  1. Real-Life Doom: The Dark Ages Armor Looks Very Cool And Also Cumbersome To Wear Real-Life Doom: The Dark Ages Armor Looks Very Cool And Also Cumbersome To Wear Doom: The Dark Ages is out this week, and like previous games in the series, its protagonist is wearing a very fashionable suit of armor to battle. The Doom Slayer is instantly recognizable thanks to his hulking physique and signature battlesuit, which has been tweaked once again to match the medieval themes of the new Doom game. But what would that armor look like in real life? Very cool, and very cumbersome for the person inside it. But mostly cool. YouTuber Emily the Engineer–who specializes in 3D prints and builds on her channel–was tasked with bringing the Doom Slayer’s armor to life by Bethesda, as the company sent her the official game-model files to use for this ambitious project. What followed was a Herculean effort to get the files ready for 3D-printing, a mind-numbing amount of sanding, painting, and figuring out how to fit into a suit of armor that looked like it was designed for Reacher actor Alan Ritchson to wear. The end result is still impressive, even if moving around in the costume is a bit on the cumbersome side because of the sheer number of armor pieces here. The final build is quite intimidating, and if you had something like this on display in your home, it would make for an instant neck-turner. While most of us don’t have access to a small army of 3D printers, you can pick up an official Doom Slayer replica helmet. Priced at $175, it features LED light effects, an adjustable strap, and it looks like it was ripped straight from the game. It also comes with a Doom keycard replica and three woven patches as extras. Doom: The Dark Ages launches on May 15–or right now if you preordered the Premium or Collector’s Editions for 48-hour early access–for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Bethesda and Microsoft have dialed up the marketing for the game to celebrate its release, with other promotions focused on official Doom controllers, a very cool custom Doom Harley Davidson motorcycle, and Doom-inspired pizza that comes with several digital goodies. WA Wildlife reports rise in mysterious syndrome harming the State’s iconic ****** swans WA Wildlife reports rise in mysterious syndrome harming the State’s iconic ****** swans WA Wildlife has reported a considerable rise in a mysterious syndrome harming the State’s ****** swans. The not-for-profit organisation said it is treating an increasing number of ****** swans for a photosensitivity syndrome. “Over the past few months, WA Wildlife has observed a notable increase in ****** swans presenting with a mysterious photosensitivity syndrome, particularly around the Swan River,” the Bibra Lake-based organisation wrote in a Facebook post on Monday. “While we typically see just a handful of cases each year, we’ve treated over 20 swans in 2025 alone, most rescued by our friends at WA Seabird Rescue.” The birds — which appear on the State’s flag — have been suffering from painful symptoms. Camera IconThe birds — who appear on the State’s flag — have been suffering from painful symptoms. Credit: Facebook/WA Wildlife The rescue centre said the cause of the syndrome is unknown, but claimed it could be linked to toxic exposure or liver dysfunction from environmental triggers. These factors increase the sensitivity of the skin to sunlight. Fortunately, WA Wildlife said the majority of swans see improvement in their symptoms. “Most birds recover well with dedicated supportive care, including pain management, wound treatment and time in UV-protected enclosures to prevent further damage,” it wrote. According to the WA Wildlife website, the native wildlife hospital treats more than 6500 animals from 280 species each year. Magpies across WA have also fallen victim to a mysterious syndrome, however, this particular disease is deadly. It is estimated hundreds of thousands of the birds have suffered from magpie paralysis syndrome, also known as ****** and white bird paralysis, with cases rising in spring and summer. CEO of WA Wildlife, Dean Huxley, said the mass deaths “feel almost apocalyptic”. 5. Thames Water chairman apologises to customers but defends bonuses for bosses Thames Water chairman apologises to customers but defends bonuses for bosses Thames Water’s chairman has apologised to customers while insisting it is “not a failing company” and saying that hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of recent bonuses for bosses were justified. Sir Adrian Montague told MPs on Tuesday that he wanted to apologise for “letting customers down” in recent years and at times causing people “real hardship”. When asked about attempts to turn the struggling water company around, he said: “We realise there is a vast amount to be done to bring performance up to scratch. We know we are letting customers down. “We know that pollutions, we know that spills, we know that supply interruptions cause inconvenience and sometimes real hardship. “So I think the right thing to do is to start a discussion of the turnaround plan by acknowledging that we haven’t always served our customers as well as we should, and through the committee apologising to them.” Sir Adrian was appearing in front of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Efra) select committee of MPs on Tuesday. Thames Water is England’s biggest water firm and supplies about 16 million