  1. Top 3 Ways We Can Beat the Most Broken Marvel Rivals Character After Its Creator Mocks Us Top 3 Ways We Can Beat the Most Broken Marvel Rivals Character After Its Creator Mocks Us Marvel Rivals has quickly become one of the most popular hero shooters of 2025 and it is a very deserved success. NetEase Games has found the winning formula and we’ve enjoyed the execution of the Marvel IP and the hero shooter aspect of the game. But that’s not to say that there are no problems. He’s the cutest character in the game but also one of the most toxic. | Image Credit: NetEase Games Jeff the Land Shark might be Marvel Rivals‘ most adorable character, but he’s also one of its most hated. His ultimate allows him to ******** multiple enemies and ***** them out wherever he pleases, though we often see it used to throw enemies off the map. The community has been vocal about their frustrations, but his co-creator, Kelly Thompson, calls it a “skills issue.” Jeff the Land Shark’s co-creator says we need to git gud After all, he’s just a cute little shark….right? | Image Credit: NetEase Games Jeff’s ultimate ability is arguably one of the most tilting ones in Marvel Rivals. It’s massive range allows him to gobble up multiple enemies at once. And if you get caught you’re just at Jeff’s mercy since he can ***** you out into his team. Or worse, straight off the map. The worst part is that no matter how you look at it, it requires little skill and can completely change the tide of a teamfight. “Sounds like a skills issue” Jeff the Shark co-creator says Marvel Rivals players “should get better at the game” if “my boy is beating your **** every night” Via @Newsarama pic.twitter.com/qSq7l21UgH — Marvel Rivals Intel (@RivalsAssembled) March 2, 2025 Why Marvel Rivals players love and hate Jeff the landshark in one video pic.twitter.com/dJ3cuI5AF1 — Meko (@NekomekoPlays) December 10, 2024 Jeff’s rise to infamy in Marvel Rivals has caught the attention of Kelly Thompson, who originally introduced him in the 2018 West Coast Avengers run. Speaking to Polygon about the little menace, Thompson jokingly dismissed concerns, saying, “I think they should get better at the game. Sounds like a skills issue to me, if my boy is beating your **** every night.“ NetEase acknowledges the complaints but hasn’t provided a direct fix. Instead, Marvel Rivals’ game director Guangyun Chen has offered a simple (and rather unsatisfying) tip: run away. According to Chen, as soon as Jeff starts his “Nom Nom Nom” voice line, players should scatter and use their mobility skills to escape. Marvel Rivals isn’t going anywhere, and neither is Jeff Se we better just get good. | Image Credit: NetEase Games Despite the controversy, Jeff remains one of the most popular characters in Marvel Rivals. The game itself has seen massive success, with NetEase reporting over 20 million downloads and an estimated $136 million in revenue within its first month. Going up against the cute shark isn’t all bad though. If you really want to counter him, there are a few ways. We’re not getting an official change to this obnoxious little fella, but that’s alright. Because players have taken matters into their own hands and have found different strategies to deal with Jeff’s ultimate. A Reddit user recently compiled various hero-specific counters that can stop Jeff’s ult from swallowing you. For example, Hulk’s barrier can completely block the part of his ult that swallows you. Groot can also use his bark wall to shield himself and teammates, though the exact area of protection is probably tiny. Other players have suggested focusing their attacks on Jeff as soon as he uses his ultimate since dealing enough damage can force him to release targets early. Love him or hate him, Jeff is here to stay, and the best way to deal with him might just be to get better. 2. Semiconductors Fail a Key Support Level Semiconductors Fail a Key Support Level It has been 2 years and 2 months since the ETF for Semiconductors has traded below the 50-week moving average. The momentum, as seen through the lens of Real Motion, continues to sit in a bearish divergence to price. The red dots are below the 200-WMA while price remains well above. The Leadership flipped to favor the last July. To date, that remains the case. So why are analysts once again telling folks to buy the dip? Why do so many see this as a buyable dip? And why is it so urgent in a sea of uncertainty to buy anything in this sector right now? Here is where price should dictate the narrative. Looking at the rest of the Economic Modern Family… Earlier last week, I wrote about the consumer sector flashing a warning. Granny Retail (as she is called) not only broke down under the 50-week moving average, but also the 200-WMA. This is a distribution phase which means cash is leaving the consumer sector. Granddad () also broke down from the 50-WMA. While doing a bit better than the consumer, through the years of tracking the Family, when one major member throws in the towel, eventually we could see spillover everywhere. Naturally Biotechnology fell with the overall market. However, a move back over the 200-WMA could present as an opportunity in that sector. Interestingly though, Transportation is holding up. Regional are also outperforming. This is encouraging in that we can see that financials and transportation could be telling us that the consumer is nervous, but the economy may not go the way of recession anytime soon. Last week, I also noted the anomaly of junk