*** suspends free trade talks with Israel and announces sanctions over West Bank settlers
*** suspends free trade talks with Israel and announces sanctions over West Bank settlers
LONDON (AP) — The U.K. suspended free trade talks with Israel on Tuesday and hit West Bank settlers with sanctions, less than a day after vowing “concrete actions” if Israel didn’t stop its new military offensive in Gaza.
Pressure from close allies is mounting on Israel following a nearly three-month blockade of supplies into Gaza that led to famine warnings. Even the United States, a staunch ally, has voiced concerns over the hunger crisis.
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said the government couldn’t continue talks on upgrading its existing trade agreement with an Israeli government pursuing what he called egregious policies in Gaza and the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
“History will judge them,” Lammy said. “Blocking aid. Expanding the war. Dismissing the concerns of your friends and partners. This is indefensible. And it must stop.”
Israeli’s ambassador to the U.K., Tzipi Hotovely, was summoned to the Foreign Office, where Middle East minister Hamish Falconer said he would call the 11-week blockade of aid to Gaza “cruel and indefensible.”
Separately, European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the bloc was reviewing an EU pact governing trade ties with Israel over its conduct of the war in Gaza. She said “a huge majority” of member nations are “very keen on sending this message that the suffering of these people is untenable.” She did not provide clear details on timing and mechanisms for review.
‘Utterly intolerable’
Lammy said the U.K. was imposing sanctions on a further “three individuals, two ******** settler outposts and two organizations supporting violence against the ************ community.”
He said the ******** Israeli settlements were spreading across the West Bank “with the explicit support of this Israeli government.”
Israel’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Oren Marmorstein, called the sanctions against West Bank settlers “unjustified and regrettable” and said the free trade agreement negotiations were not being advanced by the U.K. anyway.
While Lammy’s words were welcomed by some in the House of Commons, others called for stronger action, suggesting economic sanctions against Israel and recognizing the state of Palestine.
A handful of members shouted for him to call Israel’s actions “genocide,” though Lammy labeled it “extremism” and “monstrous.”
Still others criticized the joint statement, saying it favored ******.
“Opposing the expansion of a war that has killed thousands of children is not rewarding ******,” Lammy said.
The U.K. announcement followed comments by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who called children’s suffering in Gaza “utterly intolerable” and repeated his call for a ceasefire.
“I want to put on record today that we’re horrified by the escalation from Israel,” Starmer said.
Starmer calls for ceasefire
On Monday, Starmer joined French President Emmanuel Macron and ********* Prime Minister Mark Carney in issuing one of the most significant criticisms by close allies of Israel’s handling of the war in Gaza and its actions in the West Bank.
The three leaders threatened to take “concrete actions” if the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not cease its renewed military offensive and significantly lift restrictions on humanitarian aid.
Netanyahu called the statement “a huge prize” for ******.
Starmer said a ceasefire was the only way to free the dozens of hostages ****** still holds. He also called for increased shipments of humanitarian aid into Gaza, saying the basic quantity allowed by Israel is “utterly inadequate.”
“This war has gone on for far too long,” Starmer said. “We cannot allow the people of Gaza to starve.”
While Israel allowed a first few trucks with baby food and desperately needed supplies to begin rolling into Gaza on Monday, U.N. humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher described it as a “drop in the ocean of what is urgently needed.” Israel said dozens more trucks entered Tuesday.
Tensions between France and Israel
Israel initially received widespread international support to root out ****** militants following the group’s surprise attack that killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, on Oct. 7, 2023, and took 251 captives.
But patience with Israel is wearing thin after more than 53,000 ************ deaths, mostly women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which doesn’t differentiate between civilians and combatants in its count. Israel’s latest onslaught has killed more than 300 people in recent days, local health officials said.
In recent weeks, Macron intensified diplomatic efforts to put pressure on Israel, urging a ceasefire and calling for lifting the blockade of humanitarian aid.
Last month, Macron said France should move toward recognizing a ************ state, possibly in June when France and Saudi Arabia co-host an international conference about implementing a two-state solution.
Macron, who has said that recognizing Palestine is not a ″taboo″ for France, last week suggested that revisiting the EU’s cooperation agreements with Israel is on the table.
Tensions between France and Israel have escalated after Macron called for stopping arms deliveries for use in Gaza in an October radio interview, prompting Netanyahu’s criticism. France also sought to impose a ban on Israeli defense companies to prevent them from exhibiting weapons at the Euronaval trade exhibition.
Settler violence
The U.S., France, the EU, the U.K. and Canada previously hit Israeli settlers and settler groups with sanctions for their involvement in violence against Palestinians and in ******** development in the West Bank.
The measures expose the sanctioned people and groups to asset freezes and travel and visa bans. The Associated Press previously reported that these measures have had minimal impact as a deterrent.
Settler attacks causing injury or death to Palestinians have surged since the ****** attack in 2023. Israel says it opposes settler violence and blames it on an extremist fringe.
Palestinians say the Israeli army does little to protect them and that the attacks are part of a systematic attempt to expel them from their land.

