  1. Happy Plappy! Aussie star solos to glory at the Giro Happy Plappy! Aussie star solos to glory at the Giro Six-time *********** champion Luke Plapp has gone it alone to deliver a solo cycling masterpiece and blast to an outstanding maiden Grand Tour triumph on the eighth stage of the Giro d’Italia. The 24-year-old from Melbourne made his decisive attack on the 197km mountainous route from Giulianova with 46km still left to left to go to the finish in Castelraimondo on Saturday. Yet his power and huge engine enabled him to leave his fellow breakaway riders in the dust on a steep climb before he negotiated more ascents to go on and earn his first ever WorldTour win. “It’s crazy,” said “Plappy”, the rider from *********** team Jayco AlUla, putting his hands to his head in almost disbelief as he crossed the line following almost four and three-quarter hours in the saddle to win by 38 seconds. He was the second *********** winner on the 108th edition of the Giro, two days after Kaden Groves sprinted to victory on stage six in Naples. It also represented a wonderful comeback for Plapp, three times a winner of the *********** road race and a triple national time trial champion, after a disrupted 2025 campaign when he had to undergo surgery on his injured wrist. He had also crashed on just the second stage of the Giro in Albania when he had been flying on his time trial route. Wilco Kelderman of Visma-Lease a Bike was second while XDS-Astana’s Italian hope Diego Ulissi came in third to take the overall leader’s pink jersey from Juan Ayuso. It left the Italian screaming in delight at earning the top prize in his nation’s biggest race when he was told the “Maglia Rosa” was his. 2. Marvel Rivals Fans Acknowledge Why Punisher Insta-Locking Is So Much Fun Marvel Rivals Fans Acknowledge Why Punisher Insta-Locking Is So Much Fun Boasting a unique skillset in Marvel Rivals is something that almost every hero featured in the game can flex. The only character exempt from it is our favorite mentally unstable anti-hero, Frank Castle a.k.a. The Punisher. Not dissing the guy, but his abilities aren’t anything special when compared to other DPS. Punisher is often considered a brain-dead character in the Marvel Rivals community, thanks to his overly simplistic skillset. But players have come to realise that sometimes, less is more. While his abilities might not be all that, they’re easy to master, which makes him all the more fun to play with. Marvel Rivals players have understood why Punisher is the ultimate judge, jury, and executioner Players on the Marvel Rivals subreddit have finally seen the light emanating through Punisher’s smoke bombs as they acknowledge why he’s so fun to insta-lock. He puts the ‘shooter’ in ‘hero-shooter’ as he’s nothing more than an insane guy with a gun, but that’s all you need to win a battle. Read the post below and you’ll understand the sudden shift in perception. His kit consists of his default assault rifle (which can turn into a shotgun), a smoke bomb, a frustratingly good turret, and a zip line to compensate for his abysmal traversal. His assault rifle is terrific at long-range, with the option to switch to the powerful shotgun when you’re face-to-face with an enemy, which is convenient. Movement isn’t Punisher’s strongest suit, but the zip line is serviceable enough, and on the other hand, his smoke bomb works as a quick retreat from the heat of battle. However, his turret is his best ability purely for the fact that you can set it down nearly anywhere and just start spraying at enemy clusters. It feels almost as if you’re playing a classic Doom game. Punisher’s ult, while making him squishy and easy to kill, deals enough damage to deliver an ace. The subreddit is now praising Punisher, calling him a guilty pleasure, and you can see that from the reactions below: Comment byu/TreeTurtle_852 from discussion inmarvelrivals Comment byu/TreeTurtle_852 from discussion inmarvelrivals Comment byu/TreeTurtle_852 from discussion inmarvelrivals Comment byu/TreeTurtle_852 from discussion inmarvelrivals Overall, his kit is generic, but it packs a punch and provides a great time for players just looking to shoot at things, much like Punisher himself. Plus, being a Punisher main gets you more respect than a Scarlet Witch main in Marvel Rivals because, unlike Wanda, you have to aim with Frank to deal damage. Punisher transforms into a Japanese legend with his new skin in Marvel Rivals Punisher stuns in a Japanese-style armor in Marvel Rivals | Image Credit: NetEase Games It’s been a great week for DPS mains in Marvel Rivals as Punisher received probably his best skin yet. Designed by legendary artist Peach Momoko, the hero sports a Japanese-style bulky armor with a beautiful skull logo on it. One of the best skins in the game, made even better since it’s his first legendary skin, which means that the bundle includes an animated nameplate, an emote, a spray, and a gorgeous MVP animation. It’s good to see him get some love after getting ignored in the cosmetics department for so long. Players finally opening their eyes to Punisher’s greatness should definitely consider buying this skin, as it’s time he got some love from the community, too. So, what do you think about players shedding a positive light on Punisher in? Do you agree with the sentiment? Or do you prefer other DPS heroes? 3. Webb discovers a distant moon has an intriguing similarity to Earth Webb discovers a distant moon has an intriguing similarity to Earth Scientists have had a hunch that a distant moon experiences weather like Earth’s, forming clouds that douse its craggy surface with rain. If that’s the case, it would make Titan the only other world in the solar system that has that in common with our home planet. Now researchers have one more clue that Titan, the largest of 274 known Saturn moons, has a climate cycle similar to what occurs on Earth. The catch: Instead of evaporating and filling Titan’s lakes and oceans with water, it’s likely showering the moon with cold, oily methane. Using two powerful telescopes — the James Webb Space Telescope and the Keck II telescope in Hawaii — astronomers watched clouds emerge and then climb higher in the sky over Titan, which is about 880 million miles away in space. For the first time, they saw clouds hovering in the north, where most of the moon’s lakes and seas exist, at the tail end of its summer. The discovery of cloud convection bolsters the theory that these bodies of surface liquid, comparable in size to the Great