Family welcome inquest into ******* backpacker *******
A long-awaited inquest into the ******* of a young ******* backpacker in Northern Ireland 36 years ago is expected to take place.
The body of Inga Maria Hauser, 18, from Munich was found in Ballypatrick Forest, Ballycastle, in 1988.
No-one has ever been charged in connection with her ********.
Claire McKeegan, who represents the Hauser family, said the inquest would be “the first full examination of the facts in the tragedy” of the *******.
A preliminary hearing is due to be held in Belfast later on Monday.
Ms Hauser went missing after arriving in Larne on a ferry from Scotland in April 1988.
Her body was found two weeks later.
In 2020, the Public Prosecution Service confirmed that two individuals reported in connection with the ******* would not be charged. It followed the submission of a file from police.
Police said at the time that they remained committed to bringing those responsible for the young student’s ******** to justice.
Ms McKeegan said Ms Hauser’s family, including her sister Friederike and her nephew Viktor, were “seeking justice and truth”.
“Since Inga’s brutal ******* in 1988, her family back in Germany have been desperate for the truth as to what happened to her that night, who inflicted this cruelty on her and why those responsible have not been brought to justice,” she told BBC News NI.
“Sadly her parents are not alive to see this day. The pain that they endured in the aftermath of Inga’s ****** was indescribable and all-consuming.
“This inquest will be the first full public examination of the facts in the tragedy of her *******.”
Ms Hauser’s mother ***** in 2019 and her father in 2006, never knowing what happened to their daughter.
The late SDLP politician, John Dallat, campaigned for years to keep a spotlight on the case.
Ms McKeegan said the Hauser family was grateful for the public support over the years, and in particular to Mr Dallat “for keeping Inga’s case in the public eye as the years went on and the case went cold”.

China’s Huawei starts taking pre-orders for Mate 70 smartphone
BEIJING (Reuters) -China’s Huawei Technologies on Monday announced that it had started taking pre-orders for its Mate 70 smartphone model, in a statement on its official WeChat account.
It will also hold an event for the Mate brand on Nov. 26, it said in a separate statement, where it is expected to unveil its latest smartphone line-up.
The company’s online store on Monday started allowing users to reserve the Mate 70 and two pro versions without requiring a ********. The website did not disclose prices.
Huawei returned to the 5G premium smartphone market last year with its Mate 60 phones that have domestically produced semiconductors.
The phones have been celebrated in China as a triumph over U.S. sanctions that have, since 2019, prevented the company from accessing advanced U.S. chips and other technology.

Albany trainer Steve Wolfe, jockey Tash Faithfull secure winning trebles in Albany Racing Club season opener
Albany jockey Tash Faithfull and leading local trainer Steve Wolfe each scored winning trebles at Albany Racing Club’s opening meeting of the season on Saturday.
The dynamic pair successfully combined twice on their way to three wins each on a gusty afternoon at Percy Spencer Racecourse for the seven-race card.
They celebrated their first win of the day in the West Cape Howe Maiden (1240m) when Faithfull steered $6.50-priced Jellybean Jones to victory, a half-head ahead of Daniel and Ben Pearce’s fast-finishing Written Sin ($7).

The duo then combined again in the Albany Stockfeeds Handicap (1100m), handing Wolfe his hat-trick when Tash Faithfull saluted with $3.70 favourite Avoidance to keep plenty of punters happy.
Wolfe’s second win of the day came after Chris Nicoll rode $51 outside Dodge ‘Em to a spectacular victory in the Monty’s Leap Handicap (1100m), saluting by a short neck ahead of Samantha Faithfull’s $2.70-favourite Flick The Switch, ridden by her daughter Tash Faithfull.
However the mother-and-daughter duo did savour victory together when Tash Faithfull netted her third win in the final race of the day, triumphing with promising five-year-old mare Beautiful Baroque ($2.60) who claimed the race by a nose to the Pearce-prepared Manhattan Strip.

