  1. TikTok Introduces New AI Alive Tool to Create Videos From Photos in Stories TikTok Introduces New AI Alive Tool to Create Videos From Photos in Stories TikTok is introducing a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature that will allow users to turn an image into an animated video. On Tuesday, the vertical video-based social media platform announced a new AI feature dubbed AI Alive that uses generative AI technology to create videos from photos. Currently, the tool can only be used to generate videos in TikTok Stories, and not directly to the feed. Additionally, the company said it is taking several steps to mitigate the risk of the feature being abused by users. TikTok AI Alive Feature Can Turn Your Photos Into Videos In a newsroom post on its US website, TikTok announced the rollout of the new AI feature. It is the first AI-powered image-to-video generation tool offered by any of the video-focused social media platforms. Instagram, X, and Snapchat do not offer any AI-powered video generation tools. While YouTube Shorts has recently begun testing a text-to-video generation feature, it has not been rolled out widely. The TikTok AI Alive feature can be found by tapping the blue plus icon (+) on the top of the Inbox page or Profile page. There, users will first have to select a single image from their Story Album. The AI Alive icon is located on the right side toolbar on the photo edit page. It should be placed in the second spot from the top. Tapping on the AI Alive icon opens another window where users can add a text prompt of how they want the image to be animated. If they are not sure, they can also use one of the many suggested text prompts on the same page. Once done, they can tap the generate button and a short video is created. Users can then post the video, and people can video the story from within the For You and Following feeds, as well as on the user’s profile page. The company said that it has implemented moderation technology to review the uploaded photo, text prompt, and the AI Alive video before it is shown to the creator. A final check occurs when the user posts the video to their Story. Additionally, other users can report videos they think might break the platform’s guidelines. Apart from that, TikTok is also adding a visible AI-generated label to let people know that this is a synthetic video. Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) metadata, a standard among major AI players, is also added to every AI-generated video, the company said. Li Hongbo | Visual China Group | Getty Images ******** battery maker CATL is set to price its shares at HK$263 ($33.70) each and increase the size of the company’s Hong Kong listing, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the matter, raising about $4.6 billion. It would be the largest listing globally in 2025, according to LSEG data. Prospective investors have been told orders for CATL stock made below HK$263 per share risk missing out on allocations, the sources added. A so-called offer size adjustment option to increase the number of shares on ***** by 17.7 million is set be exercised, the sources said. Adding that stock will take the value of CATL’s listing to about HK$35.66 billion ($4.57 billion). The sources could not be named discussing confidential information. CATL did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters. The HK$263 price is about a 6% discount to CATL’s Shenzhen-stock’s closing price of 258.77 yuan (HK$279.99) on Tuesday. The stock was trading up about 1% on Wednesday, compared to China’s CSI 300 which was up about 1.5%. Hong Kong shares of a company typically trade at a discount compared with its mainland stocks. Investors are usually offered stock at a cheaper price in offshore listings as an incentive to buy into the share offering. More than 20 cornerstone investors subscribed for about $2.6 billion worth of CATL shares in the listing, the filings showed. CATL’s books were multiple times oversubscribed with strong demand from sovereign wealth and global long-only investors since its launch on Monday, according to a book message sent to investors on Tuesday and reviewed by Reuters The company said about 90% of the proceeds raised, about HK$27.6 billion, would be spent on the construction of its planned Hungary factory, part of its plan to make batteries in Europe for automakers such as BMW, Stellantis and Volkswagen. The first phase of the factory, in which it is investing 2.7 billion euros ($3.03 billion), is due to start producing batteries this year. It aims to begin construction on the second phase later this year. CATL shares are due to start trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on May 20, according to its filings. 