VICI Properties (NYSE:VICI) Announces US$0 Dividend Per Share for Q1 2025 VICI Properties (NYSE:VICI) Announces US$0 Dividend Per Share for Q1 2025 VICI Properties recently declared a regular quarterly cash dividend of $0.43 per share, likely influencing its share price movement, which rose 7% in the past month. The dividend announcement, alongside the company’s strategic partnership with Cain International and Eldridge Industries LLC for the One Beverly Hills development, reflects VICI’s commitment to shareholder value and growth in the real estate sector. Despite a dip in their fourth-quarter net income, the annual performance saw increased revenue and net income for 2024, suggesting resilience in challenging economic conditions. Meanwhile, broader market indices faced declines amidst economic concerns and tariff-related uncertainties, which underscores VICI’s solid performance against a volatile market backdrop. While the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 logged significant weekly losses, VICI’s strategic initiatives and continued dividend commitment might have provided investors with confidence, contributing to its positive price movement during a ******* when the overall market showed signs of instability. Unlock comprehensive insights into our analysis of VICI Properties stock here. NYSE:VICI Earnings Per Share Growth as at Mar 2025 Over the past five years, VICI Properties’ total shareholder returns amounted to 156.49%, showing significant growth when compared to broader market trends. Several key factors contributed to this performance. A consistent dividend policy, including a recent affirmation with payouts such as US$0.4325 per share, underscores its commitment to shareholder value. Major strategic partnerships, like the one with Cain International and Eldridge Industries for the One Beverly Hills development, reflect VICI’s strategic focus on growth in the experiential real estate sector. Further, robust earnings growth has been a major driver, with profits increasing significantly by 34.2% per year over this *******. Despite recent deceleration in profit growth, VICI still outperformed the US Specialized REITs industry. It also demonstrated financial acumen through successful follow-on equity offerings raising substantial capital, such as the US$948.5 million in May 2024, helping bolster its investment capacity. Pope Francis responding well to treatment, ******** says Pope Francis responding well to treatment, ******** says Pope Francis, who has been battling pneumonia and bronchitis for more than three weeks, has shown a “good response” to treatment, the ******** has said. “The clinical condition of the Holy Father in recent days has remained stable and, consequently, indicates a good response to the treatment,” the ******** said. “There is therefore a gradual, slight improvement”, it added. The 88-year-old prayed on Saturday morning in the chapel of the papal suite at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he is being treated. The Argentine pontiff has not been seen in public since entering the hospital, his longest stretch away from the public eye since his papacy began 12 years ago. He was admitted to hospital on 14 February after experiencing breathing difficulties – and first treated for bronchitis before being diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs. He is particularly vulnerable to pneumonia, an infection of the lungs that can be caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi, after he contracted pleurisy – an inflammation of the lungs – as a young man and had a partial lung removal. Keir Starmer writes heartfelt message to daughter Keir Starmer writes heartfelt message to daughter Sir Keir Starmer said wants a future “defined by hope”, not prejudice in a touching message to his daughter on International Women’s Day. “To my daughter, you are my pride and joy”, the prime minister wrote in an Instagram post, adding that he does his job for her generation. Other ministers have marked the day with pledges to tackle the gender pay gap and give women a better start in life, as Labour peer Baroness Harriet Harman starts her new role as the ***’s special envoy for women and girls. The government said it is “accelerating action to change women’s lives” on this day as part of its Plan for Change. Sir Keir’s message to his daughter, said: “It’s for you, and your generation, that I do this job. “To make sure your skills and talents determine how far you go, not your gender. “To make your future is defined by hope, security and opportunities, not prejudice and limits. “On International Women’s Day, we celebrate the achievements of women before you, and look forward to the achievements possible in an equal world.” Meanwhile, Baroness Harman – who has advocated for women and girls throughout her career – called her appointment as the ***’s special envoy for women and girls, a “great honour”. She served as Peckham’s MP for more than 40 years, and held a number of ministerial roles including the women and equalities brief in the New Labour governments of Sir Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. “Over the last decades we have made tremendous strides towards ending women’s inequality,” Baroness Harman said, adding that the job is “far from done”. “The *** will, in coalition with women around the world, play a key role in standing up for the rights of all women and girls at a critical time.” Foreign Secretary David Lammy said he was “delighted” to appoint her, adding that “action on equality for women and girls is vital to delivering the global economic growth we need and, a safer, more secure world.” But her appointment has also drawn criticism. ActionAid ***’s co-chief Hannah Bond, said that without new funding, her appointment was “papering over the cracks” of a struggling aid sector. Ms Bond said that while the appointment is a “welcome step”, especially with Baroness Harman’s “strong track record… without funding to back it up, it risks being more symbol than substance.” The response comes after Sir Keir cut foreign aid spending to fund defence commitments he said were necessary to protect the *** amid uncertainty over the future of the Ukraine war and its implications for European security. Chiefs’ Xavier Worthy arrested in Texas on assault charge Chiefs’ Xavier Worthy arrested in Texas on assault charge Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy was arrested on Friday and booked on assault charges. According to jail records from Williamson County, Texas, Worthy was arrested and charged with assault against a family or household member by impeding their breathing or circulation. “We are aware and gathering information”, the Chiefs said in a statement Saturday morning. That charge is a third-degree felony in Texas and is defined as “intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly impeding the normal breathing or circulation of the blood of the person by applying pressure to the person’s throat or neck or by blocking the person’s nose or mouth.” It is punishable with a sentence of two to 10 years in jail and/or a fine not to exceed $10,000. Worthy’s lawyers said in a statement that the allegations against their client were “baseless” and that Worthy and a woman were in a dispute and she was asked to leave Worthy’s house, adding that the woman caused property damage and scratched Worthy’s face. The attorneys said Worthy did not want to press charges. “We will continue to cooperate with Williamson County authorities as we have full faith their thorough investigation will support Mr. Worthy’s innocence,” the attorneys, Chip Lewis and Sam Bennett, said in a statement. Xavier Worthy walks off the field after the Chiefs lost Super Bowl 59. The 21-year-old Worthy, who played college football at the University of Texas, was selected with the No. 28 pick in the 2024 NFL draft by the Chiefs after breaking the 40-yard dash record at the NFL Scouting Combine with a time of 4.21 seconds. “We are aware of the matter and have been in contact with the club,” the NFL said in a statement Saturday. Worthy caught 59 passes for 638 yards and six touchdowns and rushed for three touchdowns in his rookie season, adding three more touchdown catches in the playoffs. What is disease that killed Gene Hackman’s wife? What is disease that killed Gene Hackman’s wife? Rachel Looker BBC News, Washington Getty Images Betsy Arakawa, wife of Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman, died from a respiratory illness linked to hantavirus, a rare disease transmitted by infected rodents, officials have confirmed. Health experts warn that hantavirus can cause flu-like symptoms after exposure to rodent droppings, and in severe cases, it may develop into Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), a life-threatening lung condition. Medical investigators believe Ms Arakawa contracted HPS, which led to her death. It is believed she died a week before her husband, who was in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Authorities discovered the deceased couple in their New Mexico home last month. Here’s what you need to know about hantavirus. What is hantavirus? Hantavirus refers to a strain of viruses carried by rodents, primarily transmitted to humans through inhalation of airborne particles from dried rodent droppings. Infections typically occur when the virus becomes airborne from a rodent’s ******, droppings, or saliva, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Though rare, it can also spread through rodent bites or scratches. In North America, deer mice are the most common carriers, according to the Mayo Clinic. It can also spread through a rodent’s bite or scratch, but it is rarer. Deer mice are the most common carriers in North America, according to the Mayo Clinic. The virus can cause two severe illnesses. The first, Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome – the most common strain in the US – was the illness that led to Ms Arakawa’s death, officials say. Symptoms often start with fatigue, fever, and muscle aches, followed by headaches, dizziness, chills, and abdominal issues. If respiratory symptoms develop, the mortality rate is approximately 38%, according to the CDC. The second illness, Haemorrhagic Fever with Renal syndrome, is more severe and primarily affects the kidneys. Getty Images How many cases of Hantavirus are reported in US and globally? The CDC reported 864 cases of hantavirus in the US between 1993 and 2022. Most of the cases were found in rural areas of western states like California, Washington, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. The agency began surveillance for hantavirus diseases in 1993 during an outbreak of severe respiratory illness near the Four Corners region of the US where Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah all meet. There may be around 150,000 cases of Haemorrhagic Fever with Renal syndrome worldwide each year, according to a report from the National Institutes of Health. More than half occur in China. How is it treated? There is no specific treatment for hantavirus infections. The CDC recommends supportive care to treat symptoms. Patients with severe symptoms may need to be admitted to hospitals in intensive care units. Some may need to be intubated in severe cases. The CDC recommends eliminating contact with rodents in homes or workplaces to reduce exposure to the virus. The agency also recommends sealing entry points in basements or attics where rodents may enter homes. Wearing protective gear is also suggested when cleaning up rodent droppings to avoid inhaling contaminated air. Seagate hard drive controversy persists as scammers discover methods to alter reliability metrics Seagate hard drive controversy persists as scammers discover methods to alter reliability metrics In a follow-up to the ongoing Seagate hard disk drive fiasco, ******* outlet Heise.de has uncovered a new method fraudsters use to sell used Seagate hard drives as new by manipulating their Field Accessible Reliability Metrics (FARM) values. This makes it increasingly difficult for consumers to detect tampered devices. Traditionally, buyers could identify used hard drives by comparing the operating hours reported in the SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) data with those in the FARM logs. However, fraudsters have altered the FARM logs’ operating hours, making this comparison unreliable. This advancement in deceptive practices presents a significant challenge for consumers trying to verify the authenticity of their purchases. Consumers must now seek alternative ways to confirm whether a hard drive is new. Comparing the SMART operating hours with the FARM Power-On Hours (POH) is insufficient. Instead, checking the operating hours of individual heads can help determine if a drive has been previously used. Another recommended method is examining the production date—new hard drives typically reach customers within six months of manufacturing. A significant delay between the production and purchase date could indicate potential fraud. Additionally, the absence of a front-facing sticker displaying the serial number and barcode can serve as a red flag. Consumers can also use smartphone barcode scanners to verify the authenticity of a drive’s serial number. (Image credit: Seagate) This issue first surfaced in January when reports emerged that used Seagate Exos enterprise-grade hard disk drives (HDDs) were being sold as new. Investigations revealed that the fraudsters had erased usage logs, altered serial numbers, and modified labels to make the drives appear unused. However, tools like smartmontools could still detect extensive usage histories, with some drives running over 22,000 hours. Further investigations traced the origin of these fraudulent drives to ******** cryptocurrency mining farms, particularly those mining Chia. During Chia’s peak, HDD demand surged, causing shortages and price hikes. As the profitability of Chia mining declined, many farms shut down, flooding the market with second-hand drives. These drives, often with 15,000 to 50,000 hours of prior use, had their internal records altered to appear new. Seagate denied involvement, launched an investigation, and provided tools to help consumers verify the authenticity of their purchases. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. Seagate has advised resellers to buy drives only from certified distribution partners to ensure authenticity. However, reports indicate that even some certified partners have inadvertently sold these fraudulent drives, highlighting supply chain vulnerabilities. The company emphasized that factory-recertified drives are clearly labeled and urged consumers to report any suspected fraudulent products directly to Seagate. Israeli tourist one of two women gang-****** in India, police say Israeli tourist one of two women gang-****** in India, police say Two women were gang-****** and a man was killed in an attack near a popular Unesco World Heritage site in southern India, according to police. The two women – an Israeli tourist and an Indian homestay operator – were stargazing with three male tourists near a lake in Hampi, Karnataka, when they were attacked by a group of men on Thursday night, police superintendent Ram Arasiddi told Reuters. Arasiddi said the assailants pushed the men into the Tungabhadra River canal before raping the women. Two of the men, one of them American, survived, and the third man’s body was recovered on Saturday morning, he said. “Five people – two women and three men – were attacked near Sanapur,” Arasiddi said. “Two of them are foreigners, an American [man], and another a woman from Israel.” Police have arrested two of the men accused of the attack and an investigation is ongoing, Arasiddi said. Police believe the men followed the group. According to witness testimony from one of the women, the group was stargazing near a temple in Sanapur when three men arrived on a motorcycle and asked them where they could get petrol. As one member of the group gave them directions, one of the three men demanded 100 rupees ($1.29) from the tourists. “Since the homestay operator did not know them, she told them they had no money,” police said. “When the men repeatedly insisted, one of the male tourists gave them 20 rupees. “After that, the three men allegedly started arguing.” The body of one of the male tourists was later found in the Tungabhadra canal in Karnataka’s Koppal district. A case has been registered at Gangavathi Rural Police Station under sections related to extortion, robbery, gang ***** and attempted *******. The victims are receiving medical treatment at a government hospital, the police said. Hampi, an ancient village in the south Indian state of Karnataka, is home to numerous ruins and temples from the Vijayanagara Empire. It was declared as a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1986. In a post on X, Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah wrote: “The attack and ***** of an Israeli citizen and homestay owner is a most heinous act. “As soon as the incident was reported, I obtained information from the relevant police, conducted a thorough investigation, and instructed them to quickly identify the culprits. “The police have arrested two accused in connection with the case and are continuing the investigation.” Attacks on women in India gained international attention last year after the brutal *****-********* of a junior doctor at a hospital in the eastern city of Kolkata. Officials Claim It ‘Does Not Exist’ 8 Years After The First Disaster Landed Organizer Behind Bars, Fyre Festival 2 Is Raising Eyebrows. Officials Claim It ‘Does Not Exist’ Fyre Festival is back—at least, that’s what Billy McFarland wants people to believe. The infamous festival that collapsed in 2017 and sent McFarland to prison for fraud has a sequel planned for May 30 to June 2, on Isla Mujeres, Mexico. But local officials say they know nothing about it. When tickets for Fyre Festival 2 went on *****, Isla Mujeres’ tourism director Edgar Gasca was caught off guard. “We have no knowledge of this event, nor contact with any person or company about it,” he told The Guardian. Don’t Miss: Gasca added that neither the Quintana Roo state tourism minister nor the hotels listed on Fyre’s website had been contacted about hosting the festival. Even Impression Isla Mujeres, a luxury hotel where the event supposedly had accommodations, confirmed it had not received “any approach or inquiry with regards to the event.” “The organizers didn’t even bother to approach the authorities,” Gasca said. “I think they thought they would just announce it and see if it got traction, then ask for the permits halfway down the path. It’s a bit of a naive way to think.” The local government has since issued a public denial, making it clear that no permits have been requested. And when Gasca entered the festival’s coordinates into Google Maps? “It takes you to the ocean—between Cancún and Isla Mujeres,” he said, laughing. Trending: The $1.3 Billion Startup Investment *****: How This Company’s Explosive Growth Is Opening Doors For Everyday Investors With A New $500 Minimum Despite the skepticism, McFarland insists that this time, things are different. Austin-based ticketing platform SoldOut.com announced they had partnered with McFarland and are guaranteeing refunds if the festival is canceled. “All proceeds from Fyre Festival ticket sales on SoldOut.com are held securely and will not be settled with Fyre until after the event has successfully taken place,” SoldOut.com President Andrew Hentrich told Billboard. Tickets range from $1,400 to $25,000, and for those looking for a VIP experience, a $1 million package for eight people includes luxury villas, a private yacht marina, and a private jet to and from Cancún. Story Continues McFarland is selling the event as a chance for redemption. “Fyre Festival 2 is about the adventure into the unknown, curating elite, once-in-a-lifetime experiences,” he said in a statement. See Also: Mark Cuban Backs This Innovative Startup That Turns Videos into Games — Claim Your Share Now One of the biggest concerns is the lack of details. There has been no announcement of musical acts, and Billboard reported that two of the largest booking agencies in the industry have not been contacted by Fyre organizers or their logistics partner, LostNights. McFarland, who was sentenced to six years in prison but was later released after less than four years, claims he is no longer in charge of the festival’s details, saying in an