  3. Liberal Senator Anne Ruston turns to AI in a bid to understand the crushing election defeat Liberal Senator Anne Ruston turns to AI in a bid to understand the crushing election defeat Liberal Senator Anne Ruston says “all options” must be on the table in reviewing the Coalition’s “disastrous” 2025 election loss and has even turned to artificial intelligence in a bid to understand the crushing defeat. The party’s defeat marked its worst showing in decades, suffering significant losses across urban and outer-suburban seats, particularly among women and younger voters. Senator Ruston said in the days after the election she tapped into an “off-the-shelf” AI tool as part of efforts to understand voter sentiment and analyse commentary. “I just used some, you know, off-the-shelf AI, just to ask what AI thought about the Liberal Party and the election result. There was no clear theme that came out of it,” she told ABC on Sunday. “It basically said that the product offering that we took to the *********** public, where quite clearly, Australians did not support and we need to go back to the drawing board. “More than anything, it showed me that there were so many different issues that Australians were considering when they went to the ballot box to vote.” While traditional review processes are underway — involving consultations with party members and MPs — Senator Ruston said technology should play a supporting role in analysing what went wrong. “There’s many ways that we need to address this. We need to speak to our party members. We need to speak to the front bench and the back bench,” Senator Ruston said. “We need to speak to the *********** public. But obviously, technology gives us an opportunity to be able to collate the broader commentary across Australia. “That’s something that we probably haven’t had access to before, and we should use that as well. Every tool that’s available, should be used.” Senator Ruston also backed new leader Sussan Ley, with Ted O’Brien elected deputy, to modernise the party and predicted being “extraordinarily fair” would be a hallmark of her leadership. “Sussan has made it very clear that she’s going to be ultra consultative in her process,” she said. “I think Sussan Ley is absolutely right in saying she’s not going to pre-judge, she’s not going to make any captain’s calls. She’s got to look at absolutely everything. “To be quite frank, we have to build from the bottom up again, because that election result was quite disastrous for the Liberal Party. We need to be open and honest with ourselves about what we need to take forward.” Source link #Liberal #Senator #Anne #Ruston #turns #bid #understand #crushing #election #defeat Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services and St John WA were called to the mountain after reports of an injured male hiker about 6.30pm on Saturday. SES volunteers made contact with the hiker at about 12am, but were stood down because the rescue would have been too challenging in the dark. 8. Next-gen laptops, bonkers PCs, and too much AI: here’s what I expect to see at Computex 2025 Next-gen laptops, bonkers PCs, and too much AI: here’s what I expect to see at Computex 2025 Computex 2025 is just about to kick off (the world’s largest computing showcase officially runs from May 20 to May 23), and I’ve landed in Taipei, Taiwan, to see what the future of computing holds. I’ve always loved Computex – for a start, Taiwan is a beautiful country and Taipei is an exhilarating city to visit. And, as a certified, card-carrying computer geek, I enjoy browsing the latest PCs, laptops and monitors while getting an idea of what the future holds for our digital devices. So, I’m keen to get stuck in to Computex, but before the show starts, here’s what I’m expecting to see at this year’s event – and like so many modern tech showcases (including the upcoming Google I/O), Computex 2025 will likely be dominated by two words: Artificial Intelligence. You may like 1. AI in (almost) everything (Image credit: Shutterstock / NicoElNino) AI is a big deal at the moment – at least, that’s what a lot of companies want to believe. However, despite putting AI into all kinds of products, I just don’t think consumers are that excited. Many of the companies that will be at Computex 2025 will be hoping to change that. Even ignoring the tagline ‘AI Next’, it was always going to be a safe bet that AI would be a major buzzword at Computex 2025. Nvidia, one of the biggest companies in the world, is hosting a keynote on Monday May 19, which I’ll be attending, and while the company made its fortune with graphics cards, it’s now one of the leading names when it comes to Artificial Intelligence. Nvidia’s keynote will be followed by Qualcomm (which I’ll also be attending). While not as recognisable a name as Nvidia, Qualcomm is behind a lot of the tech in many of the gadgets we have in our homes. Its Arm-based Snapdragon chips power loads of the best smartphones, and it’s been collaborating with Microsoft and laptop makers for a new generation of Arm-based laptops which are part of Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC initiative. While I’m not a huge fan of the name, these Copilot+ PCs have been pretty darn impressive so far, with the likes of the Surface Laptop impressing us enough to be included in our best laptops list. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. As you might have guessed due to the mention of Copilot, Microsoft’s AI assistant, these laptops feature chips by Qualcomm (plus Intel and AMD) that feature NPUs (Neural Processing Units) that allow complex AI tasks to be run on the device itself, rather than relying on cloud-based services that need an internet connection. I expect to see plenty of new Copilot+ PC laptops shown off at Computex – but the problem is that so far, I just don’t think either Microsoft or the laptop makers themselves have really shown off why consumers should ditch their current laptops and upgrade. Sure, with them you can use AI tools in Paint to turn your scribbles into more recognisable ‘art’ without needing an internet connection, and asking Copilot to analyse data without passing it on to Microsoft, are benefits – but they don’t get consumers excited. So, at Computex 2025 I don’t just want to see companies stuff AI into every device they can – I want them to show us why we should care. 2. Laptop batteries that last for days (Image credit: Shutterstock) Despite their focus on AI, the most exciting thing about Copilot+ PC laptops, especially the Arm-based ones, is that thanks to the power efficiency of their chips, laptop batteries last longer than ever on a single charge. No one likes a laptop battery that dies a few short hours after you’ve charged it (unless you’re using a gaming laptop, then it’s sadly to be expected), and battery life is one of the most important considerations people have when looking to buy a new laptop, so it’s great to see that laptops that can last multiple work days without needing to be plugged in are increasingly becoming the norm, rather than the exception. I’m hoping that at Computex 2025 this trend continues, and we should see some brilliant thin and light laptops that aren’t just sleek and stylish, but come with long battery lives without sacrificing raw performance. To me, as well as many consumers, that is much more exciting than yet more AI features we’re not going to be using. 3. Gaming laptops that can rival desktop PCs (Image credit: Shutterstock) As a dedicated PC gamer I’ve always thought of gaming laptops as a bit of a luxury that allows you to game while travelling and when you can’t get to your desktop PC. I never considered them as devices that could replace my desktop PC. Their high prices and lack of upgradability compared to the best gaming PCs were bad enough, but the fact that they couldn’t compete when it comes to performance, plus battery lives that were so short it meant you’d need to have a supposedly portable gaming laptop plugged into a wall socket meant I never really considered buying one. At Computex 2025, I’m looking forward to being proved wrong. This year we’ve seen some exciting advancements in portable gaming technology, including Nvidia’s RTX 50-series laptop GPUs, and I’m excited to see what the next generation of gaming laptops have in store. I want to see gaming laptops that are thin and light, last more than a few hours on a single charge and can offer the kind of perfomance in games like Cyberpunk 2077 that will rival powerful gaming PCs. Thanks to DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation (two features that are exclusive to RTX 50-series GPUs), this could be the year I finally get to see those laptops. 4. The coolest custom gaming PCs in the world (Image credit: Future / John Loeffler) Even if Computex 2025 delivers some exciting gaming laptops, my heart will always belong to desktop PCs, and previous years have only reinforced my love thanks to the brilliant custom PC builds that are on display. So, this year I’m looking forward to wandering the show floor and finding the coolest and craziest designs. You’re unlikely to be able to buy these custom PCs, and if you can then expect to pay a lot, but I love the imagination and artistry that goes into making these eye-catching PCs. They are also testaments to how customizable desktop PCs are, and I often get inspiration for when I next build a PC. 5. More PC gaming handhelds (Image credit: Asus) In recent years, a new device category has burst onto the scene: handheld gaming PCs, and I expect