The EV is expected to go into production in 2027 with a starting price of 20,000 euros ($21,500). A second EV called the ID.2all, which will be priced in the 25,000 euro price category, will be available in 2026. Both vehicles are part of the automaker’s new category of electric urban front-wheel-drive cars that are being developed under the “Brand Group Core” that makes up the volume brands in the VW Group. And both vehicles are for the European market. The EVERY1 will be the first to ship with Rivian’s vehicle architecture and software as part of a $5.8 billion joint venture struck last year between the ******* automaker and U.S. EV maker. The ID.2all is based on the E3 1.1 architecture and software developed by VW’s software unit Cariad. VW didn’t name Rivian in its reveal Wednesday, although there were numerous nods to next-generation software. Kai Grünitz, member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management responsible for technical development, noted it would be the first model in the entire VW Group to use a “fundamentally new, particularly powerful software architecture.” “This means the future entry-level Volkswagen can be equipped with new functions throughout its entire life cycle,” he said. “Even after purchase of a new car, the small Volkswagen can still be individually adapted to customer needs.” Sources who didn’t want to be named because they were not authorized to speak publicly confirmed to TechCrunch that Rivian’s software will be in the ID EVERY1 EV. TechCrunch has reached out to Rivian and VW and will update the article if the companies respond. The new joint venture provides Rivian with a needed influx of cash and the opportunity to diversify its business. Meanwhile, VW Group gains a next-generation electrical architecture and software for EVs that will help it better compete. Both companies have said that the joint venture, called Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies, will reduce development costs and help scale new technologies more quickly. The joint venture is a 50-50 partnership with co-CEOs. Rivian’s head of software, Wassym Bensaid, and Volkswagen Group’s chief technical engineer, Carsten Helbing, will lead the joint venture. The team will be based initially in Palo Alto, California. Three other sites are in development in North America and Europe, the companies have previously said. The concept vehicle reaches a top speed of 130 km/h (80 miles per hour) and is powered by a newly developed electric drive motor with 70 kW, according to Volkswagen. The ******* automaker said the range on the EVERY1 will be at least 250 kilometers (150 miles). The vehicle is small but larger than VW’s former UP! vehicle.     Midland woman admits to $430K fraud scheme Midland woman admits to $430K fraud scheme MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- A Midland woman has been arrested after authorities say she embezzled more than $430,000 from her longtime employer over the course of several years. 61-year-old, Bettye Brown Thiel, has been charged with Credit Card/Debit Card Abuse, a first-degree felony, and Theft of Property over $300,000, a first-degree felony. According to an arrest affidavit, on October 17, 2024, officers with the Midland Police Department responded to a report of financial fraud at the Midwest Door and Window Company. The company’s president told investigators that he had been alerted by Community National Bank to unusual transactions. Upon further review, he discovered multiple fraudulent checks written out to Thiel, the company’s bookkeeper since 2006. The checks, totaling over $423,000, appeared to be signed by the company’s assistant manager, but he later confirmed that his signature had been forged. When confronted, Thiel allegedly admitted to the fraud, stating, “I did it. I confess. I’m a really bad person,” according to witness statements included in the affidavit. She also reportedly told her employers that she had been a “scummy person” for the past 18 years. Following the admission, Thiel was immediately terminated from her position. During the investigation, Detectives with the Midland Police Department’s Financial Crimes Unit determined that Thiel had been manipulating financial records to conceal her actions. She allegedly altered bank reconciliations in QuickBooks to make it appear that payments were made to legitimate vendors while actually writing checks to herself. Additionally, she reportedly used the company’s credit card to make unauthorized purchases and later refunded the money to her personal bank account. Authorities subpoenaed financial records from Community National Bank and Capital One, revealing that Thiel had deposited fraudulent checks into her personal accounts. Investigators estimate that the total amount stolen between 2016 and 2024 was at least $430,179, though records prior to 2016 were unavailable. Thiel was arrested on March 3, 2025, by the Midland County Sheriff’s Office and booked into the Midland County Detention Center, where she remains with a $575,000 bond. QUINLAN, Texas – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has claimed an object that people from Quinlan say fell from the sky on Tuesday night. They are calling it an Air and Marine Operations (AMO) Tethered Aerostat Radar System (TARS). Border Protection claims balloon The TARS landed on a private ranch in Quinlan, Texas, which is in the southern part of Hunt County, east of Dallas. Witnesses told FOX 4 it looked like a very large tarp with a metal structure as “big as a truck.” Police and other officials on the scene told the witness it was a balloon, but wouldn’t give any other details. SKY 4 captured video of what appeared to be a crew at the scene. A crane was also on the scene. What we know In a news release on Wednesday afternoon, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said on March 3, at 3:15 p.m., South Padre Island experienced a severe wind event that caused the Air and Marine Operations Tethered Aerostat System to break free from its tether. The contact with the Aerostat was lost shortly after it broke free, officials stated. On March 4, the Aerostat System was found in Quinlan, Texas. The Quinlan Texas Fire and Rescue in Hunt County notified the CBP. Air and Marine Operations is currently working alongside federal, state, and local officials to investigate. Debris from the ****** was gathered by the Rayburn Electric Cooperative and is currently being stores in its warehouses in Rockwall. What is a Tethered Aerostat Radar System? U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Air and Marine Operations (AMO) uses the Tethered Aerostat Radar System (TARS) to provide long-range detection of low-altitude aircraft at the radar’s maximum range. TARS detects and tracks the majority of suspicious air traffic along the southwest border, including ultralight and short landing aircraft threats. The Department of Homeland Security requires this unique TARS capability in areas beyond the southwest border, including the Gulf, southern Atlantic and Pacific coastlines and extended regions throughout the Caribbean used by transnational criminal organizations for illicit smuggling of narcotics and people. From 2014 through 2020, TARS was responsible for detecting 68% of all suspected air smuggling flights approaching the southwest border from Mexico, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The TARS is around 200 feet long and is around 65 feet in diameter. The hull of the Aerostat contains two parts. The yield on the 10-year JGB rose nearly 8 basis points to cross 1.5% for the first time since 2009, while those on the 30-year bonds also climbed 13 basis points to cross the 2.5% mark for the first time since 2008. The JGB sell-off was in conjunction with upward pressure on global yields, said Masahiko Loo, senior fixed income strategist at State Street Global Advisors. U.S. 10-year treasury yield climbed 5 basis points to 4.317%. Comments from Bank of Japan Deputy Governor Shinichi Uchida also contributed to the sell-off. Uchida reportedly said the central bank was likely to “raise interest rates at a pace in line with dominant views among financial markets and economists.” Investors such as Japanese banks were staying on the sidelines with limited risk appetite prior to the end of the financial year in March, in addition to continued expectations of BOJ hiking cycle, said Loo. Last week, Uchida also reportedly said that the central bank would keep tapering its government bond purchases despite the recent rise in yields. As the central bank resorted to normalizing its ultra-loose monetary policy last year, it stated it would reduce purchases of JGBs by about 400 billion yen each calendar quarter.
