HMD survey reveals horrific child safety danger in the online world HMD survey reveals horrific child safety danger in the online world A shocking number of *********** children are being targeted by strangers in the online world, with some 40 per cent of kids aged between eight and 15 regularly contacted by someone they didn’t know. More than that, 21 per cent of kids report strangers have tried to move them onto an encrypted chat platform and 49 per cent report seeing something on social media or messaging apps that they wish they hadn’t. Those are some of the disturbing findings from a global survey from Finnish phone manufacturer HMD, which surveyed 12,394 parents and children from the ***, the US, Australia, India and Germany over January. In Australia, 32 per cent of children said they had been exposed to or sent ******* or violent content and 49 per cent report they were scared or upset by something they had seen on their phones. Globally, more than one in three children, or 37 per cent, report a stranger has tried to move them into an encrypted chat. The survey suggests widespread dissatisfaction in *********** youngsters about the omnipresence of smartphones in their lives. Camera IconThe HMD survey suggests *********** children are being exposed to widespread harm and danger in the online world. NewsWire / Gaye Gerard Credit: News Corp Australia Almost all kids understand why their parents would want to check and monitor their phone use, the survey suggests, and two thirds said they felt pressured to have a phone because the people around them had phones. Child and adolescent clinical psychologist Dr Grace Hancock said the results showed the country needed to “better protect kids” and “manage this risk”. “We have a great opportunity with 94 per cent of *********** children understanding that their parents may want to check their phone use,” she said. “They acknowledge that this is reasonable. Having a device which is designed to make this easy is important, to allow children and teens to have the independence that they seek while also keeping them safe because they don’t have the cognitive and social maturity to do this for themselves just yet.” The survey follows the federal parliament’s world-first ban on social media for users under the age of 16, legislated in December last year. The law bans teens from social media apps like TikTok, Instagram, Reddit, Snapchat and Facebook. Prime Minster Anthony Albanese said the legislation would help young Australians develop healthier relationships. “One of the things I want to see is young Australians, older too, having conversations with each other,” he said. State parliaments have also moved to clamp down on smartphones, including banning the devices during school hours. Mr Albanese said those reforms had already delivered positive outcomes. “There’s more concentration in classrooms, they’re playing with each other at play lunch and engaging with others in a face-to-face way,” he said. Camera IconPrime Minister Anthony Albanese and Communications Minister Michelle Rowland legislated the social media ban to protect children from harm in the online space. NewsWire / Martin Ollman Credit: News Corp Australia “We’re getting better outcomes, healthier outcomes.” South *********** Premier Peter Malinauskas pushed for a state-based social media ban for kids before the federal government’s move. Speaking at the Adelaide Convention Centre in October, Mr Malinauskas said his wife Annabel had grown alarmed about children locked in to social media after reading The Anxious Generation from US social psychologist Jonathan Haidt. The book charts the destructive effects of tech on childhood development. “Bell read the book The Anxious Generation … she read the book and turned to me one night and said, ‘you better effing do something about this’.” Source link #HMD #survey #reveals #horrific #child #safety #danger #online #world Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

The Trump administration blocks student-loan borrowers from online access to decades-old affordable repayment plans The Trump administration blocks student-loan borrowers from online access to decades-old affordable repayment plans Trump’s Education Department removed online applications for income-driven student-loan repayment plans. The move was in response to a federal court upholding a pause on the SAVE plan. This means that borrowers cannot access plans intended to give them more affordable monthly payments. Student-loan borrowers lost access to online applications for repayment plans meant to allow for affordable monthly payments. In response to a federal court ruling that upheld a preliminary injunction on the SAVE student-loan repayment plan, President Donald Trump’s Education Department removed online income-driven repayment applications from Federal Student Aid’s website. A three-sentence notice on FSA’s website stated: “A federal court issued an injunction preventing the U.S. Department of Education from implementing the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan and parts of other income-driven repayment (IDR) plans. As a result, the IDR and online loan consolidation applications are temporarily unavailable. Borrowers can still submit a paper loan consolidation application.” Income-driven repayment plans, established by Congress in 1993, give borrowers monthly payments intended to be affordable based on the income they receive. After 20 or 25 years of payments, the plans allow for forgiveness of borrowers’ remaining balances. Many borrowers seeking relief through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness plan, which cancels student debt for government and nonprofit workers after 10 years of qualifying payments, used income-driven repayment plans. The remaining available repayment plans include the standard 10-year repayment plans, which typically have the highest monthly payments. The