bonds, while underperforming the long bonds, were still looking quite bullish, a good sign. Meanwhile, Semiconductors have been a growth sector for over a decade. But with talk of tariffs that could also be resolved, it is possible that this painful move lower across the board, is temporary. Maybe it will be the Fed pivot in March (as I have predicted since December 2024) that helps. We imagine the consumer would sigh relief if interest rates were lowered. That could in turn, goose inflation. But one wall of worry at a time. Regardless, let’s let price dictate that narrative. Check out the podcast I did with Chris Cabot (NYSE:) from Cabot Street Check-we cover the MAG7 selloff and what to look for to stay one step ahead in the markets. I come in minute 29 This is the monthly chart of Retail XRT. Zooming out is a great way to gain an even better perspective. The blue line is the 23-month moving average, and the green line is the 80-month moving average. I made a big deal when XRT held the 80-month MA throughout 2022 and 2023 when the going looked bleak. I made a big deal when XRT cleared the 23-month MA in December 2023, as it went from teetering on recession, to entering a 2-year business cycle expansion. And now, I am making a big deal that XRT remains above that key 23-month moving average. So, while the weekly chart looks iffy, the evidence of the other Modern Family sectors holding, the junk bonds holding, the monthly charts still intact and, the green close on Friday, I am still not preaching doom and gloom. Denver man fears for safety as dozens show up at his house seeking PS5s in online scam Denver man fears for safety as dozens show up at his house seeking PS5s in online scam DENVER (KDVR) — It started off innocently enough — it could’ve been an honest mistake. But after dozens of people have now shown up at his house unannounced, a Denver man says a scam that he’s an unintended victim of is starting to get scary. We’ve kept his identity anonymous out of his concerns for safety. “This started about six months ago when I moved into the house,” he said. At first, he didn’t think anything of it. A stranger showed up at the door of his new house in Green Valley Ranch asking about a PlayStation 5. He said that person went away without incident. But they weren’t the last. “Probably about, like, 30 times,” he said. Thirty more incidents, a few he’s been able to capture on camera. He said that his home was vacant before he moved in, and believes a scammer was telling people the address after taking their money online. Not every interaction has been friendly. “Sometimes they come very aggressive,” he said. And he’s getting scared to leave his wife and child home while he’s at work. “I don’t feel safe leaving them alone at the house sometimes knowing that there’s people, random people coming to the house constantly,” he said. He’s contacted police about the situation and hopes they’re able to help, but in the meantime, he’s asking people to think before making a purchase online. 8. France’s Macron is ready to discuss nuclear deterrence for Europe France’s Macron is ready to discuss nuclear deterrence for Europe PARIS (Reuters) – French President Emmanuel Macron has said he is ready to start discussions on nuclear deterrence for Europe, hinting France could help to protect other EU countries, given the security threats posed by Russia. European leaders will meet in London on Sunday to discuss a peace plan for Ukraine and they will attend a European Union summit on Thursday. The bloc is grappling with U.S. President Donald Trump’s willingness to embrace Russian diplomacy and the implications of an extraordinary clash between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Trump at the White House on Friday. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. Macron told Portuguese TV RTP in an interview he posted on X on Saturday that if Europe wanted to move towards “greater autonomy” in matters of defence and nuclear deterrence, then its leaders should start a discussion about it. “I am available to open this discussion…if it allows to build a European force,” he said. “There has always been a European dimension to France’s vital interests within its nuclear doctrine.” French far-right leader Marine Le Pen was swift to react to Macron’s comments. “The French nuclear deterrent must remain a French nuclear deterrent,” she said as she visited the Farm Show in Paris on Saturday. “It must not be shared, let alone delegated.” Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu reiterated Macron’s stance that France’s vital interests include a “European dimension”, but also that it was under the exclusive control of the French head of state. “Our nuclear deterrent is French, and it will remain so: from the design and production of our weapons, to their implementation by decision of the President of the Republic,” he said on X. “It protects the vital interests of France, which the head of state alone can define.” (Reporting by Dominique Vidalon; editing by Barbara Lewis) Source link #Frances #Macron #ready #discuss #nuclear #deterrence #Europe Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  9. *** unions call for action to protect creative industry workers as AI develops | Artificial intelligence (AI) *** unions call for action to protect creative industry workers as AI develops | Artificial intelligence (AI) Action is needed to protect workers in creative industries amid huge changes in technology and artificial intelligence, unions