  3. ‘Bombshell’ OPEC+ output hike hits oil price ‘Bombshell’ OPEC+ output hike hits oil price Eight OPEC+ member countries on Saturday announced a sharp increase in oil production (JOE KLAMAR) Oil prices slumped on Monday after eight OPEC+ members announced a sharp increase in production, while Asian stocks treaded water in thin trade with major markets closed. The output increase of 411,000 barrels a day announced by Saudi Arabia, Russia and six other members of the oil cartel on Saturday added to concerns about over-supply. The price of crude has already been sliding because of fears of a global economic slowdown on the back of US President Donald Trump’s tariff onslaught. “OPEC+ has just thrown a bombshell to the oil market,” Jorge Leon, analyst with Rystad Energy, told AFP. “(Saturday’s) decision is a definitive message that the Saudi-led group is changing strategy and pursuing market share after years of cutting production,” he added. On equity markets, Tokyo was closed for a holiday along with Hong Kong and mainland China. Taiwan edged lower while the Jakarta Composite Index gained. The *********** dollar gained against the US dollar after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s election victory on Saturday, while the S&P/ASX 200 fell almost one percent. Wall Street stocks concluded a strong week on a winning note Friday, notching solid gains on good US jobs data and improving sentiment about US-China trade talks. In Europe, Paris and Frankfurt rose over two percent as markets brushed off official data showing eurozone inflation remained unchanged at slightly above the European Central Bank’s two-percent target. London also gained ground, with mining and commodity stocks — sensitive to ******** demand — performing particularly well amid optimism for the potential Beijing-Washington talks, according to analysts. Stephen Innes at SPI Asset Management said that the “market (is) catching its breath before the next directional catalyst drops”. 5. Berlin still bears scars 80 years after pivotal battle that sealed the defeat of Nazi Germany Berlin still bears scars 80 years after pivotal battle that sealed the defeat of Nazi Germany BERLIN (AP) — Central Berlin was in ruins after the Red Army completed the Allied victory over Nazi Germany in an intense fight for the capital in May 1945. After decades of division and its revival as the capital of a reunited, democratic Germany, the city is now transformed, blending painstakingly restored buildings with modern architecture. But the scars of the past remain visible in many places: facades riddled with holes from bullets and shrapnel, or gaps in rows of houses sometimes plugged by new buildings. An Associated Press story from May 9, 1945, painted a stark picture. It read: “This town is a city of the dead. As a metropolis it has simply ceased to exist. Every house within miles of the center seems to have had its own bomb.” Berlin, the epicenter of Adolf Hitler’s power, was the ultimate prize as the Allies closed in from east and west on the disintegrating ******* defenses in the final stage of World War II. “We all had a little case next to the bed, even the children,” recalled Eva-Maria Kolb, now 89, of the constant aerial bombing in the last six months of the war. “When there was an air raid warning you had to pull something on quickly and then go down to the basement.” The final Battle of Berlin in late April and early May 1945 reduced much of what was left of the city to rubble. The Soviet military attacked from several directions with an enormous concentration of troops, who faced a struggle to cross rivers and canals and an intensifying street fight as they moved deeper and deeper into the city. On April 25, Berlin was encircled. Hitler killed himself in his bunker on April 30; and on May 2, the commander of ******* military forces in Berlin, Gen. Helmuth Weidling, capitulated to Soviet forces. “Berlin was a heap of rubble — because of these last 10 days, almost everything in the center was ruined,” said Jörg Morré, the director of the Museum Berlin-Karlshorst, located in the building where Germany’s final surrender was signed. But “the infrastructure could be repaired relatively quickly — the sewerage system wasn’t so badly damaged. They managed to get the water supply and pipes going again. A lot of old Berliners are still familiar with hand pumps … electricity came, so that the trams starting running again, and the commuter trains.” Kolb said: “It was, of course, a great relief in ‘45 that the war was over and Hitler was no longer alive … everyone who wasn’t a Nazi was very, very grateful that the war was over.” She recalled that parts of the city were rubble, but she went to a school in the Tempelhof district, south of the center, “that was only half-ruined. It no longer had a roof and the second or third floor was missing — but we had lessons. Only when it rained were lessons canceled.” ‘This marked the end’ Post-war Berlin was divided into sectors controlled by the wartime allies. That hardened into a Cold War division that saw two separate ******* states founded in 1949 and ultimately led to the building in 1961 of the Berlin Wall, which fell 28 years later as ********** rule collapsed in East Germany. Germany was reunited in 1990 and the national government moved to Berlin in 