Lakes in the United States, are getting replenished through rain, perhaps like how summer storms work on Earth. The team’s research appears in the journal Nature Astronomy. “We were able to see methane clouds evolving and changing close to Titan’s north pole over multiple days, in the region where large seas and lakes of methane were discovered by the Cassini spacecraft,” said Conor Nixon, a NASA research scientist and the paper’s lead author, in a statement. SEE ALSO: NASA rover captures an aurora from Mars surface for the first time Imagining dust storms on distant moon Titan Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, is brutally cold and shrouded in a jaundiced smog. Credit: NASA / ESA / IPGP / Labex UnivEarthS / University Paris Diderot illustration Titan is a strange world, at -300 degrees Fahrenheit, and shrouded in a jaundiced smog. Similar to Earth, the atmosphere is mostly nitrogen. Scientists are interested in Titan because, despite its brutally cold temperatures, it appears to have the organic ingredients for life — the kinds that humans know about, at least. Whether the moon harbors any microbial aliens has become a top exploration priority, helping to spur NASA’s $3.35 billion Dragonfly. The mission just passed its critical design review, a milestone that means engineers can begin constructing the spacecraft. The helicopter-like robot is expected to visit the moon in the 2030s. The new Webb observations show that during summer in Titan’s northern hemisphere, clouds can rise higher and may be fueled by heat from the sun — sort of like Earth storms. Scientists had seen this kind of cloud activity before, but never in the north. That’s key because it suggests the northern methane and ethane seas are part of a process that maintains Titan’s atmosphere. On Earth, those chemicals are gases, but on freezing Titan, they are liquid like gasoline on Earth. An artist’s rendering of the Dragonfly spacecraft The Dragonfly mission has advanced to the stage when engineers can begin constructing the helicopter-like spacecraft. Credit: NASA / Johns Hopkins APL / Steve Gribben illustration By using different kinds of light filters, the two telescopes helped astronomers determine how high the clouds were drifting. On Earth, the lowest part of the sky — the troposphere — goes up about 7.5 miles, but that same layer on Titan soars up to 28 miles, thanks to the moon’s lower gravity. Webb found something else new: a tiny, fast-moving molecule, called the methyl radical, in Titan’s atmosphere. This molecule is ephemeral, so its detection indicates that chemical reactions are ongoing in the moon’s skies. Similar molecules are associated with the chemical origins of life on Earth. “It’s possible that (methane) is being constantly resupplied and fizzing out of the crust and interior over billions of years,” Nixon said. “If not, eventually it will all be gone, and Titan will become a mostly airless world of dust and dunes.” Webb and Keck telescopes study Saturn’s moon Titan The two telescopes, Webb and Keck II, helped astronomers determine how high the clouds were drifting. Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA / STScI / Keck Observatory Though the discovered rising clouds suggest it could rain on Titan, no precipitation was actually observed. The team is planning follow-up studies to see how the weather patterns change, especially in the ******* after the equinox this month. Over time, the methane in Titan’s air could vanish if it isn’t being replaced somehow from within the moon. If that happens, Titan could lose its atmosphere and become something more akin to Mars. “For the first time we can see the chemical cake while it’s rising in the oven,” said coauthor Stefanie Milam in a statement, “instead of just the starting ingredients of flour and sugar, and then the final, iced cake.” Source link #Webb #discovers #distant #moon #intriguing #similarity #Earth Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Listen to the latest episode of “Quick Start” The “Real Time” host said during a closing monologue on his show Friday that some within the party seem more interested in touting the ************ cause than they are in the interests of America, according to Fox News. “Here is the dilemma for Democrats — their young people, their key constituency — not only don’t like their own civilization; they like the wrong one,” Maher said. “They actually think ****** is a liberation movement, they chant for the Houthis, they’re chanting ‘We will honor our martyrs’ at Yale. They’re looking for love in all the wrong countries.” The comedian said it’s essential Democrats start telling young people America isn’t the place where women lack rights and where religious liberty is non-existent. He also offered a warning to liberals if they don’t get these issues in check. “If the thought leaders in the Democratic Party keep encouraging and not rebuking that America is cringe and the people who run Gaza are great, the Democrats are doomed,” Maher proclaimed. Liberals are weak and woke, especially the white ones, and they indulge all sorts of nonsense from their kids.” He said the “gender stuff” in the last election — including the notion “men can have babies and stuff” — are part of the same problems that have plagued the Democratic Party. Maher said he has a “fear” surrounding how young people and others are processing terror and related issues, and encouraged parents to become proactive in correcting the wrongs being bred in young minds. “Now, I fear that, ‘We like the terrorists’ is the new ‘that,’” he said. “Liberals need to push back on the dumb ideas that come from their children. The Democrats’ problem is the energy of the party’s with the young, and the younger with the terrorists; that’s not good.” Maher continued, “So talk to your children and remind them you don’t really want to live like your heroes in ******.” He also reminded young people “everything they do was made in America,” citing smartphones, delivery services, and all of the luxuries they enjoy in the modern era. “You couldn’t survive a week living in Intifadaville,” Maher concluded. 