  2. Federal DEI crackdown threatens Illinois graduate student scholarship program Federal DEI crackdown threatens Illinois graduate student scholarship program The Trump administration’s crackdown on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives threatens an Illinois program that provides scholarships to ********* graduate students who agree to stay in the state and work in the education field. On March 31, the U.S. Department of Justice notified universities participating in the Diversifying Higher Education in Illinois scholarship and the Illinois Board of Higher Education, which disperses the scholarship funds, that the program “unconstitutionally discriminated on the basis of race in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment,” according to an April 11 Department of Justice news release. “After the Justice Department threatened to file suit, the state and six universities suspended the program,” the DOJ release said. But Gov. JB Pritzker, who included funding for the program in his February budget proposal, continues to support an expenditure for the scholarship as budget negotiations continue in Springfield, said Alex Gough, a spokesperson for the governor’s office. A spokesperson for Attorney General Kwame Raoul’s office declined to comment, citing an ongoing DOJ investigation of the scholarship program. The spokesperson did not respond to a request for details about the investigation. The DOJ did not return emailed requests for comment. Colleges and universities nationwide have been under fire from the administration of President Donald Trump for months on a number of fronts, among them DEI initiatives, which the administration has said “disregard merit and divide Americans based on race.” The DOJ cited a 2023 Supreme Court decision that effectively ended the use of race as a factor in university admissions to justify its decision that the Illinois scholarship program was unlawful. DOJ’s statement on the program said the scholarship used “race as a prerequisite for participation, specifically excluding students of some races but not others in violation of federal law.” “This Department of Justice is committed to rooting DEI out of American institutions, including in the education system,” Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in the news release on the scholarship program. At an unrelated news conference Monday, Raoul, without pointing specifically to the scholarship, said that while policies must be evaluated to make sure they’re consistent with the law, it’s also “critically important” for educational institutions to “not succumb to fear.” He said if they do, they become vulnerable to continued threats from the federal administration. “It’s important to double down on the type of policies that prevent discrimination in the workplace or at an educational institution in the first place, and not to back away from those,” Raoul said. “I would say, ‘Fight back.’ You can do the evaluation and continue to do and to embrace the tools that create a diverse and inclusive workplace.” The Diversifying Education in Illinois scholarship program offers up to four years of need-based financial aid for ********* students pursuing graduate degrees if the students agreed to accept a teaching or staff position at an Illinois higher education institution, governing board or education-related position in a state agency when they graduate or leave their school. The scholarship is open to Illinois residents who are members of an “underrepresented group,” including ******, Hispanic and Asian-American populations, according to the program’s website. The program was created by a 2004 state law that was passed after an IBHE study found that “the presence of students and faculty/staff from various ethnic groups was very important in the decision of underrepresented students to stay in school.” More than $2 million was appropriated in the state’s budget last year to fund scholarships at 14 universities in Illinois. A spokesperson for the Illinois Board of Higher Education said the remaining funds for the current year were dispersed to students following the DOJ threat. “As the Board of Higher Education explained to the DOJ, there are no activities scheduled to take place over the next few months on Illinois’ scholarship program,” said José García, an IBHE spokesperson. “Illinois agreed to conduct an evaluation of the program and will consult with the General Assembly since this program is enshrined in Illinois law.” State Rep. La Shawn Ford, a Chicago Democrat, said he has been working with IBHE and plans to support funding for the program going forward. But he said it won’t include funding for private universities that withdrew from the program after the DOJ’s threat. While IBHE said all remaining scholarship funds were dispersed, some private university students said they did not receive the last installment of their scholarship because their institution turned down the funds to stay in compliance with the DOJ. Spokespersons for several of the private universities the DOJ said dropped the