to see more entries in this increasingly competitive space at Computex this year. While there’s a lot of hype for the release of the Nintendo Switch 2, there are rumors that we could soon see an Xbox-branded gaming handheld soon – and Computex could be the perfect place to showcase it. I’ll admit I’m not a fan of Xbox, but what does get me excited is that this handheld will apparently be built by Asus, and will act as a follow-up to the excellent ROG Ally X handheld. Now I am a big fan of that device – in fact, I brought my own to Computex this year to keep me entertained on the long flight from London to Taipei – so seeing a powerful new successor would please me no end. My biggest gripe with the Ally X, as with a lot of other PC gaming handhelds, is that the Windows 11 operating system they use is just not suited to this form factor. If there is indeed going to be a collaboration between Xbox and Asus, I have high hopes that on Microsoft’s side it will feature a version of Windows that has been simplified to work on gaming handhelds (much like the Linux-based SteamOS has been custom designed to proivide a console-like experience on the Steam Deck). If Microsoft nails this, and Asus provides a powerful new handheld that can run the latest games in an easily-portable form factor, then forget about the Switch 2. With MSI, Acer, Zotac and more also at Computex 2025 – companies that have all released handheld gaming PCs – I’m hoping to see a range of new devices that can take on the mighty Nintendo. 11. New PlayStation handheld could go head-to-head with the Switch 2 New PlayStation handheld could go head-to-head with the Switch 2 When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Credit: Sony Sony is reportedly back in the handheld game — for real this time. Not another streaming-only companion like the PlayStation Portal, but a full-fledged portable gaming system that could launch alongside the PlayStation 6. And while that might seem far off, early rumors suggest this isn’t some speculative skunkworks concept: Sony wants a piece of the handheld game currently dominated by Nintendo’s Switch and a wave of powerful Windows handhelds like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally. But in a market that has changed so much in just a few years, simply showing up with a new console isn’t enough. The Switch 2 is launching on June 5 with significant performance gains and full backward compatibility. Valve’s next-gen Deck is likely already cooking. And even Xbox is reportedly exploring its own handheld ambitions. So, what does Sony need to get right, and what could give its new device an edge? DEAL SPOTLIGHT Features: 8-inch LCD screen, haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, supports 1080p resolution gaming at 60fps, PS5 console required.View Deal A real PlayStation handheld The PlayStation Portal was a fascinating experiment, but it wasn’t the successor to the PSP or PS Vita fans were hoping for. Limited to streaming PS5 games over Wi-Fi, the Portal was tethered to your home console like an overgrown remote. It didn’t run games natively, didn’t support Bluetooth audio, and lacked the flexibility that gamers expect from handhelds in 2025. Now, multiple sources suggest Sony is finally prepping a true gaming handheld with onboard processing power, local game playback, and a tighter connection to the PlayStation ecosystem. One leaker claimed it’s a “full-blown” handheld, not a companion device, and it may even be slated to launch alongside the PS6 in 2027 or 2028. That kind of timing matters. It means Sony is potentially designing this handheld as part of its next-gen console strategy, rather than bolting it onto the aging PS5. The Switch 2 will support existing Switch games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild from day one. | Credit: Nintendo / Laptop Mag PS4 power on the go? According to reports, Sony’s new device could land somewhere between a PS4 and a PS4 Pro in raw performance, making it powerful enough to run modern games like God of War (2018), Spider-Man, and Final Fantasy VII Remake natively. That would already place it in the ballpark of the current Steam Deck and ROG Ally running similar titles on Windows. More intriguing is the suggestion that Sony could lean heavily into streaming for newer PS5 titles. This is similar to how the Portal operates, but presumably with more robust hardware and faster connectivity (Wi-Fi 6E or 7, anyone?). The idea would be to offer a hybrid experience: Local play for compatible games and high-fidelity streaming for next-gen blockbusters. This model could also help keep costs down. Without needing to cram PS5 silicon into a portable form factor, Sony could offer excellent performance with better battery life and thermals than