1999. Parliament now meets in the restored Reichstag, where the raising of the Soviet Union’s red flag in 1945 was emblematic of the victory over Nazi Germany. Graffiti left by Soviet troops at the Reichstag has been preserved at several places in the building. The military surrender of Berlin on May 2, 1945, wasn’t quite the end of the war. Hitler’s successor, Grand Adm. Karl Dönitz, tried to fight on but was quickly forced to negotiate Germany’s surrender. Germany’s unconditional capitulation was signed at Allied headquarters in Reims, France, on May 7 and came into effect the following day. But the Soviet Union had only a liaison officer at the ceremony and fighting against the Red Army continued in the east, so a second ceremony was agreed at Soviet headquarters in Berlin on May 8, Morré said. As a result, the West and Russia mark the end of the war in Europe on May 8 and May 9, respectively. “In this room, World War II ended in Europe,” he said, in the preserved hall where the capitulation was signed in Berlin. “This marked the end.” ___ Geir Moulson in Berlin contributed to this report. 8. Woman Calls Police on ‘Homeless’ Man Walking His Newborn. Turns Out It’s Her Neighbor (Exclusive) Woman Calls Police on ‘Homeless’ Man Walking His Newborn. Turns Out It’s Her Neighbor (Exclusive) Chapman Hamborg is an artist from Southern California With a newborn in the family, he often takes his daughter on walks around the neighborhood and admits to sometimes looking “disheveled” One morning, after his routine walk, a neighbor reported seeing a homeless man and a baby, resulting in the police showing up at his door Chapman Hamborg is an artist and father of four, living and working in Huntington Beach, Calif. The 33-year-old is often found painting and sculpting in his backyard studio or surfing the waves near his home. His favorite pastime, however, is spending quality time with the family. Since welcoming a newborn only a month ago, Hamborg’s routine involves daily walks around the neighborhood in an attempt to soothe his daughter and give his wife some time to relax. However, he never expected to have the police called on him for looking “homeless.” Hamborg and his family live in a quiet beachside neighborhood, on a street located between a middle and high school, leading to a good amount of foot traffic. One early morning, the artist was walking his newborn daughter, as he often does, on a route that passes by the street behind their house. “She’s in her fussy newborn stage so I take her on lots of walks and I wear her in the baby carrier,” Hamborg tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I go out often in the middle of the night, like all times of the day and multiple times a day. It’s kind of like a routine to give my wife some rest.” However, their routine was interrupted as Hamborg and his daughter were returning from their second walk of the morning on April 22, 2025. By then, the family was up, the kids were playing outside, and he started helping his wife, Hannah, clean up inside. It was his oldest son who pointed out the police car parked right in front of their house. At first, Hamborg wondered if someone had called the cops on his family, though he wasn’t sure why. He and the officer met halfway down his lawn and exchanged confused looks. Arika Mckeever Chapman Hamborg reveals he cuts his own hair and never goes to a barber “He was very friendly and kind,” Hamborg explains. “So I wasn’t on guard…I already kind of had a hint that there must have been some sort of miscommunication.” The officer revealed that someone had reported a homeless person with a baby and found their address after following Hamborg home. Hamborg, with his daughter still on his chest, was shocked and a bit embarrassed. The officer explained that a neighbor was concerned about what they saw and asked him to provide a form of identification. He immediately went inside to look for his wallet and to tell his wife what was happening. Hannah was in disbelief and decided to come outside for support. “I was like shaking and — you can hear it in my voice in the video — my voice is just like all over the place,” he recalls. “I’m in my own home. I’m in my own neighborhood with my own baby and it’s just wild that, that could happen… it’s kind of crazy.” Trisha Nelson Chapman Hamborg with his family on their front yard Nevertheless, after providing his ID, Hamborg, his wife and the officer are seen laughing off the situation in a viral video. “I think it helped that he was just really friendly and really kind,” Hamborg admits. “If it had been someone that maybe was more suspicious and, you know, was a bit more aggressive and intense, for sure that would have been a different interaction.” Hamborg’s dad was a firefighter, so growing up, he was taught to always be polite and cooperative with police. But after sharing the experience online, some people commented that if he were ******, the situation might have played out differently. Others pointed out the privilege in being able to laugh it off, making Hamborg realize how quickly people can be stereotyped. “It’s interesting to reflect on all that,” he says. “There’s so much of that in our culture right now.” During his morning walk, Hamborg was wearing his Patagonia jacket, but looked quite unkempt with his hair pulled back in a loose