  2. Super Rugby Pacific: Western Force’s Simon Cron and Nic White admit they let game slip against Queensland Reds Super Rugby Pacific: Western Force’s Simon Cron and Nic White admit they let game slip against Queensland Reds Western Force coach Simon Cron and vice-captain Nic White say changing expectations mean their last-minute defeat to Queensland Reds will sting even more after twice letting the lead slip. The Force were 40 seconds away from their first-ever 3-0 start to a Super Rugby season, only for a Filipo Daugunu try to steal a 28-24 win for the visitors at HBF Park. It was a match the Force felt as if they lost, rather than the Reds won, and the stats backed up that belief; the ball spent almost 50 per cent of the game in Force hands inside their opponents’ half. But questionable decision-making in the 22 and an inability to translate territory into scoreboard pressure left the door ajar. A week after the Force held onto the ball late and ground out a win against the Brumbies, they kicked the ball away with less than four minutes to go, allowing the Reds to complete their heist. For Cron, the silver lining of the loss, outside of the bonus point they picked up for losing by less than seven, was the pain etched onto his players’ faces. “Our expectations of each other and our environment are pretty high,” he said. Camera IconNic Dolly consults with Sam Carter and Marley Pearce. Credit: Janelle St Pierre/Getty Images “This one hurts and you can see it in the faces of the players out there on the field, it really hurts them that we’ve let that one go. “That’s what I’m happy about — it hurts them so that they will get up and go again and learn from it and we’ll get better as a team as well.” The usually-chipper White was crestfallen after the game and said while they would not dwell on defeat, they knew they had missed a huge opportunity. “To be honest, it’s pretty hard to get past the disappointment of we were in a really good position to win that game,” he said. “A big one for me is we created a lot of opportunities, got really close to the line, and just weren’t able to capitalize. “You drop ******, get held up over the line, things that we can control and get better at, but we’ve just got to be calmer down there, and when we get that close, we’ve got to come away with points. “That was there for us; I really feel like that was a game we lost. They didn’t necessarily come and take it from us, I feel like we were in control for a lot of that game and we coughed it up.” Camera IconTate McDermott praised the Force after the game. Credit: Janelle St Pierre/Getty Images Reds coach Les Kiss felt while it was far from a perfect performance from his side, he put it down to the Force’s ability to constrict them, while Queensland captain Tate McDermott said Perth was going to continue to be a tough place for visiting teams to win. “We came over here last year and got blown off the park and the Force came at us hard early, two quick tries,” he said. “The Force are going to be there at the pointy end, the way they’re playing. “They put us under immense pressure, particularly at the breakdown. They made us earn that.” Source link #Super #Rugby #Pacific #Western #Forces #Simon #Cron #Nic #White #admit #game #slip #Queensland #Reds Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  3. Jimmy Butler left luxury rental in Miami Beach in ‘complete disrepair,’ lawsuit says Jimmy Butler left luxury rental in Miami Beach in ‘complete disrepair,’ lawsuit says Jimmy Butler may be a great basketball player, but he’s a very bad tenant. That’s according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday in Miami-Dade County. The former Heat forward is accused of leaving a $130,000 a month rental in Miami Beach in “complete disrepair.” The suit, filed by Five Star Marketing and Promotions, claims Butler also didn’t pay two months’ rent after his lease expired at the 5,398 square foot single family home, the Sunny Isles based company says. The coffee entrepreneur, 35, initially signed the lease Aug. 10, 2022. In his two years at the five bedroom, six bathroom mansion. Five Star says he rarely did proper upkeep or allowed maintenance folks to check on the place. As per legal documents, when workers came to look at the HVAC system, Butler’s chief of staff denied them access. The air conditioning unit’s condensation lines ended up blocked, and created a “significant” leak in the ceiling and hardwood floors, which both had to be removed and replaced. Aerial view of the Miami Beach property that Heat star Jimmy Butler rented from 2022-2024. He is now being sued for leaving the property in ‘complete disrepair.’ Among the other lease violations: Butler hired his own pool-cleaning people, who neglected their duties, and algae formed and the pumps broke, as per the suit. The five-time NBA All-Star also changed the locks without providing the landlord with a key. The cost of all damages, including mold remediation and new drywall, was $127,282. In total, Five Star wants $257,282 — two months’ back rent, minus the $130,000 security deposit. According to the Miami-Dade County Property Appraiser, the property, which was built in 2016, last sold in 2021 for $7,300,000. Zillow estimates the current value to be close to $12 million. Insiders tell Miami.com that Butler moved to another rental, a $30 million Mediterranean estate on Hibiscus Island, after eventually moving out of the Miami Beach mansion. He was reportedly paying $70k a month for that rental. Butler also cashed out of a home he owned in South Miami, which he sold last summer for $8.3 million, The Real Deal reports. Butler is no longer a 305 resident. In February, he was traded to the Golden State Warriors, a few weeks after saying he was no longer happy with the team and two suspensions. 5. Jillaroos’ 90-4 win in Vegas raises questions for NRL Jillaroos’ 90-4 win in Vegas raises questions for NRL The NRL will be forced to reconsider the best way to promote the women’s game in the US, after the Jillaroos trounced England 90-4 in Las Vegas. In Australia’s third-biggest win of all time, Tamika Upton scored five tries and set another up two in a complete domination at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday (AEDT). Winger Julia Robinson and bench centre Jess Sergis also crossed for hat-tricks for Australia, while Taryn Aiken was superb at halfback with six assists. So dominant were the Jillaroos that they ran in 17 tries in the 70-minute fixture to claim their largest victory margin over a tier-one nation. Make that FIVE tries for Tamika Upton! #NRLVegas pic.twitter.com/dHen3n3p9b— Jillaroos (@AusJillaroos) March 2, 2025 The win was briefly marred by a horror head-on collision from the first tackle after the break, leaving England prop Vicky Whitfield prone on the ground. After taking the hit up from the kick off, Whitfield clashed heads with Jillaroos front-rower Sarah Togatuki and both reeled from the collision. Togatuki was taken for the field with a concussion, while Whitfield was eventually taken off on a stretcher on the back of a medicab. The 30-year-old was taken to hospital for precautionary scans. Still, the main question for the NRL is whether the Jillaroos’ walloping of England is the best advertisement for the women’s game in the US market. With no fully-professional women’s rugby or NFL competition in America, the NRLW is viewed as a space where rugby league can make an impact. But Australia’s win was overwhelmingly one-sided. England conceded tries in four straight sets at different stages in both halves, and scored their only points on the full-time siren through Georgia Roache. By contrast, Pacific Championship matches between Australia and New Zealand have been far more competitive in recent years, leaving the Kiwi Ferns as a potentially better opponent for the Jillaroos next year. Women’s State of Origin is also viewed as a potential way to sell the game in the US, with last year’s three-game series a compelling contest. Regardless, Australia were ruthless against the Lionesses. Upton was in everything, putting Jakiya Whitfeld into a gap in the lead up to the Jillaroos’ first try before scoring three more herself in the opening half. Isabelle Kelly was dominant at left centre, scoring twice and laying on a nice try for Upton when she swept out wide and passed back inside for her fullback. Prop Shannon Mato ran close to 200 metres, while Olivia Kernick laid on two tries in the second row in her first Jillaroos game since her controversial axing last year. 11. New York Times recipe: strawberry and sesame swirl soft serve New York Times recipe: strawberry and sesame swirl soft serve When a balmy evening inspires an ice-cream craving, it’s time for a 60-second soft serve. Unlike regular ice-cream, which requires some combination of muscle, machinery and time, this soft serve whips frozen fruit and a little dairy into a dessert that can — and must — be eaten instantly. It’s light and lux with fruit as the star. It starts with the kind of fruit that’s fragrant enough to withstand freezing. Peaches, figs, mangoes and bananas should be ripened to the extreme, cut into blitzable chunks and frozen at home. Strawberries, cherries and blueberries are great purchased frozen and guarantee you’re always ready, just in case. ******* things, like Greek yogurt, creme fraiche and heavy cream, give the dessert its mouthfeel. Use no more than one part to every three parts fruit. Heavy cream helps weak blenders whip rock-solid fruit, though too much turns