4. Nearly 5 years in, PS5 sales remain neck-and-neck with PS4 Nearly 5 years in, PS5 sales remain neck-and-neck with PS4 Nearly five years into its life, PlayStation 5 sales remain neck-and-neck with its predecessor, PlayStation 4. In its latest results covering the three months ending March 31, 2025, Sony said it sold some 2.8 million PlayStation 5 consoles, for a total of 18.5 million for the fiscal year (down from 20.8 million). That means PS5 has now sold 77.8 million units total since its launch in November 2020 – just over one million units behind where PlayStation 4 was at the same ******* of its lifecycle. That figure comes with the caveat that PS5 suffered significant stock issues during the pandemic, and PS4 was also significantly cheaper than PS5 currently is, launch aligned. Five years after launch, a standard PS4 could be purchased for as little as $200/£200 ($256/£256, adjusted for inflation), while PS5 has actually increased in price since launch, at £430 / $450. Going forward, Sony faces a challenging economic climate with PlayStation 5. Most consoles are manufactured in China, where US tariffs of 30% currently apply, but are paused down from 145% for 90 days. PlayStation 4 went on to sell 117 million units, which is Sony’s second-best-selling console behind PlayStation 2 (160 million). The Consumer Technology Association (CTA) has warned that Donald Trump’s tariffs could lead to console prices rising by nearly 70% in the US. Looking ahead to the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, Sony said it expects to sell fewer PlayStation 5 consoles, likely affected by Grand Theft Auto 6’s recent delay to May 2026. However, it expects an increase in first-party game sales, with Ghost of Yotei, Death Stranding 2, and Marathon due out this year. DFC Intelligence CEO David Cole commented: “The delay in GTA VI is a real blow to the PS5. This was supposed to be the product that got many consumers to get off the PS4 and on to a PS5.” Sony said its monthly active gaming users for the year ended April 1, 2025, were up 5% at 124 million users, which is the highest in PlayStation’s history. Last year, the company said that about half of its monthly active users were on PS4. For the fiscal year, Sony’s Network services revenue – which encompasses PS Plus and advertising revenue – increased 22.7. Software sales (PS4 and PS5) increased 5.9% year-over-year, to 303 million units, 28.9 million of which were first-party titles. Digital software accounted for 76% of game sales, compared to 70% last year. 5. 2025 Skoda Elroq pricing: Czech EV to undercut ID.4 and Model Y 2025 Skoda Elroq pricing: Czech EV to undercut ID.4 and Model Y Skoda Australia has confirmed preliminary details of its upcoming Elroq electric SUV, ahead of a sales launch in September. A pair of variants will be available at launch – the 85 Select and 130 Edition – with prices starting from $54,990 and $64,990 respectively, both before on-road costs. That puts the European-made Elroq smack bang up against the physically larger BYD Sealion 7 (from $54,990), and undercuts the related Volkswagen ID.4 Pro ($59,990) and Tesla Model Y RWD ($58,990). Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. Camera IconPre-production vehicle shown Credit: CarExpert Both variants will be powered by a rear-mounted 210kW electric motor fed by an 82kWh (net) battery, claiming a 0-100km/h sprint in a near hot hatch-like 6.6 seconds and a combined WLTP driving range of 529 kilometres. Skoda also quotes an urban cycle range of 661km, again WLTP-certified. That’s more driving range than both the entry-level Sealion 7 and Model Y, and it’s also quicker to triple figures than the BYD. However, the VW ID.4 Pro quotes more range and the Model Y offers quicker acceleration according to official specifications. Skoda offers smaller battery variants overseas, as well as a dual-motor RS performance variant. While all of these are “under study” for our market, the Czech brand’s local offshoot is yet to properly confirm if and when they’re coming. Measuring 4488mm long and 1884mm wide with a 2765mm wheelbase, the Elroq matches the larger Enyaq’s distance between the axles but is around 170mm shorter in overall length, making the smaller Skoda EV closer in exterior dimensions to the likes of the BYD Atto 3 (4455/1875/1615mm). Skoda quotes a boot capacity of 470 litres with the rear seats in place, expanding to 1580 litres with them folded. This is more than an Atto 3 (440-1340L) but less than a Sealion 7 (500L) and ID.4 (543-1575L). 6. ‘Like lighting a match in a room full of dynamite’ ‘Like lighting a match in a room full of dynamite’ The White House released a statement in late April announcing an executive order to fast-track deep-sea mining for minerals such as nickel, cobalt, and titanium. The directive aims to reduce reliance on imported resources. But scientists warn that it could open the door to irreversible damage in fragile ocean ecosystems, as Mongabay noted. What’s happening? This new order focuses on polymetallic nodules, which are mineral-filled lumps found on the ocean floor. The White House’s statement pinpoints “strengthening partnerships with allies and industry to counter China’s growing influence over seabed mineral resources” as a primary driver of the order. The executive order directs federal agencies to take numerous actions within 60 days, such as creating a process to grant exploration and mining permits and finding organizations interested in processing mined materials. Why is deep-sea mining concerning? Though pitched as a path to economic and energy independence from other countries, deep-sea mining could also harm some of the planet’s most delicate ecosystems, warn experts. Jeff Watters, the Ocean Conservancy’s vice president for external affairs, told AP News that “the harm caused by deep-sea mining isn’t restricted to the ocean floor: it will impact the entire water column, top to bottom, and everyone and everything relying on it.” The ocean absorbs about 31% of carbon pollution, which helps reduce some impacts of the changing climate, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The ocean also provides about half of the oxygen for the planet — mostly through ocean plankton that photosynthesize. Deep-sea mining can disrupt the balance of the ocean, causing experts to criticize the move. Watch now: How bad is a gas