Databricks is buying database startup Neon for about $1 billion
Databricks co-founder and CEO Ali Ghodsi.
Databricks
Data analytics startup Databricks said Wednesday that it’s buying Neon, a cloud-based database software vendor, for about $1 billion.
It’s the latest big deal for Databricks, which bought artificial intelligence model training startup MosaicML for $1.3 billion in 2023 and paid over $1 billion last year for data optimization startup Tabular.
Neon has over 18,000 customers, Databricks said in a statement. Clients include OpenAI, Adobe, Boston Consulting Group, Replit and Vercel, according to Neon’s website.
Many developers have flocked to Neon, which is open source and billed as an alternative to top cloud provider Amazon Web Services’ Aurora Postgres database service. The open-source PostgreSQL database originated in the 1980s. Supabase, a startup whose tools have become popular with “vibe-coding” tools such as Lovable and Figma’s recently announced Figma Make, is also based on PostgreSQL.
Cloud providers Google and Microsoft have their own options for running PostgreSQL databases. Databricks sells software that can help with cleaning up data, executing queries and running AI models.
Microsoft, Snowflake and Databricks have all invested in Neon, whose co-founder and CEO is former Meta and Microsoft engineer Nikita Shamgunov. After leaving Meta, Shamgunov ran database startup SingleStore, formerly known as MemSQL.
Neon charges based on the amount of computing and storage each customer uses per month. Its software can run in Amazon and Microsoft’s clouds.
Founded in 2021, Neon is a distributed company, with over 130 employees, according to a job description.
Databricks, based in San Francisco, was founded in 2013 and was valued at $62 billion in a $10 billion financing announced in December. Some of the money was earmarked for acquisitions.

Russian Election Expert Grigory Melkonyants Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison, State Media Report
Russian Election Expert Grigory Melkonyants Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison, State Media Report
The head of Russia’s only independent election watchdog was sentenced on Wednesday to five years in prison after being convicted of working with an “undesirable” organization, according to Russian news agencies and his attorney.
Grigory Melkonyants, a co-founder of the Russian election monitoring group Golos, was jailed in 2023 after President Vladimir V. Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine and led a broad crackdown at home. Charged with “organizing the activities of an undesirable organization,” Mr. Melkonyants, 44, pleaded not guilty when his trial opened last September.
On Wednesday, he was convicted in a Moscow court and sentenced to five years in a prison colony, his lawyer, Mikhail Biryukov, told The New York Times.
Golos, which was founded in 2000 and documented widespread election fraud, was labeled a “foreign agent” by the Russian authorities in 2013. But the charges against Mr. Melkonyants relate to the group’s past affiliation with the European Network of Election Monitoring Organizations, which the Russian authorities declared “undesirable” in 2021 — making any association with it a potential crime. Golos has said it terminated its participation with the association following the decision.
The “undesirable” label has been used to outlaw unwanted groups, including NGOs and media organizations, and crack down on dissent. But Mr. Melkonyants was apolitical, Roman Udot, a longtime colleague who lives in exile, said.
He noted that while countless civil activists fled Russia following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Mr. Melkonyants insisted on staying put and focusing on his expertise, without taking sides.
Golos — which means “vote” in Russian — documented extensive voting irregularities during the 2011 parliamentary elections. Anger about those violations sparked the biggest protests to date against Mr. Putin’s rule and spurred a broader opposition movement led by the late Aleksei A. Navalny.
After mounting pressure from the Russian authorities, Golos was designated a foreign agent in 2013. But it was only after the war in Ukraine started that Russia’s security services cracked down harder on the group, Mr. Udot said.
Following his arrest, Mr. Melkonyants was listed as a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International, which said the election expert was being “persecuted solely for his civil activism.”

The title of The Super Mario Bros Movie sequel has accidentally been revealed early
The title of The Super Mario Bros Movie sequel has accidentally been revealed early
The title of the sequel to The Super Mario Bros Movie has accidentally been revealed early by NBCUniversal.
In a press release published on the NBCUniversal website for its Upfront Showcase, the company revealed the name of the second Mario movie in a section on Peacock streaming, referring to it as Super Mario World.
“An exciting range of films from Universal Pictures, Focus Features, DreamWorks Animation and Illumination were presented, including Megan 2.0, Nobody 2, Bad Guys 2, How to Train Your Dragon, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, ****** Phone 2, HIM, The Phoenician Scheme, Super Mario World, Shrek, and Minions,” the press release stated.
“These films stream first exclusively on Peacock after their theatrical and PVOD windows, making it a uniquely positioned powerhouse for blockbuster success — driving viewership, premium advertising opportunities and cultural impact with must-watch entertainment experiences such as Wicked.”
The statement has since been edited on the NBCUniversal website, with the Super Mario World name removed, suggesting it may have been revealed too early.
The name would make sense, given how the original film ends (spoilers follow in the next few paragraphs).
In a post-credits sequence at the end of The Super Mario Bros movie, the film cuts to the sewers under New York and reveals that there’s a Yoshi egg sitting there. As the egg starts to hatch, the camera cuts to ****** and Yoshi’s trademark “Yoshi” cry can be heard.
Given that Super Mario World on the SNES marked the debut of Yoshi, then, it seems that Yoshi will form the main basis of the second movie’s plot.
The Super Mario Bros Movie grossed a total of $1.36 billion worldwide, second only that year to Barbie ($1.44 billion). It was the third-largest grossing PG movie in US history, and the 17th overall, out-selling such movies as The Dark Knight, Frozen II and every Star Wars movie except for Episode VII and VIII.
Last year Nintendo and Illumination confirmed that the second movie, which it said was based on “the world of Super Mario Bros” (giving more credence to the Super Mario World title), will be released on April 3, 2026.

