  1. Stellantis pledges more American cars, thanks Trump for one-month tariff exemption Stellantis pledges more American cars, thanks Trump for one-month tariff exemption MILAN (Reuters) – Automaker Stellantis said on Thursday it shared U.S. President Donald Trump’s goal of building more cars in the United States, as it thanked him for granting a one-month exemption from tariffs on Canada and Mexico. The White House on Wednesday said Trump would exempt automakers from his punishing 25% tariffs on the two countries for one month as long as they comply with existing free trade rules. “We share the President’s objective to build more American cars and create lasting American jobs. We look forward to working with him and his team,” Stellantis said in a statement. The company, which at the start of Trump’s presidency had announced investments at its U.S. operations, said in a note it strongly supported “his determination to enable the American automotive sector to thrive”. 6. Marco Rubio’s Face Tells the Story as Trump Humiliates Him in Congress Speech Marco Rubio’s Face Tells the Story as Trump Humiliates Him in Congress Speech Donald Trump singled out Secretary of State Marco Rubio as the person “to blame if anything goes wrong” during his speech to Congress—and Rubio’s shocked reaction was quickly spotted online. Trump made the jab as he spoke about trying to regain ownership of the Panama Canal, a move which would cause diplomatic shockwaves if it ever really happened. It was a public taste of the power Trump tries to hold over his cabinet, and came days after Rubio became a meme as he appeared to try to sink into the Oval Office coach as Trump and Vice President JD Vance berated Ukraine’s Volodomyr Zelensky. “The Panama Canal was built by Americans for Americans, not for others. But others could use it. But it was built at tremendous cost of American blood and treasure,” Trump said. “It was given away by the Carter administration for one dollar. But that agreement has been violated very severely. We didn’t give it to China, we gave it to Panama, and we’re taking it back.” “And we have Marco Rubio in charge. Good luck, Marco. Now we know who to blame if anything goes wrong,” Trump said, chuckling. Panama’s president has maintained that the canal is not for *****. Rubio’s reaction to Trump’s comments were swiftly noted by a number of users online, despite the 53-year-old’s praise of the president shortly after his speech. Rubio posted on X that the speech was “inspiring” and “momentous.” Trump “returned to the White House with a clear mandate from the American people to renew the American Dream,” he wrote. “His address tonight laid out exactly how he is keeping those promises with a vision of peace through strength, and a stronger, safer, and more prosperous United States.” (L-R) Cabinet members US Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent and Secretary of State Marco Rubio stand and applaud as US President Donald Trump speaks during an address to a joint session of Congress in the House Chamber of the US Capitol in Washington, DC, on March 4, 2025. / SAUL LOEB / AFP via Getty Images In his speech, Trump said Rubio “has been amazing and he’s going to do a great job.” “He has already proven he’s a great gentleman. 9. Big bank systems crashed for over 800 hours in last two years due to IT outages Big bank systems crashed for over 800 hours in last two years due to IT outages Nine of the ***’s biggest banks accumulated over 33 days of IT downtime over the last two years with millions of people affected. Data received from banks by MPs on the Treasury Committee revealed at least 158 banking IT failures between January 2023 and February 2025, equating to over 800 hours of service unavailability.. Following the recent three-day outage experienced by Barclays Bank customers, which began on payday at the end of January, MPs demanded answers from bank CEOs. Chief executives at Barclays, Santander, NatWest, Danske Bank ***, Nationwide Building Society, Allied Irish Bank, HSBC, Bank of Ireland and Lloyds Banking Group were asked for information on the scale and impact of IT failures over the past two years. The data does not include the recent Barclays ******, but the bank did provide MPs with details of the effect of the outage. It revealed that during the three-day incident 56% of online payments failed due to “severe degradation of mainframe processing performance,” according to the Treasury Committee. Barclays said it will pay between £5m and £7.5m to customers as a result of the outage and in total Barclays could pay out up to £12.5m in compensation due to outages over the two years in scope. The banks told MPs that systems and internal software malfunctions were common reasons for the IT failures. Meg Hillier MP, chair of the Treasury Committee, said for families “living pay cheque to pay cheque” banking downtime is “a terrifying experience”. “The fact there has been enough outages to fill a whole month within the last two years shows customers’ frustrations are completely valid. The reality is that this data shows even the most successful banks and building societies hit technical glitches. What’s critical is they react swiftly and ensure customers are kept informed throughout,” she added. Last month, Hillier said the closure of high street branches in favour of online banking means bank crashes hit customers harder. “The rapidly declining number of high street bank branches makes the impact of IT outages even more painful; that’s why I’ve decided to write to some of our biggest banks and building societies.” She thanked banks for their responses and was “reassured” they are taking action to minimise the impact of IT failures on customers. Barclays Bank reported the most incidents, 33, with Allied Irish Bank, HSBC and Santander next with 32 each. Nationwide Building Society reported 18 outages, NatWest 13 and Lloyds Bank 12. In single figures were Allied Irish bank (9), Danske (5), and Bank of Ireland (4). NatWest reported the most downtime at 194 hours, followed by HSBC with 176. Just last week a further payday outage hit banks including Lloyds Bank, Nationwide, TSB and Nationwide, according to outage monitoring organisation Downdetector. One senior banking IT professional said that if a number of banks experience problems at the same time, it points to a relating factor. “If it’s lots of banks, it makes me think there’s a common denominator, like they’re using a supplier or software that’s shared by multiple banks, because it would be coincidental for several of them to go down on the same day,” he said. Further pointing to a potential problem with external IT, the expert added that in his experience, banks try to avoid making IT changes at the end of the month. “End of the month is normally a time banks avoid making changes. For example, financing departments inside the banks do not like the risk of chaos at an unprecedented end of the month because they’re doing month-end accounting and don’t want technology problems.” Source link #Big #bank #systems #crashed #hours #years #due #outages Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Apple launches new MacBook Air models with latest M4 chip, cuts price Apple launches new MacBook Air models with latest M4 chip, cuts price (Reuters) -Apple on Wednesday unveiled new MacBook Air models with latest M4 chip and artificial-intelligence features at a price $100 lower than the previous generation, as the company looks to spur sales and persuade customers to upgrade their devices. The base version of the new series of laptops with the 13-inch screen will be priced at $999, while the 15-inch MacBook Air will start at $1,199. Pre-orders will begin on Wednesday and the devices will be available in-store from March 12. The introduction of AI-enabled personal computers is expected to drive a recovery in the PC market this year after a post-pandemic slump. Apple Intelligence is a set of features with access to ChatGPT that allows users to write emails, messages and edit photos among other capabilities. The suite of AI features debuted on Apple’s iPhone devices late last year, and the company has been rolling out the tools in various languages and regions to capture more users. Apple’s Mac sales were $8.99 billion in the holiday quarter, above analysts’ estimate of $7.96 billion, according to data complied by LSEG. Separately in the day, the company unveiled its M3 Ultra processor, which promises better performance than prior generations of Apple’s silicon. The new processor will be provided as an option on Apple’s new Mac Studio product, unveiled on Wednesday, enabling it to run large language models with more than 600 billion parameters within the computer. The new series of Mac Studio devices, aimed at AI developers, video and photo editors, will start at $1,999. 12. Russell 2000 Nears Critical Death Cross as Bearish Momentum Builds Russell 2000 Nears Critical Death Cross as Bearish Momentum Builds There was some modest buying today from the open, but volume was light and markets are below trading range support established during the latter part of 2024. It’s hard to see where the buyers are going to come from given the chaos of Trump. I should add, I listened to Josh Brown’s The Compound podcast and he showed an interesting chart of market returns in April-May in the year following a strong return in markets; in essence, selling to pay capital gains tax. Given the precarious nature of markets, and the possibility for this seasonal factor to play out, it’s likely we have a couple more months of downward action before value buyers return. If we look at individual markets, the () is