  1. Natasha Jonas v Lauren Price: Liverpudlian on ‘sliding doors’ moments which led to glory Natasha Jonas v Lauren Price: Liverpudlian on ‘sliding doors’ moments which led to glory Jonas called time on her amateur career in 2014 with a record of 57 wins and 26 defeats. She gave birth to her daughter, Mila, and was happy to never box again. That soon changed after the pro debut of a trailblazing Irishwoman and a phone call from a former Team GB team-mate. “I did some punditry work for Katie Taylor’s debut and Tom Stalker phoned me afterwards,” Jonas explains. “He said there will be a lot of opportunity for pro females now and asked if I’d ever think of coming back? I said ‘shut up, Tom’.” Jonas says she was “happy with her routine”. Mila had turned two and was in nursery and the media work was keeping her busy. But Stalker’s words kept ringing in her ear. After speaking to her immediate family, Jonas realised the boxing fire was still burning. “I phoned two cousins, my mum and dad,” Jonas adds. “I trusted their judgement and they knew the good and bad side to boxing. “They were there for me when I cried for two days, after losing to Katie in the amateurs. “But they all gave me their support and said I had nothing to worry about, especially as far as the baby is concerned.” Turning pro was a decision that paid off. In February 2022, Jonas stopped Chris Namus to become light-middleweight world champion and has since won all five world-title level fights. “If I could go back and talk to myself in some of those hardest moments earlier in life, I’d say ‘chin up, kid, it all works out in the end’,” she says. Retired St. Paul Police officer dies 15 years after she was assaulted in line of duty Retired St. Paul Police officer dies 15 years after she was assaulted in line of duty A 17-year veteran of the St. Paul Police Department died this past weekend from her injuries sustained in an assault in 2013. Retired officer Felicia Reilly, 67, died on Saturday, the police department said in a Facebook post. “It’s with great sadness that we share the passing of retired Saint Paul Police Officer Felicia Reilly, who passed away Saturday, March 1, 2025,” the post reads. “Those who knew Felicia remember her as compassionate, devoted, and an inspiration to many.” Felicia Reilly.St&*******; Paul Police Department The St. Paul Police Retirement Association (SPPRA) said in its roll call Reilly served the department form 1996-2013, confirming Reilly had died “from injuries she received in the line of duty.” Reilly suffered her injuries in March 2010, when she responded to a 911 hang-up call at the home of Thomas Swenson on the 1600 block of Birmingham Street. His mother told police he was threatening others and had been drinking after he stopped taking his bipolar disorder medication. Reilly’s orders to Swenson were ignored and Swenson assaulted the officer, reportedly hitting her in the back of the head several times. She was left with serious injuries, including double vision, migraines and memory loss. Swenson’s parents claimed during the trial that Reilly’s injuries happened after she tripped over furniture. However, Swenson was found guilty by a Ramsey County jury of 1st-degree assault and 4th-degree assault on a police officer and obstructing the legal process. He was sentenced to eight-and-a-half-years in prison. Source link #Retired #Paul #Police #officer #dies #years #assaulted #line #duty Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  5. GameSir launches the Super Nova wireless controller – and we’ve got special discount codes right here GameSir launches the Super Nova wireless controller – and we’ve got special discount codes right here Hall Effect sticks and silent ABXY buttons Compatible with iOS, Android, PC and the Nintendo Switch Includes auto start-stop charging station GameSir has launched the Super Nova wireless controller on Amazon and on the official GameSir website, offering Hall Effect sticks and silent ABXY buttons on top of multiple connection modes you can switch to your liking. It pairs well with iOS, Android, PC and the Nintendo Switch, so it does seem like a versatile peripheral to take with you no matter what platform you’re on. Now, controllers have always been a semi-issue for mobile – which we talk about in detail every now and then on our Pocket Gamer Podcast – so having a newcomer challenging the norm is always welcome. Hall Effect sticks are expected nowadays, but the added features such as the auto start-stop charging station and the 1000Hz polling rate are a plus. Obviously, it’s the way a controller looks that really seals the deal for people like me who are easily distracted by shiny new things, so the GameSir Super Nova offers the Nightfall Blue and Whipped Pink colour options to satisfy that condition. Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle options are available too, so you can expect minimal latency when you’re in the middle of a heated PvP match. Oh, and the 1000mAh battery is no small feat too, and if you ever feel like you need to customise anything, the GameSir app should help you do just that. I’ve personally been enjoying GameSir’s peripherals myself, so I do believe this new one won’t disappoint. If you’re curious about the Super Nova, you’ll be happy to know that GameSir is giving away discount coupons to celebrate the controller’s launch. It will set you back by $44.99 or £44.99 using these codes: AmazonUS/***: 10NOVAPRO GameSir Official Website: SNOVA10OFF I suppose there’s no better time than now to give it a go! 6. China to impose extra tariffs of 10%-15% on various US products China to impose extra tariffs of 10%-15% on various US products (Reuters) – China on Tuesday swiftly retaliated against fresh U.S. tariffs, announcing 10%-15% hikes to import levies covering a range of American agricultural and food products, and placing twenty-five U.S. firms under export and investment restrictions. COMMENTS: LIU JINLU, AGRICULTURAL RESEARCHER AT GUOYUAN FUTURES, BEIJING “This news has raised concerns about tightening domestic agricultural supplies, benefiting the sector. China’s 10% tariff on U.S. soybeans will increase costs and reduce U.S. imports, leading China to boost imports from Brazil and other countries. “However, South America, especially Brazil, is approaching its soybean export limit after years