Oosterwold is a Dutch suburb where residents must grow food on at least half of their property.
Just east of Amsterdam, a unique urban experiment is taking place in the community of Oosterwold. It is challenging traditional city planning by combining self-sufficiency with mandatory urban agriculture.
Covering 4,300 hectares (10,625 acres) in Almere, a suburb of Amsterdam, this initiative gives residents the freedom to design their own homes and infrastructure, with one key rule: 50% of each plot must be dedicated to food production, as part of a growing food law.
Since its establishment in 2017, Oosterwold has grown to about 5,000 residents, with a waiting list for new arrivals. The community is designed around a collaborative approach to development, where residents take responsibility for building roads, schools, waste systems, and even naming streets. What makes Oosterwold stand out is its non-negotiable emphasis on urban agriculture, which integrates food production directly into urban living.
Marco de Kat, a local councillor and Oosterwold resident, has fully embraced the community’s sustainable ethos. Since moving in 2017, de Kat has transformed his 800-square-meter garden into a source of fresh produce, growing fruits, vegetables, and herbs like apples, peppers, and basil. In the winter, he and his wife rely on preserved foods stored in freezers to maintain their supply.
“Yesterday, I forgot to think about what to eat,” de Kat shared. “You just walk through your garden, find something, and that’s what you eat.”

While some residents like de Kat focus on personal consumption, others have ******* ambitions. Take Jalil Bekkour, for example. He turned his garden into a testing ground for ingredients used in his restaurant, Atelier Feddan. Since opening three years ago, 80% of the food served at the restaurant comes from Oosterwold, showing the potential for urban agriculture to drive local food economies.
Unlike typical urban areas, Oosterwold offers residents great flexibility in how they manage their plots. Agricultural techniques vary widely, from orchards to greenhouses to small pastures. This freedom has led to a diverse range of approaches to farming, with each resident contributing their own ideas to the overall system.
“This rule – the requirement to produce food on at least 50% of your property – is unique,” said Jan Eelco Jansma, a researcher at Wageningen University & Research. He was instrumental in promoting the idea of integrating urban agriculture into Oosterwold’s development.
Despite its flexibility, the project hasn’t been without challenges. Many residents lack farming expertise, and early on, there wasn’t much guidance available. Jansma described the planning process as “a bit laissez-faire,” leaving many to figure things out on their own. To address these challenges, the Oosterwold Food Hub was created.
Managed by the Almere local authority and the Oosterwold food cooperative, the hub provides resources, workshops, and knowledge-sharing to help residents improve their agricultural practices.
“Some people do it very well, but others don’t,” said Yolanda Sikking, Oosterwold’s participation manager. “We decided we need to encourage more people to improve.”
Oosterwold’s focus on urban agriculture has several economic benefits. By growing their own food, residents save on grocery costs and contribute to the local economy. Businesses like Atelier Feddan show that urban agriculture can also drive job creation and reduce food transportation expenses.
Property values in Oosterwold have been rising as the area becomes known for its sustainability. Many potential homebuyers are attracted not just by the homes themselves, but by the lifestyle and values associated with eco-conscious living. The community also provides opportunities for local entrepreneurs to experiment with agricultural innovations and get immediate feedback from consumers.
The environmental impact of Oosterwold’s urban agriculture is also significant. Research indicates that small-scale urban farms in the area are helping to improve soil quality and biodiversity, reducing the ecological damage caused by urban sprawl. Residents use methods like composting, rainwater harvesting, and natural pest control to minimize their environmental footprints.
However, a 2024 study by Jason Hawes raised concerns about the carbon emissions generated during the initial infrastructure development. Hawes pointed out that the early stages of urban farming can produce higher emissions compared to traditional farming methods. To address this, residents are encouraged to use reclaimed materials and design their plots for long-term sustainability.
“Making the right infrastructure choices early on is key to long-term sustainability,” Hawes said, urging planners to prioritize low-carbon strategies.
Oosterwold has set an ambitious goal to supply 10% of Almere’s food, a target that many believe is achievable. But the community’s influence could extend beyond its own borders. Oosterwold could serve as a model for urban development worldwide, particularly as cities face growing challenges related to food security and environmental sustainability.
Rositsa T. Ilieva, director of policy at the City University of New York’s Urban Food Policy Institute, believes Oosterwold’s model is replicable. “By making agriculture a central part of land use planning, cities can transform suburban areas into vibrant, multifunctional spaces that support ecological, social, and economic goals.”
Jansma agrees, emphasizing that urban planners often separate agriculture from urbanization, but Oosterwold shows that integrating the two can lead to a more sustainable future.
Oosterwold’s scale may seem intimidating, but residents advise newcomers to start small. “You don’t have to go big right away,” said Bekkour. “Focus on growing a few basic crops and expand from there.”
“You can make it work with a strong vision and the right mindset,” added de Kat.
Oosterwold is challenging long-held ideas about urban living and food production. As cities around the world deal with environmental challenges and food security issues, the lessons learned from Oosterwold could inspire a new wave of resilient, sustainable urban communities.

