A small plane crashes into a Los Angeles-area neighborhood, killing 2 people and a dog
A small plane crashes into a Los Angeles-area neighborhood, killing 2 people and a dog
SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — A small plane crashed into a neighborhood in Simi Valley on Saturday afternoon, killing two people and a dog aboard the aircraft and damaging two homes, authorities said.
Fire crews responded, and police cordoned off the streets, warning people to stay clear of the area. Smoke could be seen billowing from the roof of one home in the Wood Ranch section of the community, which lies nearly 50 miles (80 kilometers) northwest of Los Angeles.
Wreckage could be seen between the two homes. The Ventura County Fire Department confirmed that residents were inside at the time but said they evacuated with no reported injuries. Both homes sustained structural damage and were impacted by the fire, authorities said.
About 40 firefighters were on scene. With the flames out, they began working on salvage.
Officials initially reported one death. Later Saturday, the Simi Valley Police Department said the pilot, a passenger and a dog in the airplane died.
As of Sunday, authorities had not released any information about the occupants of the single-engine Van’s RV-10, which is a popular home-built plane sold in kit form. They also did not say what might have caused the ******.
The plane crashed into the backyard and dining room of Arman Hovakemian’s home. Hovakemian told the Los Angeles Times that he was doing yard work when he noticed the plane above, circling lower and lower in the hillside neighborhood.
He ran inside to get his wife, Armineh, and their Pomeranian dog, Koko, and they fled the property. A loud bang followed and the fuselage landed where he had been standing in the yard just moments before, he said.
“I’m numb. It hasn’t sunk in yet,” Hovakemian said Saturday as dozens of firefighters and police officers surrounded his home. “We’re fortunate we were able to get out.”
In security video recorded by a neighbor that was viewed by the Times, the plane can be heard circling the neighborhood for nearly three minutes and flying close to homes at points. In another video, the plane can be seen shooting straight up into the clouds then dropping down again.
An investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board also was on the scene Saturday. NTSB spokesperson Peter Knudson said once the wreckage of the plane is documented, it will be moved to a secure facility for further evaluation.
Investigators also will be combing through the plane’s maintenance records, weather forecasts, recordings of any air traffic control communications, witness statements, the pilot’s background and any surveillance video that might have captured the aircraft.
In January another Van’s RV-10 crashed into a warehouse in Fullerton, which is southeast of Los Angeles, while trying to make an emergency landing, killing the pilot and his teen daughter and injuring 19 people in the building. A preliminary report issued by the NTSB said that plane appeared to have had a door ajar during flight.
It will likely be weeks before the NTSB releases preliminary findings on the Simi Valley ******. A final report comes months later.

Gateshead fire death: Layton Carr’s school ‘heartbroken’
Family photo
A body believed to be that of Layton Carr, 14, was located inside the burned building
The death of a teenage boy in an industrial building fire, which led to the arrest of 14 children, has left staff and pupils at his school “heartbroken”.
A body, believed to be that of Layton Carr, 14, was found at the blaze at Fairfield industrial park in the Bill Quay area of Gateshead on Friday evening.
Police joined Hebburn Comprehensive School in paying tribute to Layton, with officers saying his family is being supported “as they begin to attempt to process their loss”.
Eleven boys and three girls, aged between 11 and 14, were arrested on suspicion of manslaughter. They have been released on bail while the investigation continues.
The fire at the 15-acre site on the southern banks River Tyne was reported shortly after 20:00 BST on Friday.
It erupted in a large building on the estate which has largely fallen into disrepair in recent years.
Mourners have left tributes near the scene of the fire
Among the tributes left by mourners at Fairfield were blue balloons in the shape of a number 14, along with flowers and messages.
One note, pinned to a bunch of flowers, read: “Thank you for brightening up our lives. You will be missed beyond words.”
Another said Layton will “always be in our hearts”.
Meanwhile, more than £13,000 has been raised via a GoFundMe appeal set up for Layton’s mother.
‘Rally together’
In his tribute to the “tragic loss of one of our pupils”, Hebburn Comprehensive headteacher David Thompson said: “Our school community is heartbroken.
“Layton was a valued and much-loved member of Year 9 and he will be greatly missed by everyone.
“We extend our sincere condolences to Layton’s family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.
“As a school, we will rally together to support one another through this tragedy.”
Fairfield industrial park in the Bill Quay area of Gateshead has seen a number of fires before
People living near the industrial site said trespassing was a “regular occurrence”.
They also said fires were common, but what happened on Friday was “out of the ordinary”.
One neighbour told the BBC it was the “biggest fire” they had ever seen.
In a joint statement, local councillors Amanda Wintcher, Ian Patterson and Paul Diston said they “share our community’s sadness about the tragedy”, adding: “Our thoughts are especially with Layton’s family and friends.”
They said they have “been in touch with residents about concerns regarding anti-social behaviour at Fairfield industrial estate for some time” and had visited the site as recently as 30 April.
Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Susan Dungworth said: “My heartfelt condolences are with the family and friends of Layton Carr at this devastating time.
“I know this will have come as a shock to the Bill Quay community and I echo officer requests for anyone with information to please get in touch with Northumbria Police.”
Detectives confirmed the children arrested on suspicion of manslaughter were released on bail at various times over the weekend.
The investigation into the fire and Layton’s death continues.

