  1. Boeing needs to change its insular culture, CEO says in company-wide meeting Boeing needs to change its insular culture, CEO says in company-wide meeting By Dan Catchpole SEATTLE (Reuters) – Boeing (BA) CEO Kelly Ortberg told employees on Wednesday the company needs a more open culture where employees are encouraged to speak up and communicate across divisions, according to a partial transcript of a company-wide meeting seen by Reuters. “We’re very insular” and “we don’t communicate across boundaries,” he said during the all-hands meeting webcast from St. Louis, Missouri, the headquarters of its defense and space division. NYSE – Delayed Quote • USD At close: March 5 at 4:00:02 PM EST Teams within the sprawling company, which also includes commercial airplanes and global services divisions, “don’t work with each other as well as we could,” he said. “And the power of the Boeing Company is in us all kind of rowing the boat together.” Ortberg said a cultural change would boost morale for the company, which has more than 160,000 employees globally, and “the results will show in the marketplace.” Boeing declined to comment on his remarks. The company lost nearly $12 billion in 2024, and it has struggled to stabilize production of its best-selling 737 MAX, its 787 and several fixed-price defense programs, including two replacements for the U.S. presidential jet, Air Force One. Previously, Ortberg, who came on as CEO in August, has said the company has lost its “iconic” status and that resolving its safety and quality problems requires changing Boeing’s culture. Ortberg said on Wednesday his diagnosis of Boeing’s issues was informed in part by a culture working group composed of employees from across the company that was looking at its values and “probably more importantly” the company’s behaviors. (AP Photo/Lindsey Wasson) · ASSOCIATED PRESS He said he planned to put together an action plan based in part on an employee survey conducted in February that received responses from 82% of staff. Of the results, he said: “I think they’re going to be brutal to leadership, quite frankly.” Asked by an employee about developing better managers, Ortberg said the company was “going to step up the leadership development activity” and urged managers to listen to and care about their staff. In October, Ortberg announced plans to reduce the company’s workforce, then about 170,000, by 10%. The company issued at least 5,000 layoff notices in the U.S., mostly in November and December, based on publicly available records. Ortberg on Wednesday praised Boeing employees’ commitment to the company through its years-long struggles. “You know, to be honest with you, the fact that we don’t have huge attrition in the company, given what we’ve been through, is shocking,” he said. “But it’s because people are like, I want to be a part of turning the company around, I want to be a part of getting Boeing back to the reason I joined the company.” Source link #Boeing #change #insular #culture #CEO #companywide #meeting Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  2. YouTube Launches Premium Lite Plan With Ad-Free Streaming of ‘Most’ Videos, No YouTube Music Subscription YouTube Launches Premium Lite Plan With Ad-Free Streaming of ‘Most’ Videos, No YouTube Music Subscription YouTube on Wednesday (March 5) announced the launch of a new subscription plan which becomes the most affordable way to watch ad-free content on the video-streaming platform. Dubbed Premium Lite, its pilot has commenced which offers ad-free streaming of “most videos” on YouTube and is priced at $7.99 (roughly Rs. 695) per month. Currently limited to the US, YouTube says it will also be expanded to more regions over the coming weeks. YouTube Premium Lite The lower price tag only means that it must’ve cut back on some features compared to the standard YouTube Premium plan, and that it does. Although it offers ad-free streaming of YouTube videos, the Alphabet-owned platform does not bundle YouTube Music along with it, which means no streaming of ad-free music and music videos. While they can still listen to tracks with ads on the app, they do not have access to features such as background play and music downloads for offline listening, as per YouTube. YouTube emphasises that its new Premium Lite plan will offer ad-free streaming of “most” videos. However, that does not mean that you won’t see ads at all. The platform states that ads may still be visible on music content and Shorts, and as users search and browse content. The Premium Lite plan has been introduced as a pilot in the US and will soon be expanded to Australia, Germany, and Thailand over the coming weeks. Information about the launch of a new affordable YouTube Premium subscription was first reported last month. Notably, YouTube’s ad-free tier starts at $13.99 (roughly Rs. 1,200) per month in the US. As per the company, YouTube is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and has amassed a total of 125 million subscribers, including trials. The expansion of YouTube Premium with the new plan is just one of the ways the platform aims to offer a variety of ways for users to consume content. 