UNESCO studied the history of the Greek language and recognized its universal importance. The UN organization highlighted the virtues of Greek, its millennia of continuity, its enriching science and humanities all over the planet with vocabulary, concepts and meaning.
By Evaggelos Vallianatos
On Saturday, April 5, 2025, the Hellenic Library of Southern California sponsored a global Zoom meeting and discussion praising the virtues of the Greek language. This celebration was a tribute to the February 9 International Greek Language Day that hymned Greek as the “Language of the Light of History.”
The Zoom meeting brought together 17 organizations from around the world. From Greece, there were two municipalities of Athens, Sepolia and Haidari, the Aegean islands of Astypalaia and Kastellorizo, Volos / Iolkos (Thessaly), Ioannina (Epiros, northwest Greece), Karakovouni Kynourias (Arcadia in Peloponnesos), Crete and Methoni (Messenia, Peloponnesos).
Organizations outside of Greece came from Cyprus, Argentina, China, London, Los Angeles, Naples, New York, and Chicago.
Listening to the Greek speakers from Greece, Cyprus, the United States, Argentina, Italy, and the ***, and to the ******** teachers of Greek from Beijing University and the University of Shanghai, was a pleasure. All, without exception, hymned Greek, its millennial history, civilizing influence and worldwide reach. One of the two ******** professors of Greek teaching at the University of Shanghai, Sophia Hu Jingjing, spoke Greek so well and so eloquently that it brought to mind the spread of Greek in Asia during the Alexandrian Age.
The Greek poet C. P. Cavafy, 1863-1933, in one of his stories/poems, speaks of Alexander the Great and the Greeks “without the Lakedaimonians” sending battle trophies to the Athenians for the Parthenon from their victories against the Persians.
Cavafy lived in Alexandria, Egypt. He was full of pride for the victories of Alexander and the establishment of Hellenic hegemony in Persia, and the spread of Greek all over Alexander’s empire. He says:
“And from the wonderful Panhellenic campaign, the victorious, the brilliant,
the talked about, the glorified,
as no other was ever glorified,
the unparalleled: we emerged and became
a new great Greek world.
“We the Alexandrians, the Antiochians,
The Seleucids, and the numerous
other Greeks of Egypt and Syria,
And those in Media, and in Persia, and all the others. With the extensive territories,
With the diverse action of thoughtful adaptations.
And the Common spoken Greek language
we took all the way to the people of Bactria, and to the people of India.”
UNESCO and the Greek language
Cavafy was right. Alexander the Great and the institutions of civilization he and his successors built in Asia and Egypt spread Greek to the world. Some 2,500 years later, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is about to formally dedicate February 9 of each year for the celebration of the World Greek Language Day.
UNESCO studied the history of the Greek language and recognized its universal importance. The UN organization highlighted the virtues of Greek, its millennia of continuity, its enriching science and humanities all over the planet with vocabulary, concepts and meaning. I quote extensively from the UNESCO text:
“[Greek has an] unbroken continuity of 40 centuries of oral tradition and 35 centuries of written tradition… the alphabetic script… makes Greek the longest continuously spoken and written language in Europe. As the poet Giorgos Seferis said during his Nobel Prize Banquet speech in 1963:
“Greek language has never ceased to be spoken. It has undergone the changes that all living things experience, but there has never been a gap.”
“A highly elaborated structure as a language (vocabulary, grammar and syntax), due to its use by unparalleled historical figures of literature, poetry, theatre, philosophy, politics and science, such as Homer, Plato, Aristotle, Aeschylus, Thucydides, Hippocrates, Archimedes and the Fathers of the Church.

The global influence of the Greek language
The UNESCO text continues:
“A widespread presence in many languages, as, over time, Greek has been one of the most important languages in terms of its influence on all other European languages and, through them, in the world of languages. Moreover, the particular significance of the Greek language is clearly confirmed by the fact that it is taught internationally both in its ancient form in Classical Studies chairs around the world and in its medieval (Byzantine) and modern form in Medieval and Modern Greek Language chairs worldwide.
“The Greek language was and remains to this day an inexhaustible source of international scientific terminology, especially in medicine, but also in mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, astronomy, quantum mechanics, social sciences and humanities. This is an internationally recognized feature of Greek, which is clearly documented, based on empirical and historical data.
“As the linguistic cradle of basic concepts of culture, science and philosophy, Greek holds, by historical and objective criteria, a distinct place among the languages of the world…. Galileo Galilei, considered the Greek alphabet to be “man’s greatest discovery.”
“During the post-classical Hellenistic *******, Greek had been for six whole centuries the first international language, the transactional language of many different peoples (lingua franca) and, at the same time, a culture language (Kultursprache). The Greek language blossomed during the reign of Alexander the Great, it was accepted and embraced by the Roman civilization which adopted the Greek script in the form of the Latin alphabet… it was discovered and promoted by the Renaissance and harnessed to the fullest extent by the Enlightenment.
Is the Greek language dying? No, say most of the experts. Credit:Credit: Thomas Wolf/ CC BY-SA 3.0 de
The treasures of the Greek language
“The electronic Thesaurus Linguae Graecae (TLG), which includes texts written in Greek from Homer to the 15th century historians, comprises 12,000 Greek texts by four thousand (4,000) authors, consisting of 105,000,000 words (in all word types that appear in the texts).
“Historically, the Greek language occupies a key position in intellectual thought, in the linguistic expression and formulation of fundamental concepts and key words of European and wider, almost universal intellectual thought which are conveyed, understood or traced in words / concepts of the Greek language. Some indicative examples are:
“Sacred independent Hellas”
The treasures of the Greek language, known and recognized the world over, could lift the self-esteem of Modern Greeks. They should know their civilization killed darkness and barbarism, while launching the Renaissance and the Enlightenment in Western Europe. Modern Greeks are the descendants of men and women who invented democracy, science and life worth living in freedom. Their language, rule of law, gorgeous architecture and science were global for centuries.
Alexander the Great and Kapodistrias. Public Domain
Modern Greeks could still rebuild the Sacred Independent Hellas of Alexander the Great and Ioannis Kapodistrias. Start by toning down antagonisms at home. Think of festivities and games like the Olympics – and practice them exactly like the ancient Greeks did. They will help you think of why all Greek-speaking humans are brothers and sisters.
Working together will eliminate toxic foreign influence and corruption. Stop undermining Hellenic studies in Greek high schools and universities. Drop foreign ideas no matter how fashionable they appear to be. Focus on Greek ideas and Hellenic national interests. Start teaching Homer to students from the moment they start elementary schools. Homer was the teacher of the Greeks for millennia. Aristotle gave Alexander the Great the epics of Homer, the Iliad and the Odyssey.
Strengthen your defense forces to the point they will reverse the strategic imbalance in the Aegean. Work a common defense strategy (in facing the aggressive Turks) with the Kurds, Armenians, Egyptians, Indians and Israelis.
Revive democracy, direct democracy exactly like the Athenians of the fifth century BC. Become a school of democracy and science. Europe and the world need Greek guidance on how to live in peace, eudaimonia / flourishing, and in harmony with the natural world, the source of life. Create this new Hellenic order without fossil fuels. Ancient Greeks, especially in Rhodes, worshipped the Sun god Helios. The Sun and wind suffice to provide all the energy Greece may need.
Remember, the Greek language is in fact the light of Greek and world history and civilization. It is also the key to understanding the gorgeous virtues of our beautiful and life-giving Mother Earth.