interview with NBC’s “Today,” “It’s not really about me. It’s about taking the vision, which is strong,” But with no confirmed lineup, no venue approvals, and no local backing, many are wondering if Fyre Festival 2 will turn out to be as real as the gourmet meals promised at the first event—where guests were instead handed cheese sandwiches in styrofoam containers. Liverpool: ‘The first of three finals’ – how good can Reds’ season be? Liverpool: ‘The first of three finals’ – how good can Reds’ season be? “The first of three finals,” is how Arne Slot described Liverpool’s 3-1 comeback win over Southampton to go 16 points clear in the Premier League. The Reds now face a Champions League tie with Paris St-Germain and the Carabao Cup final with Newcastle before they are in league action again. Liverpool’s dream of achieving the Treble was ended last month by Plymouth in the fourth round of the FA Cup – but they remain firmly in the hunt for three trophies. “It’s a sign of a good team that you can win in different ways,” Slot told BBC Match of the Day after the match. “It was a poor performance first half – not only because of the way we played but also because of the energy we brought.” He added in his post-match news conference: “This was the most important game of the week. The first of three finals. I hope in the next finals we play a bit better than the first one.” Mohamed Salah netted two penalties at Anfield, with Darwin Nunez scoring the other as they came back from 1-0 down. A mix-up between Virgil van Dijk and Alisson had allowed Will Smallbone to give the Premier League’s bottom side a half-time lead. Slot’s side have had to fight for two wins in a week as he bids for a trophy-laden first season since replacing club icon Jurgen Klopp. “I don’t think we played good today,” said Salah, who has 32 goals in all competitions. Salah has been involved in 44 Premier League goals this season (27 goals, 17 assists), the joint-most by a player in a 38-game season. “If you want to win the Champions League or Premier League you have to win these games like that,” he added. On Tuesday the Reds host Paris St-Germain in the Champions League last 16 second leg, leading 1-0 from their smash and grab at the Parc des Princes. “The only good thing in the first 45 minutes was that they saved their energy [for PSG] and didn’t run at all,” quipped Slot. “It was maybe the first time this season I saw this tempo. “We have to go one step up in terms of intensity against PSG. Compared to the game today we have to go three, four, five, six, seven times up in terms of intensity if we want to have any chance of reaching the next round.” Next Sunday they meet Newcastle at Wembley in the Carabao Cup final – with a chance to win a first trophy under their Dutch manager. “The last two games have been very tough – it is not about me, it’s about the whole team,” Harvey Elliott, a half-time substitute on Saturday and goalscorer in Paris, told BBC Radio 5 Live. “We need to keep winning games – it’s as simple as that. “It’s about taking it game by game and making sure we apply ourselves in the best possible way.” Source link #Liverpool #finals #good #Reds #season Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

The Washington Post: Extreme ‘clean’ eating, or orthorexia, can tip healthy eaters into a danger zone The Washington Post: Extreme ‘clean’ eating, or orthorexia, can tip healthy eaters into a danger zone Berry bowls. Erewhon smoothies. Chia pudding. Many of us mindfully sprinkle wheat germ on grapefruit or embrace whatever healthy food trend promises to deliver a longer lifespan, and what’s the harm of that? But good intentions, it turns out, can go too far. In recent years, physicians and researchers have seen a rise in orthorexia, disordered eating focused on extreme healthy eating. In 1997, physician Steven Bratman coined the term “orthorexia” (orthos, “right” and orexia, “appetite,” translating to “righteous eating”) in response to his patients who were fine physically but “driving themselves crazy” over their eating habits. Dr Bratman’s work observed two stages of orthorexia. Healthy orthorexia, with an interest in healthy eating with no pathological features, and orthorexia nervosa, with an obsessive focus on healthy eating. “Many people are able to eat healthy without being orthorexic,” Dr Bratman says. “The difference is the obsessiveness and restriction that causes harm.” A ‘tricky’ eating problem Orthorexia is linked to perfectionism, obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety. Characteristics include rigid food choices, meticulous planning and a focus on food as a source of health rather than pleasure. The prevalence of orthorexia nervosa remains hard to pin down, with some research estimating 6.9 percent of the general population struggles with it versus up to 35 to 57.8 percent of high-risk groups, which include health-care professionals, athletes, artists and others with perfectionist tendencies. Experts argue that the lack of a recommended diagnostic tool undermines the estimates of orthorexia’s prevalence, which can have significant mental and physical health consequences. “Orthorexia is tricky because eating healthy is good for us,” says Jennifer Wildes, a psychiatry professor at University of Chicago Medicine. “But when it interferes with psychosocial functioning and the thought of eating birthday cake makes you burst into tears, it’s a big sign you need help.” Some recent research suggests orthorexia is on the rise. A study led by José Francisco López-Gil, a senior researcher in lifestyle medicine at the Universidad de Las Américas, hopes to clarify the condition’s prevalence, contributing factors and diagnostic challenges. López-Gil’s work emphasises the need for standardised diagnostic criteria for the condition. “More research is needed, but that doesn’t mean [orthorexia] isn’t a real and significant condition,” Dr López-Gil says. Social media connection Experts say social media plays a role in perpetuating orthorexia, although the extent is unclear. “It’s hard to tell if there’s an uptick in orthorexia because we’re better at recognizing it, or because of social media,” Professor Wildes says. “Most likely, it’s both.” Dr López-Gil says higher social media use correlates with increased orthorexia symptoms, particularly within online “clean eating” communities. He also pointed to post-pandemic shifts in eating habits, increased screen time and heightened health anxieties as contributing factors. “There’s always been a relationship between media consumption and perceptions of your body or eating behaviours,” says T. Makana Chock, a professor at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications. “But social media is different because it’s social, and humans have a visceral desire to belong to a group, even if it’s a group of people we’ve never met