But as of August 2023, the City of Montreal encourages citizens to bring their own mattresses to Ecocentric (or call a company to pick them up), where their components will be separated and recycled.
Recycling mattresses helps to divert bulky waste from landfills, where they would otherwise take up significant space and contribute to environmental issues. In Canada, Canadians dispose of over six million mattresses each year. Compared to other garbage in the landfill, mattress occupies 400% more space. It will also take a mattress 80 to 120 years before they are fully decomposed, and if they do decompose they will release toxic chemicals into the atmosphere.
Furthermore, because of their size, mattresses will wear down landfill equipment. Recycling your mattress will also conserve resources by reusing materials that would otherwise require new resources to produce.
The mattress recycling process will begin when it reaches a recycling centre where they are sorted according to type (i.e. foam or innerspring). The mattresses are then torn apart and disassembled to separate their various components. The components of a mattress which can be recycled or repurposed include:
Metal coils. Metal coils make up the springs in mattresses. They are usually made of steel. Steel can be melted down and used to create new products, including appliances and cars. The metal coils can also be used in the production of new mattresses.
Wood box springs: The wood can be chipped down and used to make mulch for landscaping or as fuel for energy generation.
Fabrics: Mattresses are made of multiple fabrics, including cotton and polyester. These fabrics are shredded into smaller pieces, which can be processed and used to create new items, including insulation or even new textiles.
Foam: Foam from the inside of mattresses can be shredded and reused as insulation, carpet padding, or animal bedding.
Other components like plastics or adhesives will be separated and sent for processing at local waste facilities.
Montreal is also hoping to expand these projects to include furniture recycling, as hard-to-give-away items like sofas or chairs also tend to find their way into the landfill. The City of Montreal is also looking at ways of setting up pickups for mattresses so that citizens do not have to bring them to eco centres themselves.
While recycling mattresses is beneficial, it’s important to note that not all recycling facilities accept mattresses due to their size and complexity. Checking with local recycling programs or waste management services can provide guidance on how to properly recycle a mattress in your area.
Although I am surprised that it took until last year for the City of Montreal to come up with a recycling plan for mattresses, it is an important step forward to reducing landfill waste and our environmental footprint. It goes to show that with time and expertise, everyday items like your mattress can be recycled. Blue Carbon Ambassador participants will also delve into the field of regenerative ocean aquaculture, an innovative approach to ocean “farming” that aims to restore coastal habitats while generating both economic and ecological benefits. Esports is one of the fastest-growing industries on the planet. Thanks to the vast range of video game titles across different genres hosting competitive tournament systems, it’s drawn millions of viewers worldwide. In turn, these loyal fanbases paved the way for lucrative marketing opportunities and profitable ventures through sponsorships and merchandise sales.
With leading online platforms like YouTube and Twitch making esports even more accessible, it only continues to attract more players and viewers over time—which is why it’s no surprise that the value of this market is expected to grow from roughly $2 billion to $10 billion between now and 2032.
All this makes esports one of the best sectors for conducting sustainability initiatives, especially with more gamers now wanting developers to go green. YouGov recently surveyed players from more than a dozen countries and found that over 48% of them are willing to pay more for sustainable gaming consoles alone. Given just how reliant esports are on other modern technologies—many of which have a significant environmental impact—there’s definitely room for the industry to become more sustainable while simultaneously retaining and attracting more followers.
But how can it get started? Below, we’ll ***** deeper into how esports is currently going green and what else the industry can do to improve sustainability efforts.
Esports sustainability today