Elon Musk claims he will step back from political donations in near future | Elon Musk
Elon Musk claims he will step back from political donations in near future | Elon Musk
Elon Musk claimed on Tuesday that he would decrease the amount of money he spends on politics for the foreseeable future. If true, the reduction would represent a significant turnaround after the world’s richest person positioned himself as the Republican party’s most enthusiastic donor over the last year.
“I think, in terms of political spending, I’m going to do a lot less in the future,” Musk said during a video interview with Bloomberg News at the Qatar Economic Forum.
Bloomberg’s Mishal Husain asked the Tesla CEO if he had decided how much to spend on midterm elections, which elicited Musk’s response. When asked why he was pulling back, Musk said flatly: “I think I’ve done enough” – drawing laughs from the audience, although it was unclear if he was joking.
The CEO of SpaceX spent almost $300m last year in support of Donald Trump, and his America Pac political organization was expected to be an influential backer of Republican candidates in the 2026 elections. Musk’s political donations and prominent role in the Trump administration as creator of the so-called “department of government efficiency” (Doge) have also caused international backlash, however, hurting both his popularity and sales of Tesla vehicles.
When Husain asked in a follow-up if the blowback to his politics was the reason Musk was leaning away from political contributions, Musk evaded the question while suggesting that he could change his mind.
“If I see a reason to do political spending in the future, I will do it. I do not currently see a reason,” Musk said.
Musk was a prolific donor during Trump’s re-election campaign, funding pro-Trump groups as well as a sweepstakes that awarded pre-selected voters $1m checks in a test of campaign finance laws. Musk additionally poured $25m into a Wisconsin supreme court election earlier this year, but his contributions in that race also became a liability as Democrats capitalized on his unpopularity and highlighted his outside influence during the campaign.
After the Wisconsin race, in which Musk’s candidate lost handily, some Republicans began to wonder how to balance their desire for the billionaire’s wealth with the public’s aversion to him. Musk had previously appeared intent on remaining active in using his immense resources to swing elections, with the Wall Street Journal reporting that his top political strategist spoke with a Nevada consultant in March to discuss an upcoming race in that state.

The interview in Qatar, which included a number of testy exchanges and Musk attacking critical media outlets, lasted around 40 minutes. Musk claimed that he would lead Tesla for at least another five years and took time to bash the Wall Street Journal, which recently reported the automaker’s board at one point opened a search to replace Musk as CEO. Musk additionally lashed out at fellow tech billionaire Bill Gates, saying he “frequented Jeffery Epstein”, and disputed that his Doge cuts to international aid risked harming children’s health, as Gates had asserted in a recent interview.
Although Musk said that he plans to have dinner with Trump this week, he has recently pivoted away from living full-time in Washington DC and told investors that he plans to spend more time managing his companies such as Tesla.

‘I Regret Voting For You’: Rubio Faces Democratic WRATH At Tense Senate Hearing
Senate Democrats on Tuesday used hearings with Secretary of State Marco Rubio to unleash criticism of the Trump administration’s pivot toward Russia, selective refugee admissions, deportation of student activists and gutting of U.S. soft-power programs. The hearing, nominally to discuss Trump’s 2026 foreign funding request, provided the first public opportunity for Senate Democrats, and some Republicans, to directly confront their former senate colleague since unanimously confirming him five months ago.