Woman Who Appeared to Hurl a Racist Slur at a Child in a Viral Video Has Raised Over $600,000 in Donations for Herself
Shiloh Hendrix, the White woman who appeared to hurl a racist slur at a ****** child in a now viral video, has raised over $600,000 in donations for herself on a fundraising page
Hendrix appeared to call a 5-year-old child the n-word at a park in Minnesota, and she now claims her family has been “attacked” and they may need to “relocate”
The fundraising page, which was initially flooded with donations from people expressing racist beliefs and sympathies, has raised over $600,000, surpassing its $50,000 goal
A White woman who appeared to hurl a racist slur at a ****** child has raised over $600,000 in donations for herself on a fundraising page.
Video of the Minnesota woman, who has since been identified as Shiloh Hendrix, began circulating on social media after she seemingly called the 5-year-old the n-word on a playground in Rochester on Monday, April 28, according to NBC News.
The man recording the video, who has since identified himself as Sharmake Omar, told the outlet that he knows the boy and his family, and the child is on the autism spectrum.
In the video, Omar can be heard confronting Hendrix, who is seemingly holding her own child, after she allegedly used the slur. Hendrix, who uses the n-word several times in this video, exclaims, “Mind your f—— own business,” and then claims that the 5-year-old child “took my son’s stuff.”
As Omar asks Hendrix if she thinks that merits calling “a little child” the n-word, she replies, “If that’s what he’s going to act like.”

After the ordeal went viral, Hendrix set up a fundraising page for herself, which she titled “Help Me Protect My Family,” on GiveSendGo. She claimed in the page’s description that she is now in a “dire situation.”
“I recently had a kid steal from my 18-month-old son’s diaper bag at a park. I called the kid out for what he was,” Hendrix wrote, then claiming that members of her family are “being attacked” and her personal information, including her address and phone number, has been leaked.
She concluded the message by asking for funds “to assist in protecting my family” and potentially “relocate.”
Hendrix’s fundraising goal was originally set for $50,000, but it has since been increased to $1 million after that initial amount was reached, per local news outlet KIMT3. The fundraiser has raised over $624,000 as of Sunday, May 4.
In an update to the page, Hendrix expressed gratitude for the “overwhelming support” that she and her family received, stating, “I’ve never felt so scared, yet reassured in my life.”
The GiveSendGo page was flooded with people expressing racist beliefs and sympathies in public notes that accompanied their donations, which prompted the crowdfunding service to mute the comments section, per The Washington Post.
In a statement to the outlet, Jacob Wells, the founder and chief executive of GiveSendGo, said the company “does not endorse or condone the personal views or actions of individual campaign organizers or their supporters, nor do we control the motivations of donors.”