stove for your home’s indoor air quality? “We found persistent impacts, lasting for nearly half a century, to the seabed environment and particularly the larger animals living in the area,” said *** National Oceanography Centre biogeosciences head Daniel Jones. It may also cause the release of toxins and carbon and biodiversity loss, according to the World Wildlife Fund. What’s being done to protect marine ecosystems? The United Nations’ International Seabed Authority issued a statement condemning the U.S. executive order. According to the ISA, attempts to mine the ocean floor beyond U.S. waters without global oversight would threaten decades of international cooperation. Organizations like Greenpeace have also spoken out against the order. “Authorizing deep-sea mining outside international law is like lighting a match in a room full of dynamite — it threatens ecosystems, global cooperation, and U.S. credibility all at once,” said Arlo Hemphill, a Greenpeace project lead, in a statement. While the order is currently on track to continue, scientists, advocacy groups, and policymakers are taking action to protect oceans and marine life. For example, aquafarmers in California farm invasive purple sea urchins to reduce their harm to local ecosystems. And dozens of Commonwealth nations created the Apia Ocean Declaration to protect 30% of oceans from harmful human actions by 2030. You can also do your part to keep marine ecosystems healthy by making ocean-friendly lifestyle choices. Reducing your carbon impact is a good way to start. Using less energy at home and cutting back on car travel can help lower pollution that makes its way into bodies of water. You can also choose plastic-free products to limit plastic pollution that winds up in the ocean. 7. CNBC’s The China Connection: U.S.-China relations have changed CNBC’s The China Connection: U.S.-China relations have changed The U.S. and China flags stand behind a microphone at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing on April 9, 2009. Frederic J. Brown | AFP | Getty Images This report is from this week’s CNBC’s The China Connection newsletter, which brings you insights and analysis on what’s driving the world’s second-largest economy. Each week, we’ll explore the biggest business stories in China, give a lowdown on market moves and help you set up for the week ahead. Like what you see? You can subscribe here. The big story The world got a taste of an effective U.S.-China trade embargo, and after a breakthrough on Monday with lowered tariffs, there’s no going back. China now has the “mutual respect” it has long craved from the U.S. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC’s Joe Kernen that “there is a sense of mutual respect” during the talks, a point that U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer also emphasized in his remarks to the press on Monday. That’s in stark contrast to how the first high-level bilateral meeting under the Biden administration kicked off with an exchange of insults in Alaska, followed by a “balloon incident” that delayed then-U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s first visit to China for months. What’s also rare is that on Monday, the U.S. and China released a joint statement — something both sides haven’t done since November 2023 with the “Sunnylands” statement on climate cooperation. Looking ahead, it will be critical to see whether joint statements will be issued after major meetings, or revert to separate readouts, a senior advisor to world governments and business leaders, who has regular dialogue with top officials from both countries, told CNBC. The source requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the conversations. The source expects volatility is likely around tariffs — an important point of flexibility for Trump as a tool for managing relations with major powers. The source added that a possible resolution could involve large ******** purchases from the U.S., investments in the U.S. that create jobs, while Beijing gets concessions core to its interests. New business landscape While the elevated tariffs didn’t last long, the trauma is real. Businesses now know they need to mitigate tariff uncertainty. “The post-WWII trade framework that once underpinned stable expectations is gone; even further tariff rollbacks won’t restore it,” Jianwei Xu, senior economist at Natixis, said in a LinkedIn post Monday. Xu added that large businesses will continue supply chain diversification, but small businesses may stop production — as overall confidence fades in the U.S. dollar as the world’s ultimate reserve currency. In a better-than-expected outcome, the U.S. and China agreed Monday to cut back on most new tariffs on each other’s goods for 90 days while the two sides negotiate economic and trade policy. That’s after China, the second-largest supplier of U.S. goods last year, was the only country across the 180 nations and territories hit by “reciprocal” U.S. tariffs to retaliate. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index has recovered to levels seen just before the early April escalation in trade tensions, while the S&P 500 clawed back into positive territory for the year. “It might be just the beginning of the inevitable collision of the two largest economies,” Ting Lu, chief China economist at Nomura, said in a note Monday, adding that “the U.S. is still on the offensive, but China might learn much better on how to dig itself in for the future attack.” China forges ahead on self-sufficiency Within half an hour of releasing the ********-language version of the joint U.S. trade agreement on Monday, China’s Commerce Ministry announced that several ministries and provinces held a meeting that day for strengthening export controls on critical minerals, another area in which China dominates the supply chain. The State Council, China’s top executive body, on Monday also published a whitepaper on national security that began by citing the Opium War, which marked the start of a traumatic ******* known as the “century of humiliation” in China, seared into its national consciousness. The whitepaper had similar narratives, calling for self-reliance and playing up the country’s role as a stabilizing force amid global uncertainty. However, China’s growing emphasis on national security tends to come at a cost for some foreign entities, according to business associations. “A 90-day suspension, while welcome, still creates significant uncertainty for U.S. companies’ business planning and costs, undermining their long-term global competitiveness,” the U.S.-China Business Council said in a statement Monday, urging China to “end unfair trade practices and market-entry barriers.” But Beijing continued to make thinly veiled swipes at the U.S. on Tuesday at a conference with Latin American and Caribbean leaders on Tuesday. ******** President Xi Jinping said that “bullying and coercion only lead to isolation,” without naming any country in particular, to an audience that included the presidents of Colombia, Brazil and Chile. Even as China’s exports to the U.S. plunged by more than 20% in April, trade data show that China ramped up its exports to Southeast Asia, the European Union and Latin America. “Despite the temporary tariff‑war reprieve, China continues to signal that it is looking to diversify away from U.S. agricultural goods,” Dennis Voznesenski, agricultural economist at CBA, said in a note Tuesday. He cautioned that seasonality and weather in South America would impact China’s ability to reduce its U.S. purchases. But he pointed to reports that China, on May 9, signed a letter of intent with exporters in Argentina to buy about $900 million in soybeans, corn and vegetable oil, while China has resumed soybean imports from five Brazilian firms. China’s imports from Argentina grew by 6.4% last year to $7.03 billion, according to official data accessed through financial data provider Wind Information. Tariff exemptions Established trade routes can’t easily be unwound overnight, and Peking University professor Justin Yifu Lin told reporters last month he didn’t expect full decoupling between the U.S. and China — largely because of U.S. reliance on ******** goods. U.S. products headed to China also saw tariff exemptions “being pretty liberally, leniently enforced,” Jacob Cooke, co-founder and CEO of WPIC Marketing + Technologies, told CNBC on Tuesday. The company helps foreign brands — such as Vitamix and IS Clinical — sell online in China and other parts of Asia. He said that, as was the case during the first Trump administration, most products being shipped to China ended up being exempted from tariffs, largely since the products had a large share of China-made components. Looking ahead, he expects that tariffs are going to be cut, and that “the largest trading relationship in the world is going to continue.” But for many companies that once solely relied on China-based suppliers, the sudden surge in U.S. tariffs last month is just the latest reason to broaden out. “Smarter importers have realized that long-term, they are most secure when they are diversified, and hence will continue looking for alternative sources,” said Ash Monga, founder and CEO of Guangzhou-based Imex Sourcing Services, a supply chain management company. He launched a website last month called “Tariff Help” for small businesses to find ways to diversify from China-based suppliers. — CNBC’s Bernice Ooi contributed to this report Top TV picks on CNBCNeed to know The U.S. and China are talking. Bessent and ******** Finance Minister Lan Fo’an met in Washington, D.C., on the sidelines of an international meeting there late last month, the Financial Times reported, citing sources. 9. Probe launched into Aviva’s £3.7bn takeover of Direct Line Probe launched into Aviva’s £3.7bn takeover of Direct Line Aviva’s planned takeover of Direct Line is to be reviewed by the ***’s competition watchdog, potentially setting back a £3.7bn deal. The two insurance firms agreed a major deal in December last year, but the Competition Markets Authority (CMA) said it was investigating whether a merger would result in a “substantial lessening” of competition in the insurance sector. The combined companies would make become a significant force in the car insurance sector, which has caught the attention of the CMA. The watchdog will report its findings of the probe in July. If the Aviva and Direct Line deal goes ahead, its size would rival other insurers like Legal & General and Prudential in terms of market value. Aviva shareholders would own about 87.5% of the new company while Direct Line shareholders would own about 12.5%. The combined company would result in an insurer with more than 20% of the share of home and motor insurance in the ***. Direct Line owns the Churchill and Green Flag brands, as well as its namesake brand as part of a portfolio offering car, ****, home and other insurance policies. In December, experts at JP Morgan said they did not expect any competition concerns from regulators. But the CMA said the creation of a single firm “may be expected to result in a