  1. Control Ultimate Edition comes to Mac computers on February 12 Control Ultimate Edition comes to Mac computers on February 12 Remedy just announced that Control Ultimate Edition on February 12, 2025. The developer didn’t say which Macs would run the title, but it’s a safe bet that the game will only work on M-series computers. Control Ultimate Edition contains the original game, post-launch patches and season pass expansions. It hasn’t been revealed if this version will include the like the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. This information comes from the , a meeting of investors. Remedy made some other announcements during the gathering, including that it’s still working on Control 2. The game was and we haven’t heard much since that original announcement. The developer did note that the sequel would be an action RPG. This is interesting because the first Control had some RPG elements, with various ******* and ability upgrades, but I wouldn’t call it a full-fledged action RPG. Remedy owns the Control IP now, so it can do whatever it wants with the franchise. The developer made an announcement that the original Control would be receiving a free update early next year. This update will unlock “some previously released content.” It also crowed that the has sold more than 1.8 million units since launch. The sequel was Remedy’s . Finally, the developer offered some extremely vague plans to transform both Alan Wake and Control from “great games” to “world-class franchises” by 2030. We aren’t exactly sure what that means, but it likely points to an . Source link #Control #Ultimate #Edition #Mac #computers #February Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  2. Comcast to spin off NBCUniversal TV networks Comcast to spin off NBCUniversal TV networks US media giant Comcast is set to spin off its NBCUniversal cable television arm, as the industry continues to struggle with the emergence of streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime. The BBC understands that the plan – set to be announced on Wednesday – is to create a new company that will include channels such as MSNBC, CNBC, USA, E!, Syfy and the Golf Channel. The networks are still profitable and generated a combined revenue of $7bn (£5.5bn) in the year to the end of September. Comcast will keep NBC broadcast television network, its film and television studios and its theme parks, as well as its Peacock streaming service. Executives at Comcast believe the plan will be completed in about a year. Their expectation is that Comcast will be better placed for growth after the spinoff. The new company will have the chairman of NBCUniversal’s media group, Mark Lazarus, as its chief executive. Comcast took control of NBCUniversal in 2011 before the rise of streaming. At the time, its cable networks were seen as some of its most attractive businesses. But a growing number of cable TV viewers have been cancelling their subscriptions and moving on to streaming platforms. Comcast is the first major media company to make such a move. Earlier this year, Warner Bros and Paramount Global cut billions of dollars from the valuation of their cable TV networks earlier this year. Walt Disney has also considered spinning off its cable networks but ended up scrapping the plan. 3. Overwatch 2’s New Hero Hazard Revealed, Playable This Week Overwatch 2’s New Hero Hazard Revealed, Playable This Week Blizzard has revealed its new Overwatch 2 hero, Hazard, in an animated trailer. Ahead of the launch of season 14 on December 10, you’ll be able to play with the character from November 22-25. Named Hazardous Tactics, the animated trailer showcases a heist on Oasis, spearheaded by The Phreaks gang. Hazard, nicknamed Haz by the video captions, fuses himself with a strange substance to gain supernatural strength, with visible spikes around his body. In addition, he has a minigun for a right arm, and a Scottish accent. Developer Activision Blizzard said there’ll be new details on Hazard and his abilities later this week. Elsewhere, Overwatch: Classic is still available in Overwatch 2 until December 2. In this mode, you can only access the original roster of 21 heroes, as well as their original abilities. If you miss the old-school depictions of some of the available characters, Overwatch: Classic should scratch that nostalgic *****. If you miss the 6v6 player matches from the first Overwatch, don’t fret. The developer will be conducting tests during Season 14–the first will require a hero in each role, while the second test, slated for later in the season, will involve a classic 2-2-2 role composition with some tweaks. 6. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE Tipped to Launch in 2025 Alongside Flagship Foldable Model Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE Tipped to Launch in 2025 Alongside Flagship Foldable Model Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 is expected to launch next year as the successor to the Galaxy Z Flip 6, which debuted in July. However, a supply chain analyst now suggests that it will not be the only clamshell-style foldable smartphone to see the light of day and will be joined by a new model next year which could be easier on the pockets. This purported device is said to join the South Korean technology conglomerate’s flagship foldable smartphone lineup as an affordable alternative to the Galaxy Z Flip series. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE Launch In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ross Young, Analyst and CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), claimed that Samsung’s new affordable foldable smartphone may be known as Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE. This device is speculated to launch in 2025 as part of the next-generation Galaxy foldables. Those hoping for a Z Flip 7 FE should be excited. It looks like a Samsung FE clamshell is finally coming in 2025. — Ross Young (@DSCCRoss) November 19, 2024 The analyst further claims that the purported clamshell-style foldable handset is likely to sport a similar display as its flagship counterpart but could differ in terms of the camera system and the processor. A previous report indicated that Samsung’s rumoured affordable foldable smartphone could feature toned-down internals to keep the costs as low as possible. During its Earnings Call for Q3 2024, the company highlighted that it was exploring “ways to lower entry barriers so that more customers can actually experience foldable products.” While specifications of the purported handset are yet to be revealed, another report suggested that the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE may be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset which also powers the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6. Other New Launches In addition to the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE, Samsung is also speculated to be developing two entirely new models to join its existing lineups. This includes a Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim which may launch and become part of the flagship Galaxy S25 series “before and after” April 2025. Meanwhile, the company is also working on an additional Galaxy Z Fold 7 model which is rumoured to be a special edition variant, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 6 SE which recently made its debut exclusively in South Korea. This handset is speculated to be a simultaneous release, meaning it could be yet another smartphone making its debut alongside Samsung’s seventh-generation foldables. 