4. US charges ******** hackers who targeted government dissidents US charges ******** hackers who targeted government dissidents Annabelle Liang Business reporter Getty Images US prosecutors have charged 12 ******** nationals for being part of an alleged hacking scheme, which sold data of US-based dissidents to the ******** government. The “state-sponsored” operation also targeted government agencies including the Treasury, according to the Justice Department (DOJ). Hackers also allegedly targeted an American religious organisation, and a newspaper in Hong Kong, the statement added. China has not responded to these specific allegations, but have strongly denied other accusations in the past. In December, the Treasury Department reported a “major” breach by ******** -sponsored hackers, saying they were able to access employee workstations and some unclassified documents. At that time, China denied any involvement, calling the accusation “baseless” and saying it “consistently opposes all forms of hacking”. It is unclear when the latest DOJ charges were issued – but they were unsealed in a federal court in Manhattan on Wednesday. Who is being charged? Among the individuals charged were two officers of China’s Ministry of Public Security. The DOJ said that hackers, which appeared to represent a private company, i-Soon, charged ******** agencies between $10,000 and $75,000 for each “exploited” email inbox. They allegedly “conducted computer intrusions” under the direction of ******** ministries and on their own initiative, and were “paid handsomely for stolen data”. “Today, we are exposing the ******** government agents directing and fostering indiscriminate and reckless attacks against computers and networks worldwide,” said Sue J Bai, who heads the DOJ’s National Security Division. “We will continue to fight to dismantle this ecosystem of cyber mercenaries and protect our national security,” she added. Who was targeted? No further details on the targeted US-based dissidents were provided. The religious organisation hit by hackers was described as one which “previously sent missionaries to China and was openly critical of the PRC government”. PRC is short for the People’s Republic of China. A Hong Kong newspaper was also on the list. While it was not named, the statement said that it was “considered as being opposed to the PRC government”. Besides US agencies, hackers were said to have targeted the foreign ministries of Taiwan, India, South Korea and Indonesia. Last October, the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said hacks targeting two major US presidential campaigns were carried out by “actors affiliated with the People’s Republic of China”. Earlier last year, seven ******** nationals were charged with running a hacking operation that lasted at least 14 years and targeted foreign critics of China. Operations linked by Western governments to China have also targeted the ***’s Electoral Commission, and the *** and New Zealand parliaments. 5. Melbourne still high after epic NBL playoffs battle Melbourne still high after epic NBL playoffs battle Melbourne United are riding high into the NBL championship series after booking their ticket with victory in a game being dubbed the best in league history. Chris Goulding and Ian Clark fired as United outlasted long-time rivals the Perth Wildcats in an epic playoff series decider, which ended 113-112 on Tuesday night. It was only settled with less than one second left on the clock when Goulding landed the crucial free-throw. The result sent last year’s runners-up Melbourne back to the best-of-five title series, where they will face the Illawarra Hawks. “I’m feeling excited,” United coach Dean Vickerman said on Thursday. “It was an amazing series that we just came through and what better way to prepare for a final with the runs that went in that (Perth) game and how resilient you had to be as a team.” Despite the tight turnaround before Saturday night’s championship series opener in Wollongong, Vickerman was happy to relive the unforgettable win over Perth. Goulding’s game-winning free-throw came after Wildcats veteran Jesse Wagstaff had tied the scores with a clutch three with 2.9 seconds on the clock. Rob Loe in-bounded to Matthew Dellavedova, who found Goulding under the bucket, where Perth youngster Ben Henshall fouled the United skipper and sent him to the line. “(Wagstaff) is a big-time player, always makes big shots, but I looked