China, Russia ‘very likely’ to use AI to try and disrupt next election: CSE – National China, Russia ‘very likely’ to use AI to try and disrupt next election: CSE – National China, Russia and Iran will “very likely” use artificial intelligence to try and disrupt Canada’s next federal election, a new assessment from the Communications Security Establishment Canada says, but are unlikely to undermine the overall integrity of the vote. The annual report on cyber threats to ********* democracy, released Thursday, said cybercriminals linked to those countries will most likely use generative AI tools and methods like deepfakes to spread disinformation “designed to sow division among Canadians and push narratives conducive to the interests of foreign states.” ********* politicians and political parties will likely be targeted with phishing scams and hack-and-leak operations to further sow discord, the report said. “We assess that the PRC, Russia, and Iran will very likely use AI-enabled tools to attempt to interfere with Canada’s democratic process before and during the 2025 election,” the report from the CSE and its ********* Centre for Cyber Security says, using the acronym for the People’s Republic of China. Story continues below advertisement “However, we assess it very unlikely that hostile actors will carry out a destructive cyber attack against election infrastructure, such as attempting to paralyze telecommunications systems on election day, outside of imminent or direct armed conflict.” 2:22 Artificial Intelligence could threaten elections. What is Ottawa doing to regulate it? The report also underscores the “heightened risk” ********* public figures, particularly women and LGBTQ2+ people, face from deepfake ************. Such content can deter people from running for political office, and will continue to grow unabated without proper regulations, it warns. “Further, we assess it likely that, on at least one occasion, that content was seeded to deliberately sabotage the campaign of a candidate running for office,” the report says. Get breaking National news For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen. The final report from the federal public inquiry into foreign interference released last month said disinformation represents the greatest threat to ********* democracy. It said the rise of artificial intelligence was behind that assessment. Story continues below advertisement The CSE report said improvements in quality, affordability and accessibility of generative AI technology has enabled a rise in the use of those tools to target elections worldwide. The agency said more than a quarter of all elections between 2o23 and 2024 saw interference and influence attempts using AI, compared to just one identified in the previous two years. It pointed to multiple cyber-related incidents during last year’s U.S. presidential election, including AI deepfakes of candidates and the hack of U.S. President Donald Trump’s campaign by Iran-backed actors, as notable examples. 1:01 Blinken warns risks of disinformation, falsehoods over U.S. election The agencies said China and Russia were behind most attributable AI-enabled campaigns against elections around the world in the last two years — while noting they were unable to attribute a majority of those campaigns to specific actors — and will continue to be in the future. Story continues below advertisement Deepfakes and material generated by foreign actors are typically amplified by “witting or unwitting actors from within the targeted state,” it said, noting such foreign-generated material does not gain much traction on its own. Trending Now Trump’s trade war will last for ‘foreseeable future,’ Trudeau says Trump delays tariffs on some goods from Canada, Mexico for 1 month “CSE stands ready to conduct foreign cyber operations to defend our country against hostile threats, if needed. At the same time, Canadians can help safeguard democracy by thinking critically about the information they see online,” CSE chief Caroline Xavier said in a statement accompanying the report. At the same time, the agency said AI is also being used to help foreign states more quickly analyze data collected from targeted systems through mass hacking operations. “Nation states, in particular the PRC, are undertaking massive data collection campaigns, collecting billions of data points on democratic politicians, public figures, and citizens around the world,” the report said. “Advances in predictive AI allow human analysts to quickly query and analyze these data. We assess it likely that such states are gaining an improved understanding of democratic political environments as a result,” it added, and are “almost certainly enhancing their capabilities to conduct targeted influence and espionage campaigns.” A threat bulletin released Monday by the ********* Centre for Cyber Security warned China-sponsored cyber actors were targeting all levels of ********* government, including federal, provincial, municipal and Indigenous institutions. 