Panamanian town reckons with dark history of colonialism in Festival of Devils and Congos
PORTOBELO, Panama (AP) — Red bathed the small Panamanian town of Portobelo on Saturday in a celebration meant to represent a fight between good and evil, and the resistance of slaves and Spanish colonizers.
Every year, hundreds in the town, which sits wedged between the Caribbean Sea and the region’s tropical jungles, take to the streets for the Festival of Devils and Congos. The festival uses dramatic imagery and bright colors characteristic of Caribbean celebrations to capture the historic struggle between slaves during the time of colonization.
Marchers dress with intricate red and ****** masks, which merges imagery of the ****** and Spanish colonizers. Slaves are dressed in color and, protected by angles dressed in white, chase the devils as they dance, eventually converting their oppressors to good.
It’s the culture of memory, the ****** representing the culture of the oppressor, or in this case, the white man during times of slavery toward the *******, known as Congos, said 34-year-old Eduardo Guadalupe. He said he celebrated in a large ****** mask, with what appeared to be red and ****** dotted flames flaring out of the top and the sides.

Katy Perry: From Blue Origin flight to ‘cringe’ dance moves
Katy Perry: From Blue Origin flight to ‘cringe’ dance moves
Getty Images
Earlier this week American singer Katy Perry, best known for her bubblegum pop, said she felt like a “human Piñata” after weeks of online backlash.
The description felt suitably colourful – but the acknowledgement was serious. A decade on from headlining the Superbowl, Perry’s part in a much-derided Blue Origin spaceflight has seen her star ****** down to Earth.
Mockery over the apparent worthiness of her reaction, including kissing the ground after landing and saying she felt “so connected to love”, spread online. Fast food chain Wendy’s even posted to ask: “Can we send her back?”
Trolls have now taken aim at her world tour, which began in Mexico on 23 April, criticising her dance moves and performances.
It seems the star who first broke through singing about a boyfriend’s mood swings now faces an icy reception. Perry’s blamed an “unhinged and unhealed” internet – but is toxic social media the only reason?
‘A pattern of failed reinvention’
The music writer Michael Cragg, author of Reach for the Stars, believes Perry’s problem is that she’s stuck between pop cultures and feels increasingly out of touch.
“Her pop star persona was cemented in the 2010s as cartoon-y, fun and playful, all whipped cream bras and goofy videos where she wore oversized braces on her teeth,” he says.
For a ******* this worked. Her second album Teenage Dream, which doubled down on Perry’s staple cheeky, sexualised girl-next-door image, scored five Billboard number one singles to match a record set by Michael Jackson. Its follow-up, 2013’s Prism, bore transatlantic smash single Roar (her fourth solo *** number one), as well as Dark Horse in the US (her ninth domestically). Perry hasn’t topped charts under her own steam since.
“That was a long time ago in pop terms and it feels like she hasn’t evolved,” adds Cragg.
After landing back on Earth, Perry said she felt “super connected to life” and “so connected to love”
In the past year, her comeback single Woman’s World, touted as a female empowerment anthem, struck critics as lyrically shallow.
Some fans also seemed unimpressed that it was produced by Dr. Luke, who previously faced ******* assault allegations from the singer Kesha. The producer denied the claims and the pair reached an agreement to settle a defamation lawsuit in 2023, but Perry remained tainted by association.
The track failed to land in the top 50 in the US and only just managed in the ***, at 47. “Her sort of spiritual ‘let love lead the way’ messages she posts don’t really hold sway with very online pop fans in the face of that decision,” says Cragg.
“The regressive girl boss feel of Woman’s World, and then the album not being great hasn’t helped,” he adds, pointing to rapper Doja Cat’s success working with Dr. Luke without the same negative response.
It followed a pattern of failed reinvention attempts stretching back to 2017’s Witness, where Perry attempted to launch her socially conscious “purposeful pop” era.
But its Sia-written lead single Chained to the Rhythm, which boldly attacked mindless pop culture, appeared to be undermined by Bon Appetit, a song openly objectifying Perry as a ******* meal.
The ‘pop girlie’ has changedGetty Images
Chappell Roan had a stratospheric 2024, with fans drawn to her online authenticity. This included speaking out against toxic fans who fail to respect boundaries
Perry’s first hit I Kissed A Girl caused controversy for the fetishisation of lesbians even back in 2008 when it was released. But today Roan’s had global success telling her genuine ****** awakening.
“The flip flopping has jarred in an era where… very defined pop star personas are the ones cutting through,” argues Cragg.
Perry’s 2021-2023 playground-styled Las Vegas residency embraced her surreal, fantastical image to commercial and critical success.
But it’s not translating to a new generation of fans. “I think ultimately people see her as a bit cringeworthy now,” Cragg adds. “Being shot into space on a billionaire’s jolly while everyone watches that on social media platforms interspersed with war and the climate crisis… just feels tonally not ideal,” he says.
Perry may have misjudged the public mood, but at the same time, the venom in the blowback points to deeper issues in pop culture beyond her control.
There is no doubt that the social media landscape has become more frenzied in recent years, with stars like Roan speaking against toxic fandoms.
Simon Diego, the creator of Brazil’s Portal Katy Perry fan community, described the scale of the abuse towards the 40-year-old as “unbelievable”.
The group showed their support by clubbing together with other fan pages to pay for a digital billboard message in New York’s Times Square for 24 hours.
“We’re so proud of you and your magical journey and we love you to the moon and back,” it read.
“Know that you are safe, seen and celebrated. We’ll see you around the world, this is just the beginning.”
It was this that Perry replied to directly with her Piñata remark acknowledging the backlash.

