Henry Miller and the ‘Light of Greece’ Henry Miller and the ‘Light of Greece’ Henry Miller on the Greek island of Hydra. Credit: Monozigote/Wikimedia Commons Y-SA 4.0 Henry Miller, the author of Tropic of ******* and one of the greatest American writers, was enamored with Greece, and his favorite, self-authored book was a travelogue of the country he loved. The Colossus of Maroussi is an impressionist travel book written in 1939 that reads like an ode to Greece and the time the author spent there. Miller, who lived from 1891 to 1980, was an unconventional writer in every way. He traveled abroad extensively, trying to live outside the restraints of the conservative American society of the 1920s to 1930s. The American writer’s work is full of reflections on society, philosophical inquiry, embellished autobiographical facts, impressionistic meanderings, and graphic descriptions of sex, which was, at that time, a taboo topic in literature in the United States. In 1939, he was invited to Greece by his friend, Lawrence Durrell, the well-known British writer, so he travelled to the Mediterranean country to rejuvenate himself. The nine months he spent in “the home of the gods,” as he describes Greece, were an inspiration, and he considered the book he wrote there to be his greatest literary accomplishment. Paris inspires Henry Miller… A restless spirit, Miller moved to Paris in the 1930s. The French capital was nothing like the conservative United States he left behind. There, he wrote his first two novels, Tropic of ******* (1934) and Tropic of Capricorn (1939), both including sex scenes that made American publishers refuse to publish them. The books that were found to be completely obscene in the 1930s, were finally published in 1961. By then, Miller’s literary genius had received the recognition deserved. …But he finds his muse in Greece Durrell was living with his family on the island of Corfu in Greece when he invited Miller to join him there. The American writer discovered what he referred to as the “home of the gods” in the nine months he spent there. “Greece is the home of the gods; they may have died but their presence still makes itself felt. The gods were of human proportion: they were created out of the human spirit,” he wrote. Accompanied by his British friend, Miller traveled extensively in Greece. He visited Athens, Epidaurus, Mycenae, sailed to Crete and Hydra, and traveled to other parts of the country, feeding his soul. If life in cosmopolitan, carefree pre-war Paris was an inspiration for the American writer, rural Greece was his touchstone with nature, a world full of earthy wonders previously unknown to him. “The light of Greece opened my eyes, penetrated my pores, extended to my whole being. I went back to the world having found the true center and the true meaning of cosmic rotation,” Miller wrote. In The Colossus of Maroussi, Miller wrote about his Greek adventures with Durrell in impressionistic style. He wrote about almost being trampled by a herd of sheep while laying naked on a beach, drinking cool water from sacred springs, and sleeping in hotels full of the past and mildew. Upon his visit to Epidaurus and the ancient theater, the American writer marveled: “I never knew the meaning of peace, until I arrived at Epidaurus…I am talking of course of the peace that passeth all understanding. There is no other kind.” But among his epiphanies in Greece and his many adventures, his meeting with the true Colossus of Maroussi, the main theme of Miller’s book on Greece, was his inspiration. The Colossus of Maroussi The man that was the inspiration for the title of Henry Miller’s book about Greece was none other than Giorgos (George) Katsimbalis (1899-1978). A larger than life character, Katsimbalis was an intellectual, writer, and editor of modern Greek literature bibliography. Being friends with Durrell, the British writer introduced Katsimbalis to Miller, and the two men hit it off instantly. Katsimbalis “could galvanize the dead with his talk,” Miller said about his new Greek friend admiringly. Soon enough, a circle of artists, poets, and writers formed around Miller, Katsimbalis, and Durrell. The intellectual company was joined by Nobel laureate poet Giorgos Seferis and the renowned painter, sculptor, and writer Nikos Hatzikyriakos Ghikas. Yet, the protagonist in the book is the Colossus Katsimbalis although some critics say that the book is a self-portrait of Miller himself on a journey of a lifetime in an unforgettable place. Miller writes in The Colossus of Maroussi: Marvelous things happen to one in Greece—marvelous good things which can happen to one nowhere else on earth. Somehow, almost as if He were nodding, Greece still remains under the protection of the Creator. Men may go about their puny, ineffectual bedevilment, even in Greece, but God’s magic is still at work[,] and…no matter what the race of man may do or try to do, Greece is still a sacred precinct—and my belief is it will remain so until the end of time. The last lines of The Colossus of Maroussi read like both a declaration and an admonition: Greece herself may become embroiled as we ourselves are now becoming embroiled, but I refuse categorically to become anything less than the citizen of the world which I silently declared myself to be