The ***** comes after weeks of complaining by President Donald Trump that the canal is under ******** control and that the US should take control of the major shipping route. Through a subsidiary, CK Hutchison Holding operates ports at the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean entrances to the canal. It said Tuesday that it would sell its interests as part of a deal worth $22.8bn (£17.8bn). CK Hutchison is not owned by the ******** government but its base in Hong Kong means it operates under ******** financial laws. It has operated the ports since 1997. The deal includes a total of 43 ports in 23 countries around the world, including the two canal terminals. It will require approval by the Panamanian government. The 51-mile (82km) Panama Canal cuts across the central American nation and is the main link between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Up to 14,000 ships travel through it each year, including container ships carrying cars, natural gas and other goods, and military vessels. It was built in the early 1900s. The US maintained control over the canal zone until 1977, when treaties gradually ceded the land back to Panama. After a ******* of joint control, Panama took sole control in 1999. Trump has made several arguments for retaking control of the canal and the surrounding area. He argued that ******** influence is a national security threat, that the US investment in the initial building of the canal justifies taking back control, and that US ships are charged too much for using the waterway. In a visit to Panama in February, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio demanded that the country make “immediate changes” to what he calls the “influence and control” of China over the canal. Panama rejected the US government claims and President Jose Raul Mulino has said the canal “is and will remain” in the central American country’s hands. In a statement announcing the business deal, Frank Sixt, co-managing director of CK Hutchison, said: “I would like to stress that the transaction is purely commercial in nature and wholly unrelated to recent political news reports concerning the Panama Ports.” BlackRock is one of the world’s largest asset management companies. Mammoth effort as scientists engineer woolly mice Mammoth effort as scientists engineer woolly mice Extinction is still forever, but scientists at US biotech company Colossal Biosciences are trying what they say is the next best thing to restoring ancient beasts – genetically engineering living animals with qualities to resemble extinct species like the woolly mammoth. Woolly mammoths roamed the frozen tundras of Europe, Asia and North America until they went extinct around 4000 years ago. Colossal made a splash in 2021 when it unveiled an ambitious plan to revive the woolly mammoth and later the dodo bird. Since then, the company has focused on identifying key traits of extinct animals by studying ancient DNA, with a goal to genetically “engineer them into living animals,” said CEO Ben Lamm. Outside scientists have mixed views about whether this strategy will be helpful for conservation. “You’re not actually resurrecting anything – you’re not bringing back the ancient past,” said Christopher Preston, a wildlife and environment expert at the University of Montana, who was not involved in the research. On Tuesday, Colossal announced its scientists had simultaneously edited seven genes in mice embryos to create mice with long, thick, woolly hair. They nicknamed the extra-furry rodents as the “Colossal woolly mouse”. Results were posted online, but have not yet been published in a journal or vetted by independent scientists. The feat “is technologically pretty cool,” said Vincent ******, a biologist at the University of Buffalo, who was not involved in the research. Scientists have been genetically engineering mice since the 1970s, but new technologies like CRISPR “make it a lot more efficient and easier,” said ******. The Colossal scientists reviewed DNA databases of mouse genes to identify genes related to hair texture and **** metabolism. Each of these genetic variations were “present already in some living mice”, said Colossal’s chief scientist Beth Shapiro, but “we put them all together in a single mouse”. They picked the two traits because these mutations are likely related to cold tolerance – a quality woolly mammoths must have had to survive on the prehistoric Arctic steppe. Colossal said it focused on mice first to confirm if the process works before potentially moving on to edit the embryos of Asian elephants, the closest living relatives to woolly mammoths. However, because Asian elephants were an endangered species, there would be “a lot of processes and red tape” before any plan could move forward, said Colossal’s Lamm, whose company has raised over $US400 million ($A638 million) in funding. Independent experts are skeptical about the idea of “de-extinction.” “You might be able to alter the hair pattern of an Asian elephant or adapt it to the cold, but it’s not bringing back a woolly mammoth. It’s changing an Asian elephant,” said University of Montana’s Preston. Still, the refinement of precision gene-editing in animals could have other uses for conservation or animal agriculture, said Bhanu Telugu, who studies animal biotechnology at the University of Missouri and was not involved in the new research. Telugu said he was impressed by Colossal’s technology advances that enabled scientists to pinpoint which genes to target. The same approach might one day help fight diseases in people, said Lamm. Slotkin was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018 