“I think Katy and many other celebrities are feeling unsafe in the one space that used to connect them to fans,” Diego tells BBC News.
He believes that’s why Perry has never posted photos of her daughter’s face online.
But even that boundary was ignored in the wake of the spaceflight criticism, as commenters began targeting her four-year-old child simply because “it’s cool now”, he says. “They don’t understand how bad it could affect her.”
Others, like Marie Claire Australia editor Georgie McCourt, think pervasive misogyny plays a part.
“There’s a particular ire reserved for women like Perry: ambitious, unapologetic, hyper-visible,” she wrote in a column, noting that male celebrities have already gone into space without such surveillant reaction.
So where next for Perry? Cragg says a hit single would help.
“I’m not saying it will return her to the commercial highs of old, because that ship has sailed for a lot of pre-streaming artists, but it will steady the ship.”

West Coast debutant Bo Allan to sweat on match review officer after Jack Viney high hit
West Coast young gun Bo Allan is sweating on a possible suspension after his debut match, with a high hit on Melbourne’s Jack Viney set to attract Match Review scrutiny.
WATCH THE INCIDENT IN THE PLAYER ABOVE
Allan was trying to spoil the football as Viney went for a mark at half-forward during the third quarter of their clash at Optus Stadium on Saturday night.
The teenager was running the other way to the former Demons captain and missed the ball with his spoil, catching Viney high which gave away a 50m penalty and resulted in a goal.
Viney was shaken up by the incident but played out the rest of the match.
“I haven’t looked at it again on tape, but I saw it live,” Eagles coach Andrew McQualter said.
“Vines played out the game which is usually an indication that it will be OK.”

Allan could find himself suspended if it is graded careless, medium impact and high contact which carries a one-game suspension.
The defender will finished with seven disposals and two tackles in the 32-point defeat, having spent time on West *********** product Koltyn Tholstrup.
A ban would be a blow for West Coast’s defensive unit, with key defender Jeremy McGovern set to miss next weekend’s clash with Richmond because of concussion after an incident in the second quarter of the clash that could land Melbourne’s Jake Melksham in trouble.

