Brianna Throssell: Three-time WA Olympian calls time on brilliant career
Brianna Throssell: Three-time WA Olympian calls time on brilliant career
WA’s two-time Olympic gold medallist Brianna Throssell is satisfied she’s “given everything” to swimming after announcing her retirement.
Throssell revealed on Sunday that she was stepping away from the sport at age 29, ending an accomplished career that saw her feature at three Olympic Games.
It included a gold medal at last year’s Paris Games as part of the 4x200m freestyle team, complementing her gold from Tokyo for her role in the 4x100m medley relay.
Throssell added two bronze medals in Tokyo, having started her Olympic journey in Rio de Janeiro as a 20-year-old in 2016.

For over 12 years, I’ve been a part of the *********** Dolphins team, giving everything I had, leaving no stone unturned,” said Throssell, who was based in WA for the early part of her career before relocating to Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
“Swimming has been the biggest part of my life, and I’ve pushed myself to the absolute limit.
“I’ve competed in two Commonwealth Games, six long course World Championships, three Olympics, won four Olympic medals, and set a world record. Each of these achievements holds a special place in my heart. But the greatest reward has been the person I’ve become through it all.”

Throssell said she “knew it was time” to move on to the next stage of her life.
“I’ll forever cherish the memories, friendships, and experiences … it’s been an incredible journey but now I am ready for a new chapter,” she said.
“The lessons I’ve learned—about perseverance, teamwork, and the pursuit of excellence—will remain with me as I move forward but I am ready, and it was so so wonderful to finish the way I did.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better career finale. I still love the sport and really want to inspire the next generation because truly, swimming has taught me so much.”
*********** Dolphins coach Rohan Taylor said aside from the Olympic achievements, Throssell’s performance in snaring 200m freestyle bronze as an individual at last year’s World Championships stood out.
“Bri will probably say her gold in Paris was a highlight… but for me her individual medal in Doha was something special,” he said.
“It was a just reward for a true professional.”

Throssell said she was “incredibly grateful” for the lessons elite sport had taught her as she transitions to a new career.
“It was never about the medals, it’s about the people I’ve met, the strength I’ve found within myself, and the pride in knowing I gave everything I had,” she said.
“As I close this chapter, I am ready to take on my next steps with the same passion and commitment. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey.”

Who could forget the devastating Ice Storm of 1991 in Rochester, New York? Beginning on the afternoon of Sunday, March 3, the storm paralyzed the region.
Ice-covered tree limbs crashed down, blocking roads and bringing down live power lines, leaving more than 200,000 homes and businesses without power. It took 14 days to restore electricity to most RG&E customers.
What happened during the 1991 Rochester Ice Storm?
The storm hit late on Sunday, March 3, 1991.
More than 200,000 homes and businesses in western New York lost power, with RG&E customers experiencing a collective 25.5 million hours of electrical service loss.
It took 14 days to restore electricity for most RG&E customers.
Governor Mario M. Cuomo declared a state of emergency across 19 counties.
Tragically, a 73-year-old woman was found dead from exposure in her unheated Portland Avenue home on March 11—nine days after the storm hit.
Insurance companies paid $75 million in claims related to the storm.
The total cost of the storm reached $170 million—equivalent to over $300 million today.
On May 16, 1991, the Democrat and Chronicle reported on a 124-page internal RG&E report assessing how to improve storm response in the future.

