  1. Differences should be source of strength, King Charles Differences should be source of strength, King Charles Nations’ differences should be a source of strength rather than problems, King Charles says in a message to mark annual celebrations for the Commonwealth. As British Prime Minister Keir Starmer seeks to smooth tensions between the United States, Europe and Ukraine, the monarch has become an important figure in the diplomacy. He has offered US President Donald Trump an unprecedented second state visit which and last Sunday met Volodymyr Zelenskiy at his private estate in another show of support for the Ukrainian leader. In his message to mark Commonwealth Day on Monday, the annual celebration of the association of 56 nations which he now heads, the 76-year-old king speaks of the importance of nations coming together in extracts released by Buckingham Palace. “In these uncertain times, where it is all too easy to believe that our differences are problems instead of a source of strength and an opportunity for learning, the Commonwealth’s remarkable collection of nations and peoples come together in the spirit of support and, crucially, friendship,” Charles says. “The Commonwealth’s ability to bring together people from all over the world has stood the test of time and remains as ever-important today.” This year’s Commonwealth Day theme is Together We Thrive, which celebrates the “enduring spirit of the Commonwealth family”. Charles’ address will be published in full on Monday, when the annual service celebrating the Commonwealth is attended by senior members of the royal family and a congregation of invited guests. with PA Source link #Differences #source #strength #King #Charles Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  2. The Cybertruck design disaster is complete as Tesla gets desperate The Cybertruck design disaster is complete as Tesla gets desperate When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Credit: Tesla Ah, the Tesla Cybertruck. It seems the ‘edgy’ electric SUV will go down in history as an example of what happens when one of the world’s most valuable companies lets its CEO impose his personal taste in design. Tesla initially predicted that it could produce 500,000 units per year. But amid price hikes, multiple Cybertruck design fails, Elon Musk’s divisiveness and the general ugliness of the car, that isn’t going to happen. Tesla won’t report how many it’s actually sold, but estimates are around 40,000 in 2024. Now Tesla is offering discounted financing in a bid to shift its expensive low-polygon game asset on wheels. We’ve seen photos of Cybertrucks sitting on parking lots. The new financing offer seems like the latest desperate attempt to sell a car that nobody wants. And it might not work. Potential customers now know that sales are struggling and that better deals are likely to come soon, so anyone considering buying would be wise to wait. Meanwhile, existing owners are left with a bad taste in their mouths because they bought at a worse rate. Tesla already launched Cybertruck leases to help move vehicles. It’s also reportedly been flogging more expensive Foundations Series vehicles as regular Cybertrucks after removing their badges, while it started selling remaining Foundations Series cars with free wraps and free ‘lifetime’ Supercharging. Pity anyone who forked out $160,000 last year. Elon Musk’s personal transformation into a Nazi-saluting rightwing extremist, meddling in elections and decimating the US state, doesn’t seem to have helped Tesla either. Some people who bought Cybertrucks are regretting their purchase and trying to sell their ‘Nazi mobile’ because they don’t want people to think they’re evil. It’s about time everyone, Tesla included, admitted that the Cybertruck was a total flop. The whole concept was wrong from the start because it was based on Musk’s personal preference for something quirky that he once saw in a sci-fi movie rather than research into what people wanted. The design was flawed and misjudged, from materials that cost a fortune to replace to confusing brake lights, an inability to handle snow and a stunning failure to consider safety regulations, resulting in a vehicle that’s not road legal in the *** and Europe because of its weight and sharp edges. Vehicles were recalled because of accelerator pedals getting stuck down, and drivers have had body panels fly off while driving. The dark turn in Musk’s personal branding appears to have merely signed the Cybertruck’s death warrant. Sidemen FC match raises £4m for charities including BBC Children in Need Sidemen FC match raises £4m for charities including BBC Children in Need The sell-out Sidemen FC charity match at Wembley Stadium on Saturday raised £4,733,004 for charities including BBC Children in Need. The YouTube Allstars beat Sidemen FC in a “tense” penalty shootout, following a 9-9 draw at full-time. The Sidemen – a seven-strong group that includes content creators, musicians and boxer KSI – have more than 146 million YouTube subscribers between them. Over 8 million people tuned