Windows-based devices, which often burn through a charge in two to three hours. The bar is set high The handheld gaming space is already fiercely competitive, and things are only just heating up. Nintendo’s Switch 2 is launching on June 5, bringing a huge power upgrade to the best-selling hybrid console of all time. Features include a custom Nvidia chip with DLSS upscaling, ray tracing, and a 120Hz-capable 1080p display. That’s a massive leap from the original Switch’s 720p screen and aging internals. More importantly, it will support swathes of the existing Switch library on day one, meaning games like Breath of the Wild to Tears of the Kingdom, will be playable out of the box. Sony’s rumored handheld won’t be able to match that legacy content catalog, but it could hit back with something Nintendo can’t offer: Raw performance and cinematic PlayStation titles. If it really can run PS4 games locally and PS5 titles via streaming, it puts Sony in a strong position to offer high-fidelity gaming on the go, an area where Nintendo’s hardware lags behind. Then there are Windows handhelds. The Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Ally, and Lenovo Legion Go have proven that there’s a real appetite for portable PC gaming. These devices let you play AAA titles, access massive storefronts, and even stream via Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation’s PC ports. But they aren’t without flaws: They’re bulky, often confusing for casual players, and drain battery fast when pushed hard. Even Valve’s Steam Deck struggles to hit four hours of gameplay in some titles That’s where Sony can shine. By building a closed, console-optimized system it could offer more stability, better battery life, and a user-friendly interface. Unlike Windows-based handhelds that require constant tinkering, a PlayStation handheld could just work. PS Handheld (Rumored) Nintendo Switch 2 (Confirmed) Steam Deck/ROG Ally (Current) Release Window 2027 – 2028 June 2025 Available now Performance Target PS4 / PS4 Pro-level PS4 Pro (DLSS) Comparable to PS4 / PS4 Pro Display 8-inch 1080p LCD / OLED 8-inch 1080p 120Hz LCD 7 – 8 inch LCD (60Hz) Battery Life 5 – 8 hours 2 – 6.5 hours 2 – 4 hours (AAA) 6+ hours (light) Game Library PS4 digital library, PS5 via streaming Full Switch library (eventually) Full PC library Price $399 – $499 $449 $399 – $699 OS PlayStation OS Nintendo OS SteamOS (Deck) Windows 11 (ROG) Has Sony’s PC strategy hurt its exclusivity? One lingering question is whether Sony’s aggressive PC porting undermines the appeal of a PlayStation handheld. Titles like Horizon Zero Dawn, Spider-Man, and The Last of Us Part I have all made their way to Steam, often within a couple of years of their console debuts. That means gamers with a Steam Deck, or any PC for that matter, can already (eventually) play PlayStation games portably. If Sony’s handheld doesn’t offer compelling day-one access to new first-party games, its value proposition shrinks. Why buy another device if your PC already does the job? Still, Sony seems committed to keeping new titles console-exclusive for at least a year or two. And if its handheld integrates tightly with PS6 it may have enough differentiation to win over fans who want the full PlayStation experience in a more flexible form. 13. Children die as USAID aid cuts snap a lifeline for the world’s most malnourished Children die as USAID aid cuts snap a lifeline for the world’s most malnourished DIKWA, Nigeria (AP) — Under the dappled light of a thatched shelter, Yagana Bulama cradles her surviving infant. The other twin is gone, a casualty of malnutrition and the international funding cuts that are snapping the lifeline for displaced communities in Nigeria’s insurgency-ravaged Borno state. “Feeding is severely difficult,” said Bulama, 40, who was a farmer before Boko Haram militants swept through her village, forcing her to flee. She and about 400,000 other people at the humanitarian hub of Dikwa — virtually the entire population — rely on assistance. The military restricts their movements to a designated “safe zone,” which severely limits farming. For years, the United States Agency for International Development had been the backbone of the humanitarian response in northeastern Nigeria, helping non-government organizations provide food, shelter and healthcare to millions of people. But this year, the Trump administration cut more than 90% of USAID’s foreign aid contracts and $60 billion in overall assistance around the world. Programs serving children were hit hard. Bulama previously lost young triplets to hunger before reaching therapeutic feeding centers in Dikwa. When she gave birth to twins last August, both were severely underweight. Workers from Mercy Corps enrolled them in a program to receive