of growth (2024 exports are expected at 96 million tons). Currently in the harvest season, Brazilian soybeans have not yet arrived in large quantities at ******** ports but are expected in Q2. With the additional U.S. tariffs, the already tight soybean stock will become even more strained.” GENEVIEVE DONNELLON-MAY, RESEARCHER AT OXFORD GLOBAL SOCIETY, MELBOURNE “While the new tariff announcement is not as heavy as the 25% in 2018, it does target many of the same agricultural products. In addition, the 10% tariff may provide Beijing with the opportunity to increase the tariffs on U.S. agricultural goods by another 10% or even 20% in the coming months and years. “Soybeans were considered a weak link during the first Trump administration but ******** policymakers have learned lessons from that time and are, in theory, much better prepared, due in part to Beijing’s food import diversification strategy.” WANG ZHUO, PARTNER AT HEDGE FUND ZHUOZHU INVEST, SHANGHAI Raising tariff on China “will likely hurt the U.S. itself as it needs cheap ******** products to bring down inflation. Higher tariffs on U.S. agriculture products will also negatively impact China”, but countermeasures are politically necessary. “So, it would be wise to make some symbolic move without triggering an escalation in tensions.” DENNIS VOZNESENSKI, ANALYST, COMMONWEALTH BANK, SYDNEY “******** tariffs on U.S. wheat and corn imports should be supportive for demand for *********** wheat and barley exports. However, China’s recent slowdown in imports of feed grains from all origins should temper the excitement.” WAN CHENGZHI, ANALYST, CAPITAL JINGDU FUTURES, DALIAN CITY “Considering that China’s peak import ******* for U.S. soybeans has already passed, the impact of these countermeasures on the total volume of U.S. soybean imports is limited. Any price increases in the future are likely to be more of an emotional market response.” Story Continues OLE HOUE, DIRECTOR OF ADVISORY SERVICES, IKON COMMODITIES, SYDNEY “It is broadly negative for U.S. agricultural markets. It is going to have a bearish influence on prices. There are enough corn and soybean supplies in the world for China to make the switch, it is more of an issue for the U.S., 30% of U.S. soybeans still go to China.” EVEN PAY, AGRICULTURE ANALYST, TRIVIUM CHINA “It’s notable that Beijing’s response is restrained. Trump has now imposed a total of 20% tariffs on all ******** products. China’s tariffs impact a limited number of U.S. products, and remain below the 20% level. This is by design. China’s government is signalling that they do not want to escalate, they want to deescalate. “It’s fair to say we’re in the early days of Trade War 2.0. There’s still time and space to avoid a protracted, entrenched trade war if Trump and Xi can strike a deal.” ROSA WANG, ANALYST, SHANGHAI-BASED AGRO-CONSULTANCY JCI “From the supply and demand perspective, the short-term impact on the domestic market won’t be significant. The reasons are: 1. It is currently the South American soybean season, while the U.S. soybean is in the off-season; 2. The amount of U.S. soybeans purchased by China has decreased, and the proportion of U.S. soybeans in China’s soybean imports has dropped to 17%. “However, the large number of products involved this time will add further difficulties to China’s aquatic product exports to the U.S., especially tilapia exports. With the additional 10% tariff, the tariff on tilapia exports to the U.S. will reach 45%, making it basically impossible to export to the U.S.” (Reporting by Reuters Asia bureaus; Compiled and edited by Subhranshu Sahu) Source link #China #impose #extra #tariffs #products Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  8. Daniels the man of steal as Hawks haul in Grizzlies Daniels the man of steal as Hawks haul in Grizzlies A moment of magic from *********** Dyson Daniels has helped his Atlanta Hawks take the points in the dying seconds of an NBA nail-biter against Memphis. The Grizzlies had looked like holding on for a home victory on Monday night (Tuesday AEDT), but Daniels helped the visitors turn the game on its head as the final buzzer loomed. Desmond Bane had registered has first career triple-double for Memphis, but Daniels stole the ball from him with 3.8 seconds remaining. Daniels’ teammate Carl LeVert got the ball and streaked down the floor for a lay-up that beat the buzzer, confirmed after an official review. His hot hands at the death capped off a tremendous game for Daniels, who had three rebounds and seven assists to go with his 14 points. LeVert finished with 25 points, including 16 in the fourth quarter. Zaccharie Risacher top-scored with 27 points for Atlanta. Bane led Memphis with a season-high 35 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. The Grizzlies, already with Santi Aldama and Ja Morant sitting out with injuries, lost Jaren Jackson Jr less than two minutes into the game when he went down with a left ankle injury after trying to block a shot by Daniels. LeVert’s final basket marked the third straight Memphis loss when the opponent scored the winner in the closing seconds. The Grizzlies lost over the weekend to the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs. In Oklahoma City, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 51 points as the Thunder defeated the Houston Rockets 137-128 for their 50th win of the season. Gilgeous-Alexander reached 50 points for the fourth time this season, all in the past seven weeks. The NBA’s scoring leader finished with at least 40 for the ninth time in 2024-25. He made 18 of 30 field goals, went 5-of-9 on three-pointers and hit all 10 of his free throws. Jalen Williams added 24 points for the Thunder (50-11). Cam Whitmore matched career highs with 27 points and 11 rebounds, and Reed Sheppard added a career-best 25 points for the Rockets (37-24). Houston’s *********** duo Jock Landale and Jack McVeigh did their bit but couldn’t get their side over the line. Landale had 21 minutes of game time for three rebounds, one assist and six points. McVeigh also managed six points from just seven minutes of court time. In Philadelphia, Anfernee Simons scored 21 of his 34 points in the second half as the visiting Portland Trail Blazers, featuring *********** Duop Reath, beat the 76ers 119-102. Simons shot 13-for-26, including 6-for-11 