substantial lessening of competition within any market or markets in the United Kingdom for goods or services”. The BBC has contacted Aviva for comment. Any interested parties have been asked to provide feedback to the CMA by 29 May. How do I protect myself if we divorce? When you get married, it might feel like a relief to pass off all financial duties to your spouse. But choosing to offload your financial responsibility can come at a cost. Take, for example, the following scenario: A wife recently checked into her household finances and discovered that there was $31,000 in credit card debt. With her husband controlling every cent, she doesn’t have clear insight on where the money goes. The debt is shocking to her, especially because she earns $120,000 per year. Now, she wants to learn how to protect herself financially, especially in the event the couple gets divorced. Although the average household with credit card debt carries a credit card balance of $6,065, the high interest rates typically associated with credit cards can make it difficult to climb out of this hole. But the real problem doesn’t lie only with credit card balances. After all, financial infidelity isn’t just about secret spending. This couple is likely also dealing with a lack of financial literacy. According to a recent study, only around 48% of adults in the U.S. possess a baseline level of financial literacy. Without the right knowledge, it can be difficult to get a household’s financial situation under control, even without the added complications of a controlling spouse. Married couples often have shared assets, like a home or bank account. In addition to shared assets, many married couples share liabilities, like a mortgage or credit card debt. But when one partner doesn’t know about shared debts, that puts them at financial risk, especially during a divorce. Many married couples often share joint responsibility for debts accumulated during the marriage. For example, if both partners open a joint credit card, they are both legally responsible for repaying that debt. Even if you and your partner actively choose to keep your finances separate and avoid joint credit cards, state law might dictate that both partners are still on the hook for any outstanding debts. For example, if you live in Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington or Wisconsin, you’re on the hook for debt your partner assumes. Story Continues Whether or not divorce is on the table, it would be important for this person to get involved in the household finances immediately. Although it can be challenging to establish new patterns of behavior around money, getting on the same page with your partner financially is critical. If you find yourself in a similar situation, start by investing in your own financial literacy. As you gain competence around financial topics, you’ll likely start to develop confidence around making joint and individual financial decisions. If planning to stay together, ideally, you’ll both come together around the central goal of money management. For example, if debt repayment is important to you, then hopefully you and your partner can commit to a debt repayment plan that takes care of the credit card debt as soon as possible. If divorce is on the table, you’ll need a different approach. Start gathering information about the household’s financial situation. Tally up the assets and debts. If you aren’t sure where to start, look for credit card statements, tax returns, and bank account transactions to build a picture of where your funds are going each month. With a clearer picture, move quickly to open your own bank account. Start depositing your paycheck into that account and build up savings to get you through the potentially rough patch ahead. In terms of household bills, you could transfer the necessary funds, and only the necessary funds, into the joint account for scheduled payments. Read more: BlackRock CEO Larry Fink has an important message for the next wave of American retirees — here’s how he says you can best weather the US retirement crisis If you are worried about your spouse opening more joint credit cards, freeze your credit temporarily, which prevents any new loans from being opened in your name or damaging your individual credit score. Consider enlisting the help of a financial advisor to help you evaluate the situation and help you prevent any future financial damage. If divorce is a pressing concern, consider getting an attorney involved as soon as possible. Regardless of the situation, it’s critical for both partners in every relationship to build some financial autonomy. Although it’s somewhat common for women to leave money management to their spouses, that can backfire even with the most supportive of spouses. A recent report from Fidelity shared that almost 90% of women become financially responsible for their own situation at some point in their lives. This might be due to divorce, widowhood, or choosing to stay single. With that in mind, it’s better to build financial autonomy sooner than later. It’s often most important to start with building financial literacy. Learning how to manage your money can help you set up a plan to protect yourself financially. For many women, rebuilding financial autonomy involves building an emergency fund and establishing individual credit accounts, while keeping diligent track of your finances and your personal budget. After hitting these basics, the right move varies based on the individual’s situation. For example, one woman might choose to pay down her credit card debt, but a debt-free woman might start to aggressively save for retirement. For those lacking the confidence to map out their own financial plan, consider turning to a financial advisor to get started. Along the way, you can evaluate the continuing need for a financial advisor as you gain the skills required to build long-term financial stability and independence. What Happened: The unverified incident, which sent shockwaves across defense circles, rattled the investors, with shares of French manufacturer Dassault Aviation plunging amid growing scrutiny over the jet’s battlefield performance On Friday, U.S. officials confirmed that a ********-made J-10 aircraft fired air-to-air missiles at Indian fighter jets. One of the Indian jets shot down was a French-built Rafale fighter, while Pakistan’s U.S.