when I stood in Agamemnon’s tomb. From that day forth[,] my life was dedicated to the recovery of the divinity of man. Peace to all men, I say, and life more abundant! Return to the United States After his life-changing journey to Greece, Miller returned to the United States. The Colossus of Maroussi was published in 1941. It was his third book and his favorite. Miller had left Greece, but he still carried it inside him: Greece had done something for me which New York, nay, even America itself, could never destroy. Greece has made me free and whole…To those who think that Greece to-day is of no importance[,] let me say that no greater error could be committed. In 1954, the “Colossus,” Giorgos Katsimbalis, traveled to the United States under the Smith-Mundt Act and stayed at Miller’s house in Big Sur, California. Katsimbalis loved the area, later writing “I stayed at his place for two days. It’s a dream place. I will be forever grateful to him for allowing me to see one of the best corners of the world.” Source link #Henry #Miller #Light #Greece Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

These 4 U.S. Regions Are Poised for a “Scorching Hot” Summer—Is Yours One of Them? These 4 U.S. Regions Are Poised for a “Scorching Hot” Summer—Is Yours One of Them? Curious whether your summer vacation is going to be perfectly mild and sunny or if you need to brace yourself for monsoon-level rains and a glued-to-the-TV hurricane season? Unfortunately, most weather apps only prepare you with a 10-day forecast, which doesn’t do much good if you’re looking for a temperature check on the entire season. Those long-term predictions are when we turn to an old staple: The Old Farmer’s Almanac. First published in 1792, this book was the reference for those looking to brush up on trends and news in gardening, sports, and more, but it was also the place to find semi-reliable insights on what the twelve months ahead might look like. At one time, it was the guiding force for farmers to make decisions about their upcoming planting season. And, while the technology for making predictions has changed, the general ethos behind The Almanac remains the same. Weather forecasts are made once a year using historical weather patterns and tidal records, as well as the disciplines of solar science, climatology, and meteorology, to anticipate how the seasons will behave. These predictions are said to be accurate 80% of the time. So what’s in store for Summer 2025? Keep reading for overall weather predictions from The Farmer’s Almanac, as well a breakdown of summer weather patterns by region. Farmer’s Almanac Summer 2025 Weather Predictions If you love embracing all of summer’s sunshine and heat, then get your pool bag ready. This summer is going to be h-o-t, hot. Sky-high temperatures should set in just in time for summer’s unofficial peak in July and August, so plan your travels accordingly. The Old Farmer’s Almanac is predicting hot and dry conditions across the majority of the country throughout the summer. Only the southernmost tip of Florida, the Pacific Northwest, and the southern half of Alaska will face cooler-than-usual temperatures. Meanwhile, parts of the Midwest and Northeast are looking at hot, rainy conditions — it’s not the heat that’ll get ya, it’s the humidity. Summer 2025 Weather Predictions by Region Note: Locations not mentioned below are predicted to have a hot and dry summer. Region 1: The Northeast, which includes Maine, western Massachusetts, New Hampshire, eastern New York, and Maine will have a hot, rainy, wet summer with high humidity. Region 5: Most of Florida will have an unsurprisingly hot summer, but southern Florida will face cool, wet conditions and hurricane potential. Region 6: The Lower Lakes, which includes eastern Illinois, northern Indiana, Michigan, and northern Ohio, will have an unusually rainy summer. Region 7: The Ohio Valley, including southern Illinois, southern Indiana, Kentucky, southern Ohio, and western West Virginia, will have a wet summer. Region 8: Of course, it’s going to be hot in the Deep South, including Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee, but this year will be even more of a scorcher than normal. Region 10: The Heartland, otherwise known as eastern Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, and eastern Nebraska, will have a hot, dry summer. Temperatures are predicted to be 4°F above normal. Region 11: Texas and Oklahoma are going to be looking for relief this summer, with predictions lined up for these two states to be the hottest in the entire country. Region 13: The Intermountain region, which includes western Colorado, western Montana, eastern Oregon, and eastern Washington, will be cooler and rainy this summer. Region 14: If you’re in the Desert Southwest, also known as the area from southern California to western Texas, you’re going to face more-sweltering-then-normal temperatures. Region 15: The Pacific Northwest, including western Washington and Oregon, is the place to be this summer, with cool, dry temperatures. Region 17: Head to Alaska, and you’ll see dry weather in the north, with wet weather in the south. Both areas will be cooler than normal. Region 18: Hawaii is going to be wet this summer but, depending on where you are, it could be cooler or