have urged. The TUC said there was an urgent need to put in place “proper guardrails” for workers ranging from artists, writers and journalists to teachers and academics. The union organisation said government proposals for copyright and an AI framework, which are under consultation, needed to go further to protect creative workers. The TUC called for transparency of AI training data to ensure workers know whether their data or image are being used, an opt-in system to protect creative work from commercial data mining unless workers give their permission and consent, and for measures to ensure creative workers are paid fairly for their work when their creative work is used to train AI models. The report also called for an independent regulator to oversee the integration of AI into society and work. The transformative potential of AI was huge, but without adequate regulation, “rapacious tech bosses” would be able to exploit creative workers and cash in on their work, the TUC warned. Its general secretary, Paul Nowak, said: “AI has huge transformative potential – and if regulated properly, workers could benefit from the productivity gains created by this technology. “*** law is simply failing to keep pace with the rapid speed of technological change and proliferation of AI at work. “Writers, actors, performers, teachers, journalists and other creatives must have a say over how their work and image is used, and they must be paid fairly. “A new taskforce should be established, bringing together creative workers, unions, technologists and government to manage the risks and maximise the opportunities of AI. “The government should change direction on current proposals and go further to protect creative workers and safeguard the future of the creative industries. The sector is a jewel in the crown of our economy and vital for growth. “The clock is ticking. Without proper guardrails put in place, rapacious tech bosses will continue to cash in on creatives’ work without their consent.” Paul Fleming, the Equity union’s general secretary, said: “The industrial-scale theft of performers’ and artists’ work by big tech must stop. “Equity’s groundbreaking TV and film negotiations show that empowering workers can help deal with the challenges of AI. “The government’s proposals undermine an entire industry – bosses and workers alike – and threaten the efficacy of bargained solutions through unquestioning support of big tech. “The government should embrace this AI manifesto in place of their misguided proposals and recognise that it is people who make our creative industries successful.” Emma Reeves, the chair of the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain, said: “Writers’ work is already being stolen on an industrial scale to train AI systems, without permission or payment – infringing 300-year-old copyright protections. “Without stronger protections for writers, big tech could be allowed to take what they like, when they like, without any requirement to share the profits with writers or other creators. “This will not only harm creators themselves, but will likely deal a serious blow to the emerging AI market and harm the creative industries too. Alternatively, the voluntary licensing of work for AI training offers a potential for growth.” Peter Kyle, the secretary of state for science, innovation, and technology, said: “Securing Britain’s future as an AI leader and safeguarding the rights and rewards of people at work must go hand in hand as we navigate the complex and challenging technological revolution facing us all. “Our consultation into AI and copyright closed this week and we are now considering the full range of the thousands of responses we have received. “Let me be absolutely clear – no changes will be considered unless I am completely satisfied that we are delivering a solution which works for creators. That is my firm red line.” Source link #unions #call #action #protect #creative #industry #workers #develops #Artificial #intelligence Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  10. Europe looks to broker peace for Ukraine after the White House fiasco Europe looks to broker peace for Ukraine after the White House fiasco European leaders pose for a family photograph at Lancaster House during the European leaders’ summit on March 2, 2025 in London, England. Wpa Pool | Getty Images News | Getty Images European allies put forward their own peacekeeping plans for Ukraine at the weekend, as well as attempting to position the region as a mediator between Kyiv and the White House after the blistering public attack on Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Oval Office last Friday. European leaders met in London on Sunday for a hastily convened summit that aimed to show a united front regarding Ukraine, and to present proposals aiming to keep Europe relevant to, and in the middle of, any future peace talks. Europe has been largely sidelined in such discussions in recent weeks, amid a rapprochement between Russia and the U.S. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said after the gathering on Sunday that a “number” of allies had signed up to a “coalition of the willing” that was ready to commit peacekeeping troops to Ukraine in the event of a peace deal. The U.K. insisted that the plan would be presented to the U.S. and that European allies would work to get Washington’s support for its proposals, which it said offered Ukraine much-coveted security guarantees. “Through my discussions over recent days, we’ve agreed that the U.K., France and others will work with Ukraine on a plan to stop the fighting. Then we’ll discuss that plan with the United States and take it forward together,” Starmer told the BBC on Sunday. Several media reports suggested that Starmer and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron had promoted the idea of an initial one-month truce between Ukraine and Russia to test if Russia was committed to any future peace deal. CNBC has contacted Downing Street and the Elysee Palace for comment. Europe has been scrambling to assert its role in future peacemaking, after U.S. and Russian officials began talks two weeks ago, which they said were aimed at laying the groundwork for discussions to end the war. Meanwhile, tensions between Washington and Kyiv have risen to a boiling point, culminating in a spectacular public dressing-down of Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy last Friday by U.S. officials, including President Donald Trump and VP JD Vance. Amid heated remarks, the U.S. politicians accused Kyiv’s leadership of being ungrateful for U.S. aid and of “gambling with World War III,” which Zelenskyy denied. Wait-and-see mode Analysts say there is currently little detail on Europe’s proposals to achieve a lasting peace in Ukraine and scant understanding of which countries would be involved in such efforts. Russia has refused to countenance the idea of European troops on Ukrainian soil, while the U.S. insists that no American troops would be deployed to the country as peacekeepers. Gesine Weber, fellow at the ******* Marshall Fund, told CNBC on Monday that the latest summit showed Europeans now really see the need to take the lead on support for Ukraine, “especially as tensions between the U.S. and Ukraine could not be higher.” “We’re now basically in a wait-and-see position as to what extent Washington can be brought on board with this plan that they’re presented with,” she told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe.” European allies have struggled to reach a general consensus on military aid for Ukraine during its three-year war with Russia, as well as what its future role might be in the country once the conflict has ended, given the continent’s broader security needs. Ukraine is currently part of neither the NATO military alliance, nor the European Union. European allies have recently repeatedly discussed need to increase defense spending, aiming to signal to Trump that they — and NATO — are worth persevering with after persistent criticism from the U.S. that continental allies are over-reliant on the States for protection. The U.S. and Russia have not yet publicly reacted to the latest meeting of European allies, although Trump posted on Truth Social on Sunday that “we should spend less time worrying about Putin” and more time concerned about crime, “so that we don’t end up like Europe.” U.S. President Donald Trump attends a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg ahead of the NATO summit in Watford, in London, Britain, December 3, 2019. Kevin Lamarque | Reuters Without U.S. support or Russia’s acquiescence, analysts say Europe could find its peacekeeping proposals falling flat very quickly. “After the London summit on Ukraine, the concrete outcomes are limited. Apart from new air defense missiles and financial aid … Starmer announced a follow-up meeting. The next task will be to substantiate, beyond the U.K. and France, the ‘coalition of the willing’ of countries ready to deploy troops to Ukraine,” Carsten Nickel, deputy director of research at risk consultancy Teneo, said in a note on Sunday. Success will depend primarily on the U.S. and Russia, Nickel added, noting a key question to watch is whether European troops in Ukraine and any potential U.S. security backstop motivate Russia to reject peace talks. “In turn, this creates risks regarding the US administration’s stance, given President Donald Trump’s desire for a quick ceasefire. The European plea for involvement potentially complicates the equation between Russia and the U.S. It contrasts with Trump’s position that a minerals extraction deal would be sufficient to prevent Russia from launching a renewed invasion,” Nickel said. 11. *** watchdog to investigate TikTok and Reddit over use of children’s data | Information commissioner *** watchdog to investigate TikTok and Reddit over use of children’s data | Information commissioner TikTok is to be investigated by the ***’s data protection watchdog, which is looking into whether social media algorithms are serving up inappropriate or harmful content to children. Growing concerns over how social media platforms are using data generated by children’s online activity have prompted the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) to launch an investigation into the ******** platform, along with the forum site Reddit and the image-sharing site Imgur. It will look at how TikTok uses the personal information of 13- to 17-year-olds to deliver content recommendations to them, and also examine Reddit and Imgur’s use of age assurance measures, such as how they estimate or verify a child’s age, which can then be used to tailor their experience on the platform. Earlier this year TikTok was made subject to a ban in the US, suspended for 45 days by Donald Trump, due to concerns that the ******** government could access data gathered by the app, which is owned by the ******** social media and games company ByteDance. In January