  1. Google NotebookLM App for Android and iOS Launched, Comes With Audio Overviews Feature Google NotebookLM App for Android and iOS Launched, Comes With Audio Overviews Feature Google launched the standalone app for NotebookLM on both Android and iOS on Monday. Earlier this month, the Mountain View-based tech giant listed the app on both Google Play and the App Store and allowed users to pre-register for it. Nearly three weeks later, the app is now available on both operating systems and carries several of the core features of the website version. While there are some limitations in adding sources to a notebook, the company has added the Audio Overviews feature to the app. NotebookLM App Lets Users Download Audio Overviews Those users who had pre-registered for the NotebookLM app on Android and iOS received a message on Monday highlighting that the app was available and was being installed on their device. Google also announced the launch of the app in a blog post, stating that the app’s first iteration includes many of the platform’s core features, and other features will be added in the coming months. The home page of the NotebookLM app shows the list of notebooks. Based on the sources added, the app automatically assigns an emoji to the notebook, and users can also rename it. Currently, users can add PDFs, website URLs, YouTube links, and copied text. Some of the options available on the website, such as audio files, markdown text, Google Docs, and Slides, are not available on the app at this time. However, the most popular feature of the platform — Audio Overviews — is available in the app. After entering a notebook, users can tap on the Studio option on the bottom right to generate an artificial intelligence (AI) audio discussion based on the sources. Gadgets 360 staff members were able to test the feature, and it takes a couple of minutes to generate an audio file. Normally, playing an Audio Overview requires active Internet connectivity, but if users download the file, they can also listen to it offline. Additionally, the interactive feature that lets users “join” the audio discussion to ask a question to the AI hosts is also available on the app. Other notable features include topic summarisation and chatting with the AI to ask questions about the topic. Currently, features such as study guide generation and MindMap are not available on the app. While the NotebookLM app is free to use, there is a paid subscription that gives access to more notebooks, sources per notebook, and Audio Overviews. Access to NotebookLM Plus is currently tied to the Google One AI Premium subscription that costs Rs. 1,950 per month. 2. Drake pushes for Tory Lanez to be pardoned after prison attack Drake pushes for Tory Lanez to be pardoned after prison attack Rapper Drake has shared a petition asking California’s governor to pardon fellow ********* rapper Tory Lanez, who was attacked last week in prison. “Come home soon,” Drake wrote on his Instagram story with a link to the petition. Lanez was stabbed 14 times by a fellow inmate in a California prison last week, an attack that caused both of his lungs to collapse. He was rushed to a hospital and is expected to recover. Lanez, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, is serving a 10-year prison sentence for shooting another musician, Megan Thee Stallion, in 2020. The prison attack happened around 07:20 local time (15:20 GMT) on 12 May, said Pedro Calderón Michel of the state’s corrections department. Staff began first aid before Lanez, 32, was taken to a local medical facility for further treatment, he said. A post on Lanez’s Instagram said he was stabbed in the back, torso, head and face and had to be temporarily placed on a breathing apparatus. He is now able to breathe on his own. “Despite being in pain, he is talking normally, in good spirits, and deeply thankful to God that he is pulling through,” the post said. The prisoner suspected of the attack, Santino Casio, 41, is serving a life sentence for second-degree ******* and other violent offences, officials told the BBC. They said he has been placed in “restricted housing” pending an investigation. Casio arrived at the Tehachapi institution in February 2004, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), and has received additional sentences for assaulting a fellow prisoner in 2008 and for possessing a deadly weapon in 2018. Lanez was convicted of shooting Megan Thee Stallion, whose legal name is Megan Pete, as they were leaving a 2020 pool party at reality star Kylie Jenner’s Hollywood mansion. The case divided the hip-hop world, with rappers – including 50 Cent and Iggy Azalea – appearing to take sides in the conflict and some asking the court for leniency at Lanez’s sentencing. Drake’s song Circo Loco, a collaboration with 21 Savage, appeared to reference the case and imply that Megan lied about being shot. Megan, in turn, accused Drake of making jokes about assaulting a woman. The petition shared by Drake now has about 270,000 signatures calling on Gov Gavin Newsom to grant Lanez a “full pardon”. The Change.org petition, created by the Caldwell Institute for Public Safety, also points to arguments questioning both evidence and witness accounts in the case. Newsom has not commented on the request. Lanez had seven US top 10 albums in the seven years before his conviction. He has teased the release of a new album from prison titled Peterson. 4. 4 Stocks Performing Better than Big Tech 4 Stocks Performing Better than Big Tech When investing in the stock market, it is worthwhile to have a view of the overall market to get a better sense of what is happening. Hence, the SmartReversals site has a fundamental analysis library with over 40 companies listed in the , to help capture opportunities. After the recent bear market, (or the recent lows if you prefer), several companies are bouncing faster than most of the Magnificent Seven (Alphabet (NASDAQ:), Amazon (NASDAQ:), Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:), Tesla (NASDAQ:), NVIDIA (NASDAQ:), and Apple (NASDAQ:). Microsoft (NASDAQ:) is the one outperforming), which is why the Weekly Compass includes Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ:) and Netflix (NASDAQ:) in addition to the seven tech giants. Today, I will dedicate this publication to analyzing four companies that are bouncing or breaking out in a way that is worth watching. If you like this open-access publication, please like and repost it; even the heart sign in an email works as a like for Substack, where the SmartReversals’ site is hosted. Let’s begin. CrowdStrike Holdings, Inc. is an American cybersecurity technology company that has become a prominent name in protecting organizations against modern cyber threats. Founded in 2011, it is headquartered in Austin, Texas. At its core, CrowdStrike is known for its Falcon platform, which is a cloud-native endpoint protection solution. 