Education Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider on the impact of the application pause and what borrowers should do in the meantime. The removal of the income-driven repayment plan applications follows a tumultuous legal battle surrounding former President Joe Biden’s SAVE plan. The plan was intended to give borrowers cheaper monthly payments with a shorter timeline for loan forgiveness. A group of GOP-led states filed a lawsuit last summer to block the plan, and 8 million enrolled borrowers have been in an interest-free forbearance since then as the legal process continues. A federal court most recently upheld a pause on the plan, sending it back to a district court to issue a final ruling. Guidance from the Education Department on January 15 said that borrowers enrolled in SAVE will not have to make payments until December at the earliest while student-loan servicers update payment plans for impacted borrowers. Persis Yu, deputy executive director and managing counsel at the advocacy group Student Borrower Protection Center, said in a statement that “shutting down access to all income-based repayment plans is not what the 8th Circuit ordered.” “This was a choice by the Trump Administration and a cruel one that will inflict massive pain on millions of working families,” Yu said. Pro-Ukraine protests across US after Trump-Zelensky clash
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Pro-Ukraine protests across US after Trump-Zelensky clash Pro-Ukraine protests across US after Trump-Zelensky clash Pro-Ukraine protests have taken place across the US after Donald Trump and JD Vance’s angry exchange with Volodymr Zelensky at the White House. Hundreds of people gathered in New York, Los Angeles and Boston to express their support for Ukraine after the furious row in the Oval Office. Protesters holding pro-Ukraine signs also lined a road in Waitsfield, Vermont, where Vice-President Vance and his family were visiting for a ski holiday. US media reported the family moved to an undisclosed location from their planned ski resort because of the demonstrations. A protest in Waitsfield against the Trump-Vance administration had been organised earlier in the week – before the US president and vice-president’s clash with Zelensky – but many signs referenced the row and Russia’s war with Ukraine. “I think [Friday’s] performance at the White House has probably galvanised even more people to come out today,” Judy Daly, from Indivisible Mad River Valley, the group which organised the protest, told Vermont Public Radio. “[Vance] crossed the line,” protester Cori Giroux added. Ahead of the Vance family’s trip, Vermont’s governor Phil Scott had urged people to “be respectful” to them. Scott, the Republican governor who refused to vote for Trump, said: “I welcome the vice-president and his family to Vermont and hope they enjoy their weekend here. “It’s no surprise they chose Vermont, we’ve had a lot of snow this winter, which has been good for our economy.” He added: “I hope Vermonters remember the vice-president is here on a family trip with his young children and, while we may not always agree, we should be respectful. “Please join me in welcoming them to Vermont, and hoping they have an opportunity to experience what makes our state, and Vermonters, so special.” Vance, who has three young children with his wife Usha, has not publicly commented on the protests. Counter-protesters supporting Trump and Vance were also reportedly in Waitsfield. Demonstrators also gathered outside Tesla stores across the US on Saturday to protest against Elon Musk’s push to slash government spending. Musk, the billionaire chief executive of Tesla, has been tasked by US President Trump to oversee the Department of Government Efficiency, more popularly known as Doge. In extraordinary scenes in the Oval Office on Friday, Trump clashed with the Ukrainian president, telling him to make a deal with Russia “or we are out”. At one point, Trump told Zelensky he was not thankful enough for US military and political support during Ukraine’s fight against Russia’s invasion, and that he was “gambling with World War Three”. Vance also accused the Ukrainian president of being disrespectful and “litigating” the situation in front of the media. Zelensky will join European leaders on Sunday for a summit on the Ukraine war, hosted by *** Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. Ahead of the meeting in London, *** Chancellor Rachel Reeves signed a loan agreement worth £2.26bn ($2.84bn) with her Ukrainian counterpart, to pay for further military support and the rebuilding of Ukraine in future. A-League Men: Perth Glory’s finals hopes officially over after 4-1 loss to Western Sydney Wanderers A-League Men: Perth Glory’s finals hopes officially over after 4-1 loss to Western Sydney Wanderers Perth Glory’s ********** A-League Men season has continued as they failed to capitalise on an early lead to fall 4-1 to Western Sydney Wanderers at CommBank Stadium. With six games to go, their unimaginable finals chances have officially been erased for good as their 13th loss of the season meant they sit 19 points off the pace with six games to go. All the hallmarks of Glory’s woeful worst was on show in Western Sydney, as errors were pounced upon and their rickety defence reared its ugly head once again. Adam Taggart gave Perth an early lead with his seventh goal of the season, but a pair of Aydan Hammond strikes saw Western Sydney go into the break with a 2-1 lead. Camera IconAydan Hammond (second left) celebrates a goal. Credit: Cameron Spencer/Getty Images And the second half saw the Wanderers put the game beyond doubt as Oscar Priestman ruthlessly a hospital pass, before a quick counter-attack exposed Perth’s press. It was the eighth time this season they have conceded at least three goals in a game and their league-worst goal difference of -32 is 15 worse than