the *** technology minister, Peter Kyle, told the Guardian: “I am genuinely concerned about the ownership model of TikTok. I’m genuinely concerned about their use of data, linked to the ownership model.” The ICO introduced a children’s code for online privacy in 2021, which requires companies to take steps to protect children’s personal information online. The information commissioner, John Edwards, told the PA news agency that the regulator expected to find plenty of positive safety elements in place across the sites during its investigation, but wanted to ensure their processes were robust. “It’s what they’re collecting, it’s how they work,” he told PA. “I will expect to find that there will be many benign and positive uses of children’s data in their recommender systems. I would expect to find there will be elements that are designed to keep children safe and to make sure they only get appropriate things, and that’s all for the good. “What I am concerned about is whether they are sufficiently robust to prevent children being exposed to harm, either from addictive practices on the device or the platform, or from content that they see, or from other unhealthy practices.” The ICO said its investigations would look into whether there had been any infringements of data protection legislation. If any evidence of potential breaches is found, the regulator said it would put it to the platforms and obtain their representations before reaching a final conclusion. Edwards said the regulator was “not picking on TikTok” by making it the subject of an investigation on a topic common across social media, and hoped to understand more about the wider social media landscape through the investigation. skip past newsletter promotion A weekly dive in to how technology is shaping our lives Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. 15. Crypto prices rally after Trump backs five coins for ‘crypto reserve’ Crypto prices rally after Trump backs five coins for ‘crypto reserve’ US President Donald Trump has revealed the names of five cryptocurrencies that he says he’d like to be included in a new strategic reserve to make the US “the Crypto Capital of the World”. The market prices of the five coins he named – Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana and Cardano – all swiftly jumped after the announcement. During Trump’s presidential campaign, he aggressively courted the crypto community. The previous US president, Joe Biden, had overseen a crackdown on crypto due to concerns about fraud and money laundering. It is unclear how the new stockpile will work. More information is expected on Friday, when Trump plans to host the first Crypto Summit at the White House. In a social media post on Sunday, Trump said he had signed an order which “directed the Presidential Working Group to move forward on a Crypto Strategic Reserve that includes XRP, SOL, and ADA”. About an hour later he added in another post: “And, obviously, BTC and ETH, as other valuable Cryptocurrencies, will be at the heart of the Reserve.” The first three coins he named jumped by up to 62% on Sunday. Bitcoin and Ethereum also jumped by more than 10% each. The posts marked a new upward turn for crypto prices, which had dropped sharply since spiking after his election. Shortly after taking office in January, Trump signed an executive to create a presidential working group tasked with proposing new crypto laws and regulations. The order called on the group to “evaluate the potential creation and maintenance of a national digital asset stockpile” that could use “cryptocurrencies lawfully seized by the Federal Government through its law enforcement efforts”. It is unclear whether creating a new national strategic stockpile would require an act of Congress. Trump had previously been a crypto critic, telling Fox News in 2021 that Bitcoin is a “scam”. But in recent weeks, both he and his wife Melania Trump have launched their own cryptocurrencies, leading to accusations that they are trying to profit from his White House policies. Infinix Unveils E-Color Shift 2.0, SolarEnergy-Reserving Technology at MWC 2025 Infinix Unveils E-Color Shift 2.0, SolarEnergy-Reserving Technology at MWC 2025 Infinix Note 50 series will be launched in Indonesia today. The lineup will succeed the Infinix Note 40 handsets, which were unveiled in March 2024. Meanwhile, the company has introduced E-Color Shift 2.0 and SolarEnergy-Reserving Technology at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025. The latter is said to use ambient light to extend battery life. Infinix first showcased its E-Color Shift technology at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024. The E-Color Shift 2.0 comes with AI-backed customisation support. Infinix Unveils E-Color Shift 2.0, SolarEnergy-Reserving Technology The E-Color Shift 2.0 continues to enable the phone’s back panel to change and reflect vibrant colours without draining power. Infinix explains that the latest iteration of the technology allows AI-backed customisations “based on selected preferences and external stimuli.” According to the company, users can choose from six dynamic patterns and six colour palettes, with the possibility to get up to 30 unique combinations. Using “AI-powered modules,” the back panel of a supported handset can change colours “based on factors like weather, wallpapers, and surroundings.” The E-Color Shift 2.0 is claimed to offer improved colour depth and segmentation. With SolarEnergy-Reserving Technology, Infinix