in from around the world to watch the livestream, according to a statement from the organisers. All 90,000 tickets for the game sold out in three hours, the statement added. The Sidemen said that they raised almost double the amount raised in their previous charity match, at West Ham’s London Stadium, which raised £2m in 2023. Other charities that will benefit, are Bright Side and M7 Education. Captaining the two sides, were The Sidemen’s Miniminter for Sidemen FC, and IShowSpeed for YouTube Allstars. YouTube phenomenon Mr Beast also featured for the All Stars. At half-time, both teams were drawing 4-4, and surprise half time performances came from rapper AJ Tracey and The Sidemen’s own KSI who performed his track Thick Of It. After a high-scoring 9-9 draw, the YouTube All Stars sealed the win on penalties. The seven members of The Sidemen went from making gaming content in their bedrooms to running a multi-million pound internet empire. Its members are: Olajide ‘JJ’ Olatunji (KSI), Simon Minter (Miniminter), Joshua Bradley (Zerkaa), Tobit ‘Tobi’ Brown (TBJZL), Ethan Payne (Behzinga), Vikram Singh Barn (Vikkstar123), and Harry Lewis (W2S). 6. King’s Commonwealth message of unity in ‘these uncertain times’ King’s Commonwealth message of unity in ‘these uncertain times’ Sean Coughlan Royal correspondent PA Media King Charles visited the Royal Navy’s flagship HMS Prince of Wales this week King Charles is to call for unity and building bridges in what he describes as “these uncertain times” of international tension, in a message to mark Commonwealth Day next week. In the annual message to mark the day on Monday, the King will emphasise the value of nations coming together in a “spirit of support, and crucially, friendship”. The King has become involved in the diplomatic negotiations involving the ***, the US and Ukraine – with the monarch warmly welcoming President Volodymyr Zelensky after the Ukrainian leader’s disastrous meeting with US President Donald Trump and with a state visit planned for Trump. A Commonwealth country, Canada, also faces its own tensions with Trump’s administration, as he has called for Canada to become the US 51st state. Commonwealth Day is traditionally marked with a service at Westminster Abbey and this year the King and Queen will attend alongside the Prince and Princess of Wales. In his message, the King will say: “In these uncertain times, where it is all too easy to believe that our differences are problems instead of a source of strength and an opportunity for learning, the Commonwealth’s remarkable collection of nations and peoples come together in the spirit of support and, crucially, friendship.” It is a message that he has made before – that the diversity of peoples and cultures is a strength and not a weakness. But it is a message now against a backdrop of global tensions, as the US pushes for an end to the war that followed the Russian invasion of Ukraine. As well as a show of solidarity with the Ukrainian President Zelensky, the King this week held a meeting with ********* PM Justin Trudeau, a Commonwealth leader who has faced pressure from the US. King Charles is Canada’s head of state and ahead of the meeting Trudeau said: “Nothing seems more important to Canadians right now than standing up for our sovereignty and our independence as a nation.” The King used the Commonwealth, with its 56-member nations, as an example of co-operation between countries. “The Commonwealth’s ability to bring together people from all over the world has stood the test of time and remains as ever-important today,” says the King’s message. The service at Westminster Abbey on Monday will emphasise the multicultural diversity of the Commonwealth, with the royal guests being met by a pipe band from a Hindu eco-temple in north-west London. There will be music from an African arts group, the Masai Cultural Arts team. And singer Joan Armatrading will perform a version of her song, Love and Affection. An innovation for this year’s Commonwealth Day has been that the King has prepared his own personal playlist of favourite music tracks, by artists including Bob Marley, Kylie Minogue and Raye. 7. Swimmer mauled by shark at Gunyah Beach in Sydney breaks her silence: ‘I should be dead’ Swimmer mauled by shark at Gunyah Beach in Sydney breaks her silence: ‘I should be dead’ A woman who survived a suspected bull shark attack says she “should be dead” and now “intends to buy a lottery ticket”. Mangyon Zhang, 57, who goes by “Mani”, was paddleboarding at Gunyah Beach in Bundeena, in Sydney’s southern outskirts, when she was mauled by about 1.30pm on Friday. Her partner Maria Masutti shared an update on Zhang’s condition on social media on Saturday, saying she is in “surprisingly good spirits”. “My beautiful partner Mangyon [Mani] is doing as well as can be expected,” Masutti said. “She has quite a severe laceration to her outer right leg, to the bone — calf and thigh, and inside thigh. “Thankfully it missed the arteries.” Camera IconMangyon Zhang, 57, was mauled in a suspected bull shark attack on Friday. Credit: