Embassy in Thailand warns Americans of ‘violent retaliatory attacks’ risk after Uyghurs deported to China The U.S. Embassy in Bangkok is warning Americans of potential “violent retaliatory attacks” Friday after a group of 45 Uyghurs were deported by Thailand to China in a move Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned in the “strongest possible terms.” Thai police and security officials said China had given assurances that the men — who had been in custody for more than a decade — wouldn’t face penalties or be harmed. They said at a news conference Thursday that all of them voluntarily returned after being shown a translation of a written ******** agreement requesting their repatriation and declaring they would be allowed to live normally. “Similar deportations have prompted violent retaliatory attacks in the past,” the U.S. Embassy warned though on Friday. “Most notably, in the wake of a 2015 deportation of Uyghurs from Thailand, improvised explosive devices detonated at the Erawan Shrine in Bangkok killing 20 people and injuring 125 others as this shrine is heavily visited by tourists from China.” The Embassy is now encouraging Americans in Thailand to “exercise increased caution and vigilance, especially in crowded locations frequented by tourists due to the potential for increased collateral risk.” Female American Tourist, 37, Goes Missing During Jet Ski Ride In Thailand: Report Rubio slammed the deportations Thursday, describing it as a “forced return of at least 40 Uyghurs to China, where they lack due process rights and where Uyghurs have faced persecution, forced labor, and torture.” Read On The Fox News App “As Thailand’s longstanding ally, we are alarmed by this action, which risks running afoul of its international obligations under the U.N. Convention Against Torture and the International Convention on the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance,” Rubio continued. “This act runs counter to the Thai people’s longstanding tradition of protection for the most vulnerable and is inconsistent with Thailand’s commitment to protect human rights.” “We urge all governments in countries where Uyghurs seek protection not to forcibly return ethnic Uyghurs to China,” he added. “We call on ******** authorities to provide full access to verify the well-being of the returned Uyghurs on a regular basis,” Rubio also said. “The Thai Government must insist and fully verify continuously that ******** authorities protect the Uyghurs’ human rights.” Top House Republican Threatens To Expose Ccp Officials If China Invades Taiwan Thai soldiers inspect the scene after a bomb exploded outside a religious shrine in central Bangkok on August 17, 2015. Thai lawmakers, activists and lawyers had raised the alarm Wednesday that the men were about to be deported, and after midnight, trucks with ****** sheets covering their windows left Bangkok’s Immigration Detention Center, where they had been held, according to the Associated Press. The news agency reported that it appeared the truck drove them to Bangkok’s Don Mueang airport, where a China Southern Airlines plane was waiting, and then flew to the heartland of China’s Uyghur population in northwestern Xinjiang province. In a statement on Facebook, the ******** Embassy acknowledged Thursday that 40 ******** nationals who it said entered Thailand illegally were deported to Xinjiang by a chartered flight. 19. Endless thorium supply in China can help make unlimited nuclear power: Survey Endless thorium supply in China can help make unlimited nuclear power: Survey A recently declassified report has revealed that China may have far more thorium than previously estimated. The radioactive metal, already known to exist in vast quantities within China’s borders, could be the key to a nearly unlimited energy supply. The findings suggest that thorium reserves in the country exceed previous estimates by orders of magnitude. The study, which concluded in 2020, highlights how thorium could revolutionize global energy production and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. A Beijing-based geologist, who wished to remain anonymous, explained the significance of the discovery, as reported by South China Morning Post (SCMP). “For over a century, nations have been engaging in wars over fossil fuels. It turns out the endless energy source lies right under our feet,” the geologist said. “Every nation has thorium. Imagine cargo ships powered by container-sized reactors crossing oceans for years without refueling.” Thorium’s potential to reshape energy policy Thorium is a silver-colored metal that can generate 200 times more energy than uranium. Unlike uranium-based reactors, thorium molten-salt reactors (TMSRs) are compact, do not require water cooling, cannot experience