When is The Assassin’s Creed Shadows Review Embargo Date?
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
When is The Assassin’s Creed Shadows Review Embargo Date? When is The Assassin’s Creed Shadows Review Embargo Date? All eyes are locked on Assassin’s Creed Shadows and its forthcoming review embargo date. This is one of the most important Assassin’s Creed releases ever, and the critical reception could have a huge bearing on the game’s success. Assassin’s Creed Shadows releases in the middle of a crowded March 2025. It needs to fight off the popularity of Hazelight Studios and its new Split Fiction release, and combat the physical forces of 2K’s WWE 2K25. Ubisoft has enough without worrying about other new titles. Shadows is reportedly not getting delayed again and will release in March. An abundance of Shadows leaks has already shown many people the game and what it has in store. But for everyone else, the Assassin’s Creed Shadows review embargo is crucial. Do we Know The Assassin’s Creed Shadows Review Embargo Date? The date is crawling up to us. Credit to Ubisoft The Assassin’s Creed Shadows Review Embargo Date is reportedly set for March 18—two days before the game’s official release date. In an exclusive Insider Gaming report, we revealed Ubisoft is confident about Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ March 20, 2025, release date. Our sources have also indicated “Assassin’s Creed Shadows reviews will be live on March 18, 2025.“ It’s fairly standard for review embargos to go live between two and five days before launch. It’s more concerning when a review embargo date is the day of the game or after launch. This is usually an indicator the developer and/or publisher isn’t happy with the product and therefore leaves the embargo until after players have bought the game. Ubisoft looks to be assured, and we should be getting Assassin’s Creed Shadows 48 hours before launch. What is a Review Embargo? A review embargo is the earliest point where a publication can release its final review. In this case, the Assassin’s Creed Shadows review embargo is set by Ubisoft. Reviews can’t be posted before this embargo, and any that are likely need to be taken down and can cause complications between parties. Review embargos have become a focal point of game launches in modern times. Players are eager to see, hear, and read reviews before they invest in a game. With Ubisoft’s mixed history with game launches—particularly Assassin’s Creed (look at AC Unity)—the early reception to Shadows could be make or break. If our information turns out to be incorrect, we will be sure to update this article. For now, you can start counting down the days until the Assassin’s Creed Shadows review embargo lifts. What scores will the RPG get? What average score will be enough for you to commit to a purchase? WSL: Could relegation be scrapped to expand the league? WSL: Could relegation be scrapped to expand the league? Representatives from all 23 clubs across the WSL and Women’s Championship attended a quarterly meeting last Friday. Among the topics discussed was the suggestion to temporarily scrap relegation in the WSL, but still allow one club a season to earn promotion from the second tier. The idea is that expanding the league would improve competitiveness, while clubs would be given stability – which in turn would encourage long-term investment. A two-thirds majority vote, to be taken by all clubs in both tiers, will be needed in May for the change to be made. The proposals are still being refined but one, according to the Guardian,, external would lead to relegation being scrapped for four seasons, from the 2026-27 campaign, as part of a gradual plan to expand both the top flight and Championship to 16 teams. Sources have told BBC Sport that several clubs in the bottom half of the WSL are in support of the idea, as they believe it would give them a better chance to compete in the future. In recent seasons, the promoted Championship club has needed to immediately spend at least £2m just to provide the necessary infrastructure, staffing requirements and player wages to meet the WSL’s ‘participation agreement’. Crystal Palace are currently four points adrift at the bottom of the WSL table, meaning the club promoted from the Championship could be relegated at the first time of asking for a second year in a row – after Bristol City last season. Meanwhile, sources at clubs higher up in the table – that are yet to break into the top four – believe that if their future in the WSL was secure, it could encourage owners to invest more in elite facilities and girls’ academies. Clubs could potentially offer more long-term player contracts and salaries as a result of that stability. However, those opposed to the idea feel it is against the fundamental values of English football, and there could be a risk that clubs neglect their women’s teams because there is no jeopardy of relegation. Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor said he wants to “keep it simple”. “Promotion and relegation are always going to be what supporters and teams play for. I think that really is going to be difficult to move away from,” he added. Perth Wildcats suffer heartbreaking semifinal loss to Melbourne United as all eyes now turn to Bryce Cotton Perth Wildcats suffer heartbreaking semifinal loss to Melbourne United as all eyes now turn to Bryce Cotton Perth Wildcats’ championship dreams are over following a heartbreaking one-point loss to Melbourne United on a night where a key goal-tending call was missed and Chris Goulding won the game with a free throw with less than one-second remaining. Melbourne won 113-112 after Goulding was fouled by Ben Henshall on a desperate final play. Goulding scored 30 points for the night. “My daughter when I left this afternoon said go win the game daddy,” Goulding said post-game. Camera IconChris Goulding kept hitting shots. Credit: Daniel Pockett/Getty Images But in a game which was decided by one point, a goaltending call will become a focus. Henshall’s attempt hit the backboard before Marcus Lee swatted it away and the referees let the game continue. All eyes will now turn to superstar Bryce Cotton as he makes a decision on his future. Perth have offered him the largest contract in NBL history to remain with the club, but know overseas teams have much deeper pockets. The five-time NBL MVP scored 33 points and is expected to receive life-changing offers to leave the NBL. He made a decision to wait until after the season to make a call on his future and will now start assessing his options. Captain Jesse Wagstaff will also have to make a call on whether he returns next season. The 38-year-old veteran of more than 500 games is clearly playing well enough to continue. He spent 20 minutes on court and levelled the scores with less than three seconds remaining. Kristian Doolittle was heroic with 