Trump gets wish list in House GOP tax bill, with some exceptions
President Donald Trump won more than he lost in the House GOP’s newly unveiled tax legislation, though some of his priorities were slimmed down and his bid to raise taxes on some financial heavyweights wasn’t included.
The bill — which the House tax-writing committee will take up Tuesday — not only delivers on his promise to make a slew of his expiring 2017 tax cuts permanent, but also includes tax relief for tips, seniors and overtime work. Trump also got his request to give taxpayers a deduction for the interest they pay on auto loans, and to limit deductions for the purchase of sports teams.
The bill leaves a placeholder to at least triple the state and local tax deduction, after Trump promised blue-state Republicans during the presidential campaign that he would “get SALT back,” a break prized by their constituents that is now capped at $10,000. The exact contours are still up for discussion, though, Speaker Mike Johnson said.
In an homage to Trump’s populist base, Republicans would create a new tax-preferred savings plan called a “MAGA account” for children under the age of eight.
The draft also delivers another key Trump demand — a $4 trillion debt ceiling hike. The president raised the issue in private for months, saying he did not want to be forced into a massive spending deal with Democrats in order to avoid a debt default.
Trump took to his Truth Social platform and declared the bill “GREAT.”
“When I return from the Middle East, where great things will happen for America, we will work together on any and all outstanding issues, but there shouldn’t be many,” he wrote.
But the bill would require Trump to make some compromises. The breaks for tips, seniors and overtime pay would only last four years and include income restrictions for qualifying. That’s a nod to the fiscal constraints Republican tax writers are working under, which require trillions of dollars in spending cuts to offset some of the cost of the tax cuts.
And the plan doesn’t heed Trump’s call to eliminate the ”carried interest loophole” that taxes some income earned by private equity and hedge fund managers at a lower rate than normal income.
A tax increase on the highest-earning Americans, which administration officials had said was on the table, didn’t make it in either. Trump himself sent conflicting signals about the idea, seeming to embrace a “tiny” increase, while simultaneously saying it would be a bad political move.
Of course, this isn’t the end of the road for the bill. It’s just the beginning. The massive bill’s path through the GOP’s slim majority in the House is by no means assured. Deficit hawks are still upset.
Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) took to X after the bill’s release to complain that the GOP’s plan “leaves more than $20 trillion in additional debt in 10 years — and most of the [spending] cuts are beyond the Trump years.”
Assuming the legislation gets through the House, some additional business breaks are likely to be added in the Senate. But the chamber could also pare things.
The House text is “a good start,” said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) on Monday. Asked what changes he wants, Cornyn quipped, “How much time do you have? I don’t have that much time.”
“I want to wait and see what the House actually passes because these at this point are just sort of ideas,” Cornyn said.
Trump’s top economic adviser, Kevin Hassett, appeared to acknowledge as much shortly after House Republicans released the bill Monday, calling it “a great first step.”
Jordain Carney and Megan Messerly contributed to this report.

