  1. Saturday Lotto: Two lucky West Aussies win life-changing division one prizes Saturday Lotto: Two lucky West Aussies win life-changing division one prizes Saturday’s Lotto saw two lucky West Aussies win a life-changing half a million dollars each after they matched the winning numbers in Saturday night’s draw. Three players won the division one prize of $1,690,125.75. Two out of three of them are from WA and will walk away with a cool $563,375.25 each. West Aussies were lucky across the board this evening with 12 out of the 42 players pocketing a share of the $14,571 division 2 prize coming from WA. The winning numbers are 31, 40, 44, 37, 9 and 19. The supplementary numbers are 5 and 11. Lotto success in the west comes after Friday’s millionaire medley saw one Aussie from elsewhere in the country snagging the entire $1 million prize. As well as leaving you in with a chance of winning, Saturday Lotto ticket sales also contribute to supporting hundred of community organisations across WA. “Since the start of the year, Saturday Lotto ticket sales have raised more than $38 million for Lotterywest’s grants program.” says Lotterywest spokesperson Sarah Dawson. 2. These stocks, including UnitedHealth, became the most oversold names this week These stocks, including UnitedHealth, became the most oversold names this week UnitedHealth was noticeably absent from the major averages’ surge this past week – and shares of the beleaguered insurer have become historically oversold. The health insurance giant was one of a small handful of names to sit out this week’s rally, in which stocks rebounded after U.S. and ******** officials agreed to slash tariffs for 90 days. The S & P 500 posted a weekly gain of 5.3%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average became positive for 2025. In what was an ugly week for UnitedHealth, the insurer’s shares touched a fresh 5-year low on Thursday after The Wall Street Journal reported that the Department of Justice is conducting a criminal investigation into the company over possible Medicare fraud. The shares were down 23% on the week. Using the CNBC Pro stock screener tool , we identified the most oversold and overbought stocks this week by weighing their 14-day relative strength index reading. A result below 30 signals that a stock might be oversold and could be due for a trading rebound. An RSI above 70 may suggest that a stock is overbought and could soon slip. UnitedHealth shares have an RSI of 14.9, per the screener. Analysts polled by LSEG still rate the stock a buy and have a price target that indicates more than 64% potential upside, according to Thursday’s closing price. This week, the stock’s RSI reading also reached a level that marked its deepest oversold condition since the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, Wolfe Research found. Since the RSI varies from one week to the next and only refers to short-term trading sentiment, investors should be aware that UnitedHealth shares aren’t guaranteed to see a jump based on this indicator alone. That’s especially the case if other negative headlines surface and further dampen sentiment. UnitedHealth’s shares have declined sharply since the company in mid-April cut its annual profit forecast , citing higher-than-expected medical costs in its privately run Medicare plans. The stock is down 50% in the past month. To be sure, UnitedHealth shares saw a 6.4% rebound on Friday as some of the company’s insiders purchased shares . Fiserv was also among the oversold this week, with an RSI of 27.6. Shares slid more than 9% over the past week, after the company’s management revealed during JPMorgan’s technology conference that its Clover business’s second-quarter growth rate would be similar to the pace in the first quarter. Analysts remain largely bullish on the name and see nearly 38% upside, though. Stocks that appear overbought, on the other hand, include Microsoft , Broadcom and NRG Energy . NRG Energy is the most overbought of the group with an RSI of roughly 80. Shares of the power company soared 33% this week after NRG announced on Monday it struck a deal valued at $12 billion to buy natural gas generation assets from LS Power. Because of the deal, the company lifted its compound annual growth rate for its adjusted earnings per share to 14% over the next five years, up from 10% previously. Tech companies Microsoft and chipmaker Broadcom have an RSI of 74.3 and 75.1, respectively. Citi analyst Tyler Radke hiked his price target on Microsoft, citing the company’s fiscal third-quarter earnings and revenue beat and its announcement Tuesday that it plans to lay off roughly 3% of its workforce. Microsoft shares posted a weekly gain of 3.5%. Other overbought stocks are discount retailer Ross Stores and heating, cooling and manufacturing company Trane Technologies . 3. Israel says killed Hezbollah commander in south Lebanon Israel says killed Hezbollah commander in south Lebanon Israel’s military said it killed a local Hezbollah commander on Saturday in south Lebanon, where authorities reported one dead in the fourth Israeli strike within days despite a November ceasefire. Lebanon’s health ministry said one person was killed in an Israeli “drone strike” on a vehicle in south Lebanon’s Tyre district. An AFP correspondent saw the charred wreckage of a vehicle in Abu al-Aswad, an area around 30 kilometres (20 miles) from the Israeli border. The Israeli military said in a statement that its forces “struck and eliminated… a commander” involved in “the re-establishment of Hezbollah terrorist infrastructure” in south Lebanon. Israel has continued to launch strikes on its neighbour despite the November 27 truce which sought to halt more than a year of hostilities with Hezbollah militants including two months of full-blown war. The Israeli military said