1:58 Microsoft report finds China, North Korea ‘likely’ to try to interfere in U.S. elections It noted federal government agencies had been compromised by PRC cyber threat actors more than 20 times over the past few years, and warned of “near-constant reconnaissance” activity by China against ********* government systems. Story continues below advertisement “Taken together, PRC cyber actors have both the volume of resources and the sophistication to pursue multiple government targets in Canada simultaneously,” the bulletin said. The foreign interference inquiry came after Global News and other media outlets reported on repeated alleged attempts by actors like China to meddle in ********* elections and democratic institutions. The final report confirmed that multiple alleged interference attempts did indeed occur. The government has launched new measures since then to monitor and alert the public about foreign interference attempts, including a task force that oversees elections for threats. Last month, Chrystia Freeland’s Liberal leadership campaign was warned of a ********-sponsored disinformation campaign spreading false news articles about her on WhatsApp. More on Science and Tech More videos © 2025 Global News, a division of Corus Entertainment Inc. San Diego’s Five-Star Stay Fairmont Grand Del Mar Debuts New Patio Fireside Rooms San Diego’s Five-Star Stay Fairmont Grand Del Mar Debuts New Patio Fireside Rooms With its estate-like grounds and 1920s Spanish Revival style architecture – not to mention Forbes Four-Star and AAA Five-Diamond ratings, plus a three Michelin-starred restaurant – Fairmont Grand Del Mar is regarded as one of San Diego’s most prestigious hotels. Set on 400 acres of unspoiled coastal canyon just minutes from the Pacific Ocean in tony Carmel Valley, it’s a serene and coveted escape for well-heeled locals and visitors alike. Seamlessly integrated within its pastorale surroundings, Spanish and Moroccan design influences, including the rose-toned stucco façade and red-tiled roofs, complement the natural hues of the canyon and, despite its sprawling footprint, make the resort feel more like an extension of the land. The reimagined lobby lounge & guest library by LA design firm, Bishop Pass As part of an ongoing but subtle renovation project, a reimagined lobby lounge and bar (don’t miss the Southern California-inspired afternoon tea service and live entertainment here on weekends), plus a cozy guest library (which features a selection of books courtesy of Warwick Bookstore) led by Los Angeles-based design firm Bishop Pass, debuted last summer, but the latest noteworthy enhancement is the resort’s brand-new room category. Check into a Fireside Patio Room Rooms & suites feature glamorous Old-world decor From European-style marble bathrooms with deep soaking tubs, pillow top beds and goose-down pillows to the Old-world luxury decor (think brocade upholstery, gilded mirrors and cherry wood poster beds), rooms and suites at The Fairmont Grand Del Mar are luxe affairs. They’re spacious, too, and range in size from 500-square-foot guest rooms to 5,000-square-foot villas. Among its recent renovations, the five-star property recently unveiled a new (and already popular) room category with patios overlooking the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. Fireside patio rooms (nightly rates from around $700) feature well-designed outdoor spaces with panoramic canyon views and cozy firepits on their private patios – perfect for enjoying coffee in the morning (you’ll find a Nespresso machine above the mini bar although room service is always a good idea) or a glass of wine in the evening (a bottle of wine is included as an amenity when booking this room category). Private outdoor social spaces are a Fireside Patio Room highlight From Hiking & Horseback Rides to Championship Golf Once settled, there’s little reason to leave the property – although borrowing an E-bike to explore the grounds or ride down the road to nearby Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is an attractive option. But mostly look forward to spending time beside one of four heated outdoor pools (one of which is geared towards families) and teeing off at the award-winning Tom Fazio-designed golf course. Perhaps also take your pick from an impressive roster of complimentary daily guest activities spanning guided canyon hikes (the resort connects to 37 miles of trails in the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve) and mediation sessions to archery classes, pickleball clinics and a chance to “meet the horses” at the resort’s equestrian center, all laid out in an easy to reference printed monthly guide. In 2023, the property unveiled two new outdoor social spaces one of which is Grand Social. Set across three levels, including a lovely lawn area dotted with full-service fire pit tables and private cabanas, which can be reserved online, where you can catch live music on weekends and play lawn games like bocce while enjoying cocktails and light bites. Slim Aarons’ style poolside glamor at Fairmont Grand Del Mar Also relatively new are two dedicated pickleball courts and one padel court (the fastest growing sport in the world with over 25 million players across 110 countries) at The Fairmont Grand Del Mar Racquet Sport Center. A favorite among wellness devotees, The Center for Wellbeing at Fairmont Grand Del Mar has also undergone extensive renovations and the Forbes Five-Star spa is expected to reopen by late April with updated treatment rooms, massage tables, and wet areas among other enhancements. Its Spa Boutique (one of four retail stores on the property) is open, though, and stocked with athleisure favorites including Vuori and Lululemon, the spa’s own signature collection (try the coastal sage oil), plus tasteful Grand Gifts, including a chic signature candle and woven horseshoe tote. Standout Culinary Experiences – Including Three Michelin Stars A French brasserie-inspired dining experience at Amaya From grab-and-go items at Cent’Anni Café to pre-round snacks or a laid-back lunch at The Clubhouse Grill, there are a variety of dining experiences to suit all tastes at Fairmont Grand Del Mar. While San Diego’s only three-starred Michelin restaurant, Addison by William Bradley, whose ten-course tasting menu (from $385 per person) is considered the pinnacle of fine dining and a jewel in the hotel’s culinary crown, French brasserie-inspired dining experience Amaya is something of a standout too. It’s helmed by Executive Chef Bryn McArthur (who most recently held the