households across London and the South East. The company has been at the centre of growing public outrage over the extent of pollution, rising bills, high dividends, and executive pay and bonuses at the ***’s privatised water firms. It also has about £19 billion of debt, and was recently allowed to take another high-cost loan which could reach £3 billion to stave off imminent collapse. In sometimes heated exchanges with MPs, Sir Adrian revealed how close the company had come to running out of money in the last year. He said: “There were times in the last year that we had five weeks’ liquidity – and running a £20 billion corporation on five weeks’ liquidity, honestly, it’s hair-raising.” Thames Water has faced public outrage over the extent of sewage pollution in recent years (Andrew Matthews/PA) He also defended taking on the extra £3 billion of debt on financial terms described as “eye-watering” even by the High Court judge who approved it. Sir Adrian said: “We were in a beggars-can’t-be-choosers situation, we were running along the edge of the precipice. We had to secure the financial future of the company.” Despite this, he defended handing out hundreds of thousands of pounds in bonus payments to top bosses in recent years. He said: “We live in a competitive marketplace and we have to provide the right sort of packages to these people otherwise the head hunters come knocking.” When asked by Labour MP Helena Dollimore why head hunters would recruit from “a failing company” he disputed her characterisation. Sir Adrian said: “It’s not a failing company. It’s a company in recovery. We are making progress.” Story Continues The committee session comes six weeks after Thames picked investment firm KKR as its “preferred partner” to buy the water firm. Nonetheless, chief executive Chris Weston told MPs it remains a “very fluid situation”, with the possibility the company could still fall into public ownership. He acknowledged that hundreds of millions of pounds in penalties Thames Water faces for missing performance targets made it more difficult for a new investor to come in. Asked whether, if the current process with KKR fails, it would be too late for Thames Water to go back to other potential investors, or if it would result in a special administration regime, Mr Weston said: “It’s a very fluid situation but those both are possibilities.” He said it would depend on factors such as what the creditors would do, and added: “There’s no guarantee we would not stay on a market-led solution as opposed to a special administration, but it is a very fluid situation and those are all possibilities.” Thames Water is struggling with about £19 billion of debt (Andrew Matthews/PA) Meanwhile, Sir Adrian admitted that bosses will receive millions of pounds in bonuses as part of the £3 billion loan agreed earlier this year. The so-called retention incentives could amount to “50% of salary”, which the chairman said was important to stop rivals from “picking off” top executives. Sir Adrian said: “We have a bonus scheme to protect our most precious resource, which is the senior management team.” The bonuses could lead to senior bosses getting £1 million on top of their annual salaries and regular bonuses. Chief executive Mr Weston had already been criticised for accepting a £195,000 bonus for his first three months in the job last year. When asked earlier in the session if it was wise to accept such a large bonus so soon into the role, Mr Weston said: “I think in the first three months I did make a difference.” He added that when he joined Thames it had “lost direction a bit”. “I was the fifth chief executive in five years … that creates a confusion for people in the company.” He said: “It is a big ship to turn around. It is very difficult.” Efra committee chairman Alistair Carmichael said after the session: “Our hearing with Thames Water bosses this morning raised real concerns about the company’s commitment to transparency and accountability to its customers. “Alarm bells are ringing about the processes underpinning its proposed takeover bid by KKR and the potential for a corporate stitch-up that benefits those at the top and fails to deliver for customers and the environment.” Source link #Thames #Water #chairman #apologises #customers #defends #bonuses #bosses Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  9. England pick five for Windies ODIs despite IPL clash England pick five for Windies ODIs despite IPL clash England have included five Indian Premier League players in their one-day international squad to face the West Indies, including former captain Jos Buttler, but have not ruled out allowing individuals to skip the series in favour of their franchise. A clash between the closing stages of the IPL and England’s three-match series came about after mounting hostilities between India and Pakistan saw the lucrative tournament paused, then rescheduled. The restarted IPL is due to conclude on June 3, while Harry Brook’s first assignment as England captain features games on May 29, June 1 and June 3. The situation has put the England and Wales Cricket Board in a difficult position, torn between supporting its Indian counterparts at a sensitive time, allowing its players to fulfil their contracts and maintaining the integrity of its own international product. For now, at least, they have kicked that decision down the road and will continue to mull the situation over. Buttler’s