‘Remember the effect on people’
‘Remember the effect on people’
Winters aren’t what they used to be in southwestern Ontario. Scientists say the season is shrinking on our overheating planet. It’s a trend that is also being seen in the United States.
What’s happening?
According to a new report, winters are warming up in Canada.
Climate Central, a nonprofit organization made up of scientists and journalists who analyze climate data and issue reports on their findings, released an analysis of 289 regions in Canada that explored how winter has changed over the past decade. They found that nearly 20% of the regions, 58 out of 289, have gained at least one additional week of winter days above freezing each year. Rising winter temperatures are raising the risk of ice storms.
“As the temperature pushes up closer to zero, but not quite above it, you can have more intense, high-risk freezing rain events,” climate scientist Gordon McBean told The London Free Press.
Ice storms can take a toll on Canada’s economy and put its citizens in danger. A severe ice storm that hit the eastern part of the country in January of 1998 left millions in the dark without power for several days and took the lives of at least 28 people.
“When we talk about the losses from storms, we usually quote the insured losses, how much the insurance companies paid out. But it’s very important to remember the effect on people, their health and mental health,” McBean added.
Watch now: Survivors of extreme weather events discuss their fears for their childrenWhy are warmer winters important?
Other studies on winter from Climate Central found it was the fastest-warming of all seasons, and as the planet overheats, the effects are also being felt in the United States. An analysis of 235 locations in the U.S. revealed that their winters warmed from 1970 to 2024 by an average of 4 degrees.
Warming winters can reduce mountain snowpack, a vital source of spring meltwater that several states rely on to refill reservoirs and help meet the rising demand for water during hot summers. Researchers in the United Kingdom have linked our warming world to an increasing chance of summer droughts in the Northern Hemisphere.
Warmer and shorter winters also raise health risks from pests like mosquitoes. Earlier spring thaws and later fall freezes lengthen the growing season for plants that release allergy-inducing pollen earlier in spring and later into fall, thereby extending the allergy season.
The tourism industry that relies on snow to support winter sports and recreation is also taking an economic hit. A popular tourist spot in Switzerland had to close recently because of a lack of snowfall.
What’s being done about warming winters?
Cooling off our warming world will mean a massive shift from dirty energy sources to cleaner, renewable options. On an individual basis, this could include installing solar panels and heat pumps in our homes.
We can also fight for our planet’s future by advocating for changes at work and talking to friends and family about climate issues.

******** ships now heading around WA coastline, Anthony Albanese reveals
******** ships now heading around WA coastline, Anthony Albanese reveals
The trio of ******** warships circling Australia are now off the WA coast, in line with Esperance, as Anthony Albanese insists the ADF is keeping a close eye on their movements.
But the Prime Minister has refused to say whether reports that Papua New Guinea had a two-week heads-up about the Peoples Liberation Army-Navy movements were correct or passed on to Australia.
Defence said the three ships — a frigate, a cruiser and a replenishment vessel — were about 1055km southeast of Perth on Sunday morning.
The task group has been heading steadily west for the past week, after conducting surprise live-fire exercises in the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand.
Camera IconRoyal *********** Navy sailors on HMAS Arunta keeping watch on People’s Liberation Army-Navy (PLA-N) Fuchi-class replenishment vessel Weishanhu and Jiangkai-class frigate Hengyang in the Tasman Sea. Credit: ADF/Royal *********** Navy
Mr Albanese originally said Australia had been given notice of the live firing in line with usual practice, but it emerged in estimates hearings last week that Defence in fact found out from Airservices Australia, after it was alerted by a Virgin Australia pilot who had to divert their plane upon hearing a broadcast from the ******** ships.
PNG Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko was reportedly briefed about the ships’ movements by the ******** ambassador in his country at least two weeks ahead of time.
Mr Albanese wouldn’t comment on whether PNG has passed the intelligence on.
“Well, what we don’t do at press conferences is relay what intelligence information the *********** government receives,” he told reporters in Sydney.
Shadow home affairs minister James Paterson said the ******** had clearly sent warships to the region “to make a diplomatic point” and Australia would be unwise if it didn’t heed the message.
“It’s absolutely remarkable that after a quote-unquote stabilised relationship between Australia and China, our comprehensive strategic partner, that they are giving weeks’ heads up to the PNG government of these exercises, but no notice at all to the *********** Government, despite the Prime Minister’s claims to the contrary,” he told ABC’s Insiders.
“We need to use all the tools available in our diplomatic arsenal to push back on this.”
Shadow defence minister Andrew Hastie said the overt signal of China’s military strength should remind Australians we couldn’t take anything for granted.
He and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton announced on Sunday the Coalition would put aside at least $3 billion to purchase another 28 F-35s, restoring a planned fourth squadron of the fighter planes that the Government cancelled in its budget last year and burning the total number up to 100.
“We are geographically isolated. We have very vulnerable lines of trade and communication – they need to be protected,” Mr Hastie told Sky News.
“The only way you can do that is by investing in your Defence Force.”
However, he said details of any extra funding needed to build more hangars or retain extra flight crew would be negotiated and detailed once the Coalition won office.
Mr Albanese said the ******** task group had been monitored by *********** or New Zealand ships and surveillance aircraft throughout their journey.
Currently the frigate HMAS Stuart – which is capable of air defence and surface and undersea strikes as well as surveillance – is tracking the ships.
“The Liberal Party must think people are goldfish here,” Mr Albanese said.
“In 2019 on Scott Morrison’s watch, there were ******** warships not around the coast, in Sydney Harbor, pulled up to Garden Island there given the welcome mat under the former Coalition government. In 2022 there were surveillance ships from China off the coast of Western Australia.
“There was no monitoring at that time, no monitoring whatsoever by the former government.”