title of Chef de Cuisine at The Savoy in London) and Chef Roman Garcia (previously at Selby’s in Atherton, California), and the menu features a twist on classic French cuisine. There’s a nightly happy hour from 5 to 6 p.m. during warmer months, makea beeline for the shaded terrace, which overlooks the Aria Lawn, but on cooler evenings, post up in a booth or Amaya’s adjacent bar. Must-orders from the dinner menu include the oh-so-delicate Tuna à la Basques, baby lettuce salad, and fresh-baked brioche bread (sweetened with honey from Grand Del Mar’s on-site bee hives) to start, followed by the jidori chicken Coq au Vin or Bouillabaisse composed with local striped bass and flown in fresh Hokkaido scallops. For a side, the pommes mousseline are silky, decadent and delicious. Just don’t expect to have room for dessert. Visit granddelmar.com for more information. Ontario woman seizure-free after getting pioneering skull implant Ontario woman seizure-free after getting pioneering skull implant After experiencing seizures every other week, Christine Kauzen has been seizure-free for months since receiving one of the first rare treatments of its kind in Canada — a neurostimulation device surgically implanted into her skull. The 26-year-old, who lives in London, Ont., was diagnosed with epilepsy in 2020 after a series of what were initially believed to be panic attacks, which progressively became more severe. Kauzen had seizures that could last up to three days at a time. “I had a convulsion seizure in October 2020 and was taken to hospital by ambulance. It was determined I had epilepsy; a specific kind that affects both my temporal lobes, meaning it was more difficult to diagnose because of how they presented,” Kauzen said. “Immediately my life changed.” Kauzen’s seizures began to take over her life, causing severe memory loss and forcing her to leave college and work. They manifested as episodes of loss of awareness, feelings of disconnection, déjà vu, confusion, heart palpitations and even the sensation of being watched. Story continues below advertisement “My seizures were happening every other week for a ******* of three days at a time, and sometimes it was even more frequent. This would reset my memory every single time and I would lose memory of the days I had seizures and those leading up to them,” she said. “It kind of followed a pattern — usually happening on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays — and I have no idea why,” she said. The seizures often came in clusters, with about five to ten a day. After each episode, she needed a full day to recover, as they completely drained her. Dr. David Steven (left) with Christine Kauzen (right). London Health Sciences Centre Kauzen is one of 260,000 Canadians living with epilepsy, a neurological disorder of the central nervous system that affects the brain and is characterized by recurrent seizures, according to the ********* Epilepsy Alliance. Get weekly health news Receive the latest medical news and health information delivered to you every Sunday. Seventy per cent of people with epilepsy can gain seizure freedom with medication alone, but the remaining have drug-resistant epilepsy. Kauzen was the latter. Story continues below advertisement Kauzen did not respond to medication and, because both her temporal lobes were causing the seizures, surgical removal was also not an option. With limited treatment options, Dr. David Steven, a neurosurgeon at London Health Sciences Centre, recommended surgically implanting a Responsive Neurostimulation (RNS) device into Kauzen’s skull to help manage her seizures. “You can think of it like a pacemaker for the brain. Two electrodes are implanted in a specific part of the brain. And then those electrodes measure electrical activity and can detect if a seizure is happening,” he said. “They are attached to a mini little computer that’s embedded in the skull. And then that computer makes a decision as to whether the patient is having a seizure or not. If it detects seizure activity, it can deliver an impulse very similar to a heart pacemaker and hopefully prevent the patient from having a seizure,” Steven explained. 1:58 Epilepsy patient now works in the unit where she was treated The challenge with this device is that it is not approved for use in Canada, although it is available in the United States. This is because the company has not yet sought approval from Health Canada, Steven said, adding that he hopes this will change in the near future. Trending Now ‘Not going back’: Ford will cancel Starlink-Ontario deal even if tariffs are lifted What’s behind Trump’s many grievances with Canada? Story continues below advertisement “It’s been available for a while in the United States. So that’s the issue, is that getting it available in Canada has been a struggle. And up until recently, we’ve been having most of our patients who we’ve recommended for this device have their procedure done down in the U.S. And for us, that’s been Detroit,” he said. But in Kauzen’s case, Steven and his team advocated for this treatment and applied through Health Canada’s Special Access Program. She was approved and Kauzen because one of the first patients in Canada to receive this device. When Kauzen heard about the procedure she said she was looking forward to it, and that she needed to start planning for her future. “I was scared, definitely being that it was going to be one of the first in Canada, but I needed a plan for my future. I can’t keep taking medications that aren’t going to work,” she said. She underwent the RNS procedure in July 2024. Image of Christine Kauzen after the surgery. London Health Sciences Centre The surgery was a success, Kauzen said. Aside from some initial pain, she has only experienced one seizure since the procedure, which