California Supreme Court orders state bar to revert to national exams after testing debacle
California Supreme Court orders state bar to revert to national exams after testing debacle
The California Supreme Court on Friday lowered the passing score on the State Bar of California’s botched February exam and ordered the agency to ditch its new multiple-choice questions in July and revert to the traditional test format.
“The Court remains concerned over the processes used to draft those questions, including the previously undisclosed use of artificial intelligence,” the state’s highest court said in a Friday order.
“In light of the particular issues encountered February,” the court lowered the total raw passing score for general bar exam takers to 534 points or higher on the essay, performance test and multiple-choice questions.
The order came just hours after the State Bar of California announced that its embattled leader, who has faced growing pressure to resign after the exam debacle, will step down in July.
Leah T. Wilson, the agency’s executive director, informed the Board of Trustees she will not seek another term in the position she has held on and off since 2017. She also apologized for her role in the February bar exam chaos.
“Accountability is a bedrock principle for any leader,” Wilson said in a statement.
“At the end of the day, I am responsible for everything that occurs within the organization. Despite our best intentions, the experiences of applicants for the February Bar Exam simply were unacceptable, and I fully recognize the frustration and stress this experience caused. While there are no words to assuage those emotions, I do sincerely apologize.”
Wilson’s last day will be July 7.
Many February test takers urged Wilson to resign after the exam, which critics say was rolled out hastily in a bid to save money and ultimately plagued by technical glitches and irregularities. Last week, further controversy erupted when it became clear that the state bar had not been transparent about the use of artificial intelligence to develop multiple-choice questions.

The news of Wilson‘s departure came on the day that thousands of February test takers were scheduled to get their exam results.
But the results appear to have been delayed after the state bar was late filing a petition with the California Supreme Court on scoring adjustments for the exam that also responded to the court’s questions about how and why it used AI to develop multiple-choice questions.
The state bar filed a petition to the Supreme Court on Tuesday — and test takers remain in limbo, unsure when they will learn if they passed or failed.
Since the debacle, Sen. Tom Umberg (D-Orange), chair of the state Senate Judiciary Committee, and many legal experts have called on the state bar to ditch the new questions and revert to the traditional test format in July — at least until new questions and methods are adequately tested.

On April 25, deans at more than a dozen California’s American Bar Assn.-accredited law schools wrote to Patricia Guerrero, chief justice of the California Supreme Court, expressing “serious concerns about the exam’s fairness and validity.” The deans urged the court to release all 200 multiple-choice questions that were on the February exam and return to using the NCBE’s Multistate Bar Examination for the multiple-choice portion of the next exam.
Wilson, however, signaled Friday that California should push ahead with its own bar exam.
“As the fourth largest economy in the world, it is only right that California develops its own bar exam, and that ultimately that exam reflect the innovation, excellence, equity, and accessibility principles that are central to who we are as Californians,” she said in a statement. “We will not get there by turning backward.”
Wilson first took on the role of executive director in 2017, but exited briefly to work for a consulting firm before returning in 2021. She faced additional scrutiny for her income — she earned an annual 2023 salary of $362,067, plus $59,968 in bonuses — at a time when the state bar is struggling financially.
“Stagnating revenue and increasing personnel costs,” California’s state auditor said in a recent report, “have led its general fund to a deficit in four of the last five years.”
Still, Wilson said she was proud of her time at the helm of the state bar, citing her efforts to make the organization an “exceptional workplace” that resulted in “strong staff engagement, positive union relationships and historically low turnover.”
“Over the course of nearly 10 years, I have had the privilege of leading the State Bar through a ******* of transformative change,” Wilson said in a statement.
“I am particularly proud of our efforts to elevate and offer real solutions to the access-to-justice crisis in our state, make real our commitments to increasing equity and inclusion in the profession, and stabilizing the State Bar financially,” Wilson added.
Brandon Stallings, chair of the state bar’s Board of Trustees, praised Wilson’s leadership, noting she had played a key role in advancing many of the organization’s critical initiatives.
“The Board recognizes the significant contributions that Leah Wilson made during her tenure, particularly in the concerted effort to recognize and address racial disparities in the discipline system,” Stallings said. “We understand and respect her decision, and we are grateful for her service.”