Terror plot ‘foiled’ and ‘fight off Reform’
Terror plot ‘foiled’ and ‘fight off Reform’
There are several stories leading Monday’s papers. The Daily Mail focuses its coverage on raids conducted by counter-terrorism police across England, which resulted in eight arrests as part of two separate investigations. A “major attack” was being plotted, the Mail reports, citing unnamed sources – one that “could have led to an imminent threat to life”. In entertainment news, the paper continues its coverage of David Beckham’s 50th birthday with a photograph of Posh and Becks dolled up for the night, but reports a “crisis” with son Brooklyn, who snubbed the event, deepens.
The Daily Telegraph also leads with the counter-terror operations. It says the arrests, seven of which were of Iranian men, have led to renewed calls for the government to proscribe Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp. The Telegraph reports its understanding that doing so has previously been opposed “because it would prevent the *** maintaining its back-channel to Iran”. It includes comment from the Home Office refusing to speculate on such a move. The Telegraph also carries a photograph of the Beckhams.
The activity of counter-terrorism police also make the front page of the Times, however it’s the latest in Britain-EU relations that makes the top story. The Times reports that the EU has told British negotiators there can be no access to its crime and ******** migration databases as part of Britain’s Brexit reset. The paper describes it as a blow to Downing Street’s efforts to improve security ties with Europe. It cites an unnamed source as saying the government was not seeking direct access to the databases, but a “workaround” to allow Britain and EU to share key data.
The Guardian also leads with political news, focusing on comments from former transport secretary Louise Haigh, who it says has urged the prime minister to avoid a “simplistic and naive” lurch to the right in the wake of Reform ***’s success in local elections. Pictured centrally on the Guardian is a Gazan woman grieving a relative, which accompanies a story on Israel calling up reservists for a new offensive in Gaza.
The government’s reaction to Reform ***’s local election success also leads the i paper, which reports that Downing Street believes it can counter Nigel Farage’s party with plans to “tackle legal and ******** immigration”. It says Labour MPs “admit Reform *** has become a ******* threat” following the local elections.
The Financial Times is yet another paper to report on the impact of Reform’s success on government policy, this time detailing “fresh pressure” on the prime minister from Labour MPs to reverse cuts to the winter fuel allowance. It says the removal of the support payment “was a key reason voters told Labour activists they would not support the party” ahead of the local elections. The FT’s lead story, however, describes efforts from ******** exporters to avoid tariffs on their goods entering the US by shipping via third countries. It reports that ******** social media is “awash with adverts offering place-of-origin washing”.
US policy also ties into the top story of the Daily Star, which reports that president Donald Trump is “wrecking the hunt” for aliens “by cutting Nasa’s budget by £4.5bn”. It also reports on the reported drama of the Beckham family with a pun about Brooklyn being “out of the frame” alongside the image of Posh and Becks ahead of the footballer’s 50th birthday party.
The front page of the Daily Mirror takes in VE day commemorations, which begin this week, leading on a feature of a 99-year-old veteran who returns to a cemetery every year to salute his “fallen pals”, saying “the heroes are here. I was the lucky one, I survived.” It also features Brooklyn Beckham’s absence from his father’s birthday bash.
Another 99-year-old graces the front page of the Daily Express on Monday. The paper quotes a Ukrainian veteran who fought alongside Allied Forces 80 years ago who has “pleaded” for Britain not to give up on its support for his country in its war with Russia.

‘Well placed’: Big four bank’s huge Trump call
‘Well placed’: Big four bank’s huge Trump call
Westpac says *********** customers and the broader national economy are well placed to weather any potential fallout from Donald Trump’s tariff policy.
Westpac chief executive Anthony Miller said despite the widespread uncertainty from the US President’s global tariff policies, Australia was in a good place.
“Geopolitical uncertainty is a key risk that’s as high as it has been for a very long time,” he said.
“Changes to global trade policies have impacted markets and funding for the bank.
“Despite the volatility, it’s important that we look through the noise and avoid reacting to the headlines.
“Australia is well placed to handle the instability.”
For the six months through to March 31, Westpac posted a net profit of $3.3bn, down 1 per cent from the prior corresponding *******.
Overall, loans rose 5 per cent to $825bn, including housing loan growth of 5 per cent and a 14 per cent jump in business lending growth to $106bn.
Bank deposits also rose in the half, up 7 per cent to $697bn. *********** household deposits jumped 9 per cent.
Mr Trump sent shockwaves through financial markets when he announced reciprocal tariffs on just about every country in the world on April 2.
Initially, Australia faced a 10 per cent tariff on goods and while it fared better than most, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described it as “unwarranted”.
China received tariffs of up to 145 per cent, while Australia’s other trading partners, including the European Union, Vietnam, Japan and South Korea, faced tariffs ranging from 20 to 52 per cent.
These tariffs were temporarily suspended for 90 days to allow countries other than China time to negotiate with the US.
Mr Miller also flagged *********** households had so far proven resilient to cost-of-living pressures.
“Mortgage delinquencies and impairment charges remain low,” Mr Miller said.
Camera IconWestpac still thinks customers will get three rate cuts. NewsWire / Nicholas Eagar Credit: NewsWire
Westpac’s economists are expecting three more interest rate cuts by the end of this year, starting with a 25 basis point reduction in May that is likely to further take the pressure off households.
“This resilience is reflected in the improvement in credit quality metrics, indicating we may have passed the low point in the cycle,” he said.
Westpac said its net interest margin, the difference between interest earnt from lending and what the bank paid for deposits, fell one basis point from last year to 1.88 per cent.
The bank said this was due to persistent competition in lending and term deposits.