11. More Than One in 20 Women Need Second Abortion After Termination Pill Fails More Than One in 20 Women Need Second Abortion After Termination Pill Fails More than one in 20 women undergo secondary abortions after the abortion pills they initially ingest fail, according to just-published analysis. The new study from the Ethics and Public Policy Center, which CBN News has previously reported on, found more than 5% of women had to pursue a repeat abortion within 45 days of taking mifepristone, the leading abortion-inducing pill. The data came from an analysis of insurance claims from 865,727 mifepristone abortions between 2017 and 2023. Listen to the latest episode of “Quick Start” A total of 45,498 women needed a second abortion after the pill failed to terminate their pregnancies. Of those women, 24,563 pursued a surgical abortion and close to 7,000 underwent a second round of medication and surgical terminations. This new information comes on the heels of another study that found more than one in 10 women faced “serious adverse event” after taking mifepristone in 2023. That analysis, commissioned by the Foundation for the Restoration of America, revealed about 11.2% of women suffered critical health complications, which could include hemorrhaging, the need for blood transfusions, emergency room visits, or sepsis. The EPPC study showed similar results, which are about 22 times higher than what the U.S. Food and Drug Administration listed on its label for the brand name Mifeprex in 2023. Ryan Anderson and Jamie Bryan Hall, the authors behind the EPPC research, are urging the FDA “to reinstate earlier, stronger patient safety protocols and reconsider its approval of mifepristone altogether” because “women deserve better than the abortion pill.” “Simply stated, mifepristone, as used in real-world conditions, is not ‘safe and effective,’” they added. This issue is important given the number of women who have pursued self-managed abortions via the pill has risen significantly since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that gave nationwide legal cover for abortion. Medication-induced abortions are also generally more common than surgical procedures. According to the Guttmacher Institute, pill-based abortions made up 63% of all abortions in 2023, up from 31% in 2014. The FDA first approved mifepristone in 2000. 12. Tariffs are falling more quickly than Wall Street expected Tariffs are falling more quickly than Wall Street expected This is The Takeaway from today’s Morning Brief, which you can sign up to receive in your inbox every morning along with: Tariffs remain the story of the stock market right now. Early Monday morning, a 90-day tariff pause between the US and China set the tone for the week in markets. The S&P 500 (^GSPC) closed the week up around 5%, while the Nasdaq Composite rallied around 7%. Both major indexes are now higher than they were before Trump escalated the trade war by pushing tariffs to their highest level in a century. And as our Chart of the Week shows, the US effective tariff rate has been moving lower over the past month as stocks have rallied. At 14.4%, the effective US tariff rate is nearly back to its pre-“Liberation Day” level too. So perhaps, taken at that simplistic level, it makes sense that stocks have soared so much in the past month, given that the headwind that sent markets lower has eased significantly. But in markets, the news isn’t just about what’s said. It’s also about how what was said matches investor expectations. On April 2, tariffs negatively surprised as Trump’s announcements were, as we wrote at the time, “worse than expected.” Well, the latest round of tariff announcements brought up a counter phrase: “Better than feared.” In a note to clients on May 9, the day before trade negotiations between the US and China were set to begin, JPMorgan chief US economist Michael Feroli estimated tariffs on ******** goods could fall to “at least near 60% for now.” This would’ve lowered Feroli’s estimated effective tariff rate to 17%. Instead, a 30% tariff rate pushed Feroli’s overall tariff estimate down to the 14.4% seen in our chart. This was enough for Feroli to no longer call for a recession in the US this year. Since tariffs are like a tax on the consumer, Feroli reasoned the tariff rollback was equivalent to a $300 billion “tax cut” for Americans. “The rolling back of this tax should provide some relief to consumer spending, and in our modeling is enough to tip the second-half growth outlook from one of modest contraction to one of modest growth,” Feroli wrote. Goldman Sachs had expected China tariffs to land around 54%. Again, they came in better than expected. For the equity strategy team at Goldman Sachs, this was a key contributing factor in boosting the year-end S&P 500 target from 5,900 to 6,100. Goldman also holds a 12-month target of 6,500. When a Reddit user shared their experience in a post on r/RealEstate, it quickly drew attention from thousands of homeowners. The post, titled “Manipulative Buyers Got Greedy and Lost a Great House,” detailed how a potential ***** went off the rails thanks to overreaching repair demands and questionable tactics. “I’m all about negotiating,” the seller wrote, “but when someone tries to manipulate negotiations to get more money out of the other party, that is bad business.” Don’t Miss: ‘We just wanted to sell the house’ The seller used the same agent they had worked with to buy the home. But while she was a great buyer’s agent, she didn’t measure up on the selling side. “She did zero negotiating with the buyers’ agent, even tried talking us into the buyers’ terms on their first offer,” the Redditor wrote. The home was listed at the low end of its appraised value to reflect the slower fall market. It got attention quickly, including a second showing from a couple who brought both sets of their parents. “All 4 parents were at the second showing, and all 4 were at the inspections, apparently following the home inspector around, questioning a lot of things,” the seller said. “The inspection report even included pics of ‘findings’ that had one of the parents in the pics.” The seller agreed to a contract with minor concessions but was caught off guard by an inspection addendum that included up to $2,000 in septic and well repairs, which hadn’t been discussed. Despite this, they signed, thinking the house, which was in great shape, would pass smoothly. Then things escalated. Trending: Hasbro, MGM, and Skechers trust this AI marketing firm — Invest at $0.60/share before it’s too late. $40,000 in repair requests A few days after the inspection, the seller’s Ring camera showed a truck pulling into the driveway. “Three guys get out and put a ladder on my roof and start climbing,” the post read. No appointment had been made. The seller called their agent, who was unaware of the visit. Story Continues Turns out, the buyers had sent friends