from beyond the arc. Shaedon Sharpe added 20 points, a career-high 11 rebounds and five assists. Reath had a solid game for the Trail Blazers, with five rebounds, two assists and 13 points from 18 minutes on the court. Andre Drummond finished with 25 points, 18 rebounds and two steals for the 76ers. In Dallas, Zach LaVine scored 22 points and DeMar DeRozan added 20 as the Sacramento Kings beat the Mavericks 122-98, with the Mavericks losing Kyrie Irving late in the first quarter to a left knee sprain. The Kings have won four consecutive games, while the Mavericks have dropped two straight and four of five. Melbourne-born Irving landed awkwardly after being fouled on a drive to the basket and immediately grabbed his leg, remaining on the floor for multiple minutes. He was helped to the free-throw line and sank both shots before being helped to the locker room. In other results, Golden State scored a 119-101 road win over Charlotte, Miami beat the visiting Washington 106-90, and Detroit proved far too strong for the Jazz, winning 134-106 in Salt Lake City. 11. Gazans face tough choices as their future is debated on global stage Gazans face tough choices as their future is debated on global stage Paul Adams BBC News, Jerusalem Getty Images Jabalia, in northern Gaza, was once a bustling and tightly-packed refugee camp Jabalia, viewed from the air, is breathtaking. A Hiroshima-like wasteland stretches as far as the eye can see. The mangled carcasses of buildings dot the churned-up landscape, some leaning at crazy angles. Great undulating waves of rubble make it all but impossible to make out the geography of this once bustling, tightly packed refugee camp. And yet, as a drone camera flies over the wreckage, it picks out splashes of blue and white where small tent camps have been set up in patches of open ground. And figures, clambering over broken buildings, moving along streets of dirt, where food markets are springing up under tin roofs and canvas awnings. Children using a collapsed roof as a slide. After more than six weeks of Gaza’s fragile ceasefire, Jabalia is slowly coming back to life. Many, like Nabil, who returned have found their homes damaged or completely destroyed In the neighbourhood of al-Qasasib, Nabil has returned to a four-storey house that’s somehow still standing, even if it lacks windows, doors and – in some places – walls. He and his relatives have made crude balconies out of wooden pallets and strung-up tarpaulin to keep out the elements. “Look at the destruction,” he says as he surveys Jabalia’s ocean of ruins from a gaping upper floor. “They want us to leave without rebuilding it? How can we leave. The least we can do is rebuild it for our children.” To cook a meal, Nabil lights a fire on the bare staircase, stoking it carefully with pieces of torn-up cardboard. Laila, right, fears for younger generations who are not getting a regular education On another floor, Laila Ahmed Okasha washes up in a sink where the tap ran dry months ago. “There’s no water, electricity or sewage,” she says. “If we need water, we have to go to a far place to fill up buckets.” She says she cried when she came back to the house and found it wrecked. She blames Israel and ****** for destroying the world she once knew. “Both of them are responsible,” she says. “We had a decent, comfortable life.” Soon after the war began in October 2023, Israel told Palestinians in the northern part of the Gaza Strip – including Jabalia – to move south for their own safety. Hundreds of thousands of people heeded the warning, but many stayed, determined to ride out the war. Laila and her husband Marwan clung on until October last year, when the Israeli military reinvaded Jabalia, saying ****** had reconstituted fighting units inside the camp’s narrow streets. After two months of sheltering in nearby Shati camp, Leila and Marwan returned to find Jabalia almost unrecognisable. Marwan and Laila managed to stay in their home for the first year of the war “When we came back and saw how it was destroyed, I didn’t want to stay here anymore,” Marwan says. “I had a wonderful life, but now it’s a hell. If I have the chance to leave, I’ll go. I won’t stay one more minute.” Stay or go? The future of Gaza’s civilian population is now the subject of international debate. In February, Donald Trump suggested that the US should take over Gaza and that nearly two million ************ residents should leave, possibly for good. Faced with international outrage and fierce opposition from Arab leaders, Trump has subsequently appeared to back away from the plan, saying he recommended it but would not force it on anyone. In the meantime, Egypt has led Arab efforts to come up with a viable alternative, to be presented at an emergency Arab summit in Cairo on Tuesday. Crucially, it says the ************ population should remain inside Gaza while the area is reconstructed. Donald Trump’s intervention has brought out Gaza’s famously stubborn side. “If Trump wants to make us leave, I’ll stay in Gaza,” Laila says. “I want to travel on my own free will. I won’t leave because of him.” Across the way sits a nine-storey yellow block of flats so spectacularly damaged it’s hard to believe it hasn’t collapsed. The upper floors have caved in entirely, threatening the rest. In time, it will surely have to be demolished, but for now it’s home to yet more families. There are sheets in the windows and washing hanging to dry in the late winter sunshine. Most incongruously of all, outside a makeshift plastic doorway on a corner of the ground floor, next to piles of rubble and rubbish, stands a headless mannequin, wearing a wedding gown. Sanaa had to abandon her wedding dress business when she fled south at the end of 2023 It’s Sanaa Abu Ishbak’s dress shop. The 45-year-old seamstress, mother of 11, set up the business two years before the war but had to abandon it when she fled south in November 2023. She came back as soon as the ceasefire was announced. With her husband and daughters, she’s been busy clearing debris from the shop, arranging dresses on hangers and getting ready for business. “I love Jabalia camp,” she says, “and I won’t leave it till I die.” Sanaa and Laila seem equally determined to stay put if they can. But both women speak differently when they talk of the young. “She doesn’t even know how to write