a calorie-dense paste used to treat severe acute malnutrition. But in February, Mercy Corps abruptly ended the program that was entirely financed by USAID. Two weeks later, one of the twins died, Bulama said. She has no more tears, only dread for what may come next. “I don’t want to bury another child,” she said. ‘Very traumatic’ Globally, 50% of the therapeutic foods for treating malnutrition in children were funded by USAID, and 40% of the supplies were produced in the U.S., according to Shawn Baker, chief program officer at Helen Keller Intl and former chief nutritionist at USAID. He said the consequence could be 1 million children not receiving treatment for severe malnutrition, resulting in 163,500 additional deaths per year. For Helen Keller Intl, its programs in Bangladesh, Nepal and Nigeria have been terminated. “It is very traumatic,” said Trond Jensen, the head of the United Nations humanitarian office in Maiduguri, Borno’s capital, of the funding cuts, noting that other donors, including the European Union, have taken similar steps this year. “One of the things is the threat to the lives of children.” UNICEF still runs a therapeutic feeding center nearby, which now supports Bulama’s surviving baby, but its capacity is stretched. It is turning away many people previously served by other aid groups that have pulled out due to funding cuts. Intersos, an Italian humanitarian organization, has the only remaining facility providing in-patient services for malnutrition in Dikwa, treating the most perilous cases. Its workers say they are overwhelmed, with at least 10 new admissions of seriously malnourished children daily. “Before the USAID cut, we made a lot of progress,” said Ayuba Kauji, a health and nutrition supervisor. “Now my biggest worry is high mortality. We don’t have enough resources to keep up.” Intersos was forced to reduce its staff from 30 to 11 in Dikwa after the USAID freeze. Its nutrition and health facilities now operate solely on support from the ********* Humanitarian Fund, a smaller pot of money contributed by a few European countries. That funding will be finished in June. The crisis is equally acute in Maiduguri, where the economy is reeling from massive terminations of aid workers. At another Intersos-run facility, 10 of the 12 doctors have left and four nurses remain, with 50 new admissions of malnourished children per week. “It used to be far less,” said Emmanuel Ali, one of the remaining doctors. Beyond nutrition The effects of the funding cuts extend far beyond nutrition. At the International Organization for Migration’s reception center in Dikwa, thousands of displaced families and those escaping Boko Haram captivity are stranded. There are no new shelters being built and no support for relocation. “Before, organizations like Mercy Corps built mud-brick homes and rehabilitated damaged shelters to absorb people from the IOM reception center,” said one official at the center, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the situation. “Now, that has stopped.” Jensen, the U.N. humanitarian head in Maiduguri, said, “sadly, we are not seeing additional funding to make up for the U.S. cuts.” He warned that vulnerable people could turn to risky ways of coping, including joining violent groups. A global problem The crisis in Nigeria is part of a larger reckoning. According to Kate Phillips-Barrasso, Mercy Corps’ vice president for policy and advocacy, 40 of its 62 U.S.-funded programs with the potential to reach 3.5 million people in Nigeria, Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Somalia, Iraq, Sudan, Afghanistan, Kenya, Lebanon and Gaza have been terminated. In Mozambique, where jihadist violence in the north has displaced over a million people since 2017, humanitarian organizations face steep shortfalls with “devastating” effects on the needy, said Frederico João, chairman of the forum of NGOs in the region. More widely, the USAID funding cut compromises Mozambique’s health sector, especially in ****/AIDS care, said Inocêncio Impissa, cabinet spokesman. The government now seeks alternative funding to prevent total collapse of health systems. Charles Mangwiro in Maputo, Mozambique, contributed to this story. ___ For more on Africa and development: [Hidden Content] The Associated Press receives financial support for global health and development coverage in Africa from the Gates Foundation. Despite a threat from Donald Trump to shut his mouth — or else, Bruce Springsteen stood his ground, unleashing another blistering critique of the president and his administration during a concert in Manchester, England, on Saturday night. The New Jersey rocker echoed many of the same sentiments delivered during the kick-off of The E Street Band’s “Land of Hope and Dreams Tour” earlier