Happy Eco News Beach TLC Stations: Clean Up Beaches in Your Area

Beach TLC stations are being provided to help people easily take part in cleaning their local beaches.
On one of my most recent trips to California, I visited the Muir Beach near San Francisco and the Muir Woods National Monument. The beach was beautiful, and although it was too cold to swim, it was very pleasant to walk on the sand. The beach is a fairly popular location and allows **** owners to bring their dogs, but one thing I did notice was how clean it was.
Upon leaving the beach, I noticed something interesting (and a possible answer to how the beach was kept so clean). A box called “Beach TLC Station” was by the beach’s entrance. Inside the box were reusable bags designed to clean up garbage. The instructions of the beach TLC were simple: you would take a repurposed bag from the box, pick up trash on and around the beach, report on what you picked up (more on that in a bit), empty out the contents into the nearest garbage can, and place the bag back in the bin for someone else to use. The last step was to celebrate for doing an important job.
The All One Ocean organization makes the Beach TLC Stations possible. Their mission is to educate communities about garbage’s impact on our oceans and waterways and provide simple and sustainable ways to reduce our impact on the ocean environment. All One Ocean has Beach TLC Stations in three states: California, Hawaii, and Iowa, and they are always looking for new locations to implement these stations. All One Ocean will set up all the boxes and the necessary signage but rely on volunteers within those communities to ensure the boxes are equipped with bags.
The Beach TLC Stations are a practical way to ensure that cleanup is happening daily on the beaches. What’s great about these stations is that they are not just for beaches. Communities can also request installing them in watersheds, lakeshores, schools, and trails. All to keep our local environments clean. All One Ocean encourages users to take pictures of what they collect and post them on their website or social media accounts. Sharing these photos is important to show and share what kind of garbage is being found on the beach and create a connection between everyone contributing to this program.
All One Ocean has other programs dedicated to keeping the oceans and water clean. They organize beach cleanups with companies, families, and schools. What makes their beach cleanups unique is that they focus on education and outreach. A beach cleanup with All One Ocean includes lessons on local ecosystems, habitats, and environments and can include engagement activities for schools and student groups.
Another program they offer is Ocean Warriors, where they teach the youth about the environment, pollution, and water contamination and help them build the necessary skills to become environmental advocates. They also empower schools and youth groups to reduce waste in their communities and help them work towards creating a cleaner world.
All One Ocean’s efforts to clean up our oceans and waterways are impressive and admirable. And they make cleaning up easy, fun and rewarding. Providing beach visitors with the tools to do their part and clean up the beach actually makes people want to do their part. And it really makes you feel like you are part of a community making a change. I actually wish Muir Beach hadn’t been so clean the day I visited because I would have loved to contribute to this program. It’s little efforts like this that will help to keep our earth clean for generations to come.