Jefferies downgrades this electric vehicle stock, calls demand outlook ‘downbeat’
Jefferies downgrades this electric vehicle stock, calls demand outlook ‘downbeat’
Jefferies backed into a more neutral rating on Rivian shares. Analyst Philippe Houchois downgraded shares of the electric vehicle maker to hold from buy. Houchois’ $16 price target reflects 7.6% upside from Tuesday’s close. “Rivian still needs to demonstrate sustainable positive gross margin and a more capital-efficient business model,” Houchois wrote in a Wednesday note to clients. Houchois pointed out that while the company’s first-quarter earnings numbers were helped by a change in accounting, there was sill progress in bringing down costs for the R1 models and overseeing cash. He also said the company has a brand equity story worth appreciating. Indeed, Rivian beat analyst expectations when reporting last week. The carmaker also reaffirmed adjusted EBITDA guidance for the full year. But Houchois said Rivian has a “downbeat” demand outlook, with the company cutting its full-year delivery forecast. Because of that, Houchois said he hopes for more information on progress with the R2 line and for the company to find other third-party business opportunities. With the downgrade, Houchois joined the bulk of Wall Street analysts with hold-equivalent ratings. However, the typical analyst expects shares to slide from here. Shares ticked 1.7% before the bell on Wednesday following the call. That marks a turn after shares have risen more than 11% this year, outperforming the broad market.

Kingdom Hearts mobile game Missing Link has been cancelled
Kingdom Hearts mobile game Missing Link has been cancelled
Mobile game Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link has been cancelled, Square Enix has announced.
The game, which was first announced during a Kingdom Hearts 20th anniversary event in 2022, has had multiple closed beta tests since then, but will now not see a full release.
“We have made the decision to cancel the development of Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link,” a statement on the game’s official website says. “We wish to convey our heartfelt apologies to everyone who has been looking forward to the start of service.
“Although we worked hard on developing and adjusting the game in the hope that it would be enjoyed by lots of players, we determined that it would be difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long ******* of time, leading us to the decision to cancel development.
“We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to everyone who gave us their support and assistance with the multiple closed beta tests. We are truly sorry to have to make this announcement.”
The publisher stresses that “the Kingdom Hearts series will continue” and that it is still “hard at work on Kingdom Hearts IV”.
Missing Link was previously described by Square Enix as “a GPS-based action RPG for iOS and Android”, and had players joined by such Disney characters as Mickey, Pinocchio, Winnie the Pooh, Woody, Aladdin, Rapunzel, Ariel, Tinkerbell, Simba and Baymax.
Little information has been shared about Kingdom Hearts 4 since it was announced at the same event as Missing Link. According to Square Enix, the game will mark the beginning of an “epic new storyline” titled the Lost Master Arc.
This storyline may not be fully completed by series co-creator Tetsuya Nomura, who implied last year that he was nearing retirement.
When asked by YoungJump about his plans for the future of the Kingdom Hearts series, Nomura laughed and said, “I only have a few years left until I retire, I have to decide whether to retire first or finish the series first.”
He added: “I’m making Kingdom Hearts 4 now with the intention of it being a story that I will complete.”

