  4. How an *********** bar was saved by Wrexham’s footballing rise How an *********** bar was saved by Wrexham’s footballing rise Dieter Steinbusch York Lane has been the unofficial spot for Wrexham fans in Sydney for the past three years. Wrexham’s fairy tale success story under their Hollywood owners has seen the football club gain fans across the Atlantic. And that success has also helped a struggling *********** bar change its fortunes after being inspired by the story. York Lane, a bar in Sydney’s Central Business District (CBD), adopted a Wrexham AFC theme three years ago, and even serves Wrexham Lager. It has now become an unofficial home of the club’s Aussie supporters ahead of the clubs summer tour to the country this year. “It’s down to my friend Mike,” said Dieter Steinbusch who owns the bar. He recommended the hit television series, Welcome To Wrexham, and the storyline “mirrors what I’ve tried to do with my bar”, he said. Mike Roberts has lived in Australia for 57 years, after moving from Wrexham when he was 10-years-old as a “10 Pound Pom”, a term used to describe British citizens who migrated to Australia and New Zealand after the Second World War. “Three years ago if I mentioned Wrexham, people would just look at you and they wouldn’t have a clue,” said Mike. “Now, I’m not joking one in three people not only know of the team, they actually follow the team, and it’s just stunning.” Dieter Steinbusch Mike (left) and Dieter watch their beloved Wrexham with other fans in the bar The bar boasts a mural of Wrexham’s Hollywood owners Rob McElheney, Ryan Reynolds and club memorabilia . When Wrexham secured their third successive promotion to the Championship Dieter offered his customers free Wrexham Lager. “My punters like it,” said Dieter, “it’s like Aussie beer, but, I think it’s better and it goes down very well.” He said Wrexham fans in Sydney always visit the bar before they return home. “When they come to visit, not that I’ve ever met them in my life, it’s just like a family. It’s brilliant,” he said. Dieter Steinbusch Dieter says he was inspired after watching Wrexham in the series “Welcome to Wrexham” Wrexham will play three pre-season fixtures against A-League opposition during a summer tour of Australia and New Zealand. Phil Parkinson’s side will take on Melbourne Victory at Marvel Stadium on 11 July before facing Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium four days later. The north Wales side will then play Wellington Phoenix at the Sky Stadium on 19 July. “We’re going to Melbourne and we’re going to go to Sydney,” said Mike, adding: “but all of my friends, every single one of them, are going as well because they just love this thing.” Mike believes there is no other football team in the world that has “done what Wrexham’s done”. “They’ve galvanised people somehow, it’s amazing!” Dieter said the last time he felt this excited about a sporting event was watching Cathy Freeman win a gold medal for Australia in 2000 Sydney Olympics. “I’ll say this now is one of the biggest things besides that,” he added. Dieter Steinbusch Dieter and The Turf’s landlord Wayne Jones have shared customers over the years Dieter has built a friendship with Wayne Jones, the landlord of The Turf, which sits just outside Wrexham’s stadium. Their customers have taken some items, such as a the York Lane t-shirt, from one landlord to another as the bond has grown. “It’s great to be so far away yet so so close,” said Dieter. In previous series of Welcome to Wrexham, Rob and Ryan have popped in to the Turf for a few pints. With the fourth season on the horizon, Dieter and Mike are hoping they might make an appearance at York Lane in the near future. “It’s hard to find because it’s down a little unique lane in Sydney,” said Mike. “It’s not the sort of place you’d pass if you didn’t know where it was.” Dieter said Rob and Ryan would be “very, very welcome” adding that the Wrexham fans will always have a special place in his heart. “Just come and find us. There will always be a welcome for you here.” Source link #*********** #bar #saved #Wrexhams #footballing #rise Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  5. 