her own name,” Laila says of her granddaughter. “There’s no education in Gaza.” The little girl’s mother was killed during the war. Laila says she still talks to her at night. “She was the soul of my soul and she left her daughter in my hands. If I have the chance to travel, I will do so for the sake of my granddaughter.” Source link #Gazans #face #tough #choices #future #debated #global #stage Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Pegula praised for act of generosity to fellow players Pegula praised for act of generosity to fellow players The finalists of the ATX Open in Austin were spared a gruelling late-night trip to Indian Wells following Sunday’s action after American Jessica Pegula flew them to the tournament in the Californian desert in her private jet. Pegula, whose billionaire parents own Buffalo’s NFL and NHL franchises, won the singles title in Austin defeating compatriot McCartney Kessler 7-5 6-2, but hung around as Kessler and Zhang Shuai lost to Yuan Yue and Anna Blinkova in the doubles final. With the players then facing a quick turnaround ahead of the Indian Wells main draw beginning on Wednesday, Pegula offered to fly all of them to California for the WTA 1000 tournament. Zhang thanked Pegula for her generosity on Instagram, adding they would otherwise have faced a late-night layover in Los Angeles or trips to nearby airports in Dallas and Houston. “You know she can leave away right after her singles final, but she is such a selfless and generous girl,” Zhang wrote. “This message is NOT to show I took the jet, just wanted to appreciate and transferring the love.” Blinkova also shared Zhang’s story on Instagram and thanked world No.4 Pegula, who has amassed more than $17 million ($A27m) in prizemoney in her career. China’s Yue also expressed gratitude to US Open runner-up Pegula on social media for the luxurious ride. “Otherwise, we would all have been on the road for at least nine hours,” she added. Three airlifted after head-on ****** on Seven Mile Bridge in Florida Keys, sheriff says Three airlifted after head-on ****** on Seven Mile Bridge in Florida Keys, sheriff says Three people were airlifted to a mainland hospital Monday afternoon after a head-on ****** on the Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida Keys, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Highway Patrol. The ****** between a GMC Denali pickup and a BMW SUV happened around 2 p.m. on the iconic span that connects the Middle Keys city of Marathon with Little Duck Key in the Lower Keys, Sheriff Rick Ramsay told the Miami Herald. Florida Highway Patrol Master Sgt. Pedro Reinoso said the driver of the Denali was heading south and “for unknown reasons” turned into the northbound lane and struck the BMW. Firefighters had to extricate two people from the BMW. They were taken by ambulance off the bridge to Monroe County’s Trauma Star helicopter ambulance, which flew the people to Jackson South Medical Center, said Ramsay. A badly damaged GMC Denali pickup truck is parked on the side of the Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida Keys following a head-on ****** with a BMW SUV Monday afternoon, March 3, 2025. Two people in the BMW were flown to Jackson South Medical Center, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. The man driving the Denali was also airlifted to the mainland, Reinoso said, adding the driver is a local from Monroe County, whereas the man and woman in the BMW are from Maryland. Traffic on the Seven Mile Bridge was closed in both directions until around 4 p.m., the sheriff said. The ****** is under investigation by the FHP, and alcohol does not appear to be a factor, Reinoso said. This story will be updated as more information becomes available. 15. Autistic woman wrongly locked up in mental health hospital for 45 years Autistic woman wrongly locked up in mental health hospital for 45 years Carolyn Atkinson and Ben Robinson File on 4 Investigates Getty Images It took a clinical psychologist and others nine years to get Kasibba released (stock photo) An autistic woman with a learning disability was wrongly locked up in a mental health hospital for 45 years, starting when she was just seven years old, the BBC has learned. The woman, who is believed to be originally from Sierra Leone, and who was given the name Kasibba by the local authority to protect her identity, was also held on her own in long-term segregation for 25 years. Kasibba is non-verbal and had no family to speak up for her. A clinical psychologist told File on 4 Investigates how she had begun a nine-year battle to release her. The Department of Health and Social Care told the BBC it was unacceptable that so many disabled people were still being held in mental health hospitals and said it hoped reforms to the Mental Health Act would prevent inappropriate detention. More than 2,000 autistic people and people with learning disabilities are still detained in mental health hospitals in England – including about 200 children. For years, the government has pledged to move many of them into community care, because they do not have any mental illness. The government promised to take action after a BBC undercover investigation in 2011 exposed the criminal abuse of people with learning disabilities at Winterbourne View private hospital near Bristol. But all key targets in England have been missed. In the past few weeks, in its plan for 2025-26, NHS England said it aimed to reduce the reliance on mental health inpatient care for people with a learning disability and autistic people, delivering a minimum 10% reduction. However, Dan Scorer, head of policy and public affairs at the charity Mencap, is not impressed. “Hundreds of people are still languishing, detained, who should have been freed and should be supported in the community, because we haven’t seen the progress that was promised,” he told us. Dr Patsie Staite learned of Kasibba’s incarceration in 2013 when she was a rookie clinical psychologist carrying out a routine review of her care. But it would take nine years to free her. “I hadn’t ever seen anyone living in the situation that she was living in. And I think what was really shocking was it was all legitimised,” Dr Staite told the BBC. She said the apparently legitimate hospital setting masked the reality that Kasibba “was locked up for