Rebecca Bayliss took out the feature race of the day when Invincible Power ($2.60) saluted in the $40,000 Regional Championship Heat: Road to Ascot (1240m) with Kyra Yuill aboard.
Yuill edged out the Faithfull duo’s Vonsnip ($2.80) by short half-head, with the chasing field more than four lengths behind.
Indianna Weinert secured victory in the ABA Security Handicap (1500m) with Austin Galati-steered Playin’ Hardball and trainer Misty Bazeley’s $11 roughie Pingers was guided to victory by Chanel Cooper in the 1000m maiden to start the day.

The meeting that officially kicked off the Great Southern racing season was run at Percy Spencer Racecourse with the rail out 6m and the track was rated a Good 3.
Apprentice Amy Jo Hayes was reprimanded by stewards for not wearing the correct colours in race five and hoop Alex Hearn was fined $200 for whip breach in race three on Image Of Pro, using his whip four more times than permitted prior to the 100m.

Some ***** Americans who voted for Trump are concerned about his picks for key positions
Some ***** Americans who voted for Trump are concerned about his picks for key positions
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Just a week after winning a majority of the vote in several of the nation’s largest *****-majority cities, President-elect Donald Trump has filled top administration posts with staunch ******* supporters, including an ambassador to ******* who has claimed “there is no such thing as Palestinians.”
Meanwhile, the two Trump advisers who led his outreach to ***** Americans have not secured positions in the administration yet.
The selections have prompted mixed reactions among ***** Americans and Muslims in Michigan, which went for Trump along with all six other battleground states. Some noted Trump’s longstanding support for ******* and said their vote against Vice President Kamala Harris was not necessarily an endorsement of him. Others who openly supported him say he will be the final decisionmaker on policy and hope he will keep his promise of achieving an end to the conflicts in the Middle East.
Albert Abbas, a Lebanese ********* leader whose brother owns the Dearborn, Michigan, restaurant Trump visited in the campaign’s final days, stood beside the former president during that visit and spoke in support of him.
Now, Abbas says it’s “too early” to judge Trump and that “we all need to take a deep breath, take a step back and let him do the work that he needs to do to to achieve this peace.”
“I just want you to think about what the alternative was,” said Abbas, referring to the current administration’s handling of *******’s war in Gaza and its invasion of Lebanon. He added, “What did you expect from myself or many members of the community to do?”
Beyond promising peace in the Middle East, Trump has offered few concrete details on how he plans to achieve it. His transition team did not respond to a request for comment.
Throughout the campaign, his surrogates often focused more on criticizing Harris than outlining his agenda. And visuals of the conflict — with tens of thousands of deaths collectively in Gaza and Lebanon — stirred anger among many in ***** and ******* communities about President Joe Biden and Harris’ backing of *******.
Amin Hashmi, a Pakistani ********* in Michigan who voted for Trump, urged him to stay true to his campaign commitments to bring peace.
“I am disappointed but not surprised,” said Hashmi, who urged Trump to “keep the promise you made to the people of ***** descent in Michigan.”
Trump picks what pro-******* conservatives call a ‘dream team’
Those in the community with concerns have specifically pointed to former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, nominated as Trump’s ambassador to *******. Huckabee has consistently rejected the idea of a ************ state in territories seized by *******, strongly supported ******** Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and opposed a two-state solution, claiming “there really isn’t such a thing” as Palestinians in referring to the descendants of people who lived in Palestine before the establishment of *******.
While Huckabee has sparked the most concern among community members, other Trump Cabinet picks have strongly spoken in *******’s favor as it targets ****** following the militant group’s Oct. 7, 2023, ******* in which it ******* 1,200 Israelis and took hundreds more as ********.
Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, nominated for secretary of state, has opposed a ceasefire in the war, stating that he wants ******* to “******** every element of ****** they can get their hands on.”
Trump’s pick to be his ambassador to the ******* Nations, New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, led the questioning of university presidents over antisemitism on campuses. She has also opposed funding for the U.N. Relief and Works Agency, which oversees aid to Gaza.
The *********** ******* Coalition, which organized for Trump in Michigan, has been outspoken in its support for many of Trump’s Cabinet picks. Sam Markstein, the group’s political director, described the proposed lineup as a “pro-******* dream team,” adding that “folks are giddy about the picks.” He praised Trump’s pro-******* record as “second to nobody.”
“The days of this mealymouthed, trying to have support in both camps of this issue are over,” Markstein said. “The way to secure the region is peace through strength, and that means no daylight between ******* and the ******* States.”
No roles yet for key figures in Trump’s ***** ********* outreach
Among the reasons some ***** ********* voters supported Trump was that they believed his prominent supporters would be key in the next administration.
Massad Boulos, a Lebanese businessman and father-in-law of Trump’s daughter Tiffany, led efforts to engage the ***** ********* community, organizing dozens of meetings across Michigan and other areas with large ***** populations. Some sessions also featured Richard Grenell, former acting director of national intelligence, who was well-regarded by those who met with him.
Neither Boulos nor Grenell has been tapped yet for the coming administration, though Grenell was once considered a potential secretary of state before Rubio was selected. Boulos declined to comment and Grenell did not respond to a request for comment.
“Some people expected Trump to be different and thought Massad would play a significant role,” said ****** Siblani, publisher of the Dearborn-based ***** ********* News, which declined to endorse a candidate in the presidential race.
Siblani himself turned down a suggested meeting with Trump after the non-endorsement announcement.
“But now people are coming to us and saying, ‘Look what you’ve done,’” Siblani said. “We had a choice between someone actively ********* and ******** you and someone threatening to do so. We had to punish the person who was ********* and ******** us at the time.”