Trump and Saudi Crown Prince bask in friendship during Riyadh visit
Trump and Saudi Crown Prince bask in friendship during Riyadh visit
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman reacts next to U.S. President Donald Trump during the Saudi-U.S. Investment Forum, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, May 13, 2025.
Brian Snyder | Reuters
The plenary room of the Ritz Carlton Riyadh was packed to the brim on Tuesday as guests awaited the arrival of U.S. President Donald Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Attendees of the U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum included scores of the world’s most powerful CEOs, among them Elon Musk, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang and BlackRock‘s Larry Fink, to name a few.
The event’s security corralled guests — billionaires and junior consultants alike — into the plenary to wait in suspense while the Saudi and American leaders held their meetings.
“We were locked in the plenary for three hours before they showed up,” Tarik Solomon, head of the American-Saudi business chamber in Riyadh, told CNBC. “Nothing says diplomacy like strategic patience.”
Guests described amusing scenes as Fortune 500 executives sat cross-legged on the floor because of a shortage of seats.
“They put the CEOs on the stage as well for the whole three hours, and they didn’t have anywhere to sit. So they’re like, sitting on the ground, literally, with their legs crossed, talking to each other, which was a funny scene,” one attendee, who asked to remain anonymous due to professional restrictions on speaking to the press, told CNBC.
“The event was really unorganized,” the guest said, but attested to the energy in the room as the president took the stage.
“It was amazing being in that room. No matter what you say about Trump, he is a star. He knows how to work a room.”
Trump stood alone onstage while Lee Greenwood’s patriotic ballad “Proud to be an American” played on the surround-sound speakers before launching into a roughly 50-minute long speech that covered U.S. relations with the region, but focused heavily on his domestic agenda and legacy.
“I feel like I just attended my first Trump rally,” another attendee said, also speaking anonymously due to professional restrictions.
The American leader dedicated much of his speech to praising the Saudi kingdom, with which he has enjoyed warm relations for years, and where he made his first state visit in 2017 during his initial White House term.
“Riyadh is becoming not just a seat of government but a major business, cultural and high-tech capital of the entire world,” Trump said.
“Mohammed, do you sleep at night? How do you sleep?” he said, addressing the 39-year-old crown prince, who was seated directly across from him in the audience. “Critics doubted that it was possible, what you’ve done, but over the past eight years, Saudi Arabia has proved the critics totally wrong.”
The crowd applauded as Trump said, “He’s your greatest representative, greatest representative. And if I didn’t like him, I’d get out of here so fast. You know that, don’t you? He knows me well. I do — I like him a lot. I like him too much.”
Bin Salman sat beaming at the president, often placing his hand on his heart in a gesture of appreciation.
“That’s why we give so much, you know? Too much,” Trump said, smiling. “I like you too much.”
Saudis on social media expressed pride over their de-facto leader’s relationship with the U.S. president, and regional analysts noted the stark difference between this administration’s relationship with the kingdom and that of the Biden administration, which was significantly cooler.
“Trump and MBS? It’s a bromance for the ages,” one summit attendee told CNBC, referring to the crown prince by his initials.
The event’s main news was the announcement of $600 billion in investments by Saudi Arabia into the U.S., including a record $142 billion deal to purchase American weapons.
“Overall, the mood was very optimistic,” Solomon of the American Chamber of Commerce said. “The right people were in the room, and the deals felt less performative this time. Probably because they confirmed $300B+ in real agreements, rather than stitching together flashy $1B headlines.”

