  1. Aussies shine to set up European club rugby final duel Aussies shine to set up European club rugby final duel *********** rugby stars – including three former Wallabies now thriving overseas – have excelled in the semi-finals of the Champions Cup to set up a showdown in Europe’s top club event. Pete Samu, the 33-time capped Wallaby, went over for a glorious early try as Union Bordeaux-Begles ended Toulouse’s two-year unbeaten run in the tournament, brilliantly winning the all-French battle 35-18 victory at the Matmut Atlantique on Sunday to reach the final for the first time. In the final later this month, Bordeaux-Begles, also featuring ex-Australia lock Adam Coleman, will play English side Northampton, who were propelled to a famous, unexpected and rather epic 37-34 victory over Irish favourites Leinster in Dublin on Saturday. The ‘Saints’ emerged triumphant with five tries, including one from their popular *********** fullback James Ramm, while former Wallabies’ back-rower Josh Kemeny shone and Angus Scott-Young came off the bench to help them become the first English finalists since Exeter won in 2020. The five Aussies will do battle in the final on May 24 in Cardiff’s Principality Stadium as Northampton seek to end French Top 14 clubs’ recent domination of the title. It won’t be easy for Northampton with Bordeaux-Begles having looked mightily strong in kayoing the six-time champions with tries from Samu, Louis Bielle-Biarrey (2), Pierre Bochaton and Ben Tameifuna, while Matthieu Jalibert and Maxime Lucu impressed with valuable booted points. Toulouse, who’d been unbeaten since losing in the 2023 semi-finals to Leinster, responded with two tries from Dimitri Delibes and Pierre-Louis Barassi but were crucially weakened by the absence of the injured Antoine Dupont, Blair Kinghorn, Thomas Ramos and Peato Mauvaka. “They had a 10-minute spell of domination and we did not crack. We’re so happy to qualify in front of our fans as we’ve been through very tough moments,” said Jalibert, referring to Toulouse’s 59-3 win against UBB in last season’s Top 14 final. The 33-year-old veteran Tasmanian lock Coleman, capped 38 times by Australia, is of Tongan descent and now playing his international rugby for the Pacific Island. He only lasted 28 minutes after failing a head injury assessment following his tackle on Julien Marchand. On Saturday, Sydneysider Ramm, the former Waratahs wing who played just once for Australia’s under-20s but hasn’t yet played played a senior international even though he’s eligible for New Zealand, England and the Wallabies, was a stand-out at 15. Kemeny, who played at the last World Cup for the Wallabies, was also in fine form in the back row battle but did receive a late yellow for a high shot on Rabah Slimani that forced the Saints into an almighty backs-to-the-wall struggle to eke out their three-point win. 2. Lady Gaga breaks silence after police foil anti-LGBTQ terror group’s plan to attack her record breaking concert Lady Gaga breaks silence after police foil anti-LGBTQ terror group’s plan to attack her record breaking concert Rio de Janeiro police say that they foiled a massive terror attack targeting Lady Gaga’s record breaking concert on Copacabana Beach, which drew an estimated 2.1 million people on Saturday. Lady Gaga’s team has broken their silence on the attempted attack, which authorities believe was planned by a grew that spreads anti-LGBTQ hate speech. “We learned about this alleged threat via media reports this morning. Prior to and during the show, there were no known safety concerns, nor any communication from the police or authorities to Lady Gaga regarding any potential risks. Her team worked closely with law enforcement throughout the planning and execution of the concert and all parties were confident in the safety measures in place,” a spokesperson for the singer said. “The suspects were recruiting participants, including minors, to carry out coordinated attacks using improvised explosives and Molotov cocktails,” the police said in a statement. The justice ministry said the recruiters identified themselves as members of Gaga’s global fan base, known as the “Little Monsters.” The operation to apprehend the terror suspects was codenamed “Operation Fake Monster.” According to police, the attack was planned through a social media campaign encouraging young people to attack the concert. Lady Gaga performs in Brazil on Saturday (AP) Local authorities believe the group was trying to target the country’s LGBTQ+ community. “They were clearly saying that they were planning an attack at Lady Gaga’s concert motivated by ******* orientation,” Felipe Cury, secretary of the Rio police, said Sunday, according to the Associated Press. The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro State, collaborating with the justice ministry, uncovered the plan, which they linked to a group promoting hate speech and radicalizing teenagers. This group spread content online “aimed at gaining notoriety in order to attract more viewers, more participants — most of them teenagers, many of them children,” Rio Police chief Luiz Lima said, according to the outlet. This group reportedly encourages self-harm and violent acts as a means of social connection. The concert, a historic event for the American pop icon, proceeded without incident, according to Rio City Hall. The operation was based on a report by the ministry’s cyberoperations lab following a tip-off from Rio state police intelligence, which uncovered digital cells encouraging violent behavior among teenagers using coded language and extremist symbolism. A man described as the group’s leader was arrested in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul for ******** possession of a firearm, while a teenager in Rio de Janeiro was detained for storing child ************. Authorities carried out over a dozen search and seizure warrants across the states of Rio de Janeiro, Mato Grosso, Rio Grande do Sul and Sao Paulo. Prior to the concert, it was reported that there would be 5,000 security agents as well as facial recognition software deployed at the concert. A Lady Gaga fan stands outside the Copacabana Palace hotel, where the pop diva is staying in Rio de Janeiro (AP) “Tonight, we’re making history. Thank you for making history with me,” Gaga told a screaming crowd in the Brazilian capital. The Mother Monster, as she is known, kicked off the show at around 10.10pm local time with her 2011 song “Bloody Mary”. The singer performed her classic hits, including “Poker Face” and “Alejandro,” switching between an array of costumes, including a dress with the colours of the Brazilian flag. Some fans – many of them young – arrived on the beach at the crack of dawn to secure a good spot, armed with snacks and drinks. They spent the day under a blazing sun, while others perched in trees, determined to get a panoramic view. “Today is the best day of my life,” said Manoela Dobes, a 27-year-old designer who was wearing a dress plastered with a photograph from when she met Lady Gaga in the United States in 2019. “It’s surreal to be here.” In the wake of the concert, Lady Gaga paid tribute to her fans in a post on Instagram. “Nothing could prepare me for the feeling I had during last night’s show — the absolute pride and joy I felt singing for the people of Brazil. The sight of the crowd during my opening songs took my breath away. Your heart shines so bright, your culture is so vibrant and special, I hope you know how grateful I am to have shared this historical moment with you.” Fans watch Lady Gaga rehearse a day ahead of her free concert, on Copacabana beach, in Rio de Janeiro (AP) Madonna turned Copacabana Beach into a massive dance floor last year with her own free show at the iconic stretch of seaside. The large-scale performances are part of an effort led by City Hall to boost economic activity after carnival and New Year’s Eve festivities and the upcoming month-long Saint John’s Day celebrations in June. The country’s largest carriers – the local unit of Chile’s LATAM Airlines, Gol and Azul – all reported on Friday that they have been operating more flights that are close to full. 4. Trump says “I don’t know, I’m not a lawyer” if