  1. Santander trying to get back in the groove Santander trying to get back in the groove TORONTO – Anthony Santander is trying to get back into the groove of hitting by finding his rhythm again. The struggling designated hitter belted a two-run homer in the fifth inning to lift the Toronto Blue Jays over the San Diego Padres 3-0 on Tuesday. It was Santander’s team-leading sixth home run of the season but his batting average remains below .200. “It’s kind of like you’re dancing with a pitcher, you’re trying to be nice and smooth,” said Santander. “You’re not jumping to the ball, you’re calm and you just let the ball get deep on you, and try to go straight to the button and react like I did on the pitch, on the homer.” Vladimir Guerrero Jr., also had a home run for Toronto (23-24) in the victory, moving he and Santander into a tie with Daulton Varsho for the most home runs on the Blue Jays. Story continues below advertisement Santander, however, has not been hitting for a good average. His 1 for 3 night against San Diego improved his batting average to .185 and his on-base plus slugging percentage to .592. Related Videos 2:22 Blue Jays fans skip out on Seattle series over U.S. trade war Previous Video Next Video A career .242 hitter with 161 home runs over nine seasons, Santander said that his struggles in his first season in Toronto are because he is still trying to rediscover that rhythm, a process made more difficult by opposing pitchers — obviously — trying to mess with his timing. They try to mess up your timing,” said Santander. “But when you have that rhythm, you’re ready to go at any time, you know? “That’s something that we practice before the game, and then you have to continue doing it so you can be ready at the first pitch.” Story continues below advertisement Right-fielder George Springer returned to the lineup after resting in Toronto’s 3-2 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Sunday. He batted cleanup, moving Santander to sixth in the lineup. Blue Jays manager John Schneider said that he’s confident that Santander will find his way again. “It’s trying to just take a little pressure off of him, you know?” said Schneider. “No matter where you hit a guy who’s grinding a little bit, they seem to come up in big spots and today he didn’t let us down.” More on Sports More videos Santander signed a five-year, US$92.5 million contract with the Blue Jays on Jan. 20 after eight seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. He said that his slow start isn’t because he’s trying too hard to justify the lucrative contract. Trending Now Canada Post workers issue strike notice for May 23 Canada Post strike: Here is what will still be delivered in a work stoppage “It might look like I’m trying to do too much, because I used to swing hard all the time, but right now, we are out of the rhythm,” said Santander, who added that he’s not 100 per cent with a sore hip and shoulder. “It doesn’t look pretty, but I’m working on it to have that rhythm back and it won’t look like I’m trying to do too much.” PITCHER’S DUEL DECLINED — Chris Bassitt has learned the hard way that when he’s up against another great pitcher like San Diego’s Dylan Cease it’s not on him to win the duel. Story continues below advertisement “I really try not to focus on who’s pitching,” said Bassitt. “I’ve done it in the past, and I’ve kind of been burned by it. (…) You go up against a guy like Cease, and then it’s like, ‘all right, I’m trying to do more to hold them down.’ “Usually, trying to do more is always the wrong answer. So I’ve learned, to not really care who’s pitching because I’m not facing them.” Bassitt (4-2) had a quality start, striking out six and allowing four hits and a walk over six scoreless innings. Cease (1-3) struck out six and gave up just three hits and one walk over seven innings, but allowed three runs. 3. Qantas claims it made ‘a mistake’ in illegally sacking 1820 ground workers Qantas claims it made ‘a mistake’ in illegally sacking 1820 ground workers Qantas says it has “learnt its lesson” after unlawfully sacking more than 1800 ground workers, claiming the decision was a “mistake” rather than deliberate. The airline was thrice found to have acted unlawfully when it fired 1820 staff in favour of outsourced contractors during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. While an earlier compensation hearing before Justice Michael Lee found Qantas should pay $120 million to impacted workers, now a hearing will decide the added penalty Qantas must pay for the 2020 decision. The hearing in the Federal Court in Sydney continued on Wednesday for its third day before Justice Lee, where Barrister for Qantas Justin Gleeson SC continued his submissions. Mr Gleeson told the court Qantas’s decision was “a mistake” and not “intentional”. Camera IconQantas Lawyers Richard Dalton and Monica Caristo arrive at Federal Court on day three of hearings to determine the penalty Qantas should pay for illegally outsourcing over 1800 workers. NewsWire / Nikki Short Credit: News Corp AustraliaCamera IconTWU Lawyer Noel Hutley (L) told the court the airline had the “temptation of the potential to produce a massive profit”. NewsWire / Nikki Short Credit: News Corp