‘Very real chance’ Diane Sindall killer remains at large
‘Very real chance’ Diane Sindall killer remains at large
Jonny Humphries
BBC News, Liverpool
Handout
Diane Sindall, 21, had been due to get married when she was ambushed by an unknown killer
Detectives have said there is a “very real chance” the true killer of a young woman murdered in 1986 is still on the streets after a man wrongfully convicted of the frenzied ******* attack was freed.
Peter Sullivan had spent the last 38 years behind bars for the ******* of 21-year-old Diane Sindall in Birkenhead, Merseyside, before he was dramatically acquitted by the Court of Appeal on Tuesday.
Now 68, Mr Sullivan was released from prison after judges heard a DNA profile pointing to an unknown attacker was found after new testing on ****** samples preserved from the crime scene.
Det Ch Supt Karen Jaundrill, head of investigations at Merseyside Police, said the force has since made contact with every man identified in the original investigation and “had not met with any resistance” to DNA screening.
The detective said more than 260 men had been tested and eliminated as a suspect.
She has now appealed for people in the community to come forward if they can think of anyone whose “behaviour they were not happy with” at the time, admitting there was a “very real chance” the killer was still at large.
Miss Sindall was dragged into an alley and beaten to death on 2 August 1986 in an attack detectives at the time described as the worst they had ever been involved in.
Merseyside Police said it had immediately reopened Miss Sindall’s case after being told there was a new DNA profile in 2023, despite Mr Sullivan’s appeal still being in progress at the time.
Det Ch Supt Karen Jaundrill said the force was desperate for information
Det Ch Supt Jaundrill said that while the DNA was the main focus of investigative efforts, her team will rely heavily on people who lived in Birkenhead at the time for answers.
“I’m really hopeful with the work that we are doing but we really are relying on the community, particularly Birkenhead, just to really think about the nature of that investigation at the time,” she said.
“Try and reflect on any individuals that you weren’t happy with at the time.
“It may be that somebody has passed away and you weren’t happy with their behaviour at the time and you think they were linked.
“My ask would be please contact us, regardless of how insignificant you think the information is, and let us judge where that fits into our investigation.”
Miss Sindall, who worked as a florist, had also been doing part-time bar work at the Wellington Pub in Bebington to save up for her upcoming wedding to her fiancé, David Beattie.
Julia Quenzler/BBC
Peter Sullivan held his hand to his face and sobbed when he was told his conviction would be quashed
She began driving to her home in Seacombe in her blue Fiat van but seemingly ran out of petrol, and began walking to what police believe was either a bus stop or an all night garage shortly after 00:00 BST.
Her semi-naked body was discovered partially concealed in an alleyway by a woman walking her dog at about 12:30 BST that day.
She had suffered severe injuries and her death was found to have been caused by repeated blows to the head.
Det Ch Supt Jaundrill said Miss Sindall’s family and fiancé were “fully supportive” of the new investigation and “very much want us” to find her real killer.
Asked about the chances of the true attacker still being on the streets nearly four decades later, she added: “There is a very real chance.
“That’s where I reiterate our dedicated team of investigators are working tirelessly.
“We’re exploiting every opportunity to try and identify who the person is in relation to that DNA sample, but it does come back to that point – we are reliant on the communities, particularly Birkenhead to provide information.”
The force has defended how it investigated the original case, and highlighted that the technology to extract a DNA profile from the ****** samples recovered from Miss Sindall’s body was still many years away at the time of her *******.
Merseyside Police
Peter Sullivan was in his late 20s when he was arrested
It has also pointed to the fact that two other grounds of appeal, related to how Mr Sullivan was interrogated and the admissibility of bite mark evidence, were rejected by appeal court judges.
Det Ch Supt Jaundrill said: “Nobody at Merseyside Police underestimates the impact on Peter Sullivan and I am grateful that the outcome at court will allow him to go out and rebuild his life.
“Our focus remains on finding justice for Diane.”
Mr Sullivan’s solicitor Sarah Myatt said her client was a “private man” and wanted to be “left in peace” to rebuild his life.
Mr Sullivan, in a statement read to the media by Ms Myatt outside the Court of Appeal, had said he was not “angry or bitter” and expressed his wish that the Sindall family get justice.
Ms Myatt, who has represented Mr Sullivan for 20 years, said she had been “honoured” to read those words on his behalf.
“The comments he made about wanting the family to get a resolution, to find peace, that is a true reflection on the man that he is,” she said.

Square Enix reiterates plans for ‘quality over quantity’ and multiformat games going forward
Square Enix reiterates plans for ‘quality over quantity’ and multiformat games going forward
Square Enix has reiterated its plans to focus on “quality over quantity” and release games on multiple formats.
The company announced its new medium-term business plan back in May 2024, which included making its AAA games multiplatform going forward and focusing on producing fewer, better games.
Now, as part of its latest financial results, Square Enix stated that this three-year ‘reboot’ plan has started, with the aim of long-term growth.
According to the publisher, it’s now in the process of establishing a “mid- to long-term pipeline to achieve a shift from quantity to quality”.
It says that once the three-year reboot plan ends – which should happen by the end of its financial year ending March 2027 – it will be in a position to release “major titles mainly in key IP” on a consistent basis.
The plan has involved enhancing productivity by “optimizing the development footprint”, which included the cancellation of numerous projects last year because they were “incompatible” with the new strategy.
“In addition, for titles currently in operation, we have implemented measures to improve profitability, such as expanding platforms, diversifying payment methods, and optimizing operating costs,” it says.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade is coming to Switch 2, highlighting the publisher’s renewed AAA multi-format strategy.
It also notes that by placing all its games “under the management of the same studio” instead of outsourcing titles, the company has “consolidated, accumulated, and shared in-house know-how”, making its products higher quality.
“Under the new management structure, we reviewed all projects at our domestic studios, including HDG and SD titles, and decided to discontinue development of some titles and invest additional funds in titles that require refinement, thereby steadily implementing a strategy of selecting and concentrating development resources,” it said.
Examples of Square Enix’s plan being put in practice have been seen in recent weeks. It was announced last month that Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade will be coming to Nintendo Switch 2, demonstrating the publisher’s commitment to making its ******* titles multi-format.
Its project cancellations have been continuing too, however. Today it was announced that mobile game Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link has been cancelled.