everyone is entitled to due process Trump says “I don’t know, I’m not a lawyer” if everyone is entitled to due process President Trump said he doesn’t know if everyone in the U.S., citizens or non-citizens, is entitled to due process — the constitutional command stated in both the Fifth and the Fourteenth Amendment. “I don’t know. I’m not, I’m not a lawyer. I don’t know,” Mr. Trump told NBC News’ Kristen Welker on “Meet the Press” after she asked him whether he agreed that everyone on U.S. soil is entitled to due process in the court of law. When asked by Welker in the interview aired Sunday if he thinks he has to uphold the Constitution as president, Mr. Trump also said, “I don’t know.” “I have to respond by saying again, and I have brilliant lawyers that work for me, and they are going to obviously follow what the Supreme Court said,” Mr. Trump said. His comments come as he discussed the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the El Salvadoran native who is married to a U.S. citizen and was living in Maryland before the Trump administration mistakenly deported him in March. Immigration and Customs Enforcement admitted in a court filing that the deportation of the Baltimore father was an “administrative error” and an “oversight.” Last month, a federal judge and the U.S. Supreme Court ordered the Trump administration to facilitate the return of Abrego Garcia to the U.S., but Abrego Garcia remains in a detention facility in Santa Ana, El Salvador, after spending almost a month at the country’s notorious Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT). When asked about the delay in returning Abrego Garcia to the U.S. and whether he’s defying the Supreme Court, Mr. Trump told NBC that Attorney General Pam Bondi and the Justice Department had interpreted the court’s 9-0 decision differently. “They’re not viewing the decision the way you said it. They don’t view it that way at all. They think it’s a totally different decision,” Mr. Trump said. “I have the power to ask for him to come back if I’m instructed by the attorney general that it’s legal to do so,” the president added. “But the decision as to whether or not he should come back will be the head of El Salvador. He’s a very capable man.” President Nayib Bukele has said he won’t return Abrego Garcia to the U.S. During his visit to the White House last month, Bukele referred to Abrego Garcia as a “terrorist,” and said, “I don’t have the power to return him to the United States.” Mr. Trump also said in the interview that aired Sunday that there’s a possibility that the Department of Justice will go back to the Supreme Court and ask the justices to clarify their order to the administration to “facilitate” Abrego Garcia’s return. The president and the Justice Department have said that Abrego Garcia shouldn’t be in the country because of his alleged involvement with MS-13. The Trump administration, including its “border czar” Tom Homan, claimed that Abrego Garcia’s finger tattoos are among “one of many” proofs that he’s involved with the gang. “He seems certainly like a very dangerous, very bad person,” the president told Welker, referencing the audio released last week by the Department of Homeland Security of Abrego Garcia’s wife when she filed a protective order against him in 2020, alleging domestic violence. Jennifer Vasquez also filed another protective order against him back in 2021 over allegations of domestic violence, according to court records obtained by CBS News. Abrego Garcia has no criminal record and his family says he was never involved with a gang. Since Abrego Garcia’s deportation, Vasquez has been outspoken in support of his return. At a rally outside the White House on Thursday, she said her husband “was thrown away to die.” “My children and I had to watch Trump and Bukele’s administration laugh at our pain,” Vasquez said. “The highest court ruled that Kilmar should be returned home. So why are they still waiting? Enough is enough.” More Kiki Intarasuwan Kiki Intarasuwan is a news editor for CBS News & Stations. 5. I tried a hidden tool in Edge and Opera. Now it’s hard to go back to Safari I tried a hidden tool in Edge and Opera. Now it’s hard to go back to Safari Table of Contents Table of Contents Safari is bad at organization Pinboards in Opera browser Collections in Microsoft Edge Imagine a browser that lets you create a visual diary, one that saves all your favorite content with rich previews and clean organization, while syncing across all your devices? Well, you won’t find that nirvana on Safari, but you can experience it on Opera and Microsoft Edge. Over the past couple of years, my browser loyalty has shifted wildly. From the comfort of Chrome and Safari to experiments with Firefox and Arc, I’ve tried to find a home elsewhere, but haven’t been able to stick with one. I love my extensions, and that’s one of the core reasons I have spent most of my professional time with Chromium-based browsers. But the situation gets trickier as one shifts from desktop to mobile. My love for tablets keeps me from committing to a desktop-only experience, but that comes with its own set of compromises. Eventually, I realized that the best browser is one where I can access all my ideas, highlights, and content — with seamless syncing thrown into the mix. Safari, unfortunately, offers a shoddy experience. Surprisingly, Microsoft’s Edge and Opera do a fantastic job at it. After experimenting with the underrated Collections feature in Edge and Pinboards in Opera, I don’t see myself returning to Safari anytime soon. Safari is bad at organization The best that Safari has to offer is reading lists. Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends Apple’s browser allows you to organize your content as tab groups, which can thankfully sync across devices. But as a journalist and science reporter, I have way too many tab groups open at any given time, which means they quickly eat up system resources. The only other option you have is to save webpages as bookmarks, add them to a reading list, or save a local copy. But when you are juggling between half a dozen groups, each with 15-20 tabs for research, saving them in an orderly manner is not possible. It’s not just about work, but also curating a list of content you want to read later. Safari’s approach is neither efficient nor elegant. That also explains why tools such as Pocket are a hot favorite in the Apple community for organizing web content. Moreover, the Reading Lists in Safari are neither shareable nor do they allow any form of collaboration. Plus, they look bland without any content previews, and don’t support any custom additions, either. All they do is save a URL in a container. Pinboards in Opera browser The default view of cards on an Opera pinboard. Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends This is arguably the most rewarding content organizer I have seen so far. Think of it as Pinterest boards, but for Opera browser. The idea is meaningful, and has been executed beautifully with a host of extra conveniences in tow. To begin with, you can directly create a pinboard and add the webpage you are surfing at the moment by clicking on the pin icon in the URL bar. Alternatively, you can add it to any of your existing pinboards from the drop-down box. Pinboard cards arranged as a vertically scrolling feed. Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends The dedicated pinboard page is where things get interesting, and a tad more convenient. For example, if you have a dozen tabs active, but don’t want to add them one after another, you can just open the desired board and import them all together using the “add tabs” feature. Each item card on a pinboard is also customizable. You can add your own title, brief description, and a custom image to go with it. Else, the URL you add will automatically pick the web preview, with the default article image in tow. This is how shared Pinboards appear in the Safari browser, Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends As you add custom descriptions, the size of the cards is dynamically adjusted. It may start to look a bit haphazard, but there’s a beautiful reprieve available. Instead of using the default and dense formats for arranging the cards, I went with the Spacious template. This one stacks all the cards on a pinboard vertically, like a social media feed. This layout also gives more horizontal space to each card, like a news feed with large thumbnails. I prefer the vertically scrolling format a lot more than the side-by-side stacking of the item cards. You can add custom images to any card on the Pinboard. Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends You can customize each pinboard with its own wallpaper to suit the theme, copy entire boards, and move around the cards using a simple drag and drop. You can even adjust the layout of the pinboards, just the way you adjust the appearance of the cards. What I like the most about Opera’s pinboards is that not only do they sync across devices, but they can also be shared. As soon as you flick the share toggle, a custom URL is generated that you can share with any person in a view-only format. Condensed view of the cards on a Pinboard. Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends The recipient can see the pinboards in any browser of their choice, just the way they were created in Opera. Moreover, you don’t need to go through any login or access requirements in order to see pinboards shared by another person. Collections in Microsoft Edge Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends To get work done across my tablet and desktop, I save all my ideas, research materials, and quick access tools in their dedicated Opera pinboards. Whenever I am on the move, I simply AirDrop the pinboard links across my devices and proceed with my workflow across any device of my choice. Microsoft’s Edge browser is not too far behind. In Edge, you get a dedicated system called Collections. Unlike Opera, which opens Pinboards in a dedicated tab, Edge opens Collections in a side panel on the right edge of the screen, which is less intrusive and more convenient. Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends In order to add a page to a specific collection, you simply open it in the sidebar using a keyboard shortcut and hit the “Add current page” button at the top. You don’t have to go through the hassle of copying and pasting the URL. Unlike Opera, however, you can’t import all the active tabs together. Edge, however, offers its own set of perks. With a single click, you can open all the links in a single collection across different tabs, or in an entirely different window. For extra privacy, Edge also offers a one-click route to opening all these links in incognito mode. Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends Another neat facility is that with a single click, you can also copy all the items in a collection to the native clipboard. The items are copied just as they appear in the side panel. That includes the headlines, source names, URL hyperlink, and the thumbnail, as well. You can even add custom notes atop each collection for future reference. Collections in Edge are synced across all your devices, as long as you are signed in with your Microsoft account. Another crucial benefit is that Edge seamlessly integrates Copilot, opening the doors for Deep Research queries. Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends This feature has saved me on a handful of occasions where I lost my tab groups and couldn’t recover them. In Safari, the only recourse available to me was digging into the history and going through the tedious process of recovering one tab at a time. For carrying my work across different platforms and devices, Collections and Pinboards serve as a fantastic path to catalog my research and resume the work at my own pace. I wish Safari offered a similar perk, and until that happens, I am not returning to Apple’s browser for my day-to-day work. 6. Royal Family hopes nothing distracts from VE Day commemorations Royal Family hopes nothing distracts from VE Day commemorations The Royal Family is hoping “nothing will detract or distract” from VE Day commemorations this week, which fall days after Prince Harry’s interview. The King and Queen are looking forward to the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe and the end to World War Two, Buckingham Palace said. Events begin on Monday with a military procession through central London after which members of the Royal Family will appear on the Buckingham Palace balcony. On Friday the Duke of Sussex spoke candidly with the BBC about his estrangement from his father and desire for reconciliation, after losing a court battle over his *** security. It is understood that, out of respect for surviving veterans, Buckingham Palace hopes “nothing will detract or distract from celebrating with full cheer and proud hearts that precious victory and those brave souls, on this most special and poignant of anniversaries”. King Charles and Queen Camilla will lead the nation in “celebrating, commemorating and giving thanks to the wartime generation whose selfless devotion duty and service should stand as an enduring example to us all – and must never be forgotten”, a Palace aide said. This years’ VE Day commemorations are the first to take place without any of the royals who were present 80 years ago. In 1945, large crowds gathered outside Buckingham Palace to catch a glimpse of King George VI, the Queen Mother, a young Queen Elizabeth II, and Princess Margaret. Those present on the balcony this year will watch the traditional Red Arrows flyover. Later in the afternoon, the Royals will also host a tea party for war veterans, their families and other members of the wartime generation in the palace gardens. Then, on 8 May, the King, Queen and other royals will attend a thanksgiving service with veterans at Westminster Abbey before the royal couple attends Horse Guards Parade for a celebratory concert. None of the Royal Family has publicly commented on the interview from Prince Harry. On Friday, he revealed that his father refuses to speak to him and, given King Charles’s ******* diagnosis, he does not know how much longer the King has left. The comments came after the duke lost a legal challenge against the British government over his security while in the *** – a decision which he says has left him vulnerable to threats on his life and would prevent his return. Buckingham Palace responded to the interview – which included the prince’s claim that his court defeat was an “establishment stitch-up” – by saying the issues had been repeatedly examined by the courts which had reached the same conclusion each time. The Home Office, meanwhile, said it was “pleased” the judgement was in the government’s favour, adding the ***’s security system is “rigorous and proportionate”. The Metal Gear games set the standard for the best stealth games ever made, but creator Hideo Kojima also wanted to push the medium forward by introducing a level of storytelling previously unheard of in games. Like playing the Call of Duty games in order, each Metal Gear game can be tracked along our real-world timeline, though with plenty of liberties taken in terms of technology and historical events. With so many spinoffs and remakes that change the title, like Metal Gear Delta: Snake Eater, this is one of the toughest series to know how to approach as a newcomer. Thankfully, we’ve been following Snake’s adventures since the beginning and can easily tell you how to play the games in both release order and chronologically. All Metal Gear games in release order Konami Release order is typically the best way to enjoy the Metal Gear games, but isn’t as smooth of a progression as it once was since several remakes have come out. This will still preserve the narrative throughline, complete with surprise reveals and shifting back and forth in the timeline to slowly piece together the complex web of events Kojima spun. Even longtime fans have trouble putting all the pieces in order, but there is a very clear timeline the series follows. If you prefer your storytelling to be more linear and don’t mind some whiplash between entries in terms of graphics and mechanics, then playing the games chronologically is the way to go. Since the franchise wasn’t intended to be played this way, we don’t suggest it given the choice since many of the reveals and twists won’t be as impactful without past or future context from the games, but it won’t ruin the experience by any means. This is the full Metal Gear chronology, leaving out any games that are non-cannon or set in alternate timelines. 