claims to offer a sustainable and efficient way to extend battery life. It combines “advanced perovskite photovoltaic technology with intelligent AI algorithms,” to harness and optimise light energy for more efficient charging in different environments. The company says that the SolarEnergy-Reserving Technology converts indoor and outdoor light into electricity that is stored in a prototype phone case. The case then transfers power to the handset through “discreet contact points” and AI-backed algorithms that are said to “fine-tune power acquisition in real-time,” allowing energy storage of up to 2W. The company added that the energy storage capacity can be improved in the future. This “Sunflower” Wireless Charging is inspired by heliotropic plants and dynamically adjusts to indoor lighting conditions, the company claimed. The technology could be used in future wearables and digital devices for more sustainable power solutions. 21. Dozens found alive in metal containers after India avalanche Dozens found alive in metal containers after India avalanche Dozens of construction workers have been pulled out alive from metal containers after they were buried by a snow avalanche in Uttarakhand, India. They survived as the containers, which the workers were living in, had enough oxygen to sustain them until rescuers could dig them out, Indian media reported quoting officials. On Friday, 54 workers were buried when the avalanche hit a construction camp near Mana village. Eight were killed. The other 46 were rescued in an operation that lasted almost 60 hours in sub-zero temperatures and concluded on Sunday. Most of the labourers, who were working on a highway expansion project, were able to “withstand the wrecking avalanche” because of the containers, rescuers told The Indian Express newspaper. “These metal shelters saved most of them. They had just enough oxygen to hold on until we got them out,” a senior rescue official told The Times of India. The newspaper reported that the force of the avalanche had hurled eight metal containers and a shed down the mountain. Uttarakhand state Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has thanked rescue teams for their efforts in challenging conditions. Members of the Indian army, national and state disaster response forces and local administration had worked to free the workers, using helicopters and drones for the operation. The rescue operation lasted almost 60 hours in sub-zero temperature [Indian Army] Many of the rescued workers are receiving treatment at hospitals in the state’s Joshimath town and Rishikesh city. Satyaprakash Yadav, a migrant worker from Uttar Pradesh who was among those rescued, said the “avalanche hit our container like a landslide”, according to a video released by the army. He added that the container he was in broke apart when the snow hit and it ended up near a river. “We managed to get out on our own and reached a nearby army guest house, where we stayed overnight,” he added. Rajnish Kumar, a worker from Uttarkhand’s Pithoragarh town, said most of them were sleeping when the avalanche struck. “When the snow hit the container, it sank about 50 to 60 metres down [the mountain]. The Army arrived quickly and rescued us,” he said, according to the army video. Gaurav Kunwar, a former village council member of Mana, told the BBC on Friday the area where the avalanche hit was a “migratory area” and that it had no permanent residents. “Only labourers working on border roads stay there in the winter,” he said, adding that it had rained for two days prior to the avalanche. The India Meteorological Department has warned of rainfall and snow in the northern states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, as well as Jammu and Kashmir till Tuesday. Avalanches and landslides are common in the higher regions of the Himalayas, especially during winter. Experts say that climate change has made extreme weather more severe and less predictable. There has also been a rapid rise in deforestation and construction in Uttarakhand’s hilly areas in recent years. In 2021, near 100 people died in Uttarakhand after a piece of a Himalayan glacier fell into the river, triggering flash floods. Follow BBC News India on Instagram, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. 25. Tarantella and the Musical Tradition of Southern Italian Greeks Tarantella and the Musical Tradition of Southern Italian Greeks Greek culture has been prevalent in Southern Italy since the 7th century BCE. Photo of 4th century BCE red figure volute-crater found in Puglia. Credit: Ghettoniala Public Domain The musical tradition of the Italian Greek populations of Southern Italy remains strong to this day, as do the variations of the language that has been spoken since the 8th century BCE. The popular tarantella folk dance and the accompanying songs are part of a long tradition of two ancient cultures that have influenced each other through the centuries. The first Greek colonies in modern day Italy were established in the south around 700 BCE by Achaeans. They were organized around two main centers. The first is located in the southeastern tip of Italy (in the Puglia region) and specifically on the Salento peninsula. The second center is located in Calabria, southeast of Reggio. As the colonies multiplied, the term Magna Graecia (Greater Greece) came into effect, a term that several of the local descendants of the ancient Greek settlers like to use to this day. In both Salento and