  1. Major bank sounds alarm on global trade war impact Major bank sounds alarm on global trade war impact Australia’s largest business bank has raised the alarm about the impact of global trade tensions on the outlook for the nation, after reporting a slight rise in half-year earnings. National Australia Bank posted cash earnings of $3.6 billion for the half-year ended March, up one per cent from the same ******* in 2024. “We are optimistic about the underlying growth outlook for the *********** and New Zealand economies,” CEO Andrew Irvine said on Wednesday. “However, escalating global trade tensions are a key source of uncertainty.” The trade issue is being driven by the United States, after President Donald Trump imposed large tariffs on goods imports from countries around the world, including Australia, sparking threats of retaliation. Mr Irvine said NAB, which is one of Australia’s big four banks, was “managing our business well” despite continuing challenging market operations. “We have maintained strong balance sheet settings,” he said. “Our bank is in good shape.” NAB declared an interim dividend of 85 cents per share, up one cent on last year’s payout. The bank’s result was slightly better than Westpac’s, which on Monday, posted first-half earnings of $3.3 billion, down one per cent, and an interim dividend of 76 cents. 2. Trump claimed the US doesn’t do ‘much business with Canada.’ Canada is the world’s top buyer of US exports Trump claimed the US doesn’t do ‘much business with Canada.’ Canada is the world’s top buyer of US exports During his Tuesday meeting with ********* Prime Minister Mark Carney, President Donald Trump falsely minimized the importance of the US trade relationship with Canada. “We don’t do much business with Canada from our standpoint. They do a lot of business with us. We’re at like 4%,” Trump said. That “4%” figure is wrong. Official US data shows that Canada bought about 17% of US goods exports in February and March, the last month for which data is available – more than any other country. Canada bought about 16% of US goods exports in January, second only to Mexico. Trump’s “we don’t do much business with Canada from our standpoint” claim is too subjective to render a definitive fact-check verdict, but Carney’s remark that “we are the largest client of the United States” is confirmed by the US government itself. Official US data shows that Canada bought about $440 billion worth of US goods and services in 2024, more than any other country, and the Office of the US Trade Representative notes on its website that “in 2024, Canada was the top destination for U.S. exports” as well as “the third-largest source of U.S. imports.” Trump also repeated his frequent claim that the US is “subsidizing Canada to the tune of maybe $200 billion per year.” Trump has previously made clear that he is speaking about the US trade deficit with Canada, but that is not even close to $200 billion. Official US statistics show the 2024 deficit with Canada in goods and services trade was about $36 billion. Even if you only count trade in goods and ignore the services trade at which the US excels, the deficit was about $71 billion. And even if he was this time using the word “subsidizing” to describe unspecified other things in addition to the trade deficit, there is no basis for the claim. 7. A man spent 45 days in jail, accused of trying to abduct a child at Walmart. A judge granted a bond after lawyer shows video A man spent 45 days in jail, accused of trying to abduct a child at Walmart. A judge granted a bond after lawyer shows video Mahendra Patel, who is facing attempted kidnapping and other charges after a mother accused him of trying to grab her 2-year-old son from her at a Georgia Walmart, has been granted a $10,000 bond after being held in a Cobb County jail for 45 days. “I’m going to grant this man a bond. He’s entitled to a bond,” Cobb County Superior Court Judge A. Gregory Poole said in court Tuesday. Patel was released later in the day, his attorney told CNN. Patel’s lawyer, Ashleigh Merchant, presented her case as to why he should be released by showing the judge a compilation of security footage that she subpoenaed from Walmart and shared with media outlets including CNN. They show the March 18 incident at a Walmart in the city of Acworth, about 30 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta. Merchant said Patel was just trying to make sure the boy didn’t fall from a scooter his mother was riding on with him in her lap. Patel had the support of numerous people who were in another room at the courthouse, including friends, relatives and neighbors, the attorney told the judge. The footage is somewhat grainy and Patel’s back obscures part of what is happening. Mahendra Patel is seen interacting with a woman at a Walmart. CNN