Social Security benefits at risk for defaulted student loan borrowers

Social Security beneficiaries are at risk of receiving a smaller benefit if they’ve fallen behind on their student loans.
The Trump administration recently announced it would move to offset defaulted student loan borrowers’ federal benefits, and warned that payments could be garnished as soon as June.
That involuntary collection activity could have serious consequences on those who rely on the benefits to pay most, if not all, of their bills, consumer advocates say.
More from Personal Finance: Wage garnishment for defaulted student loans to begin What loan forgiveness opportunities remain under Trump Is college still worth it? It is for most, but not all
There are some 2.9 million people age 62 and older with federal student loans, as of the first quarter of 2025, according to Education Department data. That is a 71% increase from 2017, when there were 1.7 million such borrowers, according to the data.
More than 450,000 borrowers in that age group are in default on their federal student loans and likely to be receiving Social Security benefits, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau found.
Here’s what borrowers need to know.
Up to 15% of Social Security benefits can be taken
Social Security recipients can typically see up to 15% of their monthly benefit reduced to pay back their defaulted student debt, but beneficiaries need to be left with at least $750 a month, experts said.
The offset cap is the same “regardless of the type of benefit,” including retirement and disability payments, said higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz.
The 15% offset is calculated from your total benefit amount before any deductions, such as your Medicare premium, Kantrowitz said.
Little notice provided
Student loan borrowers facing offsets of their federal benefits seem to be getting less notice under the Trump administration, Kantrowitz said.
While a 65-day heads-up used to be the norm, it seems the Education Department is now assuming borrowers who are in default were already notified about possible collection activity prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, he said.
“The failure of the U.S. Department of Education to provide the 65-day notice limits the ability of borrowers to challenge the Treasury offset of their Social Security benefit payments,” Kantrowitz said.
Still, borrowers should get at least a 30-day warning, Kantrowitz said. The notice should be sent to your last known address, so borrowers should make sure their loan servicer has their most recent contact information.
The Education Department provided defaulted federal student borrowers with the required notice, a spokesperson told CNBC after collections efforts resumed May 5.
“The notice may be sent only once, and borrowers may have received this notice before Covid,” the spokesperson said.
You can still contest offset
Once you receive a notice that your Social Security benefits will be offset, you should have the option to challenge the collection activity, Kantrowitz said. The notice is supposed to include information on how you can do so, he said.
You may be able to prevent the offset if you can prove a financial hardship or have a pending student loan discharge, Kantrowitz added.
“Borrowers who receive these notices should not panic,” said Nancy Nierman, assistant director of the Education Debt Consumer Assistance Program. “They should reach out for help as soon as possible.”
Getting out of default
The best way to avoid the offset of your Social Security benefits is to get current on your loans, said Betsy Mayotte, president of The Institute of Student Loan Advisors, a nonprofit.
You can contact the government’s Default Resolution Group and pursue several different avenues to get out of default, including enrolling in an income-driven repayment plan.
“If Social Security is their only income, their payment under those plans would likely be zero,” Mayotte said.

What to Know About Mohammad Sinwar, the ****** Leader Targeted by Israel
What to Know About Mohammad Sinwar, the ****** Leader Targeted by Israel
The Israeli military struck the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis on Tuesday evening in an attempt to kill Mohammad Sinwar, one of ******’s top leaders in the enclave, according to Israeli military officials.
There was no immediate confirmation that Israel was successful.
Throughout the war in Gaza, Israel has sought to eliminate ******’s hierarchy, methodically assassinating the group’s top officials. After such killings, the Israeli military has often taken weeks to confirm a target’s death, while ****** has sometimes taken months.
Here’s what we know about Mr. Sinwar, who has survived such assassination attempts before.
He is Yahya Sinwar’s younger brother.
Mohammad Sinwar was born in Khan Younis in 1975. He is the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar, who masterminded the ******-led attacks on Israel that started the war in Gaza in October 2023 and in whose footsteps Mohammad Sinwar followed for much of his life.
Their family fled Ashkelon, Israel, during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war to a refugee camp in Khan Younis.
The younger Mr. Sinwar is believed to have joined ****** in the early 1990s as Yahya was rising up the organization’s ranks. In 1991, he was arrested by the Israeli military for suspected terror activity, spending less than a year in Israeli custody. He was also jailed for several years in the 1990s in the West Bank city of Ramallah by the ************ Authority.
He is known as ‘the Shadow.’
Like his elder brother, Mohammad Sinwar has long been wanted by the Israeli authorities. He is said to have been targeted in six assassination attempts by 2021.
In 2014, the Israeli military believed that it had killed the younger Mr. Sinwar, only to discover that he had survived. In late 2023, the Israeli military said on social media that it had searched his office in a raid on a ****** military post and training compound in Gaza, “where military doctrine documents were located.”
But both Sinwar brothers continued to elude Israel, until Yahya, then the political leader of ******, was killed by the Israeli military in October.
In a 2022 interview with Al Jazeera, it was reported that Mohammad was so elusive that he would not be recognized by most people in Gaza, and had even missed his father’s ******** to maintain secrecy about his whereabouts.
He is believed to have spent much of the war underground in an effort to escape Israeli airstrikes. But in recent months, he had been seen aboveground in Khan Younis, including at Nasser Hospital, according to a Middle Eastern intelligence official.
On Tuesday, the Israeli military said its forces had struck a ****** command center underneath the European Hospital near Khan Younis. The Gazan health ministry said that at least six people were killed and at least 40 others wounded.
He holds a prominent role in ******.
Mohammad Sinwar is believed to be one of the most senior ****** military commanders left in Gaza.
In addition to Yahya Sinwar, Israel has eliminated Muhammad Deif, commander of ******’s military wing who was killed in an Israeli airstrike in July; and Ismail Haniyeh, the group’s political chief, who was killed on a visit to Iran in July, when he was attending the inauguration of Iran’s new president in Tehran.
By targeting Mohammad Sinwar, the Israeli military may hope to remove a particularly hard-line negotiator. He is known for opposing compromises with Israel in cease-fire negotiations, according to two Israeli officials and the Middle Eastern intelligence official, just as his elder brother had. He has also refused to agree to any truce that would include dismantling and disarming ******, which Israel has insisted upon.
In January, The Wall Street Journal reported that the younger Mr. Sinwar had been recruiting new fighters for ****** in Gaza.
In the Al Jazeera 2022 interview, Mohammad Sinwar, then a senior commander in ******’s military wing, spoke about the failed assassination attempts against him and about resisting Israel, saying, “For us, shooting rockets at Tel Aviv is easier than drinking water.”
He is linked to the abduction of Gilad Shalit.
Israel has accused the younger brother of being one of the people responsible for planning an attack that led to the abduction of the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit in 2006.
Mr. Shalit was captured in a cross-border raid into Israel and held in Gaza for five years. Mohammad Sinwar is said to have held the soldier captive himself for some time.
The soldier was exchanged in 2011 for more than 1,000 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons. Among those freed was Yahya Sinwar.
In 2022, the younger Mr. Sinwar told Al Jazeera he believed that such trades could help secure the release of thousands of Palestinians held in Israel. The next year, ****** abducted about 250 hostages from Israel, taking them to Gaza for use as bargaining chips in future negotiations.
Reporting was contributed by Ronen Bergman, Adam Rasgon, Patrick Kingsley and Aaron Boxerman.