up and we had time to go the other way,” Vickerman said. “I just tried to get my own focus on what was the best play for that situation and the boys executed it to perfection.” Goulding (30 points) and Clark (38) were outstanding for Melbourne, while Kristian Doolittle (37) and five-time league MVP Bryce Cotton (33) could just as easily have won the see-sawing contest for Perth. During the broadcast, NBL legend Andrew Gaze led a chorus of big calls when he said: “I don’t think you’ll see a better game of basketball anywhere in the world.” In the aftermath, Vickerman simply told his players they should feel privileged to be a part of the extraordinary contest. “You can put that up against games in the Olympics or whatever, but we just know it was an elite game of basketball with the shot-making from both teams,” Vickerman said. As the dust settles on that special win, Vickerman and United are turning their attention towards the championship series. The Hawks will have home-court advantage after finishing one win clear of Melbourne on top of the regular-season ladder. “We know we’ve got to win one up there and that’s the message that I preached this morning,” Vickerman said. “The earlier you can get that, the better.” Melbourne beat Illawarra in Wollongong in October, but have since lost to the Hawks both home and away. 6. Bodybuilder Jodi Vance dies at age 20 Bodybuilder Jodi Vance dies at age 20 Jodi Vance, a 20-year-old bodybuilder, has died from “complications of severe dehydration,” her family shared in a statement posted on Instagram. The family noted that “her heart stopped” and hospital staff couldn’t revive her. “She was a beautiful person inside and out and she will be missed every single day. This was sudden and unexpected,” the statement reads in part. “If anyone takes anything from this, please put your health first.” Her coach, Justin Mihaly, shared a reel on Instagram with Vance’s family’s blessing, he said. “We’re all experiencing grief. Every one of us is experiencing sorrow. Jodi was freaking loved,” Mihaly said. “I believe that the beam of light that (Jodi) brought to every social interaction, every networking evening, expo show, I think that should be highlighted.” Addressing Vance’s death, he explained that she “made a significant error that was not part of our shared responsibility.” “Jodi used two extremely hazardous substances to improve her physique … without my knowledge, my approval, without the family’s knowledge, their approval,” he said. Mihaly said that tests from the hospital indicate that it’s likely Vance used “a potassium-sparing diuretic.” “We do know she had access to these things, and we now know that it was being used. That diuretic combined with the harsh **** burning drug … is something I have become an advocate against,” he said. “It had some poor downstream effects. It caused Jodi to code, which means her heart stopped.” The Cleveland Clinic says that people who take high doses of diuretics without drinking enough fluid can experience dehydration. Both the family and Mihaly noted that hospital staff were unable to resuscitate Vance. Mihaly said he had been worried about Vance prior to her death. “Recently the health had become quite concerning and now we know why. Now we have the answers,” he said. “Many people who love Jodi, including myself, tried to get her to pull off the gas pedal a bit. Anyone who knows Jodi knows how challenging that would be. … It was so hard getting her to pull back.” What are diuretics? Diuretics, also called water pills, assist the kidneys with moving salt and water into ****** and out of the body, the Cleveland Clinic says. They can help with heart failure, high blood pressure and more. Diuretics also are sometimes used by bodybuilders because they can enhance the appearance of muscles by reducing water retention in the body. Because diuretics encourage fluid evacuation, people who take them ******** frequently. Potassium-sparing diuretics are a class of diuretics that allow people to reduce the fluid in their body without losing too much potassium, an electrolyte that helps nerves, muscles and the heart work properly. While Cleveland Clinic notes that diuretics tend to be well tolerated in patients, they can cause side effects, including an electrolyte imbalance and dehydration. It’s recommended that people taking diuretics undergo tests to evaluate their kidney function and drink fluids to avoid becoming dehydrated, Cleveland Clinic notes. Microsoft’s $13 Billion OpenAI Tie-Up Cleared by ***’s Competition and Markets Authority Microsoft’s $13 Billion OpenAI Tie-Up Cleared by ***’s Competition and Markets Authority Microsoft’s $13-billion (roughly Rs. 1,13,164 crore) investment into OpenAI Inc. was cleared by the ***’s antitrust watchdog, ending months of uncertainty over