Facebook Masutti said Zhang underwent a four-hour surgery on Friday, but medical staff had to leave the wound open so they could perform another surgery over the weekend to further clean and assess her injuries. “She lost quite a lot of blood and had transfusions,” Masutti said. “It was a very traumatic experience and although she didn’t feel pain or see the shark (just left a strong ‘whoosh’ sensation and then numbness and lots of blood), it took a while to get attention and she couldn’t move her body to swim and was afraid of splashing in case the shark came back … she thought she was going to drown,” she said. Masutti thanked bystanders who rushed to Zhang’s aid and staff at St George Hospital. “She was brought around this morning and first thing she said was, ‘I should be dead and that guy saved my life’ (thank you Blake in particular, Ellen, Josh, Roger, Tomako and all those that rallied around),” Masutti continued. “Mani is now comfortable and in surprisingly good spirits and intends to buy a lottery ticket.” Camera IconBystanders and paramedics are pictured attending to Mangyon Zhang after she was attacked. Credit: Kevin McKayCamera IconA witness said bystanders quickly jumped into the water to pull her out. Credit: Kevin McKay Zhang was alone 10 metres from shore when she was bitten. A bull shark had been spotted several times in recent weeks, with authorities saying the species was likely responsible based on images of Zhang’s bite wound. “Sutherland Shire Council has advised local beaches, including Cronulla Beach, Elouera Beach, North Cronulla Beach, Wanda Beach, Greenhills Beach, Horderns Beach, Gunyah Beach and Silver Beach, are closed until further notice,” the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development said. “DPIRD will continue to work with NSW Police and SLS NSW to monitor the area and provide any technical advice and resources if required.” Bull sharks, which can thrive in both freshwater and saltwater environments, are one of the world’s the most dangerous and aggressive shark species. They favour shallow, coastal waters, but are known to travel far up rivers – areas that are popular with surfers and swimmers. 8. Tesla (TSLA) Maintains “Buy” Rating as AI and Robotics Drive Growth Potential Tesla (TSLA) Maintains “Buy” Rating as AI and Robotics Drive Growth Potential We recently published a list of Top 10 AI Stocks Dominating the Market Right Now. In this article, we are going to take a look at where Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) stands against other top AI stocks dominating the market right now. Attention is slowly shifting from US chip stocks to what analysts consider as the next big AI play: software. Investor enthusiasm has begun waning for semiconductor stocks due to tariff-driven volatility and the emergence of lower cost AI models from China’s DeepSeek. The AI chips transition is now paving the way for the second stage of the innovation cycle where software companies will begin to monetize AI breakthroughs. READ ALSO: 10 Hot AI News Updates Analysts are Monitoring and 10 High-Potential AI Stocks to Watch Right Now “The second stage of the innovation cycle is when people start utilizing products and that’s when the software companies start getting paid … we’re now starting to see the ascendancy of the software part of the equation.” Previously, software startups such as Harvey were dismissed by Silicon Valley investors. Investors used to take these software firms lightly, stating them as mere wrappers around OpenAI’s models. However, now the narrative is shifting and these AI wrappers are becoming quite popular today. “The market’s perception of companies like us… was that they’re GPT wrappers, referencing a derisive term used to suggest the repackaging of OpenAI’s models. If investors “were going to put money into something,” he added, “it needed to be into OpenAI or Anthropic.” Here is what another investor has to say: “Just like after the iPhone launched, there were millions of new mobile apps,” said Mignano, an investor in the AI notetaking service Granola, which uses technology from OpenAI and Anthropic. “Now with AI and LLMs, there will be millions of new AI products.” DeepSeek has also played its due part in leading the shift from chip stocks to software and similar AI plays. “Investors are looking for the next three-to-five-year stories … those companies that are going to benefit from what Nvidia has already done.” For this article, we selected AI stocks by going through news articles, stock analysis, and press releases. These stocks are also popular among hedge funds. The hedge fund data is as of Q4 2024. Why are we interested in the stocks that hedge funds pile into? The reason is simple: our research has shown that we can outperform the market by imitating the top stock picks of the best hedge funds. Our quarterly newsletter’s strategy selects 14 small-cap and large-cap stocks every quarter and has returned 373.4% since May 2014, beating its benchmark by 218 percentage points (see more details here). Story Continues Tesla (TSLA) Maintains “Buy” Rating as AI and Robotics Drive Growth Potential Number of Hedge Fund Holders: 126 Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) is an automotive and clean energy company that leverages advanced artificial intelligence in its autonomous driving technology and robotics initiatives. On March 6, Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas maintained a “Buy” rating on the stock and kept the price target at $430.00. Jones is particularly bullish on Tesla’s ability to capitalize on the rise of electric vehicles which are being driven by advancements in AI and robotics. Tesla is at the forefront of technological progress that is leading the shift. Tesla is also making huge strides in humanoid robots, which is another area of growing interest. Combining this with the company’s potential to leverage large-scale video data for autonomous systems, the company is well-positioned in the race for AI-driven innovations. Overall, TSLA ranks 6th on our list of top AI stocks dominating the market right now. While we acknowledge the potential of TSLA as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns and doing so within a shorter time frame. 10. JD Vance says he and his daughter, 3, were confronted by a group of pro-Ukraine protesters JD Vance says he and his daughter, 3, were confronted by a group of pro-Ukraine protesters Vice President JD Vance says he was confronted by pro-Ukraine protesters on Saturday while out walking with his three-year-old daughter, who became “increasingly anxious and scared” by their shouts. Vance has become the target of protesters in support of the U.S. defense of Ukraine against Russia’s invasion, now in its fourth year, after his part in the disastrous Oval Office meeting between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The vice president was seen by many as instigating an attack on Zelensky that quickly escalated into a shouting match in front of the world’s media, leading to international condemnation. As the U.S. has withdrawn support from its ally, Russia has stepped up attacks on Ukraine. There were demonstrations in support of Kyiv on Saturday in Europe and in Washington, D.C. The vice president wrote on X: “Today while walking my 3 year old daughter a group of ‘Slava Ukraini’ protesters followed us around and shouted as my daughter grew increasingly anxious and scared.” “I decided to speak with the protesters in the hopes that I could trade a few minutes of conversation for them leaving my toddler alone. (Nearly all of them agreed.),” he continued. “It was a mostly respectful conversation, but if you’re chasing a 3-year-old as part of a political protest, you’re a s*** person.” Not everyone was sympathetic. Tim Miller, of The Bulwark, tweeted: “Dozens are dead in Ukraine because you stopped giving them the intelligence that protected the country from bombs so you can probably handle some yelling in a free country boss. “When @RoKhanna brought up children JD accused him of emotional manipulation. Two weeks later he’s using his 3 year old as a shield for the disastrous policies he’s implanting. Keep it.” Journalist John Harwood tweeted: “If you endanger a group of immigrants by telling outrageous lies about them, or withhold intelligence to make it easier for Russia to kill innocent Ukrainians, you’re a s*** person.” This is not the first time Vance has been confronted by demonstrators since the Zelensky meeting. The vice president and his family were also greeted by angry protesters on vacation in Vermont, who told him to “go ski in Russia.” Ahead of Vance’s visit and before the Oval Office drama, Republican Gov. Phil Scott issued a statement Thursday welcoming Vance and his family to the state. He asked Vermont residents to do the same, even if they have political differences with the vice president. “I hope Vermonters remember the vice president is here on a family trip with his young children and, while we may not always agree, we should be respectful,” the statement said. DOGE has reportedly started rolling out a custom chatbot to automate some government tasks DOGE has reportedly started rolling out a custom chatbot to automate some government tasks Employees of the General Services Administration, which manages government real estate and certain IT efforts, have been given a custom chatbot from Elon Musk’s DOGE to help automate tasks, according to a new report from Wired, with an internal memo telling workers it can be used to “draft emails, create talking points, summarize text, write code.” The chatbot, GSAi, gives users a choice of three models — Claude Haiku 3.5 (the default), Claude Sonnet 3.5 v2 and Meta Llama 3.2 — and is ultimately meant to be used to “analyze contract and procurement data,” Wired reports. The GSA is one of the many agencies that have been affected by the federal government’s mass job cuts, and has so far let go upwards of 1,000 workers, sources told NPR in a report published this week. That includes roughly 90 people from its tech branch, according to Wired. In memos about the new chatbot seen by