Trump says he will reopen Alcatraz to house “America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders”
Trump says he will reopen Alcatraz to house “America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders”
President Trump said Sunday he is directing his administration to reopen and expand Alcatraz, the notorious former prison on an island near San Francisco, California.
In a post on his Truth Social site, Mr. Trump wrote that, “For too long, America has been plagued by vicious, violent and repeat Criminal Offenders, the dregs of society, who will never contribute anything other than Misery and Suffering. When we were a more serious Nation, in times past, we did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals, and keep them far away from anyone they could harm. That’s the way it’s supposed to be.”

Mr. Trump said he is directing the Bureau of Prisons, the Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Homeland Security to “reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ, to house America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders.”
“The reopening of ALCATRAZ will serve as a symbol of Law, Order and JUSTICE,” he added.
A spokesperson for the Bureau of Prisons told the Associated Press in a statement that the agency “will comply with all Presidential Orders.” The spokesperson did not immediately answer the AP’s questions regarding the practicality and feasibility of reopening Alcatraz or the agency’s role in the future of the former prison given the National Park Service’s control of the island.
Mr. Trump’s social media post comes as he has been clashing with the courts as he tries to send accused gang members to a notorious prison in El Salvador, without due process. Mr. Trump has also talked about wanting to send American citizens there and to other foreign prisons.
What was Alcatraz prison?
Alcatraz prison, located on Alcatraz Island located just over a mile north of San Francisco, was a maximum-security, minimum-privilege prison opened in 1934 to deal with the “most incorrigible inmates in federal prisons,” the Bureau of Prisons says.
It was also to “show the law-abiding public that the Federal Government was serious about stopping the rampant crime of the 1920s and 1930s,” the Bureau said on its website.

Well-known criminals such as Al Capone, George “Machine-Gun” Kelly, Alvin Karpis (the first “Public Enemy No. 1) and Arthur “Doc” Barker did time in Alcatraz, according to the BOP. However, most of the prisoners were not infamous gangsters but prisoners who refused to conform to the rules and regulations of other federal institutions.
Alcatraz had a capacity of 336 prisoners, though the average population was only about 260 to 275 at any given time.
Over the 29 years that it operated, 36 men were involved in 14 separate escape attempts. Of these, 23 were caught, six were shot and killed and two drowned.
It closed on March 21, 1963, because the prison was too expensive to continue to operate, the BOP said.
After it closed, it was basically abandoned. In 1969, a group of Native American Indians occupied Alcatraz for 18 months, claiming it as Indian land.
Can people visit Alcatraz?
After its closure, the prison was often portrayed as “America’s ******’s Island” in books and movies.
In 1972, Congress created the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and the island where Alcatraz sits on was included as part of a new National Park Service site. The island opened to tourists in the fall of 1973 and has become one of the most popular National Park Service sites.
Alcatraz Island continues to operate as a tourist site to this day.

This low-profile CEO is the highest-paid in America with a $101 million paycheck that beat out Starbucks, Microsoft, and Apple chiefs
This low-profile CEO is the highest-paid in America with a $101 million paycheck that beat out Starbucks, Microsoft, and Apple chiefs
The new highest-paid CEO in America is Jim Anderson, a low-profile executive of Pennsylvania-based Coherent, which produces equipment for networks and lasers. The bulk of his salary, the only one among 100 highly paid CEOs to reach nine-figures, was made up of more than $100 million in stock awards.
In the world of highly paid CEOs, consumer technology companies and heavyweights like Tim Cook or Mark Zuckerberg may come to mind. So far this year, though, the highest paid CEO in the U.S. is the leader of a high-tech business few have likely heard of.
Jim Anderson, the head of Saxonburg, Pa.-based company Coherent—which makes equipment and products for networks and laser systems—is the new highest-paid CEO in the U.S. with a total salary of $101,497,009 for 2024, according to an early study by executive intelligence company Equilar.
Although Anderson is entitled to a base salary of $1.06 million, the CEO only joined the company in June 2024, so he received just $81,538 in cash. But that base salary, plus a signing bonus of $500,000, were just a small chunk of Anderson’s overall compensation, as he was awarded more than $100,000,000 in stock awards, according to Coherent’s 2024 proxy statement.
Of the 100 highest paid CEOs, Anderson was the only one whose compensation exceeded nine figures.
The 52-year-old Anderson beat out many other big names, including Brian Niccol of Starbucks, whose $95.8 million compensation fell $5 million short of Anderson’s. Other well-known CEOs whose compensation was valued lower than Anderson’s were Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella ($79.1 million), Apple CEO Tim Cook ($74.6 million), and Disney CEO Bob Iger ($40.6 million).
Anderson may still be replaced as the highest paid CEO after all proxy statements for 2024 are filed. Equilar’s study took a look at proxy statements through March 31 for companies with $1 billion or more in revenue, for an early snapshot of executive pay.
View this interactive chart on Fortune.com
Anderson, who was previously CEO of Lattice Semiconductor, succeeded retired Coherent CEO Chuck Mattera last year. Before Lattice, Anderson served as senior vice president and general manager of the computing and graphics business group at AMD, according to Coherent’s website. Anderson has an MBA and Master’s in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT as well as a Master’s in electrical engineering from Purdue University, and a Bachelor’s in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota.
The median CEO compensation in 2024 was $25.6 million, a 9.5% increase from last year, Equilar’s study found. CEO pay has been on the rise in recent years thanks to big stock payouts, Equilar found.