16 Years Ago, My Least Favorite Batman Arkham Game Humiliated Harley Quinn 16 Years Ago, My Least Favorite Batman Arkham Game Humiliated Harley Quinn The Batman: Arkham games have captivated the world with their most accurate portrayal of the Caped Crusader, where players can fly around in their Batsuit and beat up criminals. I mean, who does not want to bring justice to the rotten city of Gotham, right? While the entire franchise has done a great job at giving a sense of realism to not just Batman but other characters in the games as well, I am truly disappointed at this one installment that just ruined one of the most compelling characters in the entire Batman universe. Of course, I am talking about how Batman: Arkham Asylum reduced Harley Quinn into this crazy, obsessed lover who is totally “not” manipulated by The Joker. Let’s delve deeper into this. Arkham Asylum rushed the origins of Harley Quinn Batman: Arkham Asylum is one of the greatest video games of all time. The game made by Rocksteady was released back in August of 2009 and acted as a blueprint for the best Batman franchise in history. The game takes place in the Arkham Asylum, and although in the comics, the place is depicted as a small asylum building, in the game, it is a full-fledged island with explorable areas like the botanical garden or the Arkham mansion. Throughout the entire map, Batman can find interview tapes (35 in total), which feature conversations between the doctors of Arkham and their patients, including villains like The Joker, Killer Croc, and Harley Quinn. These tapes sort of give an insight into these characters, with Harley having four interview tapes, where throughout her interviews with The Joker, she transitions from Dr. Harleen Quinzel into Harley Quinn. In the first tape, which is dated March 3rd in the game, Harleen was interviewing The Joker for the first time, and even then, it was sort of hinted that Harleen had a sort of infatuation towards The Joker when he stated how he’ll make Harleen’s first interview memorable, and she agreed saying that he already has. Despite having only four lines from Harleen, it is quite clear that there was some flirtatious chemistry between her and The Joker. That’s just bonkers from The Joker’s side, considering he charmed Harleen’s socks off without ever interacting with her. By the second tape, which is dated March 4th, Joker had already broken out of his cell to bring flowers for his heartthrob. This is how Arkham Asylum sort of ruined Harley because by the third tape, The Joker is already monologing about how Batman is the problem, and by the fourth tape, dated April 1st, The Joker is out of his cell, and Harleen has turned into Harley Quinn. This feels way too rushed, even by video game standards, and you cannot tell me that The Joker switched a psychiatrist’s psyche in just a month. Rocksteady could have just made a few more tapes Harley Quinn’s origin was rushed by Rocksteady Studios | Image Credits: Warner Bros. I understand that it is literally not possible to invest that much depth into just the origins of Harley’s and The Joker’s relationship, and it inevitably has to be short. But we still should’ve gotten a bit more than just four tapes, considering the game was written by veteran Batman writer, Paul Dini, who is also the co-creator of Harley Quinn. Maybe not a top-tier flashback, but Rocksteady could have at least introduced some more tapes to properly establish the dynamic between Harley and The Joker. The developers could have literally taken a page out of the one-shot comic, Mad Love, by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, where they go into detail about how The Joker opens up to Harleen about his past trauma. In the same comic book, it is also established that Harleen did not just throw everything away and join The Joker on his venture just because he was being flirtatious. Harley did it because she sympathized with The Joker when he told her about his abusive father and how Batman hurt him. Harleen later concluded that The Joker is just a misunderstood figure who is constantly being victimized by Batman. Harley Quinn did not deserve the treatment she got in Arkham Asylum Harley’s portrayal was unfair and wasted | Image Credits: Warner Bros. While Batman: Arkham Asylum has set the standard for superhero games and delivered on one of the best portrayals of the Dark Knight’s nemesis, The Joker, its treatment of Harley Quinn does not feel unjust, but also leaves the fans wanting more. In a game that nailed so many aspects of the Batman universe, it is honestly disappointing to see Harley have a rushed origin and just a sidekick role. Her transformation that happened in a span of less than one month and in just four audio tapes, with barely any time to show the emotional and psychological weight of that shift, makes it kind of hard to believe that the game was written by Paul Dini. Arkham Asylum did not just ruin the backstory of a beloved character, but also went on to shape how Harley would be seen in other games, movies, and comic books, where the flirty, impulsive, and crazy loyal persona became a template for her character. This left out so much of what made Harley powerful. In Mad Love‘s version of Harley, we felt the tragedy behind