sometimes more than 23 hours a day”. Returning to the site of the hospital – which cannot be named to help protect Kasibba’s identity – Dr Staite pointed out a hole in the fence. It had been cut out, she said, so Kasibba could watch people walking by from the outside space of the locked annex where she was held. It is thought Kasibba, who is now in her 50s, was trafficked from Sierra Leone before the age of five. She lived in a children’s home for a while, but that placement broke down and, by the age of seven, she was moved into the long-stay hospital. Dr Staite said that staff had described Kasibba as “dangerous” and an “eye-gouger”. She discovered a single incident in the records which appeared to have led to these accusations of violence. Decades earlier, when Kasibba was 19 and before she was placed in long-term segregation, a fire alarm had gone off and the locked ward was being evacuated. Kasibba was distressed and, in the confusion, she was approached by another patient. She scratched her, causing a cut to the other patient’s eye. “That was how the incident was talked about ever since, ‘she’s an eye gouger and she caused so much harm to this other person’,” said Dr Staite. But “it just didn’t ring true”, she said, that a middle-aged woman with a learning disability who had lived in the hospital for decades could be that dangerous. After months of work, Dr Staite submitted a 50-page report to Camden Council – the local authority in north London which had originally placed Kasibba in the hospital. Dr Staite said it had already been accepted that Kasibba did not have a mental illness and her report concluded she was not dangerous and was safe to live in the community. A team of health and social care professionals was then set up in 2016, calling themselves “the escape committee”. Their mission was to free Kasibba. Dr Patsie Staite was in the team of professionals dubbed Kasibba’s “escape committee” Lucy Dunstan, from disability rights organisation Changing Our Lives, was appointed to be Kasibba’s independent advocate and to build a compelling case for why it was safe for her to leave the hospital. But Kasibba’s release could only be signed off by the Court of Protection, which makes decisions for people who do not have the mental capacity to make their own. Ms Dunstan said when she first met Kasibba, hospital staff simply introduced her as “the eye-gouger”. She said she recalls looking at Kasibba through a small window in the door that kept her locked in. “She was just lying on the the settee. It was a very empty room. Her life was completely impoverished,” she said. It would be six years from first having met Kasibba before Ms Dunstan got a call to tell her that the Court of Protection had ruled she could leave hospital. “I cried. Joy. Relief. Admiration for her. Pride,” she said. “It’s not about me and what we did, but that she did it and she showed them.” Now Kasibba lives in the community with the help of support workers, who engage with her and communicate with gentle touches, gestures and clear language. Her care manager said she loved fashion, was proud of her home and enjoyed social interaction. “She has the most amazing sense of humour. She’s a beautiful human being,” the manager said. “After about two weeks of working here she actually came up and gave me a hug. This is not an eye-gouger, you know.” The Mental Health Bill going through parliament will mean autistic people and those with learning disabilities in England and Wales, who do not have a mental health condition, will no longer be able to be detained for treatment. But the government has said it will not bring in any changes until it is satisfied there is sufficient alternative support in the community. And it will still allow people to be detained in hospital legally for up to 28 days for assessment. Jess McGregor, executive director of adults and health at Camden Council, said it was a “tragedy” that Kasibba had spent most of her life held in hospital. “I’m personally sorry,” she said. “She shouldn’t have experienced what she did.” The NHS mental health trust, which cannot be named to protect Kasibba’s identity, said at no point had the care it delivered been brought into question and the service was rated as outstanding by the Care Quality Commission. The trust told File on 4 Investigates that anyone assessed as needing long-term segregation had a self-contained property with their own bedroom, bathroom, living room and garden. The trust said from 2010 it had been working with local authorities to put plans in place to support the discharge of all long-term residents to more appropriate care, where possible within the community, but said they were prevented from doing so by a legal case brought by the families of other patients. It said its staff had then worked tirelessly for years supporting local authorities to put the necessary support in place in the community and they were able to successfully close the service in 2023. 16. Roll back speed limits to curb child deaths, state told Roll back speed limits to curb child deaths, state told Slashing speed limits to 30km/h on local streets has been mooted to curtail child deaths and injuries as part of a long-term state vision. Infrastructure Victoria on Tuesday released its draft 30-year infrastructure strategy with 50 future proposals for housing, energy, transport, health and the environment. Most controversially, the independent advisory body called for speed limits to be reduced to 30km/h on streets frequented by children such as those around schools, playgrounds, childcare centres and kindergartens. It said seven children die each year on Victoria’s roads and almost 300 are seriously injured, mostly on local streets with speed limits of 50km/h. Jack Davey, 11, died and four other students were injured in October when a car ploughed through a fence at Auburn South Primary School in Hawthorn East. Teacher’s aide Eleanor Bryant was killed the following month after she heroically pushed children out of the way of a water tanker as it crashed into the Macedon Ranges Montessori Preschool. The report cited research that a pedestrian hit by a car at 50km/h had an 85 per cent chance of dying, compared to 40 per cent at 40km/h and 10 per cent at 30km/h. Under a long-running trial, the City of Yarra has 30km/h zones in Fitzroy and