in person.” A TikTok search for “clean eating” generated 64.5 million posts. “What I Eat in a Day,” a common term on social platforms, chronicles influencers’ daily food intake and hacks including filling up on bowls of cucumbers and calorie-deficit days. “Orthorexics develop quite ornate rules around clean eating and living and adhere to them,” says David J. Alperovitz, director of the Klarman Eating Disorders Centre at McLean Hospital. “People gravitate toward things they can control when they feel anxious, and food and diet, as well as weight, body shape and size, are quantifiable.” Unlike those with anorexia nervosa, the research shows that individuals with orthorexia typically don’t struggle with perceived weight or body shape. The distinction is crucial, as many orthorexics are treated with traditional anorexia therapy, which may not be appropriate. Ironically, despite consuming adequate calories, some orthorexic people can be malnourished because their limited diets don’t provide the nutrients they need. “It’s difficult to recognize that the pursuit of healthy living can become extreme and create physical and psychological problems,” says Doreen S. Marshall, chief executive officer of the US National Eating Disorders Association. Marshall adds that the high mortality rate associated with eating disorders calls for increased attention and resources. Experts offer the following advice to get help Don’t wait to get help Ms Marshall suggests starting with the NEDA screening tool, which was used 110,000 times last year and has been used more than a million times since its inception. Treating both the mental and physical health of orthorexia is imperative. Enlist professionals, and self-advocate Treatment is most effective with a multidisciplinary team, including an individual therapist, psychiatrist, dietitian and, in some cases, a family therapist. Because primary care doctors commonly fail to ask patients about their food choices and behaviour unless there’s a red flag, Ms Marshall suggests bringing the NEDA screening result to medical appointments and discussing ways to get help. Outsmart the algorithm Beat social platforms at their own game. Searching for travel destinations, sneakers or funny animal videos will change the content feed, Professor Chock says. She recommends setting a timer for scrolling and limiting consumption to once or twice a day and checking the credentials of influencers whose nutritional advice you’re taking. Head to the supermarket Professor Wildes sends her patients to the shops and asks them to list the foods they once loved that they no longer allow themselves to eat. Patients then eat something from the list on their own or in her office. Because this can be difficult, Professor Wildes also has her patients post a list of what they used to value in their life on their refrigerator, mirror or bedside. When eating food not on their “safe” list gets scary, they can refer to the list. Resist labelling Dr Alperovitz warns families and friends to be mindful of the language they use about food and resist labels such as “good” or “bad.” Taking a moratorium from talking about food and offering support can be helpful, too. “I see a lot of families who have an orientation to healthy eating, which is fairly normative, but their comments might align with a broader cultural conception of healthy, which, even though they’re well intended, fit this pattern of restriction,” he says. People with orthorexia can break free from their behaviours, Professor Wildes says. “There just needs to be that little nugget that wants to change,” she says. “I think most people have it in them. Nat Locke: Pardon the patella-popping pun but I’m giving the squat challenge a good crack Nat Locke: Pardon the patella-popping pun but I’m giving the squat challenge a good crack Every now and then, I find myself doing something rash and unpredictable, just to feel alive. And that’s how I found myself signing up for the 58 squats a day challenge. It’s testament to the fact that Instagram advertising pays off, because after being fed an ad for the third time, I found myself saying, “Oh, why not?” Now, there’s a few things to consider here. Firstly, it’s a fundraiser for the National Breast ******* Foundation, and having lost three friends to breast ******* in the last five years, I figured it was a worthy cause. Also, every now and then, I feel the need to challenge myself. It’s the reason I did Ocsober a few years ago, which turned out to be the dullest month of my existence, but I did dine out on the self-righteousness for years to come. And finally, how hard can it be to do a few squats? I already do some at the gym, so this’ll be a cinch, right? So, I signed up for the challenge. And somewhat inexplicably, during that sign up process, I recklessly eschewed the 58 squat challenge and signed myself up for triple that. Three friends lost to breast *******, so three times the challenge. It’s simple maths. Until I realised that meant I had committed to doing 174 squats a day. ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY FOUR. That’s a total of 5394 squats for the month of March. And I am here to tell you that’s a lot. I mean, squats are a great exercise. You can do them anywhere. You don’t need any particular equipment. You can do them in your civvies. You don’t have to throw yourself onto the ground like when you’re doing godforsaken burpees (which, incidentally, are named after the dastardly villain who invented them: Royal Huddleston Burpee Sr. Impress your friends with that fact). But 174 of them is a significant amount, especially when you have to do it every single day for 31 days. Oh, and then there’s the fact that I have problematic kneecaps. Fifteen months ago, I blew my knee up while engaging in the thoroughly unathletic pursuit of getting out of bed. It scuppered my plans of hiking the Milford Track in New Zealand, a holiday I was leaving for just 10 days after the injury occurred. I had to rehab that thing for months, spending countless hours trudging up and down in the water walking lane at Fremantle Leisure Centre while being lapped by elderly ladies who had just gotten new knees. The entire sorry episode was a humiliating exercise. Then, last November, I fell off my bike and hurt that knee again. I wound up on crutches for a couple of weeks, although it just turned out to be bone bruising. Sure, bone bruising doesn’t sound that bad, but believe me, it was excruciating and took at least six weeks to come good. So here I am, doing 174 squats a day and trying to ignore the light crunching sounds coming from under my kneecaps. Just imagine that one person in your life who eats too loudly, then imagine they’re eating crunchy nut cornflakes, and that’s a rough approximation of the sound my knees are making with every rep. Fun. The secret to doing 174 of anything is