7. Earth’s magnetic North Pole is shifting toward Russia. What does that mean? Earth’s magnetic North Pole is shifting toward Russia. What does that mean? The Earth’s magnetic North Pole is currently moving toward Russia in a way that British scientists have not seen before. Scientists have been tracking the magnetic North Pole for centuries, telling the British newspaper The Times that it had moved closer to the northern coast of Canada. In the 1990s, it drifted into the Atlantic before moving in a faster manner toward Siberia in Russia. Compass needles in the Northern Hemisphere point toward the magnetic North Pole, although the exact location of it changes from time to time as the contours of Earth’s magnetic field also change. The magnetic North Pole is sometimes confused with the geographic North Pole, but this spot stays at the same place as it is where all lines of longitude converge. In the 300 years between 1600 and 1900, scientists estimate that the magnetic North Pole moved about six miles per year. At the beginning of this century, it picked up to about 34 miles per year, before slowing in the last five years to about 22 miles per year. Why does the North Pole’s movement matter? The moves are tracked as the data allows the compasses in our smartphones and other navigation devices to navigate. Scientists told The Times these movements are tracked by the British Geological Survey and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. In conjunction, they make the World Magnetic Model, that predicts where the pole should be at any time. The model plays a role in the GPS systems we use on a day-to-day basis. “Planes, boats, submarines, you name it, it’s in there,” William Brown, the global geomagnetic field modeler at the British Geological Survey, said in an interview with The Times. What causes the movements? Earth’s outer core is made up of mostly molten iron, a liquid metal. Unpredictable changes in the way it flows cause the magnetic field around the Earth to shift, which then causes the magnetic core to also move. “It’s like a giant cup of tea,” Brown said to The Times. “It’s a hot liquid with the viscosity of water.” Fernando Cervantes Jr. is a trending news reporter for USA TODAY. 8. Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3: everything we know so far Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3: everything we know so far After the dramatic climax in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, fans of the Final Fantasy series have been theory-crafting and speculating on how the eventual third game would conclude this epic story. Square Enix hasn’t given us a date or title for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 yet to give it a proper entry on our list of all upcoming video games, but that hasn’t stopped it from already becoming one of our most anticipated upcoming PlayStation 5 games along with Monster Hunter: Wilds and Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. More and more information is starting to appear about what the last leg in Cloud’s adventure will look like, so let’s equip our best Materia and scan the internet for everything there is to know about Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3. Odds are this game won’t be on Xbox (at least at launch), but there are still plenty of great upcoming Xbox Series X games to look forward to. Release date speculation Square-Enix Square Enix hasn’t pulled the trigger on giving us a release date, or even a release window, for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3. However, we can speculate a bit based on what the team has said about development thus far. Recently, game director Naoki Hamaguchi spoke at a G-Star panel that was reported on by 4Gamer. The key takeaway was that the game’s plot and concept are all finalized and now the team is hard at work at actually building the game. Final Fantasy 7 Remake came out in 2020 and Rebirth four years later in 2024. Without having to learn new console hardware, it is possible Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 might end up coming as early as 2027, but that would be our most optimistic guess. Platforms Square Enix Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 hasn’t been confirmed for any platforms as of now, but it is highly likely that it will follow the same pattern as the previous entries. We predict it will launch as a PlayStation exclusive before coming to PC six months to a year later. However, there is always the chance that deals will change for this game. Trailers Square Enix No footage, screenshots, or even concept art for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 are available yet. Gameplay Square Enix Much like the refinement we saw going from Final Fantasy 7 Remake to Rebirth, we expect Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 to evolve upon the satisfying combat the series has built thus far. There will likely be some new features, but the big addition will be our final party members of Vincent and Cid being playable. The only other concrete information we know, again from that G-Star panel, was the fact that the team intends to give us the entire world to explore with our airship with no restrictions. “We will not cheat with the airship system (in Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3), but take the challenge head-on so that it can freely fly all over the game map,” Hamaguchi stated. The only other mode of traversal not yet mentioned that was included in the original game is the submarine that let us explore below the oceans. Preorder Without a release date or window, we have no preorder information for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3. As soon as we do, we will update this article. 9. Trump tariffs to push down U.S. growth going into 2026: Morgan Stanley Trump tariffs to push down U.S. growth going into 2026: Morgan Stanley Prices on displayed in a New York grocery store on Feb. 1, 2023. Leonardo Munoz | Corbis News | Getty Images Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs will dent U.S. economic growth going into 2026, said Morgan Stanley’s chief global economist Seth Carpenter. President-elect Trump has stated that he intends to impose a blanket tariff of 10% to 20% on all imports, along with extra tariffs ranging from 60% to 100% on goods imported from China. During the September Presidential debate, he described this approach as a means to extract funds from competing countries. There is also a question of when and how swiftly these tariffs get implemented. In the event that they are enacted all at once, they could result in a “big negative shock” to the economy, Carpenter told CNBC’s Sri Jegarajah on the sidelines of Morgan Stanley’s annual Asia Pacific Summit in Singapore. Carpenter, who maintained Morgan Stanley’s base case of these tariffs being spread over 2025, said they would lead to higher inflation. “Then into 2026, we think growth starts to come down a great deal in the U.S. because of those tariffs and some of the other policies,” he cautioned. “Very clear, tariffs push up inflation. Very clear, tariffs are a drag on growth for the U.S., not just for the countries that the tariffs are put on,” Carpenter added. Mark Malek, CIO at brokerage firm Siebert noted that