4 Low-Effort Ways To Start Generating Passive Income This Week
4 Low-Effort Ways To Start Generating Passive Income This Week
miriam-doerr / iStock.com
Passive income is a great way to increase cash flow, which can be especially helpful when prices for most consumer goods are high. Having reliable passive income sources means you’re making money while you sleep.
Unfortunately, the biggest obstacle for most people is not knowing how to start. Luckily, there are many ways to generate passive income. Some require a little money to start, but others do not require any cash at all.
Learn More: Passive Income Expert: Here’s How I Make $27,000 Every Week
Check Out: Are You Rich or Middle Class? 8 Ways To Tell That Go Beyond Your Paycheck
Keep reading as we look into four ways you can start generating passive income this week.
Investing in the stock market is one of the easiest ways to make passive income quickly. Because most online brokers offer fractional share investing, you can start with very little cash.
“If you want to generate income from investments, there’s no better way than with dividend stocks or funds,” said Uli Ebensperger, co-founder and CEO of Ziggma Analytics. “Dividend-focused investments give you a chance to earn income through price appreciation and dividend payouts.”
It’s important to look beyond the current dividend yield when looking for dividend investments. These can be misleading at times. Instead, look for companies continuously paying out and raising their dividend. For example, Dividend Aristocrat companies have increased their dividend to shareholders in each of the past 25 years. These are solid companies that can help you build a consistent passive income stream.

If you’re looking for a way to make some extra cash quickly, have you considered selling things you no longer need around your house? If you were to dig through your drawers, I bet you’d find jewelry that hasn’t been worn in years.
With gold prices at all-time highs, selling unworn jewelry could be an easy way to earn money. Companies like The Alloy Market make selling jewelry easy and getting paid quickly.
“Selling gold and jewelry has been a passive income stream for folks for quite a long time,” said Brandon Aversano, founder and CEO of The Alloy Market. “In fact, selling gold has been around for thousands of years. Jewelry with high contents of gold (and silver, platinum or palladium) are worth more today than ever in history.
“In times of uncertainty and global instability, both banks and consumers turn to gold as a stable method of investment, causing the price of gold to skyrocket and benefitting customers looking to liquidate their items,” he added.
Story Continues
Aversano recommended going through old jewelry boxes and asking parents or grandparents if they have any jewelry they want to get rid of. You can also look for other items that include precious metals. Depending on the markups, most customers will receive offers ranging from $1,000 to $4,000.
Selling digital products like e-books, printables or online courses is another great way to create a passive income stream. While you’ll need to work to create the product, once they’re built, you can earn income each time it’s sold.
“This side hustle (digital products) involves producing a single product and then generating numerous sales over and over again through platforms such as Etsy, Gumroad or Shopify,” said Ed Huang, side hustle and finance expert at SideHustles.com. “To begin, it requires little to no money to get started. You need design capabilities (which can be acquired through free tools such as Canva), expertise in a specific field and access to the internet.”
Huang added, “For instance, you can produce a simple planner template for weddings or a budget sheet and sell it for $10 for each download. With 50 sales a month, that’s a simple $500 in passive income. Beginners might make $50 to $300 a month, but with additional items and effective marketing, you can make $1,000 to $5,000 or more.”
If you enjoy taking photographs or videos, you could turn your hobby into a passive income stream. This doesn’t require money to get started and with the cameras on most smartphones, you don’t need expensive equipment.
“Once uploaded, photographers and videographers receive pay for every download,” Huang said. “To start, all you need is a camera or smartphone, the ability to do a little editing and awareness of what kind of photos and videos people seek, such as commercial photographs, lifestyle photos and drone footage.
“For instance, a city photograph could pay 25 cents and a photograph of nature could pay $10 for a single download,” Huang added. “On a side-gig basis, one can earn $50 to $300 a month and full-time can yield $1,000 and even more in passive earnings over time.”

