  2. Woman connected to the Zizians fired the bullet that killed a Vermont border agent, report says Woman connected to the Zizians fired the bullet that killed a Vermont border agent, report says A woman charged in the January killing of a U.S. Border Patrol agent during a Vermont traffic stop fired the bullet that struck him in the neck, authorities say in a new report. Another agent fired back during the Jan. 20 stop, wounding Teresa Youngblut and killing her companion, Felix Bauckholt, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a statement Wednesday. Youngblut and Bauckholt were affiliated with the Zizians, a cultlike group that has also been linked to killings in Pennsylvania and California, authorities allege. The shootout happened after an agent pulled them over on Interstate 91 a few miles (kilometers) from the ********* border. About 30 minutes into the stop, the agents asked Youngblut and Bauckholt to get out of their car to be questioned, the border agency said in its report, which doesn’t name anyone involved. They reported that Youngblut “suddenly drew a firearm and opened fire,” killing the agent David Maland, it said. One of four agents on the scene returned fire, striking Youngblut once in the arm and once in the leg. The same agent reported that Bauckholt began drawing a firearm from his side and that he ordered him to stop. The agent said the man “failed to comply” and that he fired twice on the man, striking Bauckholt twice in the chest. Two minutes after that exchange, an agent radioed in that another had suffered a critical gunshot wound to the neck, the report said. Agents and a Vermont state trooper rendered aid to him and he was driven to a hospital, where he died. Youngblut was arrested and police attempted to place a tourniquet on her leg while awaiting emergency responders, according to the report. In total, that agent fired about eight rounds and Youngblut fired four, according to the border agency. Two guns were later recovered from the scene that had been in Youngblut and Bauckholt’s possession, authorities said. On Jan. 19, a border patrol agent assigned to a Homeland Security Investigations Task Force notified the border patrol Newport Station management of a report that the couple had checked into a hotel wearing ****** tactical gear on Jan. 13, according to the report. At least one of them was carrying a gun and both arrived in the Prius they were later in during the shootout. The agent advised the Newport station that state and federal law enforcement officials “had previously identified the male as a ******* citizen, in possession of a H1B visa with unknown immigration status.” Youngblut is charged with intentionally using a deadly weapon towards federal law enforcement, and using and discharging a firearm during an assault with a deadly weapon. She pleaded not guilty. When asked to comment on the report, Fabienne Boisvert-DeFazio, a spokesperson for the U. S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Vermont, said the office “does not comment on ongoing cases beyond the public record.” Source link #Woman #connected #Zizians #fired #bullet #killed #Vermont #border #agent #report Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  5. Former prime minister arrested over alleged links to deadly clashes Former prime minister arrested over alleged links to deadly clashes Chad’s former prime minister and opposition leader, Succès Masra, has been arrested over alleged links to clashes which took place on Wednesday in the south west of the country, a public prosecutor has said. He is suspected of spreading hateful messages on social media linked to the violence in which at least 42 people died, Oumar Mahamat Kedelaye said. Masra’s Transformers party said he had been “kidnapped” by military officers in the early hours of the morning” and denounced his detention, which it says was “carried out outside of any known judicial procedure”. Masra is a fierce critic of President Mahamat Déby and claimed to have defeated him in elections last year. Masra said his victory had been stolen “from the people” although the official results said Déby had won with 61% of the vote. Wednesday’s clashes broke out in the village of Mandakao, in Logone Occidental province near the Cameroonian border. “Messages were circulated, notably on social networks, calling on the population to arm themselves against other citizens,” Mr Kedelaye said. It is not entirely clear what caused the violence, but one source told the AFP news agency that it is believed it was triggered by a land dispute between farmers from the Ngambaye community and Fulani herdsmen. There has been a troubling recent pattern of violence between local farmers and herders, with the farmers accusing the latter of grazing animals on their land. More than 80 others have also been detained in connection with the clashes. Masra briefly served as interim prime minister of the transitional government between January and May 2024. His party boycotted legislative polls last December due to concerns over the transparency of the electoral process. The Déby family has ruled Chad for more than three decades. The military installed Déby as Chad’s leader after his father, Idriss Déby Itno, was killed by rebels in 2021. 