the tie-up. The Competition and Markets Authority said that the 2023 deal doesn’t qualify for a full investigation under merger rules. The CMA said in 2023 it intended to look at whether the partnership gave either of the two firms more control and influence over another. The decision, after around 14 months of scrutiny, removes one *** regulatory uncertainty for Microsoft, which faces a continued investigation into its cloud service offerings. It also comes weeks after the US Federal Trade Commission raised concerns that the deal could extend Microsoft’s dominance in cloud computing into the nascent artificial intelligence market. “The CMA found that while Microsoft did acquire material influence over OpenAI in 2019, there has not been a change of control by Microsoft,” the CMA said in a statement. Microsoft’s bet on OpenAI gave the software maker an early lead over its Big Tech rivals by integrating its products into virtually every corner of its core businesses. Microsoft and Apple last year dropped plans to take board roles at OpenAI in a decision that underscored the growing regulatory scrutiny. The CMA has been at the forefront of attempts by global regulators to ensure Big Tech’s investments into the AI industry don’t distort the market or lead to a handful of all-powerful firms. The *** agency voiced its concerns about what it called an “interconnected web” of partnerships and investments in the AI ecosystem. It previously cleared Google’s partnership with AI firm Anthropic. © 2025 Bloomberg LP (This story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is auto-generated from a syndicated feed.) 11. Carnival, Royal Caribbean cancel voyages, ships stuck at sea Carnival, Royal Caribbean cancel voyages, ships stuck at sea In the same way hurricane season spoils some Caribbean cruise vacations each year, a rare extreme weather event in another part of the world is currently obstructing cruises. Some passengers sailing on Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruise ships just got word that their weekend getaway cruises from one cruise port won’t be happening as a severe weather system shuts down everything in its path. Related: Carnival Corp. pays for ‘cruise from hell’ A rare Category 2 tropical cyclone has taken aim at Australia’s southeastern coast. For the first time in many years, Brisbane is being directly impacted by a cyclone, causing the city to shut down trains, buses, and its port as it prepares for heavy rains, strong winds and flooding. As Tropical Cyclone Alfred approaches Queensland, with landfall expected on Friday near Brisbane, cruise ships sailing to and from the Port of Brisbane must stay safely away until the weather system passes. This means Carnival Luminosa and Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas, which homeport in Brisbane seasonally, are stuck at sea until the port can safely reopen. Carnival Luminosa was expected to return to the port on March 6 with Quantum of the Seas following on March 7. The captains will keep both ships a safe distance away from the area until Tropical Cyclone Alfred passes. Passengers currently on board will enjoy a couple of extra days at sea until the ships are able to safely return to Brisbane once the port reopens. Image source: Carnival Corp. Weekend cruises from Brisbane canceled With the port closed until Saturday, March 8 at the earliest, both cruise lines were forced to cancel their next sailings on the ships. Both had three-day weekend getaway cruises scheduled that won’t be able to happen. On his Facebook page, Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald shared a message that was sent to passengers who expected to board Carnival Luminosa in Brisbane on March 6. Royal Caribbean sent a similar communication to its passengers booked on Quantum of the Seas’ March 7 weekend getaway cruise. Related: Royal Caribbean has bad port news for passengers “Our Fleet Operations Center continues to keep a close eye on Tropical Cyclone Alfred. Given its current track, the storm is expected to directly impact the Brisbane area in the coming days and the port is now closed as it prepares,” Carnival Cruise Line stated. “Once the storm passes, officials must conduct a post-storm assessment before we can be cleared to safely return to port. We are anticipating that this process will take some time to complete, the earliest being Saturday, 8 March. Regrettably, we have no alternative but to cancel your voyage.” The cruise line noted that all passengers booked on the sailing will receive a full refund for their cruise fares and all pre-purchased items. Cruise lines prioritize passenger and crew safety amid severe weather threats Carnival Cruise Line’s brand ambassador added his own message for Carnival Luminosa passengers and all those in the Brisbane