Australia “Going forward your honour can be comfortably satisfied Qantas has learnt its lesson,” he said. “Through Ms Walsh’s division and the board … the risk of making this error again is low. “Qantas is coming to your honour as a first offender … and it would be oppressive to say you should pay close to the maximum penalty.” Various meetings between senior managers at Qantas, a GMC meeting and a board meeting came under the microscope in court on Wednesday. Mr Gleeson contended the problem with the outsourcing decision was not exposed to the GMC or board members during the meetings. “Effectively the green light was given (to the board) … the problem was there but it was not exposed to the GMC or to the board and that’s to be taken into account when assessing the liability,” he said. Mr Gleeson said the process “fell down” when it had not come to the attention of anyone at the GMC level that a red flag needed to be put up when making the decision. Camera IconQantas could be forced to pay $120 million in penalties on top of the millions it is already set to pay in compensation to sacked workers. NewsWire / Luis Enrique Ascui Credit: News Corp Australia Earlier in the hearing, Mr Gleeson said the airline is seeking a penalty between $40-$80m. “We submit the penalty should be in the mid-range,” he said. Mr Gleeson said any penalty close to the maximum would be “manifestly unfair”. “Qantas has accepted the seriousness of its conduct,” he said. “The court can and should impose a significant deterrent penalty. However, it is in effect a first contravention (of the fair work act).” The maximum penalty Qantas can be ordered to pay is $121m, on top of the $120m compensation fund that is now in the process of being administered to workers. Earlier the Transport Workers Union called for the maximum penalty be inflicted upon Qantas, and said the flying kangaroo was faced with a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” during the pandemic to save more than $100m per year. Camera IconTWU National Secretary Michael Kaine said the union is calling for Qantas to pay the maximum penalty of $120m on top of the $120m compensation fund which is now in the process of being administered to workers. NewsWire / Nikki Short Credit: News Corp Australia Noel Hutley SC said the airline had the “temptation of the potential to produce a massive profit”. In his submissions on Tuesday, Mr Hutley said Qantas had acted with “arrogance and a dismissive and self-justified attitude towards these events” that it was “dragging out”. While Justice Lee is yet to decide exactly who will receive the money from the penalty imposed upon Qantas, there are three likely parties proposed. The TWU is seeking a large majority of the penalty, and also argued effected workers should receive further compensation. Otherwise, the funds could go directly to the commonwealth. The Federal Court earlier found that Qantas had acted against protections in the Fair Work Act in its outsourcing and was partly motivated by a desire to prevent industrial action. The airline appealed the decision to the full bench of the Federal Court and later the High Court, both of which were unsuccessful. After losing the appeal, the union and Qantas went to mediation to determine how much Qantas would have to pay the outsourced workers for economic losses linked to lost wages. The hearing before Justice Michael Lee is expected to span over five days, ending on Friday. The writing and story is where it fumbled due to Neil Druckman’s bad decisions, character designs, the letting go of Amy Henning, and the direction. It all fell apart due to those factors. 5. GOP Senator Forced to Step in After RFK Jr. Loses His Cool in Hearing GOP Senator Forced to Step in After RFK Jr. Loses His Cool in Hearing Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. exploded during a hearing Tuesday, prompting a Republican senator to urge him to “hold back.” Kennedy’s outburst came after Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) slammed drastic staffing and funding cuts at his department, and asked whose decision it was to withhold certain childcare and development funds. Kennedy began by criticizing former President Joe Biden’s administration, and when Murray tried to get him back on track, he snapped back: “You know what, you’ve made an accusation and I’m going to answer it.” Kennedy has presided over chaotic layoffs at the HHS, often reinstating workers who were fired due to Kennedy then launched into into a heated personal tirade against Murray, who tried to rein him in to no avail. “I want to point out something Senator, you’ve presided here, I think, for 32 years. You’ve presided over the destruction of the health of the American people,” he said as he raised his voice. “Seriously?” Murray interjected repeatedly as Kennedy barged on. “Our people are now the sickest people in the world because you have not done your job!” he exclaimed. “Mr. Secretary, seriously,” Murray said. But Kennedy, an anti-vaccine activist and frequent peddler of conspiracy theories, wasn’t done. “What have you done about it? What have you done about the epidemic of chronic disease?” he shouted, repeating, “What have you done about the epidemic of chronic