has highlighted a portion of this image. – The Merchant Law Firm P.C. Prosecutors argued the video shows Patel grabbed the child, he shouldn’t have and he fled after the incident. Merchant contended Patel did not flee the scene, and that he has strong ties in the community, such as property ownership, a wife and daughters, volunteering at local nonprofits and being a member of organizations such as the Kiwanis Club. Cobb County Chief Assistant District Attorney Jesse Evans said Patel was previously convicted of a felony for a financial scheme and was arrested on suspicion of DUI. “I’m not worried about that. I don’t believe he poses a risk to the community,” said Poole. “The evidence from the video, and I won’t comment on what I think the video really shows, as far as guilt or innocence. It’s not my job today. But the facts do show me that he hung around, and I don’t find that he’s a flight risk based upon what I saw in the video,” Poole said. Caroline Miller, 26, told police Patel asked for help finding Tylenol at the Walmart. She said Patel tried to grab her 2-year-old son from her, but she pulled the child back. CNN has attempted to reach Miller, who previously has spoken publicly about the incident, for comment. When reached by phone, a family member told CNN that Miller declined to comment. A grand jury indicted Patel on April 3 on charges of criminal attempt to commit kidnapping, simple assault and simple battery, according to court documents. Patel, 57, spent his birthday in jail, according to his attorney. The suit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court seeks at least $50 million in damages over the alleged assaults, which the women say took place between 2007 and 2024, and labor violations including a hostile work environment, illegally long hours and lack of pay. A message seeking comment from a representative for the 85-year-old Robinson was not immediately answered. The four women each say that Robinson would wait until he was alone with them in his Los Angeles house then ********* assault and ***** them over their objections. All said they eventually quit over the assaults, though in some cases it took several years. And all said they feared coming forward over fears of retaliation, public shame and possible effects on their immigration status. All four women withheld their legal names citing privacy concerns and are identified as Jane Does in court documents. The lawsuit also names Robinson’s wife Frances Robinson as a defendant, alleging that she enabled his behavior despite knowing about past ******* misconduct. It also blames her for the hostile work environment, saying she berated them with language that included ethnic slurs. One woman said she worked for the Robinsons from 2012 until 2024, and was assaulted at least 20 times in that span. Another said she worked for them from 2014 until 2020, and was assaulted at least 23 times. Another said she worked for them for a year before quitting in 2024 and was assaulted at least seven times. The fourth woman, who said she also acted as Frances Robinson’s personal assistant, hairdresser and cook, worked for them for 18 years before resigning in 2024. She cited similar experiences to the other women, but did not say how often she was assaulted. The suit seeks damages based on ******* battery, assault, false imprisonment, gender violence and other allegations. Robinson, a member of both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, was among the biggest hitmakers of the 1960s — both with his group the Miracles and as a solo artist, with songs including “Tears of a Clown” and “The Tracks of My Tears.” He was a central part of the Motown Records music machine in his hometown of Detroit as an artist, producer and songwriter for other artists. 18. SpaceX gets FAA permission for fivefold increase in launches in Texas SpaceX gets FAA permission for fivefold increase in launches in Texas The Super Heavy booster returns to its launch pad after the SpaceX Starship continued to space after it was launched on its eighth test at the company’s Boca Chica launch pad in Brownsville, Texas, U.S., March 6, 2025. Joe Skipper | Reuters SpaceX has been granted permission by the Federal Aviation Administration to launch and land its massive Starship rockets and Super Heavy boosters up to 25 times per year from the company’s Starbase spaceport in Texas. The aerospace and defense contractor run by Elon Musk was previously restricted to five Starship launches per year from the site. While SpaceX submitted the proposal to increase its launch cadence on the Texas Gulf Coast during the Biden administration, a final environmental assessment was just announced on Tuesday, more than three months into President Donald Trump’s term. Musk has been a central figure in President Trump’s second