Gujarat Titans top the IPL table, meaning he is highly likely to be at the centre of the dilemma, while Will Jacks (Mumbai Indians) and Jacob Bethell (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) could also find themselves in the same situation. Jofra Archer and Jamie Overton are with teams who cannot reach the finals. “We’re keen to support the IPL and the BCCI in getting the schedule up and running, and to facilitate players’ return should they choose to go back,” said a spokesperson for the ECB. “No objection certificates have been granted based on the original IPL dates, so we’ll need to review any potential extensions, particularly in relation to any clash with the final white-ball squad. We’ll continue to work closely with the BCCI and the IPL as the situation develops.” England’s squad is strikingly similar to the one that underperformed at the Champions Trophy in February, Buttler’s last assignment in charge. Liam Livingstone and Phil Salt drop out, as does the injured Mark Wood, with Matthew Potts, Luke Wood, Tom Hartley and Jacks recalled. There is a notable return for left-arm spinner Liam Dawson, who is named in the T20 squad for another three-match series. The 35-year-old last played for England in 2022 but has become the most reliable slow bowler on the county circuit, also playing BBL for Melbourne Stars. 10. Watch Live: Trump to speak at U.S.-Saudi investment summit today Watch Live: Trump to speak at U.S.-Saudi investment summit today President Trump is set to deliver remarks Tuesday at a U.S.-Saudi investment summit and will sign agreements for the Pentagon, Justice Department, FBI and other agencies to cooperate with their Saudi Arabian counterparts. Mr. Trump and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced multiple economic and defense agreements, an indication of Mr. Trump’s intent to deepen U.S.-Saudi ties, despite long-held concerns from State Department reports and human rights groups about its restriction of civil liberties and political rights. The president arrived in Saudi Arabia earlier Tuesday, the first stop on a four-day trip to the Middle East for Mr. Trump. The trip is his first of his second term. The president also visited Saudi Arabia before any other nation during his first term in the White House — bucking the tradition for presidents to make their first foreign trip to the United Kingdom, one of the United States’ strongest allies. After Air Force One was escorted into landing by Saudi fighter jets, Mr. Trump was greeted on the tarmac at the airport in Riyadh by the kingdom’s de facto ruler, the crown prince. After a coffee ceremony, Trump then went to the Royal Court, where he and bin Salman descended a lavender carpet as trumpets sounded to mark the president’s arrival. Following the arrival ceremony, the president attended a delegation meeting and bilateral meeting. Mr. Trump complimented the Crown Prince in remarks during their bilateral meeting, calling him “wise beyond his years.” The president also said that the Saudi prince is considering a purchase of $600 billion of military equipment but joked that it could be $1 trillion. The two leaders also participated in a business lunch with notable CEOs including Elon Musk, Larry Fink, and Stephen Schwarzman. Mr. Trump said the business leaders are expected to walk away from the visit “with a lot of checks.” Saudi Arabia is of key diplomatic importance to the Trump White House, especially amid ongoing efforts to negotiate a deal with Iran over its nuclear program, and with the Israel-****** war still raging in Gaza. The president and the crown prince held private talks earlier Tuesday which were expected to span a wide range of topics, from Iran’s nuclear program to the war in Gaza and keeping oil prices in check. But the visit also focused on business, as the president has looked to strengthen ties with the Middle East partner. And Joining Mr. Trump at the investment summit were expected to be some high-profile business leaders, including Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, Palantir’s Alex Karp, Citigroup’s Jane Fraser, BlackRock’s Larry Fink, Franklin Templeton Investments’s Jenny Johnson, Uber’s Dara Khosrowshahi, BDT & MSD Partners’ Dina Powell McCormick and Blackstone’s Steve Schwarzman, according to multiple sources familiar with the event. Later this week, Mr. Trump will travel to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Qatar has offered to donate a jumbo jet donated by the royal family of Qatar for Mr. Trump’s exclusive use as a presidential plane. Mr. Trump has defended accepting the gift of the plane, saying Monday “I could be a stupid person and say, oh no, we don’t want a free plane.” Gabrielle Ake and Jennifer Jacobs contributed to this report. 