CarbonFree’s recent announcement of Endurocal, a zero-carbon calcium carbonate alternative, represents one of several significant developments in the sector’s push to create commercial applications for captured carbon emissions.
Announced on November 18, 2024, Endurocal enters a domestic calcium carbonate market that consumes approximately 30 million metric tons annually. This calcium carbonate alternative serves multiple industries, including plastics manufacturing, paint production, and paper manufacturing. In architectural paints alone, calcium carbonate comprises 30-40 percent of product contents, controlling brightness and enhancing volume.
The economics of carbon capture products are increasingly competitive with traditional materials. Industry analysis from the Global CCS Institute indicates that carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) projects can achieve cost parity with conventional production methods when carbon prices exceed $50 per ton. Companies like Carbon Engineering and Climeworks have demonstrated that direct air capture technology, while currently more expensive than point-source capture, could reach costs below $100 per ton by 2030.
Environmental impact assessments reveal significant advantages for carbon-derived calcium carbonate alternatives. Life cycle analysis studies conducted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory show that mineralization-based carbon capture can achieve negative emissions of up to 0.8 tons of CO2 per ton of product. This data supports the environmental benefits of products like Endurocal, which uses CarbonFree’s proprietary SkyCycle technology to intercept carbon dioxide from industrial facility stacks.
The regulatory landscape increasingly favors carbon capture technologies. The U.S. Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act allocated $12 billion to carbon capture projects. At the same time, the Inflation Reduction Act expanded the 45Q tax credit to $85 per metric ton for carbon capture and storage. Similar incentives exist in the European Union under the Innovation Fund and Canada through the Carbon Capture Investment Tax Credit.
CarbonFree’s partnership with U.S. Steel, announced in April 2024, exemplifies the industrial-scale potential of these technologies. When operational in 2027, the project will capture 50,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually, equivalent to emissions from 12,000 passenger vehicles. The installation will also eliminate approximately 150,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide through calcium carbonate alternative production.

Other companies are pursuing diverse innovations in the carbon capture space other than calcium carbonate alternatives. Carbon Clean’s CycloneCC technology reduces carbon capture costs by up to 50% compared to conventional methods through a modular design that requires just 1/10th of the physical footprint. The system can capture up to 200,000 metric tons of CO2 annually and can be deployed in under eight weeks, making it particularly attractive for retrofit applications in steel, cement, and refining facilities.
Carbfix in Iceland has pioneered the injection of CO2 into basalt formations for rapid mineralization, turning carbon dioxide into stone within two years. Their process dissolves CO2 in water and injects it into underground basalt formations, where it reacts with minerals to form stable carbonates. The company’s Coda Terminal project, scheduled for completion in 2026, aims to mineralize 3 million tons of CO2 annually in Iceland’s basalt reserves. The terminal will receive liquefied CO2 shipped from Northern Europe, demonstrating a viable pathway for permanent carbon storage.