to break it up into smaller lots, for both my knees’ and my sanity’s benefit. I bang out 10 reps before I leave the house in the morning (at roughly 4.40am) and then I’ve roped the rest of my team into joining me to do several sets of 10 during the show. If we put our backs into it, I can knock off 100 before 9am. When I get home, I put something in a high traffic area to act as a visual reminder. Basically, that means I leave something large and unignorable on the lounge room floor, so that every time I go to step around it, I’m reminded to whack out another 10 squats. So far, it’s working. Will I make it all the way through? Well, I’m one of those people who once I’ve committed to something, I’m certainly going to give it a crack. Pardon the patella-popping pun. And if my knees give way before the month is up, I’m sure I can come up with another equally awful exercise. In the meantime, the memory of those three incredible women spurs me on. Besides, they would all consider this utter madness, and I’ve no doubt they’re having a great belly laugh about it as we speak. And that’s enough of a reason for me. Ukraine fully committed to dialogue with US: Zelenskiy Ukraine fully committed to dialogue with US: Zelenskiy President Volodymyr Zelenskiy says Ukraine is “fully committed” to having a constructive dialogue with US representatives in Saudi Arabia next week over ways to end the war with Russia. Since taking office in January, US President Donald Trump has paused US military aid to Ukraine as well as intelligence-sharing. He has accused Zelenskiy of not being serious about reaching a peace agreement with Russia, which invaded Ukraine three years ago and has seized about 20 per cent of its territory. “Ukraine has been seeking peace from the very first second of this war. Realistic proposals are on the table. The key is to move quickly and effectively,” Zelenskiy said on social media network X. Zelenskiy said he would visit Saudi Arabia next week and that after meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman on Monday, Ukrainian diplomatic and military representatives would stay for a meeting on Tuesday with the US team. “On our side, we are fully committed to constructive dialogue, and we hope to discuss and agree on the necessary decisions and steps,” he said. The Ukrainian delegation will include Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Zelenskiy’s chief of staff Andriy Yermak and Defence Minister Rustem Umerov. Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff has also said he was in discussions with Ukraine for a framework deal to end the three-year war with Russia, and a meeting was planned next week with a Ukrainian delegation in Saudi Arabia. In February, Saudi Arabia hosted a meeting between US and Russian officials to discuss ways to halt the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War II. Ukraine was not included in those talks, raising concern among officials in Kyiv and among its European allies. Zelenskiy met Trump at the White House on February 28 but the encounter descended into acrimony when they clashed in front of the world’s media over peace moves. Meanwhile, war bloggers and a senior Russian commander said on Saturday that Russian troops had launched a large-scale offensive to retake swaths of the western Kursk region from Ukrainian forces. Ukrainian troops invaded Russia’s Kursk region last summer, taking chunks of territory in an unexpected lightning attack more than two years after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine. “In all directions of the Kursk section of the front, all units have launched a large-scale offensive,” Major General Apti Alaudinov, commander of a Chechen unit fighting for Russia in Kursk, said on Telegram. “The enemy is abandoning its positions.” Reuters was unable to verify the situation on the battlefield. Ukraine’s military did not immediately comment. Open source maps showed this week that Ukraine’s positions in Kursk have deteriorated sharply and its troops are nearly surrounded by Russian forces. Pro-Russian war blogger Two Majors said on Saturday Russian troops had begun an assault on Sudzha, a town 9.5km from the border with Ukraine, and that the situation for Ukrainian troops there was “close to critical”. Major General Alaudinov said Russian airborne brigades, motorised rifle regiments and the Akhmat special forces were taking part in “fierce battles” and “our guys are moving forward very well”. Russian troops recaptured three villages in Kursk – Viktorovka, Nikolaevka and Staraya Sorochina – from Ukraine on Saturday, the defence ministry said. Reuters could not independently verify its report. The village has hosted the event for nearly three decades. What we know The Itasca Village Board met Tuesday and determined that holding the fireworks show was “unfeasible” due to the construction scheduled in and around the park this summer, according to Village Administrator Carie Anne Ergo. What they’re saying “This was an extremely difficult decision to make,” Ergo said. “Itasca takes great pride in hosting the biggest and best fireworks show in Northern Illinois. Our first priority is always the safety and security of Itasca residents, businesses and visitors. Given the unique challenges presented this year, we cannot confidently recommend hosting fireworks in 2025.” What’s next Although this year’s celebration is canceled, Ergo said it doesn’t mean the event will be permanently discontinued. Your Blood Type Can Affect Risk of an Early Stroke, Scientists Discover Your Blood Type Can Affect Risk of an Early Stroke, Scientists Discover People with one of the type A blood groups are more likely to have a stroke before the age of 60 compared with people with other blood types, research shows. Blood types describe the rich variety of chemicals displayed on the surface of our red blood cells. Among the most familiar are those named A and B, which can be present together as AB, individually as A or B, or not present at all, as O. Even within these major blood types, there are subtle variations arising from mutations in the genes responsible. In a study published in 2022, genomics researchers uncovered a clear relationship between the gene for the A1 subgroup and early onset stroke. Researchers compiled data from 48 genetic studies, which included roughly 17,000 people with a stroke and nearly 600,000 non-stroke controls. All participants were between 18 and 59 years of age. A genome-wide search revealed two locations strongly associated with an earlier risk of stroke. One coincided with the spot where genes for blood type sit. A second analysis of specific types of blood-type gene then found people whose genome coded for a variation of the A group had a 16 percent higher chance of a stroke before the age 60, compared with a population of other blood types. For those with a gene