  1. May 2026 is new release date for Rockstar’s sequel May 2026 is new release date for Rockstar’s sequel Grand Theft Auto 6 – one of the most eagerly awaited releases of all time – has been delayed until May 2026. The sequel in developer Rockstar Games’ record-breaking video game series was due to be released on consoles later this year. But it told fans it needed extra time to “deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve”. The previous game in the series, GTA 5, is the second-best selling video game of all time and remains extremely popular thanks to its online mode. Little official information on GTA 6 has emerged since a trailer for the game was released in December 2023, quickly reaching over 100m views. In its statement, Rockstar said the “interest and excitement” in the game had been “truly humbling for our entire team.” The company is known for its long development cycles and the 12-year gap since GTA 5’s release has sparked a wave of jokes and memes online. It also has a track record of delaying major releases, such as 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2 – the studio’s last big new game. But Rockstar is also known for its perfectionist approach and Straus Zelnick, CEO of parent company Take Two Interactive, previously said each new Rockstar game “needs to be something you’ve never seen before.” Source link #release #date #Rockstars #sequel Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  2. Grand Theft Auto VI is Now Coming May 26, 2026 Grand Theft Auto VI is Now Coming May 26, 2026 Rockstar Games is reportedly looking to incorporate user-generated content similar to Roblox and Fortnite for Grand Theft Auto VI. The developer has apparently already met with a number of major Roblox and Fortnite creatures about the possibility of building custom experiences in GTA VI, with Rockstar reportedly planning to allow the game’s environment and assets to be modified by creators to implement their own IP into the sandbox. 3. Microsoft makes passkeys the default authentication method for all new accounts Microsoft makes passkeys the default authentication method for all new accounts Microsoft now uses passkeys by default for all new accounts, helping its users stay secure by ensuring that their passwords can’t be stolen by not having one. Microsoft will ask you for an email address when creating an account for the first time. It will then send a verification code to confirm your identity, and once done, it will become your default credential for your new account. After you’ve created your Microsoft account and signed in, the company will ask you to add a passkey. Once you have done so, you can use Windows Hello or your device’s biometric security features to access your account. Passkeys have been around for almost a decade, with Windows 10 getting support for passwordless sign-in in July 2015. However, it took some time for the standard to gain traction, with Google, Apple, and Microsoft rolling it out to their respective operating systems in 2022. Furthermore, personal Microsoft accounts only received this feature in 2024. Still, this is a welcome development, as it will make accessing your Microsoft account easier and more secure. After all, this is one less password you need to remember among the hundreds, if not thousands, of passwords you keep for your numerous accounts. Microsoft wants to kill passwords The company has updated the user experience for its login pages by detecting the best authentication method from the start instead of offering all the possible options. “For example, if you have a password and “one-time code” set up on your account, we’ll prompt you to sign in with your one-time code instead of your password. After you’re signed in, you’ll be prompted to enroll a passkey. Then the next time you sign in, you’ll be prompted to sign in with your passkey,” said Microsoft Identity & Network Access President Joy Chik and Microsoft Security Corporate VP Vasu Jakkal. “This simplified experience gets you signed in faster and, in our experiments, has reduced password use by over 20%. As more people enroll passkeys, the number of password authentications will continue to decline until we can eventually remove password support altogether.” Passwordless accounts will make it harder for bad actors to illicitly access accounts, as they can no longer steal credentials through phishing, keylogging, SIM swapping, and more. And even if you lose your passkey device, you’re still protected, as anyone who wants to access your data must use your biometrics to open it. Someone determined and with unlimited resources might still be able to circumvent passkey protection, but for the average person, this should be more than enough to increase their data security. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild When the Nintendo Switch launched in 2017, our expectations were high. The hybrid console instantly felt like a dream console, and the fact that it would launch with a brand new Legend of Zelda game was a good sign that Nintendo was ready to support it with high quality games. The bar was high right out the gate — and Nintendo cleared it time and time again over eight memorable years. The Nintendo Switch era isn’t fully ending anytime soon, but it will take a ********* to the age of Switch 2 on June 2. That impending date has left us reflecting on the bounty of games we’ve gotten on the platform since 2017. Third party developers returned to Nintendo in a big way with ports that helped widen the Switch’s library, but the console’s real calling card has been its exclusives. We got Nintendo’s studios at the top of their game here, reviving a wide swath of forgotten series while giving old standbys some of their best installments ever. Zelda, Mario, Fire Emblem, and more all made the Nintendo Switch a must-own device, and that good will is sure to spill over to Switch 2. To celebrate that history, we’re counting down our 20 favorite Switch exclusives of all time. For this list, we’ve focused on games that are only available on Switch. That means no games that were ported to other consoles later and no Wii U ports (sorry, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe). Even with those caveats, we had an incredibly hard time narrowing the list down to 20. In fact, this list was originally going to be a top 10, but that felt impossible. You’ll see why as soon as you see the final list, which could have been cut up and rearranged in hundreds of ways depending on your tastes. 20. Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics Nintendo Animal Crossing: New Horizons is remembered as 2020’s defining pandemic game, but Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics was just as important in my household. The simple collection pulled together tabletop games like Checkers and Shogi into a tactile and tightly design package that was custom built for bored families. It’s the least flashy game on this list, but it didn’t need to be. I personally spent hours upon hours playing Mancala with my partner at this time, which I’d never really tried before Clubhouse Games. The package did such a great job at explaining the rules that I ended up buying a real Mancala board after a week. Clubhouse Games‘ ability to teach and culturally contextualize 51 different games earns it a spot on this list among some mascot-filled heavy hitters. 19. Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope Ubisoft When Nintendo first announced that Mario was crossing over with Ubisoft’s Rabbids, it felt like a joke destined to become weird history. That wasn’t the case, as Ubisoft created a surprisingly great tactics game with Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. It was the start of a promising series that wouldn’t take long to fully realize its potential. Mario + Rabbid: Sparks of Hope builds on everything its predecessor did so well, doubling down on its action-packed turns that let players pull off so many moves at once. That was largely thanks to a reworked movement system that did away with the first game’s grid for something a little more flexible. The end result is the Switch’s best tactics game and a real contender for the best Mario spinoff ever. 18. Ring Fit Adventure Nintendo Perhaps more than any game on this list, Ring Fit Adventure is a prime example of why Nintendo’s knack for innovation is so commendable. It would have been easy to make a motion-controlled fitness game, ala Wii Fit, on Switch that just asked players to mimic exercises. Rather than settling for that, Nintendo created its own pilates ring and turned it into a controller for a full-scale RPG. Ring Fit Adventure is a brilliant approach to the fitness genre, one that understands that gradually building your muscles isn’t that far off from an traditional RPG grind. The little fights add up over time so long as your patient enough to keep up with them. It’s an inspired bit of game design from Nintendo that turned out to be a much-needed force for good during the years of social isolation that defined the platform. 17. Super Mario Bros. Wonder Nintendo It’s not surprising to see several great Mario games on a Nintendo console. What is more surprising is to see a stellar 2D Mario game these days that feels just as exciting as a 3D one. That’s what we got with the surprising Super Mario Bros. Wonder, a reinvention that the 2D Mario formula so desperately needed. Rather than aping the tired nostalgia of the New Super Mario Bros. series, Wonder gave Mario an expressive makeover, colorful new enemies, and a slew of creative wonder effects that completely spun the idea of a traditional platforming level on its head. While it doesn’t quite have the staying power of Mario’s best adventures, Wonder does a fantastic job at rediscovering the magic that made Mario’s first games so appealing in the first place. 16. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Nintendo The Switch era gave us several surprising collaborations with Koei Tecmo, both Zelda and Fire Emblem into Dynasty Warriors-like Musou games. These have been some of the Switch’s most niche exclusives, but they aren’t ones to ignore. That’s especially true of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. The Breath of the Wild pseudo-prequel takes players to the days before Calamity Ganon’s reign over Hyrule as Zelda tries to assemble an army of fighters to stop the impending disaster. The result is Zelda’s take on Rogue One, playing with history to tell a thrilling piece of alternate history that gave us the best characterization of the series’ titular princess ever. And of course, slashing up thousands of moblins in between all that is a cathartic joy all its own. 15. Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club Nintendo I’d wager that you won’t find Emio — The Smiling Man on a lot of lists celebrating the Switch’s library, but the eerie narrative adventure deserves its flowers. A surprising comeback for Nintendo’s Famicom Detective Club series, Emio tells a dark, mature story about a bag-faced serial killer stalking a quiet Japanese town. The tale plays out through a slow, grounded visual novel about childhood trauma and the ways that kids suffer in silence. It’s a deeply effective slow burn that still sticks in my mind today. And if nothing else, it’s a great example of how niche franchises thrived on the Switch thanks to Nintendo’s willingness to take more risks with its most forgotten franchises. 14. Astral Chain PlatinumGames Nintendo wasn’t the only company committed to making great Switch exclusives over the past eight years. PlatinumGames was the system’s third-party RPG, giving us the fantastic Bayonetta 3 as well as its surprisingly charming spinoff. Astral Chain might just be its crown jewel, though. The cyberpunk action game had players slashing through demons with both a cop and an entity chained to them. That concept opened the door for an experimental battle system that had players juggling two people at once and using the chain between them to perform maneuvers that weren’t just about pressing the right buttons. It’s one of the Switch’s most original games and one I’m hoping to see revisited on Switch 2. 13. Splatoon 3 Nintendo It took Nintendo three tries to really perfect its Splatoon series over a seven year blitz, but the final result is fantastic. Splatoon 3 is an excellent, fully-featured multiplayer effort that I wish more games would take notes from. It’s not just that it has a great suite of fun online modes. It also sports a killer campaign, a creative card minigame, a tense PVE mode, and even a worthwhile roguelike twist in its excellent Side Order DLC. Splatoon 3 proved that Nintendo’s inky series really can do it all, justifying the company’s aggressive push to make it a top franchise in the Switch era. 12. Bowser’s Fury Nintendo Super Mario Odyssey might be thought of as the Switch’s great 3D Mario game, but Bowser’s Fury isn’t far behind. Included as a pack-in game alongside a port of Super Mario 3D World, Bowser’s Fury imagined what a true open-world Mario game could look like. It created one fully traversable set of islands made up of transitional platforming levels that players can fluidly jump into. It’s not just a fun experiment with form, but an excellent, compact Mario game in its own right that I imagine paved the way for Mario Kart World in some way. We might look back on Bowser’s Fury and see it as one of the series’ most influential games by the end of the Switch 2 era, mark my words. 11. Tetris 99 Nintendo Tetris 99 is the Switch’s most unlikely success story, as far as I’m concerned. The Switch Online freebie felt like it was doomed when it was first announced. It sounded like Nintendo trying to capitalize on the battle royale trend of the era by needlessly stuffing it into Tetris. As it turned out, that elimination format is a perfect match for the puzzle series. A round of Tetris 99 is still thrilling to this day, forcing players to think fast in order to outplay 98 other players. Consistent updates have only built on that core fun, adding Nintendo-themed events, additional modes, and single-player content for traditional Tetris players. It may not be a reason to subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online, but it’s a fantastic perk that I’ve played more than most Switch games at this point. 10. Luigi’s Mansion 3 Nintendo A lot of games try to do comedy and wind up falling flat. Luigi’s Mansion 3 is the rare game that truly gets how to craft a genuienly funny game without relying too much on hammy writing. The ghost-hunting adventure accomplishes that by focusing on great slapstick comedy built around Luigi, one of Nintendo’s most expressive mascots. He’s a regular Buster Keateon in the adventure, jumping and screaming his way through a haunted house full of ghouls. That combines with strong puzzle design and an inventive vacuuming hook to create one of the Switch’s most delightful single-player adventures. 9. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Nintendo Depending on who you ask, the top 10 of this article could have featured several Xenoblade games. The RPG series really found its voice on Nintendo Switch, turning something niche into a mainstream phenomenon. You can see why that happened with the Game Awards-nominated Xenoblade Chronicles 3. The massive adventure tells a dense war tale set in one of the Switch’s most engrossing open-worlds. Battles feel enormous, utilizing an MMO-inspired combat system that lets players carve their foes up with flair. A short blurb can’t do it justice, as Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is a gigantic, systems-heavy accmplishment that needs to be played to be fully understood. What are you waiting for? 8. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Nintendo A modern Nintendo console is only as good as its Super Smash Bros. game in my book, so it’s no surprise that Ultimate is a pinnacle for the fighting series. Rather than inventing new gimmicks to freshen up a great formula, Nintendo simply went big by including every character that’s ever been in the series. The result is an enormous retrospective of video game history that pays tribute to a whole mess of iconic franchises from Mario to Persona. That’s all backed by its best in class brawling, which works both at a casual party level and in a serious competitive setting. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is an impossible act to follow up, which is perhaps why its creator is working on a Kirby Air Ride sequel for Switch 2 instead. 7. Kirby and the Forgotten Land Nintendo The Kirby series has always been one of Nintendo’s secret weapons, giving its studios a place to test out creative new ideas. Kirby and the Forgotten Land didn’t just follow that trend, but made Kirby undeniable. The delightful platformer is every bit as inventive as a 3D Mario game thanks to its wealth of mouthful powers that transform Kirby in ways never seen before. Like Luigi’s Mansion 3, it’s another great work of slapstick comedy that gets at what’s so appealing about Nintendo’s best characters. And through all of those bright colors and casual fun, Forgotten Land still weaves in a rich, lore-filled story that goes to some surprisingly challenging heights. It’s a terrific chapter for Kirby that I imagine will be remembered as a turning point for the series one day. 6. Animal Crossing: New Horizons Nintendo Animal Crossing: New Horizons may not be the very best Nintendo Switch game, but it’s undoubtedly the most important. Released in March 2020, it quickly became a primary way for people to connect when the Covid-19 pandemic forced people into lockdown. It’s a product of its time, but it isn’t just great because of circumstances. New Horizons is a fantastic installment of the Animal Crossing formula that spiced the life sim up with crafting, terraforming, and more. With much-needed online features that let multiple friends socialize together, New Horizons had everything it needed to become the right game for the right moment. It couldn’t have taken on that role if the foundation wasn’t excellent. 5. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo Following up Breath of the Wild felt like a truly impossible task by 2022, but the fact that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom pulled it off is a testament to what the sequel does so well. Rather than starting from scratch, Nintendo turned Breath of the Wild’s open-world into a more immersive sandbox in which players could craft dream machines. It completely changed the way players got around Hyrule, solved shrine puzzles, and took down enemies. While it wasn’t as much of a shocking surprise as Breath of the Wild was at launch, I still hold so many great stories from my time with Tears of the Kingdom, like the time I accidentally crashed a flaming airplane into a moblin camp in my very first hands-on with it. Those memories will stick with me forever. 