and was reelected in 2020 and 2022. She was mostly known for pledging on the campaign trail to bring her bipartisan approach to the upper chamber. Slotkin said her bipartisan approach comes mostly from living in a household where her father was a Republican and her mother was a Democrat. “I believe in bipartisan legislation. It’s always better when it’s bipartisan,” Slotkin told CBS News Detroit in a one-on-one interview in October 2024. “The idea that I would just be so partisan that I couldn’t have Thanksgiving dinner with my dad just doesn’t work for me. National security, we’re just not trained that way,” she added. Within months of longtime Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow announcing that she would not seek reelection, Slotkin announced her bid shortly for the seat, becoming the first Democratic candidate to enter the race. In the August 2024 primary, Slotkin held a strong lead against actor Hill Harper before taking on Republican Mike Rogers in the general election. The Slotkin-Rogers race became one of the most watched because Michigan had not elected a Republican in over three decades. Police did not name the victims in the statement, but family members identified them as 51-year-old Donald Mayer and his wife, Tatiana Casap, TMJ 4, CBS 58 and 12 News reported. Later on Feb. 28, officers from Wakeeney Police Department in Kansas arrested 17-year-old Nikita Casap while the teen was allegedly driving Mayer’s car, according to a criminal complaint initially obtained by 12 News and reviewed by PEOPLE. The complaint alleges that Nikita had Mayer’s firearm on him, Nikita was charged with theft in connection with the vehicle and firearm; he has not been charged in connection with the deaths. Investigators soon learned neither Mayer nor the Casaps had been heard from in the days leading up to the discoveries of the bodies. On Feb. 28, around the same time that Mayer’s mother requested a ******** check, a resource officer from Nikita’s school requested the same thing, per the complaint. The resource officer said Nikita had maintained “perfect” attendance at the school — until he stopped showing up about two weeks prior. The couple had waning communication with those who knew them throughout the month of February, according to the complaint. Tatiana’s vehicle was last recorded in a license plate reader in the neighborhood on Feb. 11, investigators say. On Feb. 23, Mayer’s mother received “suspicious” and “weird” text messages from him, she told police. Mayer’s manager at work told authorities that he last heard from him on Feb. 25, and received a text from the victim’s number saying he was sick and couldn’t talk on the phone. Starliner commander says politics played no role in crew’s extended stay in space Starliner commander says politics played no role in crew’s extended stay in space Starliner commander Barry “Butch” Wilmore said Tuesday he did not think politics played any role in the crew’s extended mission, but he did not directly address earlier comments by President Trump and Elon Musk that the crew had been “abandoned” in space by the Biden administration. “Obviously, we’ve heard some of these different things that have been said,” Wilmore said during an orbital news conference. “I can tell you at the outset, all of us have the utmost respect for Mr. Musk and obviously, respect and admiration for our president of the United States, Donald Trump.” “The words they’ve said, politics, I mean, that’s part of life. We understand that. But again on Tuesday, the crew took multiple questions about what some see as the intrusion of politics on their mission. “From my standpoint, politics is not playing into this at all,” Wilmore said. “We came up prepared to stay long, even though we planned to stay short. That’s what we do in human space flight. That’s what your nation’s human space flight program is all about, planning for unknown, unexpected contingencies. And we did that.” Wilmore and Williams, both former military test pilots, launched to the International Space Station on June 5 last year aboard a Boeing Starliner crew ferry ship for a mission that was expected to last about eight days. The Starliner docked at the outpost the day after launch, but the ship ran into multiple problems with its propulsion system during its approach to the lab. In mid August, after a detailed engineering analysis, Boeing managers argued the problems were well understood and could be safely managed during the crew’s return to Earth. But NASA managers disagreed and eventually decided to bring the Starliner back to Earth by remote control, without its crew, in early September. To minimize the disruption to the station’s crew rotation schedule and on-going research, NASA opted to bump two astronauts from the next SpaceX Crew Dragon flight and to launch that mission, known as Crew 9, in late September with just two crew members on board. That left two empty seats for Wilmore and Williams. The Crew 9 mission was initially expected to end this month, but the flight was extended to late March because of issues preparing a new Crew Dragon for launch, sources said. NASA later decided to use a different Crew Dragon, clearing the way for Crew 9 to undock and head for Earth around March 19. NASA On Jan. 28, President Trump blamed the Biden administration for the Starliner crew’s extended stay in space, saying he had asked SpaceX founder Elon Musk to “go get” the two “brave astronauts who have been virtually abandoned in space by the Biden administration.” “They have been waiting for many months on @Space Station. Elon will soon be on his way. Hopefully, all