Harley Reid: Kane Cornes urges young star to leave West Coast Eagles due to lack of midfield support
Harley Reid: Kane Cornes urges young star to leave West Coast Eagles due to lack of midfield support
Harley Reid has been urged to “get out” of West Coast after he copped another heavy tag in the loss to Melbourne on Saturday night.
Reid was restricted to just 13 disposals and zero clearances by Demons tough nut Jack Viney in the 32-point defeat at Optus Stadium.
Seven commentator Kane Cornes wondered if the 20-year-old would be re-considering his future, given the attention he’s faced in his second season with a lack of support in the Eagles’ midfield.
It comes as Danielle Laidley gave Reid a four out of ten in her weekly player ratings for The West ***********.
CATCH KANE CORNES ON AGENDA SETTERS ON 7 AND 7PLUS ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY NIGHTS.
“I just wonder if this is a moment where Harley Reid thinks ‘I don’t know if I can do this anymore. This is not that enjoyable where I am getting the No.1 tagger from the opposition’,” Cornes told AFL.com.au
“And Viney absolutely mauled him. This is a 31-year-old tenacious veteran that’s gone over to Harley Reid and did not leave his side for the whole night.
“Harley Reid is having a tough year, we know that… He needs help but there’s no help coming.”
Camera IconJack Viney tagged Harley Reid out of the game. Credit: Paul Kane/Getty Images
West Coast midfield bull Elliot Yeo had been a massive on-field influence for Reid last year, playing 20 games to help the No.1 pick through his debut season.
But the 31-year-old, who is contracted until 2027, is yet to feature this season and is set for more surgery on a troublesome ankle injury, which is set to rule him out until the second half of the year.
“He just cannot get himself on the park,” Cornes said of Yeo. “Who is there at the Eagles to help Harley Reid?
“And he must look around at some of the other youngsters that are playing in successful sides, like Nick Daicos (at Collingwood) and yes he cops the tag, but he’s got so much support around him where if he has a flat night, he’s got help. He’s certainly got help physically around him.
“I just think he should get out, really, because there’s gonna be no help, no support for him coming at the Eagles.
“And the opposition would know that he’s susceptible if you tag him, like Melbourne did and credit to them and they limited his influence. It’s going to be a tough ask for him to cop that if he sticks around at the Eagles.”
Reid is signed until the end of next year on his initial three-year draft contract but could still seek a trade, similar to fellow former No.1 pick Jason Horne-Francis, who left North Melbourne for Port Adelaide after one season.
Camera IconHarley Reid is still contracted until the end of next year but could seek a trade at season’s end. Credit: Paul Kane/Getty Images
While West Coast would be desperate to keep Reid long-term, the club could consider a trade at the end of this season in a bid to maximise his value while under contract.
Cornes said the Eagles would have to consider their options, if Reid says he wants to leave.
“If that happens at the end of the year, then the Eagles have a real decision to make,” Cornes said.
“They can go ‘nup, we’re going to hold you to your contract and we’ll sort that out and hopefully we can change your mind in 12 months’ time and address it then’.
“Or you go ‘OK, well if we think he’s going to leave anyway, then we’ll get an absolute haul for him’.
“But the ball if in his court and until he says ‘I’m out’, the Eagles don’t have a decision to make.”