Competitive video gaming is, by nature, already more sustainable than traditional sports. Every year, the global sports industry emits a whopping 350 million tons of carbon dioxide due to the processes involved in running sports facilities, organizing events, and transporting athletes to compete there. In comparison, global video gaming activities—including esports—emit roughly 81 million tons annually. That means it consumes as much energy as over 5 million cars. Given the similarities between esports and its traditional counterparts, including the hosting of physical tournaments that require teams to travel there, it’s a significant contributor to that carbon footprint. Growing industry awareness of this issue has led to the following efforts.
Internal initiatives
Change often needs to start at the source. That’s why gaming developers themselves now use environment, social, and governance (ESG) principles for the benefit of investors, stakeholders—and, more importantly, consumers clamoring for sustainability. That’s clearly seen through the efforts of Activision Blizzard, a company best known for developing the popular esports title Call of Duty. Though first introduced in 2003, this game is still considered the best in the first-person shooter genre today because Activision keeps it relevant by regularly releasing new updates and franchises.
That’s led to the creation of a vibrant esports tournament system. Here, famous teams like Atlantic FaZe and Toronto Ultra can compete in everything from pre-season kickoffs to championship events, and spectators can bet on Call of Duty match outcomes using either fiat or cryptocurrencies to enhance the viewing experience. Today, Activision uses internal sustainability initiatives to cater to changing consumer demand and ultimately maintain Call of Duty’s loyal fanbase. Its ESG reports reveal that its decarbonization roadmap has helped it reduce water consumption, waste production, and overall carbon emissions while developing and updating games, with more than 61% of its operations now running on renewable energy.
Team participation
Esports teams are the focal point of the industry. Professional players are the reason why matches are so exciting, making them the key factor that attracts everything from fans to sponsorship deals. They’re thus crucial for raising awareness of the environmental impact of esports. That’s what makes teams like FlyQuest stand out. It’s one of the biggest organizations to play League of Legends tournaments, which are already among the most followed in the industry thanks to unique mechanics like barring previous champions from competitions to facilitate more diverse and unpredictable outcomes.
By launching the Go Green Initiative in 2019, Flyquest is now also known for being one of the first teams to act on the issue of sustainability. It kickstarted the initiative with TreeQuest, which involved planting trees whenever its players hit milestones during games. That led to them planting more than 5,000 trees in a single League of Legends season. They’ve since launched similar programs under Go Green, including Bee Quest and SeaQuest. All these efforts aim to bring together not just team members, but wider esports communities, helping the industry respond to sustainability in the moment while simultaneously giving environmental issues further exposure within esports circles.
Carbon offsetting
Given the importance of travel in conducting esports tournaments, it’s no wonder that esports organizations are also working to minimize their carbon emissions as they participate in major industry events. One of the first to do so directly is Betclic Apogee, a team most active in Counter-Strike and EAFC tournaments. Its partnership with the carbon credit company ZEROCertified allows it to track and offset its emissions as its members travel to competitions.

Though the above initiatives are great stepping stones on the esports industry’s road to sustainability, there’s still much more it can do to bolster its efforts. Primarily, this will involve the similarities it shares with traditional sports, such as the resources it uses to train, compete, and partner with companies.
Improved equipment
The digital device use necessary for esports training and tournaments does more than consume significant amounts of energy. The processes involved in producing high-end gaming computers alone include the mining of rare metals and the creation of petroleum-based plastics, and that can contribute to the industry’s overall environmental impact. That’s why teams and event organizers may want to consider switching to more eco-friendly equipment.
Though looking for components with ENERGY STAR certifications can help, leveraging used electronics marketplaces like Reebelo may better promote a circular economy and aid in reducing the demand for device production altogether. Such platforms use rigorous vetting processes in curating a network of vendors that offer pre-loved electronics, allowing even esports organizations looking for niche equipment to find devices that fit their requirements.
Greener venues
Further efforts can involve how the industry organizes tournaments themselves. Selecting a green venue can help make a difference by making it easier for everyone involved in an event to lower their carbon footprints. Some key features esports event organizers can look for in such venues include the use of renewable energy to power lights and equipment, as well as the provision of transportation options to esports teams and audience members. It can also involve conducting carbon accounting during venue construction, which can help facilitate more effective carbon offsetting.
Thoughtful partnerships
One final consideration the industry makes ***** in the methods it uses to stay financially viable—namely, through brand deals and merchandise sales. Major tournaments like the Esports World Cup, for example, are still sponsored by the likes of Aramco, one of the biggest names in the petroleum industry. The production of clothes and other items that fans can purchase can also use a significant amount of water and energy, produce waste, and ultimately release compounds like microplastics into the environment. Notably, most esports team jerseys use non-biodegradable materials like polyester.
By more thoughtfully selecting the entities they partner with, event organizers and esports teams can indirectly support greener initiatives and give avid viewers the opportunity to grab more sustainable merchandise. For instance, they can forge deals with tech companies like Logitech, which uses circular materials for its devices and packaging—or dedicated esportswear brands like YLDR and FUSH, which both use recycled polyester in their apparel.