administration, leading an effort to shrink the federal government and regulatory agencies, including those that oversee his companies. The decision that the FAA announced on Tuesday is one piece of the agency’s license review process for launches. “There are other licensing requirements still to be completed,” the FAA said in an emailed statement, with ongoing reviews that pertain to “policy, payload, safety, financial responsibility and environmental impacts.” “Once the evaluation process is complete, the FAA will make a determination to approve or deny the license application,” the agency said. In its final environmental assessment, the FAA decided that SpaceX’s proposal for more launches from Boca Chica, Texas, would have “no significant impact” to the environment in the vicinity. The determination follows a string of SpaceX Starship test flights and explosions, and legal clashes between the company, environmental groups and the FAA. SpaceX originally designed its Starship rockets with the goal of launching cargo, and as many as 100 people at a time, to space. Musk has long promised SpaceX would conduct manned missions to Mars in the near future with Starship, though a realistic timeline for his goal remains elusive. SpaceX’s first integrated Starship vehicle launched from the Boca Chica facility in April 2023, and exploded mid-flight. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service soon disclosed details about the aftermath of that explosion, including that a “3.5-acre fire started south of the pad site on Boca Chica State Park land,” following the test flight. Fire and debris destroyed nests, eggs and fragile habitat of endangered species in the area, the New York Times reported. The next month, the Center for Biological Diversity and other environmental advocates, sued the FAA over purportedly inadequate environmental reviews before granting SpaceX permission to conduct those launches. By August 2024, Texas state and federal environmental regulators had fined SpaceX after determining the company had violated the Clean Water Act at Starbase, repeatedly polluting waters in the area. Musk then threatened to sue the FAA for “regulatory overreach” when the agency said it would levy fines against SpaceX after alleged licensing and safety-related violations during two other launches in 2023. Musk didn’t sue, however. Instead, he spent almost $300 million to propel Trump back to the White House. A senior attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity, Jared Margolis, said in an email to CNBC on Tuesday, that his group was “incredibly disappointed, though not surprised, that the FAA has allowed SpaceX to drastically increase the number of launches and the associated harm to an ecologically critical area without taking the time to fully analyze and mitigate the impacts to the community and wildlife.” A SpaceX spokesperson didn’t respond to a request for comment. The decision by the FAA comes days after SpaceX won an election over the weekend to incorporate Starbase as its own city. The mayor and two city commissioners both come from SpaceX’s employee ranks. Every job will be affected, some will be lost Every job will be affected, some will be lost Nvidia (NVDA) founder and CEO Jensen Huang served up a blunt take on the job market as AI permeates society. “You will not lose your job to AI, but will lose it to someone who uses it,” Huang said at the Milken Institute Conference on Tuesday. Added Huang, “I recommend 100% take advantage of AI, don’t be that person.” He suggested downloading software like Perplexity and OpenAI’s ChatGPT to learn more about AI use cases. Despite the continued growth of AI in corporate America and Nvidia’s eye-popping profit increases, Nvidia investors have contended with an un-Nvidia-like 2025. Shares are down by 15% year to date, hit by the one-two punch of the Trump administration’s crackdown on AI chip exports to China and fears of capacity overbuild in the US. The read-through to Nvidia has been that, while it will still likely have a big year financially, growth rates may not be at the stellar pace delivered in 2024. But the first quarter results from tech giants Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (GOOG), and Meta (META) poked a hole in that bearish narrative. The three hyperscalers struck an upbeat tone on AI services demand and said they would continue to spend aggressively on AI-related capital expenditures. Tomtoc Releases Nintendo Switch 2 Version Of Its Popular Form-Fitting Travel Case Tomtoc Releases Nintendo Switch 2 Version Of Its Popular Form-Fitting Travel Case Carrying case and travel bag manufacturer Tomtoc has been a popular choice for Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck users for years. Now, like many other third-party companies, Tomtoc has launched its first options