Collingwood. Other 40km/h zones only apply to schools at certain times and some other busy areas, and the change should cover streets with speed limits of 50km/h or below, the report said. Premier Jacinta Allan was non-committal on whether the government would heed the advice but acknowledged drivers slowing down would save pedestrians’ lives. Opposition roads spokesman Danny O’Brien said the coalition did not support blanket 30km/h speed limits in suburban or regional streets, calling it a “nanny state solution”. Ben Beck, a mobility and safety researcher at Monash University, said *********** kids were among the world’s least physically active but 30km/h speed zones would help stop the rot. “Our streets are no longer what they used to be – kids and parents do not feel that it’s safe to be walking, riding, scooting to school,” the associate professor said. The strategy, which is updated every three to five years, contained 43 recommendations and seven “future options”. Other notable suggestions were cheaper commuter fares outside peak periods, more goods being delivered during quieter hours to ease road congestion and a 15-year plan to provide 60,000 social homes. The government should also examine expanding water desalination capacity, reconfiguring the City Loop and plan for the Melbourne Metro 2 rail project, Infrastructure Victoria said. The draft recommendations have an estimated price tag of between $60 billion to $75 billion but Infrastructure Victoria said they can generate at least $155 billion in benefits over the next decade. The final strategy will be tabled in parliament in late 2025 following community consultation. 17. Sheriff’s office makes error about Gene Hackman’s dog in initial death report Sheriff’s office makes error about Gene Hackman’s dog in initial death report SANTA FE, N.M. — News of the deaths of Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa pinged into Sherry Gaber’s cell phone as text messages from friends. “Do you know about this?” one friend asked, with a link to an article about the discoveries. Gaber’s heart dropped. The news of Hackman and Arakawa – close friends and clients – was bad enough. But what really sank her soul was the fact that their ******* shepherd, Bear, had died along with them. Just five months earlier, Gaber, an animal chiropractor, had run her hands along Bear’s fur, adjusting the animal’s atlas vertebrae, the topmost vertebrae in the cervical spine. She’d cooed the ******* shepherd and laughed with Arakawa. Bear seemed vibrant and happy, although still slightly favoring a right hip from a surgery a few months earlier. Now, she believed he was dead, found either in a closet or crate or bathroom floor, depending on conflicting news and official reports. The details didn’t compute. “I can’t handle that image,” Gaber said in an interview with USA TODAY. “That’s why this whole thing is so distressing.” “It just doesn’t add up,” Gaber said. That’s because it didn’t. Bear wasn’t dead at all. As Gaber read the news reports on her phone, the dog was alive and well, resting at a **** daycare facility in Santa Fe, along with the couple’s other dog, Nikita, a 7-year-old Akita-shepherd mix. USA TODAY learned the dog who perished in the Hackman home was actually Zinna, a 12-year-old reddish *********** Kelpie mixed-breed who had once trained in agility skills to compete at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Her body was found in a closed crate in the home, according to Joey Padilla, who transported the surviving dogs to his facility, Santa Fe Tails. Police continue to look into the details and causes behind the deaths of Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 64. They were discovered in separate rooms in their Santa Fe estate with signs of advanced decomposition, probably from being dead for over a week. As investigators try to establish a cause of death for the movie actor and his wife, their misidentification of Zinna could potentially raise doubts about other parts of their investigation. In their affidavit for a search warrant, sheriff’s investigators said deputies “continued to search the residence where they then observed/found a deceased brown in color *******-Shepard [sic] canine.” Details of the affidavit were reported by the media, leading friends to believe Bear had died. USA TODAY visited the Santa Fe Animal Shelter, the county agency responsible for housing animals when they are found with deceased owners. Officials there referred all questions to the sheriff’s office. It’s unclear how the dog was misidentified in the report. USA TODAY contacted Denise Womack-Avila, a spokeswoman for the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office, who’s leading the investigation. She said she hadn’t heard of the mistaken dog identity. She said investigators may have just misidentified the breed. “Our deputies do not deal with canines on a daily basis and I cannot currently speak to the condition or state of the dog’s body upon discovery,” Womack-Avila said in a text message response. Informed by USA TODAY that it was Zinna – not Bear – who was found dead in the home, Gaber gasped. “My body’s just shaking right now,” she said. “I’m grateful [it’s not Bear]. It’s still a tragic story.” Tough guy, everyman: Gene Hackman pursued anonymity and a private artist life in Santa Fe Hackman and Arakawa were devoted dog lovers Gaber met Hackman and Arakawa more than 18 years ago, when the couple learned of Gaber’s ability to improve animals’ health through chiropractic adjustments. Gaber focuses her treatment on the upper cervical spine to allow the body to better communicate with the brain, she said. Over the years, she has treated dogs, cats, bald eagles, owls, **** skunks, a porcupine (“I’ll never do that again”), rabbits, goats and a mountain lion. In 2003, Gaber helped a 1,400-pound buffalo walk straight again, a story captured in the 2007 book, “A Buffalo in the House,” by R.D. Rosen. Arakawa heard the story at a Santa Fe book event – and immediately reached out to Gaber. That sparked an 18-year relationship where Arakawa would bring her dogs into Gaber’s Santa Fe practice every few weeks to get adjusted. The two would also meet for dinner or go shopping around town. Joey Padilla, owner of Santa Fe Tails, was called to transport Gene Hackman’s surviving dogs, Bear and