Matthews injury adds to Socceroos’ defensive woes
Matthews injury adds to Socceroos’ defensive woes
The Socceroos’ defensive stocks have taken another big hit ahead of March’s World Cup qualifiers with talented young centre-back Hayden Matthews’ season ended prematurely through injury.
English Championship club Portsmouth confirmed Matthews wouldn’t feature in their campaign again this season due to an ankle injury.
It is a blow to Matthews, 20, who had enjoyed a promising start to life in England after his rapid ascent to a Socceroos debut late last year.
The former Sydney FC defender joins Harry Souttar (achilles) and Alessandro Circati (ACL) on the sidelines, giving Socceroos boss Tony Popovic another headache ahead of crucial games against Indonesia and China.
Many of the tested central defensive options that are available are battling for minutes at club level.
Cameron Burgess is fit and will likely lead Australia’s defence in Souttar’s absence, but has fallen out of favour again at Ipswich Town, last playing a Premier League game on February 9.
Kye Rowles just joined MLS club DC United, though he has started his past two games.
Jason Geria has seen limited minutes at J1 League club Albirex Niigata while fringe defender Thomas Deng is yet to feature for Yokohama F. Marinos.
Popovic could turn to veteran Milos Degenek, while uncapped pair Nectar Triantis, who has been excellent in defensive midfield at Hibernian, and Kai Trewin (Melbourne City) are other options.
The Socceroos play Indonesia in Sydney on March 20 then China away five days later.
Australia then face Japan in Perth on June 5 and finish their campaign away to Saudi Arabia on June 10.
The Socceroos sit second behind Japan, but just a point ahead of the other four teams in group C.
The top two teams automatically qualify for the 2026 World Cup, while third and fourth are flung into another round of qualifiers.
In better news, striker Kusini Yengi returned from injury for Portsmouth on Saturday, playing 27 minutes off the bench.

Tuna From Trader Joe’s & Costco Recalled Due to ‘Potentially Fatal’ Form of Food Poisoning
Tuna From Trader Joe’s & Costco Recalled Due to ‘Potentially Fatal’ Form of Food Poisoning
It’s time to take a quick trip to your pantry because yet another popular food item has been recalled. In a statement released on February 7, 2025, Tri-Union Seafoods announced that it was recalling select lots of canned tuna products sold under the Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s brand names.
The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the “easy open” pull tab can lid on some of the tuna products encountered a manufacturing defect that could cause the seal to leak or be contaminated with clostridium botulinum, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning.
According to the World Health Organization, symptoms of this particular type of food poisoning include marked fatigue, weakness, and vertigo, usually followed by blurred vision, dry mouth, and difficulty in swallowing and speaking, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation.
Customers who purchased the recalled tuna are asked to return it to the retailer for a full refund, throw it away, or contact Tri-Union Seafoods directly for a retrieval kit and a coupon for a replacement product.
The specific products recalled include:
Trader Joe’s label—Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Wisconsin
Genova 7 oz.—Costco in Florida and Georgia
Genova 5 oz.—Harris Teeter, Publix, H-E-B, Kroger, Safeway, Walmart, and independent retailers in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Texas
Van Camp’s label—Walmart and independent retailers in Pennsylvania, Florida, and New Jersey
News of this tuna recall comes amid a myriad of recent food recalls. Earlier this month, a recall of two million baked goods, including donuts from Dunkin’, was upgraded to Class 2 by the FDA.