area, who unfortunately must prepare for the worst. “Just as I do when something like this happens on our ships that sail from our North American home ports I would like to say how sorry I am for you all,” Heald wrote. “I know you were looking forward so much to having Fun with us. I hope we will see you all re-booking and for now, most importantly please everyone in the Brisbane area, stay safe and let me know when you can how you are doing.” Related: Carnival Cruise Line under fire over cruise dining dilemma In the comments on the post, one passenger currently sailing on Carnival Luminosa shared a positive update from on board the ship. “Hey John, we are on Luminosa now (extended days) your crew are amazing, we have been updated throughout the cruise with as much information as has been available,” Hayley Lock wrote. “We know we are safe out here in the ocean. 13. AFL reschedules Queensland games impacted by cyclone AFL reschedules Queensland games impacted by cyclone Gold Coast’s AFL match against Essendon – postponed due to Cyclone Alfred – has been rescheduled to the final round of the home-and-away season. The AFL on Thursday announced the match, which had been set to take place this Saturday at People First Stadium, had been wedged into round 24, meaning the Suns and Bombers will close the season having to play two games just days apart. Gold Coast are scheduled to play Port Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval in round 24, while the Bombers meet Carlton at the MCG. The AFL is yet to lock in dates and times for any games in rounds 15 to 24 as part of the floating fixture. Gold Coast and Essendon could now end up playing each other during the week – days before their previously scheduled games – or even into the pre-finals bye window. “When looking at the rescheduling of these matches we had a focus on having the least amount of disruption on the competition, ensuring that all clubs still have a mid-season bye and managing travel arrangements across the season – particularly for the four impacted clubs,” AFL boss Andrew Dillon said. The Brisbane Lions, who were set to unveil their first premiership flag in 21 years on Thursday night, will instead host Geelong at the Gabba on March 29, starting at 6.35 pm local time. Brisbane and Geelong were due to have a bye in round three, creating an easier window to reschedule than the Suns and Bombers, who don’t have a break on the same weekend this season. The two Queensland teams trained on Wednesday, but all Lions and Suns players are now sheltering at home in anticipation of the wild weather to come. 14. The controversy behind California’s swastika-shaped building complex The controversy behind California’s swastika-shaped building complex SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A naval base in San Diego County has generated controversy for several decades for its exterior design — especially when viewed from above. Longtime San Diegans may already be familiar with the controversy surrounding the buildings on Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, which appear as four “L”s that together can resemble the shape of a swastika, a symbol associated with the Nazi Party. La Valencia Hotel makes 50 Best Discovery list The four buildings are barracks which are located between Bougainville, Eniwetok, Tulagi and Rio roads on the base. The base was established in 1943 after the dredging of San Diego Bay, which was done to allow large vessels to steam into Naval Station San Diego during World War II, according to the Navy’s website. The controversial barracks, or NAB Complex 320-325, were constructed in the ’60s, following a design submitted by architects William T. Hendrick and John R. Mock. Israeli citizen and former U.S. resident Avrahaum Segol found out about the shape in 2006 and helped publicize the controversy, hoping to get the design changed. In an article published by The New York Times in 2007, the Navy said the design of the buildings was unintentional and that it planned to spend $600,000 on landscaping and rooftop adjustments. An aerial view of the area on Google Maps shows, that as of 2025, the design has been unchanged. “You have to realize back in the ’60s, we did not have the Internet,” a spokesperson for the base told the Times in 2007. “We don’t want to be associated with the symbol.” The Navy even went public on its website with a statement regarding the buildings, saying it understands their configuration is a “sensitive topic.” The barracks underwent a $14.1 million repair project for three of the buildings. The money went toward fixing the bathrooms, tiling and plumbing as well as electrical systems and lighting, the Navy said. However, the swastika shape remained. “During the design development of this project, there was some consideration