scholarship program referred questions to the IBHE. Adler University in Chicago received the letter from the DOJ in March saying the institution’s participation in the program “endangered its compliance with Title VI regulations,” according to a university spokesperson. The university’s decision to drop the scholarship has left some students in a tough spot, particularly since the federal government has resumed collecting defaulted federal student loans, ending a COVID-19 era pause. Sahar Al-Najjar, a doctoral candidate studying clinical psychology at Adler University, said she was informed she was losing the scholarship the same week she was expected to resume payment on her federal student loan. Al-Najjar had to drop a summer course she couldn’t afford without the scholarship’s support. “I had to really sit down and move things around and try to figure out what is most feasible in the moment,” Al-Najjar said. “This fellowship had really took off that load, that stress, the past few years because of the support that extended in various ways — the community piece, the financial piece, the connection piece with other scholars and fellows. I’m really grateful for it, but really sad, because it would have been great to finish off this year with it.” Margaritta Fultz, a doctoral candidate at Adler University who works as an administrative aide at the University of Illinois Springfield, said she did not receive the last $6,000 of her $18,000 scholarship, which would have supported her summer term. Fultz said she is also unsure if students who promised to stay in the state to teach are still bound to do so. “My response was just complete and utter horror,” Fultz said. “I needed that funding, now the burden of my long-term debt is going to be pressed more to complete my study and my dissertation.” Fultz said the scholarship helped her continue her doctoral degree last year after she had dropped out due to costs and loan burdens. “The scholarship was an opportunity pathway with me being a neurodivergent ****** woman,” said Fultz, who was recently diagnosed with autism. “It was already a challenge to make sure I had the technology that I needed, and things of that nature so that I could even perform academically at the rate that you have to.” Source link #Federal #DEI #crackdown #threatens #Illinois #graduate #student #scholarship #program Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  6. US PGA 2025: Scottie Scheffler mimics Tiger Woods with victory US PGA 2025: Scottie Scheffler mimics Tiger Woods with victory While Rory McIlroy’s win at the Masters was an emotional outpouring as a result of his 11-year major drought and career Grand Slam, Scheffler’s win on Sunday felt close to the opposite. McIlroy’s Masters Sunday was a rollercoaster of highs and lows. Scheffler’s US PGA Sunday felt like an inexorable journey towards the inevitable. That said, he was by his standards all over the place on the front nine. The control and measure we have come to associate with the world number one were rarely seen; but for a hot putter, it would have been even worse. But no-one in golf – and few across all sports – are as mentally strong or as adept at bouncing back as Scheffler. His bogey on the ninth meant he and a charging Jon Rahm were tied on nine under. Normal humans would likely have panicked and crumbled. Scheffler responded by birdieing the 10th. It was one of the six times at Quail Hollow that he followed a bogey with an immediate bounce-back birdie. It felt like a key moment, and so it proved. Scheffler was suddenly imperious, picking up further strokes with ridiculous ease at the 14th and 15th. The chasing Rahm faltered, bringing to mind the travails of Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh as they desperately tried to reel in Tiger Woods in his pomp. He has a long way to go to match Woods in every sense, but there is no doubt Scheffler is the closest thing in mentality and competitive nature we have seen since the 15-time major champion’s peak years. That was illustrated equally as well 12 months ago, even though he did not win the US PGA. Shortly before the second round in Kentucky, Scheffler was arrested on his way into the tournament as he tried to avoid heavy traffic caused by an earlier unrelated accident in which a male pedestrian died. The picture of him in an orange prison jumpsuit went viral but he still made his tee time and, despite a minimal warm-up and with his mind surely scrambled, shot a scarcely believable five under par on day two. His weekend challenge faltered but he still remarkably finished eighth. From mugshot and jail cell to a top-10 finish in a major within 54 hours. A year to the day of his arrest, Scheffler demolished Quail Hollow’s infamous three-hole stretch from the 16th that is dubbed The Green Mile, named in honour of Stephen King’s prison novel that later became a movie. He was five under from the 14th to the 18th and that detached him from the pack, giving him the cushion that meant his scrappy front nine on Sunday was not terminal. It may well not have been lost on him that a year on from his own jail saga, it was down The Green Mile that he took charge of the US PGA. 13. Can a $10,000 Investment in Palantir Technologies Turn Into $1 Million by 2035? Can a $10,000 Investment in Palantir Technologies Turn Into $1 Million by 2035? Shares of Palantir are up nearly 20-fold since the start of 2023. Its Artificial Intelligence Platform is driving strong sales growth outside of its core government customer base. Here’s how much Palantir shares could reasonably be worth by 2035. 