For people seeking to reduce fuel costs, there is also a fuel-efficient hybrid option in the Tucson. With a modern, sleek design and easy-to-travel tech, the Tucson is one of the best value SUVs in the market, making it the go-to for family and commute combinations.
Consider This: These 10 Used Cars Will Last Longer Than an Average New Vehicle
Toyota Corolla Cross
The Toyota Corolla Cross is a great budget-friendly, fuel-efficient option for those in the market looking for a crossover. It has a starting cost of about $24,035 and carries the durability and resale price Toyota is well-known for. For the money, Fix said the Corolla Cross is a “ton of value.”
With a spacious interior, smooth handling and Toyota’s standard Safety Sense suite, this is an SUV to consider. It offers a hybrid option that boosts fuel economy to the 30-plus mpg level, giving it one of the best mpg ratings of any SUV in its class.
Chevrolet Trax
At $20,500, the 2025 Chevrolet Trax is one of the cheapest SUVs on the market. Revised to be cheaper, it still has the space, modern cabin and upgraded tech to be an attractive option. Fix said the Trax gives drivers plenty of value for the money, including a standard 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
It comes in front-wheel drive only, and its fuel efficiency — 30-plus mpg — and spacious ********* make it a good city driver and a good buy on the budget. If you want a new SUV at a used car price, then it’s hard to beat the Trax.
Volkswagen Taos
The Volkswagen Taos is small, but it delivers big value with a starting price of around $24,995.
“It stands out because it has one of the biggest cabins in its class, as well as more cargo space and rear leg room than plenty of ******* SUVs,” Fix explained,
Plus, the Taos has an impressive all-wheel-drive option with better traction and capability than some rivals. Also, it’s fuel efficient and can drive up to 36 mpg on the highway. As a budget-price offering with modern styling, an intuitive infotainment system and solid ******* engineering, the Taos is a good choice for value seekers.
Nissan Kicks
For urban drivers and first-time SUV owners, the 2025 Nissan Kicks, starting at $21,830, is a budget-friendly choice. It boasts a surprisingly spacious interior, excellent fuel efficiency and standard features like automatic emergency braking.
“The Kicks has more cargo space than some larger SUVs,” Fix said, which makes it practical for its compact size.
As a front-wheel drive, it’s easy to get around in tight quarters and has low ownership expenses. If you’re looking for a low-cost, high-value crossover with excellent efficiency, the Kicks is a smart frugal buy.
Alfa Romeo Tonale
Frugality has nothing to do with luxury SUVs, but they can be frugal buys if the timing is right. While its styling is Italian, the 2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale is also packed with premium features at a more affordable price point than you’d expect from a premium car brand, starting at $36,535.
“Buyers seeking European engineering on the cheap will find the Tonale an appealing buyer,” Fix said.
It has a refined cabin and advanced technology and offers a plug-in hybrid for better efficiency — though the hybrid version is more expensive, starting at $46,035. The Tonale is a stylish and budget option for premium features at a reasonable cost.

How Russia suffered record losses in Ukraine in 2024
How Russia suffered record losses in Ukraine in 2024