if the proposed tariffs are levied, especially on top of those already imposed by the Joe Biden administration, a slew of sectors including the automobile, consumer electronics, machinery, construction and retail space would see higher inflation. Trump’s proposed 60% tariff on ******** goods, along with Biden’s existing 100% tariff on ********-made EVs, will “significantly impact” the auto industry, while a universal 10% tariff on consumer electronics’ imports would increase costs for companies such as Tesla, Microsoft and Apple, Malek said. These higher costs will will likely be passed along to consumers, he added. Though the U.S. consumer price index climbed 2.6% in October compared to a year ago, slightly more than September’s 2.4%, inflation has ebbed in the U.S. after years, and has prompted the U.S. Federal Reserve to cut rates. Should sweeping tariffs be enacted, markets could price out interest rate cuts entirely for 2025, said Ben Emons, chief investment officer and founder of FedWatch Advisors, adding that tariffs could also “restrain” growth. Trump names former wrestling executive Linda McMahon as his pick for education secretary Trump names former wrestling executive Linda McMahon as his pick for education secretary Linda McMahon, former administrator of the US Small Business Administration, speaks during the America First Policy Institute’s America First Agenda summit in Washington, D.C., US, on Monday, July 25, 2022. Al Drago | Bloomberg | Getty Images President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday named Linda McMahon, a former World Wrestling Entertainment executive who served in the first Trump administration, as his pick to lead the Education Department. If she is confirmed by the Senate, McMahon would oversee a department that Trump said he planned to “get rid” of as it currently exists and allow each state to individually “handle education.” “As Secretary of Education, Linda will ****** tirelessly to expand ‘Choice’ to every State in America, and empower parents to make the best Education decisions for their families,” Trump said in a statement that described McMahon as a “fierce advocate for Parents’ Rights.” McMahon is a co-chair of Trump’s presidential transition team. She was head of the Small Business Administration during his first presidency before she stepped down from the Cabinet-level post in 2019 to lead the pro-Trump America First Action super PAC. Before she joined the first Trump administration, McMahon served on the Connecticut State Board of Education in 2009, before she resigned to make unsuccessful bids in 2010 and 2012 for U.S. Senate seats in the state. CNN first reported on McMahon as Trump’s pick for education secretary. McMahon was one of Trump’s top donors during the 2024 campaign — contributing more than $20 million to the Make America Great Again Inc. super PAC, as well as $937,800 to his campaign and affiliated ****** fundraising committees. McMahon, 76, is married to former World Wrestling Entertainment CEO Vince McMahon. The Education Department has a budget of $241.6 billion and consists of roughly 13,000 workers, according to data from the Office of Personnel Management. Trump has said he plans to sign an executive order that would strip federal funding “from any school pushing critical race theory, transgender insanity, and other inappropriate *******, ******* or political content onto the shoulders of our children.” McMahon has criticized diversity, equity and inclusion programs, writing in an op-ed published by Fox News this year that DEI provisions were “irrelevant to training skilled workers” and that such policies “add costs and administrative burdens to all apprenticeship programs.” On Tuesday, McMahon joined Trump and Elon Musk, who was named as a co-chair of a new “Department of Government Efficiency,” at the SpaceX Starship launch in Texas. McMahon is chair of the board at the America First Policy Institute, a ************* think tank she launched with other former Trump administration officials in 2021. Trump has said he plans to nominate others affiliated with the organization, including former Rep. Doug Collins of Georgia for veteran affairs secretary and former Rep. Lee Zeldin of New York to lead the Environmental Protection Agency. McMahon is also the latest Cabinet pick from Trump’s transition team. 12. Final Fantasy XIV Is Coming To Mobile Devices Final Fantasy XIV Is Coming To Mobile Devices Square Enix, in partnership with Lightspeed Studios, has officially announced Final Fantasy XIV Mobile, a mobile adaptation of the popular MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV Online. The game will first launch in China, with a global release planned shortly afterward. The mobile version of the game was unveiled in a new trailer, and aims to bring the expansive world of Eorzea to players on smartphones and tablets, offering a mobile-friendly experience that preserves the key elements of the original game. According to a press release announcing the game, Final Fantasy XIV Mobile will retain many of the features that have made the original game a success, including the story-driven content and combat, along with non-combat systems like crafting, gathering, and mini-games. The mobile version will also feature low-pressure minigames such as fishing, Chocobo racing, and the Triple Triad card game. Naoki Yoshida, the producer and director of Final Fantasy XIV, noted that the mobile version will serve as a “sister” to the original game, recreating the story and combat mechanics on mobile devices. “It has been 11 years since FFXIV 2.0: A Realm Reborn launched, and this new mobile game will be a sister to FFXIV, aiming to recreate the grandeur of the original’s story and combat mechanics on mobile devices,” Yoshida explained. “Non-combat features, such as Disciples of the Land and Hand, will also be faithfully implemented and we look forward to growing alongside the passionate FFXIV community.” To ensure a high-quality experience on mobile, Final Fantasy XIV Mobile will feature visuals optimized for smaller screens, while retaining the detailed art and design that characterizes the original game. Square Enix says the mobile game will include dynamic weather systems with over 600 weather patterns, and the visuals will be adapted to maintain the level of detail found in the original FFXIV, from character models to environmental designs. FFXIV Mobile includes a number of features found in the non-mobile version of the game. The social aspects of Final Fantasy XIV will also be preserved in the mobile version. The game will offer a low-pressure environment for players to interact with others, focusing on meaningful, voluntary engagements. Whether it’s joining a party for a dungeon or interacting with other players during casual activities, FFXIV Mobile aims to replicate the community-driven experience of the original game. Final Fantasy XIV Mobile will soon be available for playtesting in China, with a global launch scheduled for a later date, which Square Enix has not yet shared publicly. Players can pre-register for the game on the official website and receive updates through various social media channels, including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. The games highlighted skew toward the typical batch of action and role-playing titles, like Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree bringing the FromSoftware juggernaut back to The Game Awards and ****** Myth Wukong getting into Game of the Year, although indies like Balatro and the family game Astro **** collected a big batch of nominations. Leading the pack this year are Astro **** and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth with seven nominations each, while Metaphor: ReFantazio received six nominations. 