Google unveils ‘AI Mode’ in the next phase of its journey to change search | Google
Google unveils ‘AI Mode’ in the next phase of its journey to change search | Google
Google on Tuesday unleashed another wave of artificial intelligence technology to accelerate a year-long makeover of its search engine that is changing the way people get information and curtailing the flow of internet traffic to other websites.
The next phase outlined at Google’s annual developers conference includes releasing a new “AI mode” option in the United States. The company says the feature will make interacting with its search engine more like having a conversation with an expert capable of answering a wide array of questions.
AI mode is being offered to all users in the US just two-and-a-half months after the company began testing with a limited Labs division audience.
Google is also feeding its latest AI model, Gemini 2.5, into its search algorithms and will soon begin testing other AI features, such as the ability to automatically buy concert tickets and conduct searches through live video feeds.
In another example of Google’s all-in approach to AI, the company revealed it is planning to leverage the technology to re-enter the smart glasses market with a new pair of Android XR-powered spectacles. The preview of the forthcoming device, which includes a hands-free camera and a voice-powered AI assistant, comes 13 years after the debut of Google Glass, a product that the company scrapped after a public backlash over privacy concerns.
Google didn’t say when its Android XR glasses will be available or how much they will cost, but disclosed they will be designed in partnership with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. The glasses will compete against a similar product already on the market from Facebook parent Meta Platforms and Ray-Ban.
The expansion builds upon a transformation that Google began a year ago with the introduction of conversational summaries called “AI overviews” that have been increasingly appearing at the top of its results page and eclipsing its traditional rankings of web links.
About 1.5 billion people now regularly engage with “AI overviews”, according to Google, and most users are now entering longer and more complex queries.
“What all this progress means is that we are in a new phase of the AI platform shift, where decades of research are now becoming reality for people all over the world,” Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, said before a packed crowd in an amphitheater near the company’s headquarters in Mountain View, California.
Although Pichai and other Google executives predicted AI overviews would trigger more searches and ultimately more clicks to other sites, it hasn’t worked out that way so far, according to the findings of search optimization firm BrightEdge.
Clickthrough rates from Google’s search results have declined by nearly 30% during the past year, according to BrightEdge’s recently released study, which attributed the decrease to people becoming increasingly satisfied with AI overviews.
The decision to make AI mode broadly available after a relatively short test ******* reflects Google’s confidence that the technology won’t habitually spew misinformation that tarnishes its brand’s reputation, and acknowledges the growing competition from other AI-powered search options from the likes of ChatGPT and Perplexity.
The rapid rise of AI alternatives emerged as a recurring theme in legal proceedings that could force Google to dismantle parts of its internet empire after a federal judge last year declared its search engine to be an ******** monopoly.
In testimony during a trial earlier this month, longtime Apple executive Eddy Cue said Google searches done through the iPhone maker’s Safari browser have been declining because more people are leaning on AI-powered alternatives.
Google has cited the upheaval being caused by AI’s rise as one of the main reasons that it should only be required to make relatively minor changes to the way it operates its search engine because technology already is changing the competitive landscape.

But Google’s reliance on more AI so far appears to be enabling its search engine to maintain its mantle as the internet’s main gateway – a position that’s the main reason its corporate parent, Alphabet Inc, boasts a market value of $2tn.
During the year ending in March, Google received 136bn monthly visits, 34 times more than ChatGPT’s average of 4bn monthly visits, according to data compiled by onelittleweb.com.
Even Google’s own AI mode acknowledged that the company’s search engine seems unlikely to be significantly hurt by the shift to AI technology when a reporter from the Associated Press asked whether its introduction would make the company even more powerful.
“Yes, it is highly likely that Google’s AI mode will make Google more powerful, particularly in the realm of information access and online influence,” the AI mode responded. The feature also warns that web publishers should be concerned about AI mode reducing the traffic they get from search results.
Google’s upcoming tests in its labs division foreshadow the next wave of AI technology likely to be made available to the masses.
Besides using its Project Mariner technology to test the ability of an AI agent to buy tickets and book restaurant reservations, Google will also experiment with searches done through live video and an opt-in option to give its AI technology access to people’s Gmail and other Google apps so it can learn more about a user’s tastes and habits. Other features on this summer’s test list include a “deep search” option that will use AI to dig even deeper into complex topics and another tool that will produce graphical presentations of sports and finance data.
Google is also introducing its equivalent of a VIP pass to all its AI technology with an “ultra” subscription package that will cost $250 per month and include 30 terabytes of storage, too. That’s a big step beyond Google’s previous top-of-the-line package, which is now called “AI Pro”, that costs $20 per month and includes two terabytes of storage.