6. Young Hearts Albany receives $100,000 Community Bank grant to help children suffering from domestic violence Young Hearts Albany receives $100,000 Community Bank grant to help children suffering from domestic violence A counselling service that helps children exposed to family and domestic violence has received a $100,000 grant from Community Bank Albany. The bank has awarded the funding, which will be allocated at $50,000 a year for two years, to Anglicare WA’s Young Hearts Albany program. Young Hearts Albany clinical and counselling co-ordinator Mahsa Anderson said there was a “significant need” for family and domestic violence services in the region. “With increased funding, we can reduce waiting lists, provide more one-on-one counselling sessions, and offer group programs that help children feel less alone in their experiences,” she said. The money will also support training for counsellors and help create child-friendly spaces at both the Anglicare office and a local primary school. The Albany organisation helped 38 different clients in 2023-24, 15 of which were children and 23 parents or guardians. This led to a total of 346 sessions, 17 of which were for counselling. “The impact of Young Hearts reaches far beyond the counselling rooms in the Albany office,” Ms Anderson said. “When children are supported to heal from trauma early, we see improvements in their self-esteem, relationships, school engagement and emotional regulation. “This ripple effect strengthens families and the broader community, breaking cycles of violence and fostering resilience.” Community Bank Albany chair Sarah Bowles said the grant would make the Young Hearts program sustainable. “Our commitment will provide job security, project continuation and delivery of a service to our local community,” she said. “This program aligns with everything we stand for; helping to build a stronger, safer and more connected community.” If you or someone you know is experiencing family violence, phone 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732) or the Crisis Care Helpline on 1800 199 008. 10. ICC chief prosecutor Karim Khan steps down until ******* misconduct probe ends ICC chief prosecutor Karim Khan steps down until ******* misconduct probe ends The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) has temporarily stepped down until a ******* misconduct probe against him is concluded. Karim Khan will take leave until the end of the external investigation, which began late last year, and his deputy prosecutors will run the office in his absence, the ICC said in a statement. Previous media reports cited a document outlining accusations against Mr Khan, understood to include unwanted ******* touching and “abuse”. Mr Khan has denied the allegations, which were reported to the court’s governing body in October last year. Several organisations and ICC staff members had previously called for Mr Khan to step down during the investigation. It is unknown when the external investigation – led by the UN Office of Internal Oversight Services – will come to an end. An anonymous source told Reuters news agency that Mr Khan spoke to UN investigators last week for a final interview as part of the process. Reuters reported that it had seen a letter Mr Khan sent to his staff confirming his temporary leave, and in which the prosecutor said his position had been kept under constant review. “My decision is driven by deep and unwavering commitment to the credibility of our Office and the Court, and to safeguard the integrity of the process and fairness to all involved,” he reportedly said in the letter. Shortly after the allegations came to light last year, Mr Khan asked the ICC’s watchdog, the Independent Oversight Mechanism (IOM), to conduct an internal investigation into the claims. The court’s governing body later decided to pursue it externally to “ensure a fully independent, impartial and fair process,” its president said. The investigation comes during intense scrutiny of the ICC and Mr Khan after his request for arrest warrants linked to the Israel-****** war – including for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for alleged war crimes in Gaza. Israel is not an ICC member and its government, along with Netanyahu, strongly rejected the accusations. In February this year, US President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on ICC officials while Netanyahu visited Washington DC. The ICC said the US sanctions have put the court itself at risk and called on its member states and global civil society to “stand united for justice and fundamental human rights”. 11. The Gargantuan Number of Countries That Blocked Stellar Blade Even Stunned Shift up The Gargantuan Number of Countries That Blocked Stellar Blade Even Stunned Shift up Controversies have been a part of Stellar Blade ever since its initial reveal back in 2021, and with the game launching on PC next month, new problems circle the highly anticipated release. You can already imagine why PC players are excited to start the game, but this time, the case is different and resembles a previous Sony debacle. While censorship and suggestive outfits have been a topic of debate and discourse for the game, the new problem stems from the fact that it has been blocked in a concerningly huge number of countries, something which even boggled the developers behind the game. Stellar Blade‘s PC release has been blocked in more than 130 countries It’s not news that Stellar Blade is officially coming to PC on June 11, but apparently, the Steam version of the acclaimed title has been blocked in over 130 countries, which is such a baffling number, even Shift Up, the developers behind the game, are stunned and confused, expressing their bewilderment on X. This information comes from SteamDB, which confirms that Stellar Blade will not be available for purchase or gifting on Steam in more than a hundred countries. Players living in countries like Bangladesh, Algeria, Kenya, and many more will unfortunately, not be able to play the upcoming release. Shift Up shared the trailer for the PC release on social media, but the devs were soon flooded with screenshots from players showing the game wasn’t available in their region, which shocked them. Concerns about requiring a PlayStation Network account were also debunked, as they clarified that the game on PC will not require a PSN account. The PC version of Stellar Blade does not require a PSN account. May I ask where you live? — StellarBlade (@StellarBlade) May 15, 2025 The reason