They are also planning on using homemade compost in this garden. These commitments align with the All England Club’s commitments to reducing emissions and contributing to a “net gain” in wildlife in its operations by 2030.
One ingredient in their homemade compost comes straight from the staff breakroom. The gardeners are mixing used coffee grounds with their compost. This is also part of the organizer’s efforts to do more with food and drink waste.
Coffee grounds are good natural additives to composts because they are rich in nitrogen. They can help balance the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio that is necessary for effective compost decomposition. Coffee grounds improve compost structure as they help to aerate the mixture and improve drainage. They also attract beneficial microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi, which help break down the organic matter and create rich, nutrient-dense compost.
Coffee grounds (and even brewed coffee) will help produce healthy green growth and strong stems. In addition to nitrogen, coffee contains calcium and magnesium, which benefit plant health. Roses and hydrangeas—two famous plants on the Wimbledon grounds — are among the many plants that benefit from coffee. Organic matter like compost will also benefit petunias by helping ensure that the soil is well drained.
As Wimbledon is moving toward peat-free in their gardens, compost is a good alternative because, when added to soil, it can improve soil structure, increase water infiltration and retainment and add beneficial microbes. Maersk Line, the world’s largest container shipping company, implemented slow steaming across its fleet in 2009. By 2012, the company reported a 27% reduction in CO2 emissions per container moved compared to 2007 levels. This significant decrease was achieved primarily through speed reduction, demonstrating the powerful impact of slow steaming on emissions reduction.

In June 2024, a new version of Catan was released to cater to the environmental board game players worldwide. Catan- New Energies is a standalone game that incorporates Catan’s harvesting, trading, and building system. As the name suggests, players must decide to invest in clean energy resources or opt for cheaper fossil fuels, which, much like real life, could negatively impact societies.
All players begin with cheap fossil fuels that can cause pollution events. Similar to how it is in the real world, it is faster and more affordable for players to build fossil fuels than renewables. As the game progresses, players can invest in renewable energy sources and are rewarded for sustainable strategies (such as picking up more resource cards). The twist is that the most sustainable player doesn’t necessarily win. Sometimes the people playing fossil fuel will win because that’s what happens in the real world. The game will end if pollution levels remain too high for too long. In that case, the player with the lowest carbon footprint becomes the winner by default.
While these games are designed for players to have fun, there is an underlying message in that players will end the game thinking about the future of our planet and that it will inspire action and activism. They are also designed to normalize some of the difficult conversations we sometimes have around fossil fuels and energy. Moreover, the game highlights some of the more unfair realities of the effects of climate change. Such as illustrating that island nations that generally produce less greenhouse gas emissions will experience the impact of climate change and disasters much more than places with more emissions.
Keeping up with the environmental theme, the game itself is printed and assembled in the US using sustainably sourced wood and paper, with no plastic components. There is also no plastic shrink wrap to keep the boxes sealed.
This isn’t the first time that the Catan brand is confronting the topic of climate change. In 2011, an expansion pack for its base game called Catan: Oil Springs was released. This expansion pack was designed for players to think about using oil as a resource and how that usage would impact their society and the earth. A 2017 study found that people who played the Catan Oil Springs expansion were inspired to take more sustainable actions.
As climate change continues to take its toll on the world is important that we spread the word to the masses to take action. Using board games like Catan- New Energies to share these messages allows players to think about how their decisions can impact our planet. Colour in Climate – Empowering Women and BIPOC Activists: A Gathering to Champion Climate Change Leadership