10 stocks we like better than Palantir Technologies › Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR) has been one of the biggest winners of the artificial intelligence (AI) ***** of the last few years. If you had invested $10,000 in the stock at the start of 2023, you’d have about $200,000 worth of the company, as of this writing. At its current rate, it seems like only a matter of time until that $10,000 investment turns into $1 million. But can investors reasonably expect a $10,000 investment in Palantir today to turn into $1 million by the end of 2035? Here’s what it’ll take for Palantir to 100x over the next decade. Image source: Getty Images. Palantir has seen fantastic growth in its business, mostly thanks to the success of its Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP). The AIP makes its software, which takes big data sets and draws actionable insights for enterprises and governments, accessible to almost anyone by leveraging natural language processing. Instead of having to get nitty-gritty with the data, a user can easily interact with proprietary data with the help of AI to build new applications and workflows and make decisions. AIP expands Palantir’s user base beyond data scientists and specialists. It also allows an enterprise to incorporate Palantir’s software into more parts of its business where users might not be as technically savvy. As a result, Palantir has seen extremely strong growth, particularly among U.S. commercial customers. U.S. commercial revenue climbed 71% year over year last quarter. Management expects revenue to come in between $3.89 billion and $3.902 billion for 2025. That’s a growth rate of about 36% for the year, accelerating from last year’s 29% growth. As the fast-growing U.S. commercial revenue continues to become a ******* part of its business, growth could continue accelerating for some time. If Palantir keeps up an average 35% revenue growth pace through 2035, it’ll generate over $75 billion in annual revenue that year. Considering the high margins of software-as-a-service (SaaS) businesses, that could be an extremely profitable business. For example, Salesforce (NYSE: CRM), a much ******* SaaS company, has an operating margin exceeding 20% at roughly $38 billion in annual revenue. It’s not unreasonable to expect a company twice that size to produce 25% or even 30% operating margin. As such, Palantir could be generating over $20 billion in operating profits in 2035 if it remains on the current growth trajectory. Story Continues Those are lofty projections, but not completely outside of the realm of possibility for a company with the potential of Palantir. But that’s a bullish case. To turn $10,000 into $1 million, Palantir will need to increase in value 100-fold. Today, the company is worth about $300 billion. That means it needs to be worth $30 trillion in 2035. Keep in mind, the most valuable companies today are worth $3 trillion. So, $30 trillion is a big ask. Further working against Palantir is its current valuation. The stock currently trades for a price-to-sales ratio exceeding 100. Even on a forward-looking basis, the price is more than 75 times expected sales. Likewise, Palantir’s enterprise-value-to-EBITDA multiple is extraordinarily high at about 160 times forward estimates. By comparison, Salesforce trades for 7.5 times sales and about 25 times EBITDA. It’s unlikely Palantir will be able to maintain that valuation as it grows larger. High expectations are already baked into the stock. Hence, when management raised its full-year revenue outlook by 4 percentage points earlier this month, the stock actually fell. Even if Palantir maintains its outrageously high valuation multiple next decade, its growth won’t be enough to turn $10,000 into $1 million. If its valuation comes down to Salesforce levels, it might be worth double its current value in 10 years, and that’s based on a relatively bullish outlook for the business. Doubling your investment in 10 years would translate to a compound annual return of just 7.2% over the next decade, which is below the S&P 500’s historic average. That’s probably not what Palantir investors are looking for. So, not only is Palantir unlikely to turn $10,000 into $1 million over the next decade, it might even underperform the market. And that’s almost entirely due to its extremely high valuation today. Djed Spence: ‘Relaxed’ star’s journey from Spurs outcast to key man Djed Spence: ‘Relaxed’ star’s journey from Spurs outcast to key man Spence has international experience, playing six times for the