Identifying species in your city with the City Nature Challenge
This past April, iNaturalist, an app that helps people identify plants and animals, launched their annual City Nature Challenge. The City Nature Challenge began in 2016 as a competition between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The goal was for participants to find and document any wildlife they found in the areas.
The competition has expanded to cities all around the world. From two cities and one country participating, the City Nature Challenge now has 690 cities and 51 countries that participate in the challenge.
Participants are tasked with finding wildlife, including plants, animals, or evidence of life in their city. They take a picture of what they find and share it through the iNaturalist platform. This massive data collection effort helps scientists gather valuable information on local species, their distribution, and ecological trends. The data can be used for research, conservation planning, and tracking biodiversity changes over time.
What is great about the City Nature Challenge is that anyone can participate. You can participate alone or with your family, as a class with students, or even help your city participate in the challenge.
Between April 26 and April 29, 2024, 2,436,844 observations were made across the globe. The app recorded over 65,000 species and close to 4,000 rare/endangered/threatened species. With over 83,000 participants, La Paz, Bolivia, earned the top spots for most observations (165,839), most species (5352) and most participants (3593). Following La Paz, for most observations, were Monterrey, Mexico and San Antonio, Texas.
Some notable findings from this year’s challenge include the Taiwan Thrush, which was found in Central Taiwan. It’s a rare bird endemic to Tawain, and only one was seen/recorded in this year’s Challenge. Another single observation was the Dingy Purplewing, which was found in South Florida and is a rare butterfly in this state. An Indri was found in Madagascar, one of the largest living lemurs and a critically endangered species. A Baird’s Tapir was captured on a camera trap in Peten, Guatemala. It is an endangered species due to the loss of its habitat. Many more interesting observations can be found on the City Nature Challenge website.
What’s important about the City Nature Challenge is that it highlights the biodiversity that exists in urban environments, which is often overlooked in favour of more natural settings. By engaging the public, the Challenge fosters a deeper connection between people and their local environment, helping them realize that nature is all around, even in cities.
The City Nature Challenge brings together people from different backgrounds, including schools, community groups, scientists, and nature enthusiasts, to work toward a common goal. This sense of community can inspire collective action for local environmental issues and foster a shared sense of responsibility for protecting urban nature.
By spotlighting local species and their habitats, the Challenge can spur interest in conservation and lead to initiatives aimed at protecting urban wildlife and green spaces. This is crucial for maintaining biodiversity in cities, where development often threatens natural habitats.

Colour in Climate – Empowering Women and BIPOC Activists: A Gathering to Champion Climate Change Leadership

Nicole Doray, alongside Grace Swain and Urshian Khalid, champions inclusivity for environmental and social activists in the GTA*, with a focus on women and BIPOC communities. Their idea, the Colour in Climate that will be held in Spring 2024, spotlights climate justice work led by marginalized groups, fostering celebration and solidarity.
Nicole, drawing from personal experiences, critiques conventional climate events as lacking community-building and often tokenizing BIPOC attendees. Her vision? A space where activists of colour feel valued for their contributions, free from tokenism and formalities.
“We wanted to create a space for folks to feel nurtured without needing to be of service, recognized without being tokenized, and connected in community without needing to validate their work or prove that they deserve to be in this space,” Nicole Doray, Feb. 2024.
Their innovative approach involves co-creating the event with activists, ensuring inclusivity from the ground up. By collaborating with leaders from various sectors and age groups, they aim to represent the diverse voices driving social and climate change.
Despite the buzz surrounding their initiative, challenges emerged. Coordinating with 50 to 60 leaders meant navigating conflicting feedback. A notable example was their effort to provide professional headshots, acknowledging the importance of diverse representation while addressing concerns of exploitation.
They knew this was the right step as they guided themselves by their north star: “whatever leaves attendees feeling included, appreciated, celebrated, and loved. So, every decision that we make, including the way we consult attendees, is made with that as the goal.” Nicole Doray, Feb. 2024.
As they forge ahead, Nicole and her team remain committed to meeting their community’s needs. Beyond mere networking, their goal is to foster genuine connections, believing impactful
work stems from mutual understanding and compassion. As Nicole put it, “some of the best work evolves from people feeling genuinely connected and accountable to each other.” Building genuine relationships is the main goal of the event; “any work that emerges from those relationships will be a ‘cherry on top’.”
To realize their vision, securing funding was paramount. They sought grants aligning with their values, prioritizing justice, inclusion, and flexibility. The Youth Harbour Assembly Grant, with its accommodating application process and emphasis on diversity, proved instrumental.
With the event garnering community support, Nicole anticipates its realization as a testament to genuine collaboration. Their inclusive approach sets a precedent for organizations, urging them to prioritize diverse voices and needs.
Looking forward, Nicole challenges other organizations to prioritize the well-being of marginalized team members, recognizing their vital role in driving climate and social justice efforts.
“I would challenge them to ask their team members, especially women and non-binary team members of ******, what would make them feel most supported, uplifted, and nurtured as we head into yet another year of intense climate and social justice action,” Nicole proposed.

With weather patterns in the *** gradually changing, the importance of conserving water is becoming even more pressing – and the right water management systems can help you do it.
Opt for Permeable Paving Solutions
One of the inherent problems with paving materials is that they cause water to sit on the surface, rather than soaking into the earth. In urban parts of the ***, this has led to flooding. By installing alternatives, like gravel, and planning your drainage system meticulously, you can minimise this problem.
Choose Eco-Friendly Driveway and Pathway Options
Driveways and pathways, in particular, benefit from permeable paving solutions. Driveway block paving tends to be specially formulated to withstand the weight and impact of vehicles, while still allowing moisture to seep through into the earth below.
Use Recycled and Sustainable Materials
The materials you use matter. Where those materials have been manufactured from scratch, they’ll impose a burden on the natural world. If they’ve been reclaimed, repurposed, or otherwise recycled, then this environmental cost will be lower.
Some materials are also inherently more environmentally friendly than others. Bamboo, which grows very quickly, is more environmentally friendly than oak, and other rarer species of hardwood.
Create Green Living Spaces
The more green space you can incorporate into your outdoor living area, the better. Greenery has a proven positive impact on mental health for nearby human beings. Wall-mounted ‘vertical gardens’, which basically consist of a grid of suspended plant pots, help to not only make the home look great – they can also help to insulate it.