her fall, how she got manipulated by The Joker and truly believed that she was just trying to save someone she thought was broken, and depth is missing in Arkham Asylum. What stings even more is how much care and attention was given to The Joker’s development in the entire franchise. A villain who steals every scene and leaves and lasting mark. Harley, in contrast, does not get the same treatment, and her backstory feels like an afterthought and not cared for. Harley Quinn is one of the most compelling characters in the Batman universe, and she did not just get unfairly treated; her potential in the franchise had gone to waste. Instead of getting a story of her own, she got left behind in the shadow of someone else’s spotlight. 6. ‘In the blood’: Walters confirms interest in Perth job ‘In the blood’: Walters confirms interest in Perth job Kevin Walters has confirmed his interest in coaching the Perth Bears and that he has had an informal discussion about the posting. The Bears are closing in on a coach to helm the cub in 2027 and the former Brisbane mentor is in the mix along with former Parramatta coach Brad Arthur, Warrington mentor Sam Burgess and Australia coach Mal Meninga. Walters took the Broncos to the 2023 grand final after resurrecting the club’s fortunes. He was controversially sacked at the end of 2024 after they missed the finals but was instrumental in launching the careers of most of the current Brisbane roster. The six-time premiership winner has been working for Fox League this year and AAP spoke to him about the Perth job at halftime of the Dolphins-Warriors clash at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday. “I have always said that coaching is my passion. I love coaching,” Walters told AAP. “It was just a chat. I’m serious about it. I haven’t been offered the job. It was just informal discussions about whether I would be interested. “I am (a career coach). It is in the blood. It has always been in the blood.” Arthur was set to be the Perth coach if the former consortium chaired by Peter Cumins had won their bid. Meninga and Burgess have both recently confirmed their intention to be considered for the prestigious Bears job. 7. How Russia uses Ukrainians to sabotage the West How Russia uses Ukrainians to sabotage the West All things considered, the reward that Russia allegedly offered Daniil Bardadim to betray his country was pretty meagre: $11,000 (£8,000) in cash and a second-hand BMW. The Ukrainian, 17, was presented with the promise of quick cash and a luxury car by his Russian handlers, who wanted him to burn down a branch of Ikea in Lithuania. Bardadim, who was living in Poland as a refugee, apparently felt the offer was too good to pass up. Lithuanian prosecutors allege that he crossed into their country and set the store ablaze, in May 2024. The Kremlin is no stranger to recruiting criminals and opportunists to carry out its dirty work, offering rewards of cash or luxury goods via encrypted messenger apps. But the case of Bardadim – and the arrests this week of three Ukrainians in Germany and Switzerland on charges of plotting to firebomb Europe’s postal network – underline how Moscow revels in trying to recruit people from its sworn foe as secret agents. Bardadim was arrested after the blaze in Vilnius by Lithuanian authorities. They have since charged him with terrorism offences, while Poland has arrested an alleged accomplice of his, also Ukrainian. Daniil Bardadim has been charged with terrorism offences after he allegedly tried to burn down an Ikea in Lithuania As with many other cases of Russian sabotage across Europe, those who commit such attacks face long jail sentences – but the masterminds are hundreds of miles away in Moscow. European security sources say the use of these so-called “disposable” agents is on the rise, as Russia wages a hybrid-war campaign on Europe targeting military sites, defence industry factories and undersea cables. In Germany, the process has been dubbed “the gig economy of sabotage”, due to the Russian handlers’ use of messenger apps on mobile phones. But it is the use of Ukrainians, Russia’s foes, which is particularly shocking, with military experts saying that is very much part of the Kremlin’s strategy. “These are absolutely classic Russian espionage tactics,” Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a security analyst and former British Army tank commander, said. “An agent like this can go under the radar [due to their nationality], but the impact of what they do is also doubled: it creates a huge reaction from the Western public and the press, who will be shocked that it was a Ukrainian. And it allows the Russian press to claim that Ukrainians don’t really support the