Russian conscripts train for combat in the first year of the full-scale war
Last year was the deadliest for Russian forces since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine: at least 45,287 people were killed.
This is almost three times more than in the first year of the invasion and significantly exceeds the losses of 2023, when the longest and deadliest battle of the war was taking place in Bakhmut.
At the start of the war, losses happened in waves during battles for key locations, but 2024 saw a month-on-month increase in the death toll as the front line slowly edged forward, enabling us to establish that Russia lost at least 27 lives for every kilometre of Ukrainian territory captured.
The BBC Russian Service, in collaboration with independent media outlet Mediazona and a team of volunteers, has processed open source data from Russian cemeteries, military memorials and obituaries.
So far, we have identified the names of 106,745 Russian soldiers killed during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The true number is clearly much higher. Military experts estimate our number may cover between 45% and 65% of deaths, which would mean 164,223 to 237,211 people.
20 February 2024 was the deadliest day for Russian forces in 2024.
Among the casualties were Aldar Bairov, Igor Babych and Okhunjon Rustamov, who were with the 36th Motorised Rifle Brigade when four Ukrainian long-range HIMARS missiles hit a training ground near the city of Volnovakha in occupied Donetsk.
They had been ordered to line up for a medal ceremony. Sixty-five servicemen were killed, including their commander Col Musaev. Dozens more were wounded.
Bairov, 22 and from Buryatia in eastern Siberia, had studied to be a food sanitation specialist but was drafted for mandatory military service and then signed a contract to become a professional soldier.
In February 2022 he went to fight in Ukraine and was part of the battle for Borodyanka during his brigade’s advance towards Kyiv in March 2022. The town was almost completely destroyed. Ukrainian sources say Russian soldiers were involved in the execution of civilians.
Family Handout
Aldar Bairov (left), Okhunjon Rustamov (C) and Igor Babych were all killed in a strike on 20 February last year
Okhunjon Rustamov, 31 and from Chita in Siberia, had worked as a welder after serving a mandatory term in special forces. He was mobilised during a partial draft in October 2022.
Unlike Rustamov, Igor Babych, 32, had volunteered to go to war. He had worked with adults and children diagnosed with cerebral palsy, helping them with physical therapy until April 2023.
In total 201 Russian soldiers died on that day, according to our data.
A few hours after the strike on the training ground, then-Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu met Vladimir Putin to bring him news of military success from the front line.
There was no mention of the training ground attack, nor was there any word from the Ministry of Defence in its daily reports.
A relative of Okhunjon Rustamov said she had already buried three close family members over the course of the war. “In December 2022, my husband died. On 10 February 2024, my godfather. And on 20 February my half-brother. From one ******** to the next.”
In our analysis, we prioritised exact dates of death for soldiers. If that wasn’t available, we used the date of the ******** or the date the death was reported.
In the first two years of the war, 2022 and 2023, Russian losses followed a wave-like pattern: heavy fighting with high casualties alternated with periods of relative calm.
In 2023, for example, most casualties occurred between January and March, when Russian forces attempted to capture the cities of Vuhledar and Bakhmut in Donetsk Oblast.
In the first year of the full-scale invasion, according to our calculations, Russia lost at least 17,890 soldiers. This number does not include losses from Russia’s two proxy forces in occupied eastern Ukraine.
In 2023, the number rose to 37,633.
In 2024, there was no ******* showing a significant fall in casualties. Bloody battles for Avdiivka and Robotyne were followed by intensified assaults towards Pokrovsk and Toretsk.
In August 2024, Russian conscripts were killed when Ukrainian forces stormed over the border into the Kursk region. From August 6 to 13 alone, an estimated 1,226 Russian soldiers died.
However, the heaviest overall losses occurred during a slow Russian advance in the east between September and November 2024, according to leading US military analyst Michael Kofman.
“Tactics emphasised repeated attacks with dispersed assault groups, using small infantry fire teams, which increased overall casualties relative to terrain gained,” he explained.
After almost two years of intense fighting, Russian forces seized the logistical hub of Vuhledar in Donetsk on 1 October 2024.
According to estimates by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), from September to November 2024, Russian forces captured 2,356 square kilometres of Ukraine.
Even then, Ukrainian forces at the front did not collapse.
The cost of this advance was at least 11,678 Russian military deaths.
Actual losses figures are likely higher. We have only accounted for soldiers and officers whose names appeared in publicly available obituaries and whose dates of death or ******** fell within this *******.
Overall in 2024, according to ISW, Russia captured 4,168 square kilometres of land. This means that for each square kilometre captured, 27 Russian soldiers were killed, and this does not include the wounded.
How losses are changing recruitment
Russia has found ways of replenishing its depleted forces.
“Russian recruitment also increased in the second half of 2024 and exceeded Russian casualties, allowing Moscow to generate additional formations,” says Michael Kofman.
One-time payments to soldiers signing new contracts were increased in three Russian regions. Combat salaries for volunteer soldiers are five to seven times higher than the average wage in most regions.
We also class as volunteers those who signed up to avoid criminal prosecution, which was allowed by law in 2024.
Volunteers have become the fastest-growing category of casualties in our calculations, making up a quarter of those we have identified.
In 2023-2024, thousands of volunteers who signed contracts with the Ministry of Defence were sent to the front lines only 10–14 days later. Such minimal training will have dramatically reduced their chances of survival, experts say.
One Russian republic, Bashkortostan, has seen the highest numbers of casualties, with 4,836 confirmed deaths. Most were from rural areas and 38% had gone to fight with no military experience.
The one-time payment for signing a Russian army contract in Ufa is 34 times the region’s average salary of 67,575 rubles (£600).
Calculating deaths from open source data will always be incomplete.
This is because the bodies of a significant number of soldiers killed in the past months may still be on the battlefield and retrieving them presents a risk to serving soldiers.
The true death toll for Russian forces increases significantly, if you include those who fought against Ukraine as part of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics.
An assessment of obituaries and reports of searches for fighters who have lost contact suggests between 21,000 and 23,500 people may have been killed by September 2024.
That would bring the total number of fatalities to 185,000 to 260,700 military personnel.