for this block is fuzzy, but fans have speculated that one thing present in the game’s PC version might be the reason for the block, and PlayStation could be behind it. It’s the Helldivers 2 situation all over again, but more confusing this time. Sony might be pulling another Helldivers 2 with the PC release of Stellar Blade Stellar Blade’s blocked PC release might be Sony’s doing again | Credit: Shift Up Everyone knows how Sony tried to force a PSN account connection with the PC release of Helldivers 2, and Stellar Blade’s case seems suspiciously similar. Stellar Blade’s PC version has already been confirmed to not require a PSN account by the devs themselves, but some players have theorised that an outfit being added to the PC version of the game can be unlocked only by linking Steam and PSN accounts, which is potentially the cause behind the block. Pair that with the fact that PSN isn’t available in any of the countries affected, and you get another good reason to blame Sony for their terrible decisions. Once again, the company is seemingly the main culprit behind the game being unavailable in over a hundred countries and what’s ironic is that Shift Up themselves are unaware about it. You’d think that when problems like this pop up, Sony would have the courtesy to at least let the developers know to make the players aware of it. Hopefully, will they listen to the community and eventually reverse this decision if this is the case. Just make the outfit available for free, and it’s all good. Otherwise, the community backlash will be even harsher than it was during Helldiver 2′s PC release, justifiably so. So, what do you think about Stellar Blade’s blocked release on PC? Do you think it’s Sony’s doing? Or do you think there are other unknown reasons for it? Share your thoughts and opinions in the comment section below. 12. Man who stabbed Rushdie sentenced to 25 years in prison Man who stabbed Rushdie sentenced to 25 years in prison A man convicted of stabbing Salman Rushdie on a New York lecture stage in 2022, leaving the prize-winning author blind in one eye, has been sentenced to serve 25 years in prison. A jury found Hadi Matar, 27, guilty of attempted ******* and assault in February. Rushdie did not return to court to the western New York courtroom for his assailant’s sentencing but submitted a victim impact statement. During the trial, the 77-year-old author was the key witness, describing how he believed he was dying when a masked attacker plunged a knife into his head and body more than a dozen times as he was being introduced at the Chautauqua Institution to speak about writer safety. Before being sentenced, Matar stood and made a statement about freedom of speech in which he called Rushdie a hypocrite. “Salman Rushdie wants to disrespect other people,” said Matar, clad in white-striped jail clothing and wearing handcuffs. “He wants to be a bully, he wants to bully other people. I don’t agree with that.” Matar received the maximum 25-year sentence for the attempted ******* of Rushdie and seven years for wounding a man who was on stage with him. The sentences must run concurrently because both victims were injured in the same event, Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt said. In requesting the maximum sentence, Schmidt told the judge that Matar “chose this. He designed this attack so that he could inflict the most amount of damage not just upon Mr Rushdie but upon this community, upon the 1400 people who were there to watch it.” Public defender Nathaniel Barone pointed out that Matar had an otherwise clean criminal record and disputed that the people in the audience should be considered victims, suggesting that a sentence of 12 years would be appropriate. “Every day since then, for the last couple of years, this case has been an international publicity sponge,” Barone said. “There was no presumption, ever, of innocence for Mr Matar from the very beginning.” Rushdie spent 17 days at a Pennsylvania hospital and more than three weeks at a New York City rehabilitation centre. The author of Midnight’s Children, The Moor’s Last Sigh and Victory City detailed his recovery in his 2024 memoir Knife. Matar next faces a federal trial on terrorism-related charges. While the first trial focused mostly on the details of the knife attack itself, the next one is expected to delve into the more complicated issue of motive. Authorities said Matar, a US citizen, was attempting to carry out a decades-old fatwa or edict calling for Rushdie’s death when he travelled from his home in Fairview, New Jersey, to target Rushdie at the summer retreat about 110km southwest of Buffalo. Matar believed the fatwa, first issued in 1989, was backed by the Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah and endorsed in a 2006 speech by the group’s secretary-general Hassan Nasrallah, according to federal prosecutors. Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued the fatwa after publication of Rushdie’s novel The Satanic Verses, which some Muslims consider blasphemous. Rushdie spent years in hiding but after Iran announced it would not enforce the decree he travelled freely over the past 25 years. Matar pleaded not guilty to a three-count indictment charging him with providing material to terrorists, attempting to provide material support to Hezbollah and engaging in terrorism transcending national boundaries. Video of the assault, captured by the venue’s cameras and played at trial, show Matar approaching the seated Rushdie from behind and reaching around him to stab at his torso with a knife. As the audience gasps and screams, Rushdie is seen raising his arms and rising from his seat, walking and stumbling for a few steps with Matar hanging on, swinging and stabbing until they both fall and are surrounded by onlookers who rush in to separate them. Jurors in Matar’s first trial delivered their verdict after