1. CrowdStrike: Securing the Digital Frontier and Defining the Future of Cybersecurity CrowdStrike Holdings (NASDAQ:) is shaping the landscape of modern cybersecurity. The digital world is expanding at an unprecedented rate, and with it, the attack surface for malicious actors. Cybersecurity is no longer a niche IT concern but a fundamental pillar of business resilience, national security, and individual safety. In this high-stakes environment, CrowdStrike has emerged as a recognized leader, primarily through its groundbreaking Falcon platform. This cloud-native platform offers a comprehensive suite of solutions protecting endpoints, cloud workloads, identities, and data, making it an indispensable tool for organizations navigating the complexities of the modern threat landscape. The company’s strategic importance is further highlighted by its consistent financial momentum. For its first quarter of fiscal year 2025 (ended April 30, 2024), CrowdStrike reported total revenue of $921.0 million, a 33% increase year-over-year, with Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) growing 33% to reach $3.65 billion. This robust growth, coupled with record operating and free cash flow, demonstrates strong market adoption and customer trust in CrowdStrike’s capabilities. Customers are increasingly standardizing on the Falcon platform, evidenced by high module adoption rates—as of Q1 FY25, 65% of customers used five or more modules, showcasing the platform’s depth and stickiness. Navigating the Evolving Threat Landscape with Innovation Recent strategic initiatives underscore CrowdStrike’s commitment to growth and market leadership. The Falcon Flex (NASDAQ:) licensing model offers customers greater adaptability, while expanded partner programs aim to accelerate ecosystem success. Furthermore, achieving FedRAMP High certification opens significant opportunities within the U.S. federal government sector, a critical area for cybersecurity enhancement. Even recent operational adjustments, such as a targeted reduction in workforce in May 2025, were framed as part of a broader strategy to scale the business efficiently towards a $10 billion ARR goal, while continuing to invest in customer-facing and product-engineering roles. Charting a Dominant Future in Cybersecurity The future for CrowdStrike appears bright, driven by several key factors. The overall cybersecurity market continues to expand rapidly, with CrowdStrike estimating its Total Addressable Market (TAM) to reach $116 billion in 2025 and potentially $250 billion by 2029. This vast market provides ample runway for growth. Innovation remains central to CrowdStrike’s strategy. The continuous development of its AI-powered platform, including next-generation SIEM, cloud security, and identity protection—which collectively surpassed $1.3 billion in ending ARR as of Q4 FY25—positions the company to address the most pressing security challenges. Technical Analysis The Stock retraced once the upper Bollinger Band was breached in February, the pullback found support in the lower one, bouncing creating a potential cup with handle formation that as of today recovered the annual $435.3 level. Considering that the higher band is widening, clearing the space for more upside, and the fundamentals are promising, $515.6 is a reasonable price target for the coming months. The Stochastic curling down makes perfect sense with “the handle” of the cup that has formed so far. A buying opportunity at a lower price may or may not come, but for now the fundamentals and technicals support upside. $431 is the level that if lost, a pullback could be considered in progress. Founded in 2012, the company provides a sophisticated infrastructure for modern data management and analytics. Snowflake’s Q4 Performance Signals Stability and Potential Acceleration, Underpinned by Core Platform Strengths Snowflake reported a solid fourth quarter, with financial results and an operational outlook suggesting sustained momentum as the company progresses into Fiscal Year 2026. This performance offers a current snapshot of its market standing, which is deeply rooted in the architecture and capabilities of its Data Cloud platform. Key highlights from recent financial disclosures indicate that Q4 product revenue grew by 28%, surpassing the guided 23% and marking a 4% beat. This robust performance was primarily driven by healthy consumption within Snowflake’s core data warehouse business. The European market performed better than anticipated, indicating effective execution despite ongoing regional challenges. Net revenue retention (NRR) showed signs of stabilization, reported at 126% in Q4, a slight deceleration of 1% from the third quarter. Expectations are for NRR to remain in the mid-120s. While total new customer additions grew by 9% quarter-over-quarter, these were predominantly smaller accounts. A lower number of Global 2000 (G2K) wins, at three, was observed, potentially signaling a maturation in the cloud data warehouse adoption cycle among the largest enterprises. The newer Snowpark data engineering offering contributed 3% to total revenue, aligning with expectations. At the heart of Snowflake’s offering is a cloud-native architecture designed to address the evolving data needs of contemporary enterprises. A distinguishing feature is its multi-cloud interoperability, enabling operations across prominent cloud environments including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). This capability affords organizations considerable architectural flexibility and mitigates risks associated with single-provider dependency. Key to Snowflake’s design is the architectural separation of data storage and compute resources. This model allows for independent and elastic scaling of each component, facilitating cost optimization through a consumption-based pricing model while maintaining performance across a wide range of concurrent workloads and user demands. The Snowflake platform supports a diverse spectrum of unified data workloads, empowering organizations to consolidate disparate data sources into a coherent and accessible repository. These supported workloads include: Data Warehousing: Enabling robust analytical processing and business intelligence functions. Data Engineering: Facilitating the construction and management of complex data pipelines. Data Science & Machine Learning (ML): Providing an environment for the development and operationalization of advanced predictive models. Data Applications: Supporting the creation and deployment of applications that are intrinsically data-reliant. Secure Data Sharing: Offering capabilities for governed, real-time