West and are trying to attack them.” The Kremlin does not just offer cash rewards, he added, and sometimes resorts to blackmail, such as threatening family members. “There’s really nothing off limits for the Russians if they want to achieve something – whether it’s cash, a flashy car, sex or drugs,” he said. In Ukraine itself, pro-Russian saboteurs have been a major concern since Russia’s initial invasion of 2014 and annexation of Crimea. Teenagers are said to be a particularly easy target for Russian spymasters to groom over social media. SBU warns parents of Russian tactics Ukraine’s SBU intelligence service has sent out warning letters to parents, underlining the risk that Russian agents could be trying to reach out to their children via mobile phones. “Dear parents, let’s imagine a very real situation. Your child is sitting on his phone – as usual. And suddenly a stranger writes to him: “Hello, do you want to earn five thousand [Ukrainian] hryvnias?” states one such letter seen by The Telegraph. It goes on to explain how Russian-hired teenagers in Ukraine will at first be asked to carry out a minor task, such as taking a photograph of a building or drawing graffiti. Then, the tasks slowly and inexorably become more serious, culminating in a plot to sabotage railway lines or switchboards. By that point, the letter warns, “unfortunately, not all [children] have time to understand that they have become victims”. Ukrainian security forces have warned parents that Russian agents could be trying to reach out to their children via mobile phones Ukrainian authorities say they have thwarted a string of attacks of this nature, such as a plot in April which relied on teenagers to plant explosives at Ukrainian military sites. In December, Russian agents tried to hire a teenager to carry out an unwitting suicide bombing against a Ukrainian military facility in Kyiv Oblast. The bomb was built by two women from Vinnytsia Oblast, and the teenager who was asked to transport it had no idea it would self-detonate. According to Defence Blog, Ukrainian security forces thwarted the operation before the bomb was detonated. In another case, in March this year, two teenagers aged 15 and 17 were hired by Russian spies to build an improvised explosive device. As they were delivering the device, their Russian handler remotely detonated it. The blast killed the 17-year-old instantly and hospitalised the 15-year-old with severe injuries. In March two Ukrainian teenagers were hired by Moscow to build a bomb which a Russian handler remotely detonated While the promise of fast cash might be attractive to some youngsters, there is a sting in the tale of Bardadim, the teenager accused of being behind the Ikea fire in Lithuania. According to the New York Times, which first reported the full details of the plot, Russia did follow through with payment of the BMW, handed over prior to the attack. But the other half of Bardadim’s payment – the $11,000 US dollars – never materialised. Source link #Russia #Ukrainians #sabotage #West Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  9. US PGA Championship 2025: Tyrrell Hatton & Shane Lowry swear in outbursts at Quail Hollow US PGA Championship 2025: Tyrrell Hatton & Shane Lowry swear in outbursts at Quail Hollow On Thursday, some players at Quail Hollow – including world number one Scottie Scheffler – complained about mud ******, where golf ****** get covered in mud and dirt during bad weather. Preferred lies – a rule sometimes used during periods of adverse weather that permits players to lift, clean and place their ball within a specified distance of its original position on closely-mown areas – were not sanctioned for use by the PGA of America. Lowry’s tee shot on the eighth hole pitched on the fairway and bounced sideways into a divot left by another player, which meant he was not allowed the relief for an embedded ball that would have applied had it been in his own pitch mark. “You hit a lovely tee shot, you’re not expecting that,” said world number 10 Lowry. “I was obviously very annoyed with that because I felt like I had quite a bit of momentum going in the round, and standing there with 40 or 50 yards to the pin off the fairway it’s an easy pitch shot for me – and I walk away making bogey.” Lowry was particularly unhappy with the unsolicited input of an on-course reporter, adding: “The ESPN guy was a bit too involved when he wasn’t asked to be and that’s what annoyed me a lot. “He came straight over and said: ‘That’s not your pitch mark.’ That’s not for you to talk about, it’s for me to call a rules official and decide what happens. “I wasn’t arguing that it was my pitch mark, I was trying to be 100% sure because imagine if I come in [after the round] and all of a sudden somebody told me that was my pitch mark. “They told Brooks [Koepka] his ball was OK yesterday and it was on the driving range, so you need to be careful about what you’re doing because there’s so much at stake.” Source link #PGA #Championship #Tyrrell #Hatton #Shane #Lowry #swear #outbursts #Quail #Hollow Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  11. Saturn’s Moon Titan Is Surprisingly Earth-Like, the Only Other Place with Weather Like Ours Saturn’s Moon Titan Is Surprisingly Earth-Like, the Only Other Place with Weather Like Ours We tend to think of the weather as mundane, the sort of boring things you talk about when you have nothing else to say, but in the scope of the solar system, it’s one of the most interesting things going on. There are eight known planets, five known dwarf planets, and hundreds of known moons in our solar system, but only two of them have weather: Earth and Titan. Saturn’s moon Titan is almost featureless when seen in visible light, thanks to a thick blanket of atmospheric fog. But when astronomers look at it in infrared light, they suddenly see lakes and rivers, dunes and valleys, and a complex liquid cycle. Recently, astronomers peered at Titan using the JWST and Keck observatories, revealing new insight into Titan’s bizarrely Earth-like weather. For More on Saturn’s Moon Titan Alien Life on Saturn’s Moon Titan Looking Less Likely, At Least Below the SurfaceTitan Has Geological Features Eerily Similar to Those on EarthNASA is Sending a Flying Dragonfly Rotorcraft to Explore Saturn’s Moon Titan The alien weather systems at work on Saturn’s moon Titan Methane clouds (denoted by the white arrows) appearing at different altitudes in Titan’s northern hemisphere. While the crew of The Ark (streaming now on Peacock) made their way across light-years of space to visit Proxima centauri b, they might have had a better shot setting up closer to home. Titan isn’t exactly habitable by human standards (it’s way too cold and we couldn’t breathe the air) but it’s remarkably similar in many ways. It has an atmosphere made of mostly nitrogen, just like on Earth, with an atmospheric pressure about 1.5 times that of Earth. Inside that atmosphere you’ll find running rivers, lakes, seas, and weather with clouds and rain. The surface temperatures on Titan are so cold (about -290 Fahrenheit) that water exists as solid stone and, possibly, liquid water oceans deep underground. Instead of water, Titan’s surface liquid cycle centers on methane. It evaporates from methane lakes and seas, creates methane clouds in the atmosphere, and rains back down again. “Titan is the only other place in our solar system that has weather like Earth, in the sense that it has clouds and rainfall onto a surface,” explained astronomer Conor Nixon of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, in a statement. Astronomers watched Titan’s weather in action with Keck and JWST telescopes This four-panel infographic demonstrates a key chemical process believed to occur in the atmosphere of Saturn’s moon Titan. Astronomers used the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and Keck observatories during two observation windows, one in November 2022 and another in July 2023, to investigate the weather cycle on Titan. In those observations, they identified two bright areas of methane cloud cover in the mid and high northern latitudes. It’s the first time astronomers have seen evidence of convection in the northern parts of Titan. That’s where most of the moon’s methane lakes and seas are, covering an area roughly equivalent to the North American Great Lakes. That’s where Titan’s weather cycle starts, as methane evaporates from the rivers and lakes on the surface, creating clouds. Keck and JWST investigated the layers of Titan’s atmosphere to estimate the altitude of clouds and track their movement over time. In observations taken days apart, astronomers watched clouds rise to higher altitudes, where methane gets broken down by sunlight or energetic electrons from Saturn’s magnetosphere. As methane breaks down, it creates methyl radicals like CH3 which combine to create other molecules like ethane. Finally, they condense and fall from the alien sky as rain, returning to the surface and completing the cycle. Titan may not be the most comfortable place in the universe, but it’s about as close to home as any place we’ve found. Visit alien worlds on The Ark, streaming now on Peacock. 