4. Super Mario Odyssey Nintendo How can you reinvent the same series time and time again? That was a question plaguing Nintendo ahead of the Switch era, as it struggled to find new ways to spin Mario. In that sense, Super Mario Odyssey felt like a statement in Switch’s first year. The wildly creative installment brought the character to completely new worlds and changed the way he interacts with them thanks to the adventure’s signature hat possession. It was a total delight, and one that instantly proved that Nintendo still had plenty of creative juice left in the tank to fuel the Switch era. With its wealth of bite-sized challenges, Odyssey felt perfectly designed for a hybrid system and remains one of the best selling points for console-quality Nintendo games on the go. 3. Fire Emblem: Three Houses Nintendo Prior to the Switch’s release, Nintendo had gradually turned Fire Emblem into one of its flagship series. That effort came to a head in 2019 with Fire Emblem: Three Houses, the Switch’s absolute best RPG exclusive. On its surface, Three Houses is a familiar tactics game that revolves around an excellent rock-paper-scissors combat hook. That’s only one piece of a much ******* puzzle though, as the RPG is filled with engrossing systems. From teaching students to going on tea dates, Three Houses is the grandest entry in the Fire Emblem series yet, one that gives players more ways to connect to their heroes as a political drama brews in the background. I’ll forever hold onto my Golden Deer pride, even when the Switch 2 sends me on another Fire Emblem adventure. 2. Metroid Dread Nintendo It might be a little surprising to see Metroid Dread beating out the likes of Mario and Fire Emblem here, but there’s a good reason it’s our runner up. When we asked our writers to pick their favorite game of 2021 years ago, Metroid Dread was their unanimous game of the year choice — and I still agree with that vote. The 2D adventure wasn’t just a welcome return for one of Nintendo’s best series, but an atmospheric masterclass that brought Samus’ long saga to unsettling new heights. Dread tells a story of chickens coming home to roost, as Samus has to face the consequences of the reckless bounty hunting of her early career. It’s a gripping story reinforced by challenging combat, excellent exploration, and sharp controls that pushed the Metroidvania genre forward. Dread may not be as universally known as Super Mario Odyssey, but its perfectly executed vision is hard to argue with. 1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Nintendo What can you say about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild that hasn’t already been said. The open-world didn’t just redefine the Zelda series; it changed the way developers approach the genre, *******. With more open-ended gameplay that was less about looking at a map and more about fluidly exploring a world, Breath of the Wild felt like the start of a mental shift towards making games about discovery again. We saw its formula taken to new heights in Elden Ring and even smaller ones in indies like A Short Hike. Within eight years, it felt as foundational to gaming’s DNA as Super Mario Bros. Tears of the Kingdom may have expanded on that idea even more, but Breath of the Wild still earns its spot at the top for its elegance and clarity of ambition that’ll keep it at the top of “best games of all time” lists for the next few decades. Honorable mentions: Bayonetta 3, Cadence of Hyrule, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Mario Party Superstars, New Pokémon Snap, Pikmin 4, Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Snipperclips, Super Mario Maker 2, WarioWare: Move It!, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Source link #Nintendo #Switch #exclusives #time Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Apple clears Spotify app update that allows purchases Apple clears Spotify app update that allows purchases Daniel Ek, co-founder and chief executive officer of Spotify Technology SA, during the Acquired LIVE event at the Chase Center in San Francisco, California, US, on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2024. David Paul Morris | Bloomberg | Getty Images Spotify on Friday said Apple has approved the company’s U.S. app update, which will allow users to access pricing information, links to make purchases and select from more payment options within the music streaming app. The approval comes after a U.S. federal judge on Wednesday ordered Apple to stop imposing the commissions it makes on purchases through web links inside an iPhone app. Spotify acted quickly on the order, submitting a new app update on Thursday. “After nearly a decade, this will finally allow us to freely show clear pricing information and links to purchase,” Spotify spokesperson Jeanne Moran said in a statement. “There is more work to do, but today represents a significant milestone for developers and entrepreneurs everywhere who want to build and compete on a more level playing field,” she added. Spotify users will now be able to see how much something costs in the app, including information on the company’s subscriptions and promotions. Users can purchase their subscription of choice through the app, and upgrade or change their plan if they choose. Spotify said customers can also use payment methods other than Apple’s system through the update, according to a blog post. Apple said Wednesday it will comply with the court’s order, but strongly disagrees with the decision and will appeal. 7. Trump says his administration is revoking Harvard’s tax-exempt status Trump says his administration is revoking Harvard’s tax-exempt status Harvard, White House in court over funding Harvard, Trump administration have court hearing over funding threats 02:30 Washington — President Trump said Friday his administration will be rescinding Harvard University’s tax-exempt status, further escalating the ongoing feud with the Ivy League school. “We are going to be taking away Harvard’s Tax Exempt Status. It’s what they deserve!” the president said in a post to Truth Social. Mr. Trump did not provide further details about the effort to strip Harvard of its designation as a 501(c)(3) organization, but he has floated taking such a step as recently as last month. Roughly 2 million organizations have received tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service, including charities like churches, environmental groups and universities. The designation means the groups are exempt from paying federal income taxes and the IRS considers donations to 501(c)(3) organizations to be tax-deductible. Mr. Trump’s decision is the latest in a series of moves targeting the university. His administration announced last month that it would be freezing $2.2 billion in grants and $60 million in contracts to Harvard after the university rejected a series of demands made by the administration. Among the conditions were for Harvard to discontinue its diversity, equity and inclusion programs, positions and initiatives, change its hiring practices and change its leadership. After the Trump administration announced it would be freezing the funding to Harvard, the university sued and alleged the move was unlawful. It’s likely a withdrawal of Harvard’s tax-exempt status will prompt further legal action. Melissa Quinn Melissa Quinn is a politics reporter for CBSNews.com. 8. Gold stems sell-off on signs of easing US-China trade tensions Gold stems sell-off on signs of easing US-China trade tensions Gold was modestly higher in early trade on Friday after continuing its sell off from the record high of $3,500 hit early last week. It came within a couple of dollars of $3,260. This comes ahead of the US non-farm payrolls report due later today, after prices touched a two-week low in the previous session. Signs of easing US-China trade tensions has kept the safe-haven metal on track for its second weekly fall. Non-farm payrolls likely increased by 130,000 jobs in April after rising by 228,000 in March, a Reuters survey showed. “Gold still needs to blow off some of the froth from the last leg of its strong rally,” David Morrison, senior market analyst at FCA regulated fintech and financial services provider Trade Nation, said. “But it’s possible it could achieve this, and reset the MACD to more neutral levels, through an extended ******* of consolidation. If it can manage this without another significant leg down, long-term gold bulls should happily take that as a victory. “Such a move has the potential to set the scene for a fresh leg of the rally, which, given sufficient momentum, could take it to fresh all-time highs. The alternative is that the high is already in, and any rallies should be used as opportunities for existing bulls to cut their exposure. Unfortunately, it’s just not possible to say with any confidence which is the most likely outcome.” Elsewhere, spot silver edged 0.1% higher to $32.42 an ounce, platinum rose 0.8% to $966.40 and palladium eased 0.2% to $939. COMEX – Delayed Quote • USD As of 8:40:04 GMT-4. Market open. The pound edged higher against the US dollar on Friday as American jobs figures are expected to show a drop in employment amid Donald Trump’s tariff war. The pound US Dollar exchange rate may rally if April’s payroll figures point to a cooling US labour market and stokes Federal Reserve interest rate cut expectations. The US Dollar Index (DX-Y.NYB), which tracks the greenback’s value against six major currencies, corrects to near 99.85 from an over two-week high of 100.38. CCY – Delayed Quote • USD As of 13:49:35 BST. Market open. Oil prices have fallen sharply from the record heights they hit after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine caused a global energy crisis. Brent crude, the international benchmark, was up 0.2% above $62 a barrel, although it remains on track for a weekly loss of more than 6%. It comes as Beijing said it is assessing an offer of talks from the US as the world’s two largest economies negotiate their hefty ****-for-tat tariffs. Story continues Crude has shed around 16% this year so far, touching a four-year low, as Donald Trump’s trade war has raised concerns about a economic downturn around the world that could hit demand. Maria Agustina Patti of Exness said: “Given the potential impact of trade tension on global economic activity and energy demand, the prospect of reduced tensions supported a shift in outlook for crude.” On Thursday afternoon crude oil bounced sharply after coming under relentless selling pressure throughout this week. Traders are fine-tuning their exposure ahead of Monday’s OPEC+ meeting amid reports from Reuters and other agencies that Saudi Arabia said it was prepared to live with lower oil prices. It comes as Shell’s adjusted profits were down from $7.4bn in the first quarter of 2024, or the record first-quarter profits of more than $9.6bn in 2023. 