that “the rebuilding of terrorist infrastructure and related activity constitutes a blatant violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon.” Earlier this week, the Israeli military said three separate strikes in south Lebanon targeted Hezbollah operatives. Under the ceasefire, the Iran-backed Hezbollah was to pull back its fighters north of Lebanon’s Litani River and dismantle any remaining military infrastructure to its south. Israel was to withdraw all its forces from Lebanon, but it has kept troops in five areas that it deems “strategic”. The Lebanese army has been deploying in the area as Israeli forces have withdrawn and has been dismantling Hezbollah infrastructure there. At an Arab summit in Baghdad on Saturday, Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam denounced “daily Israeli violations” of Lebanese sovereignty and “the ongoing Israeli occupation of positions” in the south. He said Lebanon was working to “fully implement” a United Nations Security Council resolution that formed the basis of the ceasefire. The resolution says Lebanese troops and UN peacekeepers should be the only forces in south Lebanon, and calls for the disarmament of all non-state groups. Salam again urged international pressure “to oblige Israel to stop its attacks and immediately and fully withdraw from all Lebanese territory”. bur-str-jos/lg/ami Source link #Israel #killed #Hezbollah #commander #south #Lebanon Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Its Couchbase Mobile is a full-featured embedded NoSQL database for mobile and edge devices that enables an always-on experience with high data availability. Stock Market Value: $1.01B ($18.77 per share) Stock Chart IconStock chart icon Couchbase in 2025 Activist: Irenic Capital Management Ownership: n/a Average Cost: n/a Activist Commentary: Irenic Capital was founded in October 2021 by Adam Katz, a former portfolio manager at Elliott Investment Management, and Andy Dodge, a former investment partner at Indaba Capital Management. Irenic invests in public companies and works collaboratively with firm leadership. Their activism has thus far focused on strategic activism, recommending spinoffs and sales of businesses. What’s happening Irenic has taken a position in Couchbase (BASE). Behind the scenes Couchbase (BASE) provides a cloud database platform for modern applications. There are two types of databases: relational, such as Amazon, Oracle and Sybase; and document, intended for agile and mobile-centric applications. There are only two public companies operating in the documents database space: MongoDB and Couchbase. With few direct peers, the company has built a rock-solid business with enterprise-grade platforms used in applications from mobile apps to airline systems. The company originally went public on Feb. 22, 2021, but has since failed to impress in the public markets, with shares down over 20% since its initial public offering. The primary problem facing Couchbase is one common to young tech companies – the pressure to deliver high growth to meet the demands of its investor base. The company has done just that as revenue has increased every year since its IPO at 19.39% on average and gross margins have been incredibly high and consistent between 87% and 89% each year. However, reaching these revenue goals has come at the detriment of the company’s margins and profitability. In 2024, selling, general and administrative expenses was 91.94% of revenue, staggeringly high for almost any other company, but just slightly high for Couchbase, which has averaged 91.25% since its IPO. For context, MongoDB’s SG&A expense was 54.34% of revenue in 2024. Among other things, Couchbase has vastly overhired sales reps and managers to meet their growth targets. As a result, there isn’t enough business to go around: While peers’ reps hit their attainment goals at a 70% to 80% average, Couchbase’s reps only hit them at 40% to 50%. In sum, Couchbase is a good company with a great product that is organically growing by mid double digits, but it is so focused on growth at all costs, that it is decimating its operating margins by investing millions of dollars to squeeze out a few additional percentage points of growth. But this is not completely management’s fault. We have been experiencing a market where growth is king and any erosion in growth rates could start a company’s stock on a downward trajectory. Enter Irenic Capital, which has taken a significant stake in Couchbase and made the company one of its five largest positions. There are two paths for an activist to potentially create value from this point. The first is through an operational restructuring: right-sizing management and the salesforce, optimizing capital allocation and improving operating margins while continuing to organically grow. This path would require a lot of time, money and heavy lifting from both Couchbase and the activist, likely involving Irenic securing board representation followed by years of collaboration and restructuring. Doing this could get the company at or over the Rule of 40 with lower growth rates but much higher operating margins, but it may not be pretty along the way. The stock would be likely to decline in the short term as growth declines as operating margins rise. This brings us to the second option, which is to explore a ***** of the company. While we are not generally fans of “sell-the-company” activism as it is often short-term minded in nature, there is a rationale for it here as the best way to maximize shareholder value on a risk-adjusted basis. The steps outlined above required to maximize the value of this business would best be done in private where there is no stock price fluctuation based on quarterly guidance and growth rates. A ***** to either a larger strategic or financial acquirer