Svante’s solid sorbent technology offers another approach to carbon capture, focusing on industrial applications where space constraints make traditional solutions impractical. Their technology uses structured adsorbent beds in a rotating carousel configuration to trap CO2 molecules from industrial flue gas streams. This system can capture up to 95% of carbon dioxide emissions while operating at a lower temperature than conventional systems, reducing energy requirements. Svante has partnered with Chevron and Dimensional Energy to develop commercial-scale facilities that can capture and convert CO2 into synthetic fuel products, with their first large-scale commercial plant expected to process 2,000 tons of CO2 per day.
Market demand for sustainable materials continues to grow. The International Energy Agency projects that carbon capture capacity needs to reach 1.6 billion tons annually by 2030 to align with net-zero targets. This creates opportunities for calcium carbonate alternatives and other carbon-derived products to gain market share.
In San Antonio, CarbonFree’s first-generation SkyMine facility operates alongside a cement factory, ranking among the world’s largest industrial-scale carbon mineralization operations. The company maintains active membership in several industry organizations, including the Carbon Capture Coalition, Decarb Connect, and American Iron and Steel Institute.
The advancement of carbon capture technology and its commercial applications suggests a transformation in how industries approach environmental responsibility while maintaining economic competitiveness. As more calcium carbonate alternatives and other carbon-derived products enter the market, manufacturers gain new options for reducing their carbon footprint without compromising product quality.

Nature needs us: The story of Ecoflix
As a child I was blessed, but unaware how fortunate I was to be able to see and enjoy nature in its nearly pristine condition. It took decades for me to even begin to grasp the reality that every bird, insect, fish, tree, etc., was just part of a complex system, operating in a mind-numbing harmony. Each played its part as a necessary component of the whole system. The first wave of comprehension was stunning. The simple beauty of dissimilar living things coordinating in perfect balance still mesmerizes me today.
As I grew up and entered the world of mankind, my career efforts pretty much consumed me. Yet somehow, against all odds, my personal evolution continued. Although I became a trial lawyer, my love of nature, and particularly animals, remained important to me. And almost as if led by some invisible force, I found a way to harmonize my love for animals and natural environments with my career.
My fascination with nature’s perfection enthralled me, until I recognized a sad and serious change underway. Our world had seemingly broken into two parts, effectively in competition with each other. “Civilization” was growing without concern and almost always at the expense of nature.
Wild spaces were disappearing, and even domestic animals suffered needlessly from human insensitivity. For the first time, I became aware that even animals needed legal assistance. Lost, abused, and disregarded, creatures of every shape and size needed help surviving in the presence of humans. This made it an easy decision to step where I could, eventually becoming a 40-year pro bono passion project. At the same time, my wife and I opened our hearts and our home to animals in need.
Eventually, the Covid pandemic prompted my retirement from the practice of law. And while I found more available time, I felt less able to help animals. The law had been my tool to make a difference. But I soon discovered a new calling.
I wanted to maintain the beautiful bond I felt with the animals I served. Only after my retirement did I recall something my grandfather once told me. I was too young to process his wisdom at the time. But remarkably, I never forgot his exact words. And with much life experience behind me, they finally made perfect sense. He said: “David, all living things are connected. We share a universal, creative intelligence.” Simply put, he meant that all living things need each other to survive.
That moment from my childhood brought everything into focus, prompting me to create the Ecoflix Foundation. Founded and funded on blind faith, we are now a U.S. and U.K. nonprofit dedicated to saving animals and the planet. Our Ecoflix channel is available worldwide, on any device, providing a global platform for beautiful and inspiring films, as well as for wildlife filmmakers in need of a venue to showcase their important work.