9. Apple updates its App Store guidelines to allow external payment options Apple updates its App Store guidelines to allow external payment options Apple has updated its App Store guidelines to comply with the orders of a California court, which required the company to immediately stop collecting commissions on purchases that weren’t paid through the App Store. As noticed by 9to5Mac, the most prominent change in the guidelines states that there are now no prohibitions on “buttons, external links, or other calls to action that direct customers to purchasing mechanisms other than in-app purchase,” as long as it’s for an app on the US storefront. Further, developers don’t have to request for an entitlement from Apple to be able to offer external link purchases on apps for the United States storefront anymore. In the section stating that certain applications, such as reader apps and apps that sell goods and services, cannot encourage users to opt for third-party purchasing methods in-app, Apple added that the prohibition doesn’t apply to apps on the US store. “The App Review Guidelines have been updated for compliance with a United States court decision regarding buttons, external links, and other calls to action in apps,” Apple said in a statement. These changes come as a result of a recent ruling by Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, who found that Apple violated her 2021 ruling for Epic Games’ lawsuit against Apple. Back then, she ordered Apple to allow developers to direct users to other payment systems that would let them avoid paying the company a 30 percent cut. However, Apple still took a 27 percent cut from external purchases, prompting Epic Games to accuse the company of non-compliance in a new legal filing last year. Apple also showed users a “scare screen” when they try to make external purchases, discouraging them from using third-party payment systems. In addition to ordering Apple to stop collecting fees from purchases made outside the App Store, Gonzalez Rogers also prohibited Apple from creating rules that would prevent developers from presenting customers with buttons and links for external payments In response, Epic chief Tim Sweeney announced that Fortnite will be coming back to iOS next week. He also said that the video game company will bring back Fortnite on iOS for everyone and will drop all litigation regarding the issue if Apple adopts the no-commission policy worldwide, but that doesn’t seem to be the case for now. Other companies are now also looking to roll out updates that would allow them to bypass Apple’s commission for external payments. One of them is Spotify, which announced that it had already submitted an update that would allow customers in the US to pay outside the App Store. 11. Apple to Source Billions of US-Made Chips in Supply Chain Shift Apple to Source Billions of US-Made Chips in Supply Chain Shift Apple plans to source more than 19 billion chips from the US this year, part of a global supply chain shift to gradually lessen its reliance on China and elevate India for iPhone production. Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook talked about leaning more heavily on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., which is expanding its Arizona operations to half a dozen plants. He also affirmed expectations that Apple will in future make the vast majority of its US-bound iPhones in India — reducing output from China as the Donald Trump administration threatens to slap punitive tariffs on its Asian rival. India was mentioned almost as many times as China on Thursday’s post-earnings conference call, reflecting its rising importance. Cook however was mum on a series of questions about how potential tariffs on consumer electronics may affect Apple’s business, saying “it’s very difficult to predict beyond June.” Chief Financial Officer Kevan Parekh said Apple’s commentary on the call assumes that current global tariff rates and policies remain in effect and that the global macroeconomic outlook doesn’t worsen. The Cupertino, California-based company’s much-awaited quarterly earnings report failed to soothe investor concerns about its biggest challenges, including escalating tariff costs and a slowdown in China. The company’s shares declined as much as 4.2 percent in late trading Thursday after Apple released second-quarter results that included worse-than-expected sales in China. Apple has accelerated its manufacturing expansion in India, which is both rising as a market — at a time when Apple’s China sales keep declining — and is likely to be a more politically favored US trade partner over the long run. Apple already makes 20 percent, or one in five, of its iPhones in the South Asian country. It expects to import most of the iPhones for the US from India by the end of next year. “We have a complex supply chain, there’s always risk in the supply chain,” Cook told analysts on the call. “What we learned some time ago was that having everything in one location had too much risk with it and so we have, over time, with certain parts of the supply chain, not the whole thing, but certain parts of it, opened up new sources of supply.” Beyond India, Trump wants Apple to begin building its devices in the US. But that’s unlikely to happen at scale in the foreseeable future. For now, Cook pledged to ramp up local procurement of chips and other components. The iPhone maker will obtain tens of millions of advanced processors from a new facility in Arizona operated by TSMC this year, Cook said. That’s started making processors for low-end iPads and Apple Watches, Bloomberg News has reported. Apple and TSMC have both announced US investments amounting to hundreds of billions of dollars in line with the White House’s push to bring advanced manufacturing to the country. Trump’s administration has imposed tariffs on goods imported from China and threatened additional levies to other nations who don’t negotiate new trade agreements over the coming weeks. Some electronics including iPhones are at present exempt. The Apple CEO also discussed how the company sources glass for iPhone screens from the US, likely referring to Corning Inc. Earlier this year, Apple said it would invest $500 billion (roughly Rs. 4,225 crore) in the US over the next four years, including by manufacturing AI servers at a plant in Texas. © 2025 Bloomberg LP (This story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is auto-generated from a syndicated feed.) 12. Fremantle Dockers belted by St Kilda and called disgraceful and embarrassing by Brownlow winner Gerard Healy Fremantle Dockers belted by St Kilda and called disgraceful and embarrassing by Brownlow winner Gerard Healy Fremantle have been described as disgraceful, horrendous and embarrassing after another shocking performance away from home and a 61-point loss to St Kilda at Marvel Stadium. The Dockers have made plenty of promises to each other this season after failing to perform against both Geelong and Melbourne but those words counted for nothing against the Saints as they lost 14.10 (94) to 5.3 (33). Fremantle produced their equal 10th lowest score ever and were belted all over the ground. The Saints destroyed them in the midfield, winning the clearances 50-22 and contested possessions 151-103. They refused to let the Dockers get the ball forward, restricting them to 34 inside 50s while having 61 of their own. Brownlow medallist Gerard Healy said the Dockers had been “embarrassing” and “horrendous.” “It’s a disgraceful performance and they’ve been humbled.” Healy said on SEN’s commentary. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen Fremantle play a worse game than this. It’s unbelievable.” Star pair Andrew Brayshaw and Caleb Serong couldn’t get their hands on the ball and Hayden Young suffered a hamstring injury during the first half. Brayshaw had 18 disposals and Serong managed just 15 – his lowest tally since his debut season. Camera IconAndrew Brayshaw was under pressure. Credit: Quinn Rooney/Getty Images The Dockers lacked the intensity that received wide acclaim against Adelaide last week and the backline was under constant pressure from a St Kilda line-up that had been under pressure all week. Fresh from being subbed out in the second term last week, Saints coach Ross Lyon teamed Hugo Garcia up with his captain Jack Steele to lock down on both Brayshaw and Serong. Brayshaw had only four touches and no clearances in the first term while Serong managed just two possessions. Only a strong marking performance from Fremantle’s key defenders stopped the Saints from opening up a big quarter time lead. The Saints managed only two goals from their 16 inside 50s. It could have been a lot worse but the Dockers trailed by just eight points at the first change. St Kilda dominated the second quarter and it was clear the Dockers weren’t concentrating. Camera IconSt Kilda controlled the game. Credit: Quinn Rooney/Getty Images Sam Switkowski failed to attack a ball in the middle of the ground and the Saints surged forward for a goal to Mitch Owens just two minutes into the term. Then they allowed Darcy Wilson to take a mark inside 50 and he nailed another major. When Young got lost coming onto the ground and went to the centre square instead of forward 50, the Dockers received a 6-6-6 warning and it summed up how distracted Fremantle looked. It took them nearly nine minutes to get the ball inside 50 and even that kick was marked uncontested by Cooper Sharman. Moments later, Matt Johnson double fisted a spoil out of bounds when he could have taken the mark and then Shai Bolton didn’t spot Garcia behind him and kept running, costing himself a shot for goal. The Dockers finally found some energy midway through the term but got no rewards because Michael Frederick missed the set shot. When Young then injured his hamstring and was subbed out of the game, the signs looked ominous. Camera IconHayden Young injured his hamstring. Credit: Quinn Rooney/Getty Images Fremantle failed to score a goal in the second term and went to half-time with just seven points on the board – their lowest tally under coach Justin Longmuir since COVID matches were played with reduced game time. All of the numbers around the game were just as ugly. They trailed the clearances 28-11. The were 6-1 down in centre cleraances. It was 82-59 for contested possessions. Serong had only seven touches. Bolton had five, Brayshaw had 10. They were miles off. Corey Wagner had 12 of the team’s 52 tackles. There were too many players who simply weren’t contributing. Yet somehow they were only 20 points down. That lead opened up to 26 points when Sharman kicked the first goal of the third quarter. Fremantle’s drought finally ended nine minutes into the term when Isaiah Dudley kicked a goal but St Kilda quickly answered and Longmuir made the rare move to come down to the bench. But he couldn’t fix the problems. Fremantle simply couldn’t score and St Kilda seized their chances at the other end. Camera IconCorey Wagner Credit: Michael Willson/AFL Photos/AFL Photos via Getty Images When Sharman kicked his third goal for the third term with a freakish snap from the forward pocket, the Saints led by 38 points and the only question was how big the defeat would be. Fremantle managed only five inside 50s for the third term. It was horrid. The Dockers trailed by 45 points when Mitch Owens kicked the first goal of the last quarter. Surely it couldn’t continue. Jye Amiss finally kicked a goal moments later but when Bolton got another opportunity, he sprayed the shot. Sharman didn’t waste his chance to boot his fourth though. Fremantle started looking anywhere for a lift. At the next centre bounce, Josh Draper rucked with Luke Jackson, Murphy Reid and Matt Johnson as his midfielders. That desperate move summed up the night and it kept getting worse. 13. Microsoft Surface team has ‘something new’ coming next week Microsoft Surface team has ‘something new’ coming next week Microsoft has teased a new Surface Copilot+ PC set to be revealed on May 6th, the company announced on X. “Something new is coming… find out next week,” the post states. The new model(s) will be revealed nearly two weeks before the company’s Build 2025 developer conference. That appears to be a change from last year when the company kicked off its Build 2024 event by launching two new Surface Copilot+ PCs the day before. The rumor mill has it that Microsoft is working on a smaller 11- or 12-inch Surface Pro to directly compete with Apple’s 11-inch iPad Pro. It may also be working on a Surface laptop with a Snapdragon X processor. Earlier this year, the company unveiled the new Intel-equipped Surface Pro (11th Edition) and Surface Laptop (7th Edition) for Business. It’s not clear whether Microsoft will hold an event to announce the new machines or just issue a press release. It also begs the question as to what hardware (if any) the company will announce at Build 2025. That conference kicks off on May 19 and is expected to be heavily focused on AI. 15. Top 5 Warren Buffett Stocks to Watch This Quarter Top 5 Warren Buffett Stocks to Watch This Quarter Warren Buffett’s investment decisions are always closely watched, and for good reason. Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:), the conglomerate he helms, has significantly outperformed the broader market in 2025, with shares up nearly 18% year-to-date. That strong performance only amplifies investor interest in the company’s portfolio moves. Each quarter, Berkshire’s 13F filing provides a detailed look at its equity holdings. The following report, covering positions as of the end of Q1 2025, is expected to be released by mid-May. While investors will have to wait a bit longer for the latest updates, the most recent filing from February 14 (reflecting Q4 2024 data) offers a clear view of Buffett’s biggest bets heading into the year. So ahead of the next 13F release, here’s a closer look at Berkshire’s top five equity holdings. These companies reflect Buffett’s disciplined, long-term investment strategy and continue to drive the firm’s performance. 1. Apple: Still the Largest Holding Despite Reductions in Recent Quarters Despite significant reductions in recent quarters, Apple (NASDAQ:) remains by far Berkshire’s largest holding. As of the last filing, the company held 300 million shares, representing nearly 28% of its equity portfolio. While Apple stock has faced headwinds in 2025, due to demand challenges, risk aversion, valuation concerns in the broader market, particularly with technology stocks, and concerns about tariffs, Buffett continues to praise its brand strength, customer loyalty, and robust cash flow. Even with trimming, Apple remains the cornerstone of Berkshire’s public stock investments. However, the upcoming 13F will reveal whether Buffett has made further adjustments and whether it remains the cornerstone of Berkshire’s portfolio. 2. American Express: A Decades-Long Bet Buffett’s relationship with American Express (NYSE:) stretches back to the 1960s, and his conviction remains unwavering. Berkshire owns around 152 million shares, representing nearly 17% of the equity portfolio. The stock has stumbled in 2025, down 10% year-to-date and trading below its 200-day moving average, but Buffett has long focused on its brand loyalty and high-spending customer base. Those core strengths align with his preference for durable, competitive advantages, making it a quintessential investment choice for Buffett. 3. Bank of America: A Steady Financial Sector Anchor Bank of America (NYSE:) remains one of Berkshire’s most significant holdings, even after minor adjustments in 2024. The company owns close to 680 million shares, amounting to about 11% of the portfolio. Buffett has often expressed admiration for CEO Brian Moynihan’s leadership and the bank’s strong capital position. While interest rates may have peaked, BAC’s solid fundamentals and dividend yield make it a steady, income-generating holding well-suited to Buffett’s long-term approach. 4. Coca-Cola: A 35-Year Compounder Few holdings represent Buffett’s investment philosophy better than Coca-Cola (NYSE:). Purchased in the late 1980s, it has remained in the portfolio for over 35 years. As of the most recent filing, Berkshire held nearly 400 million shares, comprising about 9% of the portfolio. While KO is no longer an aggressive growth stock, it continues to deliver reliable dividends and steady returns. YTD, the beverage giant has surged 16.5% amidst market turbulence, reflecting its defensive appeal. Its global brand strength, pricing power, and defensive characteristics make it a timeless Buffett holding, especially relevant in today’s more cautious market environment. 5. Chevron: A Modern Energy Bet Chevron (NYSE:) is a relatively newer addition to the portfolio, but it has quickly risen to become Berkshire’s fifth-largest holding. The position, initiated and expanded between 2022 and 2023, now represents roughly 6% of the portfolio, with 114 million shares owned. While energy prices have cooled in 2025, Chevron’s integrated operations, strong balance sheet, and shareholder returns via dividends make it an appealing long-term bet. Buffett appears content to ride out short-term volatility in favor of steady cash flow. 17. Marvel Rivals Fans Demand No Point Deduction if DPS Heroes ****** It Up Marvel Rivals Fans Demand No Point Deduction if DPS Heroes ****** It Up The atmosphere in the Marvel Rivals community has been… tense, to say the least. And honestly, can you blame them? Support mains are not getting the respect they deserve (and are on a strike), and when that’s not the issue, team compositions in ranked are falling apart in spectacular fashion. Today, we bring you another prime example of how a match can go completely off the rails, even when victory is within reach, and why fans are begging NetEase for ranked penalties to show a little more mercy when it’s clearly (or entirely) not their fault. Marvel Rivals fans have had enough and are demanding a change As you already know, Marvel Rivals allows players to select any hero they want, with no role restrictions. On the surface, this sounds like freedom, and it actually has been since its release. But in ranked? It’s more like roulette. Every match feels like a gamble: will someone pick a tank? Will someone pick a support? If we have support, will the two supports work together? Or will the lobby devolve into DPS insta-locks? This doesn’t help with the fact that the current balancing leans in favor of duelists. With some players having role flexibility of a toothpick, it’s