disease?” That’s when Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), the chair of the Senate Appropriations subcommittee that Kennedy was testifying before, decided to step in. “Mr. Secretary I would ask you to hold back and let the senator ask the questions,” Capito told Kennedy. The answer to Murray’s initial question about who had ordered the funding cuts turned out to be simple. “That was made by my department,” Kennedy conceded. It wasn’t just Democratic Senators who voiced concern about rollbacks that the HHS has made as part of President Donald Trump’s crusade to slash the size of the federal government. The HHS on Tuesday reinstated 328 federal employees at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health who faced terminations. The Trump administration initially sought to slash its workforce by more than 90%. / Tasos Katopodis/Getty Images Capito herself addressed recent cuts at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOH), which oversees workplace safety, saying: “I support the President’s vision to right-size our government, but as you and I have discussed, I don’t think eliminating NIOSH programs will accomplish that goal.” Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD) said cuts to mining research programs hosted by NIOH, “undermines our ability to meet national security goals tied to mineral independence and supply chain resilience.” Source link #GOP #Senator #Forced #Step #RFK #Loses #Cool #Hearing Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  7. Economic recovery ‘stalling’: Westpac says rate cut is a lifeline for households Economic recovery ‘stalling’: Westpac says rate cut is a lifeline for households A Westpac survey of future growth prospects suggests the Reserve Bank’s interest rate cut Tuesday will be much needed. The Westpac-Melbourne Leading Index, which forecasts the likely pace of economic activity three to nine months in the future, saw a dive in sentiment, dropping to 0.2 per cent from 0.5 per cent in March. According to the bank, the growth rate is now unchanged on six months ago, with five of the eight components of the index weakening in the past half year. “The above-trend growth pulse that emerged at the start of the year has all but disappeared,.” Westpac’s head of *********** macro-forecasting, Matthew Hassan said. The largest drop has been a fall in consumer expectations, which is consistent with Reserve Bank Governor Michele Bullock’s assessment yesterday that households were yet to open their wallets despite a lift in wages and February’s rate cut. “We’ve been surprised consumption hasn’t recovered as real incomes are starting to recover,” Ms Bullock said Tuesday. The Westpac index found the turmoil created by Donald Trump’s ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs had knocked the *********** stock market and was starting to crimp the previously “positive contributions” from commodity prices. The index also found that the impact of the tariff announcements was reducing US industrial production and having a negative effect on interest rates paid by businesses. Tuesday, the RBA revealed that it was modelling three separate scenarios as a result of US trade policy, the worst of which resulted in an all out tariff war that caused financial contagion and a hit to ******** GDP of 4 per cent, a 3 per cent hit to *********** GDP and a rise in the unemployment rate to 6 per cent. “Monetary policy is well placed to respond decisively to international developments,” the Bank said Tuesday. Following the announcement of a 90-day pause by the US administration and China, the prospect of an all out trade war had softened but the Reserve Bank has stilled shaved its forecast for *********** economic growth from 2.4 per cent to 2.1 per cent in December as a result of the global uncertainty.. Westpac sees growth dropping to 1.9 per cent by year end, “a sub-par result by historical standards”. Mr Hassan, however, said the international picture was beginning to stabilise. “It does not look too threatening at this stage, with most of the effect coming via sentiment and financial markets rather than a hit to trade and export prices,” he said. “As such, we continue to expect the RBA to take a cautious, measured approach to policy easing with the meeting in early July likely to see policy left on hold.” With inflation safely back in the RBA’s target band, Treasurer Jim Chalmers is seeing pressure to use the expanded mandate to grow the economy. He said the Government would not be distracted by the collapse of the Coalition, and said Labor is “focused on the job at hand.” “In our first term, the primary focus was on the cost of living, getting inflation down sustainably and we will continue to focus on that. “This second term gives us an opportunity to lay down some of the longer term foundations for a more productive economy, in getting the energy transformation right, making sure that Australians have the skills to adapt and adopt technology, making sure we get the most out of our big investments in the care economy, making our economy more competitive and productive and dynamic,” Dr Chalmers said. 8. Supreme Court restores voting privileges of censured anti-trans Maine Republican