under-21s after being given his debut by Lee Carsley in March 2022 against Albania. Carsley wanted to take Spence to the European Championship in 2023, where the England under-21s triumphed by beating Spain in the final but injury ruled him out of the tournament. To Carsley, Spence’s rise to prominence is no surprise. “I love Djed. I think he’s such a good player,” Carsley told BBC Sport. “So exciting, so attacking, athletic, a quiet guy but humble. “He’s got so many attributes, the way he can drive and dribble with the ball, score, create, defend. He’s a player that there’s no ceiling where he could go. “I think he just needs to keep being confident in himself. Like a lot of the players, they need that opportunity and they need that support. It’s great to watch him now because he’s doing so well.” With Spence finding regular club minutes hard to come by, a series of loans around Europe, at Rennes, Leeds and Genoa followed but they yielded mixed results. But according to Scott, that could have been the making of him, adding: “He’s had his loans and he’s probably learned a lot from them.” Carsley agreed, adding: “It’s sometimes easy to go out on loan and do your developing away from the club. But it looks like he’s definitely found his feet.” Source link #Djed #Spence #Relaxed #stars #journey #Spurs #outcast #key #man Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

The ***** price of $225,000 in cash and $225,000 in Trigg shares provides EV with continued exposure to the project through its newly acquired shareholding in Trigg. EV has agreed to sell its 100 per cent owned subsidiary company Monomatapa Investments, which holds 49 unpatented claims over the 980-acre Coyote Creek project. The $225,000 parcel of Trigg shares will be issued at the completion of the *****, based on the 15-day volume-weighted average price of the shares immediately prior to the date of the transaction announcement. A further $450,000 in cash or Trigg shares, at Trigg’s election, are to be issued to EV on a JORC compliant resource estimate being delivered within four years from transaction completion, expected to occur 20 days after executing the agreement. The deemed share issue price will be the greater of the 15-day VWAP of Trigg shares or 3 cents. EV Resources instigated its purchase of Coyote Creek in April by issuing $125,000 of its shares and refunding fees paid to the Bureau of Land Management and the local Garfield county by the investor, totalling about US$16,000 (A$25,000). The company says it remains committed to its Americas-focussed antimony strategy, incorporating open pit mining opportunities, with its Trigg shareholding and its proposed acquisition of 70 per cent of the Los Lirios open pit antimony mine in Oaxaca state in southern Mexico. The United States currently imports all of its antimony concentrates. Recent US government initiatives to fast-track critical minerals projects, considered to represent strategic importance to the US, may help pave the way for the project to move into production sooner than anticipated if sufficient resources are unearthed. The project comes with a historical non-JORC resource of 12.7 million tonnes at 0.79 per cent antimony. The ***** of Coyote Creek is in step with the company’s recent focus on reducing its expenditure by selling non-core assets. It recently announced the ***** of its La Cienega copper project in the US state of Arizona to fellow ASX-listed explorer Magnum Mining and Exploration. EV says the deal will include a 2 per cent net smelter return (NSR) royalty on any future copper production at the project, allowing the company to retain exposure to any upside in the US copper project. In the wake of China’s critical minerals export bans over the past two years, critical minerals such as antimony have seen huge price increases as future supply concerns push demand. EV will likely use the profits from the ***** of Coyote Creek and freed-up funds from the La Cienega ***** to quickly progress the recently acquired Los Lirios project in Oaxaca, Mexico, which is shaping up as a source of potential near-term cashflows. The company acquired 70 per cent of the past-producing Los Lirios antimony mine, which encompasses 1652 hectares of antimony-rich historic open pits and underground workings. Previous production from Los Lirios concentrated on antimony ore at direct shipping ore grades. Two grab samples from the Los Lirios 3 open pit returned antimony assays of 62 per cent and 62.99 per cent, respectively. The South American focused explorer holds a 70 per cent interest in the Parag project in Peru, a bulk-scale porphyry with its copper-molybdenum-silver deposit beginning from surface. Copper porphyries account for nearly 70 per cent of the world’s copper as they can offer a huge scale of mineralisation. EV also holds 50 per cent of the drill-permitted Don Enrique copper-silver project in Peru, which has several compelling targets and access to water, power, roads and labour from nearby towns. The company is slimming down its portfolio of total projects, while focusing on fattening up its core projects, such as Parag and Los Lirios, that remain in its grasp. 