hotter. The Big Island will have a hotter than average summer, and the islands will be cooler. Apple to Reportedly Allow Developers to Use Its AI Models for App Creation at WWDC 2025 Apple to Reportedly Allow Developers to Use Its AI Models for App Creation at WWDC 2025 Apple is reportedly planning to let third-party developers build apps using its proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) models. As per the report, the Cupertino-based tech giant wants to open its AI model, which also powers Apple Intelligence features, in hopes that more AI-powered apps appear on its marketplace. With more apps that use AI capabilities, the company is said to believe that it could invigorate consumer interest in devices that offer Apple Intelligence. The announcement regarding this will reportedly be made at the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) 2025. Third-Party Apple Developers Might Soon Get Access to Its AI Models According to a Bloomberg report by Mark Gurman, the tech giant is working on a new software development kit (SDK) and associated frameworks that will let third-party developers either build new AI-powered apps or integrate AI features in existing apps. Citing unnamed people familiar with the matter, the publication highlighted that this new SDK could be unveiled at WWDC 2025, scheduled for June 9. Apple might start with opening its smaller language models (SLMs), and later allow access to its larger, foundation models, as per the report. These models are already powering several Apple Intelligence features in iOS and macOS, such as Writing Tools, Image Playground, and Genmoji. With the new SDK, third-party developers are also said to introduce similar features in their apps. Third-party developers making new AI-powered apps also help the company in the long run. Currently, the iPhone maker is struggling to push out enough practical AI features to increase the adoption of Apple Intelligence. The long-awaited AI-powered Siri is still under development and has faced multiple delays. A recent report now claims that the company might not discuss Siri upgrades at WWDC at all. Apart from this, the tech giant is also expected to showcase new features in the next iteration of iOS, macOS, and other operating systems. One such feature in iOS 19 could be a new AI-powered battery management mode. It is said that the feature collects data from users’ phones to gauge behavioural patterns, and subsequently allocates power efficiently and increases battery life. Turn off popular feature and take these steps for safety Turn off popular feature and take these steps for safety Apple’s AirPlay feature is beloved by many users — but it can leave you vulnerable to hackers. Researchers at cybersecurity firm Oligo found major security flaws in Apple AirPlay that allow hackers to ******* compatible devices on the same Wi-Fi network. AirPlay allows users to seamlessly stream audio, video or photos from their Apple device to another Apple device or third-party gadgets that integrate the protocol. The 23 vulnerabilities, dubbed “AirBorne,” were found both in Apple’s AirPlay protocol and the AirPlay Software Development Kit (SDK) used by third-party vendors to make devices AirPlay compatible, Wired reported. Researchers demonstrated in a video how vulnerabilities can be exposed to hackers by accessing an AirPlay-enabled Bose speaker on the same network and remotely executing a Remote Code Execution (RCE) attack, showing the “AirBorne” logo on the speaker’s display. They claimed that hackers realistically can use a similar strategy to gain access to devices with microphones for espionage. Oligo CTO Gal Elbaz told Wired that the total number of exposed devices could potentially be in the millions. “Because AirPlay is supported in such a wide variety of devices, there are a lot that will take years to patch — or they will never be patched,” Elbaz explained. “And it’s all because of vulnerabilities in one piece of software that affects everything.” Oligo CTO Gal Elbaz told Wired that the total number of exposed devices could potentially be in the millions. Gorodenkoff – stock.adobe.com The risks were reported to Apple in the late fall and winter of last year, and Oligo worked with the tech giant for months on fixes before publishing their findings Tuesday. Apple devices with iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, macOS Ventura 13.7.5, macOS Sonoma 14.7.5, macOS Sequoia 15.4 and visionOS 2.4 had fixes rolled out on March 31. However, third-party devices that support AirPlay protocol remain vulnerable. The researchers said that manufacturers would need to roll out updates for users to install themselves in order to avoid being exposed to hackers. AirPlay allows users to seamlessly stream audio, video or photos from their Apple device to another device. DenPhoto – stock.adobe.com Apple told Wired that it created patches available for these third-party devices, but it emphasized that there are “limitations” to the attacks that would be possible on AirPlay-enabled devices due to the bugs. CarPlay-equipped systems are also at risk, the researchers noted, since hackers can carry out an RCE attack if they are near the unit and “the device has a default, predictable, or known Wi-Fi hotspot password.” According to the