given to installing shade screens that might obfuscate any reference to a swastika shape,” the Navy said in its statement. “This concept was not pursued due to funding limitations for repair projects.” A theory echoed by some San Diegans, including on the blog Hidden San Diego, is that the two buildings southwest of the barracks were designed to depict bomber planes, flying toward the swastika in an effort to destroy it. 16. Dolphins give Woolf hope of avoiding Bennett curse Dolphins give Woolf hope of avoiding Bennett curse Kristian Woolf has seen enough from his Dolphins playing group to believe he can avoid the post-Wayne Bennett hangover that has plagued the master coach’s successors. A first game as a full-time NRL coach has been years in the making for Woolf, who leads the Dolphins against Bennett’s South Sydney in their relocated clash in Parramatta on Friday night. Woolf was Newcastle’s interim coach for two games in 2019 and filled in while then-Dolphins boss Bennett was ill for another stint in 2024. Woolf’s impressive resume also includes three consecutive Super League grand-final wins with St Helens and a berth in the Pacific Cup final with Tonga last year. But it has been Woolf’s players who have given the North Queenslander confidence he can avoid the “post-Bennett curse” that has plagued the NRL coaching guru’s previous successors. The likes of Ivan Henjak, Steve Price, Anthony Seibold and Jason Demetriou have all been fired inside two-and-a-half seasons of talking over from Bennett in the coach’s previous jobs. “I just like the work that we’ve done in the pre-season,” Woolf said when asked why things will be different for him. “Ask a lot of the blokes, we’ve worked hard, we’ve changed a couple of things, they’ve bought into all of that, they’ve bought into the hard work first and foremost. “They’ve shown me that there’s a real desire in this group to want to try and achieve something together.” Woolf has resisted temptation to reinvent the Dolphins, who welcomed only four new players into their top 30 roster for 2025. “I’ve been there the last two years as well so there’s a lot of things that we’re going to continue to do,” he said. “There’s a lot of things that Wayne set up that we were all a part of as well. “Every team’s trying to evolve. We’ve made some changes over the pre-season and I think most teams would say they’ve done the same thing.” The Dolphins have endured an atypical lead-up to Woolf’s first game in charge, which was shifted from Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium in preparation for Cyclone Alfred reaching land. The 17 will be without Kodi Nikorima and Mark Nicholls, who opted to remain behind in Queensland to support their loved ones. But Bennett won’t make the mistake of underestimating the Dolphins. “They’ll handle it,” he said on Thursday. “They got on the plane yesterday. There’ll be 17 guys that’ll be keen as any to play. “They’re a wonderful club. I was really proud of my time there with them, and they’ll do their best with whatever they put on the field.” The Rabbitohs face their own woes with personnel following a number of pre-season injuries. Star duo Cam Murray (Achilles) and Latrell Mitchell (hamstring) headline their injury list, joined by Alex Johnson (hamstring) and Euan Aitken (pectoral). With Lewis Dodd also out through suspension, Bennett is backing Jamie Humphreys to prove his case in the No.7 jersey. “I’m just expecting him to do his best. I don’t ask him for any more than that,” Bennett said. Source link #Dolphins #give #Woolf #hope #avoiding #Bennett #curse Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  19. Backlog helps accused anti-Israel vandal get bail Backlog helps accused anti-Israel vandal get bail One of the men allegedly behind a graffiti spree targeting the Jewish community has been granted bail in part due to a court backlog. Thomas Stojanovski, 20, has been behind bars since November 28, a week after an anti-Semitic vandalism spree in the Sydney suburb of Woollahra, home to a large Jewish community, on November 21. Four properties and 10 cars were sprayed with slogans such as “F*** Israel” and “PKK coming”, apparently referencing the Kurdistan Workers’ Party. The Woollahra incident came amid a spate of anti-Semitic incidents in Sydney and Melbourne, including razing of a synagogue, and a graffiti and fire-bombing attack on a prominent Jewish leader’s former home. Stojanovski was arrested after police found his fingerprints in a car allegedly left at the scene by the group behind the vandalism. His bail hearing was told he held a light while his accomplice sprayed hateful slogans. Stojanovski was granted bail this week after Supreme Court Justice Julia Lonergan accepted there was a real threat the time spent waiting for the case to conclude would