bun, a hole in his slipper and clothes stained with paint. Oftentimes, he even walks around barefoot and admits he has never thought anything of it before. ****** Branlund Chapman Hamborg working barefoot in his studio “I’m an artist and I have disheveled clothes and stuff. I’m confident in who I am and my style and, you know, I’ve never been to a barber. I cut my own hair,” he explains. “I have no problem with it. Like I choose to dress the way I do for a reason and I’m not going to change the way I look because of it.” Although his children agreed to their father looking “homeless,” others were outraged over the whole situation. “It’s mostly weird cause she assumed you were homeless and then watched you walk into a home and still called the police,” one person commented. Another wrote: “Parenthood literally has us all looking unhoused and unkempt.” Following the incident, Hamborg never received an apology from the neighbor who called the police. Though he is unsure of her identity, he noticed her sitting in her car across from his house while he was speaking to the officer. “So I’ve kind of seen her car…I recognize the car, so I can figure out which house it is. And I’ve gone on several walks back and forth since then, kind of hoping to see her and just be like, ‘Hey, I’m your neighbor and I’m not homeless,’ ” he shares. “Not to be mad or guilt trip or anything. Because like my wife even said, ‘Hey, at least we know our neighbors are looking out for our kids.’ ” Trisha Nelson Chapman Hamborg is an artist with his own institute called the Hamborg Academy of Art Although Hamborg admits an apology from his neighbor would have been nice, he is choosing to have a positive outlook on the situation and is thinking of sending the woman a letter, thanking her for being vigilant. “I would like to use it as an opportunity to get to know my neighbor and to be thankful that she’s looking out for our kids or the neighborhood,” Hamborg says. ”Rather than, you know, turning it into a divisive thing.” Read the original article on People Source link #Woman #Calls #Police #Homeless #Man #Walking #Newborn #Turns #Neighbor #Exclusive Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  13. Convicted Russian spies seen in Parliament in 2016 Convicted Russian spies seen in Parliament in 2016 Tom Beal, Chris Bell and Daniel De Simone BBC News Investigations Metropolitan Police Three Bulgarians convicted in March of spying for Russia previously attended an event in the Palace of Westminster, a BBC News investigation has found. Orlin Roussev, Biser Dzhambazov and Katrin Ivanova were present at an event to debate Brexit in a committee room in May 2016. Photographs posted on social media and unearthed by the BBC show the spies with representatives of European political parties. A parliamentary spokesperson said Parliament was a public building but that security processes were “robust”. Facebook Orlin Roussev, front right, and Biser Dzhambazov, seated next to him Facebook Katrin Ivanova seen at the same event in Parliament Two people who knew Orlin Roussev during the relevant ******* confirmed he was the man pictured at the Commons event. The BBC visually reviewed the photographs to confirm Dzhambazov’s attendance. Ivanova, also visible in photographs, appears on a list of people who indicated they would attend. The use of the room for the event was sponsored by former West Ham MP Lyn Brown, now Baroness Brown of Silvertown. She was nominated for a life peerage by the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. Baroness Brown of Silvertown told the BBC she had “absolutely no memory” of the event and did not believe she had “met or spoken to the three individuals”. There is no suggestion of wrongdoing on the part of either the event’s organisers or attendees. Katrin Ivanova was convicted of offences alongside Tihomir Ivanchev and Vanya Gaberova between August 2020 and February 2023, following a four-month trial at the Old Bailey in London. Roussev, the *** spy cell’s leader, and Dzhambazov, his primary lieutenant, had already pleaded guilty, along with another man, Ivan Stoyanov. Together, they conducted surveillance operations across Europe targeting enemies of Vladimir Putin’s regime, including investigative journalists Christo Grozev and Roman Dobrokhotov, as well as Russian dissidents and political figures. The six, all based in the ***, will be sentenced this week. A previous BBC investigation named and tracked down two women who were part of the group outside of the ***, who remain free. PA Media An Interpol wanted poster for Jan Marsalek The cell’s activities were directed from Russia by Jan Marsalek, an Austrian former finance executive reported to be hiding in Moscow having fled fraud charges in Germany following the collapse of payments processing company Wirecard. Marsalek is an asset of Russian intelligence services. A cache of tens of thousands of Telegram messages between Marsalek and Roussev recovered by *** police indicated close coordination with the Austrian’s “friends in Russia”. Email exchanges seen by the BBC show Roussev was already in contact with Marsalek by the time of the May 2016 event in Parliament. Roussev worked as the chief technology officer for a financial services firm after moving to the *** in 2009. The role also required him to spend