last-placed Brisbane Roar. “I just don’t think we managed the game. They came out strong, even before we scored the goal and started the game really well,” Zdrilic told Paramount+ post-game. “Then we got the goal and I thought that was exactly what we needed, but we just didn’t manage the moments after that. Camera IconAydan Hammond collides with Oli Sail and Tomi Mrcela. Credit: Cameron Spencer/Getty Images “Even at 1-1 I thought that we didn’t have to concede the second one. You go in at half time 1-1, that’s no problem, but that second one was a bit of a killer. “Against a team like Wanderers at home, we give them that momentum that they used and made it difficult for ourselves.” The warning signs were there early for Glory when Brandon Borrello bullied Yuka Okamoto off a bouncing ball in the box, but Josh Risdon came to rescue to stop Ollie Sapsford’s mis-hit shot from mere yards out from dribbling over the line. But Perth hit the front when Yuto Misao’s chipped ball found Lachie Wales and Taggart, who smartly checked his run to the near post, knocked the ball between Lawrence Thomas’ legs. Camera IconJosh Risdon competes in the air. Credit: Cameron Spencer/Getty Images However, it took less than 10 minutes for the hosts to equalise when Perth failed to fully clear a corner and Hammond evaded Patrick Wood’s attempted challenge before firing the ball into the top corner. The Wanderers grew in confidence as the tricky Hammond began to combine well with Borrello, as Perth struggled to find space in the final third outside of a Wood strike which Thomas did well to see off. And it was 2-1 in the 39th minute when Taggart could not corral a clipped pass to him and the Wanderers immediately transitioned upfield, ending in Ollie Sapsford’s cross being smashed onto the post by Bozhidar Kraev and Hammond tucking home the rebound. Even though the Glory were off the pace in the opening half, they almost went into half time level when Risdon’s flicked header was well-saved by Thomas. Camera IconJack Clisby holds off Patrick Wood. Credit: Cameron Spencer/Getty Images Misao twice came inches from levelling the match in the minutes following the restart when he thundered a vicious strike against the woodwork from distance, before hitting the side-net minutes later. But the Glory’s race was run and the game won for the Wanderers in the 49th minute when Oli Sail passed to an under-pressure Luke Amos and the midfielder coughed up possession, giving Priestman an easy finish. Hammond almost had a hat-trick when he stole in between Sail and Tomi Mrcela, but the latter did enough to turn the ball away from danger. Camera IconNicholas Pennington chases Bozhidar Kraev. Credit: Cameron Spencer/Getty Images But Western Sydney did find a fourth when Perth’s hesitation to press high up the pitch was punished. With the ball in dispute, three Glory players half-committed to suffocating the space, Cleaur wriggled free and started a counter-attack down the right, which was finished when Kraev converted Sapsford’s square ball. Sail prevented Hammond from grabbing a third with a sharp save and Alex Gersbach was denied by the bar, while Misao again came close from distance for Perth late. Jofra Archer: England bowler keen to play Tests again, says Brendon McCullum Jofra Archer: England bowler keen to play Tests again, says Brendon McCullum Since his return, Archer has taken part in the 2024 T20 World Cup, the home series against Australia and tours of the West Indies, India and most recently the Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Archer took seven wickets as he played in six of the eight games in India, before claiming six wickets in England’s three Champions Trophy matches. “Jofra’s been out of competitive cricket for a couple of years, it’s taken a little bit of time to get that rhythm of gameplay back but I think he’s been really good,” said McCullum. “He’s bowled high pace, he’s played a lot of cricket, he’s been able to get a significant workload under his belt throughout this tournament [the Champions Trophy]. “We’ve seen moments of how great Jof is, even tonight [on Saturday] a couple of wickets he took and the other night against Afghanistan, three with the new ball.” England’s next Test is a one-off game against Zimbabwe on 22 May, which clashes with the conclusion of the Indian Premier League where Archer is set to play for Rajasthan Royals. NRL probe complaint against Warriors’ assistant coach NRL probe complaint against Warriors’ assistant coach The NRL is investigating an allegation that Warriors assistant coach Richard Agar grabbed a British journalist by the throat during a confrontation in Las Vegas. The incident is alleged to have happened behind the scenes at Allegiant Stadium, where four rugby league games were on Sunday (AEDT) played as part of the NRL’s annual foray into the American market. Englishman Agar had been in Vegas for the Warriors’ clash against Canberra, who dominated the Auckland side for a big 30-8 win. The journalist was on site to cover matches between Super League sides Wigan and Warrington, and the English women’s team and Australia. Warriors chief executive Cameron George did not immediately respond to AAP’s request for comment, but the NRL has confirmed it is looking into the allegation. Agar previously worked with Andrew Webster on Samoa’s coaching staff, and joined the NRL club for the Warriors head coach’s first season at the helm in 2023. Before that he coached more than 200 Super League games across stints at Hull FC, Wakefield Trinity and Leeds Rhinos. These Are the 10 Most Overpriced Elite US Universities Based on Cost and Starting Salary These Are the 10 Most Overpriced Elite US Universities Based on Cost and Starting Salary janniswerner / Getty Images Getting a college diploma can make a huge difference in the amount of money you earn — a previous GOBankingRates article found that a bachelor’s