Napoli keep Serie A title race open with Inter draw
Napoli keep Serie A title race open with Inter draw
League leaders Inter Milan have conceded in the 87th minute to draw 1-1 at title rivals Napoli in a much anticipated clash between the Serie A top two.
Simone Inzaghi, whose side remain one point ahead of Napoli (57), was already without first-choice goalkeeper Yann Sommer, defender Matteo Darmian and midfielders Carlos Augusto and Nicola Zalewski coming into Saturday night’s game at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Naples.
Inter were then forced to take off scorer Federico Dimarco and Hakan Calhanoglu early in the second half, and the manager was asked at a press conference if this had a major bearing on the result which keeps Napoli hot on their heels.
“Definitely. We were already in an emergency, Dimarco and Calhanoglu asked for a substitution after the first half,” Inzaghi said.
“They tried to hold on a little, but they couldn’t run well … the guys did their best against an excellent team that grew a lot in the second half.
“We’ll take the draw. For the equalising goal we could have done better, we will review and analyse.”
Inter conceded seven minutes after Inzaghi replaced defender Alessandro Bastoni. Luckily, this was not another injury worry but a tactical change after Napoli introduced Danish midfielder Philip Billing, who netted the late goal.
Atalanta missed the chance to move closer to the top, their scoreless draw with second from bottom Venezia leaves them third on 55 points, three points behind leaders Inter.
“We are all there, it is an open championship. Lazio and Juventus can also get back into it, but I’m confident,” Inzaghi said.
Juve are fourth on 49 points ahead of hosting lowly Verona on Monday, with Lazio (47) fifth before their visit to eighth-placed AC Milan on Sunday.
Elsewhere, a 38th-minute Florian Thauvin penalty was enough for 10th-placed Udinese to down Parma, who remain 17th.

China’s DeepSeek claims theoretical cost-profit ratio of 545% per day
China’s DeepSeek claims theoretical cost-profit ratio of 545% per day
BEIJING (Reuters) – ******** AI startup DeepSeek on Saturday disclosed some cost and revenue data related to its hit V3 and R1 models, claiming a theoretical cost-profit ratio of up to 545% per day, though it cautioned that actual revenue would be significantly lower.
This marks the first time the Hangzhou-based company has revealed any information about its profit margins from less computationally intensive “inference” tasks, the stage after training that involves trained AI models making predictions or performing tasks, such as through chatbots.
The revelation could further rattle AI stocks outside China that plunged in January after web and app chatbots powered by its R1 and V3 models surged in popularity worldwide.
The sell-off was partly caused by DeepSeek’s claims that it spent less than $6 million on chips used to train the model, much less than what U.S. rivals like OpenAI have spent.
The chips DeepSeek claims it used, Nvidia’s H800, are also much less powerful than what OpenAI and other U.S. AI firms have access to, making investors question even further U.S. AI firms’ pledges to spend billions of dollars on cutting-edge chips.
DeepSeek said in a GitHub post published on Saturday that assuming the cost of renting one H800 chip is $2 per hour, the total daily inference cost for its V3 and R1 models is $87,072. In contrast, the theoretical daily revenue generated by these models is $562,027, leading to a cost-profit ratio of 545%. In a year this would add up to just over $200 million in revenue.
However, the firm added that its “actual revenue is substantially lower” because the cost of using its V3 model is lower than the R1 model, only some services are monetized as web and app access remain free, and developers pay less during off-peak hours.