to get quotes for repairs. The result? A $40,000 repair request, including $25,000 for a new roof that wasn’t flagged in the inspection report. Their friends claimed the roof had only two years left. “I had a roofer come out and look at it and he said at least 10 more years life left, and a current replacement would be about $12.5k,” the seller said. The sellers stood firm. No credits. No repairs. Not even $5,000 when the buyers’ agent asked. The buyers canceled the contract. The seller pulled the home from the market and fired their agent. They asked if the home was still for ***** and offered to buy it without agents involved. The two parties worked through a real estate attorney, handled inspections properly, and closed the deal. The seller not only avoided paying agent commissions but also made more money than if they’d accepted the earlier offer. “Everything went smoothly with no shady business,” they wrote. “Sometimes when one door closes, a ******* door opens.” They added, “We gave [the new buyer] $20k off the market value since we weren’t using realtors. New roof: $12.5k. Cost savings to buyer by not using a realtor: $20k. And I even repaired a lot of the things called out in the first home inspection.” “There is negotiating the best price, and then there is insulting sellers with manipulative tactics,” the poster concluded. 17. How To Hibernate your Linux computer: Unlike sleep, it uses no battery How To Hibernate your Linux computer: Unlike sleep, it uses no battery Hibernation is a power-saving measure where a laptop or desktop has the current state is saved to a hard drive (or more likely one of the best SSDs). Powering on the computer will trigger it to load the state and get us back to work. That would’ve been the case for Editor-in-Chief Avram Piltch, who has undertaken a week with Linux and hit an issue. The Issue? It seems that hibernation is not enabled by default. We can close the lid on our laptop, but it doesn’t power down, merely waiting for Avram to open the laptop lid for more work, or for its battery to drain down to zero after several hours or days of sleep mode. The latter is what happened to Avram and that is what triggered the creation of this how to. The problem that we will solve is triggering hibernation on a laptop running Ubuntu. This will either be via the power menu, or by closing the laptop lid. To do that we need to first create a swap image, then test that we can hibernate the machine. You may like Before progressing any further, ensure that you have up-to-date backups. With projects like this there is always a slight risk of data loss, and you should take all the necessary precautions before attempting. Creating a Swap Image and Testing Hibernation The swap image is where the OS will store the current state of the system. It will dump the contents of RAM to the image, and then use that image to store the state until we power on the laptop. The size of the swap image will be the same as the amount of installed RAM. So let’s get started! 1. Open a terminal and check how much RAM is in your machine using the “free” command. We should already know this, but this is a “belt and braces” step to be certain. By default, free will show the RAM in Kilobytes, passing -m will show it in Megabytes. This will also show any swapfiles / images that are in use. Take extra care with commands using this power. sudo su 6. Using dd, create a swap.img file in the root directory. Note that we are creating an 8GB swap image (count=8192), but this should be changed to match the RAM installed in your machine. So for 16GB it would be 16384, 32GB, 32768. dd if=/dev/zero of=/swap.img count=8192 bs=1MiB 7. Set the permissions of the swap.img file so that it can be read and written by the owner (6), but not by groups (0) or by others (0). chmod 600 /swap.img 8. It should look like the image for this step. resume=UUID=YOUR UUID HERE resume_offset=YOUR OFFSET HERE” (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) 18. Close the grub file by pressing CTRL+X, then Y and Enter. 19. Update the grub file for the changes to take effect. update-grub 20. Reboot your computer. reboot 21. Log back into your computer and in a new terminal check that the cmdline changes have stuck. cat /proc/cmdline 22. In the terminal check that hibernation is now enabled on your system. Note, if it is, then the system will power down. Save any work before trying this. sudo systemctl hibernate (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) We can now hibernate the system from the terminal, but this isn’t very useful, so now we move on to triggering hibernation via the power menu and when the laptop lid is closed. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) From the standard power menu (top right of the desktop) we have a quick means to power off, reboot or log out of the laptop, but there isn’t an option for hibernation. In this section we will add that feature and then test that it works. 1. Open a terminal and run the following command to create a new file which contains the hibernation rules. sudo nano /etc/polkit-1/rules.d/10-enable-hibernate.rules 2. Copy the following text and paste into nano by pressing SHIFT + CTRL + V. polkit.addRule(function(action, subject) { if (action.id == "org.freedesktop.login1.hibernate" || action.id == "org.freedesktop.login1.hibernate-multiple-sessions" || action.id == "org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate" || action.id == "org.freedesktop.login1.handle-hibernate-key" || action.id == "org.freedesktop.login1.hibernate-ignore-inhibit") { return polkit.Result.YES; } }); 3. Save the file and exit by pressing CTRL +X , then Y and Enter. 4. For Ubuntu users (GNOME) you will need to install GNOME Shell, as we need to install a GNOME Shell extension. Open a terminal and enter the following command. sudo apt update sudo apt install chrome-gnome-shell 5. Open this page in a browser and install the GNOME Shell extension. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) 6. Reboot the laptop for the changes to take effect. 7. Log back in and open a few applications. We’ll use this to prove that the hibernation works as expected. 8. Go to the top right menu and click on the icons, then click on the power icon. From the list select Hibernate. The laptop will go into hibernation and the power button / LED may flicker to show that the system is powering down. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) 9. Press the power button to wake the laptop from hibernation. 