11. Bluetooth 6.1 Announced With Support for Enhanced Privacy, Better Battery Life Bluetooth 6.1 Announced With Support for Enhanced Privacy, Better Battery Life The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) recently announced the latest Bluetooth 6.1 standard, and it is designed to protect user privacy while using devices that offer support for the wireless connectivity protocol. New devices with Bluetooth 6.1 support could arrive by 2026, and could deliver improved power efficiency enabled by the latest standard. The Bluetooth SIG recently moved to a ***-annual release schedule, which means that we can expect the next version of Bluetooth to release in the second half of 2025. Bluetooth 6.1 Adds Randomised RPA Timing for Improved Privacy The latest Bluetooth 6.1 Core Specification announcement states that there are two notable changes to the wireless communication protocol. The first change will improve the privacy of devices that are connected using Bluetooth 6.1, while the other will improve battery life on devices that rely on the wireless communication protocol. Bluetooth 6 arrived last year with support for changing the MAC address of a device to protect user privacy, using a Resolvable Private Address (RPA). This is done at a fixed 15-minute interval, which could allow malicious users to track users by identifying the randomised address as it is generated. In order to resolve this issue, Bluetooth 6.1 adds support for randomised RPAs. As a result, the RPA is updated between 8 minutes and 15 minutes, and the value is picked randomly. This makes it much harder for a malicious user to track other Bluetooth devices, as it becomes difficult to predict when a device’s address will be randomised. You can read more about how Bluetooth 6.1 protects user privacy in the detailed document published by the Bluetooth SIG. The document also reveals another benefit that will be available on devices with Bluetooth 6.1 support. These randomised RPA requests will be handled by the wireless chip (controller) on devices that support Bluetooth connectivity, instead of relying on the processor. As a result, smaller devices like truly wireless stereo (TWS) headsets, fitness trackers, smartwatches, and portable speakers could offer better battery life. Customers might have to wait for several months before new devices arrive with support for Bluetooth 6.1. Meanwhile, the Bluetooth SIG recently announced that it has switched to a new ***-annual release schedule, which means the next version of Bluetooth should arrive by the end of 2025. 12. UWF President Martha Saunders ‘made the Pensacola community a better place to live’ UWF President Martha Saunders ‘made the Pensacola community a better place to live’ The principle, “Leave things better than you found them,” perfectly describes Martha Saunders’s tenure as president of the University of West Florida. Saunders, who has been UWF’s leader since 2017 and is the longest-serving president in the State University System, announced Monday, she was stepping down from the post. During her time as president, she championed the creation of more than 20 new academic programs, including offerings in cybersecurity, mechanical engineering and an Intelligent Systems and Robotics Ph.D. program in collaboration with the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition. To those who know and work with Saunders, she is so much more. “Dr. Saunders was an exceptionally fine administrator and equally fine academic. We both studied communication as a vocation, and she was exceptionally fine teacher,” recalled Jerry Maygarden, a former Pensacola mayor, city council member and member of the Florida House of Representatives. “We team taught a course last term, sharing the teaching load. She paid attention to detail and had a keen interest in the students. She is going to be tremendously missed by faculty, staff and students, I hope she will return to the faculty going forward but that remains to be seen.” University of West Florida: President Martha Saunders resigns Maygarden also noted the university’s enrollment growth under Saunders’s leadership. Defying national trends, UWF achieved record enrollment every year since 2021 − a 14% increase over the past five years. “We’re nearing 15,000 students, that’s larger than the University of Notre Dame in Indiana,” Maygarden said. “We’re in the Panhandle − an area not associated with a large population − surrounded by the state of Alabama and the Gulf of America, and still experienced steady growth with her as the leader.” Alonzie Scott, who serves on the UWF Board of Trustees, said Saunders will likely be remembered as one of the university’s best presidents. “I came on board almost seven years ago, and we’ve seen enrollment increase every year, not one year, but every year of Dr. Saunders’s presidency,” he said, echoing Maygarden. “We’ve also launched the engineering program, and our campus housing is in the 90th percentile for student occupancy – nationwide.” Scott also spoke about the growth of the university’s intercollegiate athletic programs, which are among the best in Division II. “She’s also hired exceptional faculty and staff members, who are focused on helping students get jobs when they graduate or become entrepreneurs,” Scott said, adding Saunders’ replacement will have some big shoes to fill. Some other UWF achievements under Saunders tutelage include: UWF becoming a top-performing public university in the Florida Board of Governors performance-based funding metrics Spearheaded the establishment of UWF’s Center for Cybersecurity Oversaw the development of Florida’s first bachelor’s in cybersecurity degree program designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity by the National Security Agency and U.S. Department of Homeland Security The launching of a civil engineering program this fall Construction of the Darrell Gooden Center, the Lab Sciences Annex and the Sandy Sansing Sports Medicine Center Ranking in the top 15 public regional institutions in the South by U.S. News and World Report Best Colleges for five consecutive years