Forget The Stock Market’s Tariff Turmoil. Trump’s Next 100 Days Could Bring A Bullish Trifecta That Reignites Demand, Expert Says

A historic divergence is unfolding across asset classes, with gold surging to its best presidential-term start since Gerald Ford while U.S. stocks post their worst performance since the same era, and Bank of America’s chief strategist Michael Hartnett says investors are increasingly betting on policy shifts to rescue the market from soft macroeconomic headwinds.
In a note shared Friday, Hartnett outlined how the “second 100 days” of Donald Trump’s 2025 presidency could bring a pivot toward lower tariffs, lower rates and lower taxes — a bullish trifecta for risk assets.
That shift, he said, could revive appetite for equities, even as recession signals persist in the economic data.
Trending: Maker of the $60,000 foldable home has 3 factory buildings, 600+ houses built, and big plans to solve housing — you can become an investor for $0.80 per share today.
Just a week ago, Hartnett said a sustainable bull market would need three things: lower Treasury yields under 4%, consistent earnings growth above 5%, and a meaningful U.S.-China tariff rollback. His strategy remained: “Stay BIG, sell rips” — favoring bonds, international stocks and gold while fading rallies in U.S. equities.
Gold is the standout performer year to date, up 22%, marking its best opening 100 days since the Ford administration.
In contrast, the S&P 500 is down 0.3%, its worst kickoff since the 1970s, while the U.S. dollar has tumbled 7.6%, logging its steepest slide since the Nixon era.
Notably, gold – as tracked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:GLD) – logged its fifth straight month of outperformance versus stocks in April, notching both the longest streak since 2009 and the strongest since 2011.
Hartnett attributed the initial market moves to headline-grabbing developments like artificial intelligence excitement, crypto speculation, NATO tensions and “Liberation Day” trades.
Yet, these trades are now “unwinding significantly,” he said, as attention shifts to potential Trump-era economic policies in the pipeline.

Treasury yields are reflecting expectations of easier monetary policy. The 2-year Treasury yield has fallen 70 basis points since Trump’s Inauguration Day, oil is down 20%, and the U.S. dollar is weakening.
These moves, combined with strong capital expenditures in AI — tracking at $320 billion for 2025 — are helping to cushion the blow from deteriorating economic indicators.
Soft macro data is still troubling: GDP forecasts for 2026 have dropped to 1.5% from 2%, oil has plunged 56% since the Russia-Ukraine shock and 17% since “Liberation Day,” and consumer sentiment remains weak.
Yet, Hartnett said as long as the U.S. labor market holds up — with no significant cracks in payrolls — recession fears may be premature.
April employment growth soared by 177,000, according to official statistics released Friday, topping estimates of 130,000.

Federal election 2025: Liberal Tom White concedes victory to sitting teal independent Kate Chaney in Curtin
The Liberal candidate for Curtin, Tom White, has conceded victory to sitting teal independent Kate Chaney.
Mr White refused to concede on election night, claiming the seat was too close to call, but on Sunday morning took to Instagram to step aside for Ms Chaney.
“I have just called Kate Chaney to concede the election in Curtin and to congratulate her on a well-deserved victory,” he wrote
“Kate and I have many differences but this is not the time to dwell on them.
“She has been an impressive and formidable opponent. I admire her team and the sincerity they have brought to the campaign, even when we’ve disagreed strongly.
“Defeat stings but it’s much less painful than the permanent, dull ache of wondering what might have been had I never tried.
Feel like giving the politicians a rating this Federal election?
Our Pollie Rater lets you do just that.

“I have no regrets.”
With 76 per cent of the vote counted, Ms Chaney had secured 53.3 per cent of the two-part-preferred count.
The Climate 200-backed independent went into the election with a 1.3 per cent margin after winning the seat in 2022 as part of the so-called “teal wave”.
It ended the Coalition’s 23-year stranglehold on a seat that was once among its safest.
The result comes as another blow for the Liberals, who lost the election and their Opposition leader, with Peter Dutton unable to secure his own seat of Dickson in Queensland.
In regional WA, the party fared well with incumbent Melissa Price retaining Durack and Rick Wilson holding onto the O’Connor electorate for a fifth term.