10. Log back in and you will see that all of the applications are as we left them. How to Suspend then Hibernate (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) In the Power menu you’ve probably noticed options for: Suspend: Puts the system into a low-power mode, saving the current state to RAM. Suspend then Hibernate: This will put your system into a low-power mode, saving the current state to RAM for a pre-determined amount of time. Then the system will hibernate, saving the state to disk. Hibernate: Saving the current state to disk. Hybrid Sleep: Your computer will suspend to disk and to RAM at the same time. Providing you with a fast resume speed (suspend to RAM) but your session is protected should the power run out. Restart: Reboot your computer. Power Off: Powers off your computer. Log Out: Logs the current user out and returns to the login screen. The most interesting entry on this list is Suspend then Hibernate. As mentioned, this has the speed benefit of suspend to RAM, but after a while the system will hibernate and save the state to disk. Useful for when we are moving from the meeting room to office and when we pack up at the end of the day. If you’re not interested in this, then skip to the next section. But if you are, here are the steps to make it work. To use Suspend then Hibernate we need to edit a configuration file. 1. Open a terminal and using sudo, edit the configuration file. sudo nano /etc/systemd/sleep.conf 2. Scroll down the list and remove the # from AllowSuspendThenHibernate. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) 3. Scroll down the list and remove the # from HibernateDelaySec= and add a value after the =. For test purposes I chose 1min, but this should be changed to your requirements, 60min for example. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) 4. Save the file and exit by pressing CTRL +X , then Y and Enter. 5. Reboot the computer and log back in. 6. Open a few applications and then go to the power menu and select Suspend then Hibernate. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) 7. If you followed the one minute setting from step 3, then the computer will suspend to RAM, and then one minute later it will start the hibernation process. Remember to change this value to something relevant to your needs. Hibernating When Closing the Laptop Lid The most convenient way to trigger hibernation is to close the laptop lid. Think about all of the times we finish work, move to the next meeting. We want to shut the lid and move on. The dropdown menu option that we have previously configured is useful, but closing the laptop lid is almost a reflex action. So let’s make it happen! 1. Open a terminal and use this command to create a new directory. sudo mkdir -p /etc/systemd/logind.conf.d 2. Create a configuration file using nano. sudo nano /etc/systemd/logind.conf.d/lid-close-action.conf 3. Copy and paste the text below into nano. Pasting into nano is SHIFT + CTRL + V. [Login] HandleLidSwitch=hibernate HandleLidSwitchExternalPower=ignore HandleLidSwitchDocked=ignore 4. Save the file and exit by pressing CTRL +X , then Y and Enter. 5. Reboot for the changes to be applied. 6. Log in, open a few applications and then close the lid. On my Lenovo X390 I can see the Thinkpad “i” LED flicker as the laptop saves the state. Then it goes off, showing that the laptop has powered down. 7. Give it a few seconds, and then open the laptop lid. The Ubuntu startup process should appear and in a few seconds login. 8. The desktop should be as you left it. Source link #Hibernate #Linux #computer #sleep #battery Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  18. 2025 Kia Carnival GT-Line diesel review 2025 Kia Carnival GT-Line diesel review If you know, you know. Camera Icon2025 Kia Carnival GT-Line diesel Credit: CarExpert For many people, a Kia Carnival is a car you rent on holiday, thoroughly enjoy for its practicality, and then completely rule out buying because – gasp – you can’t buy a people mover! But for those who get past the people mover stigma and purchase one, it proves an invaluable family car. Here’s something that can carry eight people (even adults!) in comfort, and carry a very decent amount of luggage too. Good luck finding an SUV that can do that. Not to mention, the Kia Carnival – particularly in GT-Line diesel trim, as tested here – is a sensational road trip vehicle. Camera Icon2025 Kia Carnival GT-Line diesel Credit: CarExpert People movers never quite reached the heights of popularity here as they did in markets like the US and Europe, but years ago the Carnival took the top spot in the segment and never relinquished it. Last year, it had 74 per cent share of the total people mover market here – a virtually unheard of percentage in our fragmented market. Frankly, the Carnival could be a 20 per cent worse vehicle and it would still be worth recommending, even setting aside the relative scarcity of competition. Fortunately for us, Kia takes the Carnival very seriously. That’s perhaps because of the greater sales volumes people movers enjoy in the US, where the big Kia goes up against rivals from Chrysler, Honda and Toyota. Camera Icon2025 Kia Carnival GT-Line diesel Credit: CarExpert But Australians get to enjoy the spoils of Kia’s continuously evolving people mover, which in 2024 gained a hybrid version. It also received a substantial facelift which, like the Sorento, arguably looks neither better nor worse but now has the new Kia corporate look. In short, Kia didn’t bollocks it up, and the Carnival still has a handsome, vaguely SUV-like look and doesn’t look like a dorky van. How much does the Kia Carnival GT-Line cost? Our tester was a GT-Line diesel, previously the top of the Carnival tent but now the second most expensive member of the lineup following the release of the hybrids including a GT-Line flagship. Camera Icon2025 Kia Carnival GT-Line diesel Credit: CarExpert It wears a price tag of $73,330 before on-road costs, sliding in under the GT-Line hybrid at $76,630 before on-roads. The Carnival lineup was recently expanded – Kia now offers three trim levels with the hybrid powertrain, and you can get the diesel across five trim levels. If you want to save some money upfront – if not at the bowser – you can get the GT-Line with a petrol V6 for $71,100 before on-roads. For context, the related Hyundai Staria tops out at $67,950 before on-roads in diesel-powered Highlander guise, though while it adds all-wheel drive over the Kia it misses out in other areas. More on that