Wired, workers were told not to input “federal nonpublic information,” personally identifiable information or “controlled unclassified information.” It was reportedly tested among a smaller group last month before rolling out to the roughly 1,500 workers who now have access, with plans to expand down the line. Perth might have its best ever chance of claiming a maiden *********** Idol crown with three talented local performers qualifying for season 10’s top 12. John Van Beek, 19, Gisella Colletti, 17, and Hannah Waddell, 25, do not share the same path to the Idol stage, but their talents are equally abundant. Moving from Kalamunda to East Perth in primary school, Van Beek’s introduction to singing came as a consequence of a severe arm injury that ended his career in trampolining after also showing promise as a youth platform diver and gymnast. “I felt like a little bit of an Olympian at a young age,” he told The Sunday Times this week. With his parents encouraging him to remain busy, delving into dance, picking up the clarinet and joining choirs, the teen switched focus from discipline-based endeavours towards expressive ones. Now, audiences could be witnessing the rise of Australia’s answer to acrobatic sensation Benson Boone, who first drew attention with his American Idol audition before flipping off a piano at the Grammys. “Look, if that guy can do it, just being a simple dude, showing what he’s got, and people believing in him, I’ve got something to show as well,” Van Beek said. Camera IconGisella Colletti, John Van Beek, Hannah Waddell. Credit: Jeremy Greive Enrolled at WAAPA last year and performing at Telethon in their gospel choir that supported original Idol winner Guy Sebastian, he sought feedback from the “*********** Idol legend himself” regarding how to prepare for the competition. “He gave me some awesome feedback; to just be myself and just take in the process because it’s amazing and it goes so quick,” he said. Fellow teen Colletti is enjoying the support of Corpus Christi College in Bateman as the school’s resident national anthem singer and star stage performer. Welcomed into the idol family by another familiar face in judge Marcia Hines, the young girl with the big voice was left stunned by Hines’ shock visit to her family home while on tour in Perth last year. “All of a sudden the door opens and Marcia’s like, ‘Hello, Gisella’ — and it’s Marcia Hines,” she recalled. “I just started bawling my eyes out. And then Dad’s bawling, and then Mum start bawling. It was such an incredible moment.” Invited to perform for Hines the same night at the singer’s show at Crown Perth, the appearance became Colletti’s successful audition, handed a golden ticket to the top 30. For Doubleview’s Waddell — a bartender by day and disco queen by night — her journey to the spotlight has not been a straightforward one. Supporting local acts while honing her own craft, the artist has been “grinding” since 2017 after landing an online music show in Sydney with MTV she hoped would be her big break after success on YouTube. “It didn’t do too well. And that was a bit of a letdown at 17, thinking ‘Far out, I thought I was going to make it’,” she said. Recognised for her stylish specs, Waddell has talents that often go unseen including her ability to communicate via sign language, as well as her proficiency with the guitar and piano. Joking she “couldn’t remember a single thing during any performance that I’ve done” on the show, the blonde plans to be more present going forward to recall the judges’ feedback. “Every time I watch it back on TV, it’s quite nice, because it’s like hearing it for the first time,” she said. 19. Adrian Barich: The 75 Hard Challenge has only just come across my desk, so I’m six years behind as usual Adrian Barich: The 75 Hard Challenge has only just come across my desk, so I’m six years behind as usual OK, please humour me and pretend that you also have not heard of the 75 Hard Challenge (or just 75 Hard as the cool kids say). Apparently it’s been around since 2019 on TikTok and is sweeping the Perth suburbs. Unsurprisingly, it has only just come across my desk this week; that’s right, I’m six years behind the times, as usual. Mind you, I want you to know that you’re dealing with a bloke who only found out last month from his daughter that the famous lyric in the song Don’t Bring Me Down by the Electric Light Orchestra was not, in fact, “don’t bring me down, Bruce” but “don’t bring me down, groos”. Apparently songwriter Jeff Lynne made it up. I cringe when I think about how many times I have sung that line out loud. What a loser. I’m obviously a bit slow on the uptake sometimes, so there is a good chance you have already heard about the 75 Hard Challenge and you know it’s a journey of discipline, mental toughness, maybe a little gnashing of teeth and even some crying. Created by entrepreneur Andy Frisella, the program promises to transform not just your body, but your mind. It’s a hardcore 75-day commitment to a set of rules designed to test your physical and mental limits — think of it as the fitness