US chip export controls are a ‘failure’ because they spur ******** development, Nvidia boss says | Nvidia
US chip exports controls have been a “failure”, the head of Nvidia, Jensen Huang, told a tech forum on Wednesday, as the ******** government separately slammed US warnings to other countries against using ******** tech.
Successive US administrations have imposed restrictions on the ***** of hi-tech AI chips to China, in an effort to curb China’s military advancement and protect US dominance of the AI industry. But Huang told the Computex tech forum in Taipei that the controls had instead spurred on ******** developers.
“The local companies are very, very talented and very determined, and the export control gave them the spirit, the energy and the government support to accelerate their development,” Huang told media the Computex tech show in Taipei.
“I think, all in all, the export control was a failure.”
“China has a vibrant technology ecosystem, and it’s very important to realise that China has 50% of the world’s AI researchers, and China is incredibly good at software,” Huang said.
Nvidia, which designs high-end GPUs, has been battered by US chip export controls. Huang said on Wednesday the company had written off “billions of dollars” in sales, and it’s share of China’s AI chip market had fallen from almost 95% at the start of the Biden administration to 50%.
Last month Huang made a surprise visit to Beijing, where he met with the head of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, according to ******** state media, and the DeepSeek founder, Liang Wenfeng, according to the Financial Times.
His visit came just days after further US restrictions banned shipments to China of Nvidia’s H20 datacentre GPUs, a lower-powered version of other Nvidia chips which was designed specifically to comply with Biden-era restrictions.
The US government told Nvidia the new rules were designed to address the risk that its products might be “used in, or diverted to, a supercomputer in China”.
Huang’s Beijing meeting with Liang was to discuss new chip designs for the AI company that would not trigger the new US bans, the FT report said.
Last week the Trump administration rescinded some of the existing controls on chip sales to China, after some countries said they were being shut out from crucial technology needed to develop artificial intelligence.
But it also unveiled fresh guidelines for other countries, warning companies that using ********-made hi-tech AI semiconductors, specifically tech company Huawei’s Ascend chips, could put them in breach of existing US export controls.
In response China accused the US of “abusing export controls to suppress and contain China”. The commerce ministry said on Wednesday the warning was “typical unilateral bullying and protectionism, which seriously undermine the stability of the global semiconductor industry chain and supply chain”.
It also warned that “any organisation or individual that enforces or assists in enforcing such measures” could be in violation of ******** law.

Stranded & burnt down boat on Point Walter sandbar to be removed by Department of Transport this week
Stranded & burnt down boat on Point Walter sandbar to be removed by Department of Transport this week
A boat that has been stranded on a Perth sandbar for months and went up in flames last week is finally going to be removed by the Department of Transport.
The boat caught fire in Point Walter just before 3.30am on May 16.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said the blaze near the jetty was under control within an hour, though smoke continued to billow from the structure for some time.
Police said the cause of the fire was still to be determined.
The Department of Transport told PerthNow it had locked in plans to remove the abandoned vessel from the sandbank before the fire.
“A contract was awarded last week and it is anticipated the vessel will be removed in the coming week,” the spokesperson said.
“This will be done with the co-operation of the City of Melville and environmental sensitivities will be the priority for this operation.
“The Department of Transport’s maritime environmental emergency response team and Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions officers have been monitoring the vessel, and controls have been put in place to ensure that any pollution risks from the fire are minimised.”
The boat, which was once owned by Party Boat Charters and operated as The Deck five years ago, was seen on a mooring just 50m from the sandbank a week before it ran aground.
Party Boat Charters sold the boat to JoJo’s Marina in 2020. It was since spotted in Matilda Bay and the Blackwall Reach area.

The boat was in drydock for two-and-a-half weeks before it was covered in graffiti.
The DoT confirmed it had been in regular contact with the owner.

Nikola’s hydrogen trucks hit the auction block
Nikola’s hydrogen trucks hit the auction block
Nikola’s hydrogen trucks are officially up for auction, one of the company’s last big steps in unloading all of its assets after filing for bankruptcy in February.
Auction house Gordon Brothers reached an agreement with Nikola in Delaware bankruptcy court to purchase the hydrogen trucking assets late last week. Over the weekend, Gordon Brothers published the listing and a brochure detailing everything for *****.
The auction house says it has around $114 million worth of hydrogen trucks, raw material, and sub-assemblies. That includes 103 finished hydrogen fuel cell-powered trucks, along with spare batteries, tires, and other components. Gordon Brothers is also auctioning off Nikola’s hydrogen storage, refueling, and testing equipment, some of which is still brand new.
The hydrogen assets are hitting the market a little more than a month after EV startup Lucid Motors emerged as the surprise buyer of Nikola’s Arizona manufacturing facility and headquarters. Lucid also agreed to bring around 300 Nikola employees on board as part of that transaction, in exchange for roughly $30 million in cash and non-cash considerations.
Gordon Brothers will now look to auction these assets at a time when hydrogen as a fuel source has struggled to become a viable option. The technology also faces fresh headwinds. House Republicans are working to roll back financial support for hydrogen power signed into law by former President Biden as part of a larger attempt to dismantle his entire climate agenda.