10. Asus Zenbook A14 vs Microsoft Surface Laptop 7: a very narrow win for Microsoft Asus Zenbook A14 vs Microsoft Surface Laptop 7: a very narrow win for Microsoft Table of Contents Table of Contents Specs and configurations Design Performance Display and audio Portability It’s very close, but the Surface Laptop 7 comes out ahead The Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 has been one of the best laptops you can buy, along with the best example yet of the new wave of Windows on ARM laptops. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X lineup has been the driver of this movement, and the Surface Laptop 7 makes great use of the platform. But it’s not alone. The Asus Zenbook A14 combines the Snapdragon X with a lightweight chassis and a reasonably efficient OLED display for a great build and battery life. Can it compete with Microsoft’s best laptop? Specs and configurations Asus Zenbook A14 Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 Dimensions 12.23 x 8.42 x 0.63 inches 11.85 x 8.66 x 0.69 inches Weight 2.4 pounds 2.96 pounds Processor Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus X1P-42-100 Snapdragon X Plus Snapdragon X Elite Graphics Qualcomm Adreno Adreno GPU RAM 16GB 32GB 16GB 32GB 64GB Display 14.0-inch 16:10 FHD+ (1920 x 1200) OLED, 60Hz 13.8-inch 3:2 (2304 x 1536) IPS, 120Hz Storage 512GB SSD 1TB SSD 256GB 512GB 1TB Touch Yes Yes Ports 2 x USB4 1 x USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 1 x HDMI 2.1 1 x 3.5mm headphone jack 2 x USB4 1 x USB-A 3.1 1 x Surface Connect 1 x 3.5mm audio jack Wireless Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetoth 5.3 Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 Webcam 1080p with infrared camera for Windows 11 Hello 1080p with infrared camera for Windows 11 Hello support Operating system Windows 11 on ARM Windows 11 on ARM Battery 70 watt-hour 54 watt-hour Price $1,000+ $1,000+ Rating 4 out of 5 stars 4.5 out of 5 stars The Zenbook A14 only has two available configurations. There’s the $1,000 base model with a Snapdragon X Plus chipset, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and a 14.0-inch FHD+ OLED display. For an extra $200, you get 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD. For the same $1,000, you can get the Surface Laptop 7 base model wit ha Snapdragon X Plust, 16GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, and a 13.8-inch 2304 x 1536 IPS display. You can upgrade to a 512GB SSD for an additional $200 and to 1TB for $400 more. The Snapdragon X Elite ups the base price to $1,400 with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD, and then you can choose 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD for a grand total of $2,400. That makes the Surface Laptop 7 the more expensive laptop by a fair margin, at the highest configuration. Design Surface Laptop 7 Luke Larsen / Digital Trends The Surface Laptop 7 is the culmination of several generations of refinement, resulting in a laptop that’s incredibly well-built — as are all Surface devices — and enjoys a rather iconic aesthetic. It’s all-aluminum and comes in several attractive colors, with just the right blend of tones to give the laptop a modern, elegant look. The small display bezels framing a taller 3:2 aspect ratio stands out, and handling the Surface Laptop 7 attests to Microsoft’s attention to detail in its premier hardware lineup. Everything just feels great, including the hinge that allows opening the lid with one hand and keeps it firmly in place. But, Microsoft isn’t the only company that makes quality Windows machines. Asus Zenbooks have long rivaled Surface in terms of build quality, with all-metal designs that feel as robust. The Zenbook A14 uses a new material that Asus developed, called Ceraluminum, which puts aluminum through a process that creates a unique, ceramic-like feel that’s also incredibly strong. That makes it incredibly light at 2.4 pounds versus the Surface Laptop 7’s 2.96 pounds. And, it does so without sacrificing a solid feel, with a warm touch that feels weird at first glance but grows on you the more you use it. My one complaint is with the Zenbook A14’s hinge, which is too loose and allows the lid to flop around a bit. Aesthetically, the Zenbook A14 is more minimalist and doesn’t feature the wide range of color ways. The Surface Laptop 7 is just a little better in terms of its build and aesthetics. But you can’t go wrong with the Zenbook A14, either. In terms of their keyboards, it’s another close battle. The Zenbook A14 has a spacious layout with large keycaps, and its switches are light and snappy. The Surface Laptop 7 has an equally comfortable layout, and its switches are firmer and deeper. I’d give Microsoft’s keyboard the nod here, given the Asus switches’ bottoming action that I didn’t quite find as precise. Both are very good, but again, the Surface Laptop 7 comes out on top. The Zenbook A14 has a slightly larger touchpad than the Surface Laptop 7, but it’s a mechanical version. I tend to prefer haptic touchpads, and the Surface Laptop 7 has a very good example with all of the customization options that the technology affords. This is a ******* advantage for the Surface Laptop 7 than we’ve seen so far. I’d give the Zenbook A14 the nod in terms of connectivity, primarily given its inclusion of an HDMI 2.1 port. But, the Surface Laptop 7 has a Surface Connect power connection that keeps both fast USB4 ports available for use. That’s a plus. The Surface Laptop 7 also has the latest wireless connectivity, while the Zenbook A14 is one generation behind. Finally, both laptops have 1080p webcams that offer up excellent video quality. And, both have the same 45 tera operations per second (TOPS) Neural Processing Unit that powers Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC AI features. You’ll get full support for everything Microsoft has to offer in terms of efficient on-device AI processing, although Asus does add in some additional AI-enabled features. Performance Luke Larsen / Digital Trends Both laptops are built around Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X chipset, but the Surface Laptop 7 offers the Snapdragon X Elite with 12 cores and the fastest available speeds. The Zenbook A14 uses the 8-core Snapdragon X Plus with just eight cores and running at a slower speed. The Adreno integrated graphics on the Snapdragon X Elite is also faster than the Plus model. Overall, that makes the Surface Laptop 7 a faster laptop overall. I’m providing results from the larger 15-inch model, but performance will be similar on the smaller Surface Laptop 7. It will be faster for the most demanding productivity users, although gamers won’t find a huge difference in performance and neither will creators. Geekbench 6 (single/multi) Cinebench R24 (single/multi/battery) 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Asus Zenbook A14 (Snapdragon X Plus / Adreno) 2,436 / 11,242 108 / 690 3,262 Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 (Snapdragon X Elite / Adreno) 2,388 / 13,215 105 / 826 5,880 Display and audio Mark Coppock / Digital Trends The Zenbook A14 has 14.0-inch 16:10 FHD+ (1920 x 1200) OLED display that has the technology’s usual bright, dynamic colors and inky *******. Asus compromised with a lower resolution to save on battery life, so if you want a really sharp display, it won’t stand up to the Surface Laptop 7. That laptop has a 13.8-inch 3:2 IPS display running at 2304 x 1536. So, it’s sharper, and it’s also a very good IPS panel with its own very good colors. Both laptops look great for most uses, and the Surface Laptop 7’s display benefits from a faster 120Hz refresh rate that makes the Windows user interface run more smoothly. According to our colorimeter, the Zenbook A14 has wider and more accurate colors that will be better for creative work, and it has near-perfect ******* and very high contrast. The Surface Laptop 7 has a brighter display