Nicole Doray, alongside Grace Swain and Urshian Khalid, champions inclusivity for environmental and social activists in the GTA*, with a focus on women and BIPOC communities. Their idea, the Colour in Climate that will be held in Spring 2024, spotlights climate justice work led by marginalized groups, fostering celebration and solidarity.
Nicole, drawing from personal experiences, critiques conventional climate events as lacking community-building and often tokenizing BIPOC attendees. Her vision? A space where activists of colour feel valued for their contributions, free from tokenism and formalities.
“We wanted to create a space for folks to feel nurtured without needing to be of service, recognized without being tokenized, and connected in community without needing to validate their work or prove that they deserve to be in this space,” Nicole Doray, Feb. 2024.
Their innovative approach involves co-creating the event with activists, ensuring inclusivity from the ground up. By collaborating with leaders from various sectors and age groups, they aim to represent the diverse voices driving social and climate change.
Despite the buzz surrounding their initiative, challenges emerged. Coordinating with 50 to 60 leaders meant navigating conflicting feedback. A notable example was their effort to provide professional headshots, acknowledging the importance of diverse representation while addressing concerns of exploitation.
They knew this was the right step as they guided themselves by their north star: “whatever leaves attendees feeling included, appreciated, celebrated, and loved. So, every decision that we make, including the way we consult attendees, is made with that as the goal.” Nicole Doray, Feb. 2024.
As they forge ahead, Nicole and her team remain committed to meeting their community’s needs. Beyond mere networking, their goal is to foster genuine connections, believing impactful
work stems from mutual understanding and compassion. As Nicole put it, “some of the best work evolves from people feeling genuinely connected and accountable to each other.” Building genuine relationships is the main goal of the event; “any work that emerges from those relationships will be a ‘cherry on top’.”
To realize their vision, securing funding was paramount. They sought grants aligning with their values, prioritizing justice, inclusion, and flexibility. The Youth Harbour Assembly Grant, with its accommodating application process and emphasis on diversity, proved instrumental.
With the event garnering community support, Nicole anticipates its realization as a testament to genuine collaboration. Their inclusive approach sets a precedent for organizations, urging them to prioritize diverse voices and needs.
Looking forward, Nicole challenges other organizations to prioritize the well-being of marginalized team members, recognizing their vital role in driving climate and social justice efforts.
“I would challenge them to ask their team members, especially women and non-binary team members of ******, what would make them feel most supported, uplifted, and nurtured as we head into yet another year of intense climate and social justice action,” Nicole proposed.

Although it has the word “salad” in its name, Caesar salad isn’t necessarily vegetarian or vegan. While bacon bits and even chicken were not part of the original recipe, Caesar salads are famous for having them. Anchovies (small fish) are traditionally added to Caesar dressing because they give the salad a unique umami flavour.
Caesar salads are not traditionally vegan because they contain eggs (or mayonnaise made from eggs) and parmesan cheese, both of which come from animal products. While the mayonnaise can easily be eliminated from the recipe or swapped for a vegan mayonnaise, finding an alternative for parmesan cheese is trickier.
Not only is parmesan cheese made from a cow, but it also has a high environmental footprint. This is because Parmesan cheese and other ******* cheeses are made with more milk than soft cheeses. ******* cheeses are also stored in commercial processing units for longer and use up a lot of electricity in their production. Bacon bits can be replaced with vegan bacon, and chicken can be replaced with tofu. To replace the egg or mayonnaise ingredients, chefs are choosing cashews as a sustainable alternative. Raw and soaked cashews, ground to a very smooth cream, have properties similar to whipped egg yolks, which offer that rich texture we see in traditional Caesar salads.