Multiple national military-friendly institution designations Grown UWF’s investment pool by 50%, providing financial stability and opportunities for future growth Under Saunders’s leadership, UWF also has met or exceeded every performance standard set by the state, said Sen. Don Gaetz. “UWF graduates have the best chance to obtain employment over any other higher education institution in the state. All of that is because of Martha Saunders’ commitment and capability. She leaves the University of West Florida in triumph,” Gaetz said. Scott agreed. “Whoever comes in behind Dr. Saunders, if they are not looking to raise the performance standards we have today or if any of these metrics drop, the community needs to hold them accountable because that person is not doing the job they’re supposed to be doing in the position,” said Scott, the first ****** senior executive in the 79-year history of the Office of Naval Research. Sandy Sansing, a UWF alum and supporter, said Saunders did a phenomenal job representing and leading UWF. “From the students, faculty and alumni, everyone I know totally loved and respected her for the job she did. I am so pleased for the wonderful way she improved every metrics that the state mandated and led UWF to the top,” Sansing said. Elizabeth Turner-Ward, a UWF alum and current graduate student, said Saunders fostered a community focused on excellence. “It’s a community where students from all walks of life felt welcomed into. It has been a community that pushed everyone to be their best together,” said Turner-Ward. “The types of programs Dr. Saunders pushed with high-impact practices and undergraduate research have made a significant impact on students’ careers and lives. I am grateful I’ve gotten to attend the university under her leadership, and I greatly admire her. She will be missed by the student body.” Turner-Ward said Saunders has shown great dignity during recent challenging situations. Saunders’ commitment to students’ success extended beyond UWF. Pensacola State College President Ed Meadows praised Saunders for assisting with the college’s Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Cybersecurity. “Before Martha become the UWF president, she was the vice president of academic affairs and she helped clear the path for us to receive approval for our bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity,” Meadows recalled, adding the two also worked together on several articulation agreements including the PSC2UWF Student Partnership Program. “I have always enjoyed Martha’s humor and wit, particularly in meetings with her and Pensacola Christian College president when we talked about how to be better partners in our community. Those meeting were always held with the goal of providing what is best for students, and I have always appreciated her for that.” Saunders made the Pensacola community a better place to live, Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves said. “Dr. Saunders didn’t just keep momentum at the UWF, she made an aspirational vision – higher performance, ******* enrollment and unprecedented success – a reality,” he said. “Her legacy will always be defined by success, strength and the fact that she ushered UWF to unprecedented heights.” Suzanne Lewis, a former UWF trustee who serve on the board for 14 years, said Saunders’ brought innovative programs to the university such as giving undergraduate students access to research studies and internships. “Giving students the opportunity to participate in internships in their fields of study improved their chances of being hired after graduation,” said Lewis, who added Saunders’ communication skills made her relatable to UWF students, faculty, staff and community members. “She was always responsive to the community. I think the community, as a whole, will show Martha their gratitude for all the things she has done,” Lewis said. Germany bans extremist movement and arrests self-declared ‘king’ Peter Germany bans extremist movement and arrests self-declared ‘king’ Peter Damien McGuinness BBC News in Berlin Reuters ******* police carried out a series of raids on Tuesday, arresting the leaders of the extreme-right Kingdom of Germany A self-declared “king” of Germany and three of his senior “subjects” have been arrested and their group banned for attempting to overthrow the state. Peter Fitzek, 59, was among those arrested in morning raids across seven states on Tuesday, which involved about 800 security personnel. The government banned their group, the Reichsbürger, or “citizens of the Reich”, which seeks to establish the Königreich Deutschland, or “Kingdom of Germany”. Alexander Dobrindt, *******’s interior minister, accused the group of attempting to “undermine the rule of law” by creating an alternative state and spreading “antisemitic conspiracy narratives to back up their supposed claim to authority”. His ministry announced the dissolution of the group, and accused it financing itself through “economic criminal structures”. Fitzek, a former chef and karate instructor, calls himself “king” and identified himself to judges as “Peter the First” in a previous court case. He had himself crowned in 2012 while dressed in ermine robes and brandishing a medieval sword. Since then he has been buying land and property across Germany. Reichsbürgers have their own currency, flag and ID cards, and want to set up separate banking and health systems. Fitzek claims to