report, there are several ways to help protect your device from the threat of hackers: Update your devices: Researchers stressed that devices and other machines that support AirPlay need to be updated immediately to the latest software versions to mitigate potential security risks. Disable AirPlay Receiver: Oligo recommends fully disabling the AirPlay feature when not in use. Only AirPlay to trusted devices: Limit AirPlay communication and stream content to only trusted devices. Restrict AirPlay Settings: Go to Settings > AirPlay & Continuity (or AirPlay & Handoff) and select Current User for the “Allow AirPlay for” option. “While this does not prevent all of the issues mentioned in the report, it does reduce the protocol’s attack surface,” researchers noted. Disable on public Wi-Fi: It’s best to avoid enabling or using AirPlay when on a public Wi-Fi network. Indian plane makes safe landing despite significant damage during hailstorm Indian plane makes safe landing despite significant damage during hailstorm An Indian passenger jet that encountered a hailstorm mid-flight and left passengers terrified, made a safe landing, despite significant damage to the plane. The IndiGo plane was traveling from Indian capital New Delhi to Srinagar, the largest city in India-administered Kashmir on Wednesday – a flight that typically takes about an hour and a half – when it was met with “a sudden hailstorm en route,” according to a statement from IndiGo. “The flight and cabin crew followed established protocol, and the aircraft landed safely in Srinagar,” it said. The statement did not specify what damage the plane encountered but photographs of the aircraft show a large hole in the nose. Delhi experienced widespread rain, lightning, and thunderstorms Wednesday night. Video taken by a passenger, Sheikh Samiullah, and posted to X shows widespread panic and fear the moment the plane encountered the hail, causing severe turbulence that rattled the inside of the aircraft. People can be heard screaming and children can be heard crying as the plane shakes violently. The flight was going smoothly and passengers assumed they would arrive in Srinagar within 30 minutes when the pilot made a fasten seatbelt announcement, Samiullah told the Press Trust of India news agency. “There was so much turbulence that I thought it was my last flight. Everyone thought we would ******. It was such a traumatic experience,” he said. “I am a frequent flier, but I’ve never experienced anything like this. We are very thankful to the pilot for landing safely.” Samiullah described his shock at seeing the plane’s condition when he got off. “After we deboarded and saw the plane’s damage, it was even more traumatic,” he said. “I wish no one goes through an experience like this.” Incidents like these are not uncommon, said Mary Schiavo, a CNN transportation analyst and former inspector general of the US Department of Transportation. Hail can cause significant damage to planes, including breaching the nose and damaging the windshield, but despite this, many planes have been able to land safely, she said. Sometimes bad weather doesn’t show up on the radar “and you’re in the hail before you know it,” Shiavo said. “There have been other planes where the hail has beaten the nose in or beaten pieces of the nose off. And while (the plane) can lose equipment, the important thing is they still have the control.” Shiavo described how the pilot would have had to manually fly the plane in a “stressful” situation. “The performance of the plane will be impacted (by the hail). They have to make sure they keep it under control,” she said. “And of course, they have to worry if more can go wrong other than losing the nose… It’ll be a very stressful event but it’s amazing the planes… can make it through that.” Incidents of severe turbulence have made headlines in the past, including one from Singapore Airlines last year, when a passenger died and more than 70 were injured. $30B AI Opportunity: Will It Power Meta’s Next Surge? $30B AI Opportunity: Will It Power Meta’s Next Surge? Magnificent Seven giant Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:) has been no stranger to Wall Street analyst upgrades lately. After the company’s last earnings report, nearly 20 analysts tracked by MarketBeat increased their price targets on the stock. More recently, analysts at Wolfe Research issued a substantial price target update on Meta of $750. This implies a significant potential upside in Meta shares of nearly 18% from its May 20 closing price. Mark Zuckerberg recently shared five key AI growth opportunities for the company. This makes an earlier piece of Wolfe’s research particularly relevant. Wolfe has referenced the huge growth potential of one opportunity that Zuckerberg mentioned: business messaging. It sees business messaging as a possible $30–$40 billion opportunity for Meta. Zuckerberg’s recent comments suggest that business messaging might help Meta hit Wolfe’s $750 12-month price target. This analysis will break down Meta’s ambitions in business messaging and show just how powerful they could be for the tech stock. Over a Third of the World Population Is Using WhatsApp Aside from Facebook and Instagram, Meta also owns possibly the world’s most-used direct messaging app, WhatsApp. In