Calabria, two dialects were semi-officially used before the unification of Italy into a single state in 1861. One was Greek with two subdialects, which in the Grecia Salentina region is called Griko, while in the Bovesia region, the similar Grecanico is spoken. The other, the Romance dialect, is derived from Latin, but is distinct from the official Italian language. Its exclusively oral transmission ensured its continuity and survival for over a thousand years. Archaic-Doric, Hellenistic and Byzantine influences from the local Romance dialect are found in these Greek linguistic idioms of Southern Italy, due to the long coexistence of the two dialects. Greek musical traditions The musical tradition of Magna Graecia goes alongside the customs and the linguistic traditions that developed over the years. It includes songs that correspond to all aspects of everyday life. Although there are differences between the musical traditions of Salento and Calabria, the popular poetry of these regions presents, for the most part, a varied but similar theme. Consequently, in all the communities of Southern Italy we see compositions such as laments, love songs (serenades), wedding songs, work songs, religious songs, lullabies, “short songs for the entertainment of children” and dance songs prevailing. The lyrics of the songs were written mainly in Greek and Romance dialects and more rarely in Italian, without showing any differences in the essence of their themes. Some of them are of particular beauty, emotionally charged and insightful. The tarantella is the most popular traditional dance of Southern Italy, also known as the “spider dance.” It took its name from the tarantula spider (tarantola) which was named after the Italian city of Taranto, where this species is found. Southern Italy and Sicily were colonized by the ancient Greeks in the 8th century BCE during the second colonization. From then on and for the next 200 years, Greek tribes founded colonies, creating the famous Magna Grecia (Greater Greece), which was marked by the cultural flowering of the Apulia and Calabria regions, starting from Brindisi and Lecce and reaching the Salento region. Despite the passing of centuries, Greek culture is still very strong in the region, with the famous tarantella forming a connection between Greek and Italian culture. Tarantella and the Grecanico dialect The Greek influence on the tarantella songs is in the lyrics, which are written and sung in the Grecanico dialect. The Greek community in Southern Italy remained distinct until the end of the Byzantine *******, when it merged with the Italian. This coexistence created a Grecanico-Italian dialect that combines words from ancient Greek and Byzantine times with the Italian language and musicality. The Grecanico dialect spoken by the inhabitants of the Greek-speaking villages of Southern Italy has reached modern times through oral transmission from generation to generation, and especially through the lyrics of the tarantellas. Today it is recognized as a dialect of the Greek language. It is the variety of Italiot Greek used by the ethnic Griko people in Calabria, as opposed to the Italiot Greek dialect spoken in the Grecìa Salentina. Both are remnants of the Ancient and Byzantine Greek colonization of the region. Myths about the origin of the tarantella vary, but there is no denying that it is a ritual and ecstatic dance, much like the frenzied celebrations and mystical rites of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, revelry, but also of mysticism and spiritual ecstasy. One popular hypothesis about its origin is related to the ancient Greek Pantheon religion and in particular to the worship of the god Dionysus. This is due to the similarity in its dance movements with those of the depictions of the Bacchides on ancient Greek vases. Another version of the origin of the tarantella comes from the people of Taranto. The dance traces its origins to Taranto, a city in Puglia, the “heel” of Italy’s “boot.” The city, in fact, takes its name from a type of wolf spider native to the area, a spider that became the subject of considerable myth and lore. According to popular belief, the spider’s bite was particularly venomous and induced frenzied behavior in its victims, who were usually women of lower socioeconomic status. The dance represented the frenzy that the bite of the tarantula spider brings to a person through dance. In the Middle Ages, people believed that the antidote for the treatment of the poisonous bite was to dance around the patient with spasmodic movements, like those of the spider. In this way, the tarantella came to symbolize liberation from suffering, extending this meaning to other social occasions, such as the liberation of women. The most popular folk dance To this day the tarantella is the most popular traditional dance in Italy and people dance the crazy dance in local festivals and fairs, always using lyrics in the Greek dialect. Although it is a medieval dance, today there are many local musical groups and bands that play this music and have made it an integral part of the Italian music industry. In fact, every year the festival “La Notte della Taranta” is organized, where tarantella music is played, attracting over 120,000 thousand visitors every year. The tarantella is one of the remnants of Magna Graecia and the Italian Greeks, highlighting the history of the region and acting as a cultural diplomat of the dance drama that connects Greek and Italian cultural heritage.