this week. “In my home, the America I love, the America I’ve written about, and has been a beacon of hope and liberty for 250 years, is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous administration,” Springsteen proclaimed. “Tonight, we ask all who believe in democracy and the best of our American experience to rise with us, raise your voices against the authoritarianism, and let freedom ring!” Before performing “My City of Ruins,” Springsteen also repeated a speech first given during the tour’s opening night in which he blasted the administration’s attack on free speech and other constitutional rights. “In America, they are persecuting people for using their right to free speech and voicing their dissent,” he noted. “In my country, they are taking sadistic pleasure in the pain that they inflict on loyal American workers, they are rolling back historic civil rights legislation that led to a more just and moral society. They are abandoning our great allies and siding with dictators against those struggling for their freedom. They are defunding American universities that won’t bow down to their ideological demands. They are removing residents off American streets and without due process of law, are deporting them to foreign detention centers and prisons. This is all happening now.” After first hearing of Springsteen’s criticism, Trump issued a not so subtle threat via his social media platform Truth Social, advising the musician to “KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT until he gets back into the Country… Then we’ll all see how it goes for him!” It seems The Boss is unbothered by the president’s threats. Yet Piastri really demonstrated the extent of his unruffled excellence at the end of a session which had to be twice red-flagged after Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda and then Alpine’s Franco Colapinto crashed in the first phase. For his decisive run on Q3 with Verstappen on provisional pole, the Melburnian star had an awkward time, admitting he “thought it was going to unravel” when he approached slower cars towards the end. But he still ended up 0.034sec quicker than Verstappen in one minute 14.670 seconds, to earn his third pole of the season, putting him in a great spot to earn a fifth win in seven races — and a fourth in a row — on Sunday to stretch his 16-point lead over Norris. “It was a very tough session with all the delays, the red flags,” said Piastri, who won in China and Bahrain from pole and has shown all season he’s at his unstoppable best when controlling the race from the front. “The lap was good. I had about four cars in the last corner, which didn’t help, but it was enough. “So, very happy with the job well done and excited for tomorrow.” It promises to be a big day on the storied circuit where Piastri will be out to equal the four wins in a row the late, great Ayrton Senna achieved in 1991 when he became the last McLaren driver to enjoy such a winning sequence. Imola, of course, was the circuit where the Brazilian was killed in 1994, with that tragic memory always hanging over the Autodromo di Imola Enzo e Dino Ferrari. Piastri himself had been alarmed after Tsunoda’s dreadful ******, and was quick to ask after the Japanese Red Bull driver’s wellbeing after the accident that led to a 15-minute delay for track repairs. Tsunoda’s car rolled upside down after hitting the barriers, but he was able to walk away and was checked out at the medical centre before returning to the paddock. Colapinto, who was returning to the grid in place of dropped *********** Jack Doohan, also went to the medical centre on a dismal return to F1. He qualified 15th, but was later dropped one place for an unrelated pit lane infringement. McLaren’s Norris was again unhappy with his own display, sighing: “I made a lot of mistakes. Never good enough in my final lap in quali, everyone goes quicker and I go slower.” But he wasn’t as unhappy as fellow Briton Lewis Hamilton, as Ferrari suffered a new low in front of their home fans, the seven-time world champ qualifying 12th and Charles Leclerc 11th. “Definitely devastated and gutted,” was Hamilton’s assessment of his first grand prix in Italy with Ferrari. – With agencies Source link #Oscar #Piastri #Aussie #stars #dream #run #continues #Imola #Grand #Prix #pole Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  18. ******** training ship crashes into Brooklyn Bridge leaving 19 people injured ******** training ship crashes into Brooklyn Bridge leaving 19 people injured At least 19 people were injured, four of them seriously, when a three-masted ******** Navy sailing ship, the Cuauhtémoc, reportedly carrying around 200 people, has struck the Brooklyn Bridge on New York’s East River. At a press conference, New York Mayor