lawmaker Supreme Court restores voting privileges of censured anti-trans Maine Republican lawmaker The U.S. Supreme Court has restored the voting privileges of Maine state Rep. Laurel Libby, a Republican, who was censured and barred from voting in the state House of Representatives after she outed and deadnamed a transgender student athlete. Libby and six of her constituents sued Maine House Speaker Ryan Fecteau and others over the censure, claiming it had interfered with her work as a legislator and violated her constituents’ voting rights. The high court Tuesday granted her request for a preliminary injunction that restores her vote while the lawsuit proceeds. The court’s vote was 7-2, with liberal Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson in the *********. Lower courts had refused to intervene in the case, citing the doctrine of legislative immunity, which protects lawmakers from certain legal actions. “Not very long ago, this Court treaded carefully with respect to exercising its equitable power to issue injunctive relief at the request of a party claiming an emergency,” Jackson wrote in her dissent. “The opinions are legion in which individual Justices, reviewing such requests in chambers, declined to intervene — reiterating that ‘such power should be used sparingly and only in the most critical and exigent circumstances.’” “Those days are no more,” she continued. “Today’s Court barely pauses to acknowledge these important threshold limitations on the exercise of its own authority. It opts instead to dole out error correction as it sees fit, regardless of the lack of any exigency and even when the applicants’ claims raise significant legal issues that warrant thorough evaluation by the lower courts that are dutifully considering them.” Libby had posted a photo of a trans female athlete on Facebook in February and deadnamed her. Libby has frequently denounced the presence of trans girls and women in female sports. “It is fundamentally unfair to allow biological males to compete in girls’ sports, yet that is what’s happening in Maine,” she wrote in one Facebook post. She has also praised Donald Trump’s executive order that threatens to take federal funding from any state that allows trans girls and women to compete alongside cis females in school sports. A few days after she posted the photo of the athlete, the Maine House voted 75-70 to censure Libby, with Democrats in favor and Republicans against. That meant she couldn’t vote or speak on the House floor unless she apologized, which she refused to do. Libby defended her post as free speech, but Democrats said it was wrong to target the student. “There is a time and place for policy debates,” Fecteau, a gay Democrat, said at the time. “That time and place will never be a social media post attacking a Maine student. Maine kids and all Maine people deserve better.” Fecteau said he had not asked Libby to deny her beliefs but merely wanted her to apologize to the girl. He had previously spoken to Libby and asked her to remove the post, but she refused. It has been shared widely and helped spur a confrontation between Trump and Maine Gov. Janet Mills. At a White House meeting in February, Trump demanded that Mills comply with his executive order, and she said she’d see him in court. She recently won a settlement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture that restored Maine’s school meal funding, which the USDA had frozen because of her support for trans youth. The Trump administration is still pursuing other legal action against Maine. Libby praised the high court’s action in a post on X, formerly Twitter. 13. Asia stocks edge up as US trade deals in focus Asia stocks edge up as US trade deals in focus Asian equities edged higher on Wednesday, with risk appetite contained by elevated bond yields as investors remained nervous about the fiscal outlook of major developed economies and the lack of progress on fresh trade deals. Crude prices rose more than $US1 ($A1.60) a barrel after a CNN report said Israel was preparing a strike on Iranian nuclear facilities, raising supply concerns out of the key Middle East producing region and bringing geopolitical concerns back into focus. All eyes are also on the Japanese bond markets, a day after yields on super-long tenors surged to record highs on worries about demand for the country’s debt after a weak 20-year auction. In early trading on Wednesday, the yield on 20-year bonds edged up two basis points, while those on the 30-year JGB slipped 1.5 bps. In stocks, China’s blue-chip index was muted in early trading, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index rose 0.58 per cent. China said it could take legal action against any individual or organisation assisting or implementing US measures that advise companies against using advanced semiconductors from China. The MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan crept up 0.5 per cent, while Japan’s Nikkei was down 0.18 per cent. “The markets are hungry for new catalysts to pique further risk appetite,” said Kyle Rodda, senior financial market analyst at Capital.com. “The US’s backflip on trade policy and the damage control that it went into to clean up the mess it created