less than two hours of deliberation. Residents in the towns of Abington, Rockland, Pembroke, Hanson, Whitman, and some residents in Hingham, are being asked to boil water before drinking. The order went into effect on Friday. These towns are directly served by the Abington Rockland Joint Water Works public water supply, Lindsay Wright, director of Public Health and Emergency Management and a public health nurse for the town of Abington, said in a statement late Friday morning. The only residents in Hingham affected by this order are those on Abington Street near the Rockland line that are connected to Abington-Rockland Joint Water Works, officials said. “Do not drink tap water unless it has been boiled for at least one minute,” Wright said. Residents are also being advised to use boiled or bottled water for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, and cleaning and to discard any food, ice, or beverages made with tap water before May 14. “We are taking corrective action and expect resolution within 48 to 72 hours,” Wright said. Residents “will be notified as soon as the boil water order is lifted,” Wright said. For more information, visit the Abington town website and click on the link for the boil water order information. 14. Max will be renamed HBO Max again Max will be renamed HBO Max again After around three years of being branded as Max, Warner Bros. Discovery is returning to its roots and rebranding it again… this time back to HBO Max. Alongside the rebrand, it was revealed the streamer saw immense success in the past few years — around $3 billion profitability in just two years and a whopping 22 million subscribers worldwide with the wider goal of 150 million subscribers by the end of next year. WBD believes bringing back the HBO Max branding will “amplify the uniqueness” its subscribers expect, as there’s more demand for better content rather than more content and that HBO represents “the highest quality in media.” Company CEO David Zaslav how it aims to improve its content by reintroducing the HBO branding, which is separated back in 2022 to distance the streaming service from the adult-oriented shows like Game of Thrones. “The powerful growth we have seen in our global streaming service is built around the quality of our programming. Today, we are bringing back HBO, the brand that represents the highest quality in media, to further accelerate that growth in the years ahead.” Frankly, it’s about time it made the change back, the actual rebrand itself made little to no sense, and made it weird when people went to say they were going to watch the service. 15. House Budget Committee rejects Trump agenda bill in major setback for GOP leaders House Budget Committee rejects Trump agenda bill in major setback for GOP leaders Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La., stops outside the House chamber to speak to reporters about the ongoining reconciliation budget negotiations in the U.S. Capitol on Thursday, May 15, 2025. Bill Clark | Cq-roll Call, Inc. | Getty Images WASHINGTON — The GOP-led House Budget Committee voted to reject a sweeping package for President Donald Trump’s agenda on Friday, dealing an embarrassing setback for Republican leaders. The vote in the Budget Committee was 16-21, with five conservative hard-liners joining all Democrats in voting against the multitrillion-dollar legislation. After the vote tally was read, Rep. Jodey Arrington, R-Texas, the committee chair, adjourned the hearing and told members they would not be meeting again this weekend. Negotiations with the GOP holdouts will continue in the coming days and Republicans on the panel will try to regroup as soon as Monday. Republican leaders concede the massive bill isn’t ready for prime time, and that critical changes will need to be made in the coming days to tax and Medicaid provisions to win over recalcitrant members. In an office near the hearing, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., huddled privately with some of the Freedom Caucus members who serve on the budget panel — Reps. Chip Roy of Texas, Ralph Norman of South Carolina, Andrew Clyde of Georgia, and Josh Brecheen of Oklahoma. Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris, R-Md., who is not on the panel, also joined them. In the hearing, Roy fired a warning shot at Republican leaders, saying he opposes the bill as written because it will increase the deficit. “I have to now admonish my colleagues on this side of the aisle. This bill falls profoundly short. It does not do what we say it does with respect to deficits,” Roy said. “That’s the truth. Deficits will go up in the first half of the 10-year budget window and we all know it’s true. And we shouldn’t do that. We shouldn’t say that we’re doing something we’re not doing.” “This bill has back-loaded savings and has front-loaded spending,” Roy added. “I am a no on this bill unless serious reforms are made today, tomorrow, Sunday,” he said. “Something needs to change or you’re not gonna get my support.” He was joined by Norman, who also said the bill needed changes before it could earn his vote. Across the aisle, Rep. Brendan Boyle, D-Pa., previewed the Republican divisions at the outset of the hearing, vowing that all Democrats oppose it. “You will hear over the course of this hearing a vigorous debate. And frankly there is a strong divide between Republicans and some other Republicans. There is also a divide between both sets of Republicans and this side of the dais,” said Boyle, the top Democrat on the Budget panel. “I can speak at least as to why it is every Democratic member will be voting no on the bill for billionaires.” Source link #House #Budget #Committee #rejects #Trump #agenda #bill #major #setback #GOP #leaders Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Karim Khan, the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court who has obtained arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and Vladimir V. Putin, will step down temporarily pending an investigation into ******* misconduct allegations against him, the court confirmed. Mr. Khan, who has consistently denied accusations that he ********* harassed a colleague, communicated his decision to the court on Friday, its press office said. He made headlines and spurred geopolitical backlash last year when he sought arrest warrants for Mr. Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, and other top Israeli and ****** leaders, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity. In 2021 he secured a warrant for Mr. Putin, the Russian president, for offenses in the war in Ukraine. The ******* misconduct allegations against Mr. Khan, who is British, came to light last year. A British newspaper, The Daily Mail, reported in October that a female colleague had accused him of harassment. The Guardian later reported that Mr. Khan had tried to suppress the accuser’s claims. Mr. Khan denied the allegations of both harassment and a cover-up and said on social media that he had asked for and would “cooperate fully” with an investigation. In November, the International Criminal Court, based in The Hague, announced that it had commissioned an independent probe into the accusations “to ensure a fully independent, impartial and fair process.” But over the past week, calls have ramped up for Mr. Khan to step aside as the investigation continues, thanks in part to a Wall Street Journal article about the inquiry. The article cited testimony to the U.N. officials, reporting that the woman in question has said that Mr. Khan forced her to have ******* intercourse. Mr. Khan, through his lawyers, again denied any misconduct. The allegations first surfaced internally at the I.C.C. in May 2024. The court said later that it had not conducted an internal investigation, which would require the consent of the accuser, suggesting that she had not agreed to pursue it. Days after the court shelved the matter in May, Mr. Khan made his request for Israel and ****** arrest warrants. The sequence of events has fueled claims and counterclaims suggesting political motivations. Days after Mr. Khan requested the warrants, The Guardian and two Israeli magazines reported that Israel had conducted a decadelong clandestine campaign to undermine and discredit the court. Last October, Mr. Khan, in a statement denying misconduct, cited “a wide range of attacks and threats” against the court, but did not mention Israel specifically. The recent Journal article fueled speculation, including in the Israeli media, that the allegation against Mr. Khan helped spur him to seek the arrest warrants when he did, which he has denied. Those requested warrants were for Mr. Netanyahu, Yoav Gallant, the Israeli defense minister at the time but who has since left office, and three ****** leaders for offenses during the war that was set off by the ******-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. The court issued the warrants in November against the two Israelis and one ****** leader. Two of the ****** leaders had been killed by then, and it was later confirmed that the one for whom a warrant was issued was also dead. The move against Mr. Netanyahu drew a rebuke from the United States, which has not adopted the statute that created the I.C.C. two decades ago. Israel also does not recognize the court’s jurisdiction, which means that Mr. Netanyahu and Mr. Gallant do not face arrest in their own country. Mr. Khan, 55, has been the chief prosecutor since 2021. Previously, he as an assistant secretary-general of the United Nations, where he investigated crimes committed by the Islamic State. 17. Mid-career professionals must learn to understand and use AI as GenAI tips balance Mid-career professionals must learn to understand and use AI as GenAI tips balance Forward-thinking businesses – and even nations – are upskilling mid-career professionals to help them not only survive but prosper in the era of widespread enterprise artificial intelligence (AI). As businesses and public sector organisations adopt AI at a lightning pace, white-collar professions face huge disruption, not unlike that experienced by nineteenth century blue-collar workers. According to research by OpenAI and the University of Pennsylvania, roles that will be affected include accountants, legal assistants, financial analysts, journalists, translators and public relations professionals. Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs published figures in March 2023 that spoke of 300 million jobs exposed to AI across all sectors. Generational tipping point Although it’s a concept dating back decades, the widespread take-up of generative AI (GenAI) began around 2022 with the release of ChatGPT. It was a wake-up call for governments and businesses alike, which must prepare for inevitable disruption. According to Tram Anh Nguyen, co-founder of the centre for finance, technology and entrepreneurship (CFTE), people over the age of 40 in mid-career professional roles are the most at risk of major job disruption as businesses integrate AI into their operations. CFTE is a global education platform that specialises in training in the finance sector, including teaching AI in finance. Nguyen, who is also Global Women in AI chair, spent decades working in the finance sector in business roles, said: “AI is no longer a future concept. It’s here and it’s affecting everyone at every level.” But this does not mean professionals will be replaced if they are re-trained – and this does not just mean technical training. Learning to prosper Training on AI for non-technical roles will encompass professionals learning underlying knowledge about AI, the AI tools available to them and the use cases for AI in their roles, said Nguyen. In its whitepaper titled The AI-fication of talents, CFTE said three groups