Eric Adams said that contrary to earlier reports no one had gone into the East River and all the injuries were sustained on board the tall ship. The collision occurred just before 9 p.m., with all three of the ship’s 147-feet-tall masts striking the bridge and snapping as the vessel appeared to be moving backward. Pictures emerged online, appearing to show multiple sailors clinging to rigging high up on the masts in the aftermath. X user @orenjinoir was standing on the waterfront in Brooklyn when the collision occurred and caught the moment on video. The ship appears to strike some type of scaffolding or gantry on the underside of the bridge, which can be seen swinging in the aftermath. In other footage from bystanders, people on the waterfront are seen fleeing as the ship veers toward them after the collision. Debris can be seen falling toward the deck of the ship, including portions of the masts, lights, and rigging. The sails were not up at the time. The Cuauhtémoc sits stranded after colliding with the Brooklyn Bridge (AP) The Post reports that some of the injured were transported to local hospitals and the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The ******** navy said in a post on the social platform X that the vessel was damaged in an accident with the Brooklyn Bridge that prevented it from continuing its voyage. It added that the status of personnel and material was under review by naval and local authorities, which were providing assistance. “The Secretary of the Navy renews its commitment to the safety of personnel, transparency in its operations and excellent training for future officers of the ******** Armada,” it said in Spanish. The Cuauhtémoc, a training vessel in the ******** Navy, sailed into New York Harbor on Tuesday as part of a goodwill visit to the U.S., with dozens of naval cadets seen standing on the masts as others dressed in cultural ******** attire awaited nearby. The tall ship is believed to have traveled 400,000 nautical miles and has visited 228 ports across 73 countries over 43 years. On its current voyage, the ship left Acapulco on April 6, and was scheduled to visit 22 ports in 15 nations, including Kingston, Jamaica; Havana, Cuba; Cozumel, Mexico; and New York. It had also planned to go to Reykjavik, Iceland; Bordeaux, Saint Malo, and Dunkirk, France; and Aberdeen, Scotland, among others, for a total of 254 days — 170 at sea and 84 in port. New York City’s Emergency Management Department is responding to the emergency and has warned New Yorkers to avoid the area. New York Attorney General Letitia James said she was praying for those involved and urged New Yorkers to “follow local guidance while our first responders do their jobs.” At about 10.30 p.m. est the New York emergency notification system said that Brooklyn Bridge had reopened, although it warned of delays. 20. ******** naval ship crashes into Brooklyn Bridge in New York, 200 people onboard, 23 injured ******** naval ship crashes into Brooklyn Bridge in New York, 200 people onboard, 23 injured Shocking footage has emerged of a ******** naval ship that crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, an incident that has left 23 people injured. The ******** Navy’s tall ship ARM Cuauhtémoc, which was making a festive visit to New York’s waters, is a Spanish-built barque, constructed in 1982. Around 9pm on Saturday (local time), the enormous ship which was carrying around 280 crew ploughed into the Brooklyn Bridge, with its masts snapping like twigs as collided with the steel and stone structure. WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE A search and rescue operation was launched to rescue any fallen crew from the water, however, initial reports suggest no one fell in. It is understood that some cadets, who had been standing on the mast and the ships sails for the special display, are now in a critical condition. The crew, mostly made up of cadets, hit the bridge first, before the ship made contact with concrete retaining wall of the viewing point below the bridge, which ripped the ship’s starboard side. The ******** Navy issued a statement confirming the incident. “During the departure manoeuvre of the Cuauhtémoc Sailboat in New York, an incident with the Brooklyn Bridge was recorded, causing damage to the Training Ship, preventing the continuation of the instructional cruise for the time being,” it said. “The condition of the personnel and equipment is under review by naval and local authorities, who are providing support. “The Secretariat of the Navy reaffirms its commitment to the safety of personnel, transparency in its operations, and the excellent training of future officers of the ******** Navy.” An eye witness described seeing people “hanging from the sails” as the ship crashed. “The boat was coming under the bridge, and there were sailors on top of the boat, the sails hit the bridge and then people were falling off of the boat sails,” Elijah West told the New York Post. “It was crazy. We were standing under the bridge and we all started running. Then I saw people hanging from the sails. Police boats came around fast — about five minutes later. And then police guided the boat to the (Manhattan) bridge and started the rescue. It was a shock.” The ship is currently being held in position near the Manhattan Bridge. 