with the Liberation Day tariffs signals a determination to get all of this done. That’s what is keeping equity valuations well supported.” Data on Wednesday showed Japanese shipments to the US fell in April even as exports rose for the seventh straight month, highlighting the toll President Donald Trump’s tariffs could take on the fragile economic recovery in Japan. Fiscal woes were also reflected on Wall Street, with the benchmark S&P 500 snapping a six-day winning streak on Tuesday, limited by a rise in US Treasury yields, which were steady in Asian hours on Wednesday. A tax bill that could add about $US3 trillion ($A4.7 trillion) to $US5 trillion ($A7.8 trillion) to the US federal government’s mushrooming $US36.2 trillion ($A56.4 trillion) debt load is expected to be voted on later this week in Congress, just days after Moody’s became the latest agency to lower the country’s credit rating. Analysts also noted that any progress on new trade deals between the US and its trade partners could fuel risk appetite, although concerns were that Trump’s policies could have already damaged the global economy. On Tuesday, US Federal Reserve officials said that higher prices were coming on the back of rising US import tariffs and counselled patience before making any interest rate decisions. Traders were also wary of US officials angling for a weaker greenback at Group of Seven finance minister meetings currently under way in Canada. In Europe, STOXX 50’s futures were steady while FTSE 100 futures were muted, with caution setting in ahead of a consumer inflation report expected later in the day out of the United Kingdom. Economists polled by Reuters forecast the consumer price index to rise 3.3 per cent in April from the previous month’s 2.2 per cent. The dollar index, which measures the US currency against six other units, edged down 0.03 per cent to 99.938, following a 1.3 per cent two-day decline. The Japanese yen strengthened to 144.27 per dollar, hovering near its strongest level in two weeks. Gold prices rose on Wednesday as the dollar weakened and investors flocked to safe-haven assets. Spot gold was 0.14 per cent at $US3,293 ($A5,130) per ounce, the highest in more than a week. 17. New report reveals first car that caught fire at Jacksonville airport parking garage New report reveals first car that caught fire at Jacksonville airport parking garage A Jacksonville Aviation Authority police report obtained by Times-Union news partner First Coast News details the events leading up to the parking garage fire that shut down the Jacksonville International Airport May 16. It also reveals the first car to catch fire four hours after a woman parked. According to the report, the Aviation Authority received a dispatch call from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office at 12:06 p.m. regarding a vehicle on fire in the hourly garage. The first airport officer on scene said he discovered a car had caught on fire with flames rapidly spreading to others around it. The smoke resulted in “low/no visibility” in the garage, so the officer assisted several passengers from the garage to safety. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue personnel responded and extinguished the fire but said it had spread to and damaged about 50 other vehicles. The airport then ceased all operations, the report states. The investigation continued with review of surveillance footage, which showed the following: 8:07 a.m.: Dark-colored mid-size BMW enters hourly garage through upper level access. 8:09 a.m.: Woman parks, exits car and walks toward departures. 12:03 p.m.: Smoke observed coming from beneath of the front of the car. 12:04 p.m.: Vehicle is fully engulfed in fire. Camera loses visibility because of smoke. The report does not state whether the BMW was a gas, electric or hybrid vehicle. What’s the latest from Jacksonville International Airport about parking garage fire updates? A concrete support beam from an upper floor rests on a burned vehicle May 19, 2025. The beam fell during the fire at the Jacksonville International Airport’s hourly parking three days earlier. A portion of the parking garage partially collapsed during the mid-day fire that forced the closure of airport for several hours and the indefinite closure of the parking garage to allow experts to assess the structural safety of the building. The Aviation Authority also issued the following updates: The north side of the Hourly Garage (Rows A-E, all levels) is accessible to travelers parked there at 5 p.m. May 20. A call center will be staffed until 7 p.m. and reopen at 9 a.m. Customers that do not remember where they parked are welcome to call (904) 741-2710. If customers want to reach out after 7 p.m., they can email *****@*****.tld and a call center representative will contact them in the morning. Valet customers can call (904) 741-3900. Airport staff are now calling individuals parked in safe areas of the hourly garage that registered their vehicles at flyjax.com. Once contacted, they can pick up their vehicles starting at 5 p.m. May 20. “We ask that people come and get their vehicles only AFTER they are contacted by staff confirming their vehicle is safe to pick up to help us ensure an orderly