exceed any potential minimum jail term. While the offences were serious and the crown case appeared strong, any potential jail term would need to take in a number of wide-ranging factors. “If I refuse bail today, Mr Stojanovski, who is entitled to the presumption of innocence, will be in custody bail refused for a ******* of between nine and (I estimate up to) 18 months waiting for sentence to be passed or trial,” the judge said on Wednesday, in a judgment published on Thursday. That was not to say it was the only factor. Justice Lonergan noted she would have no hesitation refusing bail if conditions were unable to address an unacceptable risk Mr Stojanovski “would go out and do this again, either alone or with others”. She also underlined the vandalism was a series of planned and focused hate crimes that made the community unsafe, and promoted fear and loathing of particular groups. “I am aware of the level of community shock and outrage arising from these crimes,” she said. But she said the risk of re-offending could be managed, and the 20-year-old’s first stint in custody has “no doubt been salutary”. He also faced orthopedic problems including a wrist fracture that required surgical attention. Stojanovski’s strict bail conditions require him to remain at home except in the company of a parent or when reporting each day to police. He must also abstain from alcohol and other non-prescription drugs and cannot enter Woollahra. 23. Seven injured after SK fighter jet accidentally drops bombs Seven injured after SK fighter jet accidentally drops bombs Seven people in South Korea were injured, four of them seriously, after a fighter jet accidentally dropped eight bombs in a civilian district during a live-fire military exercise. The incident involving the Air Force KF-16 aircraft took place at around 10:04 local time (01:04 GMT) in the city of Pocheon, near the border with North Korea. Only one bomb is believed to have exploded. A bomb disposal team is working on safely disposing the other seven unexploded bombs, Pocheon authorities told the BBC. They said residents living near the area have been evacuated. While shells from live firing exercises sometimes land near civilian residences, they rarely cause injuries. According to local media reports, two people suffered fractures to their necks and shoulders. A 60-year-old who was driving when the explosion happened had shrapnel lodged in their neck, Yonhap reported. “I was driving when I heard a ‘bang’,” they said. “When I woke up, I was in an ambulance.” “Our KF-16 (jet fighter) abnormally dropped 8 shells of MK-82 bombs. It landed outside of firing range,” said Korea’s Air Force in a statement to the BBC. It added that it was investigating the incident and apologised for the damage, adding it would provide compensation to those affected. One church building and houses were also damaged as a result of the incident. Images published on local media show a broken window of a building and damaged roof of the church. A local resident told Yonhap that he had been watching television at home when the explosion, which sounded “like a thunderclap”, shook the house. The director of a nearby senior citizen care centre said that the building’s windows shattered and one of their teachers was taken to hospital with injuries. While no seniors were hurt, they said, “they were so frightened that we sent them all home”. The defence ministry said the training on Thursday was related to a joint drill with US forces. South Korea and the US are set to run combined drills from March 10 to March 20 – the first since US president Donald Trump’s return to the White House. This comes at a time when the two countries are increasingly wary of the growing alliance between North Korea and Russia. During another joint drill by South Korea and the US in 2022, troops fired a short-range ballistic missile which malfunctioned and crashed on a golf course in the military base. While the warhead did not explode, it still burst into flames and sent panic rippling across residents in the area. 25. ‘I see hundreds of child sex abuse images a week for my job’ ‘I see hundreds of child sex abuse images a week for my job’ BBC Mabel says she tries to take down the worst child abuse images online to help make the internet safer At home she is a loving grandmother who enjoys spending time with her grandkids but at work Mabel has to watch the internet’s most “abhorrent” child sex abuse. She works for one of the few organisations licensed to actively search the internet for indecent content to help police and tech firms take the images down. The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) helped remove a record almost 300,000 web pages last year, including more artificial intelligence (AI) generated images than ever as the number of these