degree could add an extra $1.5 million in income over the course of a career vs. only a high school degree. But college educations don’t come cheap. Be Aware: Do Your Student Loans Affect Your Credit? Find Out: 12 SUVs With the Most Reliable Engines The average cost of college in the U.S. is $38,270 per student per year, according to the Education Data Initiative. That total includes tuition, living costs, books and other expenses. For private, non-profit schools, the average is $58,628 per year. If you want to go to an elite university, you can expect to pay even more. The typical cost to attend an Ivy League school ranges between $86,366 a year (Harvard University) and $93,417 a year (Columbia University), according to an analysis from the Ivy Coach website. Read Next: If Trump Eliminates the Department of Education, Do You Still Have To Pay Your Student Loans? The financial pain of paying high costs can be eased if you get a good return on your college investment. This can be measured in many ways, not all of which have to do with money. But if you are concerned about the financial payoff, then one way to determine the worth of a college degree is to gauge how much income you can expect to earn from it — and how that compares to similar universities. This was the focus of a recent study from Edumentors, a U.K.-based provider of tutoring services. Edumentors compared tuition and living costs to employment rates and starting salaries at the world’s top universities to try and get a clear picture of what students “truly pay for” and what they get in return. The idea was to determine which elite universities are the most overpriced based on overall costs to go there and starting salaries once you graduate. For its study, Edumentors looked at 46 elite universities on four continents — including 14 U.S. schools. According to that research, the most overpriced elite college in the United States is Northwestern University. Students there can expect to pay nearly $116,000 a year in overall costs and graduate with a median starting salary of $61,100 a year. This means the overall annual cost is about 1.89 times higher than the median starting salary. Here’s a look at the 10 most overpriced elite universities in the U.S., according to Edumentors. College Overall Cost (Including Tuition and Other Costs) Median Starting Salary of Grads Difference Between Overall Cost/Median Starting Salary Northwestern University $115,719/year $61,100/year 1.8939 Columbia University $97,003 $55,190 1.7576 Cornell University $92,150 $55,813 1.6510 University of California, Berkeley $73,828 $47,473 1.5552 Brown University $91,676 $61,400 1.4931 Boston University $87,122 $75,518 1.1537 University of Chicago $77,800 $75,200 1.0346 New York University $87,448 $84,653 1.0330 Duke University $89,326 $88,200 1.0128 University of Pennsylvania $92,288 $92,500 0.9977 More From GOBankingRates This article originally appeared on GOBankingRates.com: These Are the 10 Most Overpriced Elite US Universities Based on Cost and Starting Salary Source link #Overpriced #Elite #Universities #Based #Cost #Starting #Salary Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Barry is always by my side, says Paul Barry is always by my side, says Paul Alex Moss BBC News, Yorkshire BBC The Chuckle Brothers spent more than 30 years on BBC television Chuckle Brothers star Paul Chuckle made a promise to his late brother Barry that he would keep on making people laugh. Here he talks about life without his comic sidekick and how humour and happiness can exist alongside grief. If you were a child of a certain generation, then chances are you were familiar with the farcical adventures of the Chuckle Brothers. The duo, born Paul and Barry Elliott from Rotherham, were a staple in British homes with their TV show ChuckleVision, which aired nearly 300 episodes during the 1990s and 2000s. Its premise was good old-fashioned, family humour. Paul and Barry were the well-meaning but hapless, accident-prone brothers who unintentionally caused chaos wherever they went, often with the mutterings of “To me, to you”. Their intuitive performance style and natural chemistry made the pair’s bond even more special. When Barry died from bone ******* aged 73 in 2018 and asked whether Paul would carry on entertaining, there was never a question of doing anything else. In 2019, ChuckleVision was named the greatest CBBC series of all time Paul, 77, reflects: “He said, ‘you’re not going to pack it in are you?’ and I said ‘no of course I’m not’. I mean what else would I do? It’s too late to join a football team.” Having forged an inseparable bond on screen and off over decades of performing together, it was a difficult adjustment. Paul says: “I was always the straight one and Barry was the comedian. “I would feed the jokes and he would give the punchline but now I’ve got to do it on my own.” But from panto appearances to frequent DJ stints in nightclubs, Paul continues to keep busy and fulfil his brother’s wish. Although no longer physically by his side, Paul says Barry stays close in spirit, especially when he is performing which brings “immense comfort”. “Since 1963 I’d never really been on stage without him by my side. “But I’m used to it now and I feel he’s with me all the time. Whenever I walk on stage I feel he’s there and it’s a lovely feeling.” His career has seen a slight directional change with a new gangster film, Fall to the Top, set to air next year showing a more serious side to the comical brother. “Everyone expects me to be silly and stupid but now I’m a stupid killer,” he adds. “It’s completely different to other things I’ve done but I really enjoyed it.” Asked whether Barry would approve of his role, he replies: “He loves it, I know he does. He’s always said I was a ****** so-and-so.” Marie Curie Barry Chuckle is supporting Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal, the charity’s biggest