equivalent of Survivor without the TV cameras or a tropical island. For 75 days, you must adhere to five simple rules that sound easy enough on paper but in truth are almost impossible to adhere to. And you know the amazing bit? Many young men I know are following this new form of medieval punishment. Here’s the five tasks (or the five labours of Hercules as I’ve dubbed them). First, follow a diet. There’s no prescribed diet, so feel free to eat like a rabbit or a bodybuilder — but stick to something healthy. And here’s the tough bit: no alcohol. Second, exercise twice a day for at least 45 minutes per session. One of those workouts has to be outdoors. Third, drink a gallon of water, which is almost four litres of the good stuff in our country. By the time you’re done, you’ll feel like a camel but hey, that’s the point, I think. Fourth, read 10 pages of a non-fiction book per day. I love this one as young people will be forced to move into the self-help and personal growth genre. Forget about the The Hunger Games or Twilight, it’s Tony Robbins for you . . . or at least someone who knows a lot about discipline and hydration. And the final rule: take a progress photo every day. This isn’t just for vanity; it’s to help you see how your body is changing over time. Here’s the kicker: if you miss a single task, you have to start over. Miss your morning water intake? Congratulations, you’re back at square one. Miss a workout? Sorry, back to the first day you go. Forget to read? Day one. No selfie? Day one. It’s like your least favourite Groundhog Day scenario, but without the giant squirrel. But the appeal of the 75 Hard Challenge lies in the fact that it’s hard. People like a challenge and this one’s so extreme you can brag about it at parties for the next decade. If you survive it, you’ll walk around with a swagger that says, “yeah, I’ve done things other people only dream of — and, by the way, I haven’t eaten a cheat meal or ice-cream or chocolate or chips in 75 days”. If you think that this all sounds a bit too extreme, good news: someone has just invented a “75 Soft Challenge”. For that, do the following every day for 75 days: Eat well and only drink alcohol on social occasions. Train for 45 minutes every day, with one day of active recovery every week. Drink three litres of water a day. Read 10 pages of any book (reading fiction is good for keeping memory sharp because it requires the brain to remember characters and plot lines; I’ve added my own Barra touch here and allowed audiobooks as well). And just a final thought, please consult your doctor before starting any of the above. Frisella explains that the point of the 75 Hard Challenge is to help you achieve confidence, self-esteem, self-worth, grit, perseverance, and resilience. He reckons that by pushing yourself to stay committed to these goals, and developing discipline even when it gets hard or uncomfortable, you will emerge after 75 days a “different” person. He “guarantees” it. The real goal is to “push yourself exponentially further than you’ve ever thought you were capable of”. 20. General among dozens killed in attack on UN helicopter evacuation in South Sudan General among dozens killed in attack on UN helicopter evacuation in South Sudan NAIROBI (Reuters) -A South Sudanese general and dozens of soldiers were killed on Friday when a United Nations helicopter trying to evacuate them from the northern town of Nasir came under attack, the government said. The United Nations said the incident, which could deal a blow to an already fragile peace process, was “utterly abhorrent” and a possible war crime. The U.N. crew was trying to airlift soldiers following heavy clashes in Nasir between national forces and the White Army militia, a group which President Salva Kiir’s government has linked to forces loyal to his rival and First Vice President Riek Machar. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. In a national address announcing the deaths of General Majur Dak and other soldiers, Kiir said Machar had assured him and the U.N. representative that the general would be safe and that the rescue mission should fly to Nasir to evacuate him and his men. Information Minister Michael Makuei told reporters that “approximately 27” troops were killed. A U.N. crew member was among the dead. It was not immediately clear if the helicopter was hit as it was in the air or if the attack took place while it was still on the ground. Machar’s spokesman Puok Both Baluang declined to comment on the attack. Machar’s party has previously denied involvement in the recent fighting in Nasir. The head of the U.N. Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Nicholas Haysom, said the attack was “utterly abhorrent” and may constitute a war crime under international law. “We also regret the killing of those that we were attempting to extract, particularly when assurances of safe passage had been received. UNMISS urges an investigation to determine those responsible and hold them accountable,” he said. Machar’s spokesman said earlier this week that security forces had arrested the petroleum minister, the peacebuilding minister, the deputy head of the army and other senior military officials allied with Machar, potentially jeopardising the 2018 peace deal which ended a civil war between Kiir’s and Machar’s forces. The government has not commented on the detentions and all the detained officials, apart from the peacebuilding minister, remain in custody or under house arrest, according to Machar’s spokesman. The White Army, which mostly comprises armed youth from the Nuer ethnic group, fought alongside Machar’s forces in the 2013-2018 civil war that pitted them against predominantly ethnic Dinka troops loyal to Kiir. Kiir on Friday reiterated that the country would not return to war, but analysts have warned that the escalating tensions could lead to a full-blown conflict. The U.N. in a statement urged “all actors to refrain from further violence and for the country’s leaders to urgently intervene to resolve tensions through dialogue and ensure that the security situation in Nasir, and more broadly, does not deteriorate”. South Sudan has formally been at peace since the 2018 agreement ended the five-year war that killed an estimated 400,000 people, but clashes between rival communities break out frequently. The U.N. mission in South Sudan was established soon after the country won independence from Sudan in 2011. Almost 20,000 peacekeepers from 73 countries serve in it. 22. Voll’s brilliance brings an end to Perry’s WPL dream Voll’s brilliance brings an end to Perry’s WPL dream Rising star Georgia Voll is the latest *********** batter to agonisingly miss out on becoming the first batter to score a century in India’s Women’s Premier League, leaving her feeling as if she may have blown a piece of history. Yet while left stranded on 99 not out for UP Warriorz as, extraordinarily, Voll became the fourth Aussie in 12 days to end up just short of the milestone in the 90s, the superb innings ended the WPL dreams of her illustrious compatriot Ellyse Perry for another year on Saturday. Voll, in Lucknow for less than a week after downing tools on her house renovation in Brisbane and flying out as a last-minute Warriorz replacement, could hardly have made more of a swift striking impression. Voll succumbed to a jet-lagged, three-ball duck on Monday, awoke to smack a dazzling half-century on Thursday then graduated to all-round excellence in the player-of-the-match display on Saturday in the 12-run win over Perry’s Royal Challengers Bengaluru. She wasn’t just content with smashing 17 fours and a six off 56 deliveries to equal the record for the WPL’s highest individual score, held by New Zealander Sophie Devine, as the Warriorz, asked to bat, compiled an all-time tournament-high 5-225. For Voll then took two key early catches and nervelessly nailed the death over, whipping off the bails after just three ****** to complete a last-wicket run-out and ensure RCB’s exhilarating chase was finally snuffed out for 213. But Voll couldn’t help sounding a mite frustrated. Asked if she felt she had missed out on a golden chance of the historic ton, she admitted: “I think I did.” On 98 and facing the spin of England’s Charlie Dean for the final ball, Voll mused afterwards: “I should have known she would bowl that [yorker].” She managed only to shovel it to mid-on, with her partner Deepti Sharma being run out while thinking about coming back for an impossible second run. It was the latest near-miss by an Aussie in what’s becoming a seemingly cursed quest for that elusive first hundred. Eight innings in the nineties’ have now been compiled, six from Australians. Four have occurred in the last fortnight – Voll, Beth Mooney’s 96no for the Gujarat Giants on Monday, 92 for Delhi captain Meg Lanning on Friday and 90no for Perry 12 days ago. Perry looked in the mood for another crack as she smacked 28 off her first 15 ******, becoming the season’s top-scorer in the process on 323 runs. But after she was bowled by Anjali Sarvani, it was down to brilliant efforts from Richa Ghosh and tail-ender Sneh Rana to try to save the champions. Ghosh clouted 69 off 33 ****** with five huge sixes while Rana hit 26, the most by any batter in a single over in the WPL, off Deepti, who conceded a record 28 in all in that penultimate over. It meant RCB were knocked out alongside the already eliminated Warriorz, with Lanning’s Delhi, Ash Gardner’s Gujarat and Mumbai Indians now being the play-off contenders in the coming week. NEAREST MISSES IN THE 100 QUEST IN THE WPL: * 99no – Georgia Voll (UP Warriorz, 2025) * 99 – Sophie Devine (Royal Challengers Bangalore, 2023) * 96no – Alyssa Healy (UP Warriorz, 2023) * 96no – Beth Mooney (Gujarat Giants, 2025) * 95no – Harmanpreet Kaur (Mumbai Indians, 2024) * 92 – Meg Lanning (Delhi Capitals, 2025) * 90no – Tahlia McGrath (UP Warriorz, 2023) * 90no – Ellyse Perry (Royal Challengers Bengaluru 2025). 