Meta’s Q1 2025 earnings call, Zuckerberg stated that WhatsApp has over 3 billion monthly active users. That is equal to around 38% of the world’s population of 8 billion. Zuckerberg also said that more than one billion people use Facebook Messenger every month. Additionally, users send just as many messages on Instagram each day as they do on Messenger. He summed up this massive user count and activity data by saying, “So, Business messaging should be the next pillar of our business.” It looks like Meta is gearing up to start aggressively monetizing its huge messaging user base. This could kick off the path toward Meta executing on Wolfe’s massive total addressable market revenue estimates in this space. Wolfe estimates that Meta is only generating around $1.5 billion to $2 billion in annual revenue from WhatsApp. That lines up with Meta’s latest earnings. Meta’s Other Family of Apps Revenue, which houses WhatsApp, generated around $1.8 billion over the last 12 months. It also generated $510 million in revenue last quarter, growing by 34% from a year ago. Wolfe’s Estimates Indicate a Huge Opportunity for Meta Although the timeline around which Wolfe sees Meta achieving $30–$40 billion in business messaging revenue is uncertain, it could clearly be a huge growth driver for Meta. At the midpoints of Wolfe’s estimates, this would mean a 20x increase in Meta’s business messaging revenue. Additionally, $35 billion in business messaging revenue would be equal to over 20% of the $170 billion that Meta generated in the last 12 months. Meta intends to increase the monetization of business messaging using AI. Zuckerberg envisions every company using an “AI business agent.” This agent handles customer service and runs sales campaigns through direct messaging. Meta would then presumably charge companies to do this through its messaging apps. Meta has already seen companies in Thailand and Vietnam using its messaging apps to aid their business. However, they use humans to do so because the cost of labor in those countries is low. The company believes that the use of AI agents can make doing this profitable in developed countries. However, Meta’s focus on monetizing AI in developed countries is somewhat curious. Only around 100 million of WhatsApp’s 3 billion monthly active users are in the United States. Additionally, data shows that most WhatsApp users are in emerging economies. If these economies already have low labor costs, will AI agents really change the adoption of business messaging? While they might not make a difference in whether business messaging is profitable overall in these countries, there is a solid chance they could raise profitability, thus increasing adoption. This remains to be seen, as Meta is currently testing these AI features. Additionally, an amount of 100 million users is still around 30% of the population in the United States, meaning there is a big opportunity at home as well. With Proper Execution, Business Messaging Could Be Meta’s Next Big Hit Overall, Meta’s business messaging ambitions should be a key area of focus for investors going forward. However, it seems reasonable to pump the brakes on Wolfe’s huge forecasts in this area until more tangible results for Meta’s AI agents surface. If successful, business messaging represents a huge possible growth opportunity for one of the most dominant technology names in the world. Father exposes teacher’s alleged abuse of teen student Father exposes teacher’s alleged abuse of teen student Further alleged ******* abuse by a female teacher accused of raping her student has been uncovered by the teen’s father, a court has been told. Monique Kieuoanh Nguyen, 29, is accused of abusing a 17-year-old male student at a Sydney school between January and April 2024. Arrested on May 22, 2024, she was originally charged with ******* intercourse with a young person under her care. She has since been hit with nine further charges of intentionally ********* touching the boy and one charge of inciting him to touch her. This alleged misconduct was uncovered by the teen’s father who alerted police, Parramatta Local Court was told on Thursday. “The father in that family, regularly – I think monthly – downloads the messages of each person in his family and reviews them,” Nguyen’s solicitor Mickaela Mate said. Ms Mate argued her client should be repaid her “quite significant” legal costs. Despite multiple adjournments and legal work done for the past six months, prosecutors still did not even know how many charges would be laid, she said. “To put it in plain English, I just can’t believe how it’s taken them this long.” Nguyen’s phone records of chats with the student would have been obtained by police in May 2024, she told the court. Instead her client had to deal with allegations coming at her at a staggered pace without being told beforehand that the case had to be adjourned. Nguyen was allowed to watch the proceedings by audiovisual link from what appeared to be a classroom containing a whiteboard. Crown prosecutor Matthew Dickinson said the Director of Public Prosecutions had only been given the phone records of the alleged victim six months ago. Technical difficulties prevented the DPP from opening a digital version and police had to provide 16,500 text messages in hard-copy, he said. It had taken time to review all those messages, Mr Dickinson told the court. Further charges could be laid, including in relation to alleged child abuse material after at least one reference to the boy’s genitalia was found in the texts, the court heard. Magistrate Peter Feather declined to award Nguyen’s costs, noting the length of time required to read all the messages. The matter will return to court on July 17. 