21. Trump to Walmart: Make less money Trump to Walmart: Make less money Photo: Andrew Harnik (Getty Images) President Donald Trump lashed out at Walmart (WMT) on Saturday, pressuring the retail giant not to raise prices after it warned that his trade war policies would force it to do so. “Walmart should STOP trying to blame Tariffs as the reason for raising prices throughout the chain,” Trump said on his social media site Truth Social. “Walmart made BILLIONS OF DOLLARS last year, far more than expected. Between Walmart and China they should, as is said, ‘EAT THE TARIFFS,’ and not charge valued customers ANYTHING. I’ll be watching, and so will your customers!!!” Trump’s insistence that Walmart “eat the tariffs” undercut his repeated assertions that tariffs are paid by foreign countries. Tariffs are paid by the companies that import goods from countries, and then those companies generally pass along at least some of that added cost to their customers. Walmart executives warned this week that higher prices are coming as soon as this month if new duties on ******** goods take effect. “We would expect price increases if those tariffs are enacted,” Walmart CFO John David Rainey Rainey told CNBC on Thursday. Consumers are “going to start seeing higher prices,” he said. The warning landed just weeks after Walmart pulled its guidance on April 9, seven days after Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariff rollout that upended global trade. “We will do our best to keep our prices as low as possible,” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon on the company’s earnings call this week. But he warned that the retailer couldn’t “absorb all the pressure” from the traiffs. Walmart has acted as a deflationary force in the U.S. economy for decades, using its massive scale and supply chain dominance — especially with low-cost ******** manufacturing — to push prices down across retail. By demanding rock-bottom prices from suppliers and passing the savings on to consumers, it helped suppress inflation in categories across the board, from socks to shampoo. Now that era may be over. “The magnitude and speed at which these prices are coming to us is somewhat unprecedented in history,” Rainey said on Thursday. In the same way its pricing once set the tone for the broader retail sector, pressuring rivals to follow suit, Walmart’s shift to raising prices allows other retailers and major brands to follow suit. Speaking to The Wall Street Journal (NWS), Harvard economist Jason Furman called it a turning point: “This isn’t Walmart taking advantage. It’s Walmart having no choice.” “That tells me that they are more afraid of their own customers and their reactions than they are of Donald Trump and his reaction,” Furman added. 24. Demand for flights to China has risen recently, Singapore Airlines exec says Demand for flights to China has risen recently, Singapore Airlines exec says SEOUL (Reuters) -Singapore Airlines has seen a surge in passenger traffic into China in recent months, but outbound travel has still not recovered to pre-pandemic levels, Chief Commercial Officer Lee Lik Hsin said on Friday. “We have seen quite a surge in inbound travel into China in the last six months or so,” Lee said at a news briefing following the release of their annual results. Load factors, or the share of seats sold on flights, on the carrier’s China flights have improved to within the 80% range, compared to the 70% range last year, he said. Singapore Airlines plane lands at Kuala Lumpur International Airport under the Malaysia-Singapore Vaccinated Travel Lane programme, in Sepang Asia’s post-pandemic air travel recovery has lagged in places due to China, the world’s second-largest economy, being slower than the rest of the world to return to international flying. Capacity into China for the carrier’s full service airline has largely recovered to pre-pandemic levels, but low-cost subsidiary Scoot is flying about 80% of its pre-COVID capacity into China, he said. Singapore Airlines on Thursday reported a record annual net profit, boosted by a one-off gain from a merger of its 49%-owned Indian carrier Vistara and Air India, but lower air fares in response to increased competition weighed on operating profit.