of professionals will emerge. It reported that there will be: “mass displacement” of roles centred on execution which will be increasingly automated; “supercharged professionals” will emerge who use AI to expand scope and scale; while “creative disruptors” will be small group inventing new models, products and systems. Nguyen warned that the *** is behind in readying the workforce for AI. “We are not preparing people in the right way because the focus is not on adult education at scale,” she told Computer Weekly. She cited a project in Singapore which CFTE helped to design. It involves supporting mid-career transitions, particularly focusing on technology and finance sectors, while providing financial support to help people switching careers. All Singaporeans aged 40 and above received funds to refresh their skills, with a large proportion taking up IT-related courses in areas including artificial intelligence. Around 555,000 people participated in programmes supported by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) in 2024 and 520,000 in 2023, according to Singapore newspaper The Straits Times. These are significant numbers for Singapore, which has a population of around six million, but the same challenge is faced globally. Cross-sector call to action One sector being heavily affected is financial services, which leads the way in AI innovation and investment. For example, Bloomberg Intelligence recently put the number of jobs set to be replaced by AI in the US finance sector – Wall Street specifically – at hundreds of thousands. CIOs questioned by the organisation expected 3% of their workforce to be cut on average. Around a quarter of respondents expect the workforce to be cut by between 5% and 10% as AI takes over roles, with the back and middle offices to be most affected. According to research by banking industry benchmarking firm Evident, AI-related roles could be the only “safe jobs” in the banking sector as financial organisations “relentlessly” press on with AI-led transformation. It’s banking industry report found that recruitment of AI development professionals grew by 6% in the last year, hiring of data engineers increased by 14%, and the number of AI and software implementation experts hired increased by 42%. But while the finance sector finds itself on the front-line of the AI revolution, the technology’s rapid spread goes way beyond. Bloomberg’s head of AI, Amanda Stent, recently told Computer Weekly in an interview that there has been “no revolution in history that has not led to job transformation”. “Some types of job change, some types of job go away,” they added. “But there’s also no revolution in history that hasn’t led to more jobs created overall, I think that is true with AI, which will augment a lot of people.” Stent said all workers, regardless of their roles, will have to learn to use AI: “We can teach people how to be effective users of AI without needing to know all that maths.” The legal sector is an example of a traditional industry adapting to AI. The *** regulator of solicitors, the Solicitors Regulation Authority, recently authorised the first law firm to provide legal services purely through AI. Mark Lewis, a lawyer at Stephenson Hardwood, specialised in technology, said most, “if not virtually all, serious law firms” are deploying AI and GenAI operationally. “Typical use cases include document review, analysis and summarisation, legal research, case research and predicting the outcomes of cases, reviewing and reporting on the application of regulations around the world, and, of course, in law firm back-office operations – for example, in client due diligence and acceptance.” But he added that AI is not “yet” causing “major disruption” in the legal sector: “As with talk of AI disrupting many sectors, including doing away with the work now done by paralegals, junior lawyers, and even senior lawyers, this hasn’t really happened yet in the legal markets here – or, I think, anywhere. “There is a good deal of the usual tech hype about it. No doubt AI will become integral to legal process and lawyering at all levels, but, as in many other sectors, even that is going to take time and the maturing of legal use cases.” He said firms are, however, preparing for the impact of AI: “We, like many firms, have made available to all our lawyers GenAI tools developed specifically for us, to be used within certain parameters and in accordance with our AI/GenAI policies. “We want our lawyers to use these GenAI tools, to become accustomed to the way it processes work, to understand its strengths and limitations, and to become expert in creating and refining prompts. “For me, there is an even more important – existential – point: the single biggest challenge is how we as a society learn to understand, live and work with AI. It should start as early as possible and continue through our lives.” In the IT sector, AI is a huge business opportunity, but the technology is also transforming how suppliers operate. Workers in the IT sector will also have to learn to work with AI. Amrinder Singh, head of EMEA and APAC operations at Indian IT services firm Hexaware, told Computer Weekly that all the company’s staff, around 30,000, will be trained how to harness AI. He put it in startling terms the risks to workers that are not trained up. “We said that there is no future for single-skilled people,” he said. “Unless you are multi-skilled with domain understanding, as well as understanding how to use AI and technology, you will not survive.” Source link #Midcareer #professionals #learn #understand #GenAI #tips #balance Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  18. Conservatives Imperil G.O.P. Megabill That Would Fulfill Trump’s Agenda Conservatives Imperil G.O.P. Megabill That Would Fulfill Trump’s Agenda Conservatives on the House Budget Committee on Friday blocked their party’s megabill from