a meltdown, and produce very little long-lived radioactive waste. Last year, China approved the construction of the world’s first TMSR power plant in the Gobi Desert. This pilot project is expected to generate 10 megawatts of electricity and be operational by 2029. The report points to the enormous potential of thorium in China’s mining waste. Just five years’ worth of mining waste from an iron ore site in Inner Mongolia contains enough thorium to supply U.S. household energy demands for over 1,000 years. The Bayan Obo mining complex alone could yield around 1 million tonnes of thorium—potentially enough to power China for 60,000 years. “These thorium resources in tailings remain totally untouched,” wrote the study’s lead researcher, senior engineer Fan Honghai from the National Key Laboratory of Uranium Resource Exploration-Mining and Nuclear Remote Sensing in Beijing, reported SCMP. Challenges and future possibilities The national thorium survey identified 233 thorium-rich zones across China, clustered in five key belts from inland Xinjiang to coastal Guangdong. These deposits are primarily magmatic and hydrothermal, often found alongside rare earth elements. In regions such as Fujian and Hainan, monazite-rich coastal sands contain easily extractable thorium. Despite the excitement surrounding the discovery, significant challenges remain. Extracting thorium from rare earth ores requires large amounts of acid and energy, generating hundreds of tonnes of wastewater per gram of purified thorium. Some concerns also exist over the possibility of thorium by-products being weaponized, though experts argue that such materials would not be viable for nuclear bombs. China’s thorium research coincides with advancements in nuclear propulsion technology. The country recently unveiled the KUN-24AP, the world’s first thorium-powered nuclear container ship design. There are also plans to use thorium reactors for lunar bases, further demonstrating the metal’s importance in future energy solutions. “The demand for thorium in nuclear power and nuclear propulsion sectors has brought significant opportunities and challenges to the exploration and exploitation of thorium resources in China,” Fan and his team wrote in their report. The exact estimate of China’s total thorium reserves remains classified due to national security regulations, but the latest findings suggest the country could be sitting on a virtually limitless source of clean energy. The report was published in the ******** journal Geological Review. 22. Royal Caribbean makes unpopular change; Cruise lines reborn Royal Caribbean makes unpopular change; Cruise lines reborn Passengers get angry when a cruise line skips a port. They often demand compensation even though they’re not entitled to any under their cruise contracts. Cruise lines might even offer compensation if they make an unpopular change. Related: Carnival, Royal Caribbean crackdown leaves cruisers surprised Passengers always get full refunds of port fees or taxes when ports are skipped. One common reason ports get skipped is inclement weather. Sometimes, for example, docking at Royal Caribbean’s private island Perfect Day at CocoCay is too rough. That can disappoint passengers, but the cruise line has to act in the interest of safety. In other cases, a cruise port might get skipped because something is wrong at the port. Maybe it’s a small disruption and only one or two cruises will be missed or perhaps there’s a ******* issue. One popular cruise port has not been available for a few months. Royal Caribbean has had to cancel sailings to that port. Doug Parker of Cruise News Today has the full story along with news on two closed cruise lines making a comeback. Royal Caribbean cancels port stopsTranscript: This is Cruise News Today with Doug Parker. Good morning. Here’s your cruise news for Thursday, February 27. Royal Caribbean continues to adjust itineraries on more ships due to ongoing repairs at San Juan’s Pier 3, which has been out of service since last April. Now, Icon of the Seas will skip San Juan on select May, June, and July sailings, replacing the stop with Port of Ponce, Puerto Rico, or St. Martin. Meanwhile, Symphony of the Seas will reroute April itineraries to Porta Plata or Labadee. The pier, which was damaged by an MSC Cruise ship last year, is the only one in San Juan that can accommodate Royal Caribbean’s larger ships. Two closed cruise brands coming back; Allure hits dry dock And two major cruise brands that collapsed under the company Genting during the pandemic are making a comeback. Resorts World Cruises announced it’ll rebrand and resurrect Dream Cruises and Star Cruises over the next three months. Dream Cruises will continue sailing the Genting Dream from Singapore, while Star Cruises