annual fundraising campaign As well as doing what he does best – entertaining – Paul is an ambassador for Marie Curie, the end-of-life charity that provides support for people living with terminal illness and their families. He talks warmly about his role and how helping with fundraising enables Barry’s legacy to live on. “They were there for Barry at the end and for my father-in-law as well when he died. “The nurses were such a huge support to our family, coming in at such a difficult time and their visits gave us all a moment to breathe.” Though heartbroken by the loss of his beloved Barry, Paul says the outlook has to be positive. “Life doesn’t end for the people who are left behind, it’s hard but you have to keep on going.” He adds: “You have to get out there and enjoy yourself because you never know how long it will last.” Listen to highlights from South Yorkshire on BBC Sounds, catch up with the latest episode of Look North. Wanderers go fourth in ALM with big win over Glory Wanderers go fourth in ALM with big win over Glory Young attacker Aydan Hammond has scored a super brace to lead Western Sydney to a 4-1 thumping of Perth Glory and up to fourth place on the A-League Men table. The Wanderers had to come from behind to claim their third win on the bounce after Adam Taggart opened the scoring in the fifth minute at CommBank Stadium. But Hammond equalised with a wonder strike in the 14th minute, then put the Wanderers ahead in the 39th, before Oscar Priestman and Bozhidar Kraev struck in the second half. With the win over coach Alen Stajcic’s former side, the Wanderers sit just a point behind second-placed Western United and third-placed Adelaide, and ahead of Melbourne City on goal difference. The Wanderers should have taken the lead in the second minute when Zac Sapsford had a tap-in cleared off the line by Josh Risdon. Three minutes later, Yuto Misao launched a super ball down the left for Lachie Wales, who kept the ball in play then brilliantly cut it back for Taggart to volley home. Minutes later, the ball skidded out to Hammond at the edge of the area and he beat a defender, cut on to his right boot and unleashed a wonderful strike into the top corner. Western Sydney took the lead when Taggart lost the ball and the Wanderers streamed forward, with Sapsford launching the ball towards Kraev at the far post. Kraev’s shot bounced off the woodwork, but Hammond was on hand to tap home. On the stroke of halftime, Lawrence Thomas pulled off a big save to deny Risdon’s goal-bound header. Misao cannoned a fierce strike into the post almost immediately after the break, then clipped the woodwork again less than a minute later. The Wanderers struck when Oli Sail passed to an under-pressure Luke Amos, whose poor attempted back-pass fell to Oscar Priestman to score. Western Sydney sealed victory on the counter in the 66th minute, with Sapsford teeing up Kraev to stroke home a fourth goal. Risdon limped off in the 80th minute and had his right ankle iced. Both teams aren’t in action again until March 15, when the Wanderers play Melbourne Victory, while David Zdrilic’s 11th-placed Perth host Brisbane. Rep. Jasmine Crockett apologizes to the world after Trump, Vance attack on Zelensky Rep. Jasmine Crockett apologizes to the world after Trump, Vance attack on Zelensky Rep. Jasmine Crockett apologized to the world for the way President Donald Trump and JD Vance behaved in the Oval Office in an explosive meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Ukrainian leader was accused by the president and Vance of being ungrateful and of disrespecting the United State on Friday in a heated exchange that shocked the world. While Republicans were quick to side with Trump, Democrats joined many world leaders in condemning the White House for its conduct. “Let me say this to the WORLD, I am sorry that the bright light America used to be is dimming,” Crockett of Texas’s 30th Congressional District said in a post on X and referred to Trump and Vance as “bullies.” She also referred to Trump as a “draft dodger,” referring to how the president was excused from service during the Vietnam War with a reportedly faked bone spurs excuse. “I don’t care what title you hold! This isn’t some long gone reality tv show or failed casino….this is war!” Crockett said. “How dare a draft dodging dumb dupe humiliate an ally and berate an actual brave man who has actually been on a battlefield for his people?!” Jasmine Crockett called Trump and Vance ‘bullies’ for how they treated the Ukrainian leader (Call to Activism/X) Crockett responded further after a follower said they had been waiting for her reaction to the controversy. “I was traveling, in meetings, and recording,” Crockett followed up. “I’m just embarrassed & heartbroken to see the idiocy being celebrated because literally people are too lost in the cult or just to uninformed to understand how dangerous this is.” The congresswoman also conveyed a simple yet effective message to DOGE boss Elon Musk earlier this week. Crockett was asked at the Capitol Thursday by Joe Gallina of Call to Activism if she could speak directly to Musk, what would she say. The extraordinary moment Trump and Vance lashed out at Zelensky in the Oval Office in front of the media (Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved) “F*** off,” Crockett replied. A video of the response went viral. Crockett has not held back from unleashing on the Trump administration. Ryan Peake: Convicted ex-motorcycle gang member and prisoner qualifies for Open with win Ryan Peake: Convicted ex-motorcycle gang member and prisoner qualifies for Open with win Former *********** motorcycle gang member and prisoner Ryan Peake has qualified for this year’s Open at Portrush after winning the New Zealand Open. However, because of his conviction, the 31-year-old left-hander from Perth will need clearance to travel to the tournament, which takes place in