14. Oak Hill mediation is failing. Here’s what could happen next Oak Hill mediation is failing. Here’s what could happen next Mediation in the Oak Hill Country Club lawsuit is going so well that the parties in the litigation can’t even agree on what’s happening in mediation. Should mediation fail, the legal skirmish engulfing the country club could cost its members hundreds of thousands of dollars or more, especially if it goes to trial. Court records show that a recent mediated attempt at settlement apparently failed. A letter from an attorney for the Oak Hill members suing the club and its board says that lawyers for the opposition “abruptly ended mediation and asked to go to trial.” “Mediation having hardly commenced, Petitioners were optimistic that the parties’ highly capable mediator would successfully resolve the case quickly, without further expense and public spectacle,” wrote Kelly Foss, the lawyer for the petitioners (those suing Oak Hill), in the May 13 letter to state Supreme Court Justice Daniel Doyle. “Petitioners sincerely hope that a majority of the Board reconsiders and decides to reopen mediation,” she wrote. Rory McIlroy hits from the fairway rough on the 4th hole during the final round at the PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club Sunday, May 21, 2023. In a court filing Thursday, May 15, Jerauld Brydges, the attorney for the club, said that Foss’ letter misrepresented what happened at the recent mediation session and also breached confidentiality about the sessions. The lawyers for Oak Hill ― the “respondents” in legal parlance ― did not abruptly end the mediation but instead were ready to follow the court orders and plan possible hearing dates, Brydges wrote. “Unfortunately, correcting the public record would require respondents to delve into the particulars of the mediation and violate their confidentiality obligations, something that they ― unlike petitioner ― are unwilling to do,” he wrote. Foss said in an email to the Democrat and Chronicle that the topics in her letter were not a violation of confidentiality agreements with mediation. “Although Petitioners would much prefer to resolve the case out of court, we will take the case to trial if Respondents insist,” she wrote. Brydges declined to comment beyond the court filings. Controversy consuming life at Oak Hill Country Club Internal Oak Hill correspondence, shared with the Democrat and Chronicle by members who are not party to the litigation, shows that the legal entanglement has caused a growing schism among the members. And some are chafing at the possibility of shouldering what are swelling legal fees. There appears to be no public evidence that the imbroglio has tainted the club’s image in the larger golf world circles, but some members do worry that a continued legal battle could do just that. Eugene Baldino contends in the lawsuit that he was illegally ousted from the board last year after questioning the use of Oak Hill funds. Among his issues was a question of whether a holiday fund built on member contributions was filtered more to mid-level employees and others than the lower-wage workers the fund was intended to help. An internal investigation determined that Baldino had harassed and bullied an Oak Hill worker, Hanna Halpin, after he was upset with an inability to seat other members for dinner at the club. That was the second incident, the investigation determined, in which Baldino had been abusive with a club worker. However, Halpin is also suing the club, alleging that the internal investigation was likely designed to oust Baldino and that her interaction with him was misportrayed. He was angry, she alleges, but not abusive nor did he harass her. Baldino is joined by other members in his lawsuit, which was filed in October. Justice Doyle has attempted to bring the parties together for a mediated settlement, records show. In her letter, Foss suggests several court dates in September for a trial, dates originally proposed by Doyle. There would be depositions beforehand. An insurer for Oak Hill has declined to cover the club’s expenses for the lawsuit from Baldino, saying that its policy excludes internecine litigation between board members. — Gary Craig is a veteran courts and criminal justice reporter for the Democrat and Chronicle. Interest has grown in recent years in launching carrier vehicles fuelled by methane, which is deemed less polluting, safer and cheaper than more commonly used hydrocarbon fuels and a suitable propellant in a reusable rocket. LandSpace has increased the rocket’s payload, reflecting increasing demand in China’s expanding commercial space industry amid growing competition to form a constellation of satellites as an alternative to Musk’s Starlink. Its first successful methane-powered launch did not carry any real satellites, but the second launch in December 2023 successfully sent into orbit three satellites. Saturday’s launch put six satellites into orbit. Reusable