Qantas makes mercy plea for ******** sackings ‘mistake’
Qantas makes mercy plea for ******** sackings ‘mistake’
Qantas did not deliberately break the law when it illegally sacked 1820 workers and its “mistake” warrants a “mid-range” penalty, a court has been told.
Federal Court Justice Michael Lee has heard final submissions on the penalty to be imposed on Qantas for the biggest case of ******** sackings in *********** history.
Last year, Qantas agreed to pay $120 million to the ground staff as compensation for their economic loss, pain and suffering since their jobs were outsourced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Transport Workers Union is seeking the maximum penalty of $121 million and an order that the money be paid to the union, while Qantas has urged Justice Lee to impose a “mid-range” penalty between $40 million and $80 million.
The airline’s “failure was in the territory of mistake, rather than deliberate breach of the law,” Qantas counsel Justin Gleeson SC told the court.
“The failure has now been exposed and recognised by the contravener, and the contravener has put in place appropriate steps to minimise the risk of the failure occurring again,” he said on Wednesday.
Qantas argued that its actions were driven by “business calamities” caused by the pandemic, not exploitation, and the ******** sackings were the result of a single decision and therefore only one breach of the law.
It also pointed to the $120 million compensation deal and and its expression of contrition for its actions.
On Monday, Qantas chief people officer Catherine Walsh told the court the airline was “deeply sorry” for the impact on the workers, their family and friends and the union.
Mr Gleeson argued the court should not infer negatively from the failure to call Qantas chief executive Vanessa Hudson as a witness, and emphasised concrete steps she had taken, including rebuilding relationships, creating an inclusive culture and public apologies.
“There’s a recognition that a change needed to be made … there was a top down culture which impacted empowerment and a willingness to challenge or speak up on issues or decisions of concern,” he said.
“There’s been a significant refresh of the group leadership team. Seventy per cent are either new to Qantas or to their role or to the (team)”
Most of the submissions at Wednesday’s hearing focused on meetings between senior managers at Qantas, a group management committee meeting and a board meeting.
After initially saying he would aim to deliver a judgment on Friday, Justice Lee reserved his decision.
At a protest at Brisbane Airport on Wednesday, the TWU called on airlines, airports, governments and regulators to ensure fair standards at companies like Swissport, which took over much of the work done by the sacked Qantas workers.
“That work has been shoved off to operators like Swissport, who have a horrific international reputation for maiming workers, for underpaying workers, for wage theft,” TWU national secretary Michael Kaine said.
Recent safety visits revealed that in Brisbane, Swissport has more than 400 safety reports a month, he said.
“The Albanese government must put in place a Safe and Secure Skies Commission to stop the spiral of dangerously low standards and ensure there’s oversight in such a vital industry to our island nation.”

Federal raids in LA target Armenian organized crime syndicate, 13 arrested
The Brief
Federal authorities conducted raids in Los Angeles and Florida, arresting 13 alleged members of an Armenian crime syndicate with Russian ****** ties.
The arrested individuals face federal complaints for crimes including attempted *******, kidnapping, thefts of online retailer shipments, and ******** firearm possession.
Authorities seized cash, armored vehicles, and ******** guns, while one suspect remains on the run.
LOS ANGELES – Federal authorities carried out several raids Tuesday across the Los Angeles area, resulting in multiple arrests of alleged members of an organized Armenian crime ring with Russian ****** ties.
Law enforcement officials in California and Florida carried out the raids and arrested 13 alleged members and associates of an Armenian organized crime syndicate.
What we know
According to a press release from U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli’s office, those arrested are facing five federal complaints for “a series of crimes – including attempted *******, kidnapping, tens of millions of dollars’ worth of thefts of online retailer shipments, and ******** firearm possession – to expand and maintain their control in the San Fernando Valley.”
“This transnational criminal organization operated with the structure and brutality of an international cartel, inflicting significant harm on public safety and causing substantial damage to legitimate commerce and supply chains,” said HSI Los Angeles Acting Deputy Special Agent in Charge Dwayne Angebrandt. “Dismantling transnational criminal organizations is at the core of HSI’s mission, and through close collaboration with our law enforcement partners, we are holding these perpetrators accountable and disrupting their criminal enterprise at every level.”
Charging documents obtained by FOX 11 detail what could be described as an internal power struggle between the crime groups playing out across LA County since 2022. Members allegedly battled for “control in their territory, resulting in multiple ******* attempts and a kidnapping.”
“For a large extent, Armenian organized crime groups tend to be the quieter ones,” said Hal Kempfer, a former Marine intelligence officer. “You don’t hear a lot about them. One of the reasons is they’re very sophisticated. They tend to focus on crimes that get less attention. The Russians on the other hand are notoriously violent.”
The Armenian crime group is also accused of bank fraud, wire fraud, and cargo theft. According to charging documents, they’re accused of diverting and stealing cargo trucks with millions of dollars worth of items from Amazon.
“We’ll see if more comes out of this, but a lot Russian organized crime is tied in with Russian intelligence services,” said Kempfer. “It’s like any other business. There’s a part where you compete, and there’s a part where you cooperate. The Armenians were always good at the cooperation side.”
Authorities Tuesday seized more than $100,000 in cash, three armored vehicles, and ******** guns. One suspect hasn’t been arrested yet.
“Investigators from the Burbank Police Department spent hundreds of hours investigating these heinous violent crimes,” said Burbank Police Chief Rafael Quintero. “The Burbank Police Department is grateful for the assistance from its law enforcement partners and the United States Attorney’s Office for their work in holding these individuals accountable for their actions.”
“Today’s arrests reflect that my office and our law enforcement partners are committed to keeping America safe by dismantling transnational criminal organizations,” said United States Attorney Bill Essayli. “Let today’s enforcement action be a warning to criminals: Our communities are not your playground to engage in violence and thuggery.”

