Beth Potter wins World Triathlon Championship Series silver in Japan Beth Potter wins World Triathlon Championship Series silver in Japan Olympic triathlon double bronze medallist Beth Potter returned to action with second place in the World Triathlon Championship Series in Yokohama. Potter, who was 14th for Great Britain over 10km in last month’s European Road Running Championships, finished four seconds behind Luxembourg’s Jeanne Lehair with Germany’s Lisa Tertsch in third, two seconds back. Reigning Olympic and world champion Cassandre Beaugrand of France crashed out on lap six of the bike leg. Therese Feuersinger of Austria held a narrow lead over Tertsch and Lehair after the swim, with Potter and Beaugrand 14 seconds behind. Weather conditions resulted in a changed bike course and Potter and the chasing group caught up with the leaders by lap three. Lehair went clear in the run and held on for victory, despite the Briton running the fastest run leg in the race. 10. The photographs edited 150 years before Photoshop The photographs edited 150 years before Photoshop Vanessa Pearce BBC News, West Midlands Getty Images Henry Peach Robinson used his combination printing technique to produce an illustration of the Shakespearean verse “She never told her love” – a study in unrequited love A photographer who pioneered techniques to create detailed images by combining multiple negatives is being celebrated 170 years after he set up his first studio. Henry Peach Robinson was one of the most famous characters of his age, said photographic historian Dr Michael Pritchard, with his work winning awards and selling widely. “He really showed photographers at that time that photography could be art,” he added. Born in Ludlow, Shropshire, in 1830, Robinson studied drawing and painting while working in a bookshop in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire and he opened his first portrait studio in the town in 1855. He is being remembered by the town’s photographic society, with his story also highlighted in a book by a local history group. “By 1857 he was winning medals and awards for his art photography and that carried on right the way through to the 1890s,” explained Dr Pritchard, a former chief executive of the Royal Photographic Society. Getty Images The photographer showcased rural life in his work When the Days Work is Done, using multiple layers of negatives to produce the light and dark in the piece Robinson used “combination printing”, he said, creating a single image from multiple negatives. Using this technique allowed independent control of different parts of the scenes in the finished images. Getty Images Robinson was also a founding member of the Birmingham Photographic Society “It’s something we do today in Photoshop relatively easily but in the late 1850s and mid-19th Century it was a pretty groundbreaking technique,” said Dr Pritchard. “He became an absolute master of it and this was how he was able to create absolutely groundbreaking and stunning pictures.” Getty Images The photographer combined five separate negatives to produce the single image of Fading Away, showing the death of a young woman surrounded by her family In one of the earliest examples of his “pictorial” photography, Fading Away, Robinson combined five separate negatives to produce a scene showing a dying girl surrounded by her family. The image became incredibly popular despite Robinson’s technique and subject matter, which was considered too morbid by some. “As ever with that sort of genre photography of the time, there’s a deeper story around it and you know all sorts of issues around how the Victorians pictured death,” Dr Pritchard said. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York holds a copy of the image and it said on its website that the photo appealed to Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, who bought a print and issued a standing order for every major composite photograph Robinson would make. Leamington History Group In 1855, Robinson took a lease at 15 Upper Parade, Leamington Spa, where he built a studio in the garden and opened it to the public The photographer was also a founding member of the Birmingham Photographic Society and produced a number of books. “In terms of his importance for photography, I think he’s probably a little bit forgotten these days but at the time he was still seen as a very influential figure and someone that had made a massive impact on photography,” added Dr Pritchard. Leamington History Group Henry Peach Robinson’s story will be highlighted in a Leamington History Group publication, Creative Leamington, set to be published later this year In 1864, when he was 34, Robinson was forced to give up his Leamington studio due to ill health from being exposed to the toxic chemicals used at the time in photography. He moved to London and continued to work until his death in 1901 in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. “He was one of life’s interesting characters,” said Peter Chappell, the outgoing chair of the Leamington Photographic Society. “He was entrepreneurial, he was commercial but at the same time he was artistic and he was promoting photography as an art form,” he added. The society recently marked the 170-year anniversary by inviting celebrity photographer Rankin to the town for an event, which attracted more than 150 people. “That link about the world’s top portrait photographer of the 1800s living and working in Leamington Spa and we got the world’s top portrait photographer of current times actually coming to the town – that binds the whole story together,” added the outgoing vice chair Mark Godfrey. 