would allow Couchbase to right-size its costs and pursue more organic, margin-friendly growth away from the pressures of the public market. Given both the viability of the options at hand and Irenic’s track record of calling for and successfully assisting companies in take-private transactions, we expect that the firm’s plan will follow the latter. As a growing company with a unique and stable business model, there would be no shortage of potential acquirers for Couchbase. There have been many strategic takeouts in the data/tech space including IBM’s announcement that it would acquire DataStax and Progress Software’s acquisition of MarkLogic. Moreover, with the recent push for consolidation in the space, Couchbase would also be a viable strategic asset for larger players like Amazon, Microsoft’s Azure, Alphabet’s Google or other industry leaders looking to bolster their data offerings. However, it seems like the more likely outcome is a take-private transaction via private equity, and one private equity investor could be a good contender. Haveli Investments, a PE firm founded by former Vista Equity Partners president Brian Sheth, is the largest shareholder in Couchbase with an approximately 9.8% ownership based on its latest 13D filling. Haveli is not a frequent 13D filer, nor is it the firm’s strategy to take ********* stakes in public companies. This appears to be more of a toehold for Haveli in a company it thinks is undervalued and might want to own. Haveli has only filed one other 13D in its history, on Blend Labs, which led to a strategic partnership shortly thereafter. While there aren’t many public takeout comps to Couchbase, the closest would be Clayton, Dubilier & Rice and KKR’s purchase of Cloudera in 2021 for $5.3 billion, or around 5.2-times revenue. While 5.2-times would imply only a 20% premium for shareholders, that might be acceptable to Irenic as Couchbase has closed as low as $13.44 per share over the past month and Irenic likely has a lower average cost than the $17.64 level where it ended April 30, the day news of the firm’s position came out. Additionally, it is possible that Couchbase could get an offer closer to the 6-times revenue figure where some of its peers trade. Ken Squire is the founder and president of 13D Monitor, an institutional research service on shareholder activism, and the founder and portfolio manager of the 13D Activist Fund, a mutual fund that invests in a portfolio of activist 13D investments. 6. Trump wants coal to power AI data centers – the tech industry is wary Trump wants coal to power AI data centers – the tech industry is wary President Donald Trump wants to revive the struggling coal industry in the U.S. by deploying plants to power the data centers that the Big Tech companies are building to train artificial intelligence. Trump issued an executive order in April that directed his Cabinet to find areas of the U.S. where coal-powered infrastructure is available to support AI data centers and determine whether the infrastructure can be expanded to meet the growing electricity demand from the nation’s tech sector. Trump has repeatedly promoted coal as power source for data centers. The president told the World Economic Forum in January that he would approve power plants for AI through emergency declaration, calling on the tech companies to use coal as a backup power source. “They can fuel it with anything they want, and they may have coal as a backup — good, clean coal,” the president said. Trump’s push to deploy coal runs afoul of the tech companies’ environmental goals. In the short-term, the industry’s power needs may inadvertently be extending the life of existing coal plants. Coal produces more carbon dioxide emissions per kilowatt hour of power than any other energy source in the U.S. with the exception of oil, according to the Energy Information Administration. The tech industry has invested billions of dollars to expand renewable energy and is increasingly turning to nuclear power as a way to meet its growing electricity demand while trying to reduce carbon dioxide emissions that fuel climate change. For coal miners, Trump’s push is a potential lifeline. The industry has been in decline as coal plants are being retired in the U.S. About 16% of U.S. electricity generation came from burning coal in 2023, down from 51% in 2001, according to EIA data. Peabody Energy CEO James Grech, who attended Trump’s executive order ceremony at the White House, said “coal plants can shoulder a heavier load of meeting U.S. generation demands, including multiple years of data center growth.” Peabody is one of the largest coal producers in the U.S. Grech said coal plants should ramp up how much power they dispatch. The nation’s coal fleet is dispatching about 42% of its maximum capacity right now, compared to a historical average of 72%, the CEO told analysts on the company’s May 6 earnings call. “We believe that all coal-powered generators need to defer U.S. coal plant retirements as the situation on the ground has clearly changed,” Grech said. “We believe generators should un-retire coal plants that have recently been mothballed.” Tech sector reaction There is a growing acknowledgment within the tech industry that fossil fuel generation will be needed to help meet the electricity demand from AI. But the focus is on natural gas, which emits less half the CO2 of coal per kilowatt hour of power, according the the EIA. “To have the energy we need for the grid, it’s going to take an all of the above approach for a ******* of time,” Kevin Miller, Amazon’s vice president of global data centers, said during a panel discussion at conference of tech and oil and gas executives in Oklahoma City last month. “We’re not surprised by the fact that we’re going to need to add some thermal generation to meet the needs in the short term,” Miller said. Thermal generation is a code word for gas, said Nat Sahlstrom, chief energy officer at Tract, a Denver-based company that secures land, infrastructure and power resources for data centers. Sahlstrom previously led Amazon’s energy, water and sustainability teams. Executives at Amazon, Nvidia and Anthropic would not commit to using coal, mostly dodging the question when asked during the panel at the Oklahoma City conference. “It’s never a simple answer,” Amazon’s Miller said. “It is a combination of where’s the energy available, what are other alternatives.” Nvidia is able to be agnostic about what type of power is used because of the position the chipmaker occupies on the AI value chain, said Josh Parker, the company’s senior director of corporate sustainability. “Thankfully, we leave most of those decisions up to our customers.” Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark said there are a broader set of options available than just coal. “We would certainly consider it but I don’t know if I’d say it’s at the top of our list.” Sahlstrom said Trump’s executive order seems like a “dog whistle” to coal mining constituents. There is a big difference between looking at existing infrastructure and “actually building new power plants that are cost competitive and are going to be existing 30 to 40 years from now,” the Tract executive said. Coal is being displaced by renewables, natural gas and existing nuclear as coal plants face increasingly difficult economics, Sahlstrom said. “Coal has kind of found itself without a job,” he said. “I do not see the hyperscale community going out and signing long term commitments for new coal plants,” the former Amazon executive said. (The tech companies ramping up AI are frequently referred to as “hyperscalers.”) “I would be shocked if I saw something like that happen,” Sahlstrom said. Coal retirements strain grid But coal plant retirements are creating a real challenge for the grid as electricity demand is increasing due to data centers, re-industrialization and the broader electrification of the economy. The largest grid in the nation, the PJM Interconnection, has forecast electricity demand could surge 40% by 2039. PJM warned in 2023 that 40 gigawatts of existing power generation, mostly coal, is at risk of retirement by 2030, which represents about 21% of PJM’s installed capacity. Data centers will temporarily prolong coal demand as utilities scramble to maintain grid reliability, delaying their decarbonization goals, according to a Moody’s report from last October. Utilities have already postponed the retirement of coal plants totaling about 39 gigawatts of power, according to data from the National Mining Association. “If we want to grow America’s electricity production meaningfully over the next five or ten years, we [have] got to stop closing coal plants,” Energy Secretary Chris Wright told CNBC’s “Money Movers” last month. But natural gas and renewables are the future, Sahlstrom said. Some 60% of the power sector’s emissions reductions over the past 20 years are due to gas displacing coal, with the remainder coming from renewables, Sahlstrom said. “That’s a pretty powerful combination, and it’s hard for me to see people going backwards by putting more coal into the mix, particularly if you’re a hyperscale customer who has net-zero carbon goals,” he said. 12. Phantom Parade’ Even if It Was a Major Disappointment Phantom Parade’ Even if It Was a Major Disappointment Video game adaptations of popular anime and manga series are hardly as successful as the original versions, and this has been a concerning issue for the franchises. From One Piece to Naruto, every prominent anime series has suffered this fate, and now, the same has happened to Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen, one of the biggest names of recent times. Jujutsu Kaisen received a mobile action RPG called Jujutsu Kaisen: Phantom Parade, which was developed by Sumzap, Inc. and published by TOHO Games. The game came out last year, and while it initially made a lot of noise, it eventually got tagged as another failed video game adaptation because of multiple aspects that ruined its overall appeal. However, even though Jujutsu Kaisen: Phantom Parade failed as a game, fans of the series should experience it at least once. The reason behind this is the unique storylines that the video game features, which are not a part of the original story. Jujutsu Kaisen: Phantom Parade was another failed video game attempt For the past few years, the Jujutsu Kaisen story has been at an all-time high because of the ongoing developments within the series. Thus, the creators of the franchise decided to follow the most stereotypical path for any successful anime or manga. It also entered the video game field and released the action RPG game called Jujutsu Kaisen: Phantom Parade, specifically for mobile users. While the game was initially announced in 2021, it was supposed to be released in 2022 but eventually got pushed to 2024. The game generated a lot of hype, especially because it received a special opening movie, which was animated by MAPPA. However, all the hype turned into disappointment as the game failed to live up to the expectations of Jujutsu Kaisen fans. The game had a lot of inconsistencies in terms of content, gameplay, and gacha mechanics. While the animation of the game was great, other elements ruined the overall progression, and it didn’t feel thrilling enough. Thus, Jujutsu Kaisen: Phantom Parade also got added to the list of failed video game adaptations that hurt the fame of the original anime and manga series. Fans should still give Jujutsu Kaisen: Phantom Parade a chance As mentioned above, Jujutsu Kaisen: Phantom Parade was another failed video game adaptation, but fans should at least try