time in Russia. But the BBC has been told that he was sacked in 2012 after he was caught siphoning off significant amounts of money – $130k (£98k) – over the course of six months. After being sacked, Roussev posed as a legitimate businessman at industry events. The event in Parliament was organised and attended by representatives of European political parties, including the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), which Dzhambazov and Ivanova joined in early 2016. Facebook Former Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev (left) hands Biser Dzhambazov and Katrin Ivanova BSP membership cards During the trial, messages between Dzhambazov and Roussev, in which the former boasted of political connections in the “upper echelon” of the BSP, were read into evidence. Since 2015, Dzhambazov had been actively involved in the administration of Bulgarian elections in the ***, via the Embassy. Ivanova and Gaberova also worked in this capacity at various junctures. Photographs of the event in Parliament, published on Facebook, show Roussev, Dzhambazov and Ivanova seated behind Georgi Pirinski, a US-born former ********** who had served as chair of the Bulgarian National Assembly. At the time of the meeting he was a Member of the European Parliament for the BSP, which replaced the Bulgarian ********** Party in 1990. Other attendees pictured include Roberto Sperenza, who served as Italy’s Minister of Health under Prime Minister Guiseppe Conte between 2019 and 2022, representatives of the Social Democratic Party of Romania and a Labour Party councillor. An entry on the BSP website published prior to the event claimed it would be attended by “representatives of all parliamentary parties in the *** parliament”. It is not clear if that transpired. Facebook The spies sat behind former Bulgarian politician Georgi Pirinski Sir Iain Duncan-Smith MP, a former leader of the Conservative Party, said Parliament should investigate whether the group had accessed the building on any further occasions. “Parliament should look into what was going on,” he said. “It’s so easy to get in and out… Inside that building, they get a chance to bump into, meet, see and even go into offices if we’re not careful.” A parliamentary spokesperson said: “Parliament is a public building, and we facilitate the visits of thousands of people to the estate each week. “We have robust security processes in place, with the safety and security of all those who work in and visit Parliament our top priority. “Members in both houses can sponsor events… in accordance with their own judgment,” the spokesperson added. Concerns have previously been raised about the security of Parliament in the face of alleged espionage activities by state actors. In 2024, a former Parliamentary researcher, Christopher Cash, 30, denied spying for China. He will stand trial alongside Christopher Berry, 33, in October. 16. Diddy sex trafficking trial starts with jury selection Diddy sex trafficking trial starts with jury selection Sean “Diddy” Combs, the hip-hop entrepreneur whose career has been plagued by allegations of violence, will appear in a New York courthouse to face charges he used his business empire to ********* abuse women. Jury selection is scheduled to begin on Monday and potentially take several days. Opening statements by the lawyers and the start of testimony is expected next week. The 17-page indictment against Combs reads like a charging document filed against a ****** leader or the head of a drug gang, accusing him of engaging in sex trafficking and presiding over a racketeering conspiracy. The indictment says that with the help of people in his entourage and employees from his network of businesses, Combs engaged in a two-decade pattern of abusive behaviour against women and others. Women were manipulated into participating in drug-fuelled ******* performances with male sex workers that Combs called “Freak Offs”, prosecutors say. To keep women in line, prosecutors say Combs used a mix of influence and violence, offering to boost their entertainment careers if they did what he asked — or cut them off if they didn’t. And when he wasn’t getting what he wanted, the indictment says Combs and his associates resorted to violent acts including beatings, kidnapping and arson. Once, the indictment alleges, he even dangled someone from a balcony. Combs and his lawyers say he is innocent. Any group sex was consensual, they say. There was no effort to coerce people into things they didn’t want to do, and nothing that happened amounted to a criminal racket, they said. The trial is expected to take at least eight weeks. Combs, 55, has acknowledged one episode of violence that is likely to be featured in the trial. In 2016, a security camera recorded him beating up his former girlfriend, the R&B singer Cassie, in the hallway of a Los Angeles hotel. Cassie filed a lawsuit in late 2023 saying Combs had subjected her to years of abuse, including beatings and *****. Combs’ lawyer Marc Agnifilo has said Combs was “not a perfect person” and that there had been drug use and toxic relationships, but said that all ******* activity between Combs, Cassie and other people was consensual. If convicted, he faces the possibility of decades in prison. Source link #Diddy #sex #trafficking #trial #starts #jury #selection Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  17. Samsung fights $520 million India tax demand, points to Reliance practice Samsung fights $520 million India tax demand, points to Reliance practice By Aditya Kalra and Arpan Chaturvedi NEW DELHI (Reuters) -Samsung has asked an Indian tribunal to quash a $520 million tax demand for allegedly misclassifying imports of networking gear, arguing officials were aware of the practice as India’s Reliance imported the same component in a similar manner for years, documents show. Samsung becomes the second major foreign company in recent months to challenge an Indian tax demand. Volkswagen has sued Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government in court for a record demand of $1.4 billion for misclassifying its component imports. In the Samsung case, tax authorities in January asked Samsung to pay $520 million for evading the 10-20% tariffs by misclassifying imports of a key mobile tower equipment, which it then sold to billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s telecom giant, Reliance Jio, from 2018 to 2021. In its 281-page challenge at the Customs Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal in Mumbai, Samsung criticises Indian authorities for being “fully aware” of the business model as Reliance had a “long-established practice” of importing the same equipment without any tariff payments for three years until 2017. Samsung’s India unit says it discovered during an Indian tax investigation that Reliance had been warned about the practice way back in 2017, but Reliance did not inform the South Korean company about it and tax officials never questioned Samsung. “The classification adopted by the appellant (Samsung) was known to the authorities, however the same was never questioned … Department was fully aware,” Samsung says in its April 17 filing, which is not public but was seen by Reuters. “Reliance Jio officials did not inform” Samsung about the tax warning of 2017, it adds. Samsung and India’s tax authority did not respond to Reuters queries. Further details of Reliance’s 2017 warning from tax authorities are not public and were not disclosed in the Samsung filing. Reliance didn’t respond to Reuters queries. Other than $520 million demand Samsung faces, Indian authorities have also imposed an $81 million fine on seven of its employees, taking the total tax demand to $601 million. It’s not clear if Samsung employees are separately challenging the fines. The tax demand represents a substantial chunk of last year’s net profit of $955 million for Samsung in India, where it is one of the largest players in the consumer electronics and smartphones market. In defending its tariff declarations, Samsung also argues in its filing that the tax authority passed the order in January “in a hurry” and it was not provided “a fair opportunity” to present its case, despite the “huge stakes” involved. Story Continues The Samsung case concerns imports of a component called “Remote Radio Head”, a radio-frequency circuit enclosed in a small outdoor module, that tax officials say is “one of the most important” parts of 4G telecoms systems. The case against Samsung alleges it misclassified the component’s imports worth $784 million from Korea and Vietnam between 2018 to 2021, to maximise profits. Investigators found that Samsung “transgressed all business ethics and industry practices or standards in order to achieve their sole motive of maximising their profit by defrauding the government exchequer,” the January order stated. 20. 5 Money Habits That Hurt Your Retirement, According to Experts 5 Money Habits That Hurt Your Retirement, According to Experts Planning for retirement isn’t just about how much money you make. It’s about how you manage it over the years. Certain financial habits can quietly sabotage your long-term goals even if you earn a great salary. Read More: The Money You Need To Save Monthly To Retire Comfortably in Every State Find Out: The New Retirement Problem Boomers Are Facing We asked financial experts to share the most common mistakes they see people make that can delay or even derail retirement plans. From lifestyle upgrades to poor car-buying decisions, these habits may be more familiar than you think. A car is often one of the biggest purchases we make, but how we buy it can impact our financial future more than we realize. “If you choose to always lease a car, you will always have a car payment,” said Melanie Musson, a finance expert with Clearsurance.com. “You’ll never reach a point where your car is paid off and you can take what you were making in a payment and put it toward investing.” Musson broke down a hypothetical scenario where if you leased a $60,000, you may enjoy the ride but after three years, you’d walk away with nothing. On the other hand, if you buy a $30,000 used car with $600 monthly payments, you’ll eventually own the vehicle outright, and you can use the money you were paying toward another expense or savings goal. Advertisement: High Yield Savings Offers Powered by Money.com – Yahoo may earn commission from the links above. “Pay it off in five years and redirect that $600 into investments instead,” said Musson. “Over 20 years, and with an average 8% return rate, that decision alone could grow into $100,000 to $300,000, depending on market