The Precinct Review [Capsule Computers]
The Precinct Review [Capsule Computers]
Travis Bruno of Capsule Computers writes:
“Usually in video games players end up facing off against the cops or running from them in one way or another. It might be something as simple as racing away from a police cruiser in a racing game or shooting your way out of a bank robbery. Few titles actually place players in the role of the police themselves tend to either fall into racing games that see players acting almost the exact same as they would anyways or in a complete simulation that tries to hold players to the strictest possible rules.
Now here we have The Precinct from Fallen Tree Games, who originally developed a similar game that had players once again on the opposite side of the law, American Fugitive.Taking what they learned with their previous efforts and looking to create a police game that tries to blend the line between arcade action and simulation, have they been successful with The Precinct?

Burberry to cut 1,700 jobs as designer suffers heavy losses
Burberry to cut 1,700 jobs as designer suffers heavy losses
Luxury fashion firm Burberry has said it could cut some 1,700 jobs as part of plans to reduce costs by 2027.
The British designer brand – famed for its distinctive camel, red and ****** check pattern – announced the proposed savings on Wednesday as it reported a £66m loss in the last financial year.
The proposed job cuts would reduce its global workforce by almost a fifth and include potential redundancies at its Castleford factory in West Yorkshire.
Burberry chief executive Joshua Schulman said the majority of job losses would come from its head office teams around the world, but said the cuts would “naturally” be focused in the ***, where most of its staff are based.
He confirmed staff rotas would be reorganised and that night shifts at its factory in Castleford, which makes trench coats priced from £1,000 to £10,000 each, would be scrapped.
“For a long time we have had overcapacity at that facility, and that is simply not sustainable,” Mr Schulman said.
“But I want to be very clear that we are making this change to safeguard our *** manufacturing, and in fact we will be making a significant investment to renovate this factory in the second half.”
Burberry said it would align “schedules with peak store traffic” in its shops, which would result in the reduction of some jobs.
It added savings would also come from “operating expenses, with increased efficiency of spend in procurement and real estate”.
The company said the cuts were “subject to consultation where applicable”.
Burberry was founded in 1856 and has been making its famous raincoats in Yorkshire since 1972.
The designer brand previously announced £40m cost-savings programme in November, meaning it now plans to create the combined annualised savings of £100m by Spring 2027.
“The continued resilience of our outerwear and scarf categories reaffirms my belief that we have the most opportunity where we have the most authenticity,” said Mr Schulman, who was appointed chief executive in July last year.
“While we are operating against a difficult macroeconomic backdrop and are still in the early stages of our turnaround, I am more optimistic than ever that Burberry’s best days are ahead,” he added.