Shire of Denmark readies itself for rapidly approaching bushfire season with ***** safety weekend
Denmark prepared itself for the upcoming ***** season in a family-friendly weekend event designed to educate and entertain the community about ***** safety.

Shire of Denmark president Kingsley Gibson said the weekend demonstrated the readiness of the community.
“It was really well supported in that the brigade actually gained quite a number of new members from the weekend display in Strickland Street, and they felt really supported by the community,” he said.
“We’re very well aware of the risks in a drying climate, of having such a high percentage of our land area covered in forest.
“We also have the highest number of bushfire ready groups of any local government — so it shows that people are aware and are keen to be prepared.”

Shrouded in smog, Delhi pollution reading is the highest this year
Shrouded in smog, Delhi pollution reading is the highest this year
NEW DELHI (Reuters) – A thick blanket of toxic smog engulfed most parts of northern India on Monday and readings of air quality in the capital New Delhi hit their highest this year after dense fog overnight.
The smog, a toxic blend of smoke and fog, happens each year in winter as cold air traps dust, emissions, and smoke from ******** farm fires in some surrounding states.
Visibility dropped to 100 m (109 yards) in Delhi and Chandigarh, a city northwest of the capital, but authorities said flights and trains continued to operate with some delays.
India’s pollution control authority said the national capital territory’s 24-hour air quality index (AQI) reading was at 484, classified as “severe plus”, the highest this year.
According to Swiss group IQAir’s live rankings, New Delhi was the most polluted city in the world with the air quality at a “hazardous” 1,081 and the concentration of PM2.5 – particulate matter measuring 2.5 microns or less in diameter that can be carried into lungs, causing deadly ********* and cardiac issues – was 130.9 times the World Health Organisation’s recommended levels.
Experts say the scores vary because of a difference in the scale countries adopt to convert pollutant concentrations into AQI, and so the same quantity of a specific pollutant may be translated as different AQI scores in different countries.
Delhi authorities directed all schools to move classes online and tightened restrictions on construction activities and vehicle movements, citing unfavourable meteorological conditions and low wind speed.
Farm fires – where stubble left after harvesting rice is burnt to clear fields – have contributed as much as 40% of the pollution in Delhi, SAFAR, a weather forecasting agency under the ministry of earth sciences has said.
Satellites detected 1,334 such events in six states on Sunday, the most in the last four days, according to India’s Consortium for Research on Agroecosystem Monitoring and Modeling from Space.
Despite the polluted air, many residents continued their daily routines. Many buildings were barely visible, including Delhi’s iconic India Gate.
“Morning walk usually feels good, but now the air is polluted and we’re forced to wear a mask… There is a burning sensation in the eyes and slight difficulty in breathing,” Akshay Pathak, a resident of the city told the ANI news agency, in which Reuters has a ********* stake.
India’s weather department has forecast “dense to very dense fog” for the northern states of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan for Monday.