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732) National ******* Abuse and Redress Support Service 1800 211 028 Source link #Father #exposes #teachers #alleged #abuse #teen #student Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Unlikely for ‘Trump put’ to staunch market sell-off Unlikely for ‘Trump put’ to staunch market sell-off U.S. President Donald Trump, accompanied by Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, speaking to the media as he departs a House Republican meeting at the U.S. Capitol on May 20, 2025, in Washington, D.C. Andrew Harnik | Getty Images News | Getty Images It’s one bad headline after another coming from the White House these days. Just as the tariff-related turmoil rocking markets subsided — and only temporarily, since the clock is still ticking on the pause on “reciprocal tariffs” — fears of ballooning U.S. debt are sparking another broad sell-off in markets. This time, investors are wary because President Donald Trump’s tax bill is projected to add $3 trillion to $5 trillion to the U.S. debt, reported Reuters, citing nonpartisan analysts. A fiscally challenged U.S. means investors will demand higher returns to hold the country’s debt. Indeed, Treasury yields jumped Wednesday. The 30-year Treasury bond yield crossed the 5% level for the second time this week and the 10-year traded at 4.61%, the highest since February. While rising yields mean bond prices drop, they also promise higher returns at potentially lower risks, dulling the allure of stocks. Under pressure from spiking Treasury yields — which mean elevated borrowing costs for companies and consumers — U.S. markets sold off Wednesday, a sharp reversal from the rally beginning May 12 which gave the S&P 500 a six-day win streak. Unlike tariffs, which Trump seems to be able to conjure or dismiss unilaterally at a wave of his hand, a tax bill needs to pass through the different layers of the government and be agreed on by fractious politicians. It’s hard to imagine a “Trump put” happening here. What you need to know today Sell-off in U.S. marketsU.S. markets tumbled Wednesday on worries over the country’s deteriorating fiscal health. The S&P 500 lost 1.61%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.91% and the Nasdaq Composite gave up 1.41%. Treasury yields spiked, with the 30-year yield hitting 5.085%, the highest since October 2023, while the 10-year yield traded at 4.607%, a level not seen since February. Threat of U.S. debt widening The U.S. debt-and-deficit situation is bad and facing real prospects of getting worse, triggering a high-profile credit rating downgrade from Moody’s and another selling stampede in stocks and bonds, writes CNBC’s Jeff Cox. If U.S. President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful” spending bill passes, there are concerns the U.S. deficit could widen even more and keep Treasury yields high. Bitcoin surpasses previous highBitcoin prices popped 3.2% during Asia trading hours to hit a new high of $111,416, according to Coin Metrics, breaking its January record. Elsewhere in markets, Asia-Pacific markets fell Thursday. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Tech index, which comprises the 30 largest Hong Kong-listed technology companies, declined around 1.4%. That’s despite shares of ******** electric vehicle maker Xpeng surging roughly 6.6% Thursday following upbeat earnings and stronger-than-expected guidance for the second quarter, which prompted analysts to grow more optimistic on its stock. OpenAI snaps up Jony Ive’s startupOpenAI said in a blog post Wednesday that it’s buying former Apple Chief Design Officer Jony Ive’s artificial intelligence devices startup io for about $6.4 billion in an all-equity deal. OpenAI said it’s paying $5 billion in the transaction, as it already owns 23% of the company. The deal brings OpenAI into the world of hardware, and underscores the growing sense in Silicon Valley that smart AI assistants could upend the gadget world. U.S. chip export controls a ‘failure’: Nvidia CEONvidia CEO Jensen Huang on Wednesday said at an AI trade show in Taiwan that U.S. chip export controls are a “failure” and warned that the restrictions are doing more damage to American business than to China. Huang added that the policies have cut the AI chip leader’s China market share from 95% to 50% and motivated Beijing to make its own chips faster. Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty Images Emerging markets said to see the next bull run as the ‘sell U.S.’ narrative gains ground Emerging markets stocks are in the spotlight again as the “sell U.S.” narrative gained fresh momentum, following Moody’s recent downgrade of the U.S. credit rating. “Weaker U.S. dollar, U.S. bond yield top, China economic recovery … nothing will work better than emerging market stocks,” Bank of America’s team, led by investment strategist Michael Hartnett, said in a note. Similarly, JPMorgan upgraded emerging market equities from neutral to overweight on Monday, citing thawing U.S.