37 points and 10 rebounds and the Wildcats will be desperate to lock him away for next season. But Ian Clark scored 38 for Melbourne. Camera IconPerth Wildcats import Kristian Doolittle. Credit: Daniel Pockett/Getty Images The Wildcats started brilliantly and raced to a 15-6 lead after less than four minutes. Then Cotton put his foot down. The brilliant Wildcat scored 16 points for the quarter including three three-pointers from four attempts and also got the free-throw line six times. Cotton scored 22 points in game one and 18 points in game two. Perth opened up a 14-point break during the first term and led 37-26 at quarter time as they maintained the rage from the final quarter of game two. But it wasn’t just Cotton. Keanu Pinder started the onslaught with his energy producing seven points. Kristian Doolittle had nine and Dylan Windler had seven. And Perth led the rebounding 11-4. Clark showed all of his NBA experience to score 10 points in the first quarter and he changed the game at the start of the second ******* with two three-pointers and three free throws in the first 90 seconds to make it a four-point contest. Camera IconIan Clark’s experience shone out. Credit: Daniel Pockett/Getty Images But Clark also had two fouls to deal with and spent time on the bench. Doolittle maintained the pressure for Perth before Goulding stepped up. The game one-match winner made three three-pointers and then Clark made another to give Melbourne the lead. Could Perth steady or was the home team’s momentum too much? Henshall made consecutive baskets and Perth went to half-time leading 62-58. Cotton had 22, Doolittle had 17 while Clark had 22 and Goulding had 20 in a wild shootout. Both teams had more than 70 points on the board early in the third quarter and they were both shooting at more than 50 per cent from the perimeter. Camera IconBryce Cotton was on fire. Credit: Daniel Pockett/Getty Images Then Melbourne grabbed some ascendancy. They fixed their rebounding issues and that gave them extra shots which they made the most of. United opened up a five-point lead late in the term and stopped Cotton from scoring for the entire quarter Doolittle scored 10 points for the quarter though and his teammates stepped up at key moments but Melbourne still led 87-84 with one quarter to play. The semifinal series was always going to be decided by the match winners. Goulding and Clark wanted to be those men. Goulding made his eighth three-pointer from 11 attempts to give Melbourne a seven-point advantage and Clark just kept making big plays too. Doolittle made it clear he’s enjoyed overseas play-off success for a reason and put Perth in front with 3:48 remaining with his 37th point.. Cotton also surged past 30 points as the game built to its crescendo. Camera IconMelbourne United are through to the grand final. Credit: Daniel Pockett/Getty Images The referees then missed the goal-tending call on a shot that would have put Perth in front. It was a crucial moment because Melbourne scored the next five points. There was always going to be a twist. Henshall then forced Matthew Dellavedova into an error, Perth went the length of the floor, won multiple offensive rebounds and then Wagstaff levelled the scores with a three-pointer. That left Melbourne 2.9 seconds to win the game. And Goulding made the play. People in Modern Societies Sleep More but Have Irregular Sleep Cycles People in Modern Societies Sleep More but Have Irregular Sleep Cycles A new study challenges the common belief that modern industrialised life results in chronic sleep deprivation. Despite concerns about screen exposure and daily stress impacting sleep quality, findings suggest that individuals in industrialised societies actually sleep longer compared to those in less industrialised settings. Data from multiple studies indicate that sleep duration is higher among people in modern environments, contradicting widely held assumptions. However, while sleep quantity is greater, regular circadian rhythms appear to be more disrupted in these settings. Study Findings on Sleep Patterns According to research published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, anthropologists David Ryan Samson and Leela McKinnon from the University of Toronto Mississauga conducted a meta-analysis of 54 global sleep studies. Their research examined the sleeping habits of 866 healthy adults, revealing that people in hunter-gatherer societies sleep fewer hours on average. Some groups recorded as little as 5.5 hours per night, while the general average in non-industrialised societies was 6.4 hours. In comparison, individuals in industrialised countries averaged over seven hours of sleep nightly. Efficiency in Sleep and Circadian Rhythm Disruptions Data also showed that sleep efficiency was higher in industrialised environments. It was reported that 88 percent of time spent in bed was used for sleep, whereas in less-industrialised settings, this figure was lower at 74 percent. Despite this, irregular circadian rhythms were more pronounced in industrialised societies. The circadian function index, which measures regularity in sleep-wake cycles, was recorded at 0.7 in non-industrialised societies but lower at 0.63 in industrialised settings. Researchers attribute this difference to reduced exposure to natural light cues, which help regulate sleep cycles. These findings suggest that sleep disturbances in modern environments may not stem from lack of sleep but rather from disrupted biological rhythms. Downing Street defends small boats plan as Channel migrant crossings increase Downing Street defends small boats plan as Channel migrant crossings increase Downing Street has defended it plan to stop small boat crossings after a 20% increase in migrants travelling across the Channel so far this year. In the first three days of March, 842 people made the perilous journey from France to the ***, Home Office data showed on Tuesday. Small boat arrivals hit a daily high over the weekend as 592 people travelled across the water on March 2. It is the largest number of arrivals on a single day so far in 2025 and takes the total number for this year to 2,716. This is 20% higher than at the same point last year, when the total stood at 2,255. But it is 8% lower than at this stage in 2023, when 2,953 had made the dangerous trip. The Prime Minister’s official spokesman insisted it would take time to bring down the number of migrants attempting to come to Britain in small boats. “We inherited a system in chaos, and we’ve all said that there are no quick fixes to curb the global problem of ******** migration,” he said on Monday. “But we put in place a serious and credible plan. Set up this new Border Security Command. We’ve ramped up removals. “We’ve given law enforcement greater powers than ever to take down these [people smuggling] gangs. “You’ve seen with our collaboration across borders with other