Teen with modified ******* arrested outside downtown Austin bar
AUSTIN, Texas – A 17-year-old was arrested and charged with multiple felonies after he allegedly tried to get into a downtown Austin bar with a handgun.
Xavier Sistrunk has been charged with third-degree felony places weapons prohibited, third-degree felony possession of a prohibited ******* and state-jail felony possession of a controlled substance, according to an arrest affidavit.
Court paperwork says that around 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 12, an Austin police officer was flagged down by bar staff in the 400 block of E. 6th Street about someone trying to get in with a handgun in his waistband. Bar staff there turned him away after overhearing him talking to a friend about having the **** and the friend telling him to “just go put it in the car.”
Staff described the person as a ****** male wearing a red hooded sweatshirt with white numbers on the back who was last seen walking down E. 6th Street towards Trinity Street. The officer, while talking to staff, noticed someone matching that description walking out of another bar. Staff then confirmed to the officer that that was in fact the person they believed to have the ****, court paperwork says.
Xavier Sistrunk " loading="lazy" width="960" height="540" decoding="async" data-nimg="1" class="rounded-lg" style="******:transparent" fifu-data-src="[Hidden Content] ****** COVERAGE
The person, later identified by police as Sistrunk, was seen by officers walking along E 6th then crossing at E 6th and Trinity while the crosswalk sign displayed a red hand for stop. Officers initially detained him for that, announcing themselves as police and taking hold of him. Officers in the affidavit state that Sistrunk “immediately tensed up and dropped his hands down towards his front waistband and began reaching for something in the area.”
Officers gave commands for him to “stop reaching” but Sistrunk continued to pull away and reach for his waistband, court paperwork says. An officer reported tackling Sistrunk to the ground and detaining him with handcuffs, before searching him and finding a handgun tucked in his underwear.
The **** was identified as a Glock .40 caliber ******* that had been modified with a “Glock switch” to make it automatic, says the affidavit.
A plastic bag with 0.6 grams of ******** was also found in Sistrunk’s pocket, court paperwork says.

G20 confronts a global order troubled by Trump’s return
G20 confronts a global order troubled by Trump’s return
Leaders of the Group of 20 major economies are meeting in Brazil for their annual summit, bracing for a shift in the global order with the return to power of US president-elect Donald Trump.
Discussions of trade, climate change and international security will run up against sharp US policy changes that Trump vows upon taking office in January, from tariffs to the promise of a negotiated solution to the war in Ukraine.
While US President Joe Biden arrives as a lame duck with just two months remaining in the White House, China’s President Xi Jinping will be a central player at a G20 summit riven with geopolitical tensions amid the wars in Gaza and Ukraine.
“It’s not only geopolitics that is causing us concern, but also that China’s role, its economic and financial role, is very prominent in many issues,” said a ******* official, who requested anonymity to discuss the diplomatic tensions freely.
While China has been in Russia’s camp on Ukraine, Germany believes Beijing will find that position ******* to sustain as the conflict has become “globalised” with Russia’s deployment of North Korean troops bringing it “to China’s doorstep”, another official said.
Diplomats drafting a ****** statement for the summit’s leaders have struggled to hold together a fragile agreement on how to address the escalating Ukraine war, even a vague call for peace without criticism of any participants, sources said.
A massive Russian air strike on Ukraine on Sunday shook what little consensus they had established, with ********* diplomats pushing to revisit previously agreed language on global conflicts.
The ******* States responded to the Russian ******* by lifting prior limits on Ukraine’s use of US-made weapons to strike deep into Russia.
Brazilian officials recognised that their agenda for the G20, focused on sustainable development, taxing the super-rich and fighting ******** and hunger could soon lose steam when Trump starts dictating new global priorities from the White House.
Brazil’s push for a reform of global governance, including multilateral financial institutions, might also hit roadblocks with Trump, Brazilian officials said.
“Trump has no appreciation for multilateralism. I don’t see many possibilities of a Trump administration engaging in these issues or showing any interest in them,” a source at Brazil’s finance ministry told Reuters on condition of anonymity.
Xi is expected to tout China’s Belt & Road initiative as it exerts its economic ascendancy.
Brazil has declined to join the global infrastructure initiative, but hopes are high for other industrial partnerships when Xi wraps his stay in the country with a state visit in Brasilia on Wednesday.
Brazil’s decision not to join was “a big ***** to relations,” said Li Xing, professor at the Guangdong Institute of International Strategies, affiliated with China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“China was very disappointed,” he said.
Trade talks around the G20 will be stoked by concerns of an escalation in the US-China trade war, as Trump plans to slap tariffs on imports from China and other nations.
Trump’s tax-cutting verve will add to headwinds for Brazil’s efforts to discuss taxation of the super-rich, an issue dear to Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva who put it on the G20 agenda.
Trump’s newest ally in ****** America, libertarian Argentine President Javier Milei, has already drawn a red line on the issue.
Argentina’s negotiators refused to approve mention of the issue in the summit’s ****** communique, diplomats said.