was a brief loss of awareness seizure that occurred in the hospital after surgery. Story continues below advertisement Other than that, she has remained seizure-free. “I very much got my life back. I am planning things for my future, whereas before I would have never actually made plans, even for a couple of weeks at a time. It just wasn’t worth it because I knew I would have seizures and I would be too afraid of losing my memory,” she said. “And now I’m actually making plans to go and have fun.” Steven said he couldn’t be happier with Kauzen’s recovery. He added that the next step is for surgeons and neurologists involved in the process to work with the company to secure Health Canada approval. “That would be a big step forward. And then we could speak again about getting funding from the government, but the first step is to get it approved in Canada,” he said. Jackbox Games Will Soon Be Playable On Smart TVs For Free
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Jackbox Games Will Soon Be Playable On Smart TVs For Free Jackbox Games Will Soon Be Playable On Smart TVs For Free Jackbox Games has been around in multiple incarnations over the past three decades thanks to its addictive party games, including You Don’t Know Jack. Now, Jackbox’s library of gaming titles is making the leap to smart TVs, courtesy of the new Jackbox app. Via Jackbox Games’ official site, the company announced that the app is a result of a partnership with Amazon Web Services GameLift Streams, which will utilize the cloud to launch Jackbox’s titles on smart TVs and other platforms. While the announcement doesn’t mention any specific titles that will be included, it does note that the Jackbox app “will offer a small collection of ad-supported games for free.” The company indicated that it plans to eventually offer the full catalogue of Jackbox Games titles as a subscription service, but didn’t offer any hints as to how much that would cost or when it might come to fruition. Jackbox also suggested that the app could be headed to additional platforms if it gets a favorable response. Jackbox also jokingly mentioned that the app could theoretically be used on a smartwatch before adding that “gathering around your watch for a game of Fibbage is super-dumb.” The Jackbox app beta is expected to be available on smart TV platforms this spring. One of the most recent Jackbox releases was The Jackbox Survey Scramble, an updated take on Family Feud. Like its spiritual predecessor, The Jackbox Survey Scramble uses real surveys to come up with some off-the-wall responses that players attempt to guess. It seems like this game could be ideal for the Jackbox app, especially if the service can support online multiplayer. But for now, we can only guess about which titles will debut on the app first. Premier League: Luke Humphries hits nine-darter but beaten by Rob Cross in Brighton Premier League: Luke Humphries hits nine-darter but beaten by Rob Cross in Brighton Premier League Darts is played across 16 initial weeks in the league stage with quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final each night. Each of the eight players is guaranteed to face the other seven in the quarter-finals in weeks 1-7 and 9-15, with weeks 8 and 16’s fixtures done off the table. It means we will get fourth v fifth in Sheffield on the final league-stage night, with the play-off spots potentially on the line. Players earn two points per quarter-final win, an additional point if they win their semi-final and five for winning the night. Monarch butterfly numbers wintering in Mexico rebound Monarch butterfly numbers wintering in Mexico rebound The number of monarch butterflies wintering in the mountains west of Mexico City have rebounded, doubling the area they covered in 2024 despite the stresses of climate change, experts say. The annual butterfly count doesn’t calculate the individual number of butterflies, but rather the area they cover as they gather on tree branches in the mountain pine and fir forests. Monarchs from east of the Rocky Mountains in the United States and Canada overwinter there. Mexico’s Commission for National Protected Areas (CONANP) said that this year, butterflies covered 4.4 acres (1.79 hectares) compared to only 2.2 acres (0.9 hectares) the year before. Last year’s figure represented a 59 per cent drop from 2023, the second lowest level since record keeping began. After wintering in Mexico, the butterflies fly north, breeding multiple generations along the way for thousands of kilometres. The offspring that reach southern Canada begin the trip back to Mexico at the end of summer. Gloria Tavera Alonso, the ******** agency’s director general of conservation, said the improved numbers owed to better climatic factors and humidity. Drought along the butterflies’ migratory route had been listed as a factor in last year’s decline. Tavera also credited ongoing efforts to increase the number of plants the butterflies rely on for sustenance and reproduction along their flyway. Jackbox’s party game library is coming to your living room via a new smart TV app Jackbox’s party game library is coming to your living room via a new smart TV app Jackbox Games, the studio behind such party titles as You Don’t Know Jack and Fibbage, is bringing its library of games to smart TVs. The studio is teaming up with Amazon to release a dedicated Jackbox Games app for smart TVs, enabling players to take part without a console or PC. The app, which Jackbox says will also be coming “to other platforms”, will initially launch in a beta version on “one or two smart TV platforms” this spring, with more platforms to follow. Initially, the app will offer a “small collection” of games which will be free to play and supported with ads. Eventually, however, Jackbox plans to