have thousands of followers – or “subjects”. In an interview with the BBC in 2022 he denied having any violent intentions, but also described the ******* state as “destructive and sick”. “I have no interest in being part of this fascist and satanic system,” he told the BBC’s Jenny Hill, when she visited his “kingdom” in eastern Germany. Fitzek has repeatedly clashed with the authorities and refused to abide by ******* laws, often in what appears to be in a publicity-seeking manner. Self-declared king Fitzek told the BBC he had no interest in modern Germany He has previously been jailed for repeatedly driving without a licence, following a decision to hand his back in a symbolic rejection of the law. At the end of one trial session, Fitzek was seen getting into his car in front of the court and driving off. Fitzek is one of around 25,000 Reichsbürger in Germany. Numbers have been growing over the last few years. Many are right-wing extremists who peddle racist and antisemitic conspiracy theories. They refuse to recognise the authority of security forces and many possess ******** arms, which has led to shoot-outs with police. Officials say that around 2,500 are potentially violent and that 1,350 are classed as right-wing extremists. In 2022 dozens of people were arrested, many of them Reichsbürger, for plotting to overthrow the ******* government in Berlin. They were accused of planning a violent coup, which included kidnapping the health minister, to create “civil war conditions” to bring down ******* democracy. In the past, Reichsbürger were often dismissed as eccentric cranks because of their outlandish ideas. But as the far right has grown in strength politically in Germany over the last decade, officials now see them as a serious threat. The federal prosecutor’s office in Karlsruhe said Fitzek was arrested along with three other suspected ringleaders of the group, which it classified as a criminal organisation. As the “so-called supreme sovereign”, Fitzek had “control and decision-making power in all key areas”, the office said. “The ‘Kingdom of Germany’ considers itself a sovereign state within the meaning of international law and strives to extend its claimed ‘national territory’ to the borders of the ******* Empire of 1871,” it added in a statement. 16. Pro-Gaza streamer detained for hours at US airport Pro-Gaza streamer detained for hours at US airport Popular streamer Hasan ****** claims he was detained for hours by US airport officials over his political views. The influencer, who has more than six million followers across Twitch, Instagram, TikTok and X, says he was held when he returned to Chicago from France. Mr ******, who is known for his pro-Gaza stance and criticism of Donald Trump, says he was quizzed on his views about the Middle East and the president and accused the US government attempting to silence opposition voices with intimidation. Officials rejected suggestions Mr ****** had been targeted over his beliefs during the “routine and lawful” inspection. Mr ****** first posted on Sunday, telling followers he had been stopped by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. On Monday, the US-born streamer told followers: “It was an insane situation, it’s very obvious that they knew exactly who I was. “It’s very obvious that they knew how to navigate the conversation and it was a really interesting conversation that took place. “It was very cordial… I thought it was strange how cordial it was.” But US government official Tricia McLaughlin accused Mr ****** of “lying for likes”. In a post on X, she said the “routine” inspection could have happened to anyone travelling. “Claims that his political beliefs triggered the inspection are baseless,” she wrote. “Once his inspection was complete, he was promptly released.” In a further statement, CBP said: “Our officers are following the law, not agendas,” adding that Mr ****** was “promptly released” once the inspection was complete. Mr ****** questioned this response, inquiring why he was asked about his views on Donald Trump, Israel, Houthi rebels, ****** and his bans from Twitch. BBC Newsbeat has asked the US Department of Homeland Security for a response. Mr ****** accused the government of attempting to create “an environment of fear” in an effort to silence critics. His experience follows the detention of student protesters Mahmoud Khalil and Rümeysa Öztürk by US immigration officials. Both were taken into custody after expressing pro-Palestine views, as part of what the White House has called a crackdown on anti-semitism on US college campuses. Opponents have accused the government of attempts to suppress free speech, and Mr Khalil’s lawyers have rejected claims he was promoting anti-semitism. The White House has said it is “committed to the enforcement of our immigration laws and will take swift action to remove aliens who pose serious adverse foreign policy consequences for the United States”. 