Prestige Beauty Continues to Outpace Mass in Circana’s Nine-month 2024 Results
Prestige Beauty Continues to Outpace Mass in Circana’s Nine-month 2024 Results
Beauty’s growth might be slowing slightly in the U.S., but consumers remain just as engaged, new data shows.
According to Circana data from January through September, prestige beauty’s growth is still beating out the mass market. The markets grew 7 percent and 2 percent, respectively.
More from WWD
Fragrance was the brightest spot across the board, soaring 14 percent in prestige and notching 2 percent gains in mass.
“After several years of fragrance being about luxury, this year was where the lower-priced side of prestige fragrance took off. We saw it starting in 2023, but it became a strong driver in 2024,” said Larissa Jensen, senior vice president of beauty and industry adviser, Circana. “It’s now about products that have a lower price point, whether it’s a mini or a body spray, but we’re seeing both sides of the coin grow.”
Prestige hair jumped 9 percent, while growing 2 percent in mass channels. The gains there, Jensen said, came from existing trends. “When you think about scalp care and hair loss, all of that is helping to drive hair overall,” Jensen said. “Styling products and treatments in prestige continue to do really well.”
Skin care grew 3 percent in prestige and 2 percent in the mass market. There, consumers are meeting in the middle of the overall beauty market, with higher-priced items in mass and lower-priced products in prestige capturing the most market share.
“When you look at the performance of mass and prestige, it’s pretty close. Everything else has a larger disparity between mass and prestige,” Jensen said. “I’ve been talking about the democratization of the category, because skin care is all about efficacy and consumers have learned they don’t have to pay a lot to get results. It’s a category that consumers go back-and-forth between.”
Makeup was the only category to drop in mass, falling 3 percent. Makeup in the prestige market, conversely, grew 5 percent. Lip cosmetics was the brightest segment in the category across both mass and prestige. In mass alone, lip was up 8 percent and represents a $1.4 billion business.
“Lip products are one of the highest impulse purchases for consumers — in terms of what they anticipate buying versus what they actually buy,” Jensen said. “You can also have multiple shades, different types and different formats. It’s the one bright spot in makeup for both mass and prestige.”
Brick-and-mortar ******** the most important channel in each, though Jensen called out that e-commerce grew faster than physical retail on the mass side of the business.
“On the prestige side, brick-and-mortar is going to continue keeping that side of the market and is performing better than e-commerce. But the big differentiator is that you can go and try a product in-store in prestige, and in mass, you can’t test and try,” Jensen said. “There’s also so many [stock keeping units] that can be carried within a particular display space [in mass].”
The outlook for holiday is optimistic, with Circana reporting that 29 percent of consumers expect to buy beauty as gifts, which is an improvement from 2023. That number is even higher for households with children, with 41 percent saying they will gift beauty products.