Northern Ireland from 17-20 July. As a 21-year-old he was part of an outlawed motorcycle gang, the Rebels, and was sentenced to five years in prison for a serious assault, but says that focusing on golf has turned his life around. “Yeah, I’m pretty lost for words at the moment, [the win is] life-changing,” he said. “It’s one hell of a story, one hell of a moment.” A promising golfer in his youth, Peake was contacted in prison by coach Ritchie Smith, who encouraged him to take up the clubs again after his release from custody. Now a rookie on the Australasian Tour, he almost missed the tournament at the Millbrook Resort course near Queenstown after his entry to New Zealand was delayed by immigration officials. He only arrived on Tuesday before Thursday’s opening round of the event, which was co-sanctioned by the Australasian and Asian Tours. Peake was close to tears as he celebrated with family and friends after the one-shot victory, which earned him Aus$201,600 (£99,500). He said the win came down to “just belief”, adding: “I always knew I could do it, it was just a matter of time when I was going to do it. “This is what I do now. I want to be here and just play golf. The story is what it is, but I’m just out here playing golf. “From this morning when I woke up four shots behind, to chase down a win. I’ve never been in a final group to now being a member of the Asian Tour.” He finished one shot clear of compatriot Jack Thompson, South African Ian Snyman and Japan’s Kazuki Higa. The Streaming Rush to Turn Scripture Into Scripts The Streaming Rush to Turn Scripture Into Scripts A once-beloved king slips into madness as wary confidants surround him, breathless for his next maneuver. A soldier wrestles with his dueling loyalties toward family and friendship. A young man from a humble background defeats a brute, not knowing that the victory sets him on a path to ascend into power. With its interpersonal intrigue and battlefield bloodshed, “House of David” looks like it could be an alternate-universe of “Game of Thrones.” But rather than an adaptation of a high fantasy franchise from the 1990s, its source material goes back millenniums. “House of David,” a series that premiered on Amazon Prime Video on Thursday, tells the story of David, the biblical shepherd who used a sling and stone to defeat the giant Goliath before assuming King Saul’s throne. It is part of the original faith-based programming that streaming services are unveiling to court the viewers who have made “The Chosen,” a prestige drama about the life of Jesus Christ, one of the most successful crowdfunded television or film projects of all time. “The sheer size of the audience is enormous,” said Jon Erwin, who pitched “House of David” to Amazon and co-directed several of the first season’s eight episodes. “It is the largest underserved niche audience in the world.” Viewership figures from streaming shows are rarely made public, but the team behind “The Chosen” estimates that the show has been watched by more than 280 million unique viewers worldwide, a third of whom it says are not religious. The hit show feels more like a workplace comedy-drama, a version of “The West Wing” set in Galilee, than the direct evangelism of the widely translated “The Jesus Film” (1979) or the storybook sermons of the 1990s animated series “VeggieTales.” As “The Chosen” approaches its predestined ending — the biblical story of Jesus’ crucifixion, Resurrection and Ascension — streaming services are looking for what could capture its fervent audience next. “Chosen” spinoffs about the spread of Christianity and Old Testament figures are already in the works. And other studios are eager to adapt material that has zero copyright protection and billions of adherents. “House of David” is among the first fruits of Amazon’s collaboration with Wonder Project, led by Erwin, the director of movies like “I Can Only Imagine” and “Jesus Revolution,” and Kelly Merryman Hoogstraten, a former Netflix and YouTube executive. Vernon Sanders, the co-head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, said the company was responding to viewership data about TV shows and movies with religious elements. “On a Wing and a Prayer,” a movie starring Dennis Quaid as a Christian family man who must land a plane after the pilot has a heart attack, was unexpectedly popular. “This audience often is pigeonholed in a way that doesn’t really speak to their sort of entertainment,” Sanders said. “They love big action movies, they love rom-coms and they love inspiring stories.” “House of David” has a little bit of everything. The collage of characters striving for power or peace, including Saul’s son Jonathan, a close friend of David’s, is reminiscent of the courtly intrigue in glossy dramas like “The Tudors.” There are jokes, too: “I advise you to get plenty of sleep now,” the seer Samuel says to a soon-to-be father. “I prophesy you will need it.” Before flashing back in time, the show opens with a famous battle that deviates from the biblical story by having Goliath pierce David with a spear. As the young shepherd begins to bleed into the earth, the camera focuses on a rock within his reach. Making a TV show based on a religious text is a different task from adapting a book series that is considered sacred only by its most avowed fans. For “House of David,” pastors, historians and biblical and rabbinical scholars were consulted for accuracy. But centuries-old sources translated from Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic do not necessarily make for snappy dialogue. Script writers must put words into the mouths of adored figures and create scenes that connect the dots between events in the original text, which some viewers of “The Chosen” may see as blasphemous. Casting also means putting modern faces to ancient names. Erwin said that the actors in “House of David” did not have to be religious, but that the