Rule of law is ‘endangered,’ chief justice says
Rule of law is ‘endangered,’ chief justice says
Chief Justice John Roberts described the rule of law as “endangered” and warned against “trashing the justices,” but speaking in Washington Monday he didn’t point fingers directly at President Donald Trump or his allies for publicly excoriating judges who’ve ruled against aspects of Trump’s agenda.
“The notion that rule of law governs is the basic proposition,” Roberts said during an appearance at Georgetown Law. “Certainly as a matter of theory, but also as a matter of practice, we need to stop and reflect every now and then how rare that is, certainly rare throughout history, and rare in the world today.”
As many legal experts express grave concern about Trump’s attacks on law firms and with several federal judges advancing inquiries into whether the administration is refusing to comply with court orders, Roberts took a longer-term view Monday. He blamed schools for shortchanging civics education and leaving students with little understanding of the structure of U.S. government or the role of the courts.
“That’s really too bad,” the chief justice told graduating students at the law school. “We’re developing a situation where a whole group of young people is growing up having no real sense about how our system of justice works.”
Roberts suggested some recent verbal attacks on the justices had gone too far, but he gave no specific examples. “The court has obviously made mistakes throughout its history, and those should be criticized, so long as it is in terms of the decision, really, and not ad hominem against the justices. I just think that doesn’t do any good,” the chief justice said.
In March, Roberts responded quickly when Trump called U.S. District Judge James Boasberg “crooked” and urged he be impeached for his rulings related to the administration’s deportation of hundreds of men to a notorious prison in El Salvador.
“Impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision,” Roberts, an appointee of George W. Bush, said at the time.
In a speech earlier this month, Roberts’ most junior colleague — Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, a Biden appointee — condemned “threats and harassment” that she said amounted to “attacks on our democracy [that] ultimately risk undermining our Constitution and the rule of law.”
Roberts’ public tone since Jackson’s remarks has been notably less dire. At a judicial event in Buffalo last week, he repeated his earlier written statement opposing impeachment of judges over decisions, but passed up the opportunity to elaborate.
Roberts assured the students Monday that the tense public atmosphere surrounding the judiciary and the fact that the justices “disagree a lot” hasn’t led to the kind of “toxic” personal strife that has permeated the Supreme Court at various times in its history.
“We have to work together on these things that are difficult. You find a way to get along,” Roberts said. “It’s a long job. If you’re sort of really at each other’s throats with bad feelings and stuff like that, it just — it’s not a good way to function. … We do have to address some very, very difficult things, and we’re the only people who are doing it.”
For the second time in a week, Roberts, 70, signaled that he has no plans to step down from the court. As he discussed the recent death of retired Justice David Souter, Roberts recalled his former colleague’s “unconventional” decision to step down in 2009 at age 69 without any known health issues or indication his mind was declining. Roberts said Souter said he wanted to return to New Hampshire and “get back to reading some good books.”
“There aren’t many people who would have that kind of perspective, including myself — I wouldn’t claim to have that kind of view — but sort of a very good, balanced way of looking at all of it,” the chief justice said.

Booming squirrel population drives popular Southern California beach community nuts
Booming squirrel population drives popular Southern California beach community nuts
A squirrel population that appears to be growing out of control has residents at one famous Southern California beach community concerned.
Dozens of fuzzy critters were seen running around Santa Monica’s Palisades Park, stretching along Ocean Avenue, as KTLA’s Kimberly Cheng talked to residents Monday.
“These squirrels have become kind of desensitized to all of the people … I almost trip over them when I jog because they don’t get out of your way,” Santa Monica resident Gary Spiegel said.
Squirrels are not new to the area, but some say the population has exploded since the COVID pandemic in 2020.

The city of Santa Monica has posted signs asking the public not to feed squirrels or birds in the area.
The red and white signs say it “creates an imbalance in native ecology” and increases their dependence on humans for food, media outlet LAist reported.
Despite the signs, KTLA cameras caught several visitors to the park handing food over to the squirrels.
“It’s crazy. People come and they play with them. They feed them all the time now … I’m just like, guys, stop. Please stop feeding the squirrels,” said Santa Monica resident Aimee Flaherty, who also said the squirrels aren’t afraid of people.
“I was just sitting in the park and the squirrels came up to me and one actually crawled on my leg,” she said.
Flaherty was urging people to stop feeding the squirrels because she doesn’t want the population to be controlled by the city or for any poisons to be used.

Gold holds heavy loss as markets latch onto US-China optimism
Gold holds heavy loss as markets latch onto US-China optimism
Gold steadied after a sharp selloff as a major de-escalation in US-China trade tensions hurt demand for havens.
Bullion traded near $US3237 ($5076) an ounce – after losing 2.7 per cent on Monday – with investors betting on a recovery in stocks and riskier assets.
The world’s biggest economies agreed to temporarily lower tariffs, with the US slashing duties on ******** products to 30 per cent from 145 per cent for a 90-day *******, while Beijing dropped its levy on most goods to 10 per cent.
The US dollar rose the most since a post-election rally in November, while Treasury yields climbed – both acting as headwinds for gold. Traders now see just two rate cuts from the Federal Reserve in 2025 in a reset of inflation expectations. That reduces bullion’s appeal as the metal pays no interest.
Gold remains almost a quarter higher this year, although the easing of US-China tensions has given traders a clear indication President Donald Trump’s administration is taking a softer approach to the clashes. Still, some investors remain wary about the lack of detail in their announcement, and another flare-up could propel bullion back toward the record set last month.
Spot gold was steady at $US3237.86 ($5077.80) an ounce at 7:38 a.m. in Singapore.
The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index was flat, after rising 1 per cent on Monday. Silver, palladium and platinum were little changed.