‘We are … far from being able to say the species is in a good place’
A generation ago, the Siamese crocodile was thought to be extinct. A 13-year conservation effort has helped the critically endangered species make a comeback.
In Cambodia, the crocodile is akin to China’s giant pandas or India’s tigers, and the animals are being bred in captivity before being released in the wild, the Associated Press reported. First reintroduced to their natural habitat in 2012, the crocodiles produced 106 eggs in June.
It marked a high and the most promising sign in two decades that the Siamese crocodile is thriving, the outlet reported.
There are about 1,000 of the crocs in the wild, including 400 in Cambodia. They were nearly ******* off by habitat destruction, poaching, and crossbreeding. The hunters who captured, bred, and massacred the creatures to sell their skins have helped them bounce back, too.
They are the source of purebred, fertile crocodiles, pulled from a population of 1.5 million mostly hybrids that were bred for leather, per the AP. After the females lay eggs, the eggs are incubated at the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre, allowing the crocodiles to develop before they are brought to a national park in the Cardamom Mountains.
Only one in 20 crocodiles born in the wild survives, according to the AP, but if they are bred captively and not released until they reach 1 meter in length, “their chances of survival increase exponentially.”
Watch now: Industry leaders speak on what gives them hope in the face of climate change
The conservationists also have to protect the reptiles’ habitat since 32% of the country’s tree cover was lost from 2001 to 2023, according to Global Forest Watch.
“Protecting habitat is the most important part of this whole project,” Pablo Sinovas of Fauna & Flora told the AP.
That’s why the discovery of the eggs was such good news. They produced 60 hatchlings.

The AP reported that a similar program in India worked wonders, and Sinovas has said that this could be “Cambodia’s most successful conservation story.”
“We are still far from being able to say the species is in a good place,” Sinovas said. “But it is making progress.”

E. coli outbreak linked to organic carrots sold at Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods
E. coli outbreak linked to organic carrots sold at Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods
Grimmway Farms recalled organic carrots after the product was linked to an E. coli outbreak that has infected 39 people from 18 states, the Centers for ******** Control said in an alert Nov. 17.
The CDC reported that 15 people have been hospitalized and one person has *****. The public health agency said that interviews determined those who had been infected consumed Grimmway Farms organic whole bagged carrots and baby carrots.
Some of the stores where the organic whole carrots and baby carrots were sold include Trader Joe’s, 365 (Whole Foods Market) and Wegmans. The U.S. Food & ***** Administration has included a full list of retailers that sold both types of carrots on its website.
The recalled organic whole bagged carrots do not have a best-if-used-by date, but the FDA said the items were sold from Aug. 14 to Oct. 23. The organic baby carrots have a best-if-used-by date extending from Sept. 11 to Nov. 12. The carrots should no longer be on grocery store shelves.
Any person who recently purchased the Grimmway Farms carrots is advised to immediately throw them away, the CDC said. Customers should then use hot soapy water or dishwater to cleanse any items or surfaces that came into contact with the carrots.
The alert came a day after Grimmway Farms addressed the recall in a press release on its website.
Grimmway Farms President and CEO Jeff Huckaby said in a statement that the company is reviewing its “growing, harvest and processing practices.”
“Our food safety team is working with our suppliers and health authorities,” Huckaby said.
Symptoms of infection with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting, according to the CDC. Shiga toxin-producing E. coli can also also lead to developing a serious kidney condition.
Symptoms typically appear about three to four days after consuming the infected food, according to the CDC. Those who are experiencing symptoms of an E.coli infection should seek medical attention.
The Grimmway Farms recall follows a wave of recent recalls and outbreaks around the country. Data from the U.S. Food & ***** Administration shows that the number of recalls in the U.S. has been steadily increasing over the last few years.
“There’s been a 20-25% increase in recalls over the last two to three years,” Darin Detwiler, professor of food regulatory policy at Northeastern University, previously said in an interview with TODAY.com.
Detwiler later explained, “Our food industry is relying on way more global sourcing of ingredients, so you’re increasing the chances for issues.”