looking like the first to signal a long term shift in favor of bears with an upcoming “Death Cross” between the 50-day MA and 200-day MA – perhaps completing before the end of the week. Technicals are net bearish and the volume trend has collapsed since the start of February. The has managed to hold 200-day MA support for a second day in a row. The trading range is still intact and it’s perhaps the most bullish of the indices. The is also showing net bearish technical strength but has at least managed to recover its 200-day MA. However, unlike the S&P 500, it’s trading outside of its prior range. Daily charts have reached a point of indecision, or at least a lack of interest to challenge nearest resistance. What happens Friday and the impacts on weekly timeframe charts will be of greater interest. The Russell 2000 has already cleared its rising channel, the S&P 500 is toying with its support, but the is still “okay”. Seven planets, along with the sun and the moon, align across the sky above Earth’s Mendip Hills in the U.K. An annotated version of the image can be found further down in the article. | Credit: Josh Dury A rare grouping of 10 celestial bodies is captured in a stunning new photo taken during last weekend’s great planetary parade. Astrophotographer Josh Dury took the photo you see above on Feb. 28, when seven planets — Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune — lined up on the same side of the sun. Dury photographed this rare cosmic event from the Mendip Hills, Somerset, U.K. The next time this s type of cosmic alignment should appear is the year 2040. In addition to the seven planets, however, Dury’s photo captures the moon and the sun from the vantage point of Earth, which lies in the foreground, for a total of 10 celestial bodies captured in one photograph. “The moon [was] the big contender,” Dury told Space.com in an email. “What made this photograph tricky was the inclusion of the sun, as well as Saturn and Neptune,” which appear much more faint in the night sky given they are furthest from Earth. “Some might say, they are not all visible at the same time — and you would be correct,” Dury said. “These images were captured over a 2.5 hour window to document all 10.” Dury used an ultra-wide angle lens to photograph different overlapping sections or “panes” of the landscape, which were then combined to create this panoramic view of the planets, moon and sun arching above Earth. Dury then used a HDR blending technique to capture the wide range of light seen in the images taken over the 2.5 hour window. Most of the seven planets have been visible in the night sky since January, with Mercury being the last planet to join the procession as it climbed to its highest point above the horizon. Using Mercury as a guide, Dury was able to gauge the relative positions of the other celestial bodies and took photos at multiple exposure levels to capture the light from both the brighter and dimmer planets. Annotated image of the seven planets, the sun and the moon aligned in the night sky above Earth in the foreground. | Credit: Josh Dury “The relative positions of the sun, Mercury, the moon and Venus will again be slightly out of alignment,” Dury explained. “This is due to the natural setting point of the sun on the horizon and planets’ visibility amongst its glare.” The photo also captures zodiacal light, which is a faint, white glow in the night sky that appears to extend from the sun. The clear night sky offered pristine views of sparkling stars and two bright galaxies, including the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) and Triangulum Galaxy (M33). “After March 2, it is a downward retreat for Saturn as it approaches the sun,” Dury told Space.com. “Making this 10 celestial body alignment a short-lived and potential once in a lifetime event; maybe even a world first dare I say it. I am so delighted the skies remained clear and to document this event from my homelands on the Mendips made it even more special.” Related Stories: — Astrophotographer captures ‘rare’ planetary parade as 7 planets align in the night sky (photo) — Earth shines over the moon in amazing 1st photos from private Blue Ghost lander. ‘We’re all in that picture.’ — US Space Force reveals 1st look at secretive X-37B space plane in orbit (photo) If you’re looking for a telescope or binoculars to observe the night sky, our guides for the best binoculars deals and the best telescope deals now can help. 20. Trump Hit With Devastating Poll Result After Bonkers Speech Trump Hit With Devastating Poll Result After Bonkers Speech Donald Trump’s laughable first address to Congress Tuesday night was his least popular ever, garnering one of the least enthusiastic reactions for a president’s first address to the chamber in the last two decades, according to a CNN poll, Apparently, only 44 percent of viewers had a very positive reaction to the president’s address. Twenty-five percent had a somewhat positive reaction, and 31 percent had a negative reaction. This is not only a low watermark when compared with the first addresses to Congress delivered by previous presidents, whose speeches are typically a victory lap to lay out their agenda, but it’s also a poor showing when compared to Trump’s previous addresses to Congress in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Former President Joe Biden received a very positive response from 51 percent of viewers on his first address to Congress, while Barack Obama received 68 percent, and George W. Brush received 66 percent. Trump’s first address during his first administration received a very positive reaction from 57 percent of viewers—a whopping 13 points higher than his very positive reactions now. And it wasn’t just Democrats who were saying this. CNN’s sample group of viewers was weighted to reflect that more people who agreed with Trump would likely be watching, and was made up of 21 percent Democrats, 44 percent Republicans, and 35 percent independents. Roughly seven in 10 speech watchers said they had a positive reaction to Trump’s address, according to the CNN poll. That number is slightly more in line with a CBS poll that Trump shared on Truth Social Wednesday morning, which found that 76 percent of viewers approved of Trump’s address, while 23 percent disapproved. They will be joined by five-time Brit Award winner Charli XCX – who will top the bill on the festival’s second stage on Saturday 28 June. There will also be debut Glastonbury performances by Alanis Morisette, Noah Kahan, Gracie Abrams, Lola Young and US rap phenomenon Doechii, who will headline the West Holts stage. Returning favourites include Wolf Alice, Wet Leg, Fatboy Slim, Loyle Carner and Scissor Sisters. Rock legend Neil Young has already been announced as the Saturday night headliner, with Rod Stewart playing the Sunday afternoon “legend slot”. The 1975 reach top of the billPA Media The 1975 have played Glastonbury several times, but this will be their first headline appearance Manchester band The 1975 are festival veterans, who have headlined the Reading and Leeds festival three times since 2016 – but this will be their first time at the top of Glastonbury’s line-up. Balancing hooky dance-rock with more experimental forays into electronica and even ambient music, they pepper their lyrics with references to online relationships, chemical dependency and wry, self-aware humour. Frontman Matty Healy is known for his provocative, and often divisive, actions. On their recent tour, he has been spotted chewing raw steak, berating security guards via Auto-Tune, and passionately kissing fans in the front row. More seriously, the band are being sued by organisers of a Malaysian festival, which was shut down after Healy kissed one of his bandmates on stage. The singer said he was protesting at the country’s anti-LGBT laws, under which *********** acts can be punished by 20 years in prison. Olivia’s rapid rise Olivia Rodrigo drew a huge audience for her Glastonbury debut in 2022 Rodrigo is the first Glastonbury headliner to have broken through in the 2020s – and the second-youngest headliner of all time, after Billie Eilish, who was 20 when she topped the bill in 2022. Like Eilish, the 22-year-old will play the Pyramid Stage with just two albums to her name, but she has a solid armoury of fist-pumping pop-punk singalongs (Good 4 U, Brutal, Get Him Back), alongside lighters-aloft ballads like Driver’s License and Vampire. An accomplished live performer, her 2024 Guts tour banked $186m (£144m) in ticket sales; and she will also headline the BST festival in London’s Hyde Park two days before Glastonbury. Rodrigo last played the festival in 2022, drawing a huge – and noticeably young – crowd to the Other Stage. During that performance, she brought out Lily Allen to perform the expletive-laden track F You, dedicating it to the US Supreme Court justices who had, a day earlier, ended the constitutional right to abortion in America. Charli’s next Brat summerReuters Charli XCX will bring Brat to Worthy Farm Rumours that Rihanna would play the Pyramid Stage turned out to be wishful thinking for the second year running. But Charli XCX will cement her position as one of the ***’s biggest pop stars with her set on the Other Stage. She returns to the festival after winning five Brit Awards for her deliberately trashy seventh album, Brat. Playing the Other Stage will release her from the requirement to tone down her set for audiences on BBC One, and indulge in the frenetic, hedonistic club sounds that made her name. It will also mark the latest step in a long journey through the festival’s smaller stages, starting at the Silver Hayes dance arena in 2014. “I was really ill and I forgot to wear a bra on stage, which was good!” she later told the BBC. “[Radio 1 DJ] Huw Stephens came on during the last song and told me I was singing live on the radio. I lost my voice and it was all a bit crazy, but it was fun.” Hopefully she’ll avoid the lurgy this summer. 