The UC Berkeley study’s findings align with similar research conducted by the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, which found EVs do reduce pollution and a correlation between increased EV adoption and improved air quality across California between 2013 and 2019.
Looking ahead, the impact of EV adoption is expected to grow. Henry Ng, a climate scientist at Stanford University, predicts, “In ten years, we may see a dramatic reduction in ‘spare-the-air’ days in the Bay Area. This could have significant positive implications for public health, particularly for those with respiratory issues.”
The high EV adoption rates in the Bay Area can be attributed to several factors, including strong environmental awareness among residents, supportive local policies, and the presence of numerous tech companies that have embraced and promoted EV technology.
The concurrent development of charging infrastructure is crucial to EV adoption in the Bay Area. As of 2024, the region boasts over 2,500 public charging stations, with plans to double this number by 2026. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has been instrumental in this expansion, offering grants to businesses and public entities for installing charging stations. Additionally, local building codes now require new construction to include EV-ready parking spaces, further supporting the transition to electric vehicles. The proof that EVs reduce pollution will only help accelerate this process.
The health implications of reduced emissions are significant and far-reaching. This summer, I visited Muir Woods National Monument in California. I was astonished not only by the size of the redwood trees but also by how somewhere so naturally beautiful can exist right at our fingertips. It was almost like walking through a scene in a ****** tale. Not to mention the significant environmental impact places like Muir Woods and other national parks have on our environment.
The Coastal Redwood trees that make up Muir Woods National Monument began growing over 20 million years ago when California was covered by a shallow sea. The average age of a redwood is between 600- 800 years old, with the oldest tree recorded at 1200 years old. They are the tallest of all living things in Muir Woods, reaching up to 258 feet. The further north you go, the ******* the trees, as they can reach up to 379 feet tall (74 times taller than the Statue of Liberty).
The redwoods play an important role in carbon, nutrient, and water cycling in the Muir Woods. They also help to support plant and animal life (e.g., slugs,white-tailed deer, salmon, bobcats, etc.) in these areas.
While we love to see redwoods healthy and alive, ***** trees also play an important role in the forest. Fallen trees help keep the soil moist by soaking up rainwater, releasing nutrients into the soil, creating fertile soil for young seedlings, and providing shelter for insects, amphibians, and mammals.
There is also an important relationship between the trees and Redwood Creek, one of California’s rare, free-flowing rivers. The redwoods depend on the creek for most of their water, and the trees reciprocate by keeping the gravel in the creek clean by stabilizing the soil. The redwoods also help maintain the temperature of the rivers. ***** trees that fall into Redwood Creek create pools and enrich the stream with nutrients. Notably, because the creek is surrounded by an undisturbed forest, constant clean water and cool temperatures, it is the perfect habitat for salmon. It is one of the last streams in California to have a native stock of salmon still.
Redwood trees also have a superpower in that they are ***** resistant. Their thick and fibrous bark is infused with a chemical called tannic acid, which keeps them safe from fires. An honourable mention also goes to John Muir, the park’s naturalist and conservationist who was famous for creating Yosemite National Park and worked tirelessly to increase awareness about the potential destruction of wildness in the ******* States.
It’s important that we visit these natural wonders and walk away knowing that we have a role to play in protecting them. Jelt was established in 2014 as a cause-driven business that manufactures wearables from recycled plastic. Jelt’s purpose is to domestically manufacture sustainable products that everyone needs.
Jelt is a certified B Corporation and a partner of 1% for The Planet. Our products are made in Montana and sourced domestically as often as possible.
In 2023, Jelt changed ownership from its original founder, Jen Perry to sibling duo, Andy and Amy Auble. Andy Auble is a Montana local who has experience bringing domestically made products to market. He owns two other companies, GlueTread and Proof Razors.
Amy is an expert in marketing for sustainable brands and owns a marketing agency, Alpine Start Media as well as a Podcast called The Sustainable Business Spotlight. The sibling duo made the perfect pair to keep Jelt a Montana owned and operated company with a focus on domestic manufacturing from recycled plastic.
Currently, Jelt has two products: a line of belts and a new Crossbody Bag.
Jelt belts and crossbody bags are both sewn in Montana. “Local production is a high priority for us. We love employing a local team to ensure that our products are the best you’ll ever wear,” said Jelt’s Co-owner, Amy.
Jelt Belts
Functional and socially impactful, Jelt elastic belts are made from recycled plastic bottles. Bottles are recycled into plastic flakes, melted into pellets that are then made into durable yarn. Lastly, the yarn is sewn into stretchy elastic webbing.
There are three styles of Jelt Belts: the Jelt original, the JeltX, and the Jelt Venture. Jelt belts are 100% vegan, low profile and elastic. They’re designed for comfort and durability. The belts also have a grippy inner gel so that they can be worn with pants without belt loops. “Our belts last for years and years, one of the many aspects that make them sustainable,” said Amy.

Jelt Cross Body Bags
As of July 2024, Jelt released a Cross Body Bag. This is Jelt’s first ever non-belt product made from recycled material.
“We won’t lie,” said Amy, “Making products in the ******* States is really hard. The labor costs more and it’s ******* to source materials. But it’s the right thing to do. Our bags may cost more than your mainstream crossbody bag, but they’re made from the best sustainable material on the market, sewn by some of the best sewers in Montana, and we’re really proud of that.”
“It’s important to us to continue to produce our products in Montana because it keeps our local jobs… local. It also allows us to keep a close eye on the quality of our products and ensures every bag is just right.” Amy continued.
These new cross body bags are made from the best outdoor material on the market. The material is called ECOPAK and is extremely durable and produced with the newest innovations in sustainability.
ECOPAK is the world’s only composite fabric made with 100% recycled fiber and film. Each yard up cycles about 20 plastic water bottles into durable technical textiles.
ECOPAK is manufactured at eco-friendly facilities powered by hydroelectric energy. Additionally, the material is produced without toxic solvents or VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) typically found in other recycled material products.
Although ECOPAK isn’t 100% manufactured in the US, it follows strict sustainability guidelines and there isn’t an ********* Made alternative on the market.
The rest of the bag is made of components that come from the US, including a Jelt branded tag, zippers, zipper pulls, and an adjustable strap.

Accepting the Presidential Federal Sustainability Award, Postmaster General and CEO Louis DeJoy remarked, “We are honored to receive this award as our team has built a great relationship with members of the Council on Environmental Quality and the Office of Clean Energy and Innovation and Implementation to build one of the world’s largest electric delivery vehicle fleets. In his first year in office, President Joe Biden issued an executive order directing the federal government to lead by example and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, including a 65 percent reduction in emissions by 2030. This ambitious goal is part of the 2021 Federal Sustainability Plan, which outlines strategies for increasing the efficiency of 300,000 federal buildings, transitioning the federal fleet of 600,000 vehicles to zero-emission, and powering all federal operations with 100 percent carbon-free electricity.
From over 140 nominees, awardees were selected for their exceptional contributions, representing domestic and international facilities or projects spanning 10 federal agencies.
Electrifying the Largest Federal Fleet
The Postal Service received the Presidential Federal Sustainability Award for its pioneering efforts in building one of the world’s largest electric delivery vehicle fleets, significantly advancing the goals of President Biden’s Federal Sustainability Plan. This initiative is expected to result in cleaner air, better health outcomes, and good-paying jobs in communities nationwide.
In December 2022, USPS announced its commitment to put 66,000 electric delivery trucks on the roads over the next five years. The Postal Service plans to make all purchases for its Next Generation Delivery Vehicle fleet electric starting in 2026, marking one of the largest commitments to vehicle electrification in the nation. This proactive approach means USPS voluntarily exceeds the federal fleet electrification requirements set out in President Biden’s Federal Sustainability Plan.
To support these electric vehicles, USPS is rapidly installing electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the nation. Currently, 14,000 charging ports are in progress, with installations expected to continue through 2028 at hundreds of facilities to support these vehicle purchases. Through these efforts, USPS is setting a benchmark for the federal government to advance the goal of electrifying the U.S. government’s 600,000 vehicles.