Trump flags 100 per cent tariff on movies outside of US
Trump flags 100 per cent tariff on movies outside of US
President Donald Trump has announced a 100 per cent tariff on all movies produced outside the United States.
He said he was authorising the US Trade Representative to implement the tariff because the United States’ movie industry is dying “a very fast death” due to other countries offering incentives to attract filmmaker’s and studios.
“This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Sunday.
“It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda!”
“The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death. Other Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States,” Trump wrote.
“Hollywood, and many other areas within the USA, are being devastated.”

Not only was Buffett a successful investor, his wisdom will last forever. Here are some of his best quotes
Not only was Buffett a successful investor, his wisdom will last forever. Here are some of his best quotes
Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett announced plans Saturday to step down as chief executive by the end of the year. The legendary investor will leave a lasting legacy and a worldwide following that swears by his words of wisdom. Fortune gathered some of the best quotes from the “Oracle of Omaha.”
Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett announced to shareholders at the company’s annual meeting Saturday that he expects to step down from his role as chief executive by the end of the year.
Through Berkshire’s success, Buffett became a celebrity investor, amassing a loyal following that tracks his market moves.
But not only was Buffett, nicknamed the “Oracle of Omaha,” successful in his investing, his wit and wisdom also highlight his unprecedented career.
Fortune compiled some of his best quotes over the years:
“When we own portions of outstanding businesses with outstanding managements, our favorite holding ******* is forever,” Buffett wrote in a 1988 shareholder letter commenting on recent investments into Coca-Cola and Freddie Mac.
“It’s far better to buy a wonderful company at a fair price than a fair company at a wonderful price,” he said in a 1989 shareholder letter.
“You know, Wall Street is the only place that people ride to in a Rolls Royce to get advice from those who take the subway,” Buffett told The Los Angeles Times in 1991.
“It’s only when the tide goes out that you learn who’s been swimming naked,” he quipped in a 1992 shareholder letter.
“Beware the investment activity that produces applause; the great moves are usually treated by yawns,” he warned in his 2008 shareholder letter amid the U.S. Treasury bond bubble.
“A simple rule dictates my buying: Be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful,” Buffett wrote in a 2008 New York Times op-ed.
“Our aversion to leverage has dampened our returns over the years. But Charlie [Munger] and I sleep well. Both of us believe it is insane to risk what you have and need in order to obtain what you don’t need,” he cautioned in his 2017 shareholder letter.
“Despite our citizens’ penchant — almost enthusiasm — for self-criticism and self-doubt, I have yet to see a time when it made sense to make a long-term bet against America,” Buffett said in his 2022 shareholder letter.

Trump says he will reopen Alcatraz prison
Trump says he will reopen Alcatraz prison
NEW YORK (AP) — President Donald Trump says he is directing his government to reopen and expand Alcatraz, the notorious former prison on a California island.
In a message on his Truth Social site Sunday evening, Trump wrote that, “For too long, America has been plagued by vicious, violent, and repeat Criminal Offenders, the dregs of society, who will never contribute anything other than Misery and Suffering. When we were a more serious Nation, in times past, we did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals, and keep them far away from anyone they could harm. That’s the way it’s supposed to be.”
“That is why, today, I am directing the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ, to house America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders,” he wrote, adding: “The reopening of ALCATRAZ will serve as a symbol of Law, Order, and JUSTICE.”
The prison was closed in 1963, and Alcatraz Island is currently operated as a tourist site.
The order comes as Trump has been clashing with the courts as he tries to send accused gang members to a notorious prison in El Salvador, without due process. Trump has also talked about wanting to send American citizens there and to other foreign prisons.

*********** markets were set to rally Monday following Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s reelection for a second term, while most Asian markets were closed for a holiday.
He is the country’s first prime minister to clinch a second consecutive term in 21 years – a move that indicates Australians’ desire for policy continuity amid the current uncertain macroeconomic outlook.
Futures tied to the S&P/ASX 200 stood at 8,280, pointing to stronger open than the benchmark’s Friday close of 8,238, when it hit its highest level since February 27.
Japanese, South Korean, Hong Kong and ******** markets were closed for public holidays.
U.S. futures edged down, reversing course from strong wins in Wall Street last week.
The broad-based S&P 500 ended last Friday’s session 1.47% higher at 5,686.67. This marked its ninth consecutive day of gains and is its longest winning run since November 2004. The benchmark also managed to recover all losses incurred since April 2, when U.S. President Donald Trump announced retaliatory tariffs.
Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 564.47 points, or 1.39%, to end at 41,317.43, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.51% to 17,977.73.