A music teacher at Oakstead Elementary in Land O’ Lakes was arrested Monday on charges related to child ************.
Joseph Watson faces charges of two counts of possession of child ************, two counts of promotion of child ************ and two counts of unlawful use of a two-way device.
A message from Oakstead Principal Clare Ennis to families said that law enforcement confirmed the charges are not connected to the teacher’s role and that they “acted immediately to ensure the individual is no longer on campus and has no further contact with students.”
“I sincerely understand how troubling this news may be, and we will work to provide care and support to students and staff on campus,” Ennis said.
Ennis said the investigation was active and anyone with information should contact the Florida Department of Law Enforcement at (800) 226-1140.
“The safety and well-being of our students is the priority,” district spokesperson Toni Zetzsche said.
Jessica Wright, Pasco County school board member for District 4, which Oakstead Elementary is a part of, said she was deeply saddened by the news but thought it was important to be talked about openly.
“When we find out people could be putting kids in harm’s way, we’re going to make sure they’re not going to see the light of day,” she said.

Sussan Ley becomes first female leader of the Federal Liberal Party after ballot
Sussan Ley becomes first female leader of the Federal Liberal Party after ballot
Sussan Ley has made history to become the first female leader of the Federal Liberal Party after a ballot of MPs in Canberra on Tuesday morning.
Ms Ley defeated Angus Taylor in the contest to be Opposition leader, taking the place of Peter Dutton after he lost his seat of Dickson at the May 3 election.
Ms Ley had been the party’s deputy leader for the past three years.
Going in to the party room meeting, the Liberals were anticipating a tight contest but sources said Ms Ley had the edge.
They were cautious that a tight result might not be the best outcome for the party, which was already destabilised by a devastating election loss.
The numbers in the party room will also shift in July when senators Linda Reynolds, Hollie Hughes and David Fawcett depart.

Gaza’s entire population faces ‘critical’ levels of hunger: Report
Gaza’s entire population faces ‘critical’ levels of hunger: Report
Gaza’s entire population is experiencing critical levels of hunger amid the ongoing Israel-****** war and the third month of Israel cutting off aid to the strip, according to a report published Monday.
Gaza’s 2.1 million residents will face a “crisis” level of food insecurity — or worse — from now through the end of September, according to a new report from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification partnership, whose members include the World Health Organization.
“Crisis” is the third-highest level of food insecurity, out of five, according to the IPC classification system. This is when households are either struggling to access food and are seeing cases of malnutrition or “are marginally able to meet minimum food needs but only by depleting essential livelihood assets,” according to the IPC.
Of the entire population, three-quarters of Gaza’s population are already classified at the “emergency” or “catastrophe” levels, which are the two worst stages of food insecurity, per the IPC.
MORE: State of hospitals in Gaza as Israel-****** war hits 1-year mark
The report projected that by the end of September, about 470,000 people Gaza, equivalent to about 22% of the population, will be classified as living under “catastrophe,” which is equivalent to famine levels of starvation.
In the previous IPC report, released in October 2024, 12% of the population was projected to be under classified as living under “catastrophe.”
The IPC said famine is classified when an area has 20% of households facing an extreme lack of food, 30% of children suffering from acute malnutrition, and two of every 10,000 people dying each day due to starvation or a combination of malnutrition and disease.