23. Safer phones bill aimed at young teens watered down after minister opposition | Social media Safer phones bill aimed at young teens watered down after minister opposition | Social media A bill which campaigners hoped would ban addictive smartphone algorithms aimed at young teenagers has been watered down after opposition to tougher measures from the technology secretary, Peter Kyle, and the education secretary, Bridget Phillipson. The safer phones bill, a private member’s bill from Labour MP Josh MacAlister, will come to the Commons on Friday. It had heavyweight cross-party backing from MPs and a string of child protection charities but will now commit the government to researching the issue further rather than immediate change. The government will accept the new proposal, the Guardian understands. Government sources suggested that MacAlister’s original bill would not have received ministers’ backing – and would probably have been talked out or whipped against. They said more time was needed to research the impact of phones on teenagers and assess the evolving technologies that could restrict content developed by the phone companies themselves. Kyle is understood to be opposed to any major bill which would be the equivalent of a second Online Safety Act, which some campaigners want. A source close to Kyle said he was not in principle opposed to further government intervention on this specific issue but that work was at an early stage. The original proposal would have forced social media companies to exclude young teens from algorithms to make content less addictive for under-16s – raising the age of internet adulthood from 13 to 16. It would also have committed the government to a review of the ***** of phones to teens and whether additional technological safeguards should be on phones sold to under-16s. Both measures have been removed from the final bill. Another measure to ban mobile phones in schools had already been dropped after opposition by Phillipson, who is understood to believe schools should police themselves. One government source said they did not believe there should be criminal or civil penalties for phones being brought into school and it was unclear who would be liable for any breaches. One MP who had backed MacAlister’s bill said there was frustration at the lack of government will on the issue. “It’s effectively seen as a side issue,” the MP said. The health secretary, Wes Streeting, is seen as an outlier in cabinet on the need to do more on addictive smartphone use – and had publicly backed MacAlister’s bill. The new version of the private member’s bill will instruct the chief medical officer, Chris Whitty, to look at the health impact of smartphone use – giving Streeting’s department some new oversight on the issue. Last year the then US surgeon general, Vivek Murthy, said social media should have smoking-style health warning labels. MacAlister, the MP for Whitehaven and Workington, told the Guardian the bill was a first step in government taking the issue of addictive smartphone use seriously, rather than focusing just on harmful or ******** content. “It will be the first meaningful step from a *** government to engage with the widespread impacts of excessive smartphone and social media use by children,” he said. MacAlister will present his bill to the Commons on Friday, where MPs will debate it. If ministers then commit to take the new measures forward, as expected, MacAlister will not push the bill to a vote. It will now say that the government must “publish a plan for research into the impact of use of social media on children” and ask the ***’s chief medical officers to prepare advice for parents on the use of smartphones and social media by children. Polling suggests measures to limit their use by young people are extremely popular. More in Common found last month 74% wanted social media banned for under-16s. 25. ‘Trump Gaza’ AI video intended as political satire, says creator | Artificial intelligence (AI) ‘Trump Gaza’ AI video intended as political satire, says creator | Artificial intelligence (AI) The creator of the viral “Trump Gaza” AI-generated video depicting the Gaza Strip as a Dubai-style paradise has said it was intended as a political satire of Trump’s “megalomaniac idea”. The video – posted by Trump on his Truth Social account last week – depicts a family emerging from the wreckage of war-torn Gaza into a beachside resort town lined with skyscrapers. Trump is seen sipping cocktails with a topless Benjamin Netanyahu