21. Final Fantasy 11 was going to shut down last year but fans have kept it alive, director says Final Fantasy 11 was going to shut down last year but fans have kept it alive, director says The director of Final Fantasy 11 says the game was planned to end last year (and possibly shut down altogether) but fan support has kept it alive. Final Fantasy 11 was originally released on PS2 and PC in Japan in 2002, before coming to North America and Europe in the following years. In 2006 the game also received an Xbox 360 port. Servers for the Xbox 360 and PS2 versions ended in 2016, but the PC version remains playable to this day. In an interview with Dengeki Online (via Automaton) the game’s current director Yoji Fujito said that before the game’s 20th anniversary in 2022, Square Enix had already been preparing for potentially ending support for the PC version in 2024, after the game’s Voracious Resurgence storyline ended. “There was a real possibility that 2024 would be the year updates would come to an end, with the game shifting into a so-called maintenance mode, where only system upkeep would be performed,” Fujito said. The publisher even considered shutting down the game entirely, given that the game’s servers were reaching their end of life. Instead, because players continued to log into the game – which has had the same monthly subscription fee of $11.95 since its 2002 launch – and showed the development team “a lot of support”, it was decided that the game would continue. “We thought, if The Voracious Resurgence wrapped up and FFXI clearly started losing its momentum, then maybe we really should prepare to end it,” Fujito explained. “But that didn’t happen. I took this as a sign that we should keep running the game.” Instead of closing down a game that originally launched on PS2, then, Square Enix announced on Friday that it was bringing a new batch of updates to the game, including a new high-tier mission battlefield, gamepad configuration adjustments, a new Morale gauge, the ability to change a character’s race and new content for the Limbus battle system. Last year Final Fantasy 14, which is also an MMO, introduced a crossover Alliance Raid series which sees players travelling to Vana’diel, the land where Final Fantasy 11 is set. 22. Warren Buffett Buys a Dividend Stock Up 4,400% in 15 Years, but Sends Wall Street a $348 Billion Warning Warren Buffett Buys a Dividend Stock Up 4,400% in 15 Years, but Sends Wall Street a $348 Billion Warning Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway reported a record $348 billion in cash and Treasury bills on its balance sheet in March, a warning to Wall Street that stocks are still expensive. Berkshire in the first quarter added to its position in Domino’s Pizza, a company that ranks as the world leader in pizza sales due consistent technology and menu innovation. Domino’s has increased its dividend for 12 straight years and the payout climbed 17% annually over the last five years, but the stock still trades at an expensive valuation. 10 stocks we like better than Domino’s Pizza › In 1965, Warren Buffett took control of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.A) (NYSE: BRK.B). Its stock price has since increased at 20% annually, while the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) has returned about 10% annually. That outperformance was due in large part to Buffett’s brilliant decision-making with respect to stock purchases, acquisitions, and share buybacks. Consequently, Buffett has earned a reputation as one of the greatest investors in American history. Yet, he has struggled to find buying opportunities in recent years. Berkshire reported a record $348 billion in cash and U.S. Treasury bills on its balance sheet in the first quarter. That is surprising because the S&P 500 fell into correction territory in March, but Berkshire kept building cash. The most obvious explanation is Buffett considered most stocks too expensive despite the drawdown. In that sense, he sent Wall Street a $348 billion warning: Stocks could fall further as tariffs and economic uncertainty weigh on the market. However, Berkshire did invest some money in the first quarter. It added to its position in Domino’s Pizza (NASDAQ: DPZ), a dividend stock that returned 4,400% over the last 15 years. Here’s what investors should know. Image source: Getty Images. Domino’s is the largest pizza company in the world, a position it earned by focusing on value and innovation. For instance, the company streamlined its supply chain in recent years by moving dough production to central facilities equipped with robots. That not only drives cost savings, but it also keeps the customer experience consistent across different stores. Also, Domino’s is on the cutting edge of restaurant technology with anywhere ordering and pinpoint delivery, which let customers place orders through unusual channels like text message, and receive those orders in atypical locations like beaches and baseball parks. The