Haydn Barron keen to take advantage of *********** PGA Championship berth
Haydn Barron keen to take advantage of *********** PGA Championship berth
Haydn Barron intends to make the most of his unexpected *********** PGA Championship invitation after failing to secure his DP World Tour card for next year.
The 28-year-old Perth golfer had been preparing to contest Monday’s tournament qualifying event at Wynnum before getting some good news on Sunday night when he received the invite that had been given to Lucas Herbert.
Herbert’s weekend win in the NSW Open meant that he no longer required an invitation to play at Royal Queensland this week.
“I walked Wynnum (on Sunday) and had a look around and tried to get my head around a few of the tee shots – it looked pretty quirky,” Barron said on Monday.

“I played some really difficult places in some difficult conditions, and the travel was tough.

Former St. Pete council member accused of hiding cameras in air vent to watch woman shower
Former St. Pete council member accused of hiding cameras in air vent to watch woman shower
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — A former St. Petersburg City Council member was arrested Friday for allegedly hiding cameras in an air vent so he could watch a woman as she showered and used the restroom.
An arrest affidavit shows 64-year-old Jeffrey Ronald Danner was taken into custody at his home in St. Petersburg on Friday, Nov. 15, for one count of digital voyeurism.
Suspect at large in ********* that left man *****, woman injured, Clearwater police say
The woman told investigators with the St. Petersburg Police Department that she noticed something unusual while she was in the shower at Danner’s residence. The two had reportedly known each other beforehand and she was temporarily staying at his home.
According to the woman, there appeared to be multiple cameras in an air vent in the bathroom, with one pointing directly toward the shower and the other toward the *******.

The woman took pictures of the cameras and showed them to police as evidence. She also shared a text conversation with investigators in which she confronted Danner over the cameras.
In the arrest affidavit, officers said Danner responded to the woman with a text message claiming he had never connected the cameras after realizing “how ******* and perverted it was.”
Detectives worked with the woman to conduct a controlled phone call in which they said Danner admitted to placing the cameras in the bathroom, then apologized and told her, “It was a ******* idea.”
Danner previously served as St. Petersburg’s District 8 City Council member. However, he reportedly lost his bid for reelection in 2021 to Richie Floyd.
Records show Danner was booked into jail without bond.

ASIC prosecutes National Australia Bank over alleged 400,000 days ******** to reply to loan hardship pleas
ASIC prosecutes National Australia Bank over alleged 400,000 days ******** to reply to loan hardship pleas
The financial services watchdog has accused National Australia Bank of breaching credit laws by repeatedly failing to respond to the pleas of vulnerable customers.
Unveiling a Federal Court prosecution of NAB, the *********** Securities and Investments Commission has pointed to 345 alleged cases of ******** to answer hardship pleas from home loan, credit card and personal loan customers within a 21-day deadline
And ASIC says the big four bank ******* to even give a lawful response to 320 of these official hardship pleas filed from June 2018 to October 2023 — meaning the bank ******* to answer pleas for an alleged total of more than 400,000 days.
ASIC chair Joe Longo claimed NAB unlawfully ******* to respond to “their customers’ appeal for help when they needed them most”., including people hurt by significant medical conditions, domestic ********* and the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The person seeking assistance may need some variation to their contract, their lending arrangements,” Mr Longo said. “Every situation is different, which is what makes this area really important for consumers.
“We have seen first hand the impact on lives and livelihoods when lenders fail to appropriately support customers experiencing financial hardship.
“Banks and lenders must have the right arrangements in place to respond to requests for assistance from customers experiencing financial hardship and to work constructively with them to find a sustainable solution. “
The latest Federal Court action comes on top of ASIC suing Westpac in September 2023 for financial hardship misconduct, alleging it ******* to respond to at least 435 notices within the 21 days set down by the National Credit Code. That case is due for a hearing in May next year.
The regulator released a detailed report in May this year claiming banks had inadequate focus on hardship polices, processes and practices.
Unveiling the NAB action on Monday, ASIC enforcement boss Alan Kirkland said the hardship probe indicated banks were taking “a cookie cutter approach to dealing with people’s hardship requests, as well as an onerous assessment and approvals process”.
“Many lenders aren’t taking their customers unique circumstances into account,” Mr Kirkland said.
“Banks and lenders need to put their customers front and centre and prioritise their approach to supporting customers facing hardship.”
NAB executive Sharon Cook apologised for the bank’s failings “when a number of our customers were in difficult situations and needed us to be there for them”.
“We are focused on ensuring these customers receive the support they need.,” she said.
“Following ASIC’s report into hardship practices across the industry, we have also been working on a new approach to supporting customers in financial difficulty. This includes consulting with consumer advocates.”
In the main part of its Federal Court claim, ASIC highlighted four alleged failings from July 2019 to July 2022 — all of which alleged breaches of the 21-day deadline and a ******** to honour its ongoing obligation to respond.
This last case involved a mortgage customer who had run out of ***** leave after being hit by COVID-19, whose self-employed husband was forced to lock down for five weeks and no income had been coming into their five-person household for two months.
“We are trying to catch up but it is proving very difficult when we are so far behind on our mortgage and all other bills,” the person said in a hardship plea not answered by Westpac.
ASIC also highlighted the pleas in January 2020 of a personal loan customer who had reported leaving a long-term domestic relationship, was down to one income and unable to make payment. Despite being told to contact the bank’s financial hardship team, she allegedly did not receive a response.
The July 2019 case involved a home loan customer who pleaded hardship after their employer shut and did not pay outstanding wages or redundancy entitlements.
An ignored November 2019 case involved a person whose reported “physical and mental health” issues after having quit their job due to bullying.