In a press release, the WHO said the situation in Gaza is “one of the world’s worst hunger crises, unfolding in real time.”
“We do not need to wait for a declaration of famine in Gaza to know that people are already starving, sick and dying, while food and medicines are minutes away across the border,” WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement on Monday. “Today’s report shows that without immediate access to food and essential supplies, the situation will continue to deteriorate, causing more deaths and descent into famine.”
Ingredients have started running out in Gaza, and some food relief organizations have already closed.
MORE: State of hospitals in Gaza as Israel-****** war hits 1-year mark
In late April, the United Nations’ World Food Programme said it had delivered its last remaining food stocks to hot meal kitchens in Gaza, and it expected to fully run out of food in the coming days.
Additionally, the nonprofit group World Central Kitchen announced on Wednesday that it had run out of supplies and ingredients needed to cook meals or bake bread in Gaza.
“Families in Gaza are starving while the food they need is sitting at the border. We can’t get it to them because of the renewed conflict and the total ban on humanitarian aid imposed in early March,” Cindy McCain, executive director of the United Nations World Food Programme, said in a statement. “It’s imperative that the international community acts urgently to get aid flowing into Gaza again. If we wait until after a famine is confirmed, it will already be too late for many people.”
The Israeli government said the blockade is meant to pressure ****** to release its hostages, as well as the remains of those who have died, and to accept a new proposal to extend phase one of the ceasefire deal, which ended March 18.
The WHO said that since the blockade began, 57 children have died from malnutrition, citing figures from the ******-run Gaza Ministry of Health. If the current situation persists, an estimated 70,500 children between ages 6 months and just under 5 years old will experiencing acute malnutrition by March 2026, according to the IPC report.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women are also at risk with nearly 17,000 expected to need treatment for acute malnutrition by March 2026.
Aid workers told ABC News that malnutrition makes it harder for Gazans to heal from injuries suffered during the war, and they can also be at risk of infections or skin graft failure.
An official from President Donald Trump’s administration told ABC News there is a not-yet-finalized plan to administer the delivery of humanitarian aid in Gaza, starting with fewer than half a dozen distribution sites set up throughout the enclave.
“Our team members inside Gaza are surviving on the cheapest staples they can find — lentils, ***** beans, dry chickpeas — if anything is available at all,” Kate Phillips-Barrasso, vice president of global policy and advocacy for the humanitarian organization Mercy Corps, said in a statement. “The people of Gaza are enduring one of the most harrowing humanitarian crises in recent history.”
“All barriers to food, water, and aid must be lifted now,” she said, “before even more lives are lost.”

Gérard Depardieu ******* assault trial verdict expected
Gérard Depardieu ******* assault trial verdict expected
French cinema star Gérard Depardieu faces a suspended prison term and registration as a sex-offender if he is convicted today of assault.
At his trial six weeks ago, the court heard testimony from two women who said the 76-year-old actor groped them during work on a film set in Paris in 2021. Depardieu denies the allegations.
In his summing-up before the judge on 27 March, prosecutor Laurent Guy said: “It’s perfectly possible to be an excellent actor and a great father – and still commit a crime.
“You are not here to pass judgment on French cinema. You are here to judge Gérard Depardieu, just as you would any other citizen.”
The prosecutor asked for a suspended prison term of 18 months, as well as a €20,000 (£16,850) fine and registration on the sex-offenders’ list.
Claude Vincent, representing one of the two women plaintiffs, described Depardieu as a “misogynist” and a “case-study in sexism”.
But for the defence, Jérémie Assous demanded an acquittal and called the plaintiffs’ team “more militants than lawyers”.
“They cannot bear that there should even be a defence. They think any defence is a supplementary assault,” he told the court.
The alleged assaults took place in September 2021 when Depardieu was making a film called Les Volets Verts (The Green Shutters) about an ageing actor coming to terms with his declining powers.
It was the first time the actor appeared in court on ******* assault charges. Several other women have made similar allegations in the media, and an alleged ***** case could come to trial.
The first plaintiff – a set decorator – told the court that after a minor argument with Depardieu, he caught her between his legs and held her by the hips.
The second woman – an assistant director – said the actor touched her buttocks and breasts through her clothes on three separate occasions.
Depardieu denied the allegations, saying only that he might have touched the women accidentally or to keep his balance.
At the end of the hearings, Depardieu said: “My name has been dragged through the mud by lies and insults.
“A trial can be a very special experience for an actor. Seeing all this anger, the police, the press. It’s like being in a science fiction film, except it’s not science fiction. It’s life.”
He thanked the prosecution and defence teams for giving him insights into how courts operate. “These lessons may be an inspiration for me one day if I get to play a lawyer,” he said.
Depardieu said he had not worked as an actor for three years since the ******* allegations against him began to circulate.
However earlier this month it was reported he had begun work in the Azores on a film directed by his friend, the actress Fanny Ardant. Depardieu is playing a magician on a mysterious island, according to media reports.
Ardant appeared with Depardieu in Les Volets Verts and spoke in his defence at the trial.
“Genius – in whatever form it takes – carries within it an element of the extravagant, the untamed, the dangerous. (Depardieu) is the monster and the saint,” she said.
Another veteran French actress took Depardieu’s side on Monday. In a rare interview with French television, Brigitte Bardot, 90, deplored how “talented people who touch the buttocks of a girl are consigned to the deepest dungeon.”
“Feminism isn’t my thing,” Bardot said. “Personally, I like men.”