later. To see how the Kia Carnival lines up against the competition, check out our comparison tool What is the Kia Carnival GT-Line like on the inside? Like the exterior, the pre-update Carnival’s interior was already quite nice but it has nevertheless been substantially refreshed. Camera Icon2025 Kia Carnival GT-Line diesel Credit: CarExpert Headline changes include a new curved display incorporating a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen running Kia’s latest generation of infotainment system. The infotainment system has attractive graphics, logical menu structures, and wireless smartphone connectivity. Likewise, the instrument cluster is also attractive and intuitive, though there’s still no map view. There’s still far too much gloss ****** trim in the front of the cabin, which will be covered in smudges and dust quickly. Camera Icon2025 Kia Carnival GT-Line diesel Credit: CarExpertCamera Icon2025 Kia Carnival GT-Line diesel Credit: CarExpert That said, the strip of gloss ****** trim running across the very top of the dash is an attractive design detail, while other visually appealing elements include the intricately patterned speaker grilles, ambient lighting, and backlit graphics on the driver’s door. The new climate control/media array, previously seen in models like the Kia Sportage, is a clever way to minimise dashboard clutter without burying functions in a touchscreen menu. It features a pair of knobs plus various touch-capacitive switches which control either the HVAC settings or, with the press of a button, media settings. You peer out over a surprisingly long bonnet for a people mover. Visibility out the back is already decent, but it’s aided by the inclusion of a digital rear-view mirror. Camera Icon2025 Kia Carnival GT-Line diesel Credit: CarExpert There’s also a surround-view camera, and it boasts impressive resolution and a trick 3D view. You therefore shouldn’t have any difficulties parking this big people mover. Storage could be better. The front doors don’t have large bottle holders at all, while the centre console has a small shelf underneath on the passenger side but not the kind of open, expansive shelf you’ll find in many of today’s SUVs. However, there’s a decently sized shelf atop the console with a wireless phone charger, plus a fairly deep, square-shaped bin. I took a previous-generation, top-spec Carnival on a road trip a few years ago and found the driver’s seat absolutely abysmal, leaving my back in pain after the long drive – an issue I virtually never have with cars. Camera Icon2025 Kia Carnival GT-Line diesel Credit: CarExpert The new-generation Carnival’s seats are more comfortable, and my back felt okay after an almost identical drive. Still, they’re firm, flat and unsupportive, which detracts from the Carnival’s otherwise impressive road trip credentials. You and your seven passengers will be able to enjoy some carpool karaoke – hopefully without James Corden – thanks to the 12-speaker Bose sound system. Bose may not be the gold standard in sound systems, but this sound system is pretty damn good. Getting into the back of the Carnival is easy thanks to power sliding doors, which can also be operated using the key fob. The second row is exceptionally roomy, and is full of amenities including cupholders at the rear of the centre console; USB-C outlets in the front seatbacks; and climate controls on the driver’s side. Camera Icon2025 Kia Carnival GT-Line diesel Credit: CarExpert There are also controls on the front passenger seatback allowing second-row occupants to move it to free up more space, while each individual second-row seat can slide and recline. A second sunroof bathes the second row (and, to a lesser extend, the third row) in light, and can be opened or concealed with a sunshade. The centre seat folds down to reveal a flat surface perfect for games, and another couple of cup holders (there are nine in the cabin in total). The air vents for the second and third rows can be found in the ceiling. Camera Icon2025 Kia Carnival GT-Line diesel Credit: CarExpert It’s easy to get into the third row, as the second-row seats tilt and slide with the push of a button. The third row can actually comfortably fit adults, something many large SUVs can’t boast. Unlike the Staria, you get ISOFIX child-seat anchor points for all second-row seats instead of just the outboard ones, while there are also top-tether and ISOFIX anchor points in the third row. That makes the Carnival a much more desirable option for people-mover buyers with young children. Also making the Carnival more desirable is the superior cargo space. Open the (power-assisted) tailgate and there’s a deep well behind the rearmost seats. Camera Icon2025 Kia Carnival GT-Line diesel Credit: CarExpertCamera Icon2025 Kia Carnival GT-Line diesel Credit: CarExpert There’s a whopping 627L of boot space, and flat-folding the third-row seats – which you can do one-handed – ups that to an enormous 2827L. The second-row seats don’t fold into the floor, however. Unlike the hybrid, you do get a spare wheel in the GT-Line diesel albeit one of the space-saver variety. To see how the Kia Carnival lines up against the competition, check out our comparison tool What’s under the bonnet? On a drive from Blackbutt in regional Queensland back to Brisbane, we observed fuel consumption of just 6.5L/100km. Not bad for a big bus! Camera Icon2025 Kia Carnival GT-Line diesel Credit: CarExpert The Carnival has the same 2000kg braked towing capacity with either a petrol or diesel engine. This is twice as much as the hybrid, which can tow only 1000kg. To see how the Kia Carnival lines up against the competition, check out our comparison tool How does the Kia Carnival drive? The Carnival GT-Line diesel is a fabulous road trip companion. Camera Icon2025 Kia Carnival GT-Line diesel Credit: CarExpert It provides a fantastically well-sorted ride, which ironed out some patchy, cracked and just generally ******* surfaces in urban and rural Queensland. You barely feel a thing, and yet the Carnival feels nicely tied down as well with great body control and an absence of float. Tyre roar can make the cabin a bit boomy on coarser-chip surfaces, but otherwise the Carnival is quite refined. Kia engineers have employed enough sound-proofing to drown out much of the clatter inherent with a turbo-diesel four-cylinder, leaving a rather muted engine note. We didn’t whip out the decibel meter, but our impression is the Carnival is even quieter than a Hyundai Palisade with the