process,” the authority said. 20. Fortnite back on US Apple app store after five years Fortnite back on US Apple app store after five years Popular video game Fortnite is now available on Apple’s app store in the US after being taken off the platform nearly five years ago. The title was removed in August 2020 for violating Apple’s policies by launching its own in-app payment system. This would have bypassed a 30% commission that the technology giant charges on all in-app purchases. The move triggered a legal battle brought by Fortnite developer Epic Games, which called the fee unfair and accused Apple of running the app store as a monopoly. In a post on X, Fortnite said it was now available on the US app store, as well as the Epic Games Store and AltStore in the European Union. “It will show up on Search soon!” the post added. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The firm has always said its rules protect users’ security. Fortnite became unavailable last week on app stores around the world, after an update was apparently being blocked by Apple. Last January, the game returned to the EU app store after a four year absence, spurred by a law designed to increase competition. Google, which also removed Fortnite from its app store in 2020 over its payment rules, lifted its ban on downloads last year. Fortnite is hugely popular with around 400 million registered players. The shooting and building game technically has multiple game modes. But its online battle royale is by far its most popular feature, where up to 100 players compete to be the last one standing. Liberal senator was recruiting Jacinta Nampijinpa Price for ‘10 years’ before her defection Liberal senator was recruiting Jacinta Nampijinpa Price for ‘10 years’ before her defection James Paterson says he was actively recruiting Jacinta Nampijinpa Price for a decade before her shock defection to the Liberal party room after the federal election. Senator Price is a member of the Northern Territory’s Country Liberal Party. As an affiliate of the Liberals and Nationals, the CLP’s members can choose which party room to sit in at the federal level. Senator Paterson acknowledged it was “certainly possible” Senator Price switching to the Liberals played a role in the collapse of the Coalition, but that “the truth is that Jacinta Price has always felt that she was a Liberal”. 22. Matunuck Oyster Bar likely total loss after fire. What we know. Matunuck Oyster Bar likely total loss after fire. What we know. A two-alarm fire at Matunuck Oyster Bar in South Kingstown early in the morning on May 20 caused serious damage to the iconic restaurant and firefighters say the restaurant will likely be a total loss. “The building did suffer a lot of damage,” Union Fire Chief Steve Pinch said Tuesday morning. “I would think they’d probably have to take the building down and start over.” The building was empty, and no injuries were reported. Matunuck Oyster Bar owner Perry Raso is hugged by his employees after the restaurant was destroyed by a fire on May 20, 2025. Owner Perry Raso is ‘heartbroken’ Matunuck Oyster Bar owner Perry Raso released a statement through a spokesman, first thanking the firefighters who responded to the early morning blaze. “While the damage to our building is devastating to me, our patrons, and our employees, we are very thankful no one was injured,” he said. Raso said he is working closely with the Department of Labor & Training, the Governor’s Office, and other public officials to assist Matunuck Oyster Bar’s more than 300 full-time and seasonal employees. He also thanked all the neighbors, patrons, partners, colleagues and friends from Rhode Island and beyond who reached out with offers to help. “We are humbled by this outpouring of kindness from our community, and we are working to explore the most efficient and most impactful avenues available, in order to ensure that our staff receives assistance during this difficult time,” Raso said. “We are humbled and grateful for what Matunuck Oyster Bar represents to so many people,” he said. “While we are heartbroken that our doors will be temporarily closed, we are committed to opening them back up and welcoming guests back to our tables as soon as possible.” Matunuck Oyster Bar fire fueled by strong winds Firefighters found “a large amount of fire” coming from the rear and second floor of the 2½-story Matunuck Oyster Bar when they responded before 4 a.m., Pinch said. Firefighters got the call at about 3:44 a.m. and were there within 8 minutes, he said. The fire was initially fueled by a strong wind “as firefighters aggressively attacked the blaze,” the Union Fire District said in a press release. The fire reached the building’s void spaces, making the firefighting more challenging, the Fire Department said. A second alarm was struck to bring additional resources to the scene, the Fire Department said. The wind died down within about a half hour, and the approximately 35 firefighters on scene had the fire under control within about 1½ hours, Pinch said. Pinch and other firefighters were still at the fire scene as of about 8 a.m., cleaning up and putting out hot spots. Restaurant owner Perry Raso was also there. What caused the Matunuck Oyster