agencies, significant arrests and disruption of people smuggling gangs across Europe in recent weeks and months. “You’ve seen us returning 19,000 failed asylum seekers, foreign criminals, ramping up the level of ******** working arrests and visits and we will remain focused on taking all the action needed.” Before Sunday the previous daily high for arrivals this year was 260, which was recorded on January 13. As weather conditions improve, arrivals are expected to continue to increase. French authorities have also released a statement on recuse operations that took place overnight from Saturday March 1, into Sunday. Migrants on a number of boats requested assistance from the French authorities throughout the night, including two on one boat who were suspected of having hypothermia. Earlier this year the Government announced new powers designed to “turbocharge efforts to smash the gangs” smuggling migrants across the Channel. Investigators will have the power to seize the mobile phones of suspected people traffickers and it will become an offence to endanger lives at sea under new laws designed to crack down on small boat crossings. People selling and handling parts of vessels being used to bring people across the Channel could face up to 14 years in prison under the measures announced by Home Office Yvette Cooper. Sunday’s figures take the total number of crossings since Sir Keir Starmer became Prime Minister to 25,958. The daily total is still some way off the highest number of daily crossings recorded, which was 1,305 on September 3 2022. Cryptography trick could make AI algorithms more efficient Cryptography trick could make AI algorithms more efficient Concepts from cryptography can be applied to speeding up algorithms Imago/Alamy Adding a dash of encryption to key algorithms used in artificial intelligence models could – surprisingly – make them more efficient, thanks to a trick of mathematics. Cryptography normally involves scrambling messages to make them appear random to malicious onlookers while preserving their information by hiding a pattern in the randomness. This randomness can then be unlocked with the correct key. Target (TGT) Q4 2024 earnings Target (TGT) Q4 2024 earnings Target on Tuesday warned that it expects a “meaningful” drop in first-quarter profit compared to the year-ago ******* as it contends with “ongoing consumer uncertainty,” soft sales in February and concerns around tariffs. The first three months of the year tend to be slow for retailers because consumers typically pull back after the holiday shopping season. But Target’s tepid guidance comes after Walmart and E.l.f. Beauty raised concerns last month about a slower than usual start to the year. Coupling those weak forecasts with a sharper-than-expected decline in consumer spending in January and the biggest drop in consumer confidence since 2021 in February, Target’s guidance is the latest warning sign about the health of the consumer and the U.S. economy. Plenty of Target’s troubles have been self-inflicted in recent years, but as a big-box retailer that caters to large swaths of the population, its performance can offer insight into spending patterns ahead, especially when other companies have made similar comments. In a statement, Target’s finance chief Jim Lee said February sales were “soft” and “declining consumer confidence” hurt discretionary sales. He also blamed “uncharacteristically cold weather,” saying it affected apparel sales. “We expect to see a moderation in this trend as apparel sales respond to warmer weather around the country, and consumers turn to Target for upcoming seasonal moments such as the Easter holiday,” said Lee. “We will continue to monitor these trends and will remain appropriately cautious with our expectations for the year ahead.” Beyond its outlook, Target reported fiscal fourth-quarter earnings and revenue that beat Wall Street’s expectations. Here’s how Target did compared with what Wall Street was anticipating, based on a survey of analysts by LSEG: Earnings per share: $2.41 vs. $2.26 expectedRevenue: $30.92 billion vs. $30.82 billion expected Target’s net income for the three-month ******* that ended Feb. 1 was $1.10 billion, or $2.41 per share, compared with $1.38 billion, or $2.98 per share, a year earlier. Sales dropped to $30.92 billion, down about 3% from $31.92 billion a year earlier. In the year-ago *******, Target benefited from an extra week, which has skewed year-over-year comparisons. For its current fiscal year, Target is expecting earnings per share to be between $8.80 and $9.80, which at the midpoint is more or less in line with estimates of $9.31, according to LSEG. However, it’s expecting sales to grow just 1%, well behind estimates of 2.6%, according to LSEG. Target’s first-quarter guidance will also likely surprise investors. While it declined to share specific figures, Target said it’s expecting “to see meaningful year-over-year profit pressure in its first quarter relative to the remainder of the year.” Meanwhile, analysts were expecting profits to grow 0.9%, according to LSEG. In the leadup to Target’s earnings report, the retailer raised its comparable sales guidance for the fourth quarter in January after it saw steady traffic during the crucial holiday shopping months, but it stood by its profit guidance, indicating that it relied on deals and discounts to drive sales. That strategy ultimately impacted profits. During the quarter, Target’s gross margin fell about 0.4 percentage points due in part to “higher promotional and clearance markdown rates,” it said in a press release. Target, which has long enticed shoppers with its wide range of discretionary merchandise, has struggled to win consumers over with those nice-to-have items amid persistent inflation, high interest rates and steep competition from online discounters and rival Walmart. That shift in mix has hurt Target because discretionary merchandise tends to be more profitable to sell than household essentials like groceries and toothpaste. The company has said that it’s been able to drive momentum when it offers new eye-catching merchandise – such as fresh workout gear, **** accessories or seasonal flavors of food. For example, customers showed up and spent when Target started selling leggings from All In Motion, which came in bright colors and glittery patterns, for $25, Chief Commercial Officer Rick Gomez told CNBC in an interview last month. They also responded well when Target redesigned bras from its intimates and sleepwear line, Auden. “When we have newness with style, on trend, at affordable prices, the consumer is willing to shop,” Gomez said. During the fourth quarter, comparable sales trends in apparel grew by nearly 4 percentage points compared to the third quarter and Target is looking to sustain that momentum. At the end of February, Target said it was partnering with Champion and Warby