-made F-16s, produced by Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT), were not involved in the incident, reported Reuters. Pakistan asserts to have downed five Indian planes in total. On Sunday, Air Marshal A.K. Bharti responded in a press conference regarding the same. “We are in a combat scenario and losses are a part of it. All our pilots are back home,” stated Bharti. Notably, the Indian military gave no clear answer on this. The incident led to a decline in shares for Rafale manufacturer Dassault Aviation (OTC:DUAVF). 18. Release Date, Cast, Plot, and All You Need to Know Release Date, Cast, Plot, and All You Need to Know Anthony Mackie not only returned to the silver screen this year as Captain America in Captain America: Brave New World but is also making his return to the small screen as the Milkman, John Doe, in Twisted Metal. The adaptation of the popular video game series got great reviews for its first season and was renewed for a second season in 2023. The makers recently announced the release date for the sophomore season of Twisted Metal, which sees some familiar faces as well as some new ones that are exciting not just for fans of the game but also of the show. While Mackie returns as John Doe in the show, some exciting casting additions make it one of the anticipated series of the year. What is Twisted Metal about? Anthony Mackie in Twisted Metal | Credits: Peacock Based on the popular vehicular combat video game of the same name, Twisted Metal is set in a post-apocalyptic world where machines and the Internet have become obsolete. The world is a wasteland that is a free-for-all. It centers on a deliveryman, John Doe, who suffers from amnesia and has fleeting memories of his family before he is separated from them. Doe is tasked with delivering a mysterious package in exchange for a life of comfort, and on the way, he meets a variety of deranged characters. On his journey, he crosses paths with Quiet, a former criminal who is on the hunt for a police officer, Agent Stone, who killed her brother, Loud. They also come across a psychotic clown named Sweet Tooth. Anthony Mackie plays John, who did not really have a backstory in the games. The Sony games usually just involved the combat (which we will see in Season 2), and the show crafted backstories for the characters, including Sweet Tooth. Mackie, who grew up playing the games, mentioned how the writers crafted the incredible series to Deadline. We had a great group of writers, and John’s backstory was very important. Just simply because you have to think of and create all that stuff now, to where when you go into hopefully the next season or the third season, you have all that stuff written for you to build upon. The actor also reportedly did many of the stunts on his own, including driving inside a mall and jumping out of windows. Mackie said that there was a large group of stunt drivers for protection, and some of the more dangerous stunts were taken care of by the professionals. Peacock announced Twisted Metal‘s release date with a short video Sweet Tooth in Twisted Metal | Credits: Peacock While Season 1 established the world of Twisted Metal and saw John battle a wide range of marauders, the second season actually sees him compete in the demolition derby races that are widely covered in the games. It also introduces a legendary character from the games. Peacock posted an announcement video a few weeks ago revealing the show’s release date: Season 2 will arrive on July 31, 2025. The video shows Anthony Carrigan’s Calypso slowly and dramatically opening the garage door in the derby tournament. Anthony Mackie, who will be a participant, wonders aloud if Calypso really has to wait till the door opens all the way to make an entrance, while Stephanie Beatriz’s Quiet admires his showmanship. A short montage of the races, filled with explosions and violence, ensues. Sweet Tooth also makes an appearance, loving the races and free rein to kill. As he says, it is his kind of party. Fans seemed to be excited not just for the races but also for the introduction of several favorite characters like Mr. Grimm, Axel, and Dollface. Who stars in Twisted Metal Season 2? A still from Twisted Metal | Credits: Peacock Anthony Mackie returns as John Doe in the second season of Twisted Metal. Though not a ‘Milkman’ anymore, John hopes to find Quiet after she sacrifices her chance at a good life for him and leaves him on the other side of the settlement in New San Francisco. Mackie also has to compete in the derby this year on behalf of Raven. Mackie mentioned that he hoped John would grow up a bit this season and be more responsible. He said to Deadline, He’s going to have some challenges that’s gonna come his way that’s