with slightly narrower and less accurate colors. Its contrast is very good for an IPS display, but can’t match the Zenbook A14. If you prefer OLED and don’t mind seeing more pixels, then you’ll love the Zenbook A14’s display. The Surface Laptop 7’s display is also very good, and it’s sharper and faster. Some might consider this to be a draw. Asus Zenbook A14 (OLED) Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 (IPS) Brightness (nits) 411 561 AdobeRGB gamut 97% 85% sRGB gamut 100% 100% DCI-P3 gamut 100% 95% Accuracy (DeltaE, lower is better) 0.88 1.27 The Zenbook A14 has dual downward-firing speaker that are just okay, compared to the Surface Laptop 7’s audio system that projects sound up from speaker behind the keyboard. It has louder and clearer audio and more bass, and so you’ll be less likely to reach for a pair of headphones. Portability Mark Coppock / Digital Trends Both laptops are very portable, with the Surface Laptop 7 being slightly narrower and shallower but the Zenbook A14 being thinner and lighter. You’ll likely appreciate the Zenbook A14’s lighter weight more than anything. Even though it’s lighter, the Asus packs in a larger 70 watt-hour battery that helps offset the more power-hungry OLED display. The Surface Laptop 7’s smaller 54 watt-hour battery benefits from the more power-efficient IPS panel. I list the battery test results for the larger 15-inch Surface Laptop 7, which might be an hour or so less with the smaller machine. So, it’s likely that it’s going to last around the same time as the Zenbook A14, making them both some of the longest-lasting Windows laptops ever. We’re talking multi-day battery life when doing lighter productivity tasks. Web Video Asus Zenbook A14 (Snapdragon X Plus) 15 hours, 4 minutes 21 hours, 55 minutes Apple MacBook Air 13 (M4 10/8) 14 hours, 21 minutes 22 hours, 39 minutes It’s very close, but the Surface Laptop 7 comes out ahead These are two very good laptops. They’re well-built, have great performance and even greater battery life, and they’re attractive enough. In many ways, they’re very closely matched. But, the Surface Laptop 7 just has some finer points, like a better haptic touchpad, an overall more comfortable design, and faster performance that gives it the edge. Note, though, that you’ll pay a price. If you want the least expensive laptop, then the Zenbook A14 is well worth your consideration. Smart retirement moves to make in your 40s and 50s Smart retirement moves to make in your 40s and 50s Listen and subscribe to Decoding Retirement on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you find your favorite podcasts. If you’re in your 40s or 50s, and you’re worried about all the ups and downs in the stock and bond markets, Chris Littlefield, the president of retirement and income solutions at Principal Financial Group, has some advice for you. “I think obviously with the uncertainty, the market volatility, I think people that have got a financial plan … should stick to their financial plan and not overreact to what’s happening in the market at any particular time,” Littlefield said in a recent episode of Decoding Retirement (see video above or listen below). This embedded content is not available in your region. And if you don’t have a plan, get one. Best case, you should get professional advice, as everyone would benefit from some “holistic advice” about how to address the needs that they will have in retirement, he said. “They should be working with somebody,” he added. “They can either speak to their employer and their retirement plan service provider, or they can also speak with an adviser.” Read more: Retirement planning: A step-by-step guide No matter what, especially during times of market volatility, Littlefield cautioned retirement savers to avoid one of the biggest mistakes investors make. “I think one of the biggest mistakes that I see people make is they try to time the market,” he said. For example, investors often attempt to adjust their asset allocations — their mix of stocks, bonds, and cash — in response to short-term market swings. The problem with that approach, Littlefield explained, is that it requires two critical decisions. “It’s one thing to sell,” he said, “but you also have to figure out when to buy, … and if you’re out of the market in the first couple days after the market rebounds, you missed a very large percentage of the returns.” His advice: “If you’ve got a good asset allocation, you’ve got a good plan, stay the course. Don’t let the short-term news affect what is a long-term horizon.” Stuart Beare, Director of Tulleys Farm, inspects some of the half a million tulips that have been grown in Turner’s Hill, southern Britain, on March 28, 2024. REUTERS/Toby Melville · REUTERS / Reuters Littlefield also recommended maximizing every opportunity to save on a tax-free basis and, if you can afford it, making catch-up contributions. “There are still significant opportunities for you when you achieve the age of 50 to save even more than the limits that are provided by the 401(k) plan,” he said. The standard annual employee contribution limit for 401(k) plans in 2025 is $23,500. For participants ages 50 and older, the standard catch-up contribution limit in 2025 is $7,500. Story Continues This means individuals over 50 can contribute up to $31,000 to their 401(k) plan for the year. And starting in 2025, individuals ages 60, 61, 62, or 63 are eligible for a higher catch-up contribution limit under the SECURE 2.0 Act. Read more: How much money should I have saved by 50? According to Littlefield, it’s best practice for individuals to have an investment policy statement to guide their investment strategies, but very few are truly equipped to do it on their own. And that’s where professional guidance can help. One option is to seek out a managed account, which is an arrangement “where you have somebody who’s advising on the asset allocation and helping you with the rebalancing,” Littlefield said. However, professional guidance is also often built into products like target-date funds. These funds, he said, provide professional asset allocation, automatic rebalancing over time, and exposure to a wide range of asset classes. Littlefield suggested using a target-date fund while you’re young, and then moving to a managed account when you’re approaching retirement might be a sound strategy. It’s a more “personalized” approach, he said, adding, “It takes into account your individual circumstance as opposed to just your age.” That said, “there is a cost for providing that advice,” he said about managed accounts. Target-date funds typically have an expense ratio, which is an annual fee expressed as a percentage of your total investment in the fund. This fee covers the costs of managing the underlying investments and the rebalancing of the portfolio over time. Of note, the average expense ratio for target-date funds has been trending downward. Data from Morningstar in 2023 indicated an average asset-weighted fee of just 0.30%. However, fees can range from as low as 0.08% to over 1%. Managed accounts usually have a fee that is separate from the investment management fees of the underlying funds. Fees for managed accounts can vary considerably but often range from 0.25% to 0.75% of the account’s total balance per year. Some sources indicate a common range of 0.35% to 0.50%, while others note fees can go as high as 0.80% Littlefield acknowledged that many in their 40s and 50s have competing demands on their money, such as paying down debt, saving for a down payment on a house or children’s education, and saving for retirement. But, he said, “it’s really important for people to take a balanced approach to their financial wellness and not focus on any one particular goal.” Littlefield also suggested that the one mistake you ought to avoid is not saving for retirement in your 401(k). He said the ability to save on a tax-deferred basis is extremely valuable. Even before considering the benefits of maximizing an employer match, Littlefield said it’s important to note that a significant portion of workers — close to 50% across the industry — aren’t participating in their retirement plans at all, and that’s a major concern. 