Europe relaxes CO2 emissions rules in win for carmakers
Europe relaxes CO2 emissions rules in win for carmakers
The European Union is about to approve changes to its CO2 emissions compliance rules for car manufacturers, which could save them billions of euros in fines.
At the end of last week, the European Parliament approved a change that permits manufacturers to meet their CO2 targets in 2025, 2026 and 2027 by averaging their emissions over those three years.
As before, manufacturers can pool their emissions together with other carmakers, which allows non-compliant manufacturers to combine their emissions figures with a competitor, usually after an exchange of cash.
Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now.

Carmakers have been lobbying hard to have the EU’s emissions targets, or at least their enforcement, relaxed, claiming they were on the hook for up to €16 billion ($28 billion) in fines. Money, they said, they couldn’t afford to lose given strong competition from ******** and American EV manufacturers.
Currently companies with fleet-wide average emissions over the EU’s target are liable to pay up to €95 ($165) per gram over on every vehicle sold.
European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said the change would give automakers “breathing space” to meet their obligations. Critics counter the industry has had many years to adapt to the stricter targets.
Sigrid de Vries, director general of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, said in a statement the change was a “step in the right direction that acknowledges the complexities and the ongoing difficulties of the automotive market, with slow market uptake and a lack of domestic value chain for batteries”.
The changes passed the European Parliament 458 to 101 with 14 abstentions. Now that the rule change has been approved by the European Parliament and European Commission, it awaits formal ratification by the European Council.
Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert
This revised rule represents another win for the carmakers’ lobbying group. Last year the EU passed watered down Euro 7 emissions regulations.
Due to come into force in 2030, Euro 7 includes new brake particle emissions limits, minimum performance requirements for battery durability in hybrid and electric cars, and tyre abrasion limits.
Crucially, though, instead of reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 35 per cent and tailpipe particulates by 13 per cent compared with Euro 6 as originally intended, the EU agreed to keep current restrictions in place for passenger cars and vans.
This came after intense lobbying from carmakers, some of whom argued tougher emissions rules would soak up time and resources they needed to meet the EU’s goal of banning the ***** of new petrol- and diesel-powered cars by 2035.

Doom: The Dark Ages will take you between 17-20 hours to beat. That estimate is for someone who is finding secret areas and collectibles during their run on normal difficulty, but not grabbing every single secret the first time through. GameSpot’s critic Alessandro Barbosa took 18 hours to beat the game for GameSpot’s Doom: The Dark Ages review, doing some of the side content during that run.
That time can also vary based on difficulty, as Doom: The Dark Ages has several options to choose from, with the highest options likely taking longer to work through. For anyone looking to see everything it has to offer, Doom: The Dark Ages does offer a level select, allowing you to clean up any missing secrets without replaying the entire game.