Ransomware attacks dropped by a third last month
Ransomware attacks dropped by a third last month
High-profile ransomware incidents affecting leading *** retailers continue to grab headlines, but in the background, total ransomware attack volumes appear to have eased off over the past few weeks, according to NCC Group’s latest monthly Threat Pulse report.
NCC’s extensive telemetry observed 416 ransomware attacks in April 2025, down 31% month on month, with 78% occurring in Europe and North America, the industrials category remaining the most prominent sector, and the Akira cyber crime crew the most active group on the scene, accounting for 16% of these.
However, although the statistics tell one story, the impact of ransomware was felt much more keenly in general, with incidents affecting the consumer discretionary category – that is to say, retail – and in particular the ongoing attack on Marks and Spencer (M&S), Co-op and Harrods putting ransomware at the forefront of Britain’s national discourse.
These incidents, and a fourth developing attack at Peter Green Chilled – a supplier of cold-chain transit and stock management services to the supermarket sector – has spotlighted threats to the retail sector, which is already of interest to cyber criminals for several reasons, such as its high-profile nature and high-impact potential for disruption, said Matt Hull, NCC threat intelligence head.
“While the number of reported ransomware victims declined further in April, it would be a mistake to assume that this is a sign that the threat is fading,” said Hull.
“The recent attacks on the *** retail sector have laid bare just how disruptive and far-reaching these incidents can be. The reality is that this is only a glimpse of the broader threat landscape. Globally, many ransomware cases still fly under the radar, are under-reported or deliberately kept quiet,” he added.
The recent attacks on the *** retail sector have laid bare just how disruptive and far-reaching these [ransomware] incidents can be
Matt Hull, NCC Group
“Geopolitical and economic uncertainty is also adding fuel to the fire, providing more lucrative targets and opportunities for attackers to strike.”
Active Akira, blustering Babuk
April saw the anime-referencing Akira ransomware gang scoop the dubious accolade for highest volume of attacks, accounting for 65 of those recorded by NCC’s systems. This was followed by Qilin with 49, Play with 42 and Lynx with 27.
Meanwhile, Babuk 2.0, which raised questions earlier in the year as to whether or not it was conducting new attacks or merely recycling data from old ones, dropped away, with just 16 hits to its name.
NCC said it had found that Babuk 2.0 was indeed likely falsifying its data, which is not in and of itself a new strategy. Other gangs have tried this in the past, in general those looking to inflate their notoriety, and this may have been the case here.
The researchers explained that Babuk 2.0’s ransomware claims of attacks on prominent government institutions, and even the likes of Amazon and ******** shopping platform Taobao, were bold ones, but likely nonsense given none of those “affected” confirmed any breaches and have significant security resources of their own. It would also be difficult for any ransomware gang to breach multiple large organisations in this way in such a short space of time.
“Babuk 2.0’s lack of credibility makes such attacks questionable. Upon further investigation by NCC, 119 out of 145 claims made by Babuk 2.0 in Q1 2025 were associated with another ransomware group or could be linked to a previous large-scale breach,” said the researchers.
Actions like this exemplify how ransomware gangs change up their tactics in the hope of scoring a payout, leveraging public relations techniques to attract media attention, placing their alleged victims in the spotlight and damaging their public image. When these tactics work, said NCC’s researchers, it is more often than not because the victim is embarrassed into handing over money to make the problem go away.
Weaponised PDFs
This month’s report also highlighted an emerging danger in the ransomware infection chain – the use of weaponised PDF files, which are beginning to be used at scale to exploit software vulnerabilities, fool users and spread malware. According to Check Point statistics, 22% of malicious email attachments now arrive in the form of a PDF.
It’s more important than ever for organisations to maintain a strong security culture, respond quickly to emerging threats, and adapt to shifting tactics – all the while staying ahead of adversaries that never stop evolving
Matt Hull, NCC Group
NCC said such documents are becoming more deceptive and technically advanced, with the help of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI). Many threat actors are now embedding malicious PDFs tailored to individual recipients into their phishing campaigns.
Unfortunately, this trend looks set to go mainstream, said NCC, because users seem willing to trust PDFs more than other documents, such as Microsoft Office files.
Security teams should consider adapting their policies and educating users on the potential dangers of PDF files, and consider deploying tools such as email gateways with sandboxing and behavioural analysis features, using endpoint detection and response (EDR) to monitor PDF readers, disabling unneeded Javascript functions, and patching Adobe vulnerabilities as they arise – a sequence of three flaws in Acrobat Reader discovered in March likely contributed to the problem.
“It’s only getting harder for individuals and organisations, who need to be forever alert,” said Hull. “In this climate, a strong and embedded security culture is no longer optional; it is a critical enabler of organisational resilience. It’s more important than ever for organisations to maintain a strong security culture, respond quickly to emerging threats and adapt to shifting tactics – all the while staying ahead of adversaries that never stop evolving.”

V-Color puts displays on memory modules
V-Color puts displays on memory modules
When it comes to memory modules for enthusiasts, it really is hard to impress the audience these days as makers of modules have done quite a lot to differentiate their products from competing offerings in the last 15 – 20 years. However, V-Color has managed to do something that stands out: install a programmable LCD screen on their DDR5 DIMMs for enthusiasts. The modules are demonstrated at Computex.
Since V-Color is mostly focused on workstation-grade memory, its brand may not sound as familiar as those of other players, but V-Color’s Xfinity Manta memory modules are clearly aimed at enthusiasts with their increased transfer rates and fancy look.
The key selling point of Xfinity Manta is an LCD screen on the side of the module that displays various information, such as capacity, speed bin, temperature, and voltage. Since the screen is controlled by V-Color’s app, it can display all kind of information that the company deems valuable for the user.