16. ****** Friday Samsung deals include the Music Frame Speaker for $150 off ****** Friday Samsung deals include the Music Frame Speaker for $150 off ****** Friday may still be a week and a half away, but if you were hoping to score a deal on Samsung’s Music Frame, there’s no need to wait until Thanksgiving. Ahead of next week, both Amazon and Samsung are selling the speaker for under $250. At $150 off its regular price, that’s an all-time low for the Music Frame, which will usually set you back $400. Considering Samsung only released the device earlier this year, this is a great opportunity to pick up one (or even two) for your home theater. For the uninitiated, think of the Music Frame as the speaker equivalent to Samsung’s popular Frame TV. Like its television counterpart, the Music Frame doubles as a piece of home decor. While it doesn’t have a display that will automatically cycle through digital artwork, you can manually insert prints and photos. Moreover, while pairing two Music Frames with a Frame TV is possible, it’s not limited to home theater use. The Music Frame works just fine as a standalone Wi-Fi and Bluetooth speaker. You can even use it as a smart home hub. It’s possible to mount the Music Frame on a wall or on a table, thanks to the included stand. Samsung After a $150 discount, you can get Samsung’s Music Frame for under $250. $248 at Amazon As for sound quality, Engadget senior reporter and resident audio geek Billy Steele was surprised by how good the Music Frame sounded when he got to demo it at CES earlier this year. “I was shocked by how robust and clear the overall sound quality is coming from the speaker,” he wrote at the time. “Highs and mids are adequately represented with great detail, while the bass is more restrained.“ If you’re curious, the Music Frame features two rear-facing woofers complemented by a set of two tweeters and two mid-range drivers, all four of which ***** from the front of the speaker. It also offers Dolby Atmos support, and Samsung has included its SpaceFit tech, which assists with room calibration. All told, the Music Frame is a great option for those looking for a speaker that will disappear into their home decor, but its high price can make it unappealing. At $150 off, however, it’s much easier to recommend, even if you’re on a budget. Check out all of the latest ****** Friday and Cyber Monday deals here. Ever since Einstein put forward his theory of gravity more than a century ago, researchers have been trying to find scenarios where it doesn’t hold up. But there had not been such a test at the level of the largest distances in the universe until now, says Mustapha Ishak-Boushaki at the University of Texas at Dallas. He and his colleagues used data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) in Arizona to conduct one. Details of cosmic structure and how it has changed over time are a potent test of how well we understand gravity because it was this force that shaped galaxies as they evolved out of the small variations in the distribution of matter in the early universe. DESI has so far collected data on how nearly 6 million galaxies clustered over the course of the past 11 billion years. Ishak-Boushaki and his colleagues combined this with results from several other large surveys, such as those mapping the cosmic microwave background radiation and supernovae. Then, they compared this with predictions from a theory of gravity that encompassed both Einstein’s ideas and more contemporary competing theories of modified gravity. They found no deviation from Einstein’s gravity. Ishak-Boushaki says that even though there are some uncertainties in the measurements, there is still no strong evidence that any theory that deviates from Einstein’s would capture the state of the universe more accurately. Itamar Allali at Brown University in Rhode Island says that while general relativity has been shown to hold in extremely precise tests conducted in laboratories, it is important to be able to test it at all scales, including across the entire cosmos. This helps eliminate the possibility that Einstein made correct predictions for objects of one size but not another, he says. The new analysis also offers hints for how dark energy, a mysterious force thought to be responsible for the accelerating expansion of the universe, fits within our theories of gravity, says Nathalie Palanque-Delabrouille at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California. Einstein’s earliest formulations of general relativity included a cosmological constant – a kind of anti-gravitational force that played the same role as dark energy – but previous DESI results have suggested that dark energy isn’t constant. It may have changed as the universe aged, says Palanque-Delabrouille. “The fact that we see agreement with [general relativity] and still see this departure from the cosmological constant really open the Pandora’s box of what the data could actually be telling us,” says Ishak-Boushaki. DESI will keep collecting data for several more years and ultimately record the positions and properties of 40 million galaxies, which the three scientists all say will bring clarity on how to correctly marry general relativity and theories of dark energy. This new analysis only used one year of DESI’s data, but in March 2025 the team will share takeaways from the instrument’s first three years of observations. Allali says he is anticipating these results to be consequential in several important ways, such as pinpointing shifts in the Hubble constant, which is a measure of the rate of the universe’s expansion, narrowing down the mass of elusive particles called neutrinos and even searching for new cosmic ingredients like “dark radiation”. “This analysis will weigh in on a lot more than gravity, it will weigh in on all of cosmology,” he says. 18. 2024 Election Voter Turnout Map: See Where Trump Gained and Harris Lost 2024 Election Voter Turnout Map: See Where Trump Gained and Harris Lost Change in votes compared with 2020 It may seem like a clear story: Donald Trump won the election by winning the most votes. He improved on his totals, adding about 2.5 million more votes than four years ago. But just as consequential to the outcome were Kamala Harris’s losses: She earned about 7 million fewer votes compared with Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s performance in 2020. Ms. Harris ******* to find new voters in three of the seven swing states and in 80 percent of counties across the country, a New York Times analysis shows. Harris + – × We can’t yet know how many Biden voters backed Mr. Trump or did not vote at all this cycle. But the decline in support for Ms. Harris in some of the country’s most ******** areas is particularly notable. Compared with Mr. Biden, she lost hundreds of thousands of votes in major cities including Chicago, Los Angeles and New York, and overall earned about 10 percent fewer votes in counties Mr. Biden won four years ago. Mr. Trump, by contrast, found new voters in most counties, with significant gains in red states