17. How DOGE Cuts Are Impacting Food Banks and Schools Across Mississippi How DOGE Cuts Are Impacting Food Banks and Schools Across Mississippi The Mississippi Food Network in Jackson, MS, distributes more than 30 million pounds of food a year and feeds more than 150,000 people each month. But recent federal funding cuts, however, put their mission at risk as well as the work of many others throughout the state. “We lost a lot, several loads of food over a length of time,” said Cassandra Mobley, Chief Operating Officer of the Food Network. Earlier this year, the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, made massive cuts to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a move Mobley told CBN News will affect residents in the state with the second-highest food insecurity in the nation. “Donations have been down,” Mosley explained. “Need has been high. We actually distributed 22.3 million meals in 2023, and in 2024, it was up to 25.7. We expect that to be even more this year for 2025.” The USDA supplies the network with funds for its emergency food assistance programs, which provide truckloads of protein, dry foods, and other goods. “We’re accustomed to getting over 2 million pounds of food in every month and 2 million pounds going out, through the federal programs, through donations, through purchasing,” said Mobley. Other areas in the state government have also been hit hard, including state health agencies and school districts. The state’s education system is losing more than $137 million in federal funds after the U.S. Department of Education halted access to pandemic-era grant money – funds that were originally expected to last through 2026. Schools across the state had been spending the money for literacy, math programs and other projects. In 2024, Mississippi was ranked the second least educated state in the country. Many say help is needed now more than ever. Russ Nelson, principal at Saint Richard Catholic School, was shocked by the cuts. The school had received COVID-related money. “It happened in the middle of a school year,” Nelson said in an interview with CBN News. “We had new technology coming in, we had new iPads, new MacBooks for the teachers, and all that’s gone that we thought was going to be here already.” The state’s Republican Governor Tate Reeves told CBN News that while he understands the pain felt across the state, drastic measures are needed to rein in the federal budget. “We’ve got to find ways to balance the budget,” said Reeves. “And so, I certainly commend the president, his new administration in trying to do that because if we don’t, our financial system and financial situation is going to become an existential crisis in our country. And so, we’ve got to try to navigate our way through it.” Meanwhile, the Mississippi Food Network, schools, and other groups are seeking alternative funding sources to meet the critical needs across the state. 20. EU to tighten sanctions on Russia if no progress on Ukraine this week EU to tighten sanctions on Russia if no progress on Ukraine this week BERLIN (Reuters) – The European Union is ready to impose tougher sanctions on Russia if progress on ending the war in Ukraine is not made this week, ******* Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Tuesday, adding a new package of sanctions was prepared. “We are waiting for (Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s agreement and we agree that if there is no real progress this week, we want to work together at European level for a significant tightening of sanctions,” Merz said at a news conference with his Greek counterpart. “We will be looking at other areas, such as the energy sector and also the financial market,” he said. Merz said EU leaders had agreed with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy that he could take part in talks with Russia in Istanbul this week on the condition that Russian bombardment and attacks on civilians in Ukraine must stop. While saying he admired Zelenskiy’s willingness to compromise if it could help a ceasefire, Merz added: “I believe more compromise and more concessions are no longer reasonable,” said Merz. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the EU must be at the centre of any peace settlement. The news was first reported by The New York Times. Further testing would be needed to determine if a nodule points to prostate ******* or is benign, meaning noncancerous. “Prostate ******* may present as a prostate nodule (hard feeling area on the prostate) or elevated PSA test and often results in ordering an MRI and prostate biopsy,” Dr. Herbert Lepor, urologist at NYU Langone told CBS News in an emailed statement. 22. U.K. Retail Giant M&S Says Customer Data Was Compromised in Cyberattack U.K. Retail Giant M&S Says Customer Data Was Compromised in Cyberattack Marks & Spencer, the large British retailer, said on Tuesday that some customer data had been stolen in a cyberattack last month, an incident that has left the company unable to process online orders for weeks. In an email to customers, M&S said that while some personal data, potentially including contact details and dates of birth, may have been accessed during the attack, there was no evidence that it had been shared. No card or payment details nor account passwords were compromised, the email said. M&S, which reported more than 13 billion British pounds (roughly $17.2 billion) in annual revenue in the year ending in March 2024, reported the incident to government and law enforcement officials. The disclosure followed recent attacks on other British retailers. In late April, Harrods experienced brief disruptions, restricting internet access at its sites as a security measure. Co-op, another British retailer, reported that a cyberattack last month caused limited impact to some back office and call center services. Ransom attacks, which sometimes aim to disrupt services in addition to stealing