12. China’s humanoid robots will not replace human workers, Beijing official says China’s humanoid robots will not replace human workers, Beijing official says By Eduardo Baptista BEIJING (Reuters) -China’s humanoid robots will not replace human workers and cause mass unemployment, according to a ******** official who oversees a tech hub in Beijing, amid a rapid expansion of the sector and state funding for it. Liang Liang, a deputy director at the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, which hosts one of China’s largest tech hubs, said in an interview on Friday with foreign media that he does not believe that humanoid robots will replace their human creators, but will boost productivity and operate in hazardous environments. “We don’t believe robots will make people unemployed, but rather they’ll boost efficiency or take on tasks humans are unwilling to do – like exploring the vast universe or the ocean depths where people can’t go. Machines can assist us in that exploration,” Liang said. “When it’s nighttime and humans need rest, machines could keep working, giving us better, cheaper, and more user-friendly products. So we see this as the direction for our future development,” he added. Liang explained that the world’s first robot half-marathon held last month in Beijing was deliberately set up in a way that would highlight his and other officials’ hopes that these humanoids will support and assist humans, rather than replace them. The half-marathon featured two tracks separated by a railing, with humans competing against each other on one side while on the other side 20 teams each operated a robot, varying wildly in size and ability. “You see, in the marathon, humans have their track where they push their physical limits, and the machines have their own track where they jointly challenge their limits – but they aren’t trying to take over the human course to sprint to the finish line. The future will be like this too,” Liang said. Liang spoke to reporters at the headquarters of state-backed X-Humanoid, also known as the Beijing Humanoid Robotics Innovation Centre, whose robot Tiangong Ultra won the inaugural robot half-marathon. Besides the sports-focused Ultra model, which can reach a top speed of 12 kph (7.56 mph), the centre also displayed other protypes that showed it was working on robots that can complete mundane tasks in the face of obstructions and changing environments. In one demonstration, an employee repeatedly moved the position of a piece of litter or snatched it from the robot’s hand, which would then relocate the object and carry out the task until it was completed, a self-corrective ability the centre says will be key in turning the humanoids into productive workers. 15. Tick season is back. How to stay safe around these risky bloodsuckers – National Tick season is back. How to stay safe around these risky bloodsuckers – National As Canadians flock outdoors for hiking, gardening and sunshine this spring, an unwelcome guest is making its seasonal return: ticks. Thanks to warming winters and milder temperatures, ticks are thriving in more parts of the country than ever before — bringing a growing risk of tick-borne illnesses like Lyme disease. ******-legged ticks, the species responsible for most Lyme disease cases in Canada, are expanding their range rapidly and are now found in parts of every southern province. This spread is closely tied to climate change, which allows ticks to survive winter and move into once-too-cold regions, putting more people and pets at risk. Although there are more than 40 tick species in Canada, the most common one is the ******-legged tick, also known as the deer tick, and its numbers are on the rise. These ticks become active once temperatures hit 4 C, and they’ll start looking for a blood meal from animals — or humans. Story continues below advertisement 1:52 Rare tick-borne disease is spreading in Canada, here’s what you should know “The ******-legged tick and the western ******-legged tick out in the West carry Lyme disease and other diseases. So when we’re bitten by ticks, we’re at risk of acquiring these diseases,” said Dr. Sarah Keating with the ********* Lyme Disease Foundation. This is because ticks are really good at spreading disease, she said. They have their own microbiome, just like we do, full of various microorganisms. When a tick starts feeding, some of these organisms can move into its salivary glands. Then, as the tick injects saliva into our skin to keep the blood flowing and avoid detection, those pathogens can enter our bloodstream and potentially cause disease. Milder winters mean more ticks can survive winter under leaf litter, Keating said. Story continues below advertisement “In the past, when we had very cold winters, ticks would come on migratory birds. But now they are surviving, and it’s becoming much more, particularly in certain areas of Canada … Nova Scotia, southern Quebec, southern Ontario, and southern Manitoba and southern B.C.” And the numbers back that up. Lyme disease is on the rise in Canada. In 2009, there were just 144 reported cases across the country, according to data from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). By 2021, that number had jumped to more than 2,800. Get weekly health news Receive the latest medical news and health information delivered to you every Sunday. That spike lines up with the growing range