data collaboration across internal departments and with external entities, obviating traditional data extraction and loading complexities. Cybersecurity Data Applications: Serving as a security data lake, allowing for the aggregation and analysis of security-related data to enhance threat detection, investigation, and response capabilities. By enabling the integration of these varied workloads onto a singular platform, Snowflake facilitates the de-siloing of data. This allows organizations to extract more profound insights, develop innovative data-centric applications, and explore new avenues for data collaboration and value creation. Technical Analysis This stock is far from its all time highs, and right now is finding resistance at a bearish diagonal that I will allow to be described better by the 200 weekly average, an uncommon line in my charts, but clear enough to highlight that a breakout of the current price zone would clear the pathway to $228.5 at the very least in the coming months. The latest weekly candle suggests indecision but the oscillator is not yet overbought, so let’s use $180.5 as a central weekly level to validate a pullback towards $168. 3. ServiceNow ServiceNow (NYSE:) stands as a prominent enterprise software company, delivering a comprehensive cloud-based platform designed to streamline and automate a wide array of business processes across organizations. Founded in 2003, the company has evolved from its strong roots in IT service management to become a critical enabler of digital transformation for enterprises globally. Its core offering, the Now Platform, functions as a versatile “System of Action,” adept at orchestrating workflows and connecting disparate systems to enhance operational efficiency and user experiences. ServiceNow Aims to be Enterprise AI Operating System, Bolstered by New AI Innovations Recent strategic announcements from ServiceNow underscore its ambition to become the AI operating system for enterprise AI, introducing innovations designed to significantly enhance its platform capabilities. A significant development is the debut of AI Agent Fabric, slated for general availability in the third calendar quarter of 2025. This new capability leverages Model Context Protocol (MCP) and Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol to enable seamless connection and orchestration between thousands of native ServiceNow AI agents and third-party agents. By extending AI Agent Orchestration to this fabric, the system can assemble and coordinate diverse AI agents across various platforms to collaboratively address complex tasks. Key initial integrations include major enterprise software vendors like Adobe (NASDAQ:), Cisco (NASDAQ:), Google Cloud, and Microsoft. For example, an integration with Cisco AI Defense aims to help security teams rapidly translate threat detection into actionable, automated security workflows. Further strengthening its AI governance and management capabilities, ServiceNow launched the AI Control Tower. This tool is designed to provide enterprises with comprehensive AI visibility, embedded compliance and governance, lifecycle management for AI agents, and real-time reporting on AI performance. The AI Control Tower is built upon ServiceNow’s robust Configuration Management Database (CMDB), which will also capture agentic operation data for future AI training and learning. Additionally, the company has broadened its interoperability by integrating with a range of new third-party Large Language Models (LLMs), including Google Gemini, OpenAI GPT, and Anthropic Claude, offering customers more flexibility in assigning specific LLMs to different agents and tasks—an expansion from supporting only Mistral AI a year ago. Beyond the traditional confines of IT, ServiceNow has significantly expanded its reach, offering a multitude of applications that automate and simplify self-service-related processes across various business units. For instance, its Employee Workflows streamline human resources functions like employee onboarding, inquiries, and transitions. Similarly, Customer Workflows aim to enhance customer service management by automating case management and improving engagement. The platform also addresses needs in areas such as facilities management and provides sophisticated tools for governance, risk, and compliance (GRC), ensuring that organizations can manage these critical functions with greater cohesion and automation. Technical Analysis: It’s too early to consider a weekly doji since the chart was devised today, but the Stochastic RSI and Williams%R both suggest that it’s time for a pullback. The stock presents clear changes in the trend when the 5 and 10 weekly moving averages are breached, so managing risk this week considering $1,019 as the reference to validate a pullback can protect investors from some pain to $993 or even $887 where the 10MA sits today. If the pullback is confirmed an the price bounces from $959, there could be a good likelihood to reach $1,280 in 2025. 4. Robinhood Markets Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ:) is a U.S.-based financial services company known for pioneering commission-free trading of stocks, ETFs, options, and cryptocurrencies through its online and mobile brokerage platform. The company primarily targets retail investors, with a focus on attracting a younger demographic and those underserved by traditional wealth management firms. Robinhood’s business model largely relies on generating revenue through payment for order flow, where it receives rebates from market makers for directing client trades, rather than charging direct commissions on trades. This approach allowed it to significantly undercut established competitors and rapidly expand its user base. As Robinhood navigates 2025, its strategic evolution hinges significantly on two key initiatives aimed at broadening its market penetration and deepening customer relationships: the expansion of its “Legend” platform for active traders and the keenly anticipated launch of a digital private banking service. The “Legend” platform, which began its rollout in late 2024, represents Robinhood’s determined push into the competitive active trader demographic. By mid-2025, the industry is closely observing the platform’s traction against established giants like Interactive Brokers (NASDAQ:) and Charles Schwab (NYSE:). Robinhood’s strategy with Legend centers on leveraging its modern, agile technology stack to offer superior execution speed, advanced charting tools, and dedicated customer support—areas critical for sophisticated traders. The ongoing enhancements, including the integration of more crypto assets and index options, signal a commitment to closing feature gaps. Simultaneously, the financial community is keenly