production wanted people who were excited about the story. David is played by Michael Iskander, a 23-year-old actor who was born in Egypt and is making his screen debut after appearing in the Broadway musical “Kimberly Akimbo.” Portraying Goliath is Martyn Ford, a 6-foot-8 bodybuilder and actor from England who has played heavies in the “Fast and Furious” series. His nickname is the Nightmare. The show was filmed in hilly patches of Greece and Canada, stand-ins for the Judean Mountains in the West Bank and Israel. That location filming is a sign of renewed investment into religious entertainment. Dallas Jenkins, the creator of “The Chosen,” said that dedicated viewers of biblical stories often forgave scrappier productions with rough edges, but that high production values make it easier to reach broader audiences. “There’s no reason that some of the most famous stories in the world can’t be treated as though they are a relevant part of the culture,” Jenkins said. A lasting religious revival in Hollywood is unlikely, said Diane Winston, a professor at the University of Southern California who studies religion in media and pointed to the cyclical nature of faith in entertainment. But the increased outreach, she said, could be a savvy financial move for a secular business looking to spiritual audiences. “Streaming services are companies that need to make money, and what drives them is getting more eyeballs,” she said. “If they think faith-based content is going to get that for them, they will invest in it.” Erwin said Wonder Project shows would lean on religious themes and morals while trying to serve an audience with diverse tastes. Amazon has also greenlit the studio’s “It’s Not Like That,” the story of a widower minister and a divorced mother of teenagers who must now navigate lives as single parents in the church. Netflix’s deal for faith-based productions is with the mogul Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin, a Christian motivational speaker who has previously produced secular films and adaptations of popular Christian memoirs. The partnership will begin with “R&B,” the modern-day retelling of Ruth and Boaz, which places the story in Tennessee and follows a young woman finding love after escaping the Atlanta music scene and caring for a widowed woman played by Phylicia Rashad. It is no mistake that streaming services are investing in faith-based entertainment after the success of “The Chosen.” The actor who plays Jesus, Jonathan Roumie, has been swarmed by fans who look to him as a stand-in for Christ, he recently told The New York Times, including one woman who hoped he could heal her child who uses a wheelchair. Season 5 of the show’s planned seven-season arc, which includes the Last Supper and Judas’s betrayal of Jesus, will premiere in theaters this month (with episodes bundled in sets) before streaming exclusively on Prime Video for 90 days. It will then be available on its own app for free, but can no longer be found on Netflix, Hulu and Peacock. The next chapters in the “Chosen” universe will include “The Acts of the Apostles” and stand-alone seasons that follow the biblical figures Joseph and Moses. Jenkins is also developing a reality wilderness program, “The Chosen in the Wild With Bear Grylls,” and a children’s animated series, “The Chosen Adventures.” As part of the deal that gives Prime Video exclusive streaming rights to the main series, the company will get the first look at all projects related to “The Chosen.” This latest push by streaming services has the potential to expand their international audiences, with large Christian communities in countries including Nigeria and the Philippines. Many of the productions will also appeal to an ascendant group in the United States, where President Trump has received substantial support from white evangelical Christians. But Erwin said Wonder Project’s productions were not intended to be partisan. He emphasized that an underdog story like David toppling Goliath has value for anyone, regardless of religious or political affiliation. “We might all have different opinions on the size and scope of government or free enterprise,” Erwin said. “But at our core, we really do believe in a lot of the same things.” Source link #Streaming #Rush #Turn #Scripture #Scripts Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Lydia Ko claims four-shot LPGA win in Singapore Lydia Ko claims four-shot LPGA win in Singapore World No.3 Lydia Ko has continued her stellar career resurgence with a four-stroke victory in the LPGA Tour’s HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore. The 27-year-old New Zealander shot a solid closing 68 to triumph at 13-under-par 275 at Sentosa Golf Club on Sunday as Japan’s Ayaka Furue (68) and Thailand’s world No.2 Jeeno Thitikul (70) tied for second. The 2024 Olympic gold medallist and Women’s British Open champion overcame a middling start before finding her rhythm with a birdie on the par-5 sixth. A former teen prodigy who claimed the world No.1 ranking at age 17, Ko added back-to-back birdies on Nos. 7 and 8, seizing control of the leaderboard from then on as she secured her 23rd LPGA Tour title. “I dreamt last night that I won but then I woke up, and I was like, dang, it’s not real yet,” said Ko. “But I just wanted to focus on my game.” “I started off really steady, and you know, didn’t really put myself in trouble that much. I think that was going to be the key for today.” Australia’s defending champion Hannah Green had to settle for a share of seventh place as her closing 71 left her seven shots adrift of Ko. Minjee Lee (73) was a shot further back while fellow Aussie Steph Kyriacou tied for 48th after a 72. Ko’s previous best finish in 11 appearances in the tournament was a second placing in 2015. “It’s exciting to finally add Asia’s major to my major collection,” she said. Charley Hull, just one shot behind Ko entering the final