23. A car pulled from a river may tell what happened to an Oregon family of 5 that went missing in 1958 A car pulled from a river may tell what happened to an Oregon family of 5 that went missing in 1958 After two days of dredging, a crane on Friday pulled from the Columbia River a Ford station wagon that officials believe belonged to an Oregon family who disappeared while on a trip 66 years ago to find Christmas greenery. No human remains were found in the vehicle, which was pulled out of the water on Friday afternoon in a process that took about 10 minutes. The vehicle’s body, which was visible in videos shot by divers, came off during the lifting and only the frame and wheels came out of the water. The car will be wrapped and sent to a warehouse, where a forensic team will try to learn more about its owners, said Pete Hughes, a Hood River County Sheriff’s deputy. But officials felt certain the found the car they were looking for, he said. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. “Everything matches,” he said. “It appears to be the color, make and model of the Martin vehicle.” Disappearance made national news The search for the Martin family was a national news story at the time and led some to speculate about the possibility of foul play, with a $1,000 reward offered for information. “Where do you search if you’ve already searched every place logic and fragmentary clues would suggest?” an Associated Press article wondered in 1959, months after the disappearance. The bodies of two of the family’s children were found in the river later that year, though the remaining members never turned up. Salvage efforts were called off just before dark on Thursday and resumed early Friday as crews tried to clear mud that buried much of the car. The station wagon thought to belong to Ken and Barbara Martin was found last fall by Archer Mayo, a diver who had been looking for it for seven years, said Mayo’s representative, Ian Costello. Mayo pinpointed the likely location and dove several times before finding the car upside-down about 50 feet (15 meters) deep, covered in mud, salmon guts, silt and mussel shells, Costello said. “This is a very big development in a case that’s been on the back of Portland’s mind for 66 years,” Costello told The Associated Press. Mayo found other cars nearby, Costello said. Hughes, the Hood River County sheriff’s deputy, said one car had been previously identified and the second was an unknown Volkswagen. Investigators will now work on finding identification numbers from the engine and chassis of the car to make sure it is the Martins’ vehicle. The rest of the car body will remain in the river for now, Hughes said. An ill-fated Christmas trip The Martins took their daughters — Barbara, 14; Virginia, 13; and Sue, 11 — on a ride to the mountains on Dec. 7, 1958, to collect Christmas greenery, according to AP stories from the time. The children left the Sunday newspaper comics scattered about their home. Dishes remained in the sink and a load of laundry in the washing machine. They never returned. Officials narrowed their search for the family after learning that Ken Martin had used a credit card to buy gas at a station near Cascade Locks, a small Columbia River community about 40 miles (64 kilometers) east of Portland. “Police have speculated that Martin’s red and white station wagon might have plunged into an isolated canyon or river,” the AP reported. “The credit card purchase was the only thing to pinpoint the family’s movements.” A waitress reported seeing a family that could have been the Martins at the Paradise Snack Bar, east of Cascade Locks, just before sunset. The family had been out looking for a Christmas tree. They ordered hamburgers, fries, milk and dessert. The bill came to $4.15. Five months after their disappearance, the body of the youngest daughter was found “bobbing in a Columbia River slough,” according to the AP. “The body of Susan apparently floated free of the wreckage in the spring current and was washed to a back water slough near Camas, Washington,” the AP wrote. Virginia Martin’s body was found the next day about 25 miles (40 kilometers) upstream from where her sister’s was located. The other family members were never found, but the search continued. The Martins had a 28-year-old son, Don, who was a Marine veteran and graduate student at Columbia University in New York at the time and told the AP he believed his family was dead. Vehicle found by longtime sleuth “It’s been a high public interest case,” Hughes told the AP on Thursday. After Mayo provided part of the license plate number and other vehicle identifiers, the sheriff’s office and the Columbia Gorge major crimes team, along with the Oregon State Crime Lab, arranged to have the car pulled out, he said. Mayo runs a business that finds things that were lost in the river, like watches and rings, but also helps with the recovery of drowning victims, Costello said. He had been looking for a research vessel that sank in 2017 when he learned about the Martin family, Costello said. Mayo began digging up material on the family and used modeling to pinpoint the possible location, he said. ___ Associated Press journalists Sarit Hand and ****** Herschaft in New York contributed to this report.