awaiting Robinhood’s foray into the high-net-worth (HNW) segment with its distinct digital private banking offering, slated for launch in the second half of 2025. This initiative is more than just a product extension; it’s a strategic imperative. As Robinhood’s initial cohort of younger users matures and accumulates wealth, providing sophisticated wealth management services becomes essential for client retention and asset growth. By aiming to deliver a digitally native service akin to the high-touch approach of institutions like the former First Republic, Robinhood is signaling its intent to challenge traditional wealth management paradigms. These focused endeavors in 2025 illustrate Robinhood’s evolving strategy: to not only serve as an entry point for new investors but also to grow with them, while simultaneously attracting more sophisticated market participants. The successful execution of these plans will be critical in solidifying its position as a more comprehensive and competitive financial services provider. Technical Analysis The promising context for the company is aligned with a chart that is also suggesting a breakout, surpassing $64.5 would validate the bullish thesis targeting $85 during 2025. The bullish MACD crossover suggests a multi-week bull leg. SPX: The Market Today The Strength in the Rally is Impressive: The market reaction was notably different compared to previous U.S. debt credit downgrades. With precision, the $5,901 set as central level last Friday acted as support zone today (the low was slightly below that line, hence the importance of setting stops below the exact level, or being patient waiting for the 2H candles to be closed), and a reversal is unlikely until that level is breached. Anyway, I am paying attention to the upper Bollinger Band, which is curling downward, similar to patterns observed before previous healthy pullbacks. You know my bullish stance mid-term expecting a healthy pullback in the short term, which is still very soon to state it has been called off. The Volatility index bounced and retraced quickly today, but anyway it missed reaching 21.8 to close the gap, so the pathway for further upside in the S&P500 is not completely cleared, and prudence is key. If there is a bullish continuation tomorrow, I’d pay attention to the RSI, which is nearing 70, the level from where the oscillator becomes overbought and from where more caution will be advised. 5. Aguia drill rigs roll in Colombia to chase gold bonanza Aguia drill rigs roll in Colombia to chase gold bonanza Aguia Resources has fired up the diamond rigs at its high-grade Santa Barbara gold project in Colombia with a 25-hole, 2500-metre program designed to unlock a potentially huge discovery in the system’s rich mesothermal vein network. The company will also pepper the existing stockwork to clear a path for expanded underground production and set the stage for a maiden JORC resource towards the end of the year. Definition drilling will follow up on known mineralised zones at the Santa Barbara and Mariana workings, some already with shallow underground access. The company says the holes will typically be less than 100m deep and chase the Santa Barbara main vein and an associated structure known as Vein Two. Deeper holes will then test the system’s downdip potential. Aguia says confirmation of both grade and continuity at depth and along strike is the first item on its wish list, which will underpin its resource modelling and development plans. The rig will then push deeper into discovery mode, shifting the focus to a broader exploration blitz across a 7-kilometre stretch of mapped surface veins. The hunt is on to uncover repetitions and extensions of Santa Barbara’s main mineralised structures – and if the bit hits paydirt, Aguia could be staring down a geological jackpot. The program is being guided by an in-house 3D structural model that has already hinted at a northerly trending domino-style fault system, which likely offsets and repeats the high-grade veins. The model has proven its worth, with artisanal workings turning up exactly where the geologists predicted and opening up a promising new southwest extension of the system. Aguia’s Santa Barbara vein system appears to be shaping up as a potential standout in Colombia’s gold scene, showing striking similarities to big-name deposits, such as Segovia and Buriticá. All three are mesothermal systems known for high-grade gold and silver and Santa Barbara is already mirroring the other two in vein structure and gold-silver grade potential. When *********-based Continental Gold released its resource at Buriticá in 2011, it unveiled 3.1 million ounces of gold and 11M ounces of silver from just 14 veins in the Yaraguá zone. In some instances, the veins were as narrow as 3 centimetres thick and often spaced less than 50m apart. In comparison, Aguia says Santa Barbara’s footprint and density already match that scale. Like Aguia today, Continental ran a low-tonnage pilot plant during early exploration at Buriticá – a mirror-image strategy that could hint at what could be in store for Santa Barbara. The company says drill pads have already been prepared and road access re-opened to the old timers’ mining sites. More rigs are set to mobilise when the results start flowing in. If the results fall into place, management believes the Santa Barbara play has the potential to turn from a modest start-up operation into a high-margin, multi-million-ounce prize. In March, the company released a geological assessment estimating a game-changing exploration target of 2M tonnes to 4Mt grading at 20-30 grams per tonne (g/t). We have always been confident in developing a small but highly profitable underground gold mine which is happening now following several months of recommissioning. The real speculative appeal comes from the possibility that we could be sitting on a large high-grade gold resource. The next two months promises to be very exciting. The past two months have been a busy time for Aguia at Santa Barbara, after it officially re-opened the mine with a first gold pour. Trial mining by the previous owners showed head grades of up to 24g/t gold and Aguia is seeing comparable results from its current operations. The underground workings have now been rehabilitated with a new ventilation system, upgraded electricals and an electrical locomotive. The processing plant has also been refurbished. It is capable of treating 30 tonnes per day (tpd) of ore and on its way to a 50tpd uplift by July, with the addition of a new primary crusher. Adding to the momentum, the company jumped a critical bureaucratic hurdle two weeks ago by locking in a full government nod to flog its gold domestically and internationally. Although approval was expected, the timing was