the soft serve sloppy. As cravings are by their very nature unplanned, use whatever you have — even if it means ricotta or refrozen icy ice-cream. Adding sugar is contentious. But even the sweetest peach needs a little bit to become soft serve. Start with a teaspoon of powdered sugar for every cup of fruit, and add more to taste. Bananas don’t need much more than this, while berries and cherries routinely take at least 2 teaspoons per cup. If you’ve incorporated sour cream or creme fraiche, add more. If you’re planning to mix in other sweet things, hold back. Slight tartness distinguishes these from store-bought pints. Dark chocolate chunks, halvah, candied ginger, nuts and cookies can be added to the almost-finished ice-cream, and a few pulses of the blender will crush and mix them in. Jams, citrus curds and nut butters ripple through with just one pulse. Pile it high in chilled glasses, which you can hold in the freezer while you whip cream to go on top. It can stay there for up to 30 minutes before losing its freshly churned allure. But do rush: at room temperature, it’ll go from soft to soupy in 10 minutes. Like all of summer’s ephemera, it should be inhaled while it lasts. Recipe: Strawberry and Sesame Swirl Soft Serve 2 cups frozen strawberries (about 280g) ½ cup full-**** Greek yogurt or labneh 2 tbsp heavy cream 2 tbsp tahini 4 tsp powdered sugar ¼ cup sesame halvah (about 50g), plus more for garnish Step 1 Place the strawberries, yogurt, cream, tahini and sugar in a blender or food processor, and blitz, scraping down the sides as needed, until smooth. Step 2 Crumble the halvah on top and stir through to distribute. Serve in chilled glasses with more halvah crumbled on top. Eat quickly. 24. ‘Remember the effect on people’ ‘Remember the effect on people’ Winters aren’t what they used to be in southwestern Ontario. Scientists say the season is shrinking on our overheating planet. It’s a trend that is also being seen in the United States. What’s happening? According to a new report, winters are warming up in Canada. Climate Central, a nonprofit organization made up of scientists and journalists who analyze climate data and issue reports on their findings, released an analysis of 289 regions in Canada that explored how winter has changed over the past decade. They found that nearly 20% of the regions, 58 out of 289, have gained at least one additional week of winter days above freezing each year. Rising winter temperatures are raising the risk of ice storms. “As the temperature pushes up closer to zero, but not quite above it, you can have more intense, high-risk freezing rain events,” climate scientist Gordon McBean told The London Free Press. Ice storms can take a toll on Canada’s economy and put its citizens in danger. A severe ice storm that hit the eastern part of the country in January of 1998 left millions in the dark without power for several days and took the lives of at least 28 people. “When we talk about the losses from storms, we usually quote the insured losses, how much the insurance companies paid out. But it’s very important to remember the effect on people, their health and mental health,” McBean added. Watch now: Survivors of extreme weather events discuss their fears for their childrenWhy are warmer winters important? Other studies on winter from Climate Central found it was the fastest-warming of all seasons, and as the planet overheats, the effects are also being felt in the United States. An analysis of 235 locations in the U.S. revealed that their winters warmed from 1970 to 2024 by an average of 4 degrees. Warming winters can reduce mountain snowpack, a vital source of spring meltwater that several states rely on to refill reservoirs and help meet the rising demand for water during hot summers. Researchers in the United Kingdom have linked our warming world to an increasing chance of summer droughts in the Northern Hemisphere. Warmer and shorter winters also raise health risks from pests like mosquitoes. Earlier spring thaws and later fall freezes lengthen the growing season for plants that release allergy-inducing pollen earlier in spring and later into fall, thereby extending the allergy season. The tourism industry that relies on snow to support winter sports and recreation is also taking an economic hit. A popular tourist spot in Switzerland had to close recently because of a lack of snowfall. What’s being done about warming winters? Cooling off our warming world will mean a massive shift from dirty energy sources to cleaner, renewable options. On an individual basis, this could include installing solar panels and heat pumps in our homes. We can also fight for our planet’s future by advocating for changes at work and talking to friends and family about climate issues.