Next Update Should Give the Illuminate Orbital Lasers, and Super Earth Magnetic Accelerator Cannon Side Missions
Next Update Should Give the Illuminate Orbital Lasers, and Super Earth Magnetic Accelerator Cannon Side Missions
The Illuminate have fully returned in Helldivers 2 and launched a full-scale invasion of Super Earth. We’re seeing new enemy types on the battlefield, like Stingrays and the grotesque Fleshmob terrorizing our forces. According to fan assumptions, we might see the Illuminate forces get an orbital cannon next.
The conflict also seems like it could take a turn, strangely reminiscent of Halo. And if we’re thinking of Halo, what if we had some missions to secure a new type of weaponry inspired by it? What if we had our own Magnetic Accelerator Cannon (MAC) as a new mission? We could consolidate our defenses even further with it.

Arrowhead’s recent May 13 update confirmed what a lot of us feared. The Illuminate isn’t done with its business with Super Earth. The Illuminate has launched a full-scale invasion of Super Earth, and Arrowhead Game Studios has dropped major changes into Helldivers 2 to keep pace with the rising galactic stakes.
Comment byu/solarevoid from discussion inhelldivers2
The Illuminate has brought its full force with new enemies like the terrifying Stingray air units. These are jet fighters capable of strafing entire squads from above. Then we see the new Crescent Overseer, which bombards where Helldivers take cover to force us into the open. There’s also the grotesque Fleshmob, a massive biomechanical monstrosity made of stitched-together Voteless parts.
Reddit is ablaze with speculation that the next update will change that. Some players have jokingly (and seriously) proposed that the Illuminate will have its own counterpart to the orbital laser that we currently use. The concept is more than scary because our own laser destroys most enemies in a matter of seconds.
Attention, Helldivers: This is a Galactic Emergency.
The true Illuminate invasion has begun. In a sudden and completely unprovoked offensive manoeuvre, the full Illuminate fleet is emerging from the Meridia Singularity. Nothing is safe – not even the Heart of Democracy itself. pic.twitter.com/2hgtK6akMb
— HELLDIVERS 2 (@helldivers2) May 13, 2025
If the Illuminate were to have that kind of firepower against us, we would be quite screwed. But it’d make for some awesome gameplay. Imagine you’re in the middle of a mission and suddenly hear a warning from command that the enemy has launched an orbital cannon, and you have seconds to run away from the impact zone or get obliterated completely.
Helldivers 2 is going through some big changes
The war is about to get to the next level very soon. | Image Credit: Arrowhead Game Studios
Things could also take a turn to some Halo-style changes. What if we also got some side missions for a Magnetic Accelerator Cannon, like what we saw in Halo? The MAC is a weapon that Halo fans will recognize as a planet-shaking space artillery platform. Imagine if this kind of weaponry were available to Helldivers or the Illuminate. The battle would get so much more intense.
As this galactic war heats up, Helldivers 2 also gives players better tools to survive. The latest update introduced an extensive weapon customization system. Helldivers can now level up primary weapons through missions, unlocking scopes, barrels, under-barrel attachments, and cosmetic patterns from old Warbonds.
We will need these upgrades to battle the full force of the Illuminate. Helldivers 2 may have started as a satirical, over-the-top co-op shooter, but we are now part of a true interstellar war. So get up, put on that armor, and set out to defend Super Earth and fight for Democracy!