for group O1, the risk was lower by 12 percent. The researchers noted, however, that the additional risk of stroke in people with type A blood is small, so there is no need for extra vigilance or screening in this group. “We still don’t know why blood type A would confer a higher risk,” said senior author and vascular neurologist Steven Kittner from the University of Maryland. “But it likely has something to do with blood-clotting factors like platelets and cells that line the blood vessels as well as other circulating proteins, all of which play a role in the development of blood clots.” While the study findings may seem alarming – that blood type could change early stroke risk – let’s put these results into context. Each year in the US just under 800,000 individuals experience a stroke. Most of these events – around three out of every four – occur in people 65 years and older, with risks doubling every decade after the age of 55. Also, the people included in the study lived in North America, Europe, Japan, Pakistan, and Australia, with people of non-European ancestry only making up 35 percent of participants. Future studies with a more diverse sample could help clarify the significance of the results. “We clearly need more follow-up studies to clarify the mechanisms of increased stroke risk,” Kittner said. Another key finding of the study came from comparing people who had a stroke before the age of 60 to those that had a stroke after the age of 60. For this, the researchers used a dataset of about 9,300 people over the age of 60 who had a stroke, and some 25,000 controls over the age of 60 who didn’t have a stroke. They found that the increased risk of stroke in the type A blood group became insignificant in the late-onset stroke group, suggesting that strokes that happen early in life may have a different mechanism compared to those that occur later on. Strokes in younger people are less likely to be caused by a build-up of fatty deposits in the arteries (a process called atherosclerosis) and more likely to be caused by factors to do with clot formation, the authors said. The study also found that people with type B blood were around 11 percent more likely to have a stroke compared to non-stroke controls regardless of their age. Previous studies suggest that the part of the genome that codes for blood type, called the ‘**** locus’, is associated with coronary artery calcification, which restricts blood flow, and heart attack. The genetic sequence for A and B blood types have also been associated with a slightly higher risk of blood clots in veins, called venous thrombosis. This paper was published in Neurology. An earlier version of this article was published in September 2022. Vinotto review: This enticing little wine bar could be Swanbourne’s best kept secret Vinotto review: This enticing little wine bar could be Swanbourne’s best kept secret For many of us, the demands of life can all too easily paint a night on the couch as an appealing option. That elusive date night can feel almost perpetually out of reach. Cue the neighbourhood wine bar. The beauty of these little gems is that you can access the restaurant experience in a more casual way. A stylish setting, well-curated wine lists and food to match — stop in for a drink and snack or while away hours over an afternoon or evening. Camera IconVinotto, Swanbourne’s neighbourhood wine bar. Credit: Ross Swanborough/The West *********** Vinotto, tucked away among an assuming strip of shops in Swanbourne, provides all of the above. On the night of our booking, my partner and I stroll past the local pizza shop and IGA, arriving at our shopfront destination. Camera IconAnchovy toast, confit onion, $9 each. Credit: Tristan McKenzie We receive a warm greeting on entry, clocking the terracotta-clad bar and open kitchen to the left, round tables lining the wall on our right. We’re seated in a cosy nook with a view of the two chefs busy in prep, lashings of fresh salami being sliced paper-thin. Towards the rear, a mezzanine houses additional tables and a little garden (where I’m told the kitchen grows its herbs) provides a pretty backdrop beyond double glass windows. Just like Nonna’s house, minus the tea towels. Vinotto is unpretentious — recommendations and expert wine knowledge is there at your fingertips, if you ask. The low-intervention wine list is heavy on old world wines with quality locals in the mix. Focusing on smaller producers, this is the place to sample that grape you’ve never heard of. It’s clear our passionate host wants us to enjoy what ends up in our glass. Service is friendly, efficient and down-to-earth. The seasonal menu is smallish but enticing, with snack options and larger share plates. The anchovy toast with confit onion ($9 each) is a fabulous start. The sweet-savouriness of the onion tones down the anchovy salt just enough — a tasty morsel atop a thin cracker-bed. Add a glass of Loire Valley chenin blanc, $20, and you’ll hit your sweet spot. We skipped the Albany rock oysters on this occasion. Not opposed to slinging back half a dozen when the opportunity arises, but at $7 a pop, other menu items beckoned. Like the pickled Fremantle octopus with kipflers and chilli — a steal at $15. The octopus was tender, complemented nicely by the cool, buttery nuttiness of the kipfler potatoes. A tad light on the chilli for those who enjoy a good kick but all round this was a quality dish. Camera IconPickled Fremantle octopus, kipflers chilli, $15. Credit: Tristan McKenzie By the time the croquettes arrived (Italian potato and cheese, $13, and with filling as fluffy as a teddy), an hour into our date, the bar had transformed into a buzzy hive of activity. Easy-listening tunes morphed into ambient electro and larger groups filled almost every table. We shared the veal polpette with lemon and parsley, $24, and the gnocchetti, with green beans and parmesan, $27. Italian for meatball, the polpettes arrived as a hearty serve of 10, covered in a soft snow of parmesan, wading in an almost sticky jus. First bites revealed raisins and pine nuts minced with veal, a Sicilian-style glow-up for your average meatball, the sweet-savoury combo satisfying in texture and taste. The gnocchetti (gnocchi’s leaner cousin) did the job, though the sauce leaned on the cheese for flavour intensity. The fritto misto (fried mixed seafood) came next, consisting of softshell crab, scallops and cod, $35, with two lemon wedges. While a large serving, the batter was a little heavy, overpowering the seafood. Camera IconVeal polpette, lemon and parsley, $24. Credit: Dania Portman But any quibbles were immediately dashed by the heavenly tiramisu. Parfait style and a vision in white: ******* mascarpone under a smattering of dark chocolate shards, soft sponge layered beneath. Deliciously rich with all the right coffee-liqueur chemistry. Best to share