And federal, state, and local governments are taking note. Some are feeling the urgency more than others and have been actively taking action to reduce emissions, minimize waste, preserve natural resources, and enable their citizens to lead a more sustainable lifestyle.
But which states have made the biggest efforts? Let’s take a look at the greenest states in the U.S., according to research by ConsumerAffairs.
Vermont
The state of Vermont has clinched the top spot in ConsumerAffairs’ Greenest States list. Based on data, it has the lowest CO2 emissions per capita (0.072 tons) and a pretty high tree equity score of 89.018.
The state has taken numerous proactive initiatives to minimize its carbon footprint across critical areas like transportation, waste management, electricity, agriculture, and industrial processes.
Its Comprehensive Energy Plan has set an ambitious goal to become net zero in emissions by 2050. As part of this, the state is encouraging the use of electric vehicles, efficient weatherization of homes, adoption of renewable energy, and more.
In 2024, Vermont became the first U.S. state to hold fossil fuel businesses accountable for climate damage through its Climate Superfund Act. This became a monumental moment that set a precedent for other states to take similar action against some of the biggest environmental polluters.

Closely following Vermont on the Greenest Cities ranking is the state of Washington with a green score of 59.50 (only 0.20 points behind Vermont).

Seattle, for instance, has consistently ranked among the greenest cities in the U.S., while Longview is noted as a top metro for air quality.
At the state level, Washington has one of the highest percentages of battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in America, mostly thanks to aggressive incentive programs it has implemented over the years.
The state’s Climate Commitment Act (CCA) plays a huge role in its mission to lower greenhouse gas emissions to 95% by 2050. Having encountered various climatic threats, from wildfires to floods, Washington has also focused resources on a climate change resilience strategy to build a sustainable environment for its citizens.
Maine
Maine’s climate action has resulted in the state being ranked high in a number of critical areas.
Currently, it recycles an impressive 47.7% of its waste—the highest in America. And just 15.1% of its waste goes to landfills, the second lowest among all states.
A staggering 63% of its energy is generated through renewable sources, placing the state among the top green energy generators in the country. Maine also ranks among the top ten for the lowest CO2 emissions per capita and high tree equity.

The U.S. commitment follows the earlier submissions of 2035 targets by the United Arab Emirates, Brazil, and Switzerland. The European Union, however, appears likely to miss the February deadline, with its proposal for a 2040 climate target delayed. Climate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra confirmed that the EU’s updated plan would not be presented within the first 100 days of the new administration.
Developing nations also remain hesitant to finalize their targets, citing insufficient financial support for clean energy transitions and climate adaptation. Many left last month’s COP29 summit in Baku disappointed, underscoring the persistent divide between wealthy nations and the global south.
In its updated NDC, the U.S. emphasized progress toward previous goals, surpassing its 2020 target of a 17% emissions reduction. The administration remains confident in meeting its 2030 target of a 50%–52% reduction, citing landmark legislation like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act.
These measures include billions of dollars in incentives for clean energy technologies and infrastructure. They also prompted the European Union to adopt its Net Zero Industry Act to maintain competitiveness amid China’s growing dominance in the clean energy sector.
Despite these advancements, the U.S. remains the world’s largest oil and gas producer, with output continuing to climb under Biden’s tenure. New York Governor Kathy Hochul, co-chair of the alliance, stated, “President Biden’s bold leadership is keeping us on a path to achieve a clean energy economy, and together, the country’s climate-leading governors will carry the torch forward.” New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the clear benefits of sustained climate action.
Linda Kalcher, director of Strategic Perspectives in Brussels, offered a more positive view, calling the NDC a “decent farewell gift” from Biden. Kalcher highlighted state-level initiatives pushing clean energy goals, adding that it remains to be seen whether they can offset federal policies promoting fossil fuel expansion.
The Biden administration’s commitment underscores the stark divide in U.S. climate policy as Trump prepares to reassume office. With his campaign rhetoric favoring increased oil and gas development, questions linger about whether the U.S. can maintain momentum toward its emissions targets.