not. With signed paperwork in hand, Aguia has been able to get on with gold sales and capture prices currently trading near all-time highs at $5000 per ounce. While Aguia has had its hands full reigniting the Santa Barbara gold project for early-stage cash flow, it has also been quietly laying the groundwork for a second revenue stream from organic phosphate production in southern Brazil. The company recently locked in a 10-year lease on a fully operational Dagoberto Barcelos plant, just 100km from its Três Estradas deposit. With a modest monthly fee and a one-off payment of $1.36 million, Aguia is forecasting first production by July. The plant, currently rated at 100,000 tonnes per annum, is in line for a few strategic upgrades that could triple its capacity and help the company close in on its original $22M annual EBITDA forecast. Initial feed will come from the Pampafos deposit, but drilling is already underway at nearby Mato Grande and Passo Feio to cut haulage costs and beef up margins. With a second plant on the radar and demand for organic fertilisers booming across Brazil, Aguia’s phosphate ambitions could soon match the excitement brewing at Santa Barbara. If all goes to plan, the next few months could be critical for Aguia. The prospect of two operating revenue streams and an exciting exploration drilling program chasing a massive gold windfall during booming yellow metal prices is likely to have punters focused on the news flow. It could also be the making of a junior explorer seeking to mature into a mid-tier miner. Is your ASX-listed company doing something interesting? To highlight just how slim the Infinix Hot 60 Pro+ is, the tipster has shared a side-by-side image of the device next to what appears to be a standard iPhone. When placed beside the iPhone model, the Hot 60 Pro+ looks much slimmer. The rumoured 5.9 mm thickness of Infinix Hot 60 Pro+ is nearly on par with Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Edge, which measures 5.8mm. If the latest leak turns out to be true, the Hot 60 Pro+ could set a new benchmark for ultra-thin curved display smartphones. Meanwhile, Apple is believed to launch its 5.5mm thin iPhone 17 Air in September. However, all these models could belong to different price brackets. Infinix unveiled the Hot 50 Pro+ last year with a 6.8mm thin design. Specifications of the Infinix Hot 60 Pro+ are likely to be an upgrade over the Infinix Hot 50 Pro+, which runs on a MediaTek Helio G100 SoC. The phone has a curved AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate and Gorilla Glass protection. It is backed by a 5,000mAh battery with 33W fast charging support. 12. Russian ballet maestro Yuri Grigorovich dies age 98 Russian ballet maestro Yuri Grigorovich dies age 98 Getty Images Yuri Grigorovich’s productions of Ivan the Terrible and Romeo and Juliet redefined Soviet ballet Acclaimed Russian ballet choreographer, Yuri Grigorovich, has died aged 98. Described as one of the greatest choreographers of the 20th century, he was artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet from 1964 to 1995, which he is said to have led with an iron fist. Grigorovich’s productions of the Stone Flower, Ivan the Terrible and Romeo and Juliet redefined Soviet ballet. Praised for revitalising male dance, he created parts for men demanding exceptional strength and artistry. Born in 1927, a decade after the Bolshevik Revolution, his work was steeped in the traditions of classical ballet. His uncle, Georgy Rozai, had studied under the legendary Vaslav Nijinsky and the young Grigorovich went on to dance as a soloist with the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad before turning to choreography. His departure from the Bolshoi in 1995, amid disputes over performers’ contracts, led to the first ever dancers’ strike at the theatre in its 200-year history. During a scheduled performance, a dancer emerged to inform the audience the show was cancelled, leaving a stunned silence. The Stone Flower was considered his most famous piece, accompanied by settings of a series of folk tales composed by Sergei Prokofiev Following the Soviet Union’s collapse, the Bolshoi faced instability. Grigorovich moved to Krasnodar to found a new ballet company. He returned to the Bolshoi in 2008 as a choreographer and ballet master. Grigorovich received top Soviet and Russian honours, including the titles People’s Artist of the USSR and Hero of Socialist Labour. His wife, renowned ballerina Natalia Bessmertnova, died in 2008. His death came on the same day as that of one of his most celebrated collaborators, dancer Yuri Vladimirov, aged 83. Valery Gergiev, head of the Bolshoi and Mariinsky theatres, told Izvestia newspaper that Grigorovich was “a legendary figure who will continue to command respect and admiration for decades to come”. 15. Stolen grave bust found in France after 37 years Stolen grave bust found in France after 37 years Getty Images Jim Morrison’s grave, which is located in Paris’s famous Père-Lachaise cemetery, has long attracted fans of the rock band. A memorial bust of American singer Jim Morrison that was stolen from his grave 37 years ago has been found by chance, according to French police. The statue of The Doors frontman was recovered in Paris during an investigation conducted by its financial and anti-corruption arm that was unrelated to the original theft, it said in a post on Instagram. Morrison’s grave has long been a site for fans of the rock band to pay their respects in an unusual way – graffiti sprawls across neighbouring gravestones in the poet’s corner of the famous Père-Lachaise cemetery, which also houses the tombs of Edith Piaf and Oscar Wilde. Little information has been released about the investigation and no suspects have been named in the theft of the statue of the singer, who died in 1971. The police made the discovery when looking into a case of fraud, a source close to the investigation told news agency Agence France-Presse. It is not clear if the bust will be put back on the grave, with the cemetery’s curator telling Le Figaro: “The police haven’t contacted us, so I don’t know whether the bust will be returned to us.” Croatian artist Mladen Mikulin carved the statue from white marble to mark the 10th anniversary of the singer’s death. But it disappeared in 1988, seven years after the bust was placed at the site. A picture released by the French police shows the statue’s mouth and nose missing, as they had been before it was stolen. The bust disappeared from the grave in 1988, seven years after it was placed to mark the 10th anniversary of his death. Speaking to Rolling Stone, a representative of the Morrison estate said it was “happy to hear the news” that the “piece of history” had been found, adding that Morrison’s family