Korean golfer continues to blossom in the Utah desert
Korean golfer continues to blossom in the Utah desert
Korean golfer Haeran Ryu will take a two-shot lead into the final round of the ****** Desert Championship in the LPGA Tour’s return to Utah for the first time in more than 60 years.
Ryu holed out for eagle on the 11th hole on Saturday, sending her to a four-under 68 for the round and 18 under for the tournament to maintain her two-shot lead.
She will be trying to win a tournament for the seventh straight year, dating back to when she was an 18-year-old on the Korea LPGA.
Her biggest challenge might be China’s Ruoning Yin, the former Women’s PGA champion who ran off 10 birdies at ****** Desert for a 62, the best score of the tournament and enough to get within two shots.
Steph Kyriacou was the leading *********** after three rounds, sitting in a tie for 10th place at 11 under, seven shots behind Ryu.
After opening the tournament with a one-under 71, Kyriacou has improved with each round, following up her second-round 68 with a six-under 66 that featured seven birdies and only one bogey.
Compatriot Grace Kim was two shots further back at nine under after carding an even-par 72 in the third round that featured two birdies, counteracted by two bogeys.
Ryu started with a two-shot lead and twice had players catch her, if only briefly.
One of them was Somi Lee, who had a pair of early birdies before her round self-destructed with a double-bogey on No.6 and no birdies until the final hole after she had shot herself out of the tournament.
Germany’s Esther Henseleit briefly caught Ryu, but only until the 24-year-old Korean stood in the 11th fairway, 82 yards away. Her wedge caught the slope with just enough spin to send it into the cup for an eagle.
Henseleit made a 10-foot birdie putt on the 17th to get within one shot, but she hit her drive into the ****** lava rocks and had to hit another off the tee.
Her par chip from just short of the green left her three feet away, but she missed what looked to be a routine putt and made double-bogey. That gave the ******* a 68 and left her three shots behind.
Ryu had a chance to extend her lead until she missed a birdie putt from about the same distance Henseleit had.
The Korean, who shared the 54-hole lead at a major last week in the Chevron Championship before closing with a 76, was at 18-under 198.
Yin, who lost a chance to win another major last week when she three-putted in the five-way playoff at the Chevron, started the day eight shots behind and posted her 62 about the time the final group was making the turn.
“I’m just going to keep saying this: Stay in the present and the past is the past,” she said.
“I mean, you cannot guarantee every day is going to be a good day like today, but you just got to keep trying and keep trying to have a great day.”
Starting times have been moved forward for the final round because of forecast rain.

Kelsey Grammer details sister’s unthinkable final moments after being brutally stabbed 42 times: ‘He almost decapitated her’
Kelsey Grammer delivered a “graphic, impersonal review” of his sister Karen Grammer’s 1975 ******* in his new book.
While the “Frasier” star admittedly was hesitant to include the brutal stabbing in his new memoir, “Karen: A Brother Remembers,” he decided it was “beneficial” to share.
“It is ammunition to keep Freddie Glenn in jail,” he wrote (via People) of the man who is serving a life sentence in prison for raping and killing Karen in Colorado Springs, Colo.

“Karen: A Brother Remembers” comes out Tuesday.
Karen was approached by three men outside of the Red Lobster she worked at around 11 p.m. on June 30, 1975, while waiting for a co-worker.
Glenn and the two individuals, who had initially planned to rob the restaurant, demanded Karen go with them.
“For what?” she asked, ultimately being taken into the strangers’ car, where she was tied up, brought to an apartment and repeatedly ******.

Glenn stabbed her 42 times, with Kelsey, 70, writing in his memoir that “he almost decapitated her” and “punched holes in” her “body with unimaginable brutality.”
He noted, “The coroner noted that through a gaping wound in her neck, he could see all the way into Karen’s lung. … There were defensive wounds on her hands.”

Karen crawled “400 feet from the place where she had been stabbed” to knock on a trailer door for help.
“Bloody fingerprints mark the trail of her final moments at exactly 3’6” along the office and walls of the trailer park,” Kelsey told readers. “She had been on her knees, crawling her way. Seeking help with her last ounce of life.
“She had fallen backward from the trailer door after knocking for help,” the “Cheers” alum continued. “It was her last hope and disappointment.”