Bar fire? The state Fire Marshals Office is investigating the cause, which is standard procedure, Pinch said. The Union Fire District Fire Marshal’s Office and the South Kingstown Police Department are working with the state office in the investigation. The restaurant was open Monday night, according to Pinch. Matunuck Oyster Bar recently named one of the best restaurants in the country Matunuck Oyster Bar is one of Rhode Island’s most popular restaurants and, according to USA Today’s 2024 Restaurants of the Year list, one of the top 44 places to eat in America. How was Matunuck Oyster Bar started? Raso started the restaurant as an extension of his oyster farming business in 2009. He founded Matunuck Oyster Farm in 2002 on a 7-acre commercial aquaculture lease, on Potter Pond in East Matunuck, a village in South Kingstown. Because he needed the dock in 2009, Raso purchased a small, seasonal restaurant on the inlet and it’s grown from there. Pinch has dined at Matunuck Oyster Bar and called it an “awesome” restaurant. “We feel bad for all of the employees, and everyone affected by this fire,” Pinch said. “It’s heartbreaking.” “The Matunuck Oyster Bar is a fixture in the town,” Pinch later added in a press release. “It employs a lot of people. Most people in the community know someone who works there. It has a big impact on the town’s economy. It’s tough imagining the summer going on without having the Oyster Bar open.” “Hopefully, they rebuild and are even better when they reopen,” Pinch said. A fire likely destroyed the Matunuck Oyster Bar in South Kingstown on May 20, 2025 Pinch praised the work of the department’s firefighters. “Our firefighters did a tremendous job, in extreme heat and wind conditions in a difficult building,” he said. “It was a pretty stubborn fire.” According to the Union Fire District, mutual aid was provided by fire departments from Narragansett, North Kingstown, Charlestown and the Kingston Fire District. The North Kingstown Fire Department also provided station coverage, while South Kingstown EMS and the University of Rhode Island EMS were both at the scene on standby, the Fire Department said. Because the building is close to the water, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management responded to the scene, according to the Fire Department. 23. Lawyers battle over Trump admin deporting immigrants to war-torn South Sudan Lawyers battle over Trump admin deporting immigrants to war-torn South Sudan Deported migrants arrive from the U.S. in a military plane at Ramon Villeda Morales airport in Cortes, Honduras on January 31, 2025, the first flight of migrants returned to Honduras under the Donald Trump administration. Emilio Flores | Anadolu | Getty Images For the second time in less than two weeks, immigration lawyers have gone to federal court to try and stop the Trump administration from deporting a small group of immigrants from the United States to a war-torn country not their own. Immigration attorneys told the court that at least two of their clients, from Myanmar and Vietnam, were deported Tuesday morning to South Sudan in violation of a court order, and they demanded their return. “The Court should further restrain all flights carrying class members to South Sudan or any other third country,” the attorneys said. The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and NBC News was not able to independently verify that a deportation flight to South Sudan had occurred. A State Department travel advisory warns Americans not to go to South Sudan “due to crime, kidnapping, and armed conflict” and notes that in March, because of the situation there, the department “ordered the departure of non-emergency U.S. government employees from South Sudan.” Both of the immigrants alleged to have been sent to South Sudan on Tuesday were the subjects of final removal orders allowing the government to deport them to their countries of origin, according to court filings. In their filing, the attorneys included an email from the wife of a Vietnamese immigrant who said she believed her husband and at least 10 other people were deported to South Sudan on Tuesday morning. She said the immigrants had refused to sign forms facilitating their deportations to a country not their own. The woman, whose name was redacted in the filing, wrote to her husband’s attorneys, “The order of removal signed by a judge is to deport my husband back to his country of origin, Vietnam, not to any other third country.” The Trump administration had tried to send a group of immigrants to Libya this month. The immigrants were from countries like the Philippines, Vietnam and Laos, according to an emergency motion their lawyers filed at the time. That flight was stopped after a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order. The judge said the immigrants needed to be given notice and the chance to raise concerns about possible torture or persecution. The attempt to stop or reverse the deportations to South Sudan is before the same judge. The immigration attorneys believe at least one of the people the Trump administration had tried to send to Libya was sent to South Sudan. Efforts to reach the South Sudanese government for comment were not successful.