not hard to see why players are frustrated, especially in ranked. At lower ranks, sure, you can sometimes get away with bad comps. But not always, and certainly not when things start falling apart at the worst possible moment. Case in point: a recent match that sparked a plea from the community. Posts from the marvelrivals community on Reddit In a thread that perfectly sums up why the players are frustrated, one fan shared how their ranked game completely unraveled, despite their team being in a winning position (with bad composition). Three teammates rage-quit, one followed, and the player who stayed was still hit with a point loss. Comment byu/ThatCatRizze from discussion inmarvelrivals Comment byu/ThatCatRizze from discussion inmarvelrivals This highlights the core issue of the current ranked system: it doesn’t care who stayed, who tried, or who sabotaged the match. Sure, there’s a short ****** ban for leavers, but that doesn’t undo the MMR hit taken by the teammates who stuck it out. A delicate balance for NetEase to find Matchmaking is full of chaos, quitters, and crushed dreams. | Image Credit: NetEase Games Yes, it’s frustrating, but the resolution to this issue is not as simple as hero balance changes. The issue lies in the fine line between too much leniency and too little protection. On one hand, if NetEase is too lenient, it risks creating an environment ripe for exploitation, things like ****** dodging, soft throwing, or even outright gaming the system just to avoid point loss. The last thing anyone wants is a system that encourages players to quit early or intentionally throw games. On the other hand, if the protection is too strict, players who were accidentally kicked from the game, due to an internet issue or a game ******, get punished unfairly. They’re left paying the price for something completely out of their control, which only deepens the frustration. You see the tricky part here. But even so, there’s no excuse for letting three rage-quits tank someone’s hard-earned rank. NetEase needs to implement smart protections that shield committed players from the chaos caused by teammates who give up. The community has made their frustrations clear. Now it’s up to the developers to meet them halfway, before the system loses the trust of the players who care the most. 18. Apple Renews Fears About Tariffs, China With Wobbly Report Apple Renews Fears About Tariffs, China With Wobbly Report Apple’s much-awaited quarterly earnings report failed to soothe investor concerns about its biggest challenges, including escalating tariff costs and a slowdown in China. The company’s shares declined about 2.8 percent in premarket trading Friday. Apple had released second-quarter results that included worse-than-expected sales in China. The iPhone maker also warned in the Thursday statement that tariffs will increase costs this quarter, a sign that geopolitical tensions are taking a growing toll on the world’s most valuable business. Apple expects $900 million (roughly Rs. 7,603 crore) in higher costs from tariffs in the current *******, Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said during a conference call. Revenue will increase by a percentage in the low- to mid-single digits in the quarter, compared with a five percent average analyst estimate. The company didn’t offer any guidance on the impact of tariffs beyond the current *******. “We will manage the company the way we always have, with thoughtful and deliberate decisions, with a focus on investing for the long term,” Cook said during the call. Sales from China, meanwhile, fell 2.3 percent to $16 billion (roughly Rs. 1,35,165 crore) in the second quarter, which ended March 29. Analysts had predicted $16.83 billion (roughly Rs. 1,42,164 crore). That shortfall is an ominous sign for what was once a growth market. Apple has lost ground to local phone brands, such as Huawei, Xiaomi and Oppo, and the government there banned foreign-made technology from some workplaces. Apple’s China-centric production also makes it especially vulnerable to tariffs announced by the Trump administration. The company is struggling in AI as well, especially in China, where its Apple Intelligence platform isn’t yet available. And the brand is increasingly seen as behind the times by consumers in China, where competitors have rolled out foldable devices. Apple is preparing to launch its AI services in China in the coming months — relying on partners Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and Baidu Inc. — and a foldable iPhone is due next year. As part of the quarterly report, the company announced plans to increase its share buyback program by $100 billion (roughly Rs. 8,44,670 crore) and boost the quarterly dividend four percent to 26 cents a share. Apple shares had been down 15 percent this year through Thursday’s close. Overall sales gained five percent to $95.4 billion (roughly Rs. 8,05,821 crore) last quarter, above the $94.6 billion (roughly Rs. 140) average estimate. Apple had projected percentage growth in the low- to mid-single digits. Earnings came in at $1.65 a share in the second quarter, compared with an average estimate of $1.62 (roughly Rs. 135). Apple sold $46.8 billion (roughly Rs. 3,95,379 crore) worth of iPhones in the *******, exceeding estimates of $45.9 billion (roughly Rs. 3,87,804 crore). Still, that’s up less than two percent from $46 billion (roughly Rs. 3,88,355 crore) in the year-earlier quarter and compares with $51.3 billion (roughly Rs. 4,33,391 crore) in the same ******* two years ago. The latest flagship iPhones aren’t markedly different than the prior models and mostly offer the same AI features as the iPhone 15 Pro from 2023. That’s given consumers less reason to upgrade. The company debuted the iPhone 16e during the quarter, replacing its low-end $429 (roughly Rs. 36,240) SE model. That phone’s $599 (roughly Rs. 50,604) price is higher than competitors’ offerings — something that may have deterred some shoppers. Later this year, the company is planning more significant iPhone upgrades, including a skinnier design. Cook praised the company’s homegrown C1 modem chip, which is part of the 16e, saying the new component is the beginning of a “journey.” The company has been contending with a range of challenges — beyond the looming tariffs. Apple shuffled AI management in recent weeks, and it’s under mounting regulatory pressure in the EU and its home country. On Wednesday, a federal judge demanded that the company open up its App Store to third-party payment options and stop charging commissions on outside purchases. Services, which includes the App Store and Apple TV+, grew 12 percent to $26.7 billion (roughly Rs. 2,25,568 crore) last quarter — in line with estimates. That business is under threat in a few areas, though. This week’s App Store ruling is poised to hurt the platform’s revenue. And the US government is trying to break up Apple’s lucrative search deal with Alphabet Inc.’s Google. The company didn’t provide guidance on future services growth due to “uncertainty.” The Mac division, which launched new MacBook Air and Mac Studio models during the quarter, generated $7.95 billion (roughly Rs. 67,151 crore) in revenue. That beat estimates of nearly $7.8 billion. The iPad accounted for sales of $6.4 billion (roughly Rs. 54,051 crore), topping projections of about $6.1 billion (roughly Rs. 51,518 crore). In March, the company rolled out a refreshed low-end iPad as well as iPad Air models with faster M3 processors. It’s planning to introduce a new iPad Pro with an M5 chip as early as the end of this year, Bloomberg News has reported. The company’s Wearables, Home and Accessories category, which has struggled in recent quarters, generated $7.52 billion (roughly Rs. 63,510 crore) in sales. That missed an average estimate of $8.05 billion (roughly Rs. 67,980 crore). Tariffs remain one of the biggest question marks. Though Apple is likely to sidestep the 145 percent China levy that the administration originally proposed, new tariffs on electronics are still coming. The turmoil threatens to upend the company’s supply chain and potentially force it to raise prices. Cook said during the call that he had nothing to announce about possible price increases. Already, Apple is looking to make more of its US-bound iPhones in India rather than China. That country is now fulfilling half of US demand, Cook said. He said that the majority of production for Apple Watches, AirPods, iPads and Macs sold in the US will be made in Vietnam, which has a lower tariff level than China. Highlighting the tariff concern, Apple cited “trade and other international disputes” in the list of risks and uncertainties in its quarterly report. That’s something it typically mentions in its annual filings. But the Cupertino, California-based company got one boost from the tariff threats in the current quarter: Customers flooded Apple retail stores to buy new iPhones and other products out of fear that price hikes were coming. Those sales would show up in the June quarter. Cook said the tariffs didn’t create extra demand in the March quarter, and he’s unsure of the precise impact in the current *******. The Apple CEO sidestepped questions about bringing additional manufacturing to the US. But he touted that the company will use tens of millions of US-made device processors this year. Cook also defended the company’s AI strategy. He was asked about delays to a new version of the Siri voice assistant and said the company needed more time to work on the features so they meet Apple’s “high-quality bar.” “We are making progress,” he said. “And we look forward to getting these features into customers’ hands.” © 2025 Bloomberg LP (This story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is auto-generated from a syndicated feed.) Daniel Acker | Bloomberg | Getty Images Berkshire Hathaway‘s annual meeting is far different — and larger — than it was six decades ago, when Warren Buffett took over what was then a failing Massachusetts textile company. Today’s “Woodstock for Capitalists” began with just a dozen attendees in 1965. Sixty years later, the Omaha, Nebraska gathering attracts as many as 40,000 people from around the world. Nowadays, attendees begin lining up outside the CHI Health Center in the early morning hours on Saturday to hear from Warren Buffett, the 94-year-old chief executive officer. Known as the Oracle of Omaha for dispensing investment wisdom, Buffett is also famous for sharing insights into business and strategy, not to mention advice on softer topics such as friendship and life, to a rapt audience. This year’s shareholder meeting is Buffett’s second without Charlie Munger, his close friend and business partner who died in 2023. Greg Abel, Berkshire Hathaway Energy chairman and Buffett’s successor, will join him for questions on stage. Insurance Chief Ajit Jain will also join the pair for part of Saturday’s question-and-answer event. The event has ballooned into a weekend-long array of activities, including a shopping event known as the “Berkshire Bazaar of Bargains,” featuring products made by the conglomerate’s subsidiaries. A 5-kilometer run and value investing conferences have become hallmarks of attendees’ weekend itineraries. “You’ve just got event after event after event,” said Christopher Bloomstran, president of Semper Augustus Investments Group. Bloomstran, who’s attended the annual meeting for more than two decades, called it a “rite of passage” for new investors. This year, the company is selling 5,000 volumes of a limited edition book, “60 Years of Berkshire Hathaway,” marking Buffett’s tenure as CEO. Proceeds from an auction of copies signed by Buffett and author Carrie Sova will benefit the Stephen Center, a charity for homeless youth and adults in South Omaha. The meeting itself will look different than what many attendees remember from years past, according to the 2024 shareholder letter. Buffett will make opening remarks at 8 a.m. local time Saturday, but there will be no movie introduction, a popular feature in prior years. The question-and-answer ******* will only have a half-hour break and end at 1p.m., though the shopping area will remain open until 4 p.m. News outlets have covered the event for decades. The event will be broadcast exclusively by CNBC this year and webcast in English and Mandarin. Regular attendees often say there’s a magic and camaraderie to the in-person experience that keeps them coming back to Omaha, where Berkshire is headquartered, despite being able to livestream the event at home. “It really is special,” said Adam Mead, CEO of Mead Capital Management and author of “The Complete Financial History of Berkshire Hathaway.” “‘I’m not a religious person, but it has that feel of going to church.” The following are a collection of moments from meetings throughout the years compiled by CNBC in honor of Warren Buffett’s 60 years leading Berkshire Hathaway. 20. We Could Soon Be Seeing Empty Shelves Everywhere. Here’s Which Items Might Disappear First. We Could Soon Be Seeing Empty Shelves Everywhere. Here’s Which Items Might Disappear First. Above, empty shelves are seen as a woman shops for items at a Dollar Tree store on April 28, 2025, in Alhambra, California. Could this become the new norm? Frederic J. Brown / Getty Images Because of President Donald Trump’s trade war against the world, American consumers may soon start start seeing shortages on their everyday household goods and accessories. In the past few weeks, Trump has imposed massive import taxes on many U.S. trading partners ― including an astonishing 145% tariff on ******** goods ― only to abruptly change or suspend some of these tariffs. But Trump’s chaos is already starting to freeze supply chains. U.S. businesses are cancelling or postponing shipment orders from China. Just last week, the executives for major retailers Walmart, Home Depot and Target reportedly told Trump in a meeting that shoppers are likely to see empty shelves and higher prices in the next few weeks if he doesn’t roll back his tariff plans. Don’t expect a toilet paper shortage like what we experienced during COVID lockdown. Because many essential goods like food, beverages and paper goods are more likely to be made domestically, they are more immune from these shortages, said Casey Armstrong, chief marketing officer of ShipBob, a global fulfillment and supply chain platform. “You’re not going to run out of food or toilet paper, but don’t be surprised if your $3 spray bottle or favorite pair of $5 socks vanishes from shelves or doubles in price,” Armstrong said. HuffPost talked to supply chain experts about which categories of common goods are most vulnerable to disappearing from shelves soon. Fast Fashion And Clothes Direct-to-consumer brands like Shein and Temu used to rely upon a “de minimis” shipment exemption to sell cheap goods to U.S. consumers. Under the “de minimis” tariff exemption, a U.S. shopper could buy $800 worth of goods per day directly from a foreign seller free of tariffs and administrative fees, but soon no more. Trump signed an executive order to close that loophole, which will go into effect on May 2. Ending this exemption is expected to disproportionately hurt lower-income and ********* consumers, according to a National Bureau of Economic Research paper published last year. As a result of the “de minimis” loophole ending, consumers may see both fewer quantities and fewer options from their favorite fast-fashion brand, said Nathan Strang, director of ocean freight at Flexport, a company that brokers customs clearance and logistics for importers and exporters. “You’re going to start to see less quantities,” he said. Fourth Of July Items Fourth of July is one of the nearest major holidays, and it’s when you might first notice a major shortage, be it your desired grill or fireworks. That’s because seasonal items like American flags and fireworks are largely made in China, said Chris *****, a University of California, Los Angeles professor who studies global supply chain management. For some of these products, “they have no alternative” supply maker, he said. Back-To-School Supplies A lot of back-to-school shopping happens over the summer, and if Trump’s tariff plans don’t change, expect to see fewer options. Strang explained that it can take 30-plus days for goods to get manufactured and shipped from China to the U.S., and the timeline for producing back-to-school supplies like pencils, notebooks and computer bags can all vary. As a result, there won’t be a uniform disappearance of these items in retail aisles. Instead, what Strang expects to see is fewer options in the back-to-school supplies that many parents want to buy this summer. He noted that many manufacturers don’t make all of the different styles at the same time. Typically, “they do one style, they retool, they reset, and they do the next style, and they continue to do that throughout the year,” Strang said. He gave the example a child wanting a blue backpack, “and there are no blue backpacks. Like, that’s the kind of thing I think a lot of people will notice,” he said. Furniture And Home Decorations The patio furniture you want to buy this summer may also be in short supply, Strang said, because a lot of the parts are manufactured in China. Armstrong also said a lot of less-expensive home decorations are produced in China and shipped in bulk. These items are “pretty margin sensitive, and so I think that’s going to be pretty impacted as well,” he said. Toys Factories in China make nearly 80% of all toys sold in America, according to industry group The Toy Association. Even Trump has acknowledged there will be shortages of toys as a result of his tariffs. On Wednesday, he told reporters, “Maybe the children will have two dolls instead of 30, and maybe the two dolls will cost a couple of bucks more than they would normally.” Seasonal Christmas toys in particular could be at risk of disappearing in the fall and winter. Almost half of the small and mid-sized U.S. toy companies said in a recent survey that they are likely to go out of business within weeks if 145% tariffs on ******** goods remain in place. Cheap Household Essentials If you go to your local corner store for plastic cups or other disposable essentials, expect to see shortages there, too. Armstrong said that retailers for “Dollar Store essentials” like soaps, batteries, toothpaste and disposable plates “will be impacted first” because these type of goods experience extreme cost pressures and tight profit margins. Electronics “Consumer electronics could probably see the biggest hit,” Strang said, because many of the parts are made in China. ***** said high-end electronics, like an Apple phone, that are still on shelves could also become “very expensive.” Replacement Parts Of Appliances If your dishwasher breaks and you need to fix it this summer, expect to have a harder time finding a proper replacement part. Armstrong said appliance replacement accessories like light bulbs, filters, cords and grill parts can be an overlooked category of goods because they are less flashy, but they are vital to the economy and are often sourced from overseas. “Supply chains don’t often prioritize reordering those until they’re running low. And a lot of these are sourced from China,” Armstrong said. Overall, you may not yet notice big changes to your shopping habits, but they