like Texas and Florida and also in blue states like New Jersey and New York. Change in votes by county partisanship, compared with 2020 Heavily Democratic –12% +3% Moderately Democratic –10% +3% Lean Democratic –6% +3% Lean *********** –6% +4% Moderately *********** –5% +3% Heavily *********** –2% +4% Larry Sabato, the director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia, acknowledged that Biden voters who swung toward Mr. Trump played a part in Ms. Harris’s loss, but pointed to low Democratic turnout as the larger factor. “They just weren’t excited,” Mr. Sabato said of Democratic voters. “They were probably disillusioned by inflation, maybe the border. And they didn’t have the motivation to get up and go out to vote.” The national rightward shift is a continuation of voting patterns seen in the last two elections. Even in his 2020 defeat, Mr. Trump found new voters across the country. (Both parties earned more votes in 2020 than in 2016.) And although Democrats outperformed expectations in 2022, when some had predicted a “red wave,” they lost many voters who were dissatisfied with rising prices, pandemic-era restrictions and immigration policy. At the local level, three distinct patterns help illustrate the overall outcome in 2024: 1. Where both candidates gained votes, but Trump gained more. In hard-fought Georgia, both parties found new voters, but Mr. Trump outperformed Ms. Harris. For example, in Fulton County, which contains most of Atlanta, Ms. Harris gained about 4,500 votes, but Mr. Trump gained more than 7,400. By Eli Murray, Elena Shao, Charlie Smart and Christine Zhang In addition to his gains in the Atlanta area, Mr. Trump won new voters in every other part of Georgia. He flipped the state back to Republicans after Mr. Biden’s win there in 2020. He similarly outran Ms. Harris where she made gains in Wake County, N.C., Lancaster County, Pa., and Montgomery County, Texas. 2. Where Trump gained a little and Harris lost a little. In Milwaukee County in swing-state Wisconsin, Ms. Harris lost 1,200 voters compared with Mr. Biden’s total in 2020, while Mr. Trump gained more than 3,500. By Eli Murray, Elena Shao, Charlie Smart and Christine Zhang Ms. Harris still won the county at large, but her margins there and in other ******** enclaves of Wisconsin were not enough to hold off Mr. Trump’s victories in rural, blue-collar counties that voted *********** in 2016 and 2020. Democrats’ inability to maintain their vote totals in battleground states was also apparent in the crucial areas around Charlotte, N.C., Flint, Mich., and Scranton, Pa. 3. Where Trump gained a little and Harris lost a lot. Mr. Trump won Florida’s Miami-Dade County, becoming the first *********** to do so since 1988. But again, Ms. Harris’s loss was just as much of the story as his gain: Mr. Trump won about 70,000 new votes in the county, while she lost nearly 140,000. By Eli Murray, Elena Shao, Charlie Smart and Christine Zhang Other counties that Mr. Trump flipped had similar vote disparities. In 21 of these 77 counties, Mr. Trump received fewer votes in this election than in 2020, but the Democratic vote drop-off was much steeper. This happened from coast to coast, from Fresno County, Calif., to Pinellas County, Fla. Joel Benenson, the chief pollster for Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns, said he thought Democratic turnout was hurt by the party’s lack of a presidential primary. (Mr. Biden dropped out of the race in July.) That process, he said, helps energize core voters who get involved with volunteering, making phone calls and knocking on doors early in the year. “That was a real challenge for Vice President Harris, who had a short runway and would have benefited from a real primary season,” Mr. Benenson said. “Republicans had a contested primary — even with a former president, they didn’t just hand it to him.” Mr. Trump was clearly able to harness enthusiasm beyond his base. He made gains across almost all groups ranging in demographics, education and income, including those that traditionally made up the Democratic coalition. Ms. Harris ******* to match Mr. Biden among the same groups. He picked up votes in majority-Hispanic counties and in ****** neighborhoods of major cities, a preliminary analysis of precinct data shows. But he lost votes, as did Ms. Harris, in majority-****** counties, especially those in the South where turnout dropped overall. Mr. Trump found new voters in more than 30 states, including in the battleground states that were the sites of robust campaigning. His gains were modest in most other places. Ms. Harris was able to improve on Mr. Biden’s performance in only four of the seven battlegrounds and just five states overall. Change in votes by state, compared with 2020 Tap columns to sort. He said that internal polling showed that voters who cast a ballot in 2024 after not voting in 2022 or 2020 supported Mr. Trump, 52 percent to 46 percent. “The strategy was very much like 2016, to bring out casual voters who thought the country was on the wrong track,” Mr. McLaughlin said. “These voters blamed Biden and Harris and generally had positive approval for Trump.” Notes County election results are from the Associated Press. The county analysis is based on data for counties where counting was at least 94 percent complete as of Nov. 19. Results for Alaska are statewide. The 2024 precinct results are from the Georgia Secretary of State, the Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Elections and the Milwaukee County Clerk. The 2024 precinct boundary files are from state and local officials. The 2020 precinct results for Atlanta and Miami-Dade are from the Voting and Election Science Team. For Milwaukee’s 2020 precincts, The Times used a data set by John D. Johnson of Marquette Law School based on the county clerk and the Wisconsin Legislative Technology Services Bureau. In Atlanta and Miami, The Times used data from the 2020 decennial census to create a population-weighted estimate of the 2020 vote within 2024 precinct boundaries. These estimates were used to calculate the change in the number of votes for each candidate in 2024, compared with 2020. 19. Italian village offers $1 homes to Americans upset by the US election result Italian village offers $1 homes to Americans upset by the US election result For travel tips, recipes and more insight on Italian culture, sign up for CNN’s Unlocking Italy newsletter. This eight-part guide will have you packing your bags in no time. While many communities around the world have been wondering what to make of Donald Trump’s presidential re-election, a village on the Italian island of Sardinia has sniffed a potential opportunity. Like many other places in rural Italy, Ollolai has long been trying to persuade outsiders to move in to revive its fortunes after decades of depopulation. It’s been selling dilapidated houses for as little as one euro — just over a dollar — to sweeten the deal. Now, following the November 5 vote outcome, it’s launched a website aimed at would-be ********* expats, offering up more cheap homes in the hope that those upset by the result will rush to snap up one of its empty properties. “Are you worned (sic) out by global politics? Looking to embrace a more balanced lifestyle while securing new opportunities?” the website asks. “It’s time to start building your ********* escape in the stunning paradise of Sardinia.” Mayor Francesco Columbu