‘Terror probe’ into fire and ‘time to deliver’ on immigration
‘Terror probe’ into fire and ‘time to deliver’ on immigration
Several newspapers moved quickly late last night to get the news of counter-terrorism officers investigating a fire at the home of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer on their front pages. Among them, on a rare day with hard news on its front page, is the Daily Star – which pictures the scene behind the police barriers during the day as the inquiry got under way.
The same terror probe into the blaze at Starmer’s north London home also leads The Daily Telegraph, which has close-up photographs of the damage to the front door. The paper reports that police are investigating whether an arson attack at a second home in London linked to Starmer is related. Downing Street said they won’t comment further on a “live investigation”.
The Daily Mirror describes the fire as “a mystery blaze” in its front-page coverage and interviews neighbours who were “woken by loud noises in the early hours”.
Even before news of the fire, the PM was destined to be featuring on most front pages after a day in which he outlined his government’s new policy on immigration. The Daily Express, which often highlights the issue in its political coverage, shows it is yet to be convinced with the headline “We have it all before but now it is time to deliver”.
Care homes are “in despair”, reports the i Paper, as it highlights one of the new policy plans to stop recruiting workers from abroad. The paper reports pharmacies and the wider care industry are warning of “crippling effects” to services if visas for migrant care workers are scrapped.
The Daily Mail leads with the Conservative reaction as Tory politicians describe the prime minister as “Starmer Chameleon” for his plans. The paper’s sub-headline says the policy “goes against everything he’s ever believed in”, despite Starmer’s insistence to the contrary in his speech introducing the policy.
Starmer’s description of Britain as an “island of strangers” leads The Guardian, which reports his announcement has triggered a backlash from MPs that say his comments echo far-right rhetoric. Responding to The Guardian, the prime minister said he wouldn’t “denigrate” the contribution of migrants, but that they must “learn the language and integrate” once in the ***.
The Times is the only paper that covers the story with a picture of migrants, although it chooses three young men who have just been picked up in Dover after crossing the Channel rather than the legal migration that the PM ‘s policy is tackling. It also finds room to report for the latest in the US-China trade talks, saying that President Trump want to re-establish a “very, very good relationship” with China.
The US and China “have agreed a ceasefire in their trade war”, according to the Financial Times. It leads on the two superpowers slashing tariffs on each other’s goods for 90 days. US tariffs on ******** imports will be cut from 145% to 30%. ******** tariffs on US imports will be cut from 125% to 10%. “Markets are defaulting to assuming we’re now in a 10-30 world: 10% [tariffs] on most of the world, 30% on China,” says Ajay Rajadhyaksha of Barclays.
Meanwhile, Metro leads with the sentencing of a Bulgarian spy ring to a total of 50 years in jail. The six members, which the headline dubs ‘Putin’s Minions’, were “paid to plot the kidnap, ******* of smearing of Vladimir Putins enemies in the ***”. For three years, the group passed intel to Russian agents from a home in Great Yarmouth.

NBL boss tips Patty Mills for *********** swansong
NBL boss tips Patty Mills for *********** swansong
Larry Kestelman would be surprised if Patty Mills did not finish his career with an NBL swansong, as uncertainty surrounds the Boomers captain’s future.
The *********** NBA veteran has been a free agent since his Los Angeles Clippers suffered a 4-3 playoff series loss to Western Conference rivals the Denver Nuggets this month.
Mills has not had a long-term NBA home since being traded by the Brooklyn Nets in July 2023, suiting up for four different teams in the subsequent two seasons.
The *********** still has considerable pull as a locker-room figure for younger players, given his leadership qualities and status as a 2014 championship winner.
But Mills’ rapid-fire moves from Miami to Atlanta, to Utah and finally the Clippers have raised questions about his long-term future in the NBA.
Mills was also the 25th oldest player in the NBA this season and will turn 37 before the new season tips off in October.
It is likely Mills will wait to determine his future, having not signed on with the Utah Jazz until the weeks before the ongoing season began.
But the first *********** to reach 1000 NBA games has previously indicated he would be open to returning to the NBL one day.
He last featured in the league for the Melbourne Tigers, now Melbourne United, in 2011.
Kestelman believed Mills would at some point follow fellow Aussies Andrew Bogut, Matthew Dellavedova and Aron Baynes in returning from NBA stints to play on home soil.
“I would be surprised if Patty at some stage doesn’t come and play here. I know that’s his want and intent,” Kestelman said.
“When that is (that) needs to be on his terms, when he feels right about it.
“I can’t speak for whether it’s this year or next, but our hope is that he absolutely comes and plays in front of his family and fans here in the NBL.”
Playing in the NBL would come with a hefty pay cut for Mills, whose deal for the 2024/25 season was worth $5.3 million.
The salary cap for the 2025/26 NBL season sits at a little more than $2 million for an entire squad, but clubs are able to exceed that limit if they pay a luxury tax.
That rule has permitted clubs to lure such star locals as Dellavedova, Xavier Cooks and Jack White back from overseas stints in recent times.
The Adelaide 36ers, Melbourne United and Perth Wildcats are among the clubs on the lookout for starting guards for next season, with the last of those teams needing to fill the sizeable gap left by long-term import Bryce Cotton.
Kestelman, who bought the league in 2015, has always wanted the NBL to be a place *********** superstars could finish their careers.
“It was always part of the vision to have a bit of a circular economy where we can create a product in the NBL that some of the youngest stars can come, develop their skills and go to the NBA,” he said.
“And vice versa, especially for Australians, that there’s a league that they can be proud of to come and play for the last few years of their career.”