will become inevitable under Trump’s tariffs. Major retailers have some inventory they got before Trump’s policy was announced, but that’s running out. ***** predicts that consumers will experience price increases to many of their goods “in three to four weeks’ time.” In other words, you might not see empty shelves right away. Armstrong said it will not happen all at once, but supply shortages in certain aisles will be a “slow bleed” over time. “If nothing changes, I think the summer months is when we’ll really start to see it,” Armstrong said. “First, things like toys will vanish. And then maybe, your favorite apparel items. And then, maybe some of the weird replacement parts that you didn’t know came from China.” Related… Source link #Empty #Shelves #Heres #Items #Disappear Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  22. Nvidia’s CEO says China is not far behind the U.S. in AI capabilities Nvidia’s CEO says China is not far behind the U.S. in AI capabilities China is not significantly behind the U.S. when developing AI hardware and software, said Jensen Huang, chief executive of Nvidia, at the Hill and Valley Forum. While ******** companies have made remarkable progress with AI services and software, Huang’s comments mainly refer to ******** AI hardware. Coincidentally, Huawei has started to ship its latest AI system, which is largely deemed competitive with Nvidia’s GB200 NVL72, reports Financial Times. However, there is a catch. “China is not behind anybody, China is right behind us, we are very, very close,” said Huang at the sidelines of the Hill and Valley Forum, where business leaders and lawmakers met to discuss technology and national security, according to Bloomberg Podcasts. Regarding hardware, China has numerous companies developing AI chips that are more or less competitive against Nvidia’s AI hardware. Huawei is ahead of everyone else as its AI strategy spans from its Ascend 900-series AI accelerators to servers to rack-scale solutions for cloud data centers. Recently, the company announced CloudMatrix 384, which packs 384 dual-chiplet HiSilicon Ascend 910C interconnected using a fully optical mesh network. So far, Huawei has sold over 10 CloudMatrix 384 systems to ******** customers, which signals that some would like to try domestic alternatives to restricted Nvidia hardware. “There is no question that Huawei is one of the most formidable technology companies in the world, and they are incredible in computing, they are incredible in networking technology, and in software capabilities, all of the essential capabilities to advance AI. And they have they’ve made enormous progress in the last several years.” This Huawei CloudMatrix 384 system spans 16 racks: 12 compute racks each housing 32 Ascend 910C accelerators, plus four dedicated racks managing optical connectivity via 6,912 optical transceivers at 800G LPO speeds. CloudMatrix 384 achieves roughly 300 PFLOPs dense BF16 compute, nearly double Nvidia’s GB200 NVL72, with 2.1 times higher memory bandwidth and over 3.6 times greater HBM capacity using HBM2E. CM384’s optical interconnects provide substantial bandwidth advantages, including 2.1 times better scale-up and 5.3 times better scale-out capabilities. However, it falls short of Nvidia’s GB200 NVL72 efficiency, consuming 2.3 times more power per FLOP, 1.8 times more per TB/s memory bandwidth, and 1.1 times more per TB of HBM memory. Shipping 10 CM384 systems is hardly a big deal per se, especially considering that ******** technology firms like Alibaba, ByteDance, and Tencent reportedly invested $16 billion in Nvidia’s H20 HGX GPUs in the first quarter, anticipating U.S. export restrictions called the AI Diffusion Rule set to begin in mid-May. Nonetheless, 10 systems may be the start. Huawei reportedly has about a million HiSilicon Ascend 910C, enough for 2,600 CloudMatrix 384 systems. Then again, 2,600 CM384 clusters can deliver about 780 ExaFLOPS of dense BF16 compute. One needs around 4,300 of Nvidia’s GB200 NVL72 machines (or around 312,000 B200 AI GPUs) to get similar performance. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo estimated that shipments of GB200 NVL72 racks alone in 2025 could reach roughly 25,000 – 35,000 racks, but in addition, the company will also ship GB300 NVL72 racks as well as B100, B200, and B300 AI GPUs. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. This means that Nvidia alone will supply orders of magnitude more AI compute performance than Huawei this year. However, Huawei has technologies that may rival those of the American company. 23. Joshlin Smith’s mother convicted of kidnapping daughter in South Africa Joshlin Smith’s mother convicted of kidnapping daughter in South Africa Wedaeli Chibelushi BBC News Executive Mayor Andrè Truter/ Facebook Joshlin Smith has not been found more than a year after she went missing The mother of a South African girl, who disappeared aged six more than a year ago, has been convicted of kidnapping and trafficking her daughter. Kelly Smith, her boyfriend Jacquen Appollis and their friend Steveno van Rhyn were arrested after Smith’s daughter, Joshlin, went missing from outside her home in Saldanha Bay, near Cape Town, in February last year. Appollis and Rhyn were also found guilty on Friday of kidnapping and trafficking Joshlin. All three had previously pleaded not guilty to to these charges. Joshlin’s disappearance sent shockwaves across South Africa and despite a highly publicised search for her, she is yet to be found. During the trial, held in March, prosecutors accused Smith of having “sold, delivered or exchanged” Joshlin and then lied about her disappearance. Smith wiped tears from her eyes when the guilty verdict was read, while van Rhyn inexplicably broke into a smile. Applause rippled through the packed court room and some onlookers began to cry. The trial was held in Saldanha’s Multipurpose Centre to cater for the huge public interest. Ahead of the verdict, nearby roads had been closed, while police officers were deployed in and around the centre. Smith’s trial captivated South Africa, with witnesses and prosecutors making a number of shocking allegations. The most explosive came from Lourentia Lombaard, a friend and neighbour of Smith who turned state witness. Ms Lombaard alleged that Smith told her she had done “something silly” and sold Joshlin to a traditional healer, known in South Africa as a “sangoma”. The “person who [allegedly took] Joshlin wanted her for her eyes and skin”, Ms Lombaard told the court. A local pastor testified that in 2023, he had heard Smith – a mother of three – talk of selling her children for 20,000 rand ($1,100; £850) each, though she had said she was willing to accept a lower figure of $275. Joshlin’s teacher then alleged in court that Ms Smith had told her during the search that her daughter was already “on a ship, inside a container, and they were on the way to West Africa”. AFP Several shocking allegations were made against Kelly Smith, Joshlin’s mother, during the trial Smith’s lawyer, Rinesh Sivnarain, cast doubt on these allegations. He cited inconsistencies – recognised by the prosecution – in Ms Lombaard’s remarks and suggested she was an “opportunist”. Sangomas are legally recognised in South Africa under the Traditional Health Practitioners Act of 2007, alongside herbalists, traditional birth attendants and traditional surgeons. Some charlatans are involved in unscrupulous traditional so-called cures, and have been known to sell good luck charms that involve body parts. 25. Sam Cook in line for England debut after being named in squad for Zimbabwe Test Sam Cook in line for England debut after being named in squad for Zimbabwe Test In a squad containing no surprises, captain Ben Stokes is fit to lead after undergoing hamstring surgery at Christmas. The match at Trent Bridge will be the all-rounder’s first action since suffering the injury to his left leg in the final Test against New Zealand in December. There are likely to be limitations on how much the 33-year-old will bowl. Uncapped Essex batter Jordan Cox, who missed out on a Test debut in New Zealand because of a broken thumb, also returns to the squad as cover for the top order. Batter Jacob Bethell impressed in his first series in New Zealand but is at the IPL, so opener Zak Crawley and number-three Ollie Pope get the chance to cement their places. Shoaib Bashir is retained as the sole spinner. England have made no secret of their desire for bowlers of high pace so Cook, an ‘English style’ seamer whose strengths lie in accuracy and movement, has had to wait for his chance. The former Loughborough University student has taken 318 first-class wickets at an average below 20 and has played three times for England Lions, including on the tour of Australia earlier this year. Realistically, Cook is competing for one spot in the first-choice XI with Woakes. The Warwickshire man is yet to play this season because of an ankle injury. Another option would have been Dan Worrall, who played three one-day internationals and has now qualified to play for England, but the Surrey man has been overlooked. Zimbabwe’s last Test in the *** was in 2003, a series famous for the Test debut of Anderson, England’s all-time leading wicket-taker. England will be overwhelming favourites to win at Trent Bridge, though the Zimbabweans have just claimed a creditable 1-1 draw in Bangladesh. The five-Test series against India begins on 20 June at Headingley. Highlights of all England’s home international cricket and live coverage of The Hundred will be across BBC TV, iPlayer and the BBC Sport website, beginning with England women’s T20 international against West Indies on 21 May.