In a big project to make nature healthier and bring back more kinds of animals and plants, bison are coming back to Romania’s Carpathian Mountains after being gone for 200 years. This project is part of a ******* plan to bring back animals and plants that belong there and make the environment more balanced. One of the main goals is to make the land more like it used to be, with lots of plants and animals living together healthily.
Bringing back the bison isn’t just good for them—it’s also doing something really important for the environment. Since they came back, the bison have been helping the grasslands in the Carpathian Mountains capture and hold onto carbon dioxide. Researchers found out that by letting bison graze on about 48 square kilometres of grassland in a much ******* area of about 300 square kilometres, they’re able to grab an extra 54,000 tons of carbon every year. This is almost ten times more than what the land could do without the bison around.
The bison do many things to help keep the grasslands healthy. When they eat, they stop some plants from growing too much, making room for different plants to grow. Having lots of different plants helps capture more carbon because they all work in different ways to trap it in the ground. Plus, when the bison walk around, their hooves stir up the soil, which helps break down old plants and mix carbon into the dirt.
Healthier soil, enriched by the organic matter from plant roots and bison manure, becomes a more effective carbon sink. Enhanced plant growth, stimulated by the nutrient cycling driven by bison activities, further amplifies the carbon sequestration process. The combined effect of these ecological interactions results in a significant increase in the amount of CO2 removed from the atmosphere and stored in the ecosystem.
Scientists from the Yale School of the Environment in the ******* States have created a computer model aimed at precisely determining the quantity of atmospheric CO2 that wildlife species assist in capturing and storing. Drawing on fieldwork data, the model incorporates insights into how animals influence carbon absorption and retention within ecosystems. How They’re Introduced to New Environments
In most cases, invasive species are inadvertently introduced by human activities. The most common mode of spread is via transported goods loaded in ships that travel around the world. The products sometimes carry uninvited guests that are interpolated to an area by firewood, water, ship ballast and people unaware of their presence. Meanwhile, insects are often imported through crates, wood and shipping palettes that cruise from one country to another.
Several native fauna and flora communities are at risk of displacement due to flourishing alien species. One example is the tree of heaven — also known as varnish tree, ******** sumac or stinking sumac.

With Europe discarding millions of tons of garments annually, Czechia is implementing a compulsory textile recycling program to address environmental and landfill concerns. The Ministry of the Environment has announced plans to enforce compulsory textile waste collection as of 2025.
Textile waste recycling is becoming an increasingly pressing issue across Europe. An estimated 7 million tonnes of discarded clothing end up in landfills each year, which amounts to approximately 16kg of textile waste annually per person.
The production of garments consumes vast amounts of resources, such as water and energy, and contributes significantly to pollution through the use of chemicals and dyes. As the demand for fast fashion continues to rise, so does the volume of waste generated, creating a critical need for effective textile waste recycling management solutions.
In response to the mounting crisis of textile waste, the Czech Republic has taken a bold and pioneering step by implementing mandatory clothing recycling. Around 180,000 tonnes of textiles are discarded annually in Czechia. Of this waste, 39,000 tonnes are sorted for recycling, and 75,000 tonnes are sorted as non-recyclable and contaminated.
The mandatory textile waste recycling program will require citizens to separate their textile waste from other types of garbage, ensuring that clothing and fabric materials are diverted from landfills and directed toward recycling facilities.

Czechia already has approximately 10,000 textile collection points, but the existing Waste Act mandates only the collection, not the recycling, of these materials. The new scheme aims to increase the number of textile waste recycling collection points in inaccessible locations such as town halls and shops, similar to the existing infrastructure for batteries and electrical waste. This expansion will make it easier for people to participate in the recycling program and ensure that more textiles are properly processed and repurposed.
The program is designed to be user-friendly, with designated textile waste recycling collection bins placed in convenient locations throughout cities and towns. These bins will be easily accessible, encouraging widespread participation from the public. The collected textiles will then be sorted, processed, and either recycled into new materials or repurposed for other uses, such as insulation or industrial cleaning rags. This comprehensive approach aims to minimize the environmental footprint of discarded clothing while maximizing the utility of the materials.