wanted it on the grave “so it’s gratifying to see that it’s been recovered”. This is not the first time the singer’s grave has been the source of controversy. On the 20th anniversary of his death fans rioted at his grave and had to be dispersed by police. Morrison was living in the Marais district of Paris when he died suddenly at the age of 27. He was found dead in the bath by his girlfriend, Pamela Courson. A doctor’s report stated the cause of death was heart failure aggravated by heavy drinking. Morrison, the son of a US Navy admiral, was born in 1943 in Florida. He formed The Doors with keyboardist Ray Manzarek in 1965 in Los Angeles The band name was inspired by Aldous Huxley’s The Doors of Perception, about the author’s drug use. Qantas Group, Virgin Australia reap sky-high profits off the back of limited competition, strong travel demand Qantas Group, Virgin Australia reap sky-high profits off the back of limited competition, strong travel demand Dwindling competition and record profits are clearing the way for an airline duopoly between Qantas and Virgin Australia, a new report has revealed. The *********** Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) latest domestic airline competition report notes Qantas and Virgin are ruling the skies off the back of strong financial results. Qantas recorded a whopping $1.5b in earnings for the first half of the 2025 financial year – $916m of that from its domestic operations, including its budget carrier Jetstar. Both carriers services 63.9 per cent of all passengers, the consumer watchdog found. Camera IconThe consumer watchdog revealed ***********’s aviation industry is dominated by two major players – Qantas and Virgin. NewsWire / Luis Enrique Ascui Credit: News Corp Australia It comes as Jetstar remains the only low-cost carrier in Australia since the collapse of Bonza and the closure of Tiger Air in 2020. Rex, which has reduced capacity on regional services following its administration, only carried 1.7 per cent of passengers. The airline reported a massive earnings surge of about 54 per cent between the first half of the 2024 and 2025 financial years. “The high half-yearly earnings reported by Qantas Group reflect its dominance of the domestic airline sector, with Qantas and Jetstar accounting for over 60 per cent of passengers,” ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey said. “Jetstar has been able to capitalise on the continued absence of competitive pressure from another low-cost carrier in the domestic market to increase its market share and operating margin.” Camera IconQantas’ low cost carrier Jetstar has recorded a massive earnings surge of about 54 per cent between the first half of the 2024 and 2025 financial years. NewsWire / Luis Enrique Ascui Credit: News Corp Australia Virgin Australia recorded a similar spike in earnings, achieving record profits across the first half of this financial year following its post-administration restructure under Bain Capital. Its half-year results are not publicly reported. Airfare prices remained the same and followed seasonal trends in the first quarter of 2025. Passenger demand took a hit off the back of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, but took back off again during April due to the school holidays, Easter and Anzac Day all following right after each other. The ACCC found April 17, 2025, the Thursday before Good Friday, was the busiest day for domestic travel in the past five years. Camera IconVirgin Australia saw a similar spike in earnings, achieving record profits across the first half of this financial year. NewsWire / Gaye Gerard Credit: News Corp Australia Qantas delivered its first dividend since 2019 earlier in the year, announcing it had paid 27,000 non-executive employees $1000 each as a “thank you payment” in December. “Our financial strength means we are now in a position to pay our shareholders dividends for the first time in almost six years,” Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson said at the time. However, the airline could be forced to pay more than $120m in penalties for illegally outsourcing more than 1800 ground workers during 2020. A three-day hearing in the High Court began on Monday to decide the penalty Qantas must pay for the ******** sacking – a decision the airline has admitted it was “in the wrong” for. Illustration of a coronal mass ejection from impacting Earth’s atmosphere. | Credit: Mark Garlick/Science Photo Library/Getty Images An extreme solar storm hit Earth some 14,300 years ago, more powerful than any other such event known in human history, a new analysis of radiocarbon data has revealed. The solar storm, the only known to have taken place in the last Ice Age, long eluded scientists as they lacked appropriate models for interpreting radiocarbon data from glacial climate conditions. But a new study by a team from the Oulu University in Finland has taken a stab at the measurement interpretation with eye-opening results. Using a novel chemistry-climate model, the team found that the marked spike in the carbon-14 isotope detected in fossilized tree rings was caused by a solar storm more than 500 times as powerful as the 2003 Halloween Solar Storm, which was the most intense in modern history. Solar storms generate major disruptions to Earth’s magnetic field and dump enormous quantities of charged particles into the planet’s atmosphere. These particles, mostly high-energy protons, boost the natural levels of carbon-14 — a radioactive isotope of carbon also known as radiocarbon. Carbon 14 is produced by interactions of nitrogen atoms in the atmosphere with cosmic rays. Scientists can use radiocarbon concentrations to date organic materials as the isotopes decay over time. In 2023, a major spike in radiocarbon concentrations in fossilized tree rings was discovered, indicating a major solar storm must have taken place as the last ice age was drawing to an end. The new study was finally able to precisely assess the magnitude of that solar storm and date it more accurately. The scientists believe that solar storm took place between January and April in the year 12,350 BC, likely dazzling the hundreds of thousands of mammoth hunters who lived in Europe at that time with the most awe-inspiring aurora borealis. “The ancient event in 12,350 BC is the only known extreme solar particle event outside of the Holocene epoch, the past approximately 12,000 years of stable warm climate,” Kseniia Golubenko, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oulu and lead author of the new study, said in a statement. “Our new model lifts the existing limitation to the Holocene and extends our ability to analyze radiocarbon data even for glacial climate conditions.” Scientists previously studied records of five other