But high health care costs eat into our budget — how can we survive at least 20 more years? If you and your partner are in your 60s and have $70,000 in savings, you don’t have a ton of money set aside for retirement. The good thing is, you do have Social Security, so if you have a $3,780 monthly benefit, you at least have some income you can count on. Plus, some retirees even make it work with Social Security alone. In 2024, The Senior Citizens League found that 27% of seniors rely on Social Security for 100% of their income. Unfortunately, seniors face many big costs — and health care is often one of the biggest. Spending on medical care alone could take up a huge portion of your Social Security benefit, so it’s not a surprise you’re worried about how you can cover your care. Fortunately, you may have some options available to you. Here’s what you need to know to try and ensure your retirement money lasts. If you have a nest egg of $70,000, your savings will provide you with only around $2,800 in income per year. That’s because you’ll likely maintain a safe withdrawal rate to avoid emptying your accounts — and most experts say that means capping spending at around 4% of your account balance in year one and making annual adjustments for inflation. When combined with your $3,780 per month Social Security benefit, you’ll have around $48,160 per year in income from your savings and Social Security. Unfortunately, data from the Federal Reserve reveal average expenditures on health care among those 65 and over total more than $8,000 per year. Fidelity also found a 65-year-old retiring in 2024 needs around $165,000 saved to cover all of their out-of-pocket costs throughout retirement, while the Center for Retirement Research warns that only 75% of Social Security benefits remain after paying premiums and out-of-pocket costs for the median retiree. All of these numbers paint a troubling picture given that you most likely can’t easily afford to spend upwards of 15% of your income just on medical costs — depending on which estimate you use. MedlinePlus suggests some of the following ways to do that: Shopping carefully for a Medicare Advantage or Medigap plan to reduce out-of-pocket costs associated with traditional Medicare. While you must pay premiums for these plans, it can be cheaper to buy them than to pay for all coinsurance costs and things Medicare doesn’t cover. Asking your care provider to switch to generic medicines to keep costs down. Getting routine health care screenings and focusing on preventative care to prevent small health problems from turning into major health issues. Seeking charity care at non-profit hospitals. Looking into financial assistance programs that help seniors cover medical and food costs and arrange transportation to doctor visits. If you are unable to reduce your costs, you can also look at ways to increase your retirement income or cut other spending. For example, you could work part-time to bring in extra income, downsize your home and invest any extra funds you get out of your equity, or move to an area with a lower cost of living so you have more money to devote to medical care. The Mountain View-based tech giant was reportedly internally testing this feature last month, and has now rolled it out to a limited number of users. The AI Mode will offer responses on complex topics, and search queries that are multi-faceted and would normally take a user multiple searches to find the information. Additionally, the company is also upgrading AI Overviews with the Gemini 2.0 model. The new version of the feature is currently only available in the US. Google Search Gets AI Mode In a blog post, the tech giant detailed the new AI Mode for Google Search. This new interface is said to offer “more advanced reasoning, thinking and multimodal capabilities,” and will act as an expansion to the existing AI Overviews. Currently, the AI Mode is available to select users via Google Labs as an early experiment. The company also said that it will begin inviting Google One AI Premium subscribers to try out the experience in Labs. There is no word on if or when it will roll out to regular Google Search users. After opting in for the AI Mode experience, eligible users will see the feature as a filter on the search results page. AI Mode is placed in the first position, followed by All, Images, News, Maps, and more. So, after a user runs a search query normally on Google, they will be able to switch to the new mode by tapping the filter. Google said that the AI Mode is powered by a custom Gemini 2.0 model and is useful for queries that require deeper exploration, comparisons, or reasoning. It allows users to ask follow-up questions, and shows multimodal results including images, tables, and more. It also lists websites that can help the user get additional information. The AI tool uses a “query fan-out” technique to run multiple related searches simultaneously across sub-topics, and looks through several data sources to provide a comprehensive result in an “easy-to-understand format,” the company said. Some of the data sources used by the AI Mode include web content, knowledge graph, shopping data, and general information about the real world. As per the company, AI Mode is equipped with novel approaches to improve the factuality of the responses. However, Google acknowledged that there is a possibility that some responses could reflect a particular opinion. Those with access to the feature can provide feedback and help the company improve the tool. Additionally, the tech giant highlighted that AI Mode will only show web search results in areas where it does not have a high confidence in helpfulness and quality. AI Overviews Upgraded With New AI Model Google is also updating its AI Overviews feature in Search, which offers a snapshot summary of search results. It will now be powered by Gemini 2.0, and can now answer more complex questions around coding, advanced mathematics, as well as multimodal queries. This new version of AI Overviews is currently available in the US. Additionally, the company is also expanding the product to more users. AI Overviews will also be available to teenagers (using a teen account). These AI-generated summaries will also show up for users who are not signed into their Google accounts. The tornado touched down near Porter Ridge High School around 8:35 a.m. and blew the school tennis court fence over, according to an NWS public information statement. No injuries were reported. The school is on Ridge Road in Indian Trail, about 23 miles southeast of Charlotte. Two nearby storage buildings collapsed before the twister crossed Ridge Road and heavily damaged a house under construction, the NWS team found. Air rushed into the house through openings in windows and the garage door and lifted off part of the roof, meteorologists said. Numerous trees were uprooted or snapped along Friendship ******** Church Road before the tornado caused minor damage to a home in the Benton Acres neighborhood, according to the NWS. The tornado reached Lawyers Road just west of U.S. 601, snapping several hundred yards of wood power poles but sparing adjacent homes, which were not damaged. The NWS said the tornado traveled 2.24 miles before dissipating. Aluminum siding is tangled with wooden fencing after severe wind passed through the Friendly ******** Church area in Union County on Wednesday. The county’s Emergency Operations Center opened to respond to the storm’s impact. The severe weather caused 1,700 power outages in Union County, officials said. The storms prompted the NWS to issue a tornado watch Wednesday for Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Union and Rowan counties, as well as Rock Hill and other parts of Upstate South Carolina. Mecklenburg, Cabarrus and Union counties are under a tornado watch until 1 p.m. Wednesday as severe storms with strong winds and heavy rain batter the region. The NWS lifted the watch around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, though, as the line of storms moved east of the area. NWS had warned that gusts up to 70 mph were likely, and hail up to a half-inch. A couple of tornadoes were possible, according to the NWS. A tornado watch means conditions are ripe for tornadoes to form, while a tornado warning means a twister has been spotted by weather radar. Heavy rains caused wrecks across the region, including one that closed lanes on Interstate 85 in the Belmont area and northbound between University City Boulevard and W.T.