for Nintendo Switch 2. The manufacturer is known for its sleek, hardshell cases as well as its range of stylish shoulder bags, and the pair of Switch 2 Tomtoc products showcase exactly that. Tomtoc’s Carrying Case and Crossbody Sling Bag are available to ship now from Amazon. Tomtoc’s hardshell case has quickly vaulted to the top of Amazon’s list of the best-selling Nintendo Switch cases, and is pretty high up on the bestsellers list for gaming in general (as of May 6). With preorders for Nintendo’s official Switch 2 carrying cases currently sold out, Tomtoc’s cases will likely continue to be popular as we inch closer to the Switch 2’s June 5 launch. $33.30 (was $37) with coupon The Switch 2 version of Tomtoc’s signature design, this hardshell case offers a form-fitting, sleek design. Tomtoc used water-resistant felt materials to provide a soft feel on both the outside and inside of the case. While you’ll still want to carry your Switch 2 around carefully, if Tomtoc’s Switch and Steam Deck cases are any indication, this Switch 2 case should provide ample protection. The precision fit, shock-absorbing cushions, and materials, which Tomtoc claims are lighter and sturdier than EVA, should keep your console snug and safe, whether it’s bouncing around inside your backpack or (hopefully not) tumbling toward cement. Other useful features include a sturdy buckle, an adjustable wrist-strap that can also double as a handle, and space to store up to 12 game cards. Normally $37, you can save 10% on the price by clicking the coupon box below the price. There are three color options: ******, gray, and white. $45 (was $50) with promo code Tomtoc’s other option gives you enough space to carry your Switch 2 and several accessories. This crossbody bag is also constructed from lightweight materials, and inside you’ll find a dedicated compartment for your Switch 2. This section is crafted with an EVA hard shell to help shield against collisions, and there’s a soft lining to help protect the Switch screen from any scratches. You’ll also find enough space here for a Switch 2 Pro Controller, up to eight game cards, a charger, and space for smaller accessories like additional cables and earphones. You can also get a 10% discount on this bag by clicking the coupon on the page listing. Three color options are available: ******, two-tone gray, and a red and white edition. $50 (was $53) If you have multiple large gaming handhelds, Tomtoc also offers a bag that is shaped to hold a Switch 2 or one of several mobile PC gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck or ROG Ally X. This plush shoulder bag has a removable EVA insert designed to protect your handheld from drops as well as plenty of space for accessories. Unlike the two options above, this Tomtoc bag isn’t a brand-new release, but it’s worth mentioning here because of its versatility and standing as one of Tomtoc’s most popular travel bags. The three cases above are just the tip of the Switch 2 iceberg when it comes to third-party accessories for Nintendo Switch 2 at Amazon. Some of the highlights here include hardshell carrying cases designed to offer a more durable option at an attractive price, like Spigen’s Rugged Armor Protective Case/Grip for $30 at Amazon. JSAUX, another popular manufacturer of Steam Deck and Switch accessories, also just released a range of Switch 2 accessories for budget-friendly prices. Here’s a quick rundown of some of the other carrying cases, grips, and screen protectors that are available now for Switch 2. 24. Poll suggests almost half of Gazans willing to leave Poll suggests almost half of Gazans willing to leave Almost half of the residents of the Gaza Strip may be willing to apply to Israel to help them leave to other countries, according to a survey that also showed significant support for anti-****** protests. The survey by the ************ Centre for Policy and Survey Research was based on polling of people across the Gaza Strip and in the occupied West Bank between May 1-4, six weeks after Israeli forces resumed operations in the enclave following the breakdown of a brief ceasefire. The centre, a think tank based in Ramallah and funded by foreign donors, said in the report that 49 per cent of those surveyed declared that they would be willing to apply to Israel to help them emigrate via Israeli ports and airports, against 50 per cent who said they would not be willing to do so. Israeli officials have said that Israel will help Gazans who wish to leave the enclave but it has made little headway persuading other countries to accept them. Although Israel’s 19-month campaign has reduced most of the Gaza Strip to rubble and a blockade on aid since March has left the 2.3 million population increasingly short of food, many Palestinians believe that leaving would mean effectively