An engineer who worked for Palantir for 8 years says the company’s interviews were ‘impossible to prepare for’
An engineer who worked for Palantir for 8 years says the company’s interviews were ‘impossible to prepare for’
A former employee said Palantir’s cofounders ran “strange” interviews.Brendan McDermid/REUTERS
A former Palantir engineer described how the company interviews and what it looks for in talent.
The company seeks independent thinkers with broad interests and intense competitiveness, he said.
Dozens of Palantir alumni have founded startups backed by top VC firms.
In an industry known for quirky interview questions, a former Palantir employee’s account of the company’s early hiring practices stands out.
In an episode of Lenny’s Podcast released on Sunday, a former Palantir engineer and startup founder talked about hiring practices and work culture in the company’s early days.
In order to get hired, a candidate had to be interviewed by one of the founders, said Nabeel Qureshi, who worked at the data analysis company for nearly eight years until 2023.
“The interviews were pretty strange,” Qureshi said on the podcast.
“You’d be chatting about philosophy for an hour and a half and it would very much just be like he would pick a topic out of thin air,” Qureshi said, referring to interviews with the Palantir cofounder Stephen Cohen.
“It was impossible to prepare for,” Qureshi added. “He would just go very, very deep and try and test the limits of your understanding. But it would really just be a fun conversation and then if you pass the vibe check, you’d be in.”
Qureshi did not mention if the company still engages in these hiring practices.
Palantir was founded in 2003 by Cohen, Peter Thiel, Joe Lonsdale, and Alex Karp. It provides businesses and militaries, including those of the US, Israel, and Ukraine, with AI models. It went public in 2020 and faced backlash last year because of its partnership with the Israeli Ministry of Defense.
Qureshi said that Palantir screened for three particular types of people: people who were independent-minded and weren’t afraid to push back, people with broader intellectual interests, and those who were “intensely competitive.”
He added that Palantir also attracted people outside of tech, such as military vets, because it was looking for people who were not just technically qualified but also aligned with the company’s mission.
Palantir and Cohen did not respond to requests for comment from Business Insider about details about the company’s interview process, and whether it still asks candidates about topics like philosophy.
Qureshi also talked about how the company’s culture and business practices were a fertile ground to raise future founders.
He said Palantir instilled founder-friendly mindsets, such as telling employees to solve one customer’s problem first because that solution could later be expanded to bring in more business. The company also asked employees to jump on a plane and meet customers in person because “the vibe is completely different,” he said.
Story Continues
Palantir has at least 39 alumni who run their own startups, including Lonsdale and the founders of the defense-tech startup Anduril. “Palantir ******” companies have been backed by top Venture Capital firms, including a16z, Sequoia, Accel, and Y Combinator.
Karp, the company’s CEO, has on several occasions boasted that the company’s employees are among the best in the business. Earlier this year, *** spoke to half a dozen tech recruiters about the power of having Palantir on your résumé — and while some said results matter more than the name of a company, they generally agreed that Palantir employees are “top-notch” hires.
Palantir is worth close to $280 billion. Its stock is up 57% because of its exposure to AI.

Bitcoin ETF Inflows Stutter Despite $2T Market Cap Milestone
Bitcoin ETF Inflows Stutter Despite $2T Market Cap Milestone
New demand from retail investors is rising, but key institutional signals suggest a potential cooling in short-term momentum
exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded just $5 million in net inflows on Monday, marking the lowest single-day total since April 14.
The muted ETF activity comes despite a sharp rally that lifted Bitcoin to a three-month high of $105,819 before closing at $102,729 due to profit-taking.
While the news of easing trade tensions initially boosted market optimism, institutional investors appeared hesitant to increase their ETF exposure at current levels.
BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (NASDAQ:) saw the largest inflow on the day, attracting $69.41 million, according to Farside.
Grayscale’s Bitcoin Trust ETF (NYSE:), however, saw a $32.92 million net outflow, reflecting mixed institutional sentiment.
Institutional Enthusiasm Stagnates Despite BTC Breakout
The $5.2 million total net inflow was notable not only for its size but for its timing. Monday’s surge was fueled by a 90-day tariff pause between the U.S. and China.
These policy shifts typically catalyze cross-asset rallies. Yet Bitcoin ETF demand failed to keep pace with the market move, pointing to a possible disconnect between price action and capital flow.
This hesitation may stem from technical resistance and psychological barriers. Liquidation heatmaps shared by Coinglass also show concentrated short positions near $105,337, hinting that investors may be wary of further upside unless a clean breakout occurs.
Despite the day’s weakness, BlackRock’s IBIT has now accrued a historical net inflow of $44.78 billion, underscoring continued long-term confidence.
Grayscale’s GBTC, in contrast, stands at $22.95 billion in historical inflows, reflecting outflows tied to fee differentials and structural shifts following its ETF conversion.
Bitcoin’s Market Cap Hits $2T, But Momentum Traders Stay on the Sidelines
The broader market story tells a tale of divergence. Bitcoin’s market capitalization surpassed $2 trillion last week, which is the highest since January 31.
However, on-chain data from Glassnode shows that while first-time buyers remain active, momentum traders have largely pulled back.
“BTC Supply Mapping shows sustained strength in new demand,” Glassnode wrote yesterday on X.
“First-Time Buyers RSI has held at 100 all week,” the company added, signaling strong inflows from retail wallets engaging with Bitcoin for the first time.
This metric measures relative strength in activity among these new participants over a 30-day window. A value of 100 indicates sustained peak activity, suggesting persistent engagement from newcomers to the market.
In contrast, the same data shows that momentum buyers, which typically enter positions once an uptrend is established, have an RSI of around 11, signaling minimal participation.
Consolidation Risks Rise as Investor Behavior Splits
While Bitcoin’s recent rally has rekindled optimism, the data suggests that institutional capital is not yet fully committed to this leg of the cycle
Instead, the market may be entering a phase of digestion, where strong retail inflows are offset by larger players taking profits or waiting for more convincing macro signals.
At the time of writing, Bitcoin trades just above $103,000, with funding rates still positive and bullish sentiment intact among leveraged retail participants.
But without renewed ETF demand and broader momentum participation, analysts warn that the $105,000 resistance may continue to act as a ceiling.