add its entire catalogue of games to the app, offering a paid subscription service (with no ads, of course). “It has always been our goal to bring these games to as many people as possible and make them as easy to play as we can,” a statement from the studio reads. “That is why we are announcing a new Jackbox app that will allow you to play Jackbox Games on your smart TV and other platforms. “How can we pull off such a technical miracle? The same way anyone does anything these days – the Cloud! Partnering with AWS GameLift Streams allows us to quickly launch and stream games to all sorts of devices from smart TVs to web applications to… I don’t know… a watch, probably. But let’s not. Gathering around your watch for a game of Fibbage is super-dumb.” Initially operating as Jellyvision Games from 1995 to 2001, then revived in 2008, the studio was originally known for its You Don’t Know Jack series of quirky comedy quiz games. When the studio rebranded as Jackbox Games in 2013, it released a series of new standalone games before shifting its focus to the Jackbox Party Pack series, each of which contained a number of party games which can be played with web-enabled devices (such as mobile phones) as controllers. To date, there have been 10 Jackbox Party Packs and a three-game Jackbox Naughty Pack, offering a total of 53 party games. If Jackbox’s mission statement is to be understood, all of these games are intended to eventually make their way to the Jackbox Games app on a subscription basis. ChatGPT-4.5 is here (for most users), but I think OpenAI’s model selection is now a complete mess ChatGPT-4.5 is here (for most users), but I think OpenAI’s model selection is now a complete mess Following yesterday’s announcement that ChatGPT-4.5 would be rolling out from today, and over the next few days, I was pretty pleased to find it had appeared in my model selector in ChatGPT Plus, however the model selector now looks like a complete mess. Take a look: There are now eight different LLMs for ChatGPT Plus users to choose between. (Image credit: OpenAI/APple) Yes, there are a staggering eight different options to choose from. I appreciate that OpenAI has added handy explainers under each one, like “Great for most questions”, or, “Uses advanced reasoning”, but that’s a hell of a list to wade through and understand. OpenAI gets it Annoyingly, OpenAI already knows this isn’t a great solution. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman tweeted back in February that the company was going to simplify its model selection into something more suitable for consumers, but ChatGPT-4.5 has just arrived and here we are, it’s worse than ever. On X in February, in a post entitled, “OPENAI ROADMAP UPDATE FOR GPT-4.5 and GPT-5”, Altman wrote, “We want AI to ‘just work’ for you; we realize how complicated our model and product offerings have gotten. We hate the model picker as much as you do and want to return to magic unified intelligence.” To be fair, Altman’s post did say that after releasing ChatGPT-4.5, “a top goal for us is to unify o-series models and GPT-series models by creating systems that can use all our tools, know when to think for a long time or not, and generally be useful for a very wide range of tasks.” Unfortunately, there is no timescale on how long that will take, and the current LLM (Large Language Model) picker screen is beyond ridiculous. For ChatGPT users on the free plan, things are much simpler – there is only one option called “ChatGPT”, and the option to upgrade to Plus. ChatGPT-4.5 works fine The good news is that from my initial testing, ChatGPT-4.5 works flawlessly. It feels like it is somewhere between OpenAI’s deeper reasoning models like o1 and o3 with a bit of the casual chat of ChatGPT-4o thrown in. It’s fast too, which is good news considering that it has all of ChatGPT Plus’ subscribers that have access to it testing what they can do with the new LLM right now. OpenAI describes ChatGPT-4.5 as feeling more natural than its predecessor. “It’s broader knowledge base, improved ability to follow user intent, and greater ‘EQ’ make it useful for tasks like improving writing, programming, and solving practical problems. We also expect it to hallucinate less.” Hallucinating, or “making stuff up” as the rest of the world calls it, has been a particular problem for most chatbots so far, so if OpenAI can make significant improvements in that area we’ll all be thankful. We’ll bring you a more considered appraisal of what ChatGPT-4.5 can do over the next few days. Raytheon vs. Lockheed Martin: Which Stock Has More Upside? Raytheon vs. Lockheed Martin: Which Stock Has More Upside? Defense stocks took a tumble heading into 2025 as President Trump returned to the White House for his second term. Trump has stated his intent as a peacemaker to bring the wars in Ukraine and Israel to a halt. While this is good news to the people and the countries, it also means potentially less money will be spent on weapons and defense budgets, ultimately leading to a deceleration in revenue growth for defense contractors. Add in the effects of the Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) efforts to cut waste and fraud by scrutinizing defense contracts and budgets across all departments of the government, resulting in a swift sentiment reversal for the group. Two defense stocks in the aerospace sector immediately come to mind during geopolitical conflicts: Lockheed Martin (NYSE:) and Rtx Corp (NYSE:), formerly known as Raytheon (NYSE:). Both stocks surge during wars, providing essential defense and missile systems and military hardware. Investors may ponder which stock could have more upside this year amidst the movement to trim budgets and resolve geopolitical tensions. Let’s take a look at both. Lockheed Martin: The