surrendering their home to Israel. Hardline Israeli ministers have made little secret of their wish to see the whole Gaza Strip population moved out of the enclave, in line with US President Donald Trump’s proposal to redevelop the area as a coastal resort under US control. The survey also stated 48 per cent of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip supported a series of anti-****** demonstrations that sprang up in various places around the enclave, a much higher level than among Palestinians in the West Bank, where only 14 per cent backed the protests, a rare public show of opposition to the militant group. At the same time, 54 per cent of Gazans also thought the protests, which ****** said were set up by Israeli intelligence services, were steered by outside hands and only 20 per cent said they expressed the real opinion of the population. The centre said the survey’s sample was 1270 with a margin of error of +/-3.5 per cent. Source link #Poll #suggests #Gazans #leave Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  25. Nvidia CEO explains 2 ways AI will boost the global economy Nvidia CEO explains 2 ways AI will boost the global economy 00:00 Speaker A All of you have heard a lot about, about job displacement. Uh every job will be affected. Uh some jobs will be lost, some jobs will be created. Uh but every job will be affected. And immediately, it is unquestionable, you’re not going to lose a job, your job to an AI, but you’re going to lose your job to somebody who uses AI. But let me give you and those are, those are fairly common sense things to, to, to, to have observed. But let me give you two extremes that you might want to consider as well. Uh 01:56 Speaker A computer technology, computer science has benefited about 30 million people. There are about 30 million people in the world who knows how to program and use this, use this technology to its extreme. And it’s really benefited all of us that have been in this industry the last 30 years. Uh potentially one of the best and most, most wealth creating industry you could have selected. I could have, I could have been a petroleum engineer. My dad was and I could have been, I could have been a doctor. My mom thinks everybody should be a doctor and but I chose, I chose uh to, to go into computer engineering and it turned out to have been quite a good, good choice. Um and and however, however, there are about 30 million people like in, in this industry. Um and so we’ve created, like in the last, you know, 30, 40 years, probably the greatest technology divide the world’s ever seen. The, the instrument that we’ve invented, uh, we know how to use, but, but the other eight, seven and a half billion people don’t. Um 04:59 Speaker A I, I’ll, I’ll put on the table that in fact, artificial intelligence is the greatest um, opportunity for us to close the technology divide and then let me prove it to you. You know, if we just look in this room, it’s very unlikely that more than a handful of people know how to program with C++. Um and uh and equal, equal number know how to program in C. Um and yet, 100% of you know how to program an AI. And the reason for that is because AI will speak whatever language you want it to speak. You could draw a schematic and show it to it. You could draw a picture and ask it what to do. Um you could, you know, obviously talk to it in, in words. You could, you could write a prompt. Uh you could describe your prompt in a very explicit way. You could describe your prompt prompt in a very implicit way. Uh and if you don’t know how to program that computer using AI, you just tell the AI, I don’t know how to program you. How do I program you? And the AI will tell you exactly how to program you. And and program it. And so I think that, that um and the number of people who are using chat GPT and Gemini Pro and uh these AIs kind of demonstrate that in fact, this is one of the easiest to use technologies in history. And so now all everybody could take advantage of this capability, whether there’s a teacher or a student wanting a tutor and every student should use it as a tutor. I use it as a tutor every day. And so I think the, the ability for us to now use artificial intelligence to close the technology gap is incredible. So that’s one extreme. 08:43 Speaker A The other extreme that I will say is that remember, uh we’re we have a shortage of labor. We have a shortage of workers. We don’t have an abundance of workers. We have a shortage of. And for the very first time in history, we actually have, we can imagine the opportunity to close that gap, to put 30, 40 million workers back into the workforce, um that otherwise, otherwise the world doesn’t have. And so you could, you could argue that artificial intelligence is probably our best way to increase the GDP, the global GDP.