rockets, pioneered by SpaceX, have demonstrated that they can lower costs for launch vehicles and space transportation. LandSpace founder and CEO Zhang Changwu has said the company had started developing reusable rockets and expected to conduct a test launch in the second half of 2025. The latest model in its Zhuque-2 series includes technical improvements that will help the company’s goal of launching a reusable rocket. Saturday’s launch marked the first time LandSpace has deployed a propulsion method that involves chilling both liquid oxygen and methane below their boiling points, boosting thrust. ******** commercial space firms have rushed into the sector since 2014, when the government allowed private investment in the industry. LandSpace was one of the earliest and best-funded entrants. 17. Rubio speaks to Israel’s Netanyahu, says US troubled by Gaza humanitarian situation Rubio speaks to Israel’s Netanyahu, says US troubled by Gaza humanitarian situation By Humeyra Pamuk ANTALYA, Turkey (Reuters) – U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said after he spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday that Washington is troubled by the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Rubio, speaking to reporters in Antalya, Turkey, said the U.S. was “not immune or in any way insensitive to the suffering of people in Gaza,” where no humanitarian assistance has been delivered since March 2. He repeated the Trump administration’s stance that ****** militants, who launched the October 2023 attacks that began the conflict, are to blame for the situation in Gaza. “We think that the elimination of ****** is what achieves peace. We’re troubled by the humanitarian situation,” Rubio said. It was the first time Rubio has addressed the situation in Gaza since the U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation announced it will start work in Gaza by the end of May under a heavily-criticized distribution plan. He said he had heard criticism of the plan and that the U.S. was open to an alternative plan. “It allows people to get aid without ****** stealing it,” Rubio said. “We’ll continue to work towards that in ways that we think are constructive and productive.” (Reporting by Humeyra Pamuk; writing by Simon Lewis; editing by Deepa Babington) Source link #Rubio #speaks #Israels #Netanyahu #troubled #Gaza #humanitarian #situation Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  20. Reptile wranglers find ‘weird’ diamondback rattlesnake in Arizona Reptile wranglers find ‘weird’ diamondback rattlesnake in Arizona May 15 (UPI) — Rattlesnake wranglers in Arizona shared a photo of a “weird” snake they came across in the backyard of a Scottsdale home. Rattlesnake Solutions posted photos to social media showing what appears to be a western diamondback rattlesnake with a leopard-like color pattern. The snake’s bright white tail base with ****** spots is “the only normal thing about it,” the business said. Western diamondbacks normally have diamond-shaped patterns on their bodies, but Rattlesnake Solutions said leopard-like pattern is “weird.” “In the many thousands of diamondbacks we’ve seen over the years, this is a first,” the post said. The cause was said to be likely a “big pattern mutation.” “The area it was in rules out hybridization possibilities with most species … not that there’s anything morphologically that indicates that,” the post said. “Of all the possibilities, it’s likely it’s just a funky-looking diamondback.” The business said the snake, which some commenters on the post speculated to be dead, was captured alive and “healthy.” Source link #Reptile #wranglers #find #weird #diamondback #rattlesnake #Arizona Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  24. ‘Could signal the beginning of the end’ ‘Could signal the beginning of the end’ Major Icelandic whaling company Hvalur has just announced that it will not hunt fin whales this summer, Mongabay reported. This announcement comes after a controversial decision by the government of Iceland to allow the company to operate, despite a total moratorium on whaling since 1986 by the International Whaling Commission. Iceland is one of three countries that still allow commercial whaling, along with Norway and Japan, which recently expanded operations. Hvalur cited the lack of demand from Japan as the reason it will not exercise its license to kill 209 fin whales this year. CEO Kristján Loftsson told Icelandic media Morgunblaðið that the price of Hvalur’s fin whale meat in Japan is “unfavorable and is worsening,” making it not commercially viable this year. “The market for Icelandic fin whale meat in Japan has been struggling for years — there is both a declining demand