World’s Largest Defense Contractor Has the Most Exposure Shares of Lockheed Martin are down 26.9% from their high of $618.95 on Oct 22, 2024, and down 7.32% year-to-date (YTD) as of Feb 28, 2025. As the largest defense contractor in the world, its stock is literally a barometer of geopolitical tensions. The company posted record earnings in 2024 as tensions continued to rise. The stock nearly doubled during the three-year-long Ukraine-Russia war. Being the largest defense company means having the most exposure to wars. Logically, this would also mean Lockheed takes the worst of post-war budget cuts. Lockheed Made Records in 2024, But the Writing Was On the Wall The company saw its quarterly revenue peak in Q4 2023 at $18.87 billion. A year later, in 2024, Lockheed’s revenues fell 1.3% year-over-year (YoY) to $18.62 billion, falling short of Wall Street consensus analyst expectations of $18.87 billion, a $250 million miss. However, earnings remained strong as the company posted Q4 earnings-per-shares (EPS) of $7.67, crushing consensus estimates of $6.62 by $1.05. The weakness came from the deceleration in its classified contracts business. Even Lockheed saw the writing on the wall in its forward guidance. For the full year 2025, the company sees EPS of $27.00 to $27.30, which is short of the $27.88 consensus estimates. Revenue is expected between $73.75 and $74.75 billion, with a midpoint at $74.25 billion, which is slightly higher than consensus analyst estimates of $74.11 billion. This caused an immediate 10% stock selloff the following day. Lockheed’s Achilles heel is its lack of revenue diversification. Nearly 75% of its 2024 revenues came from servicing contracts with the United States Department of Defense. RTX: Diversification Is the Best Defense for Raytheon Lockheed, RTX stock recently hit new all-time highs at $133.09, trading up 14.92% YTD as of Feb 28, 2025. The reason for the outperformance compared to Lockheed Martin’s stock is revenue diversification. RTX has three segments: Collins Aerospace, Pratt & Whitney, and Raytheon Technologies (NYSE:). From aerospace parts to aircraft engines to missile defense systems like the Global Patriot missile defense systems, RTX’s revenues are split almost evenly between government and commercial. The Growth Engine is Still Running Driven By Commercial Business RTX Q4 revenue growth of 8.5% YoY to $21.62 billion, beating consensus estimates of $20.54 billion. The company posted EPS of $1.54, also beating consensus analyst estimates of $1.38 by 16 cents. It’s important to note the backlog grew to $218 billion, of which $125 billion is for commercial customers and $93 billion is for defense. RTX reported full-year 2025 guidance of EPS between $6.00 and $6.15 vs. $6.09 consensus estimates. Revenue is expected between $83 and $84 billion, with a midpoint of $83.5 billion. This falls short of the $84.43 billion expected by analysts. Cash flow is expected between $7 and $7.5 billion. RTX is less exposed to defense spending downsizing as revenues are almost evenly split between commercial and defense, while the backlog is tilted 53.7% by $42.7% in favor of commercial contracts. (AP) — A fiery small plane ****** in Tennessee last year that killed a ********* family of five was most likely the result of pilot error, according to a National Transportation Safety Board report released this week. A yearlong investigation of the March 4, 2024, ****** found no mechanical problems with the plane, although the fuel selector was between the “off” position and the left main tank position. “This setting would starve the engine of fuel and was likely the result of the pilot changing the fuel selector handle in preparation for landing,” according to the report. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. The Piper PA-32RT single-engine plane crashed within Nashville city limits alongside Interstate 40, frightening passing motorists. It burst into flames in grass just off the highway and behind a Costco on the city’s westside, about 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) south of Nashville’s John C Tune Airport. Victor Dotsenko, 43, was flying the plane. The passengers were his wife, Rimma, 39, and their three children, David, 12, Adam, 10, and Emma, 7. The family was from King Township, Ontario. Their flight originated in Ontario and made stops in Pennsylvania and Kentucky to refuel before attempting to land at the general aviation airport around 7:40 p.m. Dotsenko had contacted air traffic controllers and was lined up with the runway, but for unknown reasons he failed to descend for landing. He requested to circle around and approach the runway again. When a controller asked Dotsenko if he still had the airport in sight, he stated that his engine had shut down. The controller asked again if he was trying to land. “I’m going to be landing, I don’t know where,” Dotsenko said. A controller told him they were clearing a runway and urged him to try to glide in. But Dotsenko said in his last transmission, “I’m too far away. I’m not going to make it.” An analysis of residential audio and video recordings “revealed that the engine was operating at nearly full continuous power of about 2,650 rpm before the engine sound became abnormal, and the audio contained several ‘popping’ noises before the sound of engine noise ended,” according to the report. Many witnesses called 911, some of them still in shock and disbelief at what they had seen, according to audio of the calls obtained through a public records request. “Oh my God. It almost hit my car!” one caller said. Man Says He Saw ‘Fist Imprint’ on Baby During FaceTime Call. Now Mom Is Charged with Child Abuse Man Says He Saw ‘Fist Imprint’ on Baby During FaceTime Call. Now Mom Is Charged with Child Abuse A 22-year-old California