12. Half-Life 3 is reportedly not just in development, but nearly finished Half-Life 3 is reportedly not just in development, but nearly finished Another day, another Half-Life 3 rumor. At this point, we don’t need to say it, but we’re going to anyway: take this with a grain of salt. According to Tyler McVicker (transcribed by Eurogamer), Half-Life 3 is “playable, end-to-end.” He recently streamed a three-hour-long Q&A session where he dropped numerous hints about the widely anticipated sequel, including the suggestion that it could be released as soon as this summer. Normally, a rumor like this would be disregarded as just hearsay, but there has been other hints this year that stir up hope, however small, that the project could actually be on the way. In early January, the original voice actor for G-Man from Half-Life 2 posted a cryptic tweet stating an “unexpected surprise” was coming in 2025. Following that, fans found that Valve had two games listed under Upcoming Releases on Steam, but only one appeared. Since that time, code references to something called HLX have been discovered and are widely believed to be the codename for Half-Life 3. McVicker emphasized that the upcoming game was not a VR title. “HLX is being playtested so religiously and so widely that there are individuals who will just talk,” he claims. McVickers says he been offered story details “by people whom are trustworthy” and while he avoids those details, “there is information out there about the plot.” He said that Valve is “optimising and polishing” the game, and that it is “probably content-locked and if they’re not, then they’re mechanic locked.” In other words, if McVickers is correct, Half-Life 3 isn’t just in development — it’s almost ready for launch. Again, exercise skepticism here. There have been more Half-Life 3 rumors over the years than we can count; after all, there’s a reason its entire existence has become something of a meme. The game was worked on, but later cancelled for a variety of reasons. While it is possible that Half-Life 3 is making a comeback, we’ll wait for official word from Valve before getting too excited. 13. Exclusive: How one person built a stunning gaming PC inside a classic 1980s Mac Exclusive: How one person built a stunning gaming PC inside a classic 1980s Mac Table of Contents Table of Contents Out of the ordinary The build process What’s next? “When asking my friend who has built PCs in the past for some starting advice, he thought I was crazy and the idea wouldn’t work.” That’s not exactly the most auspicious way to start to project, but it wasn’t enough to stop Josh Greenwalt from building his dream PC. Yet unlike most of the best gaming PCs out there, this computer is deftly hidden inside a classic Apple Macintosh. That brings up a question or two. Would you build a custom PC inside a tiny, fiddly case? How about inside a device that’s not just known as one of the most iconic Macs of all time, but is also incredibly small and fiddly, and then make a fascinating build log video for the world to see? Not many of us would have the time, patience or ability to pull that off, but that’s just what tinkerer and computing enthusiast Josh Greenwalt managed to do. The name for his intriguing creation: the Joshintosh. What else? Josh Greenwalt When powered down, Greenwalt’s custom PC looks like an unassuming Macintosh SE, a computer that was available from 1987 to 1990 and today feels like a quaint relic of a bygone computing era. But power it on and you’ll see a respectable gaming PC that can power some of the best PC games available today. It even has a set of handmade screensavers that give it a series of cute and quirky facial expressions, from smiling to snoozing. Evidently, this is no retro computer still bound to its outdated hardware. On the inside you’ll find an AMD Ryzen 5 7600 processor, a Zotac Twin Edge Nvidia RTX 3070 graphics card, and 32GB of memory — embarrassingly, it’s slightly more advanced than my own gaming PC, despite looking like something that’s almost half a century past its prime. But then again, that’s the point. This is what’s known as a “sleeper” PC, one that is cleverly camouflaged to look like a dated curiosity yet is surprisingly powerful once you take a closer look. The fact that its disguise is one of the most iconic PC designs in history just adds to the appeal. Out of the ordinary Josh Greenwalt I first saw the Joshintosh in a post on Reddit, and it instantly caught my eye because it combined three things I’m passionate about: Macs, small-form-factor PCs, and gaming. Seeing it for the first time, I knew I had to find out more, including how it came about in the first place. So I fired off a few messages to Greenwalt to get his take on this unique machine. “I am a Mac user for work and personal stuff,” Greenwalt explained to me. But despite that, he ran into a problem that’s all too familiar for Mac gamers: “Most games are exclusive to Windows. It’s a big shame too because my MacBook is pretty specced out.” It’s an age-old problem for Mac gamers, where high-end specs mean nothing if there aren’t many Mac games for your beefy components to test themselves on. Couldn’t Greenwalt have just built a gaming PC and settled with that? That’s what I and many other people have done. The issue, Greenwalt, explained, is that “the typical PC builds I’ve seen never got me excited. They just simply weren’t my style, which is important if I’m going to spend over a thousand dollars on it and have it sit at my desk.” Instead, a love of retro gadgets led Greenwalt to a 1980s Macintosh SE listed for ***** on an online marketplace, and that spawned the idea of building a PC inside this much-loved Apple classic. The build process Josh Greenwalt As you might imagine, building a modern PC inside a 40-year-old chassis is no walk in the park. Computer parts back then were very different to the ones you’ll find today, meaning the Macintosh SE’s case is simply not made for the PC builders of today. While getting the modern components to connect together was as easy as you’d expect, wrangling them into the Macintosh SE chassis was by far the trickiest part of the build, Greenwalt explained. “The Macintosh case is not necessarily much different in volume than many mini-ITX cases,” — that is, PCs designed for small-scale mini-ITX motherboards — “but its dimensions are far from ideal for modern PC parts.” A key example of this was the graphics card. If you’ve been keeping up with PC gaming over the last few years, you’ll know that mainstream graphics cards have grown to gargantuan proportions — which is a problem when your PC case is not designed to house these behemoths. As Greenwalt put it, “the only way I could get a graphics card to fit was to mount it vertically with the ports facing the bottom. Because of this, I had to run extension cables to reroute the ports to the rear and I had to use a 400mm PCIe riser cable to plug it into the motherboard. The twisting and routing on that huge cable is ridiculous, but thankfully works.” Of course, this being a homebrewed project, the graphics card wasn’t the only fitment issue. “I also crammed [in] other accessories like a screen and speakers,” Greenwalt added, “which took up more room and added their own complications, too.” Then there were the modifications to the case itself, which required many hours of drilling, cutting, sanding and other adjustments, a process Greenwalt described as “extremely tedious.” Still, that doesn’t mean that the Joshintosh’s creator couldn’t have a little fun during the build process. If you’ve seen Greenwalt’s video showcasing the computer, you’ll remember the custom face animations he created that work like animated wallpapers on the device. Those were Greenwalt’s favorite part of the build, and “they really brought the computer to life and gave it the personality I was missing in typical PC builds. Watching it smile, nap, and even sweat makes it feel like some sort of giant Tamagotchi ****.” What’s next? Josh Greenwalt Despite this being the first old-school Macintosh that Greenwalt had seen in person — and only the second custom PC he had ever built — the Joshintosh gave him a taste for more. “I thought of the idea of doing