reaching the floor, citing concerns that the legislation to fulfill President Trump’s domestic agenda would add too much to the deficit. It was a remarkable revolt that threatened to upend the party’s drive to push the legislation through the House before a Memorial Day recess, and sent Republican leaders scrambling to try to put down the uprising. Five Republicans — Representatives Chip Roy of Texas, Ralph Norman of South Carolina, Josh Brecheen of Oklahoma, Andrew Clyde of Georgia, and Lloyd Smucker of Pennsylvania — joined Democrats in voting against the legislation. The vote was 16 to 21. “This bill falls profoundly short; it does not do what we say it does with respect to deficits,” Mr. Roy said. “Deficits will go up in the first half of the 10 year budget window, and we all know it’s true, and we shouldn’t do that. We shouldn’t say that we’re doing something we’re not doing.” The bill would make Mr. Trump’s 2017 tax cuts permanent and eliminate taxes on tips and overtime pay through 2028, fulfilling a campaign pledge. Cuts to Medicaid, food stamps and subsidies for clean energy would partly offset the roughly $3.8 trillion cost of those tax measures over 10 years, as well as increased spending on the military and immigration enforcement. But the conservatives are demanding changes to the bill, arguing that their leaders did not go far enough to cut federal spending. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a nonpartisan group that calls for lower deficits, estimated that the bill would add roughly $3.3 trillion to the deficit over the next decade. Chief among their frustrations are that a measure imposing work requirements on childless Medicaid recipients without disabilities would not kick in until 2029. “We’re telling a healthy body, a healthy American, that you’ve got four years to get a job,” Mr. Norman said. They are also unhappy that the legislation does not immediately eliminate a slew of clean energy tax credits that were created by President Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s Inflation Reduction Act. Both of those measures were written in an effort to split the difference between the conservatives who have been clamoring for deep cuts to both Medicaid and the clean energy tax credits, and the more centrist Republicans who say their constituents depend on both programs. Politically vulnerable Republicans in particular have warned that voting for a measure that would ax widely used federal programs would be politically toxic. 20. Bella Culley requests to see her family while held in Georgia Bella Culley requests to see her family while held in Georgia Tom Burgess BBC News, North East and Cumbria Rayhan Demytrie Caucasus correspondent Watch: Bella Culley appears in Georgia court A British teenager has written a letter to Georgian authorities asking for the chance to see her family while she is held in prison in Georgia on suspicion of drug offences. Bella Culley, 18, from Billingham on Teesside, who is being held in prison number 5 in Rustavi, faces a five-day wait to find out whether she can see her father. She has been told she will be detained for 55 days before trial while the prosecution investigates where the 12kg (26lbs) of ********** and 2kg (4.4lbs) of hashish found in a travel bag had come from, and whether she was planning on handing it over to someone else. Her lawyer, Ia Todua, said that she has the “right to demand this short-term visit from her family”. Ms Todua, who has been appointed by the state to represent the British teenager, said Ms Culley should be allowed short visits, and that the authorities legally have to respond to her request within five days. “She has the right to demand this short-term visit from her family, through the decision of the prosecution,” said Ms Todua. “She’s not cut off from outside contact. She is allowed small meetings.” The BBC was told that the meeting could be up to an hour long, that a lawyer does not have to accompany the family, and that there will be no glass partition between the two parties. At the end of her pre-trial hearing on Tuesday, Miss Culley told the court she was pregnant. Bella Culley Bella Culley’s family is being supported by the Foreign Office The Foreign Office has confirmed that it is “supporting the family of a British woman who is detained in Georgia”. Georgian Police said officers had seized ********** and the ********* drug hashish in a travel bag at Tbilisi International Airport. The BBC understands that Ms Culley arrived in Tbilisi on a flight from Sharjah, in the United Arab Emirates, on 10 May . The BBC has been told that the British Embassy has advised the teenager’s family not to speak to the press. Rayhan Demytrie Bella Culley has been sent to prison number 5, in the city of Rustavi, while she awaits trial Miss Culley was charged by Georgian police with illegally buying, possessing and importing large quantities of narcotics. A spokesperson said the arrest was the result of a joint operation between multiple departments and, if she is found guilty, Miss Culley could face up to 20 years in jail or life imprisonment. Cleveland Police has confirmed an 18-year-old woman from Billingham has been arrested in Georgia “on suspicion of drugs offences” and remains in custody. 