will launch two ships in Asia, the Star Navigator and Star Voyager. That’ll be starting next month. Both of the Genting-owned lines went out of business following the pandemic, a lesson that bankruptcy isn’t always the end. It’s just a brief stop before setting sail again. And Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas has entered dry dock in Cádiz, Spain, for a refurbishment under the Royal Amplified Program. Upgrades will include new suites, dining venues, an expanded pool deck, and family-friendly areas. The ship will also feature the Ultimate Abyss slide and the Perfect Storm waterslides, similar to those on other Oasis-Class ships. After the refit, Allure will spend the summer sailing the Mediterranean before repositioning to Port Everglades in November. If you have a lead on a story, let us know. *****@*****.tld. 24. Gold Coast Suns coach Damien Hardwick gives whacks AFL over pre-season schedule: ‘One job’ Gold Coast Suns coach Damien Hardwick gives whacks AFL over pre-season schedule: ‘One job’ Gold Coast Suns coach Damien Hardwick has sent the AFL a serious message after his team’s loss to Sydney on Friday night … and it was on behalf of the Swans. As fears suddenly emerge that Sydney superstar Errol Gulden could be out for months (not weeks), Hardwick says the structure of the pre-season needs greater thought. The AFL’s mini Opening Round starts next Thursday with only eight teams out of the league’s 18 featuring. The Swans are one of those teams, as are Gold Coast, but the Swans are playing their first game for premiership points on Friday against Hawthorn (the Suns take on Essendon on Saturday, while Hawthorn played their practice game on Thursday). The Swans are now in mad scramble to get back home but were “stuck” in Queensland overnight after the clash with Gold Coast. Hardwick said the AFL had “one job” … and they needed to get it right. “We have to get a bit better and it’s hard, because round zero comes in and then some sides have two weeks off,” Hardwick said. “We need to put our heads together and figure out what we can do, and get a little bit tighter. “Sydney can’t get home tonight and they play next Friday, they’re stuck here. “We just have to get this scheduling better. “They have one job, the AFL, let’s get it sorted out.” Other teams that feature in Opening Round are reigning premiers Brisbane (who played their practice game on Thursday in their home state, Geelong (who played on Tuesday at their home ground), and Collingwood (who are playing the Giants on Sunday after featuring in a practice match on Wednesday). It all makes for a tight turnaround for the Swans, who are also dealing with the concerning injury to Gulden – was sent to hospital for scans on an ankle injury. Gulden’s ankle was caught under him and twisted awkwardly when he was tackled early in the game. He was in agony and needed two trainers to help him from the ground. There was speculation the dual All-*********** suffered a syndesmosis injury, potentially sidelining him for several weeks. Those fears escalated on Saturday morning, with reports suggesting Gulden could now miss months. “Obviously when a player comes off like that, your concerns are heightened,” Swans assistant coach Mark McVeigh after the game. “It didn’t look good, but we have to wait on the scan results.” Hardwick’s concerns about the practice match schedule were no doubt sparked by the injuries to his own players as well. It was a night of injury carnage, with Suns players Mac Andrew (sternum), Charlie Ballard (ankle), David ******** (knee) and Lachie Weller (hamstring) also taken out of the game. Earlier on Friday, Western Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli (calf) and star Port Adelaide midfielder Zack Butters (knee surgery) were confirmed as being out of action for at least six weeks. The major injuries have fuelled the talk about whether the pre-season schedule has contributed to more injuries than usual. While Gulden is a big worry, Sydney will regain stars such as Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner and Dane Rampe for next week’s opener (who were wisely rested for the match against the Suns). Despite Gulden’s injury and the inability to get an overnight flight home, McVeigh said Sydney were pleased with how their pre-season had gone. “We feel like we’ve had a pretty good run-in,” he said. They fielded an undermanned side on Friday night, with Tom McCartin’s four goals the big highlight. McCartin has played previously as a key defender and McVeigh said he could go back to that role, depending on what the team needs. “That might swap week-to-week, we don’t know,” McVeigh said. “I don’t think we’re entirely settled on where he’ll play.” – With AAP Source link #Gold #Coast #Suns #coach #Damien #Hardwick #whacks #AFL #preseason #schedule #job Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  25. Here’s How Much Cash You Need at Home, According to Experts Here’s How Much Cash You Need at Home, According to Experts Willowpix / Getty Images/iStockphoto Digital payment platforms like Venmo, PayPal and Cash App have changed the way we deal with cash. Most people rarely keep cash on them, much less tucked away at home. A GOBankingRates survey last year found that the vast majority of American adults, 64%, keep $500 or less in cash at home. The survey found that 14% keep between $500 and $1,000, 11% keep between $1,000 and $2,000, 5% keep between $2,000 and $3,000, and just 6% keep more than $3,000 at home. Check Out: 3 Signs You’ve ‘Made It’ Financially, According to Financial Influencer Genesis Hinckley For You: 9 Things the Middle Class Should Consider Downsizing To Save on Monthly Expenses While you may not want to keep thousands of dollars in cash stashed in your home, there are unexpected events that can lead to a need for it. These include emergencies ranging from catastrophic weather — like hurricanes and wildfires — to widespread power outages. If you can’t access your digital currency or banking systems are down, having cash can allow you to get gas, food and medicine with ease. However, just how much cash should you have on hand? We asked experts to weigh in below. From a security point of view, cash is the most insecure asset you can have. Keeping the amount of cash you have in the house to a minimum in case of fire or theft is a good rule of thumb, said Ryan McCarty, CFP, lead advisor at Castle Rock Investment Company. McCarty framed it as a ratio by saying, “In terms of amount, don’t let your cash exceed 10% of your overall emergency fund and/or $10,000.” However, the “minimum” you should keep at home is up for debate among financial experts. Danielle Miura, CFP, owner of Spark Financials, suggested that “you should keep enough money on hand to get you a couple of gallons of gas, pay for a delivery tip or to help in unfortunate events.” To her, this means around $100 to $200. “Emergency funds should not be held at your home,” she added. “They should be stored in a high-yield savings account of your choice.” Consider This: 8 Must-Read Personal Finance Books of 2024 for a Fresh Start in 2025 Yasmin Purnell, founder of The Wallet Moth, suggested that you keep enough cash on hand in case of an emergency that would require you to access “temporary accommodation, food and drink, gasoline and medication.” She said, “As a general rule of thumb, having access to $1,000 in cash at home would ensure you can at least pay for immediate expenses in the case of a national emergency.” Jesse Cramer, associate relationship manager at Cobblestone Capital Advisors, believes less than $1,000 is ideal. Story Continues “It [varies from] person to person, but an amount less than $1,000 is almost always preferred,” he said. “There simply isn’t enough good reason to keep large amounts of liquid cash lying around the house. Banks are infinitely safer.” To drive home this point, he shared that his parents’ neighbors wound up financially burned due to a house fire that destroyed their hidden stockpiles of cash. “This is an extreme example, but the point stands,” Cramer said. “In today’s world of ubiquitous credit cards, Apple Pay, PayPal, Venmo, etc., there aren’t enough good reasons to keep large amounts of cash in the house.” Regardless of how much cash you keep at home, you need to keep it safe. Matthew Dailly, managing director at Tiger Financial, said, “You’ll need to locate safe havens for it. The loss of a large amount of cash can happen in a matter of seconds if your home is damaged by a flood or fire. Fireproof safe storage is a good idea.” McCarty added that for security purposes, money should be kept in a bolted-down safe along with any other valuables in the home. “Make sure the safe is fire and waterproof to avoid any damage. Make sure you deposit and replace the money on occasion so that the bills don’t get too old.” Jay Zigmont, founder of Childfree Wealth, offered another word of caution. “Having money on hand comes with the threat of theft or loss, but also, it may be a challenge for you to not spend it,” he said. “I’ve heard of people freezing the money — literally — or giving their spouse or child the key to the safe [so that they do not have easy access to spend the money]. Figure out a balance that works for you. Another good rule of thumb is to keep as little cash at home as you think is necessary. “Money in circulation loses value over time [due to inflation],” Dailly said. Therefore, having too much of it at home can cost you, whereas having it in savings or investments can make you more money in the long run.