Nikita, from his home, after the actor and his wife, Betsy Atakawa, were found dead on the premises. He’s keeping the dogs at his boarding facility until lawyers for the Hackman family decide what the couple’s will said to do with them. When Arakawa rescued Zinna from a shelter, she contracted a trainer and began putting her through agility training – weaving through poles, tire jumps, ducking through tunnels – with the goal of entering her into Westminster, Gaber said. Gaber treated Zinna before and after training sessions and competitions, she said. As she got older, Zinna – short for zinfandel – stopped training. But Arakawa continued bringing the dogs in for sessions. “They wanted to do all the right things for their animals because they loved them so deeply,” Gaber said. The last time she saw Arakawa was in October, when she brought in Bear for an adjustment. The ******* shepherd, who Arakawa rescued from the side of Interstate 25, appeared to enjoy his session, Gaber said. She and Arakawa joked and promised to meet up again soon. Then, last week, the messages came in: Her two close friends were dead, as was Zinna. “I went into shock,” Gaber said. “I laid down underneath the stars and cried for an hour.” A star’s tragic end: Gene Hackman’s refuge – and mysterious death – at his Santa Fe home with wife Betsy Arakawa Dog trapping at the Hackman home Padilla, who took care of and trained the couple’s dogs over the years, got the call Wednesday afternoon. It was the handyman who had first discovered the bodies. The worker, who had done jobs for Hackman in the past, asked Padilla if he could come retrieve the surviving dogs. Padilla drove to the scene. Bear was found 10 to 12 feet away from Arakawa, while Nikita was running around in the sprawling backyard, skittish of all the commotion, Padilla said. Animal control had already collared Bear. Padilla tried to coax Nikita closer by opening and closing the door to Arakawa’s car, but she stayed clear, he said. One of Padilla’s employees tried drawing her close with treats, but also couldn’t get near enough. Finally, the animal control staffers set up a door trap for her overnight in the yard, which got her. Padilla returned on Thursday to retrieve the dogs. While he was there, Sheriff Adan Mendoza called one of Hackman’s daughters and put her on speakerphone, as he and Padilla inquired about what to do with the dogs. Overcome by grief, no one came up with an answer, he said. “It was overwhelming for everybody,” Padilla recalled. “There was a lot to intake. I finally said, ‘Listen, I’m just here to help.’” He drove the dogs to his **** daycare facility, where he’ll take care of them until lawyers sort out the couple’s will and determine if there’s any mention of what to do with the dogs. They won’t be taken to a shelter, Padilla said. “If only people knew how meticulous and amazing [Hackman and Arakawa] were with the dogs,” said Padilla, who took care of and trained the couple’s dogs over the years. “It breaks my heart.” Meanwhile, a local company donated food to feed the dogs and a veterinarian hospital offered to cremate Zinna, but authorities told them they were still investigating and needed the dog’s body, Padilla said. He said he wouldn’t speculate as to how Zinna may have died in the crate. But he said he was sure Hackman and Arakawa did everything they could to help those dogs – all the way to the end. “I think this is a tragic accident,” he said. “There’s no way that Betsy would have left that dog in a crate for any other reason.” Follow Jervis on X: @MrRJervis. 18. stocks moves amid Trump tariffs stocks moves amid Trump tariffs European markets are heading for a negative open on Tuesday as U.S. President Donald Trump’s 25% import tariffs on ******** and ********* goods, and additional tariffs on China, are expected to go into effect later in the day. The U.K.’s FTSE 100 index is expected to open 42 points lower at 8,833, Germany’s DAX down 155 points at 22,982, France’s CAC 48 points lower at 8,165 and Italy’s FTSE MIB 346 points lower at 38,789, according to data from IG. The prospect of tariffs has rattled investors amid concerns that they will reignite inflation in the U.S. and escalate a global trade war. On Monday, all three major U.S. indexes dropped into negative territory after Trump confirmed in the afternoon that the U.S.′ 25% duties on Canada and Mexico would go into effect the following day and that that there was “no room left” for the two nations to negotiate these new import tariffs. Trump also slapped an additional 10% tariff on ******** goods. In retaliation, China announced overnight that it would impose additional tariffs of up to 15% on some U.S. goods and restrict exports to 15 U.S. companies. European markets traded higher on Monday, amid a charge in defense shares after regional leaders held security talks that touched on bolstered military spending. Elsewhere, euro zone inflation data encouraged expectations that the European Central Bank will cut interest rates when it meets on Thursday. Euro zone inflation dipped to 2.4% in February, slightly above analyst expectations. Meanwhile, the euro zone purchasing managers’ index showed that a contraction in the bloc’s manufacturing sector had eased to its least severe level in two years. On Tuesday, earnings are set to come from Continental, Thales and IWG, and data releases include the latest European unemployment figures. And it seems like they aren’t shying away from dabbling in the gaming industry. Speaking to Variety, Joe Russo recently stated that they “would definitely be open” to creating video games based on their upcoming Avengers films. Insomniac’s Spider-Man games and Eidos-Montréal’s Guardians of the Galaxy game are great games, but we haven’t gotten an Avengers level of scale in recent Marvel games. The Russo brothers took Marvel to new heights with the MCU, and we hope to see the same if they ever commit to making these games. But what does count as a good Marvel game? Well, aside from the titles just mentioned, we’ve recently seen the success of NetEase Games’ Marvel Rivals. Currently, Marvel Rivals is one of the few bright spots in Marvel gaming. The team-based shooter has been well-received, especially in a year where many live-service games have failed. But that’s where it also has its limitations. Russo brothers