it once. The reason behind this is the original content that is created specifically for the video game by the creators. The game might be based on the same premise as the original Jujutsu Kaisen story, but certain plots are new and totally unique, giving the video game an edge. It also features some original characters like Saki Rindo, Kensuke Nagino, and Kaito Yuki, who are not a part of the original story. These characters are quite interesting and are developed within the same contrast as the characters from the source story. All these elements might feel a little different from the original Jujutsu Kaisen narrative, but their tone is quite similar to the dark themes of Gege Akutami’s masterpiece. Gojo in Jujutsu Kaisen: Phantom Parade | Credit: Suzmap All in all, Jujutsu Kaisen: Phantom Parade might be a disappointing mobile action RPG game, but the original story and character developments make it worth it for fans who are craving some Jujutsu Kaisen content. It works as the perfect filler until the new season of Jujutsu Kaisen anime is released by MAPPA. Jujutsu Kaisen is currently available to watch on Crunchyroll. 15. Essendon’s promising run ends in brutal fashion Essendon’s promising run ends in brutal fashion The Western Bulldogs have provided a brutal reality check for Essendon, booting the first nine goals to set up a 91-point demolition of the Bombers at Marvel Stadium. After winning five of their previous six games, Essendon had the chance to test their credentials against a genuine finals contender on Saturday night. But they wilted against the red-hot Bulldogs, who showed no ill-effects following a match in the sapping Darwin humidity last week. The Dogs’ 18.19 (127) to 5.6 (36) victory came in front of 47,366 fans, with many of the Bombers fans making an early exit amid the on-field carnage. Essendon didn’t register their first goal of the match until the 17th-minute of the second quarter, and didn’t add another in the first half to be 59 adrift at the main break. After slumping to 0-2, the Bombers’ only defeat before facing the Bulldogs had been to premiership favourites Collingwood. But their five victories had come against bottom-seven teams, meaning a clash with the high-flying Bulldogs (6-4) was always going to be a serious challenge. The Bulldogs had game-breakers everywhere, typically led by captain Marcus Bontempelli, who slotted the first goal of the match. Dashing defender Bailey Dale had a career-best night, gathering a a club record 49 possessions as Essendon failed to curb his influence in any way. By three-quarter time, Dale had already equalled the Bulldogs’ record of 32 uncontested possessions in a game. The 28-year-old broke the possession mark for a Bulldogs late in the last quarter, previously held by former captain Ryan Griffen. Small forward Rhylee West was imposing in the air and on the ground inside-50, finishing with a game-high four goals The Bulldogs, who are without star forward Sam Darcy long-term, also hammered Port Adelaide by 90 points two weeks ago. Bulldogs forward Arty Jones, who was recalled for his first game since round two was subbed out early in the second term with a hamstring injury. The Bulldogs have a five-day break before heading to Geelong for a Thursday night showdown against the Cats, as they meet former teammate Bailey Smith for the first time. Essendon have a chance to rebound when they face rebuilding Richmond in the Dreamtime match next Friday night. 16. Five ‘high quality’ stocks with major upside, per Bank of America Five ‘high quality’ stocks with major upside, per Bank of America There’s a slew of stocks that are firing on all cylinders, according to Bank of America. The firm said buy-rated stocks like Disney, Palantir Technologies , Cadence Design Systems, KLA Corp and Planet Fitness have plenty more room to run. CNBC Pro combed through Bank of America research to find names with upside. Disney Shares of the entertainment giant have room for upside following the company’s recent earnings report, according to analyst Jessica Reif Ehrlich. “Resilient in the face of choppy macro trends,” she wrote in a note to clients. The firm sees no shortage of positive catalysts in the months ahead including a robust slate of upcoming films, growth in direct-to-consumer and more investment in the parks business. The entertainment giant is also well positioned overseas as Disney announced a new park in the Middle East earlier this month. “International attendance remains strong, although per cap spending is weaker due to a challenged ******** consumer,” the analyst noted The stock is up almost 25% this month, and Reif Ehrlich said clients should buy shares now. Palantir The defense tech company is also going full throttle, according to Bank of America. Analyst Mariana Perez Mora and team raised their price target on the stock earlier this week to $150 per share from $125. The firm said Palantir continues to have a differentiated offering for investors. “We see PLTR as the market definer for organizations leveraging [artificial intelligence] to drive accelerated tangible results,” she wrote. However, it’s the company’s growth potential that has the firm staying bullish. “The speed and scale at which PLTR can deploy products and convert customers is growing,” Mora added. Meanwhile, shares are up 71% this year with plenty more room to run. “A blue-ribbon recipe for growth,” she said. Planet Fitness Analyst Alexander Perry is standing by shares of the fitness giant following the company’s recent earnings report. Planet Fitness is well positioned to benefit from a “generational shift,” the firm said. That’s because the Gen Z and millennial cohorts are prioritizing fitness and leisure activities, Perry wrote. “PLNT’s strategy has aligned with the fastest growing fitness trends, as it was quick