or risk being tipped over the edge. An indulgent end to our night. The verdict: 16/20 A stylish neighbourhood wine bar tucked away in Swanbourne. Excellent wine list with passionate staff and Italian-inspired plates to match. A lucky addition for locals but worth travelling for. I’m 65, have $120K, get $1,700 in Social Security a month with $3,900 monthly expenses. I want to know if I can get by I’m 65, have $120K, get $1,700 in Social Security a month with $3,900 monthly expenses. I want to know if I can get by I’m 65, have $120,000 saved, collect Social Security of $1,700/month — but monthly expenses total $3,900. How can I make sure money doesn’t run out without sacrificing lifestyle? At age 65, a $120,000 nest egg isn’t going to produce as much income as you might hope. You’d only be able to withdraw $4,800 annually ($383 a month) from your retirement savings — assuming you followed the 4% rule. That rule limits withdrawals to 4% of your nest egg each year to ensure your money lasts 30 years. Add a $1,700 Social Security check to that and you have about $2,000 to cover your stated expenses each month — about $1,900 shy of the $3,900 you need, not including emergency medical bills and expenses. Factor in taxes, and you’re in trouble. In fact, if you take this much money out of your savings, your money would only last 5 years if your investments earn 7% and you’re in the 22% tax bracket. You need to figure out another solution. Here are some options. If your retirement spending needs are higher than your income, consider increasing your income with a part-time job, if not a full-time job. You can collect Social Security benefits while you’re working, but if you haven’t hit the full retirement age of 67, the government can claw back your benefits. In 2025, you’ll lose $1 in benefits for every $2 earned above $23,400 if you won’t reach FRA all year. The good news is that if you earn too much and lose some or all of your Social Security benefits, this is temporary. Your payment will be recalculated after you hit full retirement age. So, working can help you in two ways, by providing you with a livable income and potentially giving your Social Security benefits a boost when you reach full retirement age. Read more: Jamie Dimon issues a warning about the US stock market — says prices are ‘kind of inflated.’ Crashproof your portfolio with these 3 rock-solid strategies If you’re a homeowner you may be able to tap into your home equity to generate cash flow — for example, through a reverse mortgage or even selling your home and downsizing, investing the difference. Alternatively, you may be able to find a tenant or roommate to help pay rent. You may have to reduce your spending regardless, but cost-cutting will be essential if a job is out of the question and you can’t dip into home equity or generate additional income. Story Continues Some people manage to get by on Social Security alone, but it means a less comfortable, more frugal lifestyle. The Social Security Administration reports that 39% of American men and 44% of American women get at least half their income from Social Security. Meanwhile, for 12% of men and 15% of women count on Social Security to provide 90% or more of their income — not ideal as the benefits are intended to replace 40% of pre-retirement income at most. If you have to survive on Social Security, cost-cutting may be easier if you make one or two big changes, like moving to a cheaper place rather than reducing lots of discretionary spending. One big cut can be easier to sustain than many small cuts. Consider working with a financial adviser to explore all your options and help you make the right decisions going forward. An adviser can help with your budgeting and may even identify potential income sources you’ve missed. It may be hard to make the numbers work in your situation, but it’s worth the effort. By finding more income and reducing your expenses, you can ensure that you still have the security you deserve. This article provides information only and should not be construed as advice. Bruised, bloodied but Pogacar still wins Strade Bianche Bruised, bloodied but Pogacar still wins Strade Bianche Bruised and bloodied, Tadej Pogacar has still managed to solo to another brilliant victory in the Strade Bianche. The defending champion recovered from a heavy ****** on Saturday to become only the second cyclist to win the Italian Spring classic three times. The Slovenian, who also became the first to win the race back-to-back, remarkably even had time to sit up on the approach to the line, raise his arms above his head and point both index fingers at the sky as he beamed broadly. “I enjoyed it until I crossed the finish line. Now the adrenaline has worn off, I’m starting to feel a lot of pain,” Pogacar said. “So not the best way to win a race but a win is a win, and let’s hope it’s nothing worse than it looks and all should be fine.” Pogacar, who also won in 2022, finished 1 minute 24 seconds ahead of Britain’s Tom Pidcock, and 2:12 ahead of Tim Wellens, of Belgium. This year’s Strade Bianche was one of the toughest yet as for the first time in 19 editions there were more than 80km of the white, gravel roads in Tuscany that give the race its name. Pogacar’s chances didn’t look good when he fell with just under 50km remaining. Pogacar was at the head of a leading trio going downhill and slid out on a corner, sending him flying across the road and tumbling head over heels into a ditch. He was swiftly back on his bicycle but covered in scrapes on his left leg and arm, with his skinsuit torn up, and about 30 seconds down on Pidcock. “I went too fast, I guess,” Pogacar said, when asked how the ****** happened. “I know this road very well, I’ve rode it like already now 20 times for sure in my life, but sometimes you misjudge and, I don’t know, I just slipped. “For a moment, I didn’t know if I was okay, and the bike was not working, so I had to change the bike. I was a bit worried because when you ******, the body takes a lot from you. But I still had enough to finish it off.” Pogacar managed to quickly pass Connor Swift, who had been the other rider in the trio, and, when the gap fell to 15 seconds, Pidcock opted to wait for Pogacar to continue their duel heading into the final 45km. Pogacar attacked on the penultimate sector, with 18km remaining, and left Pidcock in his – white – dust. “I came pretty close. I mean Tadej crashed, it’s unfortunate, but let’s be honest it gave me a bit more of an opportunity,” Pidcock said. “But he was still too strong in the last attack of his. “Of course I waited … He made a mistake and this is not how you take advantage in a race. It was also a long way to go. So I also don’t want to ride that far on my own.” Source link #Bruised #bloodied #Pogacar #wins #Strade #Bianche Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