same powertrain. Camera Icon2025 Kia Carnival GT-Line diesel Credit: CarExpert You still enjoy the benefits of a turbo-diesel engine, chiefly an abundance of low-end grunt. The eight-speed torque-converter auto – as opposed to the eight-speed dual-clutch used in the related Sorento diesel – shifts smoothly, quickly and unobtrusively. There are paddles, but we never felt any need to use them, nor did we bother with Sport mode. The steering is light, which in a car like this is probably wise. It makes it easy to steer this around a carpark, but on a winding road it does make the car feel a bit harder to place and therefore more cumbersome. Those who despise automatic stop/start systems will be delighted to find the Carnival doesn’t have one, so you will hear the faint sound of the diesel engine clattering away while you wait in the school pickup line. Camera Icon2025 Kia Carnival GT-Line diesel Credit: CarExpert The safety systems are a mixed bag, but Hyundai Motor Group is ahead of many rivals with the suite of technology it offers. For example, instead of simply sounding an alarm, the blind-spot and rear cross-traffic systems can actually intervene to help save you from a collision, while the Blind-Spot View Monitor projects camera footage of your blind spot onto the instrument cluster. There’s also Highway Driving Assist 2, which can perform automated lane changes. This is a bit more gimmicky, as if it detects too much steering input the system spits the ****** and cancels… but then if it detects you don’t have your hands on the steering wheel it does the same thing. The lane-keep assist is intrusive and feels a bit like 10-pin bowling with the bumpers up. Yes, it’s very good at detecting lane markings, but it’s domineering. Camera Icon2025 Kia Carnival GT-Line diesel Credit: CarExpert On narrower or more winding roads I found myself turning it off – something easily done with the press of a button on the steering wheel. The emergency steering assist, however, only interfered once, gently activating on a bend in the road with cars on both side. There’s a radar-based rear occupant alert which went off as it was supposed to when I left somebody – an adult, I hasten to add – in the car while I ducked into the shops. It works as follows. You get an alert as you exit the vehicle to check the rear seats, and then if any movement is detected after the driver’s door is closed and all doors are locked the ***** will sound for 25 seconds. Camera Icon2025 Kia Carnival GT-Line diesel Credit: CarExpert Given the number of tragic, avoidable deaths that have occurred when children and pets have been left in a hot car, this is a welcome feature. One feature we can do without is the overspeed alert that chimes not only when you exceed the speed limit, but even when you simply enter a new speed zone. It defaults to on, too, which is frustrting. To see how the Kia Carnival lines up against the competition, check out our comparison tool What do you get? Camera Icon2025 Kia Carnival GT-Line diesel Credit: CarExpert The diesel and petrol Carnivals’ service intervals are longer than those of the hybrids, which must be serviced every 12 months or 10,000km. To see how the Kia Carnival lines up against the competition, check out our comparison tool CarExpert’s Take on the Kia Carnival If you’re looking for a vehicle that can seat eight people and lug a decent amount of luggage, then ignore the Kia Carnival at your peril. Camera Icon2025 Kia Carnival GT-Line diesel Credit: CarExpert Yes, SUVs are the trendier choice, but at the risk of shouting into a void here (or preaching to the choir), the Carnival is a far superior option unless you absolutely need all-wheel drive and decent ground clearance. The related Hyundai Staria can get you the former if not the latter, though you trade the handsome, quasi-upscale styling of the Carnival for something that – for better or worse – looks like a shuttlecraft out of Star Trek. It can’t match the child- and luggage-hauling capabilities of the Kia, while almost everything else in the people mover segment looks and feels like a van with seats. Diesels may be falling out of favour, but the lower upfront cost than the hybrid and the superior driveability over the petrol versions make this a no-brainer. If the GT-Line is too extravagant for you, save the $4000 and get the still quite comprehensively equipped GT-Line Lite. You’ll still be able to smile smugly at other families at your kids’ cricket match, as they try to wedge gear and people into their less practical SUVs. 19. FDA flags hidden contaminants in popular bottled water brands — here’s what it uncovered FDA flags hidden contaminants in popular bottled water brands — here’s what it uncovered Ten bottled water samples tested by the Food and Drug Administration held detectable levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, though none exceeded maximum contamination levels for drinking water, Quality Assurance & Food Safety magazine reported. What’s happening? The FDA analyzed 197 bottled water samples from retail locations across the United States in 2023 and 2024. This testing included various types of water: purified, artesian, spring, and mineral. Of the samples that showed PFAS, eight were domestic products (purified or spring water) that contained one to four PFAS. The remaining two were imported artesian waters that contained one or two PFAS. The agency tested for 18 PFAS, including six for which the Environmental Protection Agency has established maximum contamination levels in public drinking water. Four detected PFAS were below these limits, while two don’t have established limits. This marks a change from previous FDA testing in 2016 and through the Total Diet Study, which didn’t detect any PFAS in bottled water samples. Why are PFAS concerning? These chemicals are called “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down in the environment or your body. PFAS exposure has been linked to serious health issues, including increased ******* risk, reduced immune function, and developmental problems. Watch now: Giant snails invading New York City? You can absorb PFAS through drinking water, food, and even household products that contain these chemicals. When they enter your body, they can build up over time. For families who rely on bottled water as a safer alternative to tap water, this finding creates new questions about which water sources can be trusted. PFAS contamination has created environmental justice issues in communities where water supplies have been contaminated by industrial facilities that produced or used these chemicals. What’s being done about PFAS? The FDA says it continues to analyze bottled water and other foods for PFAS to understand exposure to these chemicals from food sources. When the EPA establishes maximum contamination levels for public drinking water, the FDA must create similar standards for bottled water or determine that such regulation isn’t necessary. You can reduce your PFAS exposure by researching bottled water brands and looking for those that publish water quality reports that show PFAS testing results. At home, filters certified to remove PFAS can help. Look for the NSF P473 certification when shopping. Some companies proactively test for and remove PFAS from their products, responding to growing consumer awareness about these chemicals and their health effects. 