to identify the prioritization of strength by younger demographics and began tailoring its marketing and equipment approach accordingly,” he said. Perry also said the company has a unique business model to go along with fast improving unit growth. The company also has relatively little tariff exposure, he added. Shares of the company are up 51% over the last 12 months. Cadence Design Systems “High quality compounder, resilient complexity leverage, low tariff risk. … We rate CDNS Buy. We like CDNS leading position in an EDA [electronic design automation] industry that is levered to the same secular trends as semis but with much more muted cyclicality. We think CDNS has defensiveness/scarcity value, and is a unique beneficiary of rising chip complexity.” KLA Corporation “Best-in-class margins, high-quality compounder. … We believe KLAC’s importance as a key enabler of new manufacturing technologies is underappreciated as it provides the equipment needed to inspect/monitor chips for defects. The necessity for its systems has made KLAC’s business less cyclical and more profitable that its peers, resulting in more stable FCF and shareholder returns.” Disney “Resilient in the face of choppy macro trends. … Strong trends in Experiences and continuing to invest. … Intl attendance remains strong, although per cap spending is weaker due to a challenged ******** consumer. … Near term catalysts include: 1) profitability inflection in DTC, 2) reacceleration in the Parks business and 3) strong film slate which drives other businesses…” Palantir Technologies “We see PLTR as the market definer for organizations leveraging AI to drive accelerated tangible results. … The speed and scale at which PLTR can deploy products and convert customers is growing. … A blue-ribbon recipe for growth. … We see Palantir as a beneficiary of rapidly growing demand for Artificial Intelligence (AI)-platforms in both commercial and government end-markets.” Planet Fitness “PLNT to benefit from generational shift to healthy habits. … PLNT’s strategy has aligned with the fastest growing fitness trends, as it was quick to identify the prioritization of strength by younger demographics and began tailoring its marketing and equipment approach accordingly. … Better franchisee economics should accelerate unit growth.” Source link #high #quality #stocks #major #upside #Bank #America Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  19. Dallas woman divorcing her husband after over secret $1M debt — but Ramsey Show hosts tell her to own her part Dallas woman divorcing her husband after over secret $1M debt — but Ramsey Show hosts tell her to own her part When you enter into a marriage, you expect your spouse to be faithful. But sometimes, a different type of infidelity — financial — can rear its ugly head. That’s what happened to Cathy from Dallas, Texas, who recently called into The Ramsey Show seeking urgent financial advice. Cathy revealed to co-hosts Ken Coleman and ***** Warshaw that she suspects her to-be ex-husband has racked up close to $1 million in debt behind her back — and she’s worried that she’s on the hook for half of it. Cathy filed for divorce in late April, after learning about her husband’s ongoing financial infidelity — however, after a 27-year marriage, she’s trying to escape as unscathed as possible. Here is what Coleman and Warshaw had to say. Money can be a huge driver of marital strife — especially when one spouse keeps secrets. A late 2021 survey by the National Endowment for Financial Education found that 43% of people with combined finances in a relationship have committed an act of financial infidelity. For 39%, that meant hiding a purchase or bank statement from their partner. For 19%, it meant hiding cash. And for 16% of people, financial infidelity ultimately led to divorce. Cathy, meanwhile, blames her situation on the fact that she allowed her husband to handle the family finances for many years while she became a stay-at-home mom to their four children. But when she did some digging, she learned that her now-ex had been keeping many financial secrets. For one thing, he hadn’t paid income taxes in three years, which amounts to about a $160,000 debt. Since their taxes are filed jointly, Cathy assumes she’ll be liable for half that sum. The husband also owes $80,000 in credit card debt on cards Cathy didn’t know exist (and there may be more). Plus, there’s a $550,000 mortgage on Cathy’s husband’s office building that she signed. On top of everything else, in 2019, Cathy’s husband borrowed $500,000 from Cathy after she received an inheritance, which she is counting towards the debt. He claimed he was spending the money on his business. Story Continues But Cathy doesn’t have a record of how that money was spent, and Coleman and Warshaw told her to assume that’s money she won’t ever get back. “I feel like an ******,” Cathy said while describing the situation. Warshaw and Coleman said they believe Cathy is going to be responsible for 50% of certain debts her name is on. However, it’s unclear as to how much she’ll actually owe or whether there is additional outstanding debt, as her ex isn’t forthcoming with the information. However, thanks to the IRS’s innocent spouse relief program, Cathy may not be liable for her spouse’s tax debt if she didn’t know about the errors — and if the $80,000 in credit card debt isn’t in her name, she may be off the hook there, too. So all told, Coleman thinks Cathy is looking at owing at least $250,000 in debt — presumably from her half of the mortgage on her spouse’s office building. Thankfully, Cathy and her spouse own a paid-off home worth about $2 million. So, there are some assets that can be used to pay off the debt. But Warshaw had to gently admonish Cathy for letting the situation get to this point. “It can’t just be, ‘he