Our method allows the efficient extraction of the mineral from very dilute liquids, which can greatly broaden the potential sources of lithium.”
The research team, led by Liu, focused on optimizing the size of olivine iron phosphate particles used in the extraction process. They discovered that particle size plays a crucial role in the efficiency and ability to extract lithium from seawater.
“When you produce iron phosphate, you can get particles that are drastically different sizes and shapes,” Yan explained. “In order to figure out the best synthesis method, we need to know which of those particles are most efficient at selecting lithium over sodium.”
The team synthesized olivine iron phosphate particles using different methods, resulting in a range of particle sizes spanning 20 to 6,000 nanometers. They then divided these particles into groups based on their size and used them to build electrodes that could extract lithium from a weak solution.
Their experiments revealed a “sweet spot” in particle size that maximizes the selectivity for lithium over sodium, a common contaminant in brine solutions. Particles that were too large or too small tended to let more sodium into their structures, leading to less pure extractions of lithium.
“It turned out that there was this sweet spot in the middle where both the kinetics and the thermodynamics favor lithium over sodium,” Liu noted.
This electrochemical approach to extract lithium from seawater could dramatically reduce the environmental impact of lithium production while simultaneously expanding the available sources of the mineral. Unlike traditional methods that require massive amounts of water or energy-intensive mining operations, this new technique can work with much more dilute solutions.

San Jose’s Tech Interactive: Learning about sustainable futures
Tech Interactive, located in San Jose, California, is a world-class science and technology centre. It offers a wide variety of hands-on activities, exploratory labs, design challenge experiences, and interactive exhibits on climate change, robotics, innovations in healthcare, cybersecurity, and so much more. Tech Interactive has been around since 1998 and welcomes over 200,000 visitors of all ages annually.
I had the opportunity to visit Tech Interactive this summer and was drawn into all of the interactive activities, which were fun and educational not only for kids but also for adults. The exhibits that really drew me in were the “Solve for Earth” exhibits, which allowed visitors to learn about how we can live sustainably and reduce the impacts of climate change.
At the entrance of these climate change exhibits was a Connection Wall, the purpose of which was to explore ways to live sustainably and understand the role that technology plays in helping us achieve our sustainable goals.
The wall was divided into different sections: energy, water, food, transportation, and biodiversity. The user’s goal was to see how each piece was connected and eventually spark a conversation about how to build a sustainable future.
The Tech Interactive Connection Wall was designed to show how our individual choices and decisions affect our lives and the environment. Each section had a wheel that you could turn to see what the impact was. For example, you could turn food into a monoculture, which meant clearing land and reducing wildlife habitats. It also increased the amount of water needed. But if you spun the wheel to show mixed land use and different types of crops, you would see how the local biodiversity would come back, and the water usage would go down.
Although I already have extensive knowledge about all of these things, it was informative and helpful to see visually what impacts our actions have on the environment. Something like this is a great visual for younger people who may learn about it in school but can’t actually grasp the magnitude of these issues.
Another interactive and educational activity was called Sustainable Cities. On the screen, you could choose different aspects (transportation, land use, buildings) to create a city, and you would be ranked on how green your city was. What’s even cooler is that you were able to see the city in 3D being “built” right in front of you. It was a very innovative way to show people the importance of green cities and what contributes to them reaching this status.
Another fun activity at Tech Interactive was a food waste fridge with replicates of different food items (flour, condiments, vegetables), and when you lifted each one, they would tell you how long their fridge life was and at what temperatures they lasted best. It was also designed to teach you about what’s in season and what “use-by” dates on food mean.
The Solve For Earth exhibits included many other activities on waste, water, scientific stories, emerging technologies, biodiversity, and so much more. Every activity was a unique way to show what a sustainable future could look like. No matter your age, there was something new for you to learn about.
Exhibits like the ones at Tech Interactive are great examples to teach people about the issues of climate change in a fun way. They also provide visitors with the solutions we need to create a sustainable future. It’s hard for me to explain in words how amazing these exhibits are, so I encourage anyone who’s in the San Jose area to visit this exhibition; you’d be happy you did.

The ********* Wildlife Federation receives up to $258,583 to create nectaring, breeding, and roosting habitats within agricultural and urban landscapes near the southern Great Lakes. The City of Richmond Hill is granted $56,000 to create a new meadow at the David Dunlap Observatory. This project will expand urban monarch butterfly habitat within the city, offering crucial resources for these butterflies.

Additionally, they support Canada’s commitment to the Bonn Challenge, a global effort to promote landscape and ecosystem restoration activities.