radiocarbon spikes found in tree ring data, which they attributed to powerful solar storms that had taken place in 994 AD, 775 AD, 663 BC, 5259 BC and 7176 BC. A coronal mass ejection as seen by NASA’s STEREO-A spacecraft in July 2023. | Credit: NASA/STEREO-A/SECCHI The strongest of these “Holocene” events was the 775 AD solar storm, which pummeled Earth at a time when Charles the Great reigned over the post-Roman Frankish empire in medieval Europe. Few written records have been preserved depicting that storm, but historians found hits of it in ancient ******** and Anglo-Saxon chronicles. The recently analyzed storm of 12,350 BC was even stronger, having deposited about 18% more charged particles into the atmosphere, the study reveals. The scope of these enormous solar storms is important to understand for technology experts in the 21st century, which is much more vulnerable to the whims of the sun due to society’s dependence on electronic systems and space technologies. “This event establishes a new worst-case scenario,” Golubenko said. “Understanding its scale is critical for evaluating the risks posed by future solar storms to modern infrastructure like satellites, power grids, and communication systems.” RELATED STORIES: — The US isn’t prepared for a big solar storm, exercise finds — It’s been one year since the most intense solar storm in decades created worldwide auroras. What have we learned? — Strongest solar flare of 2025 erupts from sun, sparking radio blackouts across Europe, Asia and the Middle East (video) Other solar storms in recent history show us just how much damage the sun’s outbursts can cause here on Earth. The 1859 Carrington Event took down telegraph wires all over the world. The Halloween Storm of 2003, which was ten times weaker, caused chaos in Earth’s orbit as satellites’ trajectories changed unpredictably in the atmosphere which was suddenly much more dense due to interactions with charged particles from the sun. The Gannon Storm of 2024, similar in strength to the Halloween Storm, raised concerns of space sustainability experts as it triggered a “mass migration of satellites” when thousands of spacecraft began firing their thrusters to make up for altitude loss caused by atmospheric density changes. A storm as ferocious as the one of 12,350 BC would likely cause complete mayhem if it were to strike Earth and its surrounding space today. 22. Who took ‘Napalm Girl’? World Press Photo ‘suspends’ attribution of historic Vietnam War image Who took ‘Napalm Girl’? World Press Photo ‘suspends’ attribution of historic Vietnam War image World Press Photo has cast fresh doubt over the authorship of “The Terror of War,” a picture better known as “Napalm Girl,” amid growing debate about one of the 20th century’s defining images. The organization, which named the image “Photo of the Year” in 1973, announced Friday that it has “suspended” its longstanding attribution to retired Associated Press (AP) photographer Nick Ut. An accompanying report said the “visual and technical” evidence “leans toward” an emerging theory that a Vietnamese freelance photographer, Nguyen Thanh Nghe, took the photo. It is the latest twist in a controversy sparked by “The *********,” a documentary that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January claiming Nghe, not Ut, captured the iconic photo of a naked girl fleeing a napalm attack during the Vietnam War. Nghe was one of more than a dozen people stationed at a highway checkpoint outside the village of Trang Bang on June 8, 1972, as 9-year-old Phan Thi Kim Phuc and other villagers were mistaken for the enemy and bombarded by the South Vietnamese air force. (A year later, Ut won the Pulitzer Prize for the picture.) The film contains allegations that Nghe sold his photo to the AP before editors intervened to credit Ut, who was the agency’s staff photographer in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) at the time. CNN could not independently assess the claims because the film’s producer, the VII Foundation, did not respond to multiple requests for a copy of the documentary, which has not yet been publicly released. Photographer Nguyen Than Nghe attending the “The *********” premiere during the 2025 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. – Maya Dehlin Spach/Getty Images Ut has since repeatedly dismissed allegations that he did not take the photo. A statement released on the Vietnamese American photographer’s behalf by his attorney, Jim Hornstein, called World Press Photo’s decision to suspend attribution “deplorable and unprofessional.” The statement added that Nghe’s claim is “unsupported by a scintilla of corroborating evidence or eyewitness.” Earlier this month, the AP published a 96-page report on the matter. The investigation — which was based on eyewitness interviews, examination of cameras, a 3D model of the scene and surviving photo negatives — found “no definitive evidence” to justify changing the attribution. While the agency acknowledged that the passage of time and absence of key evidence made it “impossible to fully prove” whether Ut took the photo, crediting Nghe would “require several leaps of faith.” But World Press Photo took a different stance, with executive director Joumana El Zein Khoury writing on the organization’s website that the “level of doubt is too significant to maintain the existing attribution.” “At the same time, lacking conclusive evidence pointing definitively to another photographer, we cannot reassign authorship either,” she continued, adding: “The suspension will remain in place unless further evidence can clearly confirm or refute the original authorship.” Citing the AP investigation and the documentary, which included visual analysis by Paris-based research group Index, World Press Photo said there are “substantial and credible reasons” to doubt the existing attribution. The organization’s report centers on several “unresolved issues,” including the camera used to take the photo and analyses of Ut’s position relative to the image’s vantage point. A reconstruction of the scene by Index, based on a “geo-based timeline,” suggested that Ut would have needed to have “taken the photo, run 60 meters (197 feet), and returned calmly, all within a brief window of time,” World Press Photo said. The organization described that scenario as “highly unlikely” though “not impossible.” The AP, meanwhile, has disputed the 60-meter figure, saying that Ut’s purported position on the highway — which is based on “shaky,” low-resolution footage filmed by a TV cameraman — could have been as little as 32.8 meters away from where the image was captured, and that the photographer “could have been in the position to have taken the shot.” The photograph’s subject Kim Phuc Phan Thi, who survived her