handles that, I handle this,'” Warshaw said. “You also have to own your part in it.” Read more: You’re probably already overpaying for this 1 ‘must-have’ expense — and thanks to Trump’s tariffs, your monthly bill could soar even higher. Here’s how 2 minutes can protect your wallet right now “This is not the end of the world,” said Coleman, when describing Cathy’s situation. In addition to being able to leverage an existing asset (her paid off house), Cathy just got a job as an appellate attorney and expects to make $130,000 this year. Between her salary and splitting the proceeds of selling the house, Coleman and Warshaw expect that she’ll come out okay. “It sounds like there is going to be enough assets for you to clear your debt and still have a decent amount of money,” Warshaw reassured Cathy. “You’ll be OK long-term,” Coleman said, echoing that sentiment. If you find yourself in a similar situation, this can be a reasonable first step, once you’ve taken stock of all your debts and assets more accurately. Coleman and Warshaw also reiterated their hope that Cathy learned a lesson from this experience. In her next relationship, she needs to keep everything above board and talk through all financial decisions, Warshaw insisted: “And anything you have questions about, you’re saying out loud. You have something to bring to the table, he has something to bring to the table. No one gets to just ‘handle it.’” With any luck, Cathy will never end up in a situation where she sits back and doesn’t keep tabs on her finances. This would mean getting acquainted with the five pillars of financial literacy, being involved in any financial planning, budgeting, contributing to an emergency fund, and planning for retirement, among other things. In a 2024 Fidelity survey, more than 25% of partners resent being left out of financial decisions. So be vocal and set the guardrails early on for what you expect of your partner, when it comes to financial decisions. Being equal partners on all things finance-related could help avoid not just a situation like the one Cathy got into, but marital conflict more broadly. 22. Five dead after tornado tears through St Louis Five dead after tornado tears through St Louis At least five people have died and more than 5,000 buildings were damaged after a tornado tore through St Louis in Missouri. The tornado swept along a major road, tearing roofs off houses, uprooting trees and knocking down power lines on Friday evening. About 100,000 properties were left without power and the fire department said house-by-house searches were conducted in the worst-affected areas. The US National Weather Service reported at least six other tornadoes in Missouri and neighbouring Illinois, with more severe weather conditions stretching eastwards to the Atlantic coast. [Reuters] National Weather Service radar suggested the tornado touched down shortly after 14:30 local time in the west of the city close to Forest Park – home to St Louis Zoo and the site of the 1904 Olympic Games. St Louis Fire Department said three people had to be rescued after part of the nearby Centennial Christian Church collapsed. One of those people died. A curfew was imposed from 21:00 to 06:00 local time in the two areas where most of the damage took place, to prevent injuries from debris and reduce the potential for looting. St Louis Mayor Cara Spencer said: “Our city is grieving tonight. The loss of life and the destruction is truly, truly horrendous. “We’re going to have a lot of work to do in the coming days. There is no doubt there, but tonight we are focused on saving lives and keeping people safe and allowing our community to grieve.” [Reuters] Source link #dead #tornado #tears #Louis Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  23. Grok’s ‘white genocide’ responses show gen AI tampered with ‘at will’ Grok’s ‘white genocide’ responses show gen AI tampered with ‘at will’ Muhammed Selim Korkutata | Anadolu | Getty Images In the two-plus years since generative artificial intelligence took the the world by storm following the public release of ChatGPT, trust has been a perpetual problem. Hallucinations, bad math and cultural biases have plagued results, reminding users that there’s a limit to how much we can rely on AI, at least for now. Elon Musk’s Grok chatbot, created by his startup xAI, showed this week that there’s a deeper reason for concern: The AI can be easily manipulated by humans. Grok on Wednesday began responding to user queries with false claims of “white genocide” in South Africa. By late in the day, screenshots were posted across X of similar answers even when the questions had nothing to do with the topic. After remaining silent on the matter for well over 24 hours, xAI said late Thursday that Grok’s strange behavior was caused by an “unauthorized modification” to the chat app’s so-called system prompts, which help inform the way it behaves and interacts with users. In other words, humans were dictating the AI’s response. The nature of the response, in this case, ties directly to Musk, who was born and raised in South Africa. Musk, who owns xAI in addition to his CEO roles at Tesla and SpaceX, has been promoting the false claim that violence against some South African farmers constitutes “white genocide,” a sentiment that President Donald Trump has also expressed. Read more CNBC reporting on AI “I think it is incredibly important because of the content and who leads this company, and the ways in which it suggests or sheds light on kind of the power that these tools have to shape people’s thinking and understanding of the world,” said Deirdre Mulligan, a professor at the University of California at Berkeley and an expert in AI governance. Mulligan characterized the Grok miscue as an “algorithmic breakdown” that “rips apart at the seams” the