customer data, have been increasing in frequency and severity. In recent years, hospitals have been crippled by attacks, including in Britain last year, when hospitals had to cancel more than 800 planned operations, and 700 outpatient appointments needed to be rescheduled, including 97 ******* treatments, in the first week after the incident. It remained unclear who perpetrated the attacks and if they were connected. Britain’s National Cyber Security Center said in a statement this month that it was working with the affected companies. “These incidents should act as a wake-up call to all organizations,” said Richard Horne, the agency’s chief executive. He urged companies to ensure they had appropriate measures in place to prevent future attacks. The National Cyber Security Center was working to understand the nature of the attacks and to provide counsel to the sector. Carney to unveil cabinet, with more than half expected to be new faces – National Carney to unveil cabinet, with more than half expected to be new faces – National Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to reveal his new cabinet in an overhaul that is expected to see a slate of senior and junior ministers, with more than 50 per cent of the MPs expected to be first-timers, sources tell Global News. Carney and his ministers will arrive at Rideau Hall Tuesday morning, with the ceremony to begin at 10:30 a.m. eastern. The cabinet, according to sources, will be separated into two groups. The first group will be made up of fewer than 30 senior ministers, holding portfolios including foreign affairs, defence and the minister poised to lead negotiations with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. The second cabinet group will consist of up to 10 junior ministers, roles the government plans to call “secretaries of state” but which in the past have been formally appointed as “ministers of state to assist,” according to federal records. 24. UnitedHealth Group CEO Andrew Witty steps down UnitedHealth Group CEO Andrew Witty steps down Andrew Witty, CEO of UnitedHealth Group, testifies during the Senate Finance Committee hearing titled “Hacking America’s Health Care: Assessing the Change Healthcare Cyber Attack and What’s Next,” in the Dirksen Building in Washington, D.C., on May 1, 2024. Tom Williams | Cq-roll Call, Inc. | Getty Images UnitedHealth Group on Tuesday announced the surprise exit of CEO Andrew Witty and suspended its 2025 forecast, sending shares of the healthcare giant tumbling nearly 10% in premarket trading. Witty is stepping down immediately for “personal reasons,” the company said. He will act as a senior advisor to his successor, Stephen Hemsley, who served as UnitedHealth Group’s CEO from 2006 to 2017 after first joining the company in 1997. “We are grateful for Andrew’s stewardship of UnitedHealth Group, especially during some of the most challenging times any company has ever faced,” Hemsley said in a release. The company said its decision to pull its guidance was partly due to higher medical costs, which dragged down other insurance stocks. Shares of both CVS Health dropped nearly 3% and shares of Elevance Health fell more than 3%, while Humana‘s stock slid more than 2% and shares of Cigna lost more than 1%. Witty became CEO of UnitedHealth in 2021 after previously running British pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline for nearly a decade. He oversaw a tumultuous last year for the company, which grappled with government investigations, a historic cyberattack, higher-than-expected medical costs and the torrent of public blowback after the ******* of Brian Thompson, the CEO of the company’s insurance unit UnitedHealthcare. Witty in December publicly acknowledged that the U.S. health system is “flawed” and needs reform, but also defended UnitedHealthcare. UnitedHealth Group on Tuesday said it partly suspended the outlook because the medical costs for new enrollees in the company’s private Medicare plans remained higher than expected. The company also said “care activity continued to accelerate while also broadening to more types of benefit offerings than seen in the first quarter.” It comes just weeks after UnitedHealth Group slashed its annual profit forecast, warning of elevated medical costs in so-called Medicare Advantage plans. Those higher expenses have dogged the entire insurance industry over the past year as more seniors return to hospitals to undergo procedures they had delayed during the Covid-19 pandemic, such as joint and hip replacements. The company in April also posted its first earnings miss since 2008, and the ensuing stock decline erased nearly $190 billion in market capitalization at the time. But investors may welcome the return of Hemsley, who oversaw the company’s transformation into a $400 billion healthcare conglomerate that controls everything from the nation’s largest private insurer to one of the biggest pharmacy benefit managers, along with physician groups and sensitive health-care data of millions of Americans. “UnitedHealth Group has tremendous opportunities to grow as we continue to help improve health care and to perform to our potential — and, in so doing, return to our long-term growth objective of 13 to 16 percent,” Hemsley said. The company expects to return to growth in 2026, according to the release. Source link #UnitedHealth #Group #CEO #Andrew #Witty #steps Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