Conservationists celebrate as they release the 1,000th captive-bred Florida Grasshopper Sparrow to the wild.
In a remarkable turnaround for a species once teetering on the brink of extinction, the critically endangered Florida Grasshopper Sparrow has achieved a significant milestone in its recovery. This week, conservationists celebrated the release of the 1,000th captive-bred bird back into the wild, marking a pivotal moment in a decades-long struggle to save this tiny avian species.
The Florida Grasshopper Sparrow, a diminutive bird standing just 5 inches tall, is endemic to the prairie regions of central Florida. Its population has experienced a dramatic decline over the past half-century, primarily due to habitat loss and degradation. In the 1970s, the sparrow inhabited seven counties across central Florida. By the early 2000s, its range had shrunk to just three counties, with population estimates dropping from thousands to mere hundreds.
The situation became dire by 2015, with surveys indicating that fewer than 50 birds remained in the wild. Faced with imminent extinction, conservationists made the bold decision to remove the remaining breeding pairs from their natural habitat. This captive breeding program was a calculated risk, ******** that controlled repopulation would prove more effective than leaving the birds to fend for themselves in increasingly fragmented and degraded habitats.
Adrienne Fitzwilliam, the lead sparrow research scientist at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s research institute, reflected on the decision: “The recovery and release program diverted the extinction of the Florida Grasshopper Sparrow.” She acknowledged the initial uncertainty, noting, “The ***** was we might just be expediting their demise by bringing in proven breeders.”
The program initiated releases in 2019 across three sites, with additional locations designated for monitoring. Birds are typically released at around 40 days old and quickly establish territories in their new environment. Researchers diligently observe the released birds, a challenging task given the sparrows’ well-camouflaged nests and secretive nature.
Recent data from the Avon Park military range, where the 1,000th bird was released, shows promising results. Researchers have recorded 16 nesting pairs and 30 unpaired males seeking mates this year. Even more encouraging are the numbers from the Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area, the program’s initial release site. Once home to just 11 pairs, it now boasts 40 pairs and 68 males, with the breeding season still ongoing.
While scientists caution that the Florida Grasshopper Sparrow population isn’t yet stable enough to declare the species saved, these numbers represent a significant step forward. Fitzwilliam emphasized, “These numbers mean released birds successfully survive, breed and raise young in the wild, which is a huge success. It has diverted extinction and allows partners to research possible landscape-level solutions.”
The grasshopper sparrow’s diet consists primarily of grasshoppers and seeds, highlighting its important role in the ecosystem. As both a predator of insects and a prey species for larger birds and small mammals, the sparrow plays a crucial part in the food web of Florida’s prairies. Its presence or absence can serve as an indicator of overall ecosystem health.
The recovery of the Florida Grasshopper Sparrow has potential ripple effects throughout its habitat. By maintaining healthy populations of grasshoppers and other insects, the sparrow helps control pest populations that could otherwise damage native plants. Additionally, as a ground-nesting bird, its success or ******** can indicate the health of the understory vegetation and the effectiveness of land management practices.
Over the years, the conversion of prairie habitats to agricultural land has severely reduced the Florida Grasshopper Sparrow’s range and numbers. The birds now rely on isolated and protected areas, including restricted military ranges, for nesting and foraging. This habitat fragmentation impacts the sparrow and numerous other species that depend on Florida’s unique prairie ecosystems.
The FWC is collaborating with partners such as Audubon, White Oak Conservation, and the Fish and Wildlife Foundation of Florida to explore land management practices that could benefit the species and its ecosystem. One such technique is roller chopping, which prepares land for controlled burns and promotes faster regeneration of native grasses. Researchers are monitoring nest success in roller-chopped areas to determine if this treatment reduces cover for predators, a major threat to sparrow nests.
This conservation effort demonstrates that even species on the brink of extinction can be brought back from the edge with targeted intervention and sustained commitment. As climate change and habitat loss continue to threaten wildlife globally, the success of the Florida grasshopper sparrow provides a glimmer of hope and a model for future conservation efforts.
The recovery of this tiny bird is more than just a victory for a single species; it represents the resilience of nature when given a chance to rebound. As the Florida grasshopper sparrow reclaims its place in the prairie ecosystem, it serves as a living testament to the importance of biodiversity conservation and the potential for human intervention to make a positive impact on the natural world.