company also uses artificial intelligence to anticipate online orders to speed up the pizza-making process, visually inspect orders for accuracy and quality, and surface insights from customer comments left on social media. Story Continues Beyond that, Domino’s consistently and effectively uses promotional cycles and menu innovation to engage consumers. It has already run several deals this year featuring 50% discounts, and recently added parmesan stuffed crust pizza to its menu. CEO Russell Weiner said those promotions “broke through industry clutter,” and he expects stuffed crust to drive market shares gains for the company. In addition, the company last year partnered with Uber Eats and this year partnered with DoorDash to expand its reach. Domino’s will still handle its own delivery, keeping control over every aspect of its supply chain. But Uber and DoorDash are the two biggest restaurant food ordering platforms in the U.S., which means they could be a significant source of demand. Domino’s reported mixed financial results in the first quarter. Revenue increased 2.5% to $1.1 billion, which missed the consensus estimate by about $20 million. However, GAAP earnings increased 21% to $4.33 per diluted share, ahead of the $4.07 per diluted share that Wall Street anticipated. The company’s same-store sales in the U.S. fell 0.5% because of challenging economic conditions. But the company still beat competitors Pizza Hut (owned by Yum! Brands) and Papa John’s, which saw same-store sales fall of 5% and 3%, respectively. That marks the sixth straight quarter where Domino’s has outshone its largest rivals, which is evidence that innovation and promotions are indeed driving market share gains. The company currently pays a quarterly dividend of $1.74 per share, which equates to a dividend yield of 1.4% at the current share price of $493. But Domino’s has increased the payout for 12 consecutive years and the dividend has grown at 17% annually over the past five years. That makes the stock a reasonably attractive idea for passive income investors. However, Wall Street expects the company’s earnings to increase at 6% annually through 2026. That makes the current valuation of 28 times earnings look rather expensive. Domino’s is a good business that pays a healthy dividend. But I think prospective investors should wait for a cheaper entry point before buying shares. 23. Pokémon ****** Bolt and White Flare will reportedly face shortages as Pokémon ‘catches up’ with older sets Pokémon ****** Bolt and White Flare will reportedly face shortages as Pokémon ‘catches up’ with older sets The next expansion to the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Pokémon ****** Bolt and White Flare, will reportedly face shortages at launch as The Pokémon Company attempts to catch up on older sets. Interest in the Pokémon Trading Card Game has exploded since late last year. New sets, which are released every few months, are facing massive stock shortages worldwide, and exclusive items from these sets are being scalped (bought for the sole purpose of selling them above RRP) widely. The Pokémon Company has said that it is at maximum printing capacity as it attempts to meet demand, but it’s now been claimed that Pokémon’s next set, Pokémon ****** Bolt and White Flare, will also face issues as The Pokémon Company tries to catch up. According to Pokebeach, speaking to distributors who provide Pokémon Trading Card Game products to stores, ****** Bolt and White Flare will see severe shortages at launch, with many stores receiving no products at all from the new set. According to the distributors, The Pokémon Company is focusing on older, in-demand products, such as Pokémon Surging Sparks and Pokémon Prismatic Evolution. Pokémon Trading Card Game sets are typically printed for two years, meaning that eventually most players will be able to obtain products in the Pokémon ****** Bolt and White Flare set easily. Pokémon ****** Bolt and Pokémon White Flare will be the English Pokémon TCG’s first-ever dual set when they release in July. The set will feature all 156 Unova Pokémon and will introduce a brand-new rarity. Earlier this year, The Pokémon Company released a statement addressing multiple fan reports that trading cards have been difficult to find, saying that it’s printing as many cards as possible and working to replenish stock at retailers as quickly as it is able to. “We’re aware that some fans are experiencing difficulties purchasing certain Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) products due to very high demand impacting availability,” the statement reads. “We understand this inconvenience can be disappointing for fans, and we are actively working to print more of the impacted Pokémon TCG products as quickly as possible and at maximum capacity to acknowledge this. Reprinted products are expected to be available at participating retailers as soon as possible.” Source link #Pokémon #****** #Bolt #White #Flare #reportedly #face #shortages #Pokémon #catches #older #sets Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