Parker, which will see both brands show up in Target stores and online. As part of its multiyear deal with Champion, Target will carry an exclusive line of sportswear that’s designed more for lounging and living, rather than proper gym clothes. With Warby Parker, Target will open five shop-in-shops and start offering the eyewear brand’s products online, with a larger rollout planned for next year. The partnerships are designed to entice shoppers with fresh merchandise, bring new customers in and position Target to compete against its rivals, but it may take some time before these deals start bearing fruit. Even though the agreements were announced at the beginning of the year, they won’t officially launch until the second half of 2025. Millie Bobby Brown says press are “bullying” her over appearance Millie Bobby Brown says press are “bullying” her over appearance Stranger Things actor Millie Bobby Brown has criticised recent press articles about her appearance, saying “this isn’t journalism, this is bullying”. The 21-year-old posted a three minute video on her Instagram page, in which she called out article headlines and the names of the reporters who wrote them. Brown has been on the promotion circuit in recent weeks for the press tour of her new movie The Electric State, whilst also making appearances at the SAG and Brit awards. “I grew up in front of the world and for some reason people can’t seem to grow up with me,” Brown said. She added: “Instead, they act like I’m supposed to stay frozen in time, like I should still look the way I did on Stranger Things season one. And because I don’t, I’m now a target.” The articles highlighted by Brown criticise her hair, face, body and style, with some insinuating she looks much older than she is. “The fact that adult writers are spending their time dissecting my face, my body, my choices, is disturbing,” Brown said. “That some of these articles are written by women makes it even worse,” she adds. Brown has grown up in the media spotlight since the age of nine, when she appeared in ABC drama Once Upon a Time in Wonderland and BBC America show Intruders. Her big break came in 2016, when she was cast as Eleven in the Netflix’s sci-fi hit Stranger Things. It led to worldwide recognition for Brown, who was nominated for various accolades at the SAG and Emmy awards. In her social media video, Brown concluded: “I will not be shamed for how I look, how I dress or how I present myself. “Let’s do better, not just for me but for every young girl who deserves to grow up without the fear of being torn apart for simply existing.” Brown has been praised by fellow actors in response to the post, including Sex and the City’s Sarah Jessica Parker, who wrote that she was “enormously proud”. Brown’s co-star in Enola Holmes, Louis Partridge, commented: “Well said Millie. Handled with grace.” Fellow former child actor and The Handmaid’s Tale star Mckenna Grace added: “No young woman or person deserves to feel pressure or cruelty for simply existing. You are so well spoken and so beautiful. Very well said, thank you for making this video.” Source link #Millie #Bobby #Brown #press #bullying #appearance Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Fox News Hits Trump With Uncomfortable Real-Time Reality Check On Live TV Fox News Hits Trump With Uncomfortable Real-Time Reality Check On Live TV Not even Fox News could put a positive spin on what was happening to the stock market as President Donald Trump unveiled new tariffs on Canada and Mexico on Monday. Trump praised Taiwan Semiconductor for its promise to invest $100 billion in new manufacturing facilities in the United States over the next four years, noting it will help the company avoid future tariffs. “If they did them in Taiwan to send them here, they’ll have 25% or 30% or 50% or whatever the number may be someday. It’ll go only up,” Trump said. “But by doing it here, he has no tariffs, so he’s way ahead of the game.” He called tariffs a “negative incentive” to get companies to invest in the United States. But Wall Street wasn’t convinced. World’s biggest iceberg runs aground off remote island World’s biggest iceberg runs aground off remote island Georgina Rannard Climate and science reporter Erwan Rivault Data journalist Getty Images The world’s largest iceberg has run aground in shallow waters off the remote British island of South Georgia, home to millions of penguins and seals. The iceberg, which is about twice the size of Greater London, appears to be stuck and should start breaking up on the island’s south-west shores. Fisherman fear they will be forced to battle with vast chunks of ice, and it could affect some macaroni penguins feeding in the area. But scientists in Antarctica say that huge amounts of nutrients are locked inside the ice, and that as it melts, it could create an explosion of life in the ocean. “It’s like dropping a nutrient bomb into the middle of an empty desert,” says Prof Nadine Johnston from British Antarctic Survey. Ecologist Mark Belchier who advises the South Georgia government said: “If it breaks up, the resulting icebergs are likely to present a hazard to vessels as they move in the local currents and could restrict vessels’ access to local fishing grounds.” The stranding is the latest twist in an almost 40-year story that began when the mega chunk of ice broke off the Filchner–Ronne Ice Shelf in 1986. We have tracked its route on satellite pictures since December when it finally broke free after being trapped in an ocean vortex. As it moved north through warmer waters nicknamed iceberg alley, it remained remarkably intact. For a few days, it even appeared to spin on the spot, before speeding up in mid-February travelling at about 20 miles (30km) a day. “The future of all icebergs is that they will die. It’s very surprising to see that A23a has lasted this long and only lost about a quarter of its area,” said Prof Huw Griffiths, speaking to BBC News from the Sir David Attenborough polar research ship currently in Antarctica. On Saturday the 300m tall ice colossus struck the shallow continental shelf about 50 miles (80km) from land and now appears to be firmly lodged. “It’s probably going to stay more or less where it is, until chunks break off,” says Prof Andrew Meijers from British Antarctic Survey. It is showing advancing signs of decay. Once 3,900 sq km (1,500 sq miles) in size, it has been steadily shrinking, shedding huge amounts of water as it moves into warmer seas. It is now an estimated 3,234 sq km. “Instead of a big, sheer pristine box of ice, you can see caverns under the edges,” Prof Meijers says. Tides will now be lifting it up and down, and where it is touching the continental shelf, it will grind backwards and forwards, eroding the rock and ice. “If the ice underneath is rotten – eroded by salt – it’ll crumble away under stress and maybe drift somewhere more shallow,” says