Taiwan’s APEC representative says no handshake or dialogue with China’s Xi, only wave
Taiwan’s APEC representative says no handshake or dialogue with China’s Xi, only wave
By Eduardo Baptista
LIMA (Reuters) -Lin Hsin-i, Taiwan’s representative at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Lima, said on Saturday that he greeted China’s President Xi Jinping with a wave, but there was no handshake or conversation, a sign of the tensions between Taipei and Beijing.
Taiwan, which takes part in APEC as “******** Taipei” and does not send its president to summits due to China’s objections, has faced increased military pressure from Beijing, including four rounds of war games since 2022.
The forum is one of the few international meetings both Taiwan and China take part in, and where officials from the two sides can interact, even if just to exchange pleasantries.
Beijing views the island as its own territory with no right to state-to-state relations. Taiwan’s democratically elected government rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claims.
Speaking at a press conference, Lin, chairman of government-backed investment fund Taiwania Capital and also a former economy minister, said that while Taiwan had bilateral talks with many APEC members, with Xi there was just a greeting gesture across the room where leaders were gathered.
“The motion of a greeting has no details…” he said, adding that there was no handshake with the ******** leader when asked.
The lack of interaction with Xi contrasts with the meeting Lin had with U.S. President Joe Biden the previous day, which the Taiwanese delegation described as a “lively” exchange of views.
The ******* States is Taiwan’s most important international backer and arms supplier, though Washington cut formal diplomatic ties with Taipei in 1979 in favour of Beijing.
Last year, Taiwan representative Morris Chang, founder of chip giant TSMC, also spoke with Biden but not Xi.
But in 2022, then 91-year-old Chang had a “very pleasant” and “polite” interaction with Xi at an APEC forum in Bangkok, where Xi asked about Chang’s health and Chang congratulated Xi on the success of the ******** ********** Party’s 20th Congress.
APEC 2026
As Taiwan struggles with Beijing’s strategy to make the island’s remaining diplomatic allies to cut ties in favour of Beijing, China’s push to host the forum in 2026, announced by Xi earlier on Saturday, has worried the island’s government.
At Lin’s press conference on Saturday, Deputy Secretary-General of Taiwan’s National Security Council Hsu Szu-Chien said that there were “all kinds of misgivings and concerns” among Taiwan and other APEC members about Beijing hosting the forum.
Hsu said one concern were new ******** legal guidelines published in June that impose the ****** penalty in extreme cases for “diehard” Taiwan independence separatists.
While ******** courts have no jurisdiction on the island, Hsu said that Taiwan had expressed worries the guidelines would be used against not only Taiwanese officials in China, but those from other APEC members as well.
“Other APEC members have similar concerns so the fact that a consensus was reached (on China hosting the forum) means Beijing has made promises in response to all members’ relevant concerns,” Hsu said.