another similar build in a CRT TV case,” he explained, “or another Macintosh but decked out with high end parts. I could further set it apart by modifying the body more by adding custom grills, a radiator, RGB lights glowing through the vents, some extra custom cyberpunk stylings, and painting it space gray. It would be like a more stylized and powerful Mk2.” But that didn’t quite hit the spot for Greenwalt. After all, it would mean “dumping more money into another PC I don’t need,” he conceded. Greenwalt deliberately chose a non-functional Macintosh SE so that he would not “ruin a surviving unit.” After all, there aren’t many of these 40-year-old computers left, and each one taken apart is another one removed from the available stock. Josh Greenwalt But what if you want to replicate the process and build your own PC inside an old Mac case? Greenwalt worries that his own work will encourage people to buy up the few remaining 1980s Macintoshes that are still working and tear out their guts to be replaced by modern components. Luckily, he has a plan: “What if I were to 3D print a Macintosh copy, but designed to already naturally mount PC components? That way, anyone can build one of these with minimal extra effort compared to any normal PC case. I could even optimize the layout to fit things in a cleaner way, too.” That’s all theoretical for now, but Greenwalt notes that his own experience with the Joshintosh and with 3D modeling gives him some solid ground to build upon. Perhaps we could see many more Joshintoshes sitting on people’s desks in the not-too-distant future. 15. New Zealand to spend NZ$2 billion on new maritime helicopters New Zealand to spend NZ$2 billion on new maritime helicopters By Lucy Craymer WELLINGTON (Reuters) -The New Zealand government said on Sunday it had set aside NZ$2 billion ($1.19 billion) in its upcoming budget to replace the Defence Force’s aging maritime helicopters, as global tensions increase. Along with money for the helicopters, the government said it would increase baseline spending by NZ$239 million for the Defence Force each year over the next four years. “It is very clear that New Zealand is not immune from the increasing tensions being felt throughout the world,” New Zealand Minister of Defence Judith Collins said in a statement. “(This) sets us on our path for defence spending to reach 2% of GDP by 2032-33,” she added. New Zealand’s Defence Force has struggled with systemic underspending over the past several decades, which amounts to just over 1% of GDP now. In April, the government said it would boost defence spending with NZ$9 billion of new funding over the next four years. “There is no economic security without national security. Global tensions are increasing rapidly, and Defence personnel need the right equipment and conditions to do their jobs,” Collins added. “As a maritime nation we are prioritising naval capability,” she said. New Zealand’s first national security review in 2023 called for more military spending and stronger ties with Indo-Pacific nations to tackle climate change and strategic competition among the West, China and Russia. New Zealand has eight SH-2G(I) Seasprite maritime helicopters. Collins said replacing these will increase the defensive and offensive capabilities and surveillance range of New Zealand’s frigates. Collins added she will have more to say about defence investments in the coming year when the government unveils its budget. New Zealand’s budget is scheduled for May 22, and will outline spending for the 12-month ******* to June 30, 2026. 18. Brazilian ex-President Jair Bolsonaro leaves hospital after recovering from bowel surgery Brazilian ex-President Jair Bolsonaro leaves hospital after recovering from bowel surgery SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazilian ex-President Jair Bolsonaro was discharged from the hospital Sunday three weeks after undergoing surgery for a bowel obstruction. The medical team at the DF Star Hospital in Brasilia, the country’s capital, said that he left intensive care on Wednesday but spent the past days recovering before being released Sunday. His health condition is stable and he started on a liquid diet, his doctors said. Bolsonaro appeared stiff and solemn as he walked outside. But his face brightened as he greeted a cheering crowd of supporters waving Brazilian flags and filming with their phones. “Hallelujah!” some shouted. “This cap goes to our President,” said Ronaldo de Barretos, a supporter outside the hospital showing off a baseball cap that bore Bolsonaro’s campaign slogan — “God, homeland, family and freedom.” Bolsonaro was admitted with severe abdominal pain to a hospital in Santa Cruz, a small city in Rio Grande do Norte, on April 11 and transferred to a hospital in the state’s capital, Natal. His family later requested his transfer to Brasilia. The right-wing leader’s intestinal obstruction is related to a stabbing injury he suffered in September 2018 as he campaigned for president. He has been in and out of hospitals since the attack and underwent multiple surgeries during his presidency, from 2019-2022. Doctors described this latest surgery last month, his sixth, as the most difficult. Before undergoing surgery, Bolsonaro had been preparing for a trip across northeast Brazil to promote his Liberal Party’s right-wing agenda, eyeing next year’s presidential election in Brazil, though he himself is barred from running. The region traditionally has been a political bastion of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro is expected to stand trial in the next few months at Brazil’s Supreme Court for allegedly attempting to stage a coup in January 2023, with riots led by his supporters in Brasilia. ___ Follow AP’s coverage of Latin America and the Caribbean at Source link #Brazilian #exPresident #Jair #Bolsonaro #leaves #hospital #recovering #bowel #surgery Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Westpac results: First half profit $3.45 billion, down 1 per cent, as bank warns of ‘key risk’ Westpac results: First half profit $3.45 billion, down 1 per cent, as bank warns of ‘key risk’ Westpac has described geopolitical uncertainty as “a key risk that’s as high as it has been for a very long time” in bringing in a $3.45 billion first half profit, a drop of one per cent. The first results under chief executive Anthony Miller, who took the top job in December last year, highlighted the bank’s push into business banking, with the segment delivering the highest profit contribution across the group. “Our focus on business and institutional is delivering results with *********** business lending up 14 per cent and institutional lending up 15 per cent over the year,” Mr Miller said in a statement. Westpac also confirmed the impact of inflation and high interest rates has materially subsided, with credit impairment charges falling and stressed exposures at just 1.36 per cent. “The resilience of customers who have navigated significant cost of living challenges over the past few years is impressive,” the bank said. “This resilience is reflected in the improvement in credit quality metrics indicating we may have passed the low point in the cycle. Mortgage delinquencies and impairment charges remain low. As the first of the banks to report following the election, Westpac offered a cautiously optimistic tone about the future. “We look forward to working with the Government and combining our efforts to address key challenges and opportunities, including providing more housing, guaranteeing access to cash with a sustainable long-term model and challenging ourselves as to how we compete as a nation going forward,” Mr Miller said. The bank will pay an interim dividend of 76 cents. More to come Source link #Westpac #results #profit #billion #cent #bank #warns #key #risk Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  22. Democrats react with quiet shock to damning John Fetterman profile Democrats react with quiet shock to damning John Fetterman profile When Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman was hospitalized for depression in 2023, many on Capitol Hill celebrated it as a moment of courage and a willingness to be open about mental health