Prof Meijers. Getty Images There are an estimated three million Macaroni penguins in South Georgia But where the ice is touching the shelf, there are thousands of tiny creatures like coral, sea slugs and sponge. “Their entire universe is being bulldozed by a massive slab of ice scraping along the sea floor,” says Prof Griffiths. That is catastrophic in the short-term for these species, but he says that it is a natural part of the life cycle in the region. “Where it is destroying something in one place, it’s providing nutrients and food in other places,” he adds. There had been fears for the islands’ larger creatures. In 2004 an iceberg in a different area called the Ross Sea affected the breeding success of penguins, leading to a spike in deaths. But experts now think that most of South Georgia’s birds and animals will escape that fate. Some Macaroni penguins that forage on the shelf where the iceberg is stuck could be affected, says Peter Fretwell at the British Antarctic Survey. The iceberg melts freshwater into salt water, reducing the amount of food including krill (a small crustacean) that penguins eat. The birds could move to other feeding grounds, he explains, but that would put them in competition with other creatures. Getty Images The iceberg is still huge but shrinking as it moves into warmer waters The ice could block harbours or disrupt sailing when the fishing season starts in April. “We will have to do battle with A23a for sure,” says Andrew Newman from Argos Froyanes. But scientists working in Antarctica currently are also discovering the incredible contributions that icebergs make to ocean life. Prof Griffiths and Prof Johnston are working on the Sir David Attenborough ship collecting evidence of what their team believe is a huge flow of nutrients from ice in Antarctica across Earth. Particles and nutrients from around the world get trapped into the ice, which is then slowly released into the ocean, the scientists explain. “Without ice, we wouldn’t have these ecosystems. They are some of the most productive in the world, and support huge numbers of species and individual animals, and feed the biggest animals in the world like the blue whale,” says Prof Griffiths. A sign that this nutrient release has started around A23a will be when vast phytoplankton blooms blossom around the iceberg. It would look like a vast green halo around the ice, visible from satellite pictures over the next weeks and months. The life cycle of icebergs is a natural process, but climate change is expected to create more icebergs as Antarctica warms and becomes more unstable. More could break away from the continent’s vast ice sheets and melt at quicker rates, disrupting patterns of wildlife and fishing in the region. Jakarta floods displace thousands, submerge 1000 houses Jakarta floods displace thousands, submerge 1000 houses Thousands of people have been evacuated in Indonesia’s capital Jakarta after floods swamped the region with heavy rain expected to continue over the next few days, officials say. Torrential rain since Monday has triggered floods of up to three-metres in and around Jakarta, the country’s disaster agency said in a statement, blocking some roads and submerging over 1000 houses and many cars. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung raised the alert level to the second highest of the critical stages, calling on the local government to activate water pumps to extract water from flooded areas and conduct weather modification operations – which typically includes shooting salt flares into clouds to trigger rain before they reach land. Local media reported floodwaters also swamped a hospital in the eastern town of Bekasi, with water entering some wards, forcing the evacuation of patients to other buildings, while other parts of the hospital were hit by power outages. Rescuers on rubber boats sailed through thigh-high water to evacuate residents that had been trapped in floods at a housing complex in Bekasi, Reuters reporters said. Sri Suyatni, 50, said she did not have time to collect her belongings before evacuating and her entire house was submerged in floodwater. “I hope the floods will soon recede,” she said. The Greater Jakarta metropolitan area, home to more than 30 million people, is regularly hit by floods. But several local media reported the current situation, particularly in Bekasi, was the worst since 2020. Floods killed 60 in Jakarta in 2020, following the heaviest one-day rainfall since records began in 1866. How will Kentucky pay for flood recovery? Beshear asks legislature to commit more money How will Kentucky pay for flood recovery? Beshear asks legislature to commit more money Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear and members of his administration are asking the Republican-controlled state legislature for additional funding to address extensive damage from last month’s deadly floods. At least 23 people died because of storms that struck Kentucky over Valentine’s Day weekend, and recovery efforts are expected to cost “hundreds of millions of dollars,” Beshear has said. President Donald Trump approved a major disaster declaration for the state, with 11 counties eligible for FEMA aid. But Beshear and members of his administration say more financial relief is needed — and they’re looking to the General Assembly for help. The House and Senate Appropriations and Revenue committees hosted a joint meeting Monday, where State Budget Director John Hicks testified on the status of flood recovery efforts alongside representatives from the Kentucky Emergency Management Center and Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Hicks said that while the damage is still being assessed, the administration feels “pretty certain” it will hit a $50 million cap on emergency spending, set by state lawmakers, and asked legislators to increase funding that’s appropriated in the state budget for natural disasters. When the legislature passed last year’s biennial budget, it included a provision labeled as a Necessary Government Expense relating to responses to natural disasters and the activation of the Kentucky National Guard, which is limited to $50 million each year. Hicks also proposed creating a State Aid for Emergencies, or SAFE, fund — similar to those set up in response to the 2021 tornadoes in Western Kentucky and 2022 floods in Eastern Kentucky. Hicks said the fund be used for debris removal, county road and bridge repairs and water and sewer utilities. He also pointed out that lawmakers could potentially move remaining funds set aside for damages from the 2022 floods, which struck the same region as this year’s floods. “We set aside some funds to the Transportation Cabinet for repair of state roads and state bridges from the Eastern Kentucky flooding disaster,” Hicks said. “… They’ve got about $20 million that is unneeded, and we’d like to put that $20 