21. The Epic Games Store Has Two More Freebies This Week The Epic Games Store Has Two More Freebies This Week neutralgamer199219h ago I’ve seen a lot of people projecting that the Switch 2 will sell over 100 million units by 2029. While I understand the optimism—especially considering the original Switch’s success—I think those numbers might be overlooking the current state of the market and how much it’s shifted. First off, we need to stop using early sellouts or pre-order hype as a reliable indicator of long-term success. Every major console that’s launched in the last 25 years has sold out during its pre-order window. Even consoles that were ultimately considered commercial disappointments—like the Wii U—sold out at launch. The PS3, which launched at a hefty $600 back in 2007, still had people lining up. That early rush is almost always driven by the core gaming audience, not the mass market. The real test comes after that honeymoon phase, when sales depend on casual gamers and broader adoption. And that’s where things get trickier now. The gaming landscape has changed dramatically. Mobile gaming has completely taken over in terms of both revenue and number of players. It’s ******* than console and PC gaming combined, and it’s still growing. That makes sense when you think about it: everyone already has a phone, and many have tablets too. Pair that with a Bluetooth controller and you’ve got a portable, high-quality gaming experience with almost no extra cost. Consoles and gaming PCs, on the other hand, require a substantial investment just to get started. When money is tighter for a lot of households and the average consumer is more price-conscious, it becomes harder to justify spending $400–600+ on a single-use gaming device—especially when they already own something that plays games well enough. I’m not saying the Switch 2 won’t be successful. Nintendo has a strong brand and a loyal fanbase. But I do think people are underestimating how much harder it is today to move that kind of hardware volume. The market’s more competitive, more fragmented, and more mobile than ever before Source link #Epic #Games #Store #Freebies #Week Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  22. Ram confirms another delay to electric, range-extender utes Ram confirms another delay to electric, range-extender utes The all-electric Ram 1500 REV ute, and the closely related range-extender Ram 1500 Ramcharger, are delayed, again. Responding to a report by Crain’s Detroit Business, a spokesperson for the French-Italian-American automaker confirmed the company is “extending the quality validation *******” to iron out some quality issues on the EREV (extended-range electric vehicle) 1500 Ramcharger. Although the spokesperson didn’t elaborate on what these issues are, this latest setback means the Ramcharger won’t be launched until the first quarter of 2026, at the earliest. Revealed and detailed in November 2023, the Ramcharger was initially set to launch at the end of 2024. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. Camera Icon2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger Credit: CarExpert As for the all-electric 1500 REV, that’s being delayed due to market “slowing consumer demand” for full-size electric pickup trucks in the States. Despite rising EV sales in the US, the Rivian R1T, Tesla Cybertruck, Ford F-150 Lightning, and the electric versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra aren’t meeting their initially imagined sales targets. For example, in 2024 Ford sold around 33,000 Lightnings out of 460,915 F-150s in total. The Blue Oval initially planned to shift around 150,000 Lightnings per year. Unveiled in early 2023, the Ram 1500 REV was originally set to enter the market in late 2024. At the end of last year, Ram pushed the launch date back to 2026, and now it has confirmed the REV won’t become available until the third quarter of 2027. The long-range variant of the 1500 REV with a 229kWh battery and projected range of 804km (500 miles) has been cancelled, meaning only the standard-range variant will be offered. Camera Icon2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger Credit: CarExpert At its 2023 unveiling, the standard-range 1500 REV was equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup making a total of 488kW and 841Nm. Fed by a 168kWh battery, the electric Ram is said to have a 563km (350 mile) range. Given the car’s long gestation time, these details may well change by the time REV finally launches. The 1500 Ramcharger aims to offer the best of both worlds with its extended-range EV drivetrain. It has a pair of electric motors driving all four wheels, making a total of 487kW and 834Nm, and fed by a 92kWh battery pack. There’s also a 3.6-litre V6 on board, but it can’t drive the wheels. Instead its only task is to charge up the battery pack when it starts running low. 25. Nintendo confirms previously expected Switch 2 feature won’t be available at launch Nintendo confirms previously expected Switch 2 feature won’t be available at launch Despite initially announcing the feature, Nintendo has confirmed that Switch 2 will not support variable refresh rate (VRR) when played in docked television mode. VRR, in Nintendo’s words, helps games move seamlessly “by preventing frame skips and flickering”. Following Switch 2’s full reveal in April, Nintendo’s official websites had advertised VRR support for the console in both handheld and docked mode. However, some weeks later, it was noticed that references to VRR had been quietly removed in relation to docked play. Now, over a month later, Nintendo has finally clarified that Switch 2 will support VRR in handheld mode only – but not on TV. A spokesperson told Nintendo Life: “Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologise for the error.” Switch won’t have VRR TV support at launch. When asked if VRR support for docked mode could be added later via a firmware update, Nintendo said: “We have nothing to announce on this topic.” Switch 2 is due to launch on June 5. On Friday, Nintendo detailed the free Switch 2 updates coming to 12 of its existing Switch games at launch, including Super Mario Odyssey, Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, and The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. Some games will only be getting the addition of GameShare support, a new feature which means that players with multiple Switch consoles (be that Switch or Switch 2) will be able to play multiplayer with only one copy of the game.