will be safe. Good luck Elon!!!,” Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social. Hours before the president’s post, Musk said on his social media platform X that Mr. Trump had asked SpaceX to get the Starliner astronauts home as soon as possible, adding, “We will do so. Terrible that the Biden administration left them there so long.” Musk later said he offered to bring Wilmore and Williams back to Earth earlier, but he said his offer was turned down because “they did not want positive press for someone who supported Trump. That’s it. End of story.” Wilmore described the SpaceX CEO as “absolutely factual.” But he added that the crew had no knowledge of such an offer. “We have no information on that, though … what was offered, what was not offered, who it was offered to, how that processes went,” Wilmore told a reporter Tuesday. “That’s information that we simply don’t have.” “So I believe him. I don’t know all those details, and I don’t think any of us really can give you the answer that maybe you would be hoping for.” NASA plans to operate the ISS through 2030. In another recent post on X, Musk said the station should be brought down earlier: “It is time to begin preparations for deorbiting the @Space_Station. It has served its purpose. There is very little incremental utility. Let’s go to Mars.” When asked by tech and science news outlet Ars Technica to clarify, Musk responded on X by saying “the decision is up to the president, but my recommendation is as soon as possible. I recommend 2 years from now.” Williams said he disagreed. “This place is ticking, it’s just really amazing,” she said of the station. “So I would say we’re actually in our prime right now. We’ve got all the power, all of the facilities up and operating. So I would think that right now is probably not the right time to call it quits.” Given that the ISS is operated by NASA and multiple partner nations, the Starliner pilot said they should make the most out of it for taxpayers and international partners and “hold our obligations and do that world-class science that this laboratory is capable of.” If all goes well, Crew 10 commander Anne McClain, pilot Nichole Ayers, Japanese astronaut Takuya Onishi and cosmonaut Kirill Peskov will blast off and head for the space station on March 12. Organic and orange wines, non-alcoholic options and high-end fine vintages are all seeing increased demand, as growing health awareness and rising inflation hit consumer habits. Global wine production is expected to have fallen around 2% last year, hitting its lowest levels since 1961, according to the International Organization of Wine and Vine’s 2024 World Wine Production Outlook. Climate issues and adverse weather events played a big part in this drop, the industry organization said — especially in France, where output fell so significantly it was described as “substantially influencing the worldwide wine supply.” The decline in production has come hand in hand with a fall in consumption, following both economic challenges and changes in drinking behavior. The latest statistics show that world wine consumption dropped by 2.6% in 2023 compared to 2022, when it was “already low.” “People are actively trying to drink less,” Richard Halstead, COO of consumer research at alcohol industry research firm IWSR. While spirits like cognac and ******** are still reserved for special occasions, drinks like wine and beer — which used to be the daily go-to — are feeling the pinch, he explained. It’s sparked a change of focus for many in the wine industry, as wine becomes less of an everyday beverage and more of an occasional treat. “The industry is thinking on how people can spend a bit more money on it, by making the product more interesting. You see characteristics like natural, organic, orange, low-intervention, wine a bit more artisanal in nature.” Halstead said. “People want to be in control, they are more interested in the product itself, rather than it simply being an alcohol delivery mechanism.” This more specialized interest has driven growth in what used to be niche areas of winemaking. According to a study by market research firm Horizon, the size of the organic wine market will see a compound annual growth rate of 10.3% between 2024 and 2030, with Europe generating the largest revenue. In particular, she said people had started taking a deeper interest in finding out about the production process and origins of the wine they consume. “I think people are much more educated about what they’re drinking. They are having better developed palates, they are learning a bit more about complex wines, possibly higher-level wines, rather than buying more of simple, lower-end wines,” she said. The change comes as experts hope for a resurgence in the fine wine industry after an 11% fall in prices in 2024. According to experts, the demographics of fine-wine buyers is changing, with baby boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) “aging out” of the market, while younger generations are starting to engage, including through digital marketplaces which are helping to “democratize” access to the industry. Fokina agreed that people were now willing to spend more on one good bottle of wine, rather than buying three of a lesser quality, for example. There is also a growing interest in half-bottles of wine, she said, as people don’t necessarily want to open a full bottle of wine on, for example, a Tuesday night. Low and no-alcohol growth The younger generations are also spearheading growth in a different area of the industry: low and no-alcohol wines. Gen Z — often defined as those born between 1996 and the 