tells CNN that the website was specifically created to attract ********* voters in the wake of the presidential elections. He says he loves the ******* States and is convinced Americans are the best people to help revive his community. “We just really want, and will focus on, Americans above all,” he says. “We can’t of course ban people from other countries to apply, but Americans will have a fast-track procedure. We are ******** on them to help us revive the village, they are our winning card.” ‘Preferential treatment’ Properties on offer include dilapidated homes at giveaway prices to ready-to-occupy buildings for up to $105,000. – Roberto Tangianu/Sardegna Live Columbu says the village is now offering three tiers of accommodation: Free temporary homes to certain digital nomads, one-euro homes in need of renovations, and ready-to-occupy houses for prices up to 100,000 euros ($105,000). The mayor says he’s set up a special team to guide interested buyers through every step of the purchase, from organizing tailored private tours of the available dwellings to finding contractors, builders and navigating required paperwork. He says photos and plans of available empty properties will be soon be uploaded to the website. In the past century, Ollolai’s population has shrunk from 2,250 to 1,300 with only a handful of ******* born each year. Many families left the village during tough economic times, in search of work and better lives. Over the last few years, the poulation has further dropped to barely 1,150 residents. While the village may be desperate to lure newcomers in an attempt to stop depopulation, the offer of “preferential treatment” to Americans, as Columbu describes it, may seem a bit controversial. The website does not mentioned having a US passport as a prerequisite, but the mayor says US citizens will be favored above potential applicants of other nationalities. “Of course, we can’t specifically mention the name of one US president who just got elected, but we all know that he’s the one from whom many Americans want to get away from now and leave the country,” Columbo adds. “We have specifically created this website now to meet US post-elections relocation needs. The first edition of our digital nomad scheme which launched last year was already solely for Americans.” The mayor says the town hall’s website has been flooded recently with 38,000 requests of information on houses, mostly coming from the ******* States. “So we were really looking to create a platform that caters to US citizens, and to group together our various projects,” says Columbu. A remote paradise The town is also trying attract digital nomads. – Roberto Tangianu/Sardegna Live Ollolai has previously tried to lure new residents with appealing housing schemes. In 2018, as first reported by CNN, the town hall started selling dilapidated empty homes for one euro. Then it went on to rent empty working spaces for a symbolic one euro. Lastly, starting last year, it launched a “work from Ollolai” program for digital nomads. So far four Americans have been hosted in fully equipped dwellings for a symbolic one euro. In return, they had to create something for the community, like an artwork or book. The town hall pays to rent the homes from local families for the remote workers, paying roughly 350 euros per month for multi-floor, two-bedroom dwellings. Utilities, bills and council taxes are also covered. But revival plans have not been going as well as local authorities had hoped. Since 2018, only 10 homes have been sold for one euro and renovated, says Columbu. “The village ******** half empty, we still have about 100 unoccupied cheap homes potentially on *****, ready to move in. We have mapped and listed them all, and soon photos will be online for buyers to take a look at.” Most buildings are located in the historical center and come in varying sizes. They’re picturesque old farmers’ and shepherds’ dwellings made from local granite rocks. Some turnkey properties are even furbished and equipped with modern comforts. There are zero demographic requirements for US applicants; these can be people of all ages, pensioners, remote workers or entrepreneurs who wish to open a small business in the village. Ollolai is off the beaten track, ideal for those who want to unplug and live a simpler life. Located in a wild mountain region, it rises on a pristine patch of land where ancient farming traditions live on. It boasts fresh, pollution-free air, few crowds and great views. In fall during an event known as cortes apertas (open courtyards) sees stables and ancient turf taverns open to the public, offering wine, ham, cheese and other delicacies. The area is famous for its locally produced Casu Fiore Sardo cheese. Another highlight of Ollolai’s calendar is a masked carnival with goat-like costumes and archaic rituals held in February each year. Markets recovered from jitters U.S. markets mostly closed higher on Tuesday after dipping in response to news of heightened geopolitical tensions. Shares of Super Micro Computer jumped 31%. The pan-********* Stoxx 600 fell 0.45%, closing at its lowest level in more than three months. Meanwhile, Eurostat confirmed that the euro zone’s annual inflation was 2% for October. New billion-dollar business for Qualcomm Qualcomm expects to make an additional $22 billion per year by 2029, the chipmaker announced at its investor day on Tuesday. PC chips, which Qualcomm launched just earlier this year, will contribute $4 billion in sales, Qualcomm said. It’s part of CEO Cristiano Amon’s push to diversify away from Qualcomm’s smartphone chip business. Venture funding for Europe stabilizing Europe’s startups are expected to secure $45 billion in investments from venture capital firms by the end of 2024, said VC firm Atomico. That’s a drop from the $47 billion last year, but Atomico thinks the funding situation in Europe has “stabilized.” The entire ********* tech ecosystem could be valued at $8 trillion by 2034, predicted Atomico. [PRO] S&P has room to grow in 2025 Goldman Sachs sees the S&P 500 reaching 6,500 in 2025, implying an upside of almost 10% from Tuesday’s close, on the back of a strong U.S. economy and expanding corporate margins. The bank’s team of equity strategy analysts, led by David Kostin, recommends five strategies to capitalize on the S&P’s growth next year. The bottom line Investors briefly sought refuge in safe haven assets like gold and bonds on increased geopolitical tensions: Russia reported that Ukraine had struck the country with U.S.