on sun loungers, while Elon Musk tears flatbread into dips. The video first emerged in February, shortly after Trump unveiled his property development plan for Gaza, under which he said he wants to “clean out” the population of about 2 million people to create the “Riviera of the Middle East”. Trump then posted the clip without any explanation on his Truth Social platform on 26 February. Solo Avital, an LA-based film-maker, said he created the video in less than eight hours while experimenting with AI tools in early February, and that its spread had “surprised the hell out of me”. “We are storytellers, we’re not provocateurs, we sometimes do satire pieces such as this one was supposed to be. This is the duality of the satire: it depends what context you bring to it to make the punchline or the joke. Here there was no context and it was posted without our consent or knowledge,” he added. Avital, who is a US citizen born in Israel, and his business partner, Ariel Vromen – director of the 2012 film The Iceman, starring Michael Shannon, Winona Ryder and Chris Evans – run EyeMix, a visuals company where they produce documentaries and commercials. Avital said he was experimenting with the Arcana AI platform, and decided to create “satire about this megalomaniac idea about putting statues [in Gaza]” to see what the tool could do. He had shared the video clip with friends, while his business partner posted it on his popular Instagram for a few hours, before Avital encouraged him to take it down on the grounds “it might be a little insensitive and we don’t want to take sides”. The pair shared an early version with Mel Gibson, who Trump named as a special ambassador to Hollywood in January and who has previously collaborated with EyeMix and Arcana. Gibson told them he shared another video about the LA fires with people close to Trump, but denied sharing the Gaza video with the president, the creators said. The first Avital knew that the video had reached a wider audience was when he awoke to thousands of messages on his phone, as friends alerted him to Trump’s post. Avital said he was surprised by some of the reactions to the video. “If it was the skit for Saturday Night Live the whole perception of this in the media would be the opposite – look how wild this president is and his ideas, everyone would think it’s a joke.” He said the experience had reinforced for him “how fake news spreads when every network takes what they want and shoves it down their viewers with their narratives attached”. He hoped this experience would “spark a public debate about rights and wrongs” of generative AI, including what the rights of creators are. However, as a creative industries professional, he said he generally welcomed AI, saying it is “the best thing that’s happened to creativity by a long shot. Everyone who thinks it will kill creativity, we’re proof to the contrary. This film wouldn’t have been created without human intervention.” Hany Farid, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, who specialises in identifying deepfakes, said this was “not the first time and won’t be the last time” that AI-generated clips about news events would go viral. He noted there had been a flurry of content created around the LA wildfires, including a video of a burnt Oscars trophy. He said Avital’s experience should make people realise “there’s no such thing as ‘I just shared with a friend’. You make something, assume you don’t have control.” He added the fact the video was intended as political satire but repurposed as “very compelling, visceral” propaganda by Trump highlighted the risk of AI-generated video. “It allows individuals without a lot of time, money and, frankly, skill you would normally need, to generate some pretty eye-popping content. That is really cool, you can’t argue,” he said. But there is a dark side to this new capability: “This tech is being used to create child ******* abuse material, non-consensual intimate imagery, hoaxes, conspiracies, lies that are dangerous to democracies.” Although this video is obviously computer-generated, since videos are typically not hyper-realistic, he warned: “it’s coming”. “What happens when you get to a point where every video, audio, everything you read and see online can be fake? Where’s our shared sense of reality?” He believes AI platforms have a responsibility to “put guardrails” on this technology, to prevent it from being misused. “Lots are following this model of ‘move fast and break things’, and they’re breaking things again. We could forgive this mindset at the dawn of the modern internet, nobody is looking at this thinking we need more of this, more Elon Musk, more Mark Zuckerberg.” Source link #Trump #Gaza #video #intended #political #satire #creator #Artificial #intelligence Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