gonna force his hand to be more of an adult and make some really tough decisions because you can’t be a milkman all your life. We’ve seen what happens to milkmen. So you have to decide what’s most important — hold your milkman status, or grow up and be an adult. Stephanie Beatriz returns as John’s partner in crime, Quiet. At the end of season one, Quiet shoots John in the shoulder to make sure that he gets a spot inside the New San Francisco settlement and heads out into the wasteland again, where she is attacked by a group of female marauders headed by Dollface, John’s long-lost sister. Anthony Carrigan as Calypso in Twisted Metal | Credits: Peacock Tiana Okoye plays Dollface in Season 2. Joe Seanoa plays the physical version of the killer clown, Sweet Tooth, in the show and returns for season 2. Will Arnett, who is also an executive producer on the series, voices him. Other new additions to the cast include Richard de Klerk, Lisa Gilroy, Patty Guggenheim, and Michael James Shaw. One of the biggest additions to the cast is Anthony Carrigan as the legendary Mr. Calypso. The iconic creator of the derby games and its host. The first teaser of season 2 revealed the first look of Carrigan as Calypso. The Barry star looks interesting, with a long wig on his usually bald head. The actor will also be playing a role in Superman this year. Twisted Metal Season 2 is set to premiere on Peacock on July 31, 2025. 20. Disgraced veteran to learn fate over war crimes claims Disgraced veteran to learn fate over war crimes claims Decorated war veteran Ben Roberts-Smith will learn on Friday whether he had successfully overturned findings that he was, on the balance of probabilities, a war criminal. Justice Anthony Besanko delivered the bruising judgment in 2023 after the former elite soldier sued Nine newspapers and journalist Nick McKenzie over reports that claimed he had committed war crimes. Roberts-Smith launched an appeal, which was heard over 10 days in the Federal Court in February 2024. More than a year later, the Victoria Cross recipient is finally set to learn the outcome of his appeal when the Full Court delivers its decision on Friday. It will also rule on whether to reopen the appeal after Roberts-Smith argued there was a miscarriage of justice because McKenzie had unlawfully obtained details about his legal strategy. It came after a secret recording emerged of McKenzie telling Roberts-Smith’s ex-lover that two crucial witnesses were “actively briefing us on his legal strategy” during the initial trial. “We’re not learning like we anticipated most of it. One or two things now we know, which is helpful,” the award-winning journalist is heard saying. “I shouldn’t tell you. I’ve just breached my f***ing ethics in doing that, like this has put me in a s*** position now.” Lawyers for Roberts-Smith said there was a real possibility the outcome of the trial would have been different if McKenzie hadn’t obtained privileged information. But McKenzie’s lawyers said there was no proof any information had been used or that the use would be so serious as to affect the outcome. McKenzie maintains he didn’t know any of the information he received was privileged and says he passed on relevant communications to his lawyers. Roberts-Smith rose to prominence in 2011 after he was awarded Australia’s highest military honour, the Victoria Cross, for single-handedly taking out machine-gun posts to protect pinned-down colleagues in Afghanistan. But his reputation was tarnished in 2018 when McKenzie wrote explosive reports alleging the special forces veteran was complicit in the ******* of four unarmed men during his deployment in Afghanistan. In June 2023, Justice Anthony Besanko found the reports had been proven on the balance of probabilities – a lower standard than in a criminal proceeding. 21. An unresponsive jet that crashed after flying over Washington had dozens of unresolved maintenance issues, NTSB report says An unresponsive jet that crashed after flying over Washington had dozens of unresolved maintenance issues, NTSB report says A business jet that flew over Washington with no response from the pilot – prompting a chase by F-16s which caused a sonic ***** – likely lost pressure, causing everyone onboard to pass out, according to the final report from the National Transportation Safety Board. The pilot and three passengers died in the ******. On June 4, 2023, the Cessna Citation was flying from Elizabethton, in eastern Tennessee, to Long Island, New York when the pilot stopped responding to air traffic control. The jet rose to 34,000 feet and flew over Long Island and then turned back to the southwest, flying over Washington and into Virginia. When the US Air Force F-16s caught up with the plane, they could see someone motionless and slumped over in the cockpit and no movement in the cabin, CNN previously reported. Minutes later, the Citation crashed into the forest near Montebello, Virginia, leaving a crater in the ground. The NTSB found based on the lack of response to air traffic controllers, tracking data and the fighter jet pilots’ observations, it is “likely that the pilot of the accident airplane became incapacitated during the climb to cruise altitude.” The plane was then directed by the autopilot for another 300 miles until it was no longer able to maintain control. Five things on the plane were overdue for maintenance inspections at the time of the ******, including a co-pilot oxygen mask, the NTSB found. An additional 26 problems were noted on the aircraft a month earlier, “including several