cooking again Avengers gaming era loading — Naveen (@NaveenXOfficial) March 3, 2025 As a hero shooter, Marvel Rivals doesn’t feature a story and does not provide the expansive single-player experience that you’d expect from a Marvel game, especially an Avengers game. Marvel fans have been waiting for an Avengers game that lives up to the potential of the franchise, and the Russos might be the ones to deliver it. We want to see more Marvel games Amy Hennig is releasing one this year! | Image Credit: Skydance Interactive In the past, movie tie-in games had a mixed reputation, but some were genuinely great (Spider-Man 2, X-Men Origins: Wolverine). The idea of an Avengers game based on Secret Wars could be the perfect way to revive this genre. The Russo brothers also recently collaborated with Netflix to create The Electric State: Kid Cosmo, a prequel mobile game that ties into their upcoming film The Electric State. So they’re already racking up experience. If we look a bit closer, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is another promising sign for the future of Marvel gaming. With Uncharted creator Amy Hennig at the helm, this new action-adventure game is set in World War II, and it focuses on Captain America and ****** Panther battling Hydra. If it succeeds in 2025, it could pave the way for more Marvel games to follow that formula. There is a problem with this whole situation, though. And that’s time. Avengers: Secret Wars isn’t expected to hit theaters until 2027, meaning any game based on it would likely arrive years later. We know how long game development can take (we’re looking at you GTA 6), so if the Russos do take on an Avengers game, it would likely be a long-term project. 25. Venus hits 25.1g/t gold while exploring historic Goldfields project Venus hits 25.1g/t gold while exploring historic Goldfields project Venus Metals has intercepted gold to 50 metres in depth, with a best hit of 4m at 10.3 grams per tonne (g/t) gold from 24m, including 1m at 25.1g/t gold, from its first reverse circulation drilling campaign at its Henderson project in Western Australia’s Goldfields. The results were obtained from the historic Hilltop gold mine, southwest of the company’s 202-square-kilometre exploration licence area and 60km northwest of WA’s historic gold town of Menzies. The project’s second drill hole nailed 2m at 2.82g/t gold from 50m. The drilling campaign is part of an extensive exploration effort Venus has underway, which also includes promising sampling of quartz-rich mullock from new sites at Hilltop and from rock chips picked up at its nearby Snake Hill. Venus’ Henderson licence encloses about 25km of the strike length of the prospective Mt Ida/Ularring Greenstone Belt in the Goldfields region. Gold at Hilltop occurs within massive meta-basalts, with near surface gold-rich zones being defined in a steeply-dipping, north-west/south-east trending fracture cleavage which the company says appears to be best developed in mineralised areas. The Hilltop mine is centred around two parallel, north-west trending lines of workings, about 70m apart, with its main historic gold production drawn from two shallow shafts on the southern line. Venus’ latest drilling program tested for gold underneath old workings at the mine. Seven holes were committed to the task for a total of 402m into both lines of workings. Both of the principal drill intercepts were from two holes on a single section designed to test beneath the shafts on the southern trend. The gold was found to occur within a broad zone up to 10m wide featuring elevated arsenic and lead assays which were traced about 20m along strike to where a third hole shows it to be only weakly mineralised. Encouragingly, previous reporting in 2021 by the company highlighted grades in mullock rock-piles near the shafts running to a maximum of 77.2g/t gold. The occurrence of abundant high-grade surface mullock along the southern line of the shafts was further confirmed by a 36.9g/t gold result reported in December last year, reinforced by the latest round of sampling that produced grades up to 17.8g/t gold. The northern line of workings features shallow north-west trending open stopes and old workings extending along a strike distance of about 125m. The primary characteristic of the open stope mining method is that the rock mass around the stope is strong enough to stand on its own, eliminating the requirement for extensive timbering or other support systems. The method is most suitable for steeply inclined orebodies as gravity helps to drop ore to the floor before it is removed to surface. It is also favoured for exploiting high-value ore deposits where maximising ore recovery is important, subject to rock strength. While drilling of the northern line of workings did not locate significant gold mineralisation, it identified steep, north-east dipping zones up to 3m wide carrying anomalous arsenic and gold down-dip from quartz veins exposed in the walls of open stopes at or near the surface. The big stopes and geochemical anomalism suggest the northern zone might have further potential that has yet to be fully evaluated and could justify careful assessment, further sampling and structural mapping. Apart from the mullock sampling at the main Hilltop mining area, Venus also undertook regional rock chip sampling at its Emerald North, Henderson, Snake Hill and Blue Well targets. About 8km north of Hilltop, the Snake Hill workings threw up a solid result of 14.03g/t along with 1.03g/t gold from mullock around old workings, highlighting the potential prospectivity of the area. The findings are in keeping with extensive gold anomalism identified in regional geochemical datasets for the Mt Ida Belt. Venus says it is encouraged by initial results from its first pass drilling at Hilltop and is looking towards a second stage of reverse circulation drilling to better define structural trends and lode orientation on the southern line of workings. The company also plans to drill the central part of the northern trend of workings where difficult access across steeper terrain meant some drilling metreage was omitted from the first program. Venus also sees its scout Snake Hill sample results as justifying follow-up soil sampling and additional rock-chip sampling, with future drilling subject to the results of that work.