-made missiles, and signaled it’s ready to respond with its nuclear arsenal. “The conflict is escalating … I clearly expect to see some kind of immediate reaction, knee-***** reaction,” Tiffany McGhee, CEO and CIO of Pivotal Advisors, told CNBC. That evacuation into less risky assets was only temporary, however. Stocks fell briefly on the news, but most U.S. indexes recovered to close higher on Tuesday. The S&P 500 added 0.4% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.04%, though the Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 0.28%. It seems that once investors digested those geopolitical events, they decided other factors were more important to the markets. As McGhee pointed out, “This is year three of the conflict and while initially we saw spikes in prices … that’s kind of leveled off,” she said. One of those factors is Nvidia’s earnings, out tomorrow. Anticipation for the report is so great that the chipmaker’s shares soared 4.9%. Indeed, the options market is saying that Nvidia’s earnings will move the S&P more than U.S. jobs data, inflation readings or even Federal Reserve meetings, wrote Gonzalo Asis, equity-linked analyst at Bank of America Securities. And investors won’t just be looking at Nvidia’s sales for the previous quarter. They’ll want to know if the chipmaker’s next-generation Blackwell chips can sustain – or even cement – Nvidia’s dominance in the artificial intelligence chip industry. Last month, CEO Jensen Huang described demand for Blackwell as “insane,” but worries bubbled up yesterday over a report that stated the chip overheats in custom servers. Past results aren’t an indication of future performance. That’s something every investor knows. Considering Nvidia’s performance over the past two years, however, it’s hard to think of any other asset that will give investors the same sense of safety. — CNBC’s Ruxandra Iordache, Katrina Bishop, Brian Evans, Samantha Subin and Pia Singh contributed to this report. The list honored many of this year’s biggest games, from Astro **** to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. For anyone who has been following video games closely in 2024, it’s a predictable list that’s heavy on well-received big-budget games and one key indie breakthrough. Of course, not everyone is happy. Discourse is already brewing on social media on everything from ****** Myth: Wukong‘s Game of the Year nomination to Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree making the cut despite being a DLC. As is the case every year, it’s a hodgepodge of deserving nominees, disappointing omissions, and downright weird picks. Let’s break down the biggest takeaways from this year’s list, from the surprises to the “snubs.” Surprise: Balatro lands Game of the Year LocalThunk Indie games have had a notoriously difficult time making a splash at the Game Awards (much more on that in a moment), but one did break through this year: Balatro. On paper, the poker roguelike isn’t the kind of game that typically gets a Game of the Year nomination. That category tends to favor flashy, big-budget games over innovative oddities. Balatro is the rare game to break that curse, fighting alongside giants like Astro **** and ****** Myth: Wukong. It deserves that spot too; Balatro is an ingenious work of game design that finds new depth in the classic deck of cards. It feels as foundational to its genre as Hades did in 2020. Snub: Other indies still struggle to make waves Annapurna Interactive Despite Balatro‘s big moment, The Game Awards still have a massive problem when it comes to indie games. It is next to impossible for indies to compete in most categories outside of a select handful designed for them. Neva managed to land a nomination for Best Art Direction, but that’s virtually the only breakthrough here aside from Balatro. 1000xResist missed out on Best Narrative, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes couldn’t nab recognition for its direction, Children of the Sun didn’t get honored for sound design while Call of Duty once again eased into the spot. This has long been a problem with the ceremony, but this year feels like a breaking point: It increasingly feels like no one is taking these nominations very seriously. A handful of popular zeitgeist games get shuffled into every category with little thought put in. It’s a failing on the jury that selects these nominations, but the Game Awards itself too, which is set up to favor those games in subtle ways — consider that the narrow Best Action Adventure is a category, but not Adventure, excluding as large swath of games. Until there’s a rethink of how nominations are created, The Game Awards feels less like the Oscars and more like the MTV Movie Awards. Surprise: Silent Hill 2 hits big Konami Perhaps the biggest surprise of 2024 is Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2. Before its release, fans of the PS2 classic were bracing for a clumsy remake that misunderstood the original horror game. As it turned out, Bloober Team nailed the assignment and delivered one of the year’s best. Now, the studio has four nominations to commemorate its work: Best Narrative, Best Audio Design, Best Score and Music, and a Best Performance nomination for Luke Roberts. A few of those nominations feel a bit lazy considering that the remake doesn’t stray very far from the original’s writing or music, but it’s great to see a happy ending for a studio that proved the doubters wrong. Snub: Thrasher, Riven miss out on VR honors Creature It’s been a phenomenal year for VR gaming, and this year’s Best VR/AR Game category shows that. Batman: Arkham Shadow and Asgard’s Wrath 2 are both certified blockbusters that are shoe-ins for the awards. But as is always the case at The Game Awards, it feels like the tech’s best games tend to fall to the wayside in favor of VR ports of existing titles. This year, both Thrasher and Cyan Worlds’ excellent Riven remake — two of the year’s best even outside of VR — ******* to get a spot, Meanwhile, VR versions of games like Metro and Metal: Hellsinger did. It’s a bit of a letdown considering the quality of something like Thrasher that was built with the tech in mind, but it’s hard to argue with the big games that made the cut. Surprise: Super Mario Party Jamboree gets some love Nintendo With nominees this dull, it’s the little things that add some light. The most pleasant surprise for me this year is that Super Mario Party Jamboree got recognized in not one but two categories: Best Family Game and Best Multiplayer. The former isn’t surprising, but the latter is. Best Multiplayer tends to be reserved for high-skill online games and shooters, like Call of Duty: ****** Ops 6. It’s not as friendly to a series like Mario Party, but this year’s installment earned its spot. It’s a solid package that finds the core board game experience at its best. With several inventive modes padding out the package, including the mass multiplayer Koopathalon and the co-op Bowser’s Ka-***** Squad, Jamboree deserves its place right next to the big boys. Snub: Best Mobile game, in general ***** There are a few categories at the Game Awards that are so painfully out of touch with reality that you have to question the entire voting process for the show. Best Mobile Game is chief on that list, and it ******** on top this year. Looking at the nominees every year, it becomes very apparent that a lot of voters don’t play a lot of mobile games. The category is often dominated by free-to-play games and big IP. Services like Apple Arcade and Netflix tend to walk away empty handed while middling games like Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis waltz their way to the ceremony. This year is no different, as games like Netflix’s Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure lost out to free behemoths like Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket. Even Apple Arcade’s solid Sonic Dream Team couldn’t get recognition while microtransaction heavy gacha games did. One could make the argument that not enough people have subscriptions to the services that these games are on, but it’s a jury’s job to play and consider a wide array of games rather than the ones most easily available to them. To anyone who actually pays attention to the mobile or VR landscapes, it’s clear that there’s a disconnect. Surprise: Kunitsu-Gami sneaks into Best Strategy Game Capcom I’ll be honest: Finding genuine surprises on this list of nominees is a difficult task. Very little is exactly a surprise, as each field went about the way you’d expect. If it’s not clear from what I’ve said so far, it’s a disappointing field of easy nominees. So I can only focus on the small wins here, and Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess landing in Best Sim/Strategy Game fits that bill. Capcom’s oddball tower defense game is one of the year’s best, presenting a stylish and innovative spin on a classic genre. It’s unlike anything I’ve played and deserves its spot in what I’d call this year’s strongest category. Kunitsu-Gami will go head to head with Frostpunk 2, Manor Lords, Unicorn Overlord, and Age of Mythology Retold. That’s a stacked field. Snub: Should Hades 2 have been nominated? Supergiant Games Perhaps the most notable omission from this year’s nominees is Hades 2. Despite being a critical darling, the roguelite received zero honors this year. That’s likely due to the fact that it’s still in early access, so the voting jury felt it wasn’t quite ready to judge. It’s understandable, but should it have been considered? After all, Manor Lords picked up two nominations despite being an early access game. Hades 2‘s excellent action already feels developed enough to earn it a spot in Best Action, and its already excellent soundtrack isn’t likely to change much before 1.0. I personally wouldn’t include it in a category like Game of the Year yet, but’s it’s another area where the nominations feel inconsistent. That leads to an overall lifeless batch of nominees that highlight the need for a methodology shakeup. 25. Living in Indian capital is like watching a dystopian film again and again Living in Indian capital is like watching a dystopian film again and again Getty Images Pollution has disrupted transport services in Delhi Winter has come to Delhi and with it, a familiar sense of gloom. The sky here is grey and there is a thick, visible blanket of smog. If you stay outdoors for more than a few minutes, you can almost taste ash. You will feel breathless within minutes if you try to run or even walk at a brisk pace in the smog. Newspapers are back to using words like toxic, deadly and poisonous in their main headlines. Most schools have been shut and people have been advised to stay indoors – though those whose livelihoods depend on working outdoors can’t afford to do so. Delhi’s air quality score was somewhere between 1,200 and 1,500 on Monday and Tuesday, according to different monitoring agencies. The acceptable limit is less than 100. These scores measure the levels of particulate matter – called PM 2.5 and PM10 – in the air. These tiny particles can enter the lungs and cause a host of *********. On social media, people have been expressing shock, disappointment and anguish that it’s all happening again. Along with the gloom, there is a strong sense of déjà vu – like we have seen this all many times before in the past 15 years. Getty Images Many people still brave the poisonous air to go on walks I recorded this video of my drive to office in 2017, when smog had reduced visibility to less than 2m. On Tuesday, my drive to the office seemed even worse. And we have covered every twist and turn of this story in the past two decades. We have reported how pollution is making people ***** and reducing their life expectancy here, here and here. We have reported on India’s Supreme Court ordering the government to take urgent steps to curb pollution every year. The court has done the same this year. We have reported on how pollution affects children the most and how their freedom is taken away here, here and here. We have written about how politicians blame each other for the problem every year here, here and here. We have discussed the root cause of the problem here, here and here. We have also talked about solutions – both the ones that marginally worked and the ones that ******* miserably – here, here and here. We have reported on how pollution affects the poorest the most and how many don’t have a choice but to go out and work in the smog here, here and here. EPA Smog guns that spray water are among anti-pollution measures used in Delhi Covering this story feels like watching (and being in) the same dystopian film every year – following the same characters, plot and script. The outcome is always the same – nothing changes. The parks are empty again – people, particularly children and the elderly, have been told to stay indoors. Those who must work – daily-wage labourers, rickshaw pullers, delivery riders – are coughing but still going out. Hospitals are seeing an increasing number of people coming in with respiratory problems. And amid all this, we are back to the same question again – why does nothing change? The simple answer is that solving Delhi’s air problem requires monumental efforts and coordination. The sources of the problem are many. One of them is the practice of farmers burning crop ******** to clear their fields quickly to sow seeds for the next yield. This mostly happens in the neighbouring states of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. The smoke from the farm fires engulfs Delhi every winter and hangs low in the atmosphere as wind speeds reduce during winter months. But farmers can’t be entirely blamed for this because this is the cheapest way of clearing fields. Different governments have talked about providing machines and financial incentives to stop crop burning, but very little has happened on the ground. Reuters Emissions from vehicles contribute significantly to pollution in Delhi Delhi itself produces a huge chunk of the pollution – emission from vehicles, construction and factories. Every year, in the winter months, people get ******, journalists write and produce reports, politicians blame each other and courts fume – until we do it all over again the next year. A public health emergency like this would spark mass protests in most democracies. But the anger in Delhi is mostly limited to social media. Activists say the reason is that pollution doesn’t cause immediate problems for most people. Ingesting high levels of PM2.5 deteriorates health slowly. A Lancet study found that pollution led to more than 2.3 million ********** deaths in India in 2019. And then there is the class divide. People who can afford to temporarily leave the city do that, those who can buy air purifiers do that, and those who can vent on social media do that. The rest, who don’t have these options, just go about their lives. The collective angst has so far not resulted in a massive protest and, as the Supreme Court once observed, politicians just “pass the buck” and wait for the season to get over. Experts say governments at the federal level and in different states need to leave their party politics behind and work together to solve this problem. They need to focus on long-term solutions. And citizens need to hold politicians accountable and courts have to pass decisive orders months before the pollution worsens. This year, we are again in the thick of the season and temporary measures have been announced, like banning construction work. But can these bring Delhi’s elusive blue skies back? The evidence from the past few years doesn’t give much hope. Follow BBC News India on Instagram, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.