million toward the state road and state bridge repair that is resulting from this disaster. So just directing it from that prior disaster to this one.” Senate President Robert Stivers told reporters last week that the Senate met with Hicks and the Kentucky Emergency Management Center director, saying the conversations were “productive” and gave “quite a bit more insight and understanding.” “I think what they showed us was probably a preliminary on what they had, but we understood what they were talking about,” Stivers said. Meanwhile, House Speaker David Osborne told reporters last week that information about the flood damage “is just not adequate” because “people still don’t have a good grasp around what they’re dealing with.” “We’re going to do the best we can before we leave here, knowing that you can’t get into a situation where you just start issuing blank checks,” Osborne said of passing legislation before the current session ends. “But at the same time, we need to make sure that every need is being addressed as closely as possible and just do the best we can and get the best information we can.” Reporter Lucas Aulbach contributed to this report. Negotiations to avert a shutdown sputter as disputes over DOGE cuts persist Negotiations to avert a shutdown sputter as disputes over DOGE cuts persist WASHINGTON — Congress is careening toward a government shutdown in just 11 days as the discord between the two parties over funding talks grows, with no clear path to reach a deal. The government is set to run out of money at the end of next Friday, March 14. Republicans control the House and the Senate, but they need Democratic support to pass a funding bill as it is subject to the Senate’s 60-vote threshold. Hopes of a full funding deal have faded, so President Donald Trump and congressional leaders are falling back on a short-term bill to keep the government open on autopilot, most likely through the end of the fiscal year. But even that is running into obstacles. “I’m not optimistic. I don’t think we’re going to have a budget,” said Sen. John Kennedy, R-La. “My Democratic colleagues have been insistent that we include language limiting the involvement of the executive branch on spending decisions.” Democrats have pushed to include constraints on Trump and billionaire adviser Elon Musk’s attempts to close down or slash agencies without congressional approval. But Republicans say that’s a nonstarter as they support the Department of Government Efficiency-led budget cuts, which they say are about rooting out waste. “Democrats have to help negotiate this, and they’ve to this point shown no interest in finding a reasonable solution for that,” House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Johnson called for a measure “to freeze funding at current levels, to make sure that the government can stay open while we begin to incorporate all these savings that we’re finding through the DOGE effort and these other sources of revenue that President Trump’s policies are bringing to the table.” In a statement Sunday, House ********* Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said Democrats are interested in a deal that “promotes the economic well-being, health and safety of everyday Americans.” But he added that “there has been zero outreach from the Trump administration and House Republicans have walked away from the negotiating table.” The White House sent Congress a request for add-ons to the bill — or “anomalies” — that include $32 billion in transfer authority for the Defense Department, which some Democrats consider a slush fund. The request includes a $20 billion cut to IRS enforcement and an increase in funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement deportation operations. The document was viewed by NBC News and authenticated by two sources. “I think the White House anomaly requests are completely inadequate,” Sen. Patty Murray, of Washington, the top Democrat on the Appropriations Committee, said Monday when she was asked about the request. “And again, the solution is in front of us: short-term CR, tell our committee to get to work. Democrats are at the table. We are ready to do that.” Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, the chair of the Appropriations Committee, told NBC News on Monday that she’s “working on a two-track approach” that includes a full-year continuing resolution and a short-term bill of “maybe a month” to give more time for a detailed agreement. For Johnson, the first question is whether he can find enough votes to pass a stopgap bill in the House with a narrow GOP majority of 218-215. That may require Democratic votes as scores of conservative Republicans routinely vote against funding the government. Ordinarily, Democrats support short-term bills en masse. But this time, the GOP’s insistence on protecting or codifying the cuts by DOGE has given Democrats a point of opposition to rally around — after they’ve seen grassroots anger from federal workers and veterans. Democrats see the Trump-Musk effort as trampling on Congress’ power over spending, and some say they won’t support a bill that would let it continue. In addition, at least two moderate House Republicans have already blasted the idea of another continuing resolution. Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, argued that Congress needs to pass regular appropriation bills rather than kick the can down the road with a CR. “I am a NO on the CR. Congress needs to do its job and pass a conservative budget!” he wrote on X. “CR’s are code for Continued Rubberstamp of fraud, waste, and abuse.” Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., an Afghanistan and Iraq war veteran, slammed the CR, saying it wouldn’t allow for much-needed additional military funding. “A continuing resolution (CR) is bad for our military and weakens our national security,” Bacon wrote Sunday on X, without saying how he’d vote. “A CR means new weapons programs cannot get started. A year-long CR means we are not serious about building a military that will deter China, Russia and Iran.” But Bacon said Monday that White House officials reached out to him after his post and acknowledged that “anomalies” were needed to “plus-up” military spending. Johnson huddled with his GOP leadership team as lawmakers returned to the Capitol on Monday evening and got support for the CR plan. Rep. Andy Harris, R-Md., the chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, said he was on board, even though the stopgap measure doesn’t codify the DOGE cuts cheered by the ultraconservative group. All Freedom Caucus members voted last week to pass a budget resolution that calls for raising the debt ceiling by $4 trillion. “I think we’re charting new territory here with President Trump and his striving to get government efficiency going,” Harris said as he left the speaker’s office. Asked whether he’s worried about a shutdown, Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., a Freedom Caucus member, replied: “Nah.” “This town is very interesting. Deals seem to, like, fall out of the sky when they need to,” Donalds told NBC News while saying “the Dems are being ridiculous” by opposing DOGE cuts. Republicans are seeking to juggle a funding bill with an unrelated effort to pass a huge party-line package to advance parts of Trump’s agenda, which has drawn unified Democratic opposition. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., said Democrats will continue “telling the truth about what the Republicans are trying to do” and said it’s the majority party’s job to make a serious offer. “The Republicans have the majority,” Warren told reporters Monday. “They need to put forward a package that can pass the House and the Senate. That’s their job.” Source link #Negotiations #avert #shutdown #sputter #disputes #DOGE #cuts #persist Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Pro-Trump techies enraged by crypto reserve plan, causing early rift Pro-Trump techies enraged by crypto reserve plan, causing early rift David Sacks, U.S. President Donald Trump’s “AI and Crypto Czar”, speaks to President Trump as he signs a series of executive orders in the Oval Office of the White House on Jan. 23, 2025 in Washington, DC. Anna Moneymaker | Getty Images The Trump-tech alliance is showing its first real sign of distress. And it’s because of crypto. President Donald Trump counted on crypto execs and investors for a hefty portion of his 2024 campaign funds. He promised to reward them handsomely if elected by slashing regulations and by turning the U.S. into “the crypto capital of the planet and the bitcoin superpower of the world.” The president got off to a quick start, signing an executive order calling for the establishment of a working group on digital assets and pardoning Silk Road creator Ross Ulbricht. The SEC also dropped its years-long probe into Coinbase. While those moves were lauded by the most vocal techies who backed Trump’s candidacy, over the weekend the president took it a step too far in their view. In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump announced the creation of a strategic crypto reserve for the U.S. that would include not just bitcoin but several other digital currencies — ether, XRP, Solana’s SOL token and Cardano’s ADA. For the most part, Trump’s crypto backers all wanted a strategic bitcoin reserve. Such a move would entail using cash to buy bitcoin, which is widely viewed by crypto enthusiasts as a smart way to deploy capital into a decentralized currency that’s an alternative to hard money. As Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong wrote on X, bitcoin offers a “clear story as successor to gold.” By going well beyond bitcoin, the critics say, Trump would be using U.S. taxpayer money to buy much riskier assets that have unproven value and have the potential to bolster the net worth of a select few investors who own the coins. That’s all the more problematic to those who want to axe government spending by trillions of dollars, in support of Elon Musk’s cost-cutting mission at the so-called Department of Government Efficiency. “Taxation is theft,” wrote Joe Lonsdale, founder of venture firm 8VC and a vocal Trump supporter, in a post on X. “It should be kept to a minimum. It’s wrong to steal my money for grift on the left; it’s also wrong to tax me for crypto bro schemes.” David Sacks, the venture capitalist who was tapped by Trump to be the “White House AI and crypto czar,” took exception to Lonsdale’s comment, suggesting it’s premature to jump to any conclusions. Sacks and Lonsdale are part of the same conservative circle in the tech world, with Musk and Peter Thiel at the center. “Nobody announced a tax or a spending program,” Sacks wrote, in response to Lonsdale’s post. “Maybe you should wait to find out what’s actually being proposed.” The White House didn’t respond to a request for comment. But Lonsdale was far from alone. Naval Ravikant, a longtime tech investor and early crypto evangelist, wrote after the announcement that, “The US taxpayer should not be exit liquidity for cryptocurrencies that are decentralized in name only.” And Vinny Lingham, creator of blockchain startup Civic and a big crypto influencer, wrote, “Call me old fashioned but I don’t think the government should be pumping our crypto bags with taxpayer money while we are running a near $2trn deficit.” Agreement across the industry A major Trump supporter and big name in crypto joined the chorus on Monday. Billionaire bitcoin investor Tyler Winklevoss, who wrote just before the November election that you should vote for Trump “if you care about the future of crypto, free speech, justice, liberty, and democracy,” came out against the president’s crypto reserve plan. “I have nothing against XRP, SOL, or ADA but I do not think they are suitable for a Strategic Reserve,” Winklevoss wrote. “Only one digital asset in the world right now meets the bar and that digital asset is bitcoin.” David Marcus, the former head of Facebook’s failed crypto project, suggested that the majority of his peers in the crypto community have the same view. “Most—if not all—of the non-conflicted industry leaders are agreeing about this,” Marcus wrote, in reposting Winklevoss’ comment. Marcus, who’s now CEO of payments infrastructure startup Lightspark, declared in July that he was “crossing the Rubicon” and shifting his support to Trump and away from Democrats. Anthony Pompliano, a loud pro-Trump voice in crypto investing, committed over 1,500 words in his newsletter on Monday to the topic. He says Trump is willing to propose an agenda of buying risky tokens on behalf of the U.S. because the wrong people got to him. “We watched crypto projects, lobbyists, and special interest groups co-opt the President of the United States,” Pompliano wrote. “They told the President that any crypto-related reserve should hold tokens that were ‘made in America.’ This pitch was the perfect trap for a President who ran on the America First agenda.” Some of the wrath online was directed specifically at Sacks, who touted and backed various cryptocurrencies as a VC prior to joining the Trump administration, and whose firm, Craft Ventures, is an investor in crypto index fund manager Bitwise. A cartoon image of US President-elect Donald Trump with cryptocurrency tokens, depicted in front of the White House to mark his inauguration, displayed at a Coinhero store in Hong Kong, China, on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025. Paul Yeung | Bloomberg | Getty Images Sacks wrote in a post on X that he sold all of his crypto, including bitcoin, ether and SOL, before taking on his new role and “will provide an update at the end of the ethics process.” By late afternoon Monday, crypto prices had staged a dramatic reversal from their weekend rally that followed Trump’s announcement. Bitcoin fell about 9%, while ether slid 15%. XRP and SOL dropped even more. The slide appeared tied to President Trump’s confirmation of forthcoming tariffs, which hammered risky assets across the board and sent the Nasdaq down almost 3% at the close of trading. There were some voices in crypto who were less willing to publicly slam Trump’s reserve plan. Michael Saylor, the chairman of Strategy, which has effectively emerged as a bitcoin proxy due to its roughly $43 billion stash, told CNBC on Monday that he wasn’t surprised about Trump’s decision to include additional cryptocurrencies. “There’s no way to interpret this other than this is bullish for bitcoin and bullish for the entire U.S. crypto industry,” Saylor said. “I believe the best thing for the country is to move forward with an enlightened progressive policy toward digital assets.” Jonathan Jachym, global head of policy and government relations at Kraken, told CNBC that the crypto exchange is “encouraged to see that announcement” and that it shows the president is “staying true to commitments.” Even among the skeptics, Trump doesn’t appear to be losing broader support for his agenda just because of this one announcement. Backers like Lonsdale have been quick to post about other matters, complimenting actions taken by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Trump for pressuring ******** drug cartels. But coming just six weeks into Trump’s second administration, the reaction shows how quickly the outrage machine can activate when a proposal touches the nerve of a critical group of supporters. The debate adds interest to Trump’s first White House Crypto Summit on Friday, when investors will eagerly be awaiting more details. As Sacks wrote on March 2, in his first post about the announcement of the strategic reserve, “More to come at the Summit.” WATCH: U.S. needs ‘enlightened, progressive’ crypto policy Source link #ProTrump #techies #enraged #crypto #reserve #plan #causing #early #rift Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Stifel upgrades this lawn care product stock, sees more than 25% upside Stifel upgrades this lawn care product stock, sees more than 25% upside Shares of Scotts Miracle-Gro could be due for a strong rebound, according to Stifel. The firm upgraded the lawn and garden product stock to buy from hold, but lowered its price target to $78 per share from $70 in a Monday note. Stifel’s forecast still implies more than 25% upside from Monday’s close. Shares have pulled back more than 15% in 2025. However, analyst W. Andrew Carter thinks investors may have underestimated the company’s resiliency against macroeconomic pressures. SMG YTD mountain Scotts Miracle-Gro stock. “We believe the recent underperformance disproportionately overweight’s universal macroeconomic concerns despite SMG boasting key points of differentiation alongside adverse January/February with the latter a headwind, but in relatively inconsequential months,” Carter said. “We believe the shares dramatically undervalue the robust near-term earnings recovery and advantaged long-term growth profile stemming from the U.S. Consumer business’s unmatched position of strength.” The analyst also noted that, even with the stock under pressure — which he tied somewhat to adverse winter weather that hit revenue and the overall lawn and garden segment — the company still outperformed its peers. “Amid an improved but still imperfect 2024 season, SMG performed well, and we believe key customers’ caution around high-ticket discretionary should continue to bode well for the lawn and category leader,” Carter said. Analysts are split on Scotts Miracle-Gro. LSEG data shows that four have a buy or strong buy rating, while another six rate it as a hold. Jessica Pegula flies Austin finalists to Indian Wells on private jet Jessica Pegula flies Austin finalists to Indian Wells on private jet After competing in the finals of the ATX Open on Sunday, McCartney Kessler, Zhang Shuai, Yue Yuan and Anna Blinkova faced a lengthy trip to their next event in Indian Wells – until Jessica Pegula stepped in. American Pegula, who beat compatriot Kessler 7–5 6–2 in the singles final in Austin, offered the four players use of her private jet to fly straight from Texas to California. The world number four even waited until after the doubles final – which saw Yue and Blinkova beat Kessler and Shuai 3-6, 6-1 10-4 – to ensure everyone could make the 1,263-mile trip. The players would have otherwise faced a stopover in Los Angeles or trips to airports in Dallas and Houston, leaving little time to prepare for Indian Wells, which begins on Wednesday. “She could have left right after her singles final, but she is such a selfless and generous girl,” China’s Zhang posted on Instagram. “This message is not to show I took the jet, just wanted to appreciate and transfer the love.” Russian Blinkova and China’s Yue shared Zhang’s story on Instagram and also thanked 31-year-old Pegula, whose billionaire parents own NFL’s Buffalo Bills and the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres. Blinkova has been drawn to play Kessler in the first round at Indian Wells, while Yue will play Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska. Pegula, seeded fourth, has been given a first-round bye. Zhang will enter the doubles event later in the tournament. Source link #Jessica #Pegula #flies #Austin #finalists #Indian #Wells #private #jet Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

New MacBook Air launch expected imminently – all the latest news and rumors live New MacBook Air launch expected imminently – all the latest news and rumors live Refresh 2025-03-04T11:09:44.107Z The last Apple announcement of the newsroom ilk came in the form of the iPhone 16e reveal. Apple simply posted an information drop on its website and had the phone up for pre-order pretty sharpish. There was a decent amount of information to chew over but one could argue the announcement lacked Cupertino’s normal appetite for showmanship. I expect the announcement this week to be very similar to that of the iPhone 16e’s. 2025-03-04T11:05:03.059Z Thinking differently… (Image credit: Apple) In days gone by, Apple would normally have a couple of big events a year with an in-person or live streamed event that would usually see the reveal of a handful of products around specific categories, such as phones, tablets and computers. But as the crew at Cupertino have started to push out ever-more iterative updates to Apple’s product lines, these events have given away to announcements on social media and Apple’s own newsroom page. To me this lacks the spectacle but does give us regular Apple announcements to chew over. 2025-03-04T10:47:29.587Z Hello. Mobile Computing Managing Editor Roland Moore-Colyer here to take you through the Apple rumors and TechRadar musings so far.