2012 — now account for 45% of drinkers, and, in a stark contrast to their parents, they cite wellbeing as a driving force behind their behavior. According to research from Mintel, those aged 20-24 in the U.K. are half as likely to purchase alcoholic beverages than those from older generations, with one reason being the desire to prioritize lifestyle and wellness choices. The organization expects the market to grow at a compound growth rate of around 12% between 2023 and 2027, compared to a growth rate of 2% for beer and cider. Michel Doukeris, CEO of the world’s largest brewer AB InBev, struck a bullish tone on non-alcoholic drinks in a recent interview with CNBC. He highlighted the importance of social occasions to consumers and said alcohol-free options were enabling people to continue to socialize. “Usually, they could not drink because they need to drive home. Now they can drink non-alcohol beer, socialize with friends. Still drive and go home,” he said, adding that many people were adapting their routines by turning to non-alcoholic drinks. Here’s what the company reported compared to LSEG estimates: Earnings per share: $1.03. The number doesn’t to appear to be comparable to analyst estimates. Revenue: $1.06 billion vs. $1.03 billion Revenue increased 25% from $845.3 million a year earlier, and the company posted a net loss of $92.3 billion, or 37 cents per share. In the year ago *******, the company posted net income of $53.7 million, or 22 cents per share. For the year, CrowdStrike said it expects earnings, excluding some items, to range between $3.33 and $3.45 per share, falling short of the $4.42 expected by analysts polled by LSEG. First-quarter earnings are expected to be between 64 cents and 66 cents per share, versus the 95-cent average estimate. Despite the after-hours drop, CrowdStrike topped some metrics from Wall Street. The company posted $4.24 billion in annual recurring revenue, reflecting 23% growth. That topped the $4.21 billion estimate from analysts surveyed by StreetAccount and included $224 million in net annual recurring revenue. Revenue guidance was roughly inline with estimates. CrowdStrike said it expects revenue of between $4.74 billion and $4.81 billion for the year, versus an LSEG estimate of $4.77 billion. The earnings release comes almost eight months after a technology update from the company led to a global IT outage that grounded flights, disrupted businesses and led to class action lawsuits. CEO George Kurtz said in the press release that artificial intelligence is becoming more important in stopping cyber attacks. “As businesses of all sizes rapidly adopt AI, stopping the breach necessitates cybersecurity’s AI-native platform,” Kurtz said. According to a Gainesville Police Department news release, at around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, a gray Mustang was headed east on Hull Road when its driver attempted to make a left turn into a parking lot. At the same time the scooter was headed west on Hull Road. Both vehicles collided, causing the scooter rider to be ejected. The driver of the scooter, identified by UF spokesperson Cynthia Roldan as Nyla Holland, was transported to a local hospital where she died from her injuries. GPD’s investigation is ongoing. In a new memo delivered to the heads of all federal agencies, the Office of Personnel Management ― the human resources agency of the federal government ― says it doesn’t actually have to comply with its previous instructions to fire all probationary employees, or people who have generally held their jobs for a year or less. Instead, per this memo, federal agencies have until Sept. 13 to come up with their own plans for reducing staff. “OPM requests that agencies not issue any agency-specific rules until such rules have been reviewed and approved by OPM,” reads the revised guidance to federal agencies, issued by OPM acting Director Charles Ezell. Here’s a copy of OPM’s memo: Trump’s walk-back means the heads of federal agencies don’t have to plow ahead with more haphazard firings of essential staff, but it’s not clear what this means for the thousands of employees who have already been fired. The administration’s new directive comes after U.S. District Judge William Alsup last week ordered OPM to inform several federal agencies that it had no authority to direct them to carry out mass firings, and that such actions were likely ********. That ruling has already resulted in some federal agencies scrambling to rehire people they just fired. One of those agencies, the National Science Foundation, is currently trying to reinstate 84 employees it had fired as part of OPM’s directive. One of those 84 people told HuffPost on Monday that he and several of his colleagues learned they were getting their jobs back not from NSF, but from other coworkers and via the press. “What a joke, finding out from colleagues and online – and not directly,” said this employee, who requested anonymity so he doesn’t get fired again. Federal labor unions have filed lawsuits aimed at blocking the probationary firings and getting workers reinstated, arguing the White House had usurped Congress’ control over spending and violated rules that govern federal layoffs. Julie Wilson, general counsel of the National Treasury Employees Union, told HuffPost on Tuesday that the probationary firings are “indisputably a reorganization attempt” and that the administration had failed to follow proper procedures, including giving workers notice. “The government has not followed any of those [rules] in terminating employees to date, to include the mass firing of probationary employees,” Wilson said.