25. Analysis-Istanbul peace talks laid bare chasm between Ukraine and Russia Analysis-Istanbul peace talks laid bare chasm between Ukraine and Russia By Tom Balmforth ISTANBUL (Reuters) -The first high-level talks between Russia and Ukraine since the early months of Moscow’s 2022 invasion showed they are far from agreement on steps needed for a ceasefire, even though they promised a major swap of prisoners of war. A window for more diplomacy remains ajar, however, after the sworn enemies agreed in principle to hold further talks, the foreign minister of host country Turkey said, a crucial point for U.S. President Donald Trump, who wants a rapid peace. The negotiators’ promises to release a thousand prisoners of war, to meet again for talks and to present their vision for a ceasefire were “substantial steps”, said Peter Slezkine, a senior fellow and director of the Russia program at the Stimson Center. “I do think that they are a very hopeful sign, because the two sides coming into direct contact is an important development,” he said. Ukraine, the United States and other Western countries have called for a 30-day ceasefire without preconditions to allow for peace talks. Russia, which controls almost a fifth of Ukraine, has shown little appetite for concessions, repeating maximalist demands such as Ukraine withdrawing from and recognising Russian control over four Ukrainian regions that the Kremlin now unilaterally claims as its own but does not fully control. The measured tones of statements by both sides that followed the talks did little to paper over the chasm between them. A Ukrainian diplomatic source told Reuters that Russia made demands at the talks that were “detached from reality and go far beyond anything that was previously discussed.” The source, who declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the talks, said they included ultimatums for Ukrainian forces to withdraw from some of its own territory and “other nonstarters and non-constructive conditions.” The Kremlin’s chief negotiator Vladimir Medinsky suggested after the negotiations that Russia could fight on for as long as it needed to achieve its aims. Invoking tsarist military victories in a 21-year war against Sweden in the 18th century, he said Kyiv was merely deepening its own demise by resisting Russia’s peace demands. ‘BEGINNING OF THE JOURNEY’ The closest things to a blueprint for a peace deal that have yet to emerge are proposals circulated by the United States and counterproposals suggested by Europe and Ukraine at talks last month, which Reuters has obtained. On Saturday, a senior Ukrainian government source said Russia’s latest demands in Istanbul included Kyiv renouncing its desire for reparations, international recognition of five parts of Ukraine as Russian and that Ukraine becomes a neutral state. The demands went further than either the U.S. or Ukrainian and European proposals. One of the senior Ukrainian officials who took part in the abortive series of 2022 talks with Russia that failed to stop the all-out war told Reuters that the outcome of the renewed engagement in Istanbul had panned out entirely as expected. “Every journey begins with a single step. This is the beginning of the journey. Demands are always exaggerated at the start of any negotiations. That’s classic,” the source said. SETBACK FOR EUROPEAN SANCTIONS PUSH The fragile outcome of the talks puts the ball once again in Trump’s court. He abruptly changed tack on Thursday, a day before the negotiations, saying he needed to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin for there to be a breakthrough. His remark put paid – for now – to Europe’s hopes of pushing Washington to impose a fresh blast of sanctions on Russia. If that happened, it would be a milestone moment in Trump’s fledgling presidency, during which he has so far shown sympathies towards Russia and torn up the pro-Ukraine policies of his predecessor, Joe Biden. Just last weekend, the leaders of four major European powers travelled to Kyiv, threatening Russia with more sanctions if it did not agree to a 30-day ceasefire from May 12, a position they said the United States supported. When Putin then suggested talks instead of a ceasefire, Trump told Zelenskiy in a social media post to immediately agree and made no mention of looming Russia sanctions, despite signalling for weeks that he is frustrated with what he has said could be foot-dragging by Putin. Zelenskiy, anxious not to alienate Trump, proposed direct talks with Putin. The Kremlin leader did not respond until the eleventh hour, when he named a delegation excluding not only himself but also any of his full-fledged ministers. “You don’t send undertakers to a wedding,” Vladimir Pastukhov, a Russian political analyst, said of Medinsky’s nomination as delegation head, alluding to his role on the Russian delegation in the failed 2022 talks. After the renewed negotiations in Istanbul, the leaders of the four European powers plus Zelenskiy were again on the phone with Trump to discuss how the peace talks went. And publicly the Ukrainian team called again for direct talks between Zelenskiy and Putin, arguing that only the Russian leader has the mandate to make decisions on many of the matters at hand. Speaking to Fox News, Trump said he thought he could make “a deal” with Putin but that he would impose sanctions on Russia if “we’re not going to make a deal.” (Additional reporting by Jane Ross, Vladimir Soldaktin, Can Sezer and Pavel Polityuk; editing by Philippa Fletcher) Source link #AnalysisIstanbul #peace #talks #laid #bare #chasm #Ukraine #Russia Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