of ******-legged ticks, which are now found in parts of every southern province. Warmer weather and shifting ecosystems are helping these ticks spread north at a rate of 35 to 55 kilometres each year, studies suggest. While Lyme disease is the most well-known tick-borne illness in Canada, it’s far from the only one. As ******-legged ticks expand their territory, so does the range of diseases they can carry — and scientists are discovering new threats all the time. Story continues below advertisement “Babesiosis is a big one,” Keating said. “There are also illnesses like ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. New pathogens are being discovered all the time.” These lesser-known infections can sometimes be serious, especially for people with weakened immune systems. Lyme disease is caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacterium, which ticks can transmit to humans through a bite. It’s treatable, but early detection is key. 2:16 Woman opts for assisted death after years of struggling with Lyme disease “If someone knows they’ve been bitten by a tick and they develop a rash or flu-like symptoms shortly after, antibiotics can usually clear it up,” Keating said. “The problem is, many people don’t even know they’ve been bitten. The ticks can be tiny and bite you somewhere you don’t see — like your scalp or back.” Symptoms of Lyme disease often appear in stages. In the early phase, people might notice a bull’s-eye rash around the bite, fatigue, fever or muscle aches. If untreated, the infection can progress to more serious complications. Story continues below advertisement “After a few weeks, the nervous system can become involved — you might see facial paralysis like Bell’s palsy, joint pain and ongoing fatigue,” she said. “If it becomes chronic, it can even affect the brain and lead to mental health challenges like depression or, in rare cases, psychosis.” As ticks become more common across Canada, experts stress the importance of doing regular tick checks, especially after spending time outdoors in grassy, wooded or brushy areas. “It’s very important when people have been outside, especially in the forest or in long grasses, to do a tick check when they come back inside … a complete body tick check, including the scalp, and also to check young children who can’t check themselves,” Keating said. Trending Now Canada Post ‘effectively insolvent’ as strike looms. Report suggests fixes ‘Dumb as a rock’: Trump fires back at ‘obnoxious jerk’ Bruce Springsteen But ticks aren’t just a problem in the woods; they can also be found in urban areas, including city parks and backyards, explained Justin Wood, CEO of Geneticks, a ********* company that tests ticks for Lyme disease. Story continues below advertisement 3:49 Tick Season: Essential tips to protect your pets “What I always tell people is that anywhere that birds can go, ticks can go as well,” he said. “Ticks often attach to birds and that’s how they kind of move around locally and across the country, even across the continent.” Wood also stressed the importance of doing a thorough tick check after spending time outdoors. While adult ticks are easier to spot — about the size of a blueberry when fully engorged — nymphs can be much harder to see, sometimes no ******* than a freckle. If you do find a tick, he said, the first thing to do is safely remove it. This can be done by using fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible, then pulling upward. Story continues below advertisement “As soon as the tick is off, you can start making decisions about what to do next. Our suggestion is always to test the ticks,” Wood said. “We don’t have great diagnostics in the early stages of Lyme disease, so if you’ve been bitten, it can be very difficult to tell in the earlier stages if there’s been transmission of disease. Testing ticks can help people make more informed decisions with the help of their health-care practitioner about what the best next steps are.” Besides doing tick checks, there are other effective ways to help prevent tick bites. Wearing long sleeves and pants, using insect repellent with DEET or icaridin and sticking to the centre of trails can all reduce your risk, he said. Pets, especially dogs, can be a major pathway for ticks to enter your home, even if they’re not showing any signs of a bite. Story continues below advertisement “There are preventative medications that can either be taken once a month or once every three months that prevent ticks in dogs,” Keating said. “If a tick bites the animal, it’ll drop off immediately.” Still, she warned that ticks can hitch a ride in a dog’s fur and make their way into your home, even if they don’t bite your ****. Ticks love to hitch a ride on dogs, so it’s important to check them after they’ve been outside, experts say. Global News “If they’re sitting on your lap or sleeping on your bed, the ticks can then crawl onto the humans,” she said. “That is a significant risk for **** owners.” Doing tick checks on pets, especially after walks or time outside, is just as important as checking yourself. But it’s not always easy. “I have a big ****** dog,” Keating added, “and it’s difficult to find ticks on him.” Story continues below advertisement She encouraged **** owners to talk to their veterinarians about tick prevention and medication available. 