related to the pressurization and environmental control system,” but the owner chose not to address them, the board reported. Two days before the ******, maintenance workers also saw the pilot’s oxygen mask was missing and oxygen levels were so low that passenger masks would not have worked. The 69-year-old pilot, later identified as Jeff Hefner, was a retired commercial airline captain and had nearly 35,000 hours experience flying planes. He had some medical conditions, but the NTSB found no evidence of a high incapacitation risk or improper use of medications . The jet was owned by Encore Motors of Melbourne, Florida. The owner’s daughter and 2-year-old granddaughter were on the aircraft when it crashed. Hypoxia related to altitude likely explains the incapacitation of those on board, the NTSB’s report said. Hypoxia is a shortage of oxygen in the blood. “According to the FAA Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, impairing effects from hypoxia are often vague and are experienced differently by different individuals; they include confusion, disorientation, diminished judgment and reactions, worsened motor coordination, difficulty communicating and performing simple tasks, a false sense of well-being, diminished consciousness, and, if conditions aren’t remedied or mitigated, death,” the report said. Microsoft to lay off 6,000 workers despite streak of profitable quarters | Microsoft Microsoft to lay off 6,000 workers despite streak of profitable quarters | Microsoft Microsoft says it is laying off nearly 3% of its entire workforce. The tech giant didn’t disclose the total amount of lost jobs, but it will amount to about 6,000 people. Microsoft employed 228,000 full-time workers as of last June, the last time it reported its annual headcount. About 55% of those workers were in the US. Microsoft, based in Redmond, Washington, said the layoffs will be across all levels and geographies but will focus on reducing management levels. Notices went out on Tuesday. “We continue to implement organizational changes necessary to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace,” a statement from the company reads. Microsoft announced a smaller round of performance-based layoffs in January. But the 3% cuts will be Microsoft’s biggest reported layoffs since early 2023, when the company cut 10,000 workers, almost 5% of its workforce, joining other tech companies that were scaling back their pandemic-era expansions. skip past newsletter promotion A weekly dive in to how technology is shaping our lives Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. The company’s chief financial officer, Amy Hood, said on an April earnings call that the company was focused on “building high-performing teams and increasing our agility by reducing layers with fewer managers”. 25. ‘Might be the coolest … we’ve ever seen’ ‘Might be the coolest … we’ve ever seen’ South Korean automaker Hyundai has unveiled a new version of its hydrogen-powered Nexo SUV. With its sleek, futuristic looks, it’s certainly a head-turner. In a preview, Car and Driver said that it “might be the coolest FCEV [fuel cell electric vehicle]” the publication had ever seen. It’s not just about aesthetics; the new version represents a substantial performance upgrade from the older model. While the engine is much more powerful, Autocar India reported that its most impressive feature is its range. Internal testing by Hyundai has found that its larger hydrogen tank could keep the engine running for 435 miles (700 kilometers). It’s not the quickest of cats, accelerating from 0 to 62 miles per hour in 7.8 seconds, but that’s a pretty marked improvement from the older model’s sluggish 9.2 seconds. Hydrogen cars offer several significant advantages. First, like electric vehicles, they do not produce any harmful emissions. With hydrogen-powered cars, the only byproduct is water vapor. Also, like electric vehicles, hydrogen cars are easier and cheaper to maintain. Hydrogen can provide better fuel economy than a gas-powered car. So why aren’t hydrogen-powered cars receiving the same level of attention as electric vehicles? Watch now: How bad is a gas stove for your home’s indoor air quality? The main issue is a lack of infrastructure, with few hydrogen-fueling stations worldwide. Additionally, hydrogen is expensive and is typically made by utilizing non-renewable natural gas. It’s also very difficult to store and transport. For almost all American consumers, the Nexo is a no-go unless they live in California. Due to a lack of fueling infrastructure, the previous-generation Nexo was only sold in limited numbers in the Golden State. This time around, because of supply-chain uncertainties and tariffs on automobile imports, it’s unlikely the car will reach American shores. However, the world’s largest car market, China, is much better-positioned to make the most of hydrogen-powered vehicles. If you were going to purchase an EV, which of these factors would be most important to you? Cost Battery range Power and speed The way it looks Click your choice to see results and speak your mind. According to Fuel Cell Works, there are over 500 hydrogen fueling stations in China, while South Korea has around 200. In April, one was opened on Jeju Island, a popular vacation and honeymoon destination. While there won’t be many hydrogen-powered cars on American roads, they will offer an essential alternative in better-suited markets around the world. The future is likely to be electric, but hydrogen-powered cars are a promising alternative bet as well.