For example, at Computex such modules displayed whether Intel’s Core Ultra 2000-series enabled its 200S boost mode. Note that the ****** bands on the screens are a result of their refresh rates and not a failure.
As the display is placed on one side of the module, this eliminates possibility to place memory chips on that side, which reduces capacities that V-Color can offer. However, for now the company showcases 24 GB dual-channel kits with screens and a couple of such kits will offer a capacity of 48 GB, which will arguably satisfy the needs of most gamers and modding enthusiasts for the time being.
As V-Color’s Xfinity Manta memory modules are aimed at gamers, they of course also feature aluminum heat spreaders with programmable RGB LEDs on top to make them catch the eyes.
Another interesting aspect about V-Color’s Xfinity Manta modules is that some of such dual-channel kits come bundled with two extra ‘filler’ modules that do not carry memory chips, but only RGB LEDs to make the system look more ‘complete.’

For now, V-Color’s Xfinity Manta memory modules with displays are prototypes, though the company expects to bring them to the market both for AMD and Intel platforms later this year. Of course, screens on the side of memory modules add to the cost, but since they represent a unique feature, enthusiasts will likely be willing to pay extra to have it.
The market of enthusiast-grade memory modules has been developing steadily for over 30 years now and over the last 20 years makers of memory modules have done pretty much everything to attract attention to their products. But V-Color seems to be a bit ahead of the curve with its DIMMs equipped with displays.

Strong fintech security posture at risk via third-party weak links
Strong fintech security posture at risk via third-party weak links
Financial technology (fintech) companies have a strong security posture but are at risk from third-party weaknesses, according to analysis.
In its latest report, SecureScorecard stated that the fintech sector ranked highest of all sectors studied when it came to security posture, but it found potential third-party weak links could open the door to security breaches.
The risk management specialist said there is “growing exposure in the financial supply chain as even top-rated fintech firms face systemic third- and fourth-party cyber risks”.
In its report, Defending the financial supply chain: Strengths and vulnerabilities in top fintech companies, SecureScorecard revealed that 41.8% of breaches impacting top fintech companies originated from third-party suppliers, and more than 18% of breaches came via fourth parties – the partners of the fintechs’ partners.
SecureScorecard, which analysed the security posture of 250 fintechs, said the report “highlights the growing disconnect between strong internal controls and external supply chain risk”.
SecureScorecard stated that fintech companies are now “essential components of the global financial infrastructure”, powering payments, wealth management, compliance, fraud detection, and more.
It said today, traditional financial institutions increasingly rely on fintechs to modernise their systems and remain competitive. “This rapid integration has created a new kind of interdependency – one where vulnerabilities in a single vendor can cascade across the broader financial ecosystem. As this report shows, even fintech companies with strong internal cyber security programmes can expose their partners to significant third-party and fourth-party risks,” it stated.
Third-party breaches aren’t edge cases – they reveal structural risk. In fintech, that means operational outages across payment systems, digital asset platforms and core financial infrastructure
Ryan Sherstobitoff, SecureScorecard
The fintechs analysed include companies operating in payments, digital assets, neobanking, financial planning and infrastructure.
“One exposed vendor can take down critical infrastructure,” said Ryan Sherstobitoff, senior vice-president in SecureScorecard’s threat research and intelligence unit. “Third-party breaches aren’t edge cases – they reveal structural risk. In fintech, that means operational outages across payment systems, digital asset platforms and core financial infrastructure.”
Finance firms rely on many third parties to support their operations, and the finance sector is highly interconnected.
One senior security professional, who has 30 years’ experience in the *** banking sector, said attackers target multiple technologies in a highly interconnected industry.
“You’re reliant on software from multiple different suppliers, and it’s the weakest link that’s going to take you down, and that could be anywhere,” he added.
“When you go online and you look at, say, Marks and Spencer’s website, that’s the bit of the iceberg above the water. But below that, there are thousands of components holding it up. That’s where the baddies are going. They’re looking around underwater for the weakest link in the iceberg and then chipping away.”
The security professional said attackers will work their way through the software stack. “You’ve got the operating system at the bottom, then you’ve got network software, then you’ve got security software, and you’ve got various components of applications from multiple suppliers,” he added.
SecureScorecard found that file transfer software and cloud platforms were the most commonly compromised points, with about 46% of companies scoring lowest in application security. It recommended that fintechs strengthen third-party and fourth-party risk oversight, and tier suppliers based on exposure and breach history rather than spend or business value.

Pakistan’s army chief Asim Munir promoted to field marshal after recent skirmishes with India
Pakistan’s army chief Asim Munir promoted to field marshal after recent skirmishes with India
ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan’s powerful army chief, Gen. Asim Munir, has been promoted to the rank of field marshal days after a U.S.-brokered ceasefire between nuclear-armed rivals Pakistan and India following one of their most serious military confrontations in decades.
In a statement, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had also approved the extension of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu’s tenure in recognition of his service.
Sharif has praised Munir and other military leaders for what he described as a “befitting response” to an Indian airstrike on Pakistani air bases in the early hours of May 7.
Munir becomes only the second military officer in Pakistan’s history to hold the title of field marshal. The first was Gen. Ayub Khan, who led the country during the 1965 war with India.
“I am deeply thankful to ****** Almighty for this honour,” Munir said in a statement.
The ceasefire was aimed at ending weeks of escalating clashes, including missile and drone strikes, triggered by the mass shooting of tourists last month that India blamed on Pakistan, which denies the charge.
Nearly 7,500 people from Pakistan and India have since signed a petition calling for dialogue between the two sides. The online appeal, titled “India, Pakistan: Stop the Hostilities,” was launched on May 7 by the South Asia Peace Action Network, a coalition of peace advocates, journalists and citizens.