He clarified that the man who opened the door and called the police was not the Good Samaritan he hoped for.
“That man did not attempt to help her but simply called the police after leaving her body as it lay,” he explained. “Eyes vacant, staring at the sky, her legs still on the steps, her head on the ground and a clenched fist above her head with a single finger pointing — somewhere or nowhere — just pointing.”
Kelsey reported his sister missing and was the family member to identify her body one week later.

Overseas rates decision to dominate domestic chatter
Overseas rates decision to dominate domestic chatter
When the United States speaks, *********** investors listen.
And they will be doing so very closely as the much-anticipated US rates decision is handed down on Thursday.
Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell has previously indicated there will be no changes to the cash rate in May, while the bank waits for more information on the effects of recent tariffs.
But what investors are mainly interested in is what comes afterwards, independent economist Craig James says.
“(The decision) shouldn’t have any great impact, providing the Federal Reserve chair indicates that there is still the continued leaning towards interest rate cuts,” he told AAP.
“If it is the case that he winds back the guidance on rate cuts, that could see a degree of disappointment in US markets, and that would have implications for *********** investors as well.”
Commonwealth Bank economists are forecasting the US bank to cut rates by a quarter of a percentage point in each of the next four decision cycles.
But Mr James said the Federal Reserve could take a more cautious attitude, given the impact of the tariffs increasing prices amid a slowing economy which contracted 0.3 per cent in the March quarter.
“That’s something that investors certainly don’t like because the question is how does policy react to a stagflation situation?” the economist said.
“Do you increase interest rates to fight inflation, or do you decrease interest rates because the economy is flat or contracting?”
The Bank of England will also hand down its decision on Friday but *********** investors and markets will pay less attention than the “main game” in the US.
Back home, the Reserve Bank will announce its rates decision on May 20, with the door “wide open” for another rate cut, given inflation is under control – rising by 0.7 per cent in the March quarter.
“But in this volatile environment, they’re going to be fairly careful in terms of what they indicate about future movements,” Mr James said.
Monthly household spending data will also be released on Tuesday and the economist said investors would keenly watch as the key measure would soon replace retail trade data as the Reserve Bank’s indicator on consumer spending.
“Unless it’s significantly away from zero, if it shows a modest rise or modest loss, that will be taken well by investors,” he said.
The federal election result could also be a point of market interest, with anything but a majority government on either side a “worst case”, Mr James said.
“Markets love certainty. Investors love certainty,” he said.
“Hung parliaments would be the worst of all worlds because there could be many independents to lobby in terms of getting votes through.”
Meanwhile, investors on Wall Street have taken comfort from strong economic data and the potential easing of trade tensions between the US and China, with stocks notching a second straight week of gains.
The US economy added 177,000 jobs in April, exceeding expectations, while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.2 per cent.
As a result, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 564.47 points, or 1.39 per cent, on Friday to 41,317.43, the S&P 500 gained 82.54 points, or 1.47 per cent, to 5,686.68 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 266.99 points, or 1.51 per cent, to 17,977.73.
*********** share futures jumped 32 points, or 0.38 per cent, to 11,481.
The S&P/ASX200 rose 92.4 points, or 1.13 per cent, to 8,238, as the broader All Ordinaries gained 90.5 points, or 1.08 per cent, to 8,456.2.

Rigetti Stock Soars 18% on Bullish Options Activity, Upcoming Earnings
Rigetti Stock Soars 18% on Bullish Options Activity, Upcoming Earnings
Rigetti Computing (NASDAQ:RGTI) shares rose more than 18% on Friday Morning amid a spike in call option volume, reflecting heightened investor anticipation ahead of the company’s earnings release on May 12.
Trading data showed call options changing hands at double the normal volume, signaling aggressive positioning by bullish traders. Analysts pointed to the sharp rise in activity as a key driver of Friday’s surge.
The uptick also comes as Rigetti gains attention for a pair of recent developments. The quantum computing firm secured new investment from Quanta Computer and received a research award from the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research. Both moves were seen as affirming the company’s growth trajectory in the quantum sector.
Adding to the market momentum, Rigetti’s Put/Call ratio remained at low levels, a technical indicator often interpreted as a sign of strong bullish sentiment.
Despite the rally, Rigetti’s year-to-date performance remains in negative territory, with shares still down more than 54% since January.