and a large stockpile of surplus of imported meat that remains unsold — so a lack of market in Japan is nothing new,” Sharon Livermore, director of marine conservation at the U.S. advocacy group International Fund for Animal ********, told Mongabay in an email. “It’s clear that killing hundreds of whales a year is an economic and environmental loser.” Ending whaling would be a major win for the environment. These fascinating species are some of the most intelligent creatures on the planet, play a key role in regulating their ocean ecosystems, and are becoming increasingly rare because of centuries of whaling and the rapidly shifting climate. Ending their unnecessary hunting could help ensure that they are preserved for future generations. Fin whale hunting in Iceland has already been an on-and-off proposition for the last several years. There was no commercial fin whale hunting from 2019 to 2021, and in June 2023, Iceland’s minister of food, agriculture, and fisheries suspended the activity in response to a report about how much whales suffer after being harpooned. Hvalur and another company, Tjaldtangi, were granted permission to resume operations last December, only for Hvalur to issue this announcement. Watch now: Giant snails invading New York City? However, minke whales are still being targeted. “The news that Hvalur hf. will not hunt fin whales this summer could signal the beginning of the end for whaling in the country,” U.K. NGO Whale and Dolphin Conservation said in an email to Mongabay. 25. Nissan considering plant closures in Japan, overseas, sources say Nissan considering plant closures in Japan, overseas, sources say Vehicles are offered for ***** at a Nissan dealership on December 18, 2024 in Libertyville, Illinois. Scott Olson | Getty Images Nissan is considering plans to shut two car assembly plants in Japan and overseas factories, including in Mexico, sources said on Saturday, as part of a cost-cutting plan the company flagged earlier this week. The automaker is mulling closing Japan’s Oppama plant, where Nissan started production in 1961, and the Shonan plant operated by Nissan Shatai, in which Nissan is a 50% stakeholder, the sources said, which would leave it with just three vehicle assembly plants in Japan. Overseas, Nissan is considering ending production at plants in South Africa, India and Argentina, and cutting the number of factories in Mexico, one of the sources said. Japan’s third-biggest automaker unveiled sweeping new cost cuts on Tuesday, saying it would reduce its workforce by around 15% and cut production plants to 10 from 17 globally as it seeks to push through a turnaround. The Yomiuri newspaper, which first reported the automakers’ possible closing of plants in Japan and overseas, said two factories in Mexico are under consideration. Nissan said in a statement on its website that reports on the potential closure of certain plants were speculative and not based on any official information of the company. “At this time, we will not be providing further comments on this matter,” Nissan said in the statement. “We are committed to maintaining transparency with our stakeholders and will communicate any relevant updates as necessary.” The more aggressive turnaround steps unveiled by new CEO Ivan Espinosa mark a sharp break with Nissan’s strategy under his predecessor Makoto Uchida, who had high hopes of expanding global production and had refused to close domestic plants. The automaker’s fiscal 2024 sales stood at 3.3 million vehicles, down 42% since the 2017 business year. In its statement on Saturday, Nissan said it had previously announced it would consolidate production of Nissan Frontier and Navara pickups from Mexico and Argentina into a single production hub centralised around the Civac plant in Mexico. It also said that it had announced in March that French alliance partner Renault would buy out its stake in their joint Indian business, Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Ltd (RNAIPL). The domestic plant closures would mark Nissan’s first since closing its Murayama factory in 2001. Keeping just three home plants open — its Tochigi factory and the Nissan Motor Kyushu and Nissan Shatai Kyushu plants in southern Fukuoka prefecture — would be more than enough to service the domestic market and maintain exports from Japan, one source said. The Oppama plant has annual capacity of around 240,000 cars and employed about 3,900 workers as of end-October. In 2010, it became Nissan’s first plant to start producing the Leaf, widely considered the world’s first mass-market electric vehicle. The Shonan plant, which produces commercial vans, has an annual capacity of around 150,000 units and employs about 1,200 people.