performance.” See More: Frugal Retirees: Steer Clear of These 13 Ultra-Expensive Arizona Cities Getting a raise is exciting, but it can also be dangerous if it fuels unchecked lifestyle upgrades. “Lifestyle creep is sneaky because it doesn’t feel like overspending, it feels like celebrating success,” said Melissa Cox, CFP and owner of Future-Focused Wealth. “A raise turns into a nicer car, a ******* house, or just more DoorDash orders… but none of it gets funneled toward the future,” she added. It’s easy to fall into the trap of spending every new dollar you earn. But without increasing your savings rate, your expenses can outpace your retirement contributions. That gap only gets harder to close over time. Your home can be one of your most valuable assets. Or, it can be a financial setback depending on how you handle it near retirement. “One thing that can hurt your retirement is not making the best real estate moves,” said Adam Hamilton, CEO of REI Hub. Story Continues “Maybe you’re retiring soon, but decide to buy a more expensive home and take on a new mortgage just as you exit the workforce. Or maybe you downsize, but don’t time it well and end up with a much higher mortgage rate than what you previously had.” Hamilton also points out missed income opportunities. “If you already own a vacation home, consider renting it out during the months you’re not using it. It could generate a lot of income that supports your retirement lifestyle.” Whether to upgrade, downsize, or rent out housing decisions should be part of your long-term financial plan. Time is one of your most powerful tools when it comes to saving for retirement. But too many people wait until later in life to get serious. “The biggest mistake I see is people not starting early,” said Jason Butler, personal finance blogger at My Money Chronicles. “I know what it’s like to feel like you’re drowning in debt. Student loans were a huge burden for me. But even while I was paying those down, I made it a point to start saving something, even if it was just $50 a month.” Butler’s strategy involved combining a consistent debt repayment plan with automated contributions to retirement savings accounts. He also made sure to avoid using credit too much so as not to add even more payments that could drain his financial ability to save. “I used windfalls like tax refunds or side hustle income to pay down debt faster and still made room in my budget for retirement investing,” he said. “The key is to start where you are and stay consistent.” If you’re feeling behind, it’s not too late to start. But the longer you wait, the more aggressive you’ll need to be with saving and investing. Even if you do everything right during your working years, such as saving consistently, investing wisely, and avoiding debt, retirement requires just as much strategy. “Too many retirees treat their nest egg like it’s never going to run out,” said Cox. “Without a withdrawal strategy, people end up pulling too much too soon or ignoring tax implications.” A proper withdrawal plan can help you avoid unexpected tax bills, Medicare premium hikes, or even running out of money. Working with a financial advisor or using a “bucket strategy” — dividing retirement funds into short-term, mid-term, and long-term buckets — can provide peace of mind. Small choices today, like the car you drive, the house you buy, or how you handle a raise, can ripple through the decades into your retirement years. But with awareness and smart planning, you can sidestep these costly habits and create a retirement that’s both possible and enjoyable for you. 21. Motorola Edge 70 Render Surfaces with Minimal Design Changes; Could Get Dimensity 7000 Series Chip Motorola Edge 70 Render Surfaces with Minimal Design Changes; Could Get Dimensity 7000 Series Chip Motorola Edge 60 was launched globally just some 10 days ago, and the rumour mill is already churning out details about its successor. As per a report, an early render of the Motorola Edge 70 has surfaced, showing the design changes which may arrive with the purported smartphone, although there aren’t too many. The phone appears to have similar design elements as the current Edge 60 model, including the vegan leather back and the triple rear camera unit. While details still remain under wraps, the Edge 70 could get a Dimensity 7000 series processor under the hood. Motorola Edge 70 Render Leak Android Headlines shared an exclusive render of the purported Motorola Edge 70 in a report. The phone appears to have a design identical to the Edge 60, including curved edges — it may not, however, be a quad curved device. The phone is reported to have a rear triple camera unit along with an LED flash; the company could use similar sensors as the current model. Photo Credit: Android Headlines Another notable retention from the current model is said to be the material used for the phone’s back panel. In line with previous entries in the Motorola Edge lineup, the purported Edge 70 may retain the vegan leather back. The phone is shown in a green colourway. The handset is slated to be a near flagship-level offering from Motorola, although the top-end spot could be reserved for the purported Motorola Edge 70 Pro. As such, the Edge 70 is speculated to be powered by a chipset from the MediaTek Dimensity 7000 family, most likely the Dimensity 7400. And with the ever-increasing number of artificial intelligence (AI) features announced by the Lenovo-owned brand for its phones, the purported handset could get a RAM upgrade, as well, with 12GB of RAM becoming standard across all storage variants. Although official details are yet to surface, the report speculates that the purported Edge 70 could be launched in September, with September 24 being the most likely date of its introduction — a little over five months post the Edge 60 series’ launch. 