woman was arrested Sunday and charged with child abuse after a friend allegedly saw a “fist imprint” on her 11-month-old child’s face. Isaiah Polk told KRCR that he called 911 after having a FaceTime call with his friend Aleesha Ann Allen, during which he allegedly noticed bruises on the face of the woman’s child. Sheriff’s deputies arrived at Allen’s Shasta Lake home around 11:15 am to conduct a ******** check on the 11-month-old, per a statement from the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office. When law enforcement arrived at the home, Allen was in the process of putting the baby into a vehicle. Then, deputies “observed the juvenile and noticed facial injuries that appeared to be deliberately inflicted and consistent with child abuse,” the statement reads. Referencing the child’s alleged injuries, Polk told KRCR: “It made me almost want to shed a tear. It was like, man, like… the way his face looked, he didn’t fall off a bed. Like there was a fist imprint.” Allen was booked into the Shasta County Jail on charges of child abuse with possible great bodily injury/death. She’s been released on her own recognizance and is now prohibited from consuming any alcohol or contacting the alleged victim, per the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office. She’s also subject to GPS monitoring. Allen’s next scheduled court date is April 8, 2025. After being examined at a local hospital, the child is being cared for by family members. Hamilton and Leclerc put on show for Ferrari fans Hamilton and Leclerc put on show for Ferrari fans Lewis Hamilton felt the force of the Ferrari fans as he and teammate Charles Leclerc sped around Milan’s Piazza Castello on Thursday before heading to Australia for the start of the Formula One season. Some 35,000 “tifosi” came to watch as seven-times world champion Hamilton performed smoking tyre burnouts after filling the city streets with noise. Hamilton drove a 2021 SF21 car while Leclerc was at the wheel of an SF90, the car in which he won his first race for the team in 2019, with both running at the same time and passing each other. “I’ve seen the tifosi over the years for Sebastian (Vettel), I’ve seen them for Fernando (Alonso), I’ve seen them for Charles and Carlos (Sainz), so I wasn’t surprised,” said Hamilton of the crowd’s excitement. “Bit by bit I’m getting to see more and more of the tifosi and getting to know them a little bit more,” added the 40-year-old. “I really really want to be able to communicate with them in Italian, so I’ve got to work on it.” The most successful team in Formula One have not won a championship since the 2008 constructors’ title and Hamilton, moving from Mercedes to Maranello, arrives chasing a record eighth title. The Briton was left in no doubt what that would mean for the fans and Italy as a whole. “Just driving for Ferrari is a huge honour but they already have an incredible legacy so it’s not that they need necessarily another championship, because they have so many already,” said Hamilton. “But I know that’s what they exist to do, to work towards, and I know that the tifosi are dying for that … I wouldn’t be able to find the words to be able to express just how special that would be. “But that’s what we work towards.” Hamilton said Ferrari had left no stone unturned in their preparations and he headed for Melbourne feeling relaxed and in good shape. Leclerc, who won at home in Monaco and Ferrari’s home race at Monza last year, said the support of the fans was sure to be an extra boost. “It motivates us so much. And we feel the responsibility when you are working for Ferrari and when you are driving for Ferrari. But the passion just makes everything and the energy so much more positive,” he said. First Loch Ness monster sighting in 2025 reported. Could mystery finally be solved? First Loch Ness monster sighting in 2025 reported. Could mystery finally be solved? A man on the shores of Scotland’s Dores Beach said he saw the elusive Loch Ness monster emerging from the depths of the loch, the first potential Nessie sighting reported to The Loch Ness Centre in 2025, the organization says. Winter often brings bad weather and the loch’s surface can be choppy and shrouded in mist, leading to fewer reported sightings, Aimee Todd, the center’s marketing manager, told USA TODAY on Thursday. But on Jan. 29, when the latest purported photo of the mythical creature was taken, the waters were calm and the conditions ideal for spotting unusual activity, according to Todd. Todd said she was thrilled to learn of the latest sighting. “I just thought it was brilliant because it really shows like the wave,” Todd said. “And it looks like there is like some kind of dark mass under the water pushing up that wave.” Todd said the center has reached out to experts including Alan Mackenna of Loch Ness Exploration to verify that image is not a case of mistaken identity. She said often seals, birds or even boat wakes can be mistaken for Nessie and she is waiting to get more information from the man who took the photo on his cellphone and has not been publicly identified. Will the Loch Ness monster mystery ever be solved? The Loch Ness Centre has worked with Mackenna’s organization and the University of Aberdeen to use cutting-edge technology to probe the depths of the loch and has invited hundreds of people around the world to participate in surface watching events, Todd said. During a massive search in 2023, Mackenna’s team used drones and other technology to surveil the lake. “Every observation adds to our understanding, whether it’s potential evidence of Nessie or new insights into the loch’s unique ecosystem,” Mackenna said in a statement about the latest sighting. The center will be holding the search for Nessie dubbed “The Quest” again in