Stocks set to mostly climb

Asia-Pacific markets are poised to mostly climb Tuesday, following a massive rally on Wall Street after the U.S. and China announced a trade deal, including a 90-day pause on tariffs and a drop in reciprocal tariffs by 115 percentage points.
Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 is set to rise at the open, with futures tied to the benchmark at 8,364, compared to its Monday close of 8,233.50.
Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 was set to open higher, with the futures contract in Chicago at 38,745 while its counterpart in Osaka last traded at 38,730, against the index’s last close of 37,644.26
Futures for Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index stood at 23,403, pointing to a weaker open compared to the HSI’s last close of 23,549.46.
U.S. stock futures were flat after all three key benchmarks hit their best day since April 9, as investors awaited the release of an inflation report.
Overnight stateside, stocks soared as investors’ fears of a recession in the U.S., sparked by a trade war with China, were abated after the two superpowers arrived at a deal.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 1,160.72 points, or 2.81%, and closed at 42,410.10. The 30-stock index ended the session near its highs of the day, with buying enthusiasm remaining strong.
Meanwhile, the broad-based S&P 500 popped 3.26% to end at 5,844.19, giving it gains of over 20% since its April intraday low at the height of tariff pessimism. The benchmark’s year-to-date losses have now narrowed to just 0.6%.
The Nasdaq Composite added 4.35% and settled at 18,708.34, as the details of the trade deal sent technology stocks with exposure to China — like Tesla and Apple — higher.
— CNBC’s Brian Evans, Yun Li and Fred Imbert contributed to this report.

Trump family’s bitcoin mining venture to go public — as Trump crypto interests grow
Trump family’s bitcoin mining venture to go public — as Trump crypto interests grow
A bitcoin mining firm backed by President Trump’s son Eric will go public this year, the company announced Monday, deepening the Trump family’s interest in cryptocurrency.
American Bitcoin — which lists Eric Trump as its co-founder and has its roots in a company backed by Donald Trump Jr. — is merging with the publicly-traded Gryphon Digital Mining. The all-stock transaction will allow the firm backed by the Trump brothers to be listed on the Nasdaq exchange. The merger is expected to close as early as the third quarter of this year.
The company’s goals, according to an overview posted Monday, are to mine new bitcoin “below market cost” and to build up a reserve of the cryptocurrency.
“Our vision for American Bitcoin is to create the most investable Bitcoin accumulation platform in the market,” Eric Trump said in a statement.
American Bitcoin was launched in March, with crypto mining firm Hut 8 owning a majority stake. At the time, the company said it “aims to become the world’s largest, most efficient pure-play Bitcoin miner.” It’s the successor to American Data Centers, a venture backed by Eric Trump, his older brother Donald Trump Jr. and publicly traded Dominari Holdings.
Crypto mining also has a stamp of approval from Eric and Donald Trump Jr.’s father. The president pledged to make the United States a “bitcoin mining powerhouse” last year.
What is bitcoin mining — and why is it controversial?
Mining is an essential part of how bitcoin operates. The currency isn’t centralized, and instead relies on independent actors — known as miners — who carry out complicated math problems to verify bitcoin transactions and list them on a public ledger known as a blockchain. As a reward for this work, miners earn units of bitcoin for crunching the numbers successfully.
The value of a bitcoin stands at around $102,000, and the reward for mining decreases over time as the number of bitcoin in circulation increases, making mining a lucrative endeavor.
But mining is controversial because it’s extremely energy-intensive, with miners operating gigantic data centers filled with server racks that carry out the mathematical operations necessary to mine. A team from Cambridge University estimates bitcoin uses about 187.9 terawatt-hours of electricity per year, more than the entire country of Egypt.
Trump family’s crypto empire grows
The Trump brothers’ foray into bitcoin mining marks the family’s latest crypto venture. The president and his two eldest sons are backing the crypto exchange World Liberty Financial, which got a multi-billion dollar boost earlier this month from an Abu Dhabi-based firm, and Mr. Trump launched a highly volatile “meme coin” called $TRUMP in January.
Crypto investments make up about $2.9 billion of the family’s net worth, one report estimates.
The Trump family’s interest in cryptocurrency has drawn criticism for conflicts of interest. Last week, Senate Democrats blocked a crypto regulation bill from moving forward and pushed for it to include new limits on elected officials participating in some types of crypto ventures, with Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts accusing Mr. Trump of “crypto corruption.”
The White House has pushed back on the criticism. White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said last week Mr. Trump’s “assets are in a trust managed by his children, and there are no conflicts of interest.”