19. Why Maguire resisted urge to rip up Mam’s contract Why Maguire resisted urge to rip up Mam’s contract Brisbane coach Michael Maguire has no regrets about giving Ezra Mam the opportunity to salvage his career. After serving a nine-match ban, the 22-year-old will play his first NRL game in 2025 on Sunday, seven months after a head-on collision with an Uber where he drove unlicensed and with drugs in his system. The three occupants of the Uber were injured, including a young girl. There were calls externally for Mam to have his contract torn up but the club resisted and allowed their star playmaker to redeem himself. “When I first walked in, I looked at the scenario. I take people for who they are. I was fortunate to know Ezra from five or six years ago,” he said. “I got to know the family and I know the person. Ezra to his credit has taken on board what he’s been through. “He has grown as a man and what I have seen him do around the place, is the reason why I’m glad I kept him. He is really hungry to get out there and play with his teammates. “Last week, he went back to (Souths Logan) and he was just excited about playing. He was excited about playing for the Broncos and the people he’s had plenty of cheers from.” Maguire said the first day he arrived at the club Mam had to own his mistake. He also said he was determined to “have a look at how (Mam) ended up getting in that situation”. Maguire discovered, when he investigated the culture at the club in 2024, Mam had been caught up in an environment where alcohol-fuelled partying was far too prevalent. CEO David Donaghy alluded to it in October last year when he said the club had cultural challenges and its football program had lost its focus. Mam checked into a rehabilitation facility and worked on changing his lifestyle and his behaviour. He worked on a building site and did other activities behind the scenes to rebuild his life. There have been plenty of people involved in the game that wanted Mam to be suspended for the entire year. The NRL made the call for a nine-month suspension, a ban which ended last week when Mam returned to the field for Souths Logan in the Queensland Cup. Broncos great Steve Renouf said Maguire had made the right call by sticking with Mam. “I do admire Madge for that. He understands young men. He just couldn’t throw him on the scrap heap,” Renouf said. “Ezra has done his time. Whether people agree with his punishment or not that is the suspension he was given. He has done it and he has done it with grace. Now he just has to get on with it. “Yes, he stuffed up but he will never do that again.”Prop Pat Carrigan said he was glad to have Mam back. “Ez’ made a mistake, but part of his growth as a young man and a member of our club was to own that and move forward and he has done that,” he said. “To see his progress over the last 10 to 11 weeks, not only on the field, but off the field, he has earned the opportunity to come back and he will have to keep working on himself.” Source link #Maguire #resisted #urge #rip #***** #contract Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Whenever we arrive at any of the ovals, it kind of brings an element of crazy and the kids just go bananas,” she said. “We’re hoping that this will spread right throughout WA and even over to the eastern states. That’s our main goal…we would really like to extend that nationwide. Camera IconWest Coast Eagle Josh Kennedy with Simon Kane Right) for SuperKids SuperHeroes round in 2022. 23. Not ‘kids’ – men: Nank drives high standard at Tigers Not ‘kids’ – men: Nank drives high standard at Tigers Just because it will take time doesn’t mean Richmond are tempering the expectations on their healthy crop of young AFL talent. Sunday’s clash with North Melbourne at the MCG will be a checkpoint for two teams at the bottom of the table who are deep into their rebuilds. The Tigers – tipped pre-season to not win a game – are coming off a tight win over West Coast and look on the right track. North took a big step in the right direction last weekend when they drew with reigning premiers Brisbane. The Tigers’ strategy is clear for the post-Dustin Martin era, stocking up on high draft picks and blending them with premiership stars such as captain Toby Nankervis. Sunday’s win was equal parts Nathan Broad’s experience across half-back and Tom Brown’s game-saving tackle in the last minute. Nankervis says just while their youngsters are learning, they’re also being held to account. “You say ‘kids’ – to me, they’re not kids, they’re men. We expect them to behave like men, play like men. That’s reality,” he told AAP. “When you put on the jumper, you have a responsibility – it doesn’t matter if you’re 18 or 28 or 35. “That’s the environment we want to create. It’s awesome, they bring so much enthusiasm, the young players – I’m just absolutely eating it up.” Nankervis echoed the sentiments of coach Adem Yze this week, when asked about the outside noise around what the Tigers might do this season. Surely he and a few of the other Richmond veterans had their pride pricked by the predictions of Punt Rd doom? Nankervis, like Yze, says he couldn’t care less. “If you rely on external influences to get yourself up, you’re kidding yourself, really,” Nankervis said. “We work so hard, we have our system and our process. Whatever happens externally will happen. “Your wins are great and that’s why we play the game, but it’s more about our system and the way we play. “That’s what the best teams do for four quarters, that’s what we see teams do in finals. That’s the team we want to become … we’ll get there.” Source link #kids #men #Nank #drives #high #standard #Tigers Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