24. Microsoft introduces terrifying new AI tool, angers users Microsoft introduces terrifying new AI tool, angers users The world of artificial intelligence (AI) just took a shocking turn, one that seems to be terrifying consumers. For many people, the AI revolution is reshaping entire industries and markets in a frightening way. Companies are creating the type of technology that science fiction writers have long predicted could overpower humanity. Don’t miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet’s free daily newsletter Others are more worried about their jobs being rendered obsolete, as AI systems demonstrate clear abilities to perform human tasks with extreme precision. Companies have quickly moved to eliminate positions that center around tasks such as data entry and customer service. One company that is helping usher in the next phase of AI is Microsoft (MSFT) . But the tech leader recently released a controversial feature sparking strong concern among its user base, which seems extremely worried about the consequences. Microsoft and CEO Satya Nadella have made a controversial decision to push forward with a new AI tool that has consumers worried. Image source: Ben Kriemann/Getty Images Over the past few years, Microsoft has worked hard to remain competitive in the AI market as startups such as OpenAI and Anthropic have made significant advances. Its Copilot AI chatbot remains a popular choice among users, although it has not caught up with ChatGPT. Recently, however, Microsoft has made multiple AI-related announcements that many consumers likely find frightening. Last week, it released a detailed report describing a future in which most teams of office workers are composed of AI agents managed by humans. Related: Microsoft shares terrifying new use for AI A few days ago, though, the company announced plans to bring back an AI tool that generated a lot of controversy the last time they tried to roll it out. Originally introduced in May 2024, Recall is a Windows 11 feature that can take a screenshot of everything a user does before indexing and storing it in a matter of seconds. Concerns about security and privacy violations quickly rose, prompting the company to push back the launch, originally intended for June 2024. But a year later, Microsoft is pushing forward with its plans to bring Recall to its Copilot+ PCs. In a recent statement, Microsoft attempted to frame Recall as a powerful new feature that can save users time by allowing them to search more efficiently. “You are always in control of what snapshots are saved and can pause saving snapshots at any time,” it promises users. However, this isn’t necessarily going to appease people’s anxiety. “Even if User A never opts in to Recall, they have no control over the setting on the machines of Users B through Z,” Ars Technica reports. “That means anything User A sends them will be screenshotted, processed with optical character recognition and Copilot AI, and then stored in an indexed database on the other users’ devices.” Story Continues The outlet adds that this could allow the AI tool to collect any sensitive material from the user in question, which could include passwords, medical data, and messages sent through encrypted services. More Tech Stocks News: Cyber expert Kevin Beaumont recently confirmed that Recall can capture messages sent through encrypted apps such as WhatsApp and Signal, even after they have been deleted. “I would recommend that if you’re talking to somebody about something sensitive who is using a Windows PC, that in the future you check if they have Recall enabled first,” he advises. Beaumont’s point highlights an important underlying truth regarding Recall. It isn’t just PC users who may be at risk from this technology, it is anyone who communicates with them whose private messages may be stored. Related: Analysts reset Microsoft stock target amid post-earnings rally Encrypted messaging platforms such as WhatsApp and Signal are popular because they offer users more privacy and allow them to exchange sensitive information and materials. Now, if Microsoft moves forward with introducing Recall, these popular features could be compromised. Many social media users are voicing their displeasure at Microsoft’s decision, making it clear they do not approve. “If I were to have a Windows PC, this would instantly void that device as trash material for me,” one Reddit user states. “Why would anyone let this literal spyware run on their device is beyond me.” Another adds that they can’t see who might benefit from this, aside from “data brokers and cyber criminals,” who could certainly reap the benefits if they find a way to hack into the system. Other Reddit users have professed plans to switch over to using an Apple computer, citing the Recall news as the reason why.