types of images have increased almost fivefold. “The content is horrific, it shouldn’t ever have been created in the first place,” said Mabel, a former police officer. “You don’t ever become immune to it, because at the end of the day these are all child victims, it’s abhorrent.” Mabel – not her real name – is exposed to some of the most depraved and horrific images online and said her family were her main motivation for carrying out her analyst role. Mabel, originally from north Wales, calls herself a “disruptor” and said she likes obstructing criminal gangs who share abuse footage and images to make money. The foundation’s analysts are given anonymity so they feel safe and secure from those who object to their work, such as criminal gangs. “There’s not many jobs where you go to work in the morning and do good all day, and also irritate really bad people, so I get the best of both worlds,” said Mabel. “When I remove an image, I’m physically stopping the bad people accessing those images. “I have children and grandchildren and I just want to make the internet a safer place for them. “On a wider scale, we collaborate with law enforcement agencies all around the world so they can form an investigation and maybe put gangs to bay.” The IWF, based in Cambridge, is one of only three organisations in the world licensed to actively search for child abuse content online and last year helped take down 291,270 web pages which can contain thousands of image and videos. The foundation also said it helped take down almost five times more AI-generated child ******* abuse imagery this year than last, rising to 245 compared to 51 in 2023. The *** government last month announced four new laws to tackle images made with AI. Tamsin McNally feels the work of organisations like the Internet Watch Foundation are more important than ever The content is not easy for Tamsin McNally and her 30-strong team to see but she knows their work helps protect children. “We make a difference and that’s why I do it,” the team leader said. “On Monday morning I walked into the hotline and we had over 2,000 reports from members of the public stating that they had stumbled across this kind of imagery. We get hundreds of reports every single day. “I really hope everyone sees this is a problem and everybody does their bit to stop it happening in the first place. “I wish my job didn’t exist but as long as there are spaces online there will be the need for jobs like mine, sadly. “When I tell people what I do quite often people can’t believe this job exists in the first place. Then secondly they say, why would you want to do that?” Mabel has monthly counselling sessions and regular wellbeing support to help her cope with seeing some of the worst images online Many tech firm moderators have ongoing legal claims as employees claimed the work had destroyed their mental health – but the foundation said its duty of care was “gold standard”. Analysts at the charity have mandatory monthly counselling, weekly team meetings and regular wellbeing support. “There’s those formal things, but also informally – we’ve got a pool table, a huge connect four, jigsaw corner – I’m an avid jigsaw fan, where we can take a break if needed,” added Mabel. “All these things combined help to keep us all here.” The BBC spoke to staff at the Internet Watch Foundation on a visit to their offices on a quiet, tree-lined business park on the outskirts of Cambridge The IWF has strict guidelines making sure personal phones are not allowed in the office or that any work, including emails, are not taken out. Despite applying to work there, Manon – again, not her real name – was not sure if it was a job she could do. “I don’t even like watching horror films, so I was completely unsure whether I’d be able to do the job,” said Manon, who is in her early twenties and from south Wales. “But the support that you get is so intense and wide-ranging, it’s reassuring. “Every way you look at it, you’re making the internet a better place and I don’t think there are many jobs where you can do that every single day.” Manon says her university degree in linguistics has helped her in her role finding and removing indecent images online She studied linguistics at university, which included work around online language and grooming, and that piqued her interest in the work of the foundation. “Offenders can be described as their own community – and as part of that they have their own language or code that they use to hide in plain sight,” said Manon. “Being able to apply what I learnt at university to then put that into a real world scenario and be able to find child ******* abuse images and disrupt that community is really satisfying.” Source link #hundreds #child #sex #abuse #images #week #job Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