May, Todd said, and volunteers will monitor the surface of the lake at 13 different locations for over six hours. Searchers will also venture out on the center’s boat and use a hydrophone to detect acoustic signals under the water, she said. Nessie hunters board a boat on Loch Ness for what is being described as the biggest search for the Loch Ness Monster since the early 1970s on Aug. 27, 2023, in Drumnadrochit, Scotland. Loch Ness Monster hunt in photos: See Scotland’s biggest search for Nessie in 50 years What is the Loch Ness Monster? There have been nearly 1,160 reported sightings of the creature over the years since it was first reportedly spotted in 564, according to the official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register. Still, no definitive proof of the monster’s existence has ever been found and it’s widely considered a myth. Some have theorized Nessie might be a Jurassic-era reptile like a Plesiosaur, a giant fish or even an eel. Researchers who analyzed DNA samples from the icy waters of the Scottish lake identified about 3,000 different species, but the results ruled out the presence of large animals such as dinosaurs. Still, Todd said she believes in the possibility. “I don’t think there’s a been a definitive answer for yes or no yet…There’s just too many sightings and too many descriptions from like photos, from films, and just like witness statements as well that are all too similar,” she said. Nagina Ishaq, general manager of the center called the latest sighting “particularly captivating” and said the organization remains “committed to solving the mystery of Nessie once and for all.” “Our previous collaborations with the University of Aberdeen and Loch Ness Exploration allowed us to advance our research efforts significantly, and this potential sighting is a reminder that the mystery of Loch Ness is far from solved,” Ishaq said in a statement. “We continue to explore every possibility, and are committed to uncovering the truth.” Contributing: Emily DeLetter, USA TODAY; Reuters This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: First Loch Ness monster sighting in 2025. Helldivers 2 Boss Just Confirmed There Are Traitors Amongst Us Who Choose Having Fun Over Spreading Democracy Helldivers 2 Boss Just Confirmed There Are Traitors Amongst Us Who Choose Having Fun Over Spreading Democracy Helldivers 2 features three different factions: Automatons, Terminids, and Illuminate. Every week, an in-game message announces a brand new Major Order, which is usually focused on slowing down the invasion of one of these factions. However, some players just ignore the orders and fight against those enemies who are already retreating. This has been a major problem within the community since day one, as Major Orders can only be completed if all players work together. Most Helldivers 2 players love to play against Terminids (Image via Arrowhead Game Studios) The game director of Helldivers 2 recently admitted that players picking their favorite faction is inevitable, so all Arrowhead Game Studios can do is offer different experiences on different enemy missions. Many new enemies were introduced recently: Jet Brigade, Predator Strain, and finally, a brand new faction, the Illuminate, so it’s safe to say that the game is constantly evolving. Many Helldivers 2 players are not interested in completing the Major Orders The Major Orders play a key role in determining the outcome of the story in Helldivers 2. However, it seems like some players are just not interested in the game’s lore. Each Major Order asks players to prioritize battles against one specific faction, but many ignore it to fight against their favorite enemies, even if the threat is too small. Mikael Eriksson, the game director of Helldivers 2, recently appeared for an interview with Polygon and was asked if players still ignore Major Orders. He said, There are definitely some players who play primarily against one faction. What I can say is that we do actually see from data that what players care about the most is the Major Orders and story development of the game. When there’s a story that focuses on the bot front, for instance, we see massive impacts of players fighting the bots… If we have a Major Order to play against the bugs, we see way more than half of players playing against bugs, then we switch it around to bots or Illuminates or whatever it might be. In the past, Helldivers have messed up some Major Orders due to the communication gap. In fact, Arrowhead plans to give players a brand new in-game feature that will allow them to carry out more coordinated attacks. Arrowhead Game Studios plans to expand the existing factions Arrowhead has confirmed that more enemies will join the game soon (Image via Arrowhead Game Studios) Eriksson believes that it’s almost impossible to stop players from having favorite factions, so the best way to keep the gaming experience fresh is by expanding the existing factions. He said, I think it’s inevitable that players will have their own favorite faction, and if every faction had the exact same kind of experience, then we’re not expanding the game enough. We want to offer different experiences, challenges, and emotions with these factions. We want to expand on them in many different ways going forward. We’ve seen examples of this in the game: Jet Brigade and Predator Strain are new types of Automaton and Terminid units that are much more difficult to take down as compared to the regular units. As for the latest faction, the Illuminate, it has been confirmed that the current Illuminate enemies are just a small section of the entire faction. Fans of the first game are aware of how deadly this faction is, so don’t underestimate them because the Harvester is nothing compared to Illuminate’s heavy units.