struggles. Now, a startling picture of relapse and its associated cost is being associated with him after a deeply sourced profile on Fetterman was published Friday in New York Magazine’s Intelligencer by reporter Ben Terris. Democrats on Capitol Hill have yet to comment. But the shock from the profile’s reporting was evident across social media and on political talk programs. “He needs to resign,” The Bulwark’s Jonathan Last, a supporter of the senator who wrote that he “was the first person to suggest that John Fetterman could run for president”, said on The Secret Podcast with co-host Sarah Longwell. Longwell, who agreed, called the piece’s revelations “career-ending.” In the piece, Terris quotes extensively from Fetterman’s former chief of staff, Capitol Hill veteran Adam Jentleson. He also relies on statements from current and former employees in the senator’s office who describe a man harrowed by the challenges of his office and struggling to accept the help he may still require to recover fully. Fetterman, who suffered a stroke during the final months of his 2022 run for Senate, pulled off a much-needed victory for Democrats even after a debate performance made clear that he was still suffering dire auditory processing issues and speech problems. But his recovery inspired many on the Hill and around the country. While he continues to rely to some extent on auditory transcription devices during conversations, he remains capable of speaking in press gaggles and in interviews. In private, however, things are reportedly far less encouraging. For the first time, New York Magazine reported that the senator was involved in a serious car wreck in May or June of 2024, one which injured his wife Gisele, after he ignored staffers’ concerns and got behind the wheel, then supposedly fell asleep. A video of him arguing with a commercial airplane pilot over the visibility of his seatbelt resurfaced this weekend after the profile was published. And there are other interactions between the senator and those around him outlined in New York Magazine’s profile and other sources that are turning heads, including supposedly frequent and heated personal exchanges with his wife, Gisele Fetterman, over Israel’s siege of Gaza and other issues. The Independent contacted Fetterman’s office on Sunday for comment on the profile. John Fetterman continues to struggle with recovering from struggles with depression, according to New York Magazine (AFP via Getty Images) According to Terris, Fetterman continues to struggle with the burdens of his office and in January, days after Trump’s inauguration, melted down with despondency over whether or not to support Pete Hegseth, Donald Trump’s now-embattled Secretary of Defense. Ahead of the vote, the senator, according to a staffer, raised the possibility of abandoning DC and refusing to vote at all. He also “spent part of the day locked in his office, fighting with Gisele and crying while FaceTiming with staff,” according to Terris’s reporting. “My no vote on Pete Hegseth speaks for itself. The rest is pure conjecture,” Fetterman told Terris of the above anecdote. The behavior led to Jentleson, who’d stepped down as chief of staff months earlier, to write a letter to the senator’s doctors prior to his summer 2024 car wreck, warning them of his increasingly unstable and reckless behavior. Jentleson wrote that he was seeing clear signs of Fetterman backsliding on his mental health recovery. Gisele Fetterman, for her part, told New York Magazine in a statement that Jentleson told her “scary, untrue stories about John’s health” and called his letter part of a conspiracy to damage her husband’s political reputation. That reputation may be in tatters after 2025. His votes to confirm several of Trump’s nominees, including Pam Bondi for attorney general, were the signs of ultimate betrayal for many Democrats. The extent of his enthusiasm for the Israeli military campaign in Gaza was apparent and drew a fresh wave of disgusted condemnations from progressives across Twitter and BlueSky, with his critics accusing the senator of harboring a fervor for the carnage. Fetterman denied this to New York Magazine. “John Fetterman doesn’t deserve sympathy. He’s always been racist. Those in Pittsburgh and Braddock remember him pulling a gun on a ****** jogger and holding him hostage,” wrote Tanisha Long, a Pittsburgh-based activist, on Twitter, referring to a 2013 incident. But most of the reactions across Democratic circles over the weekend were shocked at the extent of the unreported issues the senator faces, including discussions over whether he retains the cognitive faculties and stability necessary to hold office. Some thought the concerns were clearly overblown. Fetterman often engages with reporters on Capitol Hill (Getty Images) “Despicable hit piece on @JohnFetterman – I wish I was surprised anyone would publish an obvious vendetta re: a man’s medical journey. What a weird medical stalker,” wrote Kyrsten Sinema, a former Democratic senator from Arizona. “It should not require mental illness for Democratic Party politicians to escape the iron grip of groups-think — Fetterman should go back on his meds to own the haters and have a long and successful career, other Dems should ask what they can learn from what’s worked for him,” added blogger and perennial center-left gadfly, Matthew Yglesias. But many others took away from the piece an understanding that Fetterman remains clearly challenged by his continued mental health issues and the fast pace of politics in the second Trump era. “The Fetterman story is troubling—not just because of chaotic staff allegations, but because someone clearly still struggling with their mental health shouldn’t be in such a high-stakes role. The only solution is political: Fetterman should resign,” wrote Rotimi Adeoye, a Philadelphia-based Democratic operative who previously worked as a staffer for then-Senator Bob Casey. He added: “PA Dems need a robust primary.” “This email, a year ago, from Fetterman’s former chief of staff, and this entire piece from Ben Terris, makes clear that Fetterman should not be serving in the Senate,” said progressive commentator Medhi Hasan. “Every Senate Democrat should read this and be asked about it – especially Schumer.” Still others hoped that the fallout from the saga would not further hurt the senator’s family. Will Stancil, a centrist blogger and former congressional candidate, said simply: “My god the Fetterman piece. His wife needs to leave. My heart really breaks for her.” Source link #Democrats #react #quiet #shock #damning #John #Fetterman #profile Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  25. Dozens rescued from sinking yacht near Miami Beach, Coast Guard says Dozens rescued from sinking yacht near Miami Beach, Coast Guard says Thirty-two people were rescued from a sinking yacht off Miami Beach this weekend, officials say. The rescue happened around 5 p.m. Saturday near Flagler Monument Island, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. The small man-made island houses a 110 foot-tall obelisk monument that was built decades ago to honor Henry Flagler, a key developer of Florida’s east coast. Monument island is near the luxury Hibiscus, Star and Palm islands, where many famous celebrities live. Pictures shared by the Coast Guard online show more than a dozen people, some wearing life jackets, on board the 63-foot vessel. Other photos show the yacht submerged, with the ship’s nose jutting out of the water. Several other agencies, including from Miami Beach, Miami, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and some “Good Samaritan” boat operators, also helped with the rescue, according to the Coast Guard. Dispatch calls and witnesses described the ship as a “Lamborghini vessel” though the boat’s exact model has not been confirmed, according to Miami Herald news partner CBS Miami. Yachts Worldwide, a yacht-dedicated social media account, identified the boat as a $4 million Lamborghini Tecnomar in a recent video it posted of rescue crews responding to the sinking boat. The Coast Guard said no one was injured and that the ship was in the process of being recovered. The FWC is leading the investigation.