Texas has a new city home to Elon Musk’s SpaceX
Texas has a new city home to Elon Musk’s SpaceX

Texas has a brand new city, and its name is Starbase.
A vote Saturday to decide whether to turn part of south Texas into a new city centered around Elon Musk’s SpaceX delivered a victory to the tech billionaire and his rocket company. As expected, the measure passed with broad support, paving the way for a newly incorporated city made up almost exclusively of SpaceX employees and people connected to the company.
The initial vote tally was 173 in favor of incorporation and 4 against; only 143 votes were needed for the measure to pass.
“It’s officially statistically impossible for the measure to fail,” Cameron County Elections Administrator Remi Garza said Saturday night. “Cameron County is about to have a new city.”
Now that the vote has passed, commissioners in the county will canvass the results within two weeks, Garza said. A judge will then assign an order declaring the results of the election and the official incorporation of the new city.
The new city of Starbase covers about 1½ square miles at the southern tip of Texas, a coastal spot nestled against the Mexico border. The area is home to SpaceX headquarters, and it’s where the company builds its boosters and engines and launches its huge Starship rocket on test flights.
The ballot result was a much-needed win for Musk, who has faced widespread backlash over the past few months for his involvement with President Donald Trump’s administration. Musk was installed as chief of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and oversaw sweeping layoffs and cuts across federal agencies.
In response, protests against Musk erupted around the country and profits plummeted at the billionaire’s electric car company, Tesla.
Now, SpaceX will have the company town that Musk first publicly proposed in 2021.
In addition to incorporating the new city, Saturday’s election also selected Starbase’s first mayor — Bobby Pedden — and two city commissioners — Jordan Buss and Jenna Petrzelka. The candidates for all three positions ran unopposed, and all three are employees of SpaceX.
There were 283 people eligible to cast ballots in Saturday’s Cameron County special election, according to county election records. Eligibility was determined based on if a resident’s home would fall within the boundaries of the proposed new city.
Neither SpaceX nor Musk has detailed the purpose of incorporating a city around the rocket company’s operations. There has been speculation, however, that having greater municipal control of the area could ease some of the bureaucracy and restrictions around SpaceX’s tests and rocket launches.
At the moment, SpaceX must obtain permission from authorities in Cameron County to close a highway and shut down public access to Boca Chica Beach and Boca Chica State Park to keep people safe during rocket launches.
The frequent closures have contributed to legal complaints against SpaceX, and have drawn protests from local residents and activists, including the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas, the South Texas Environmental Justice Network and Border Workers United, as reported by CNBC.
Now that SpaceX operates within the newly incorporated city of Starbase, things may soon change — though perhaps not without resistance.
“Right now that authority lies solely within Cameron County and my office, and we think that we’ve proven to be good collaborators and partners with SpaceX in their operations and also in making sure and providing enough notice and public access to Boca Chica Beach,” Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino told NBC News.
Trevino said any changes to the established procedures would be unnecessary.
“If it’s not broken, it doesn’t need to be fixed,” he said