round, saw her title hopes fade after a frustrating 74, settling for a share of fourth at seven under alongside Im Jin Hee, who fired the day’s best round of 67, and Gaby Lopez (70). The Singapore tournament is the second of three events on the LPGA’s first Asian swing of the year. The final event will be played next week at Hainan Island, China. Rep. Jeffries warns Americans will be ‘devastated’ after House Republicans advance ‘largest Medicaid cut’ Rep. Jeffries warns Americans will be ‘devastated’ after House Republicans advance ‘largest Medicaid cut’ House ********* Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., warned Friday that children, families, seniors and everyday Americans with disabilities will be “devastated” after House Republicans this week “passed the budget resolution that sets in motion the largest Medicaid cut in American history.” “Children will be devastated in the city of New York and beyond. Families will be devastated. Seniors will be devastated. Everyday Americans with disabilities will be devastated,” the New York Democrat said. “Hospitals will potentially close here in New York state, in rural America and across the country. And nursing homes will certainly be shut down. “Every single House Democrat from New York City, from New York State and across the country oppose this reckless Republican budget, and we will continue to do so as long as the health care of the American people is being targeted, as long as nutritional assistance for children and families is being targeted by the extreme MAGA Republicans,” Jeffries added. Jeffries spoke Friday as Republicans in Congress searching for a way around the $880 billion budget shortfall needed to be covered in order to extend President Donald Trump’s tax cuts are considering changing the way Medicaid is funded, according to Politico. Trump Budget Bill Extending First-term Tax Cuts Survives House Vote As it stands, states must contribute their own matching funds to qualify for federal Medicaid dollars, but Republicans are weighing whether to prevent states from taxing insurers and healthcare providers as a way to raise that cash, a Politico report said Wednesday. Doing so would leave states with a $612 billion hole in their budgets over the next 10 years, the report said. Read On The Fox News App GOP leaders argue that states are inflating Medicaid costs because they are kicking back the taxes to those sources through higher payment rates, the report added. “States and providers scheme so that the provider gets an enormous flow of federal dollars with no state cost exposure,” Brian Blase of the Paragon Health Institute think-tank told the outlet. Medicaid Becomes Flashpoint In House Debate Over Trump Budget Bill Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., left, is advancing a reconciliation bill aimed at President Donald Trump’s priorities through the House of Representatives. However, the American Hospital Association is calling on Congress to “reject changes to states’ use of provider taxes, which help fund their Medicaid programs,” as “[e]ven small adjustments in the use of this financing source would result in negative consequences for Medicaid beneficiaries as well as the broader health care system.” “States’ approaches to financing their share of the program are subject to federal rules and oversight, including limits on the amount of revenue that states can generate through provider taxes. Congress is contemplating further restrictions on states’ ability to finance their share of Medicaid spending through such taxes,” it said earlier this month. “Most states would be unable to close the financing gap created by further limiting states’ ability to tax providers,” it warned. “States would need to make significant cuts to Medicaid to balance their budgets, including reducing eligibility, eliminating or limiting benefits, and reducing already low payment rates for providers.” “States can use various sources to finance the non-federal share and would look to other sources if Congress limited their ability to use provider taxes,” it also said. “This means that some states would have to consider increasing other forms of taxes, including income and sales tax, levied on all state residents.” Original article source: Rep. Germany needs military service to deter Russia, top general insists Germany needs military service to deter Russia, top general insists Germany requires a new form of military service to meet its growing defence needs, a leading general has said. Harald Gante, a top lieutenant general in the ******* Army, told dpa in comments released on Sunday that the country’s armed forces – known collectively as the Bundeswehr – cannot rely solely on volunteers to fulfil their list of tasks. “All the additional tasks that we have to deal with today in the area of homeland security, and national and alliance defence, will not work without significantly more personnel – and that can only be done with conscripts,” he said. Germany must be ready to deter Russia, argued Gante. “There should be no false illusions. If the Russian Federation has the possibility and the impression that it can restore its old Soviet empire with its spheres of influence, I am convinced they would try it,” he said. “And there is exactly one way to stop them, and that is credible deterrence,” Gante added. The Bundeswehr is eagerly awaiting the next ******* government’s decisions on whether to reintroduce military service, which was suspended in Germany in 2011. This year, the army is expected to train 2,500 additional troops, but Gante argued that further investment is needed to bolster military infrastructure. “The problem is not the trainers we have today, but the problem is the infrastructure,” he said. “If I have no barracks, no beds, no company buildings in which to house the soldiers, then I cannot recruit them in the first place,” said the lieutenant general.