supposed neutral nature of large language models. She said there’s no reason to see Grok’s malfunction as merely an “exception.” AI-powered chatbots created by Meta, Google and OpenAI aren’t “packaging up” information in a neutral way, but are instead passing data through a “set of filters and values that are built into the system,” Mulligan said. Grok’s breakdown offers a window into how easily any of these systems can be altered to meet an individual or group’s agenda. Representatives from xAI, Google and OpenAI didn’t respond to requests for comment. Meta declined to comment. Different than past problems Grok’s unsanctioned alteration, xAI said in its statement, violated “internal policies and core values.” The company said it would take steps to prevent similar disasters and would publish the app’s system prompts in order to “strengthen your trust in Grok as a truth-seeking AI.” It’s not the first AI blunder to go viral online. A decade ago, Google’s Photo app mislabeled African Americans as gorillas. Last year, Google temporarily paused its Gemini AI image generation feature after admitting it was offering “inaccuracies” in historical pictures. And OpenAI’s DALL-E image generator was accused by some users of showing signs of bias in 2022, leading the company to announce that it was implementing a new technique so images “accurately reflect the diversity of the world’s population.” In 2023, 58% of AI decision makers at companies in Australia, the U.K. and the U.S. expressed concern over the risk of hallucinations in a generative AI deployment, Forrester found. The survey in September of that year included 258 respondents. Experts told CNBC that the Grok incident is reminiscent of China’s DeepSeek, which became an overnight sensation in the U.S. earlier this year due to the quality of its new model and that it was reportedly built at a fraction of the cost of its U.S. rivals. Critics have said that DeepSeek censors topics deemed sensitive to the ******** government. Like China with DeepSeek, Musk appears to be influencing results based on his political views, they say. When xAI debuted Grok in November 2023, Musk said it was meant to have “a bit of wit,” “a rebellious streak” and to answer the “spicy questions” that competitors might dodge. In February, xAI blamed an engineer for changes that suppressed Grok responses to user questions about misinformation, keeping Musk and Trump’s names out of replies. But Grok’s recent obsession with “white genocide” in South Africa is more extreme. Petar Tsankov, CEO of AI model auditing firm LatticeFlow AI, said Grok’s blowup is more surprising than what we saw with DeepSeek because one would “kind of expect that there would be some kind of manipulation from China.” Tsankov, whose company is based in Switzerland, said the industry needs more transparency so users can better understand how companies build and train their models and how that influences behavior. He noted efforts by the EU to require more tech companies to provide transparency as part of broader regulations in the region. Without a public outcry, “we will never get to deploy safer models,” Tsankov said, and it will be “people who will be paying the price” for putting their trust in the companies developing them. Mike Gualtieri, an analyst at Forrester, said the Grok debacle isn’t likely to slow user growth for chatbots, or diminish the investments that companies are pouring into the technology. He said users have a certain level of acceptance for these sorts of occurrences. “Whether it’s Grok, ChatGPT or Gemini — everyone expects it now,” Gualtieri said. “They’ve been told how the models hallucinate. There’s an expectation this will happen.” Olivia Gambelin, AI ethicist and author of the book Responsible AI, published last year, said that while this type of activity from Grok may not be surprising, it underscores a fundamental flaw in AI models. Gambelin said it “shows it’s possible, at least with Grok models, to adjust these general purpose foundational models at will.” — CNBC’s Lora Kolodny and Salvador Rodriguez contributed to this report WATCH: Elon Musk’s xAI chatbot Grok brings up South African ‘white genocide’ claims. 24. Here’s how Pokémon Scarlet & Violet’s visuals compare on Switch 2 vs. Switch 1 Here’s how Pokémon Scarlet & Violet’s visuals compare on Switch 2 vs. Switch 1 The first Switch vs Switch 2 screenshots for Pokémon Scarlet & Violet have been published, after fans compared areas shown in this week’s official media drop. On Friday, Nintendo confirmed the list of games getting free Switch 2 updates when the console releases on June 5. Much to the delight of fans, the list includes Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, a game that received much criticism for its visuals and performance when it released in 2022. According to Nintendo, Scarlet and Violet’s visuals have been “optimised for the Nintendo Switch 2 display and high-resolution TVs for improved image quality,” with an improved frame rate. Now, Italian site PokéNext has posted direct comparison shots, alongside the officially released Nintendo Switch 2 screens, so players can see the difference for themselves: Other Switch titles receiving free updates for Switch 2 include Super Mario Odyssey, Arms, Captain Toad, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, and more. Some games will only be getting the addition of GameShare support, a new feature which means that players with multiple Switch consoles (be that Switch or Switch 2) will be able to play multiplayer with only one copy of the game. Others will be getting resolution boosts, frame rate upgrades, HDR support, or a combination of all three. Nintendo has not stated that these are the only games in its existing library to get free Switch 2 updates, so it’s possible that more will follow.