Miami Grand Prix: Lando Norris ‘very happy’ after qualifying despite missing out on pole to Max Verstappen
Miami Grand Prix: Lando Norris ‘very happy’ after qualifying despite missing out on pole to Max Verstappen
In McLaren’s view, Red Bull have not been painting the most accurate picture of the competitive picture between the two teams.
“Red Bull, they are very good at making fast cars,” Stella said. “They are very exceptionally good, I would say, at driving fast cars, and they are extremely good also in creating the narrative to their advantage.
“They exploit every possible opportunity to stay in the competition, and some of these opportunities sometimes is to create the narrative, like, ‘oh, we are making miracles here, the others should win every single practice session and qualifying and race.’
“This is the narrative created by some of our competitors, which we read occasionally and then we change the page and we focus on ourselves.”
The grid sets up an intriguing race. The title contenders are in reverse order, with an interloper between Norris and Piastri in the form of Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli.
And Norris scents an opportunity to nail his first victory since the opening race of the season in Australia back in March.
In qualifying, he made errors at the last corner on both his laps, each time costing about 0.2secs, so he knows the pace is in the car.
“Max has always been good in qualifying and as a team we have struggled a little more in qualifying, whether that’s set-up or what, I’m not too sure,” Norris said.
“We know the Red Bulls are running high downforce, which allows them especially with the DRS (in qualifying) to be a lot more competitive. But it’s a long race and we know we have good pace in both conditions.
“I don’t just expect competition from Max. Kimi’s been quick all weekend and Oscar has been as well. So yeah, I just expect a tough race from all accounts.”

Elon Musk’s Starbase on its way to becoming a Texas city after lopsided early voting results
Elon Musk’s Starbase on its way to becoming a Texas city after lopsided early voting results
McALLEN, Texas (AP) — The South Texas home of Elon Musk’s SpaceX rocket company is on its way to becoming an official city with a galactic name: Starbase.
A vote Saturday to formally organize Starbase as a city was being approved by a lopsided margin by a small group of voters who live there and are mostly Musk’s employees at SpaceX.
Musk celebrated in a post on his social platform X, saying it is “now a real city!”
Starbase is the facility and launch site for the SpaceX rocket program that is under contract with the Department of Defense and NASA that hopes to send astronauts back to the moon and someday to Mars.
Musk first floated the idea of Starbase in 2021 and approval of the new city was all but certain. Of the 283 eligible voters in the area, most are believed to be Starbase workers.
The election victory was personal for Musk. The billionaire’s popularity has diminished since he became the chain-saw-wielding public face of President Donald Trump’s federal job and spending cuts, and profits at his Tesla car company have plummeted.
SpaceX has generally drawn widespread support from local officials for its jobs and investment in the area.
But the creation of an official company town has also drawn critics who worry it will expand Musk’s personal control over the area, with potential authority to close a popular beach and state park for launches.
Companion efforts to the city vote include bills in the state Legislature to shift that authority from the county to the new town’s mayor and city council.
All these measures come as SpaceX is asking federal authorities for permission to increase the number of South Texas launches from five to 25 a year.
The city at the southern tip of Texas near the Mexico border is only about 1.5 square miles (3.9 square kilometers), crisscrossed by a few roads and dappled with airstream trailers and modest midcentury homes.
SpaceX officials have said little about exactly why they to want a company town and did not respond to emailed requests for comment.
“We need the ability to grow Starbase as a community,” Starbase General Manager Kathryn Lueders wrote to local officials in 2024 with the request to get the city issue on the ballot.
The letter said the company already manages roads and utilities, as well as “the provisions of schooling and medical care” for those living on the property.
SpaceX officials have told lawmakers that granting the city authority to close the beach would streamline launch operations. SpaceX rocket launches and engine tests, and even just moving certain equipment around the launch base requires the closure of a local highway and access to Boca Chica State Park and Boca Chica Beach.
Critics say beach closure authority should stay with the county government, which represents a broader population that uses the beach and park. Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino, Jr. has said the county has worked well with SpaceX and there is no need for change.
Another proposed bill would make it a Class B misdemeanor with up to 180 days in jail if someone doesn’t comply with an order to evacuate the beach.
The South Texas Environmental Justice Network, which has organized protests against the city vote and the beach access issue, held another demonstration Saturday that attracted dozens of people.
Josette Hinojosa, whose young daughter was building sandcastle nearby, said she was taking part to try to ensure continued access to a beach her family has enjoyed for generations.
With SpaceX, Hinojosa said, “Some days it’s closed, and some days you get turned away,”
Organizer Christopher Basaldú, a member of the Carrizo/Comecrudo Nation of Texas tribe, said his ancestors have long been in the area, where the Rio Grande meets the Gulf.
“It’s not just important,” he said, “it’s sacred.”