injuries, poses with retired AP photographer Nick Ut in 2023. – Ezequiel Becerra/AFP/Getty Images World Press Photo also pointed to ongoing questions over equipment. The AP has previously said it is “likely” the photo was taken using a Pentax camera, which Nghe is known to have used. Ut, however, had frequently said he carried cameras by Leica and Nikon. When questioned for the AP’s investigation, Ut told the agency he also used Pentax cameras. The photo agency said it subsequently found negatives in its archives, shot by Ut in Vietnam, with “the characteristics of a Pentax camera.” World Press Photo also noted the possibility that another person altogether — Vietnamese military photographer Huynh Cong Phuc, who sometimes sold images to news agencies — took the photo. The AP’s investigation noted that he, like Ut and Nghe, “could have been in the position to have taken the shot.” Earlier this month, Ut welcomed the findings of the AP’s latest report, saying in a statement that it “showed what has always been known, that the credit for my photo … is correct.” He added: “This whole thing has been very difficult for me and has caused great pain.” Appearing in the world’s newspapers the day after it was taken, “The Terror of War” became a symbol of opposition to the Vietnam War. In the decades since, Ut has campaigned for peace alongside the photo’s subject, now known as Kim Phuc Phan Thi, who survived her injuries and was granted political asylum by Canada in 1992. Speaking to CNN to mark the image’s 50th anniversary in 2022, the photographer recounted his version of events, saying: “I saw Kim running and she (screamed in Vietnamese) ‘Too hot! Too hot!’ “When I took the photo of her, I saw that her body was burned so badly, and I wanted to help her right away. I put all my camera gear down on the highway and put water on her body.” Ut said he put the injured children in his van and drove them for 30 minutes to a nearby hospital. “When I went back to my office, the (dark room technician) and everyone who saw the picture told me right away it was very powerful, and that the photo would win a Pulitzer,” he added. In a statement emailed to CNN, the organizer of the Pulitzer Prizes said it “does not anticipate future action” regarding Ut’s award. “The Pulitzer Prizes depend on submitting news organizations to determine the authorship of their entries,” the statement read. “AP’s extensive review showed insufficient proof to withdraw credit.” This article was updated to include a statement from Pulitzer Prize organizers. At a press conference outside State Parliament on Tuesday, she signalled her support for a potential court challenge and accused Woodside shareholders of pursuing profits ahead of cultural preservation. “The shareholders of Woodside, I believe, are mainly overseas and all they want is money,” Ms Holmes a Court said. “They couldn’t care less about Indigenous art or climate change, they’re interested in their dividends.” She urged Mr Watt to visit the site of Murujuga rock art before making a final decision. “Woodside is dissolving and ruining this rock art, wanting to extend that vandalism for another 50 years” she said. Mr Cook has argued the case for gas as a transition fuel and said a balance is needed. “We know that this whole issue invites very passionate views on all sides of the debate,” he said. “We stand with them in wanting to protect the Burrup Peninsula . . . but we have the circumstances in front of us now that piece of infrastructure is incredibly important. “If we can maintain the Karratha gas plant that’s a much better way to go than shutting it down now and seeing other developments, other projects have to develop the same sort of infrastructure to make sure that we can enjoy the benefits of that gas.” Woodside says the North West Shelf extension is necessary to support thousands of jobs and WA’s future gas supply. Industry groups have warned any further delay, or a determination against the proposal, could deter investors. “Major project investment decisions are not taken lightly,” Chamber of Minerals and Energy WA chief executive Rebecca Tomkinson said. “There is significant upfront risk involved, and the ability to provide process and timeline certainty can be the difference between that capital being deployed here versus overseas.” The *********** Conservation Foundation, which is also meeting with Mr Watt, said oil and gas workers could find jobs elsewhere. “The oil and gas industry in WA adds fewer jobs per dollar of value added to the economy than any other industry in the State,” ACF climate campaigner Piper Rollins said. “If the WA Government was serious about jobs, they would be better off investing in Bunnings or Maccas.” Source link #Murray #Watt #pressure #Perth #groups #remain #North #West #Shelf #extension Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  25. Couple quit 9-to-5 to launch disability-led firm Couple quit 9-to-5 to launch disability-led firm When Imali Chislett set up a marketing agency in 2018, she never imagined it would turn into an award-winning champion of workplace inclusion. All she knew was, as a wheelchair user and living with chronic illness, the traditional workplace was not for her. Ms Chislett and her husband, Cameron, launched Bournemouth-based Inkfire, which claims to be the ***’s first disability-led marketing and tech agency. As part of its services, it has helped more than 200 businesses embed inclusivity into their operations. “I had some really terrible experiences, as did my husband, in the workplace,” said Ms Chislett. “We both realised that traditional nine-to-five working didn’t suit us. We knew we needed something different and tried to build jobs that worked for us. “In doing that, we had so many positive conversations where people said ‘we need this too’. “We didn’t fully perceive how far it would get at the beginning but it has developed and morphed into this incredible space that we have now.” The award recognises small organisations for their inclusive practices [Inkfire] Last month, Inkfire was named winner of the Inclusive Workplace Experience category at the Disability Smart Awards, hosted by the Business Disability Forum. The award recognises small organisations that value the health and wellbeing of workers and have inclusive practices. Ms Chislett said: “Our entire team have disabilities and chronic illnesses and everybody has lived experience, so we very much bring that knowledge to the table when we approach work. “It’s good to show businesses that this is what you can achieve. “Our message is, talk to people with disabilities, find out how you can help. “Don’t guess what somebody will need because we are here and more than happy to chat.” You can follow BBC Dorset on Facebook, X (Twitter), or Instagram.