-China trade tensions and attractive valuations. Erosion of confidence in U.S. assets, with a sell-off in U.S. Treasurys, equities and greenback, has fueled the bullishness for emerging markets. Mahindra utes clock up million-kilometre milestone Mahindra utes clock up million-kilometre milestone A fleet of Mahindra Pik-Up utes are among the hardest working vehicles in Australia. Newcastle-based Valley Express, a professional courier service that specialises in working with the *********** mining industry, has been recognised by Mahindra this week for its loyalty after one of its Pik-Up utes recently clocked up more than a million kilometres. Valley Express initially purchased five Mahindra Pik-Ups in 2021 to deliver equipment across the country, with the remaining four others also close to approaching the seven-figure milestone. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert The freight company was so impressed by the reliability of the utes that it added another two more last year. “We have been really pleased with the performance of the Mahindra Pik-Up ute,” the Valley Express director Megan Hinds told CarExpert. “The value for money is what attracted us to them in the first place. Essentially we can get two of these utes for the price of one well-known alternative. “And since we’ve had them, they have proven to be extremely reliable which is critical for our business.” Valley Express labels itself as an ‘urgent’ freight company that assists with delivering anything from a small satchel to heavy equipment for breakdown repairs. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert Its Mahindra Pik-Ups have travelled across the country from their Newcastle base, as far afield as Alice Springs, Far North Queensland and Western Australia. “Each car covers approximately 5000-7000 kilometres a week, or around 250,000km a year, and they are on the road 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” added Hinds. Each Pik-Up is fully serviced weekly by Hunter Valley Mahindra in Rutherford. “We have had to do a bit of maintenance with them over that time, and replaced the gearbox on each of them every 250,000km or so,” said Hinds. “But that has been more of a preventative measure, other than general wear and tear and consumables like tyres and brakes. We haven’t had a vehicle off the road or let us down on the job. Camera IconMahindra’s Shivank Bargoti (L) with Valley Express’ Megan Hinds (R) Credit: CarExpert “They are all still running the original engine, with the same fuel-injectors, turbochargers, alternators and power steering pumps.” Mahindra Automotive’s Shivank Bargoti visited Valley Express earlier this week to recognise the longevity milestone of the company’s vehicles, and to present Hinds and her team with a series of million-kilometres plaques for the utes. “Valley Express has been a loyal Mahindra customer for years, and their million-kilometre fleet highlights what the Pik-Up was built for – dependable performance at exceptional value,” said Bargoti. “This kind of longevity doesn’t happen by accident. It’s what makes Mahindra stand out in the real working world.” MORE: Everything Mahindra Source link #Mahindra #utes #clock #millionkilometre #milestone Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Bitcoin Hits All-Time High Before Crashing. Ethereum and Dogecoin Are Along for the Ride Down. Bitcoin Hits All-Time High Before Crashing. Ethereum and Dogecoin Are Along for the Ride Down. Bitcoin hit an all-time high today but that didn’t last long. The drop in Bitcoin and crypto more broadly was driven by a weak bond auction from the Treasury Department, which caused a market drop across the board. 10 stocks we like better than Bitcoin › Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) was on fire early in the day on Wednesday, only to ****** as the market dropped. Investors were reminded that Bitcoin doesn’t run the world, the bond market does, and that was apparent today. The big news was a weak 20-year Treasury auction from the U.S. Treasury that resulted in a big spike in bond yields. And higher yields typically mean investors are fleeing from high-risk assets to safer assets. Crypto advocates may think Bitcoin is a “safe” asset, but history tells us that Bitcoin trades correlated with growth stocks and isn’t a safe haven if there’s a recession or the market drops. Bitcoin’s jump to $109,722 happened just before 1 p.m. ET, just before the 20-year auction took place. The value dropped to $106,307 within minutes and is now down to $107,191 as I’m writing. Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) took a similar path, falling 5% to $2,480 in a few minutes and Dogecoin (CRYPTO: DOGE) dropped 5.6% peak to trough and is now at $0.226 per token. Image source: Getty Images. As much as crypto advocates would like to think cryptocurrencies are a hedge against the market, the reality is crypto is very correlated with growth stocks. You can see that in the movement of Bitcoin and the Vanguard Growth Index ETF over the past three years. Bitcoin Price data by YCharts And the same correlation holds when the market fell in late 2021 into 2022. Bitcoin Price data by YCharts As bond values fall (because yields are rising), it’s likely investors pull back from growth stocks and risky assets like cryptocurrencies. We’re seeing that in a small move today, but don’t be surprised if it gets worse. The concern for investors is that bond markets are sending a warning. When yields jump like this it’s an indication investors are seeing rising risk in Treasuries. This could be because they’re not seeing the dollar as the safe haven it once was or there’s higher risk of rising rates in the future because of inflation. Those higher rates would be because the Federal Reserve has to fight inflation caused by tariffs. And with companies already starting to make decisions about holiday purchases, it’s likely that higher prices will start flowing to consumers relatively soon. When that shows up in the data, it’s likely too late, and the market is reacting before conditions get bad. Story Continues Higher prices are what led to the market’s ****** in 2022 as consumers pulled back, companies cut spending, and the economy slowed. But a recession was avoided in part because labor markets were still tight and stimulus money was still flowing. That may not be the case this time around. There have been a lot of tailwinds for the crypto industry from the election to rising markets, but this could be a new paradigm. If the U.S. goes into a tariff-induced recession and interest rates rise, rather than fall as you would expect in a recession, there will be massive fallout. Holding cryptocurrencies may be the last thing investors want to do in that environment and that’s why there’s so much volatility in a down market. Expect that to continue if bond yields rise and stocks fall in 2025. Wallaroos look for World Cup measure against Canada Wallaroos look for World Cup measure against Canada With the Rugby World Cup three months away, the Wallaroos are determined not to take a backward step when they face Canada in their final round of the Pacific Four tournament. The *********** women tackle the Canadians at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium on Friday, looking to make a dent in a 0-6 win-loss record. While the Canada’s men’s team are ranked outside the top 20, their women are a rugby powerhouse, sitting at world No.2 – above world champions New Zealand, who they drew with last round. Canada’s set-piece and rolling maul are their major weapons, while the Wallaroos will look to get sevens superstar Charlotte Caslick heavily involved in her first start at inside centre. “We know Canada are going to be physical and be on a high, with the draw last week with the ****** Ferns,” Wallaroos skipper Siokapesi Palu said at their final training session in Brisbane. The Wallaroos are going into the match with confidence high after a rousing win over the USA in Canberra last round while in their first match of the tournament they also delivered an improved performance against the ****** Ferns, who they have also never beaten. “We’re confident with what we produced last week and in the weeks before so we know what we need to do, it’s just a matter of executing on the night when it matters,” said Palu. “A win gives us huge confidence but it’s the way we won, knowing that we had to front up physically is something that we need to take into this game.” Brumbies flanker Palu said it was important to keep improving ahead of their World Cup opener, against Samoa in Manchester in August. The Wallaroos have a potential Cup quarter-final match-up with Canada. “Growth is a massive focus for us, which you can see as we shift and change different people in different positions – we’re trying to build connections and depth,” she said. “We saw where we kind of sat with the New Zealand team and it shows that there has been a lot of progress. “This game will definitely be crucial ahead of the World Cup but there’s still a few more games for all of us to play so we don’t know what can happen in that time.” Source link #Wallaroos #World #Cup #measure #Canada Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Bitcoin price hits new record high above $111,000 Bitcoin price hits new record high above $111,000 Romain Costaseca | Afp | Getty Images Bitcoin continued its rally on Thursday, hitting a brand new record high above $111,000. Bitcoin hit $111,886.41 in early trading hours in London, according to Coin Metrics, before paring some of those gains to trade at around $111,012.00 at 07:03 a.m. London. Bitcoin’s move has been “driven by a mix of positive momentum, growing optimism around U.S. crypto regulation, and continued interest from institutional buyers,” James Butterfill, head of research for crypto-focused asset manager CoinShares, told CNBC by email. The price rise in world’s largest cryptocurrency is taking place despite a drop in U.S. stock markets on Wednesday. Bitcoin has typically correlated with equity markets, particularly the tech-heavy Nasdaq. The diverging movements of bitcoin and stocks could be the result of investors looking for alternative stores of value. “The rally was also helped along by broader macro concerns, including Moody’s recent downgrade of U.S. sovereign debt, which added to the narrative of Bitcoin as a hedge against fiat instability,” Butterfill noted.
