activity, and overall diet quality to isolate the impact of UPF consumption on mortality risk.
As the consumption of UPFs has surged, children are increasingly neglecting the whole foods essential for their health. 141 142 Approximately 50% of children ages 2 to 18 skip discrete fruit entirely on any given day. 143 Research consistently shows that key micronutrients such as calcium, iron, potassium, and vitamin D, which are found in fruits and vegetables, are essential for children’s physiological functioning.1
144 145 146
Research also consistently links diets centered on whole foods to lower rates of obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, certain cancers, and mental illness. 147 148 This is not surprising. Diet and lifestyle significantly influence gene expression and cellular biology – ultimately determining our health outcomes. 149 150 For instance:
• Leafy greens supply magnesium and folate critical for energy production and other benefits.151
Salmon delivers omega-3 fatty acids that help reduce cardiovascular risk and support brain health. 152 153
• Legumes offer fiber and resistant starch that help nourish beneficial gut bacteria. 154 155

Congressman Details How Trump Strong-Arms Votes In House, And It Sounds Spot-On
Congressman Details How Trump Strong-Arms Votes In House, And It Sounds Spot-On
Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-Pa.) on Wednesday described President Donald Trump’s tactics to bully Republican House members who don’t vote his way. (Watch the video below.)
Boyle correctly predicted the House would eventually pass Trump’s so-called One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which would slash $1 trillion from federal health and food programs while solidifying $4 trillion in tax cuts for mostly wealthier Americans.
But Boyle’s version of how the president reverses the votes of recalcitrant Republicans is a must to check out.
“I have seen time and time again House Republican members saying they’re a ‘no’ at the outset, and then suddenly they get a tap on the shoulder,” Boyle told MSNBC “All In” host Chris Hayes. “They’re dragged out of the House floor and back to their Republican members’ cloak room, and they’re handed a cellphone, and it’s Donald Trump literally yelling at them and cursing at them.”
Whether or not the president used his alleged high-volume powers of persuasion this time around, Boyle’s forecast that any GOP holdouts would cave appeared to come true.
“I tend to think that that history will repeat itself, and that one way or the other, they’ll be able to get the votes,” he said before the all-night session. “I hope I’m wrong. I pray that I’m wrong. I’m going to fight like hell to make sure this awful policy doesn’t become law. But I’ve just seen them fold too many times before to believe that they won’t fold again this time.”
The bill faces an uncertain future in the Senate.

Donkey Kong’s Old Look Isn’t Dead Quite Yet
Donkey Kong’s Old Look Isn’t Dead Quite Yet
With the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, Nintendo introduced a more playful and expressive Donkey Kong that differed from the Rare-created version of the character that lasted for almost three decades. Then, this year has seen the redesigned Donkey Kong not only featured in Mario Kart World, but also a brand-new adventure with Donkey Kong Bananza. That said, Donkey Kong’s old look hasn’t been barreled up for good.
On Instagram, Nintendo of America shared a new photo (the third one below) of Shigeru Miyamoto posing with the Rare-designed Donkey Kong at Super Nintendo World in Universal Orlando. The brand-new theme park just opened to the public. As such, one might expect the Donkey Kong costume to sport the character’s refreshed look, but that’s not the case.
One major reason for the old look might be because Super Nintendo World features a Donkey Kong Country section. Donkey Kong Country is the 1994 SNES game in which Rare crafted its take on the iconic character. So, it makes sense a theme park based on that world features the same version of Donkey Kong. Nintendo also released Donkey Kong Country Returns HD earlier this year for Switch.
Interestingly, Miyamoto chatted about Donkey Kong’s evolution earlier this week with IGN. “And going back to the design that Rare came up with, we re-evaluated; what can we do with the design to make it more expressive? And then when it comes to the movie, we decided to move forward with this new-generation Donkey Kong design,” explained Miyamoto.
The old Donkey Kong can be seen in person at Super Nintendo World in Universal Orlando. Meanwhile, the new Donkey Kong will be featured in Mario Kart World when it launches June 5, alongside Switch 2. Donkey Kong Bananza is then set to release July 17.

The big story
U.S. President Donald Trump has never been the one to hold back an opinion.
“I had a little problem with Tim Cook yesterday,” Trump said on a trip to Qatar last week, referring to a conversation he had with Apple’s chief executive about the company’s decision to move iPhone manufacturing from China to India, rather than the United States.
“I don’t want you building in India,” Trump said he told Cook, after news emerged of Apple’s decision to ramp up production in India with the aim of making around 25% of global iPhones in the country in the next few years, and reduce reliance on China, where around 90% of its flagship smartphone is currently assembled.
While India has certainly emerged as a significant, albeit nascent, hub for electronics assembly, the path to it becoming a clear-cut alternative to China isn’t a guaranteed outcome, despite U.S. tariffs on ******** goods.
Geopolitical upheavals appear to be one of the many such hurdles for India, as well as businesses eyeing the country.
For Apple, moving manufacturing to the United States, instead of India, from China still remains within the realm of possibilities, even if improbable for the company.
If Apple were to move final assembly to the United States, iPhone costs could increase by 25% due to higher U.S. labor costs, according to analysts from Bank of America. However, that assumes subcomponents, like cameras, are still partly assembled outside the U.S.
To put that into context, the base model for iPhone 16 Pro Max costs $1,199 to buy outright, with $125.90 added in local taxes in Louisiana, for instance. Final assembly and testing in the U.S. would simply add $160 to the consumer’s bill.
Meanwhile, the jobs at stake are performed by 1.4 million people employed by Apple’s suppliers overseas.
Could Trump and his backers believe that the additional costs might be worth paying if many thousands of jobs are created in the U.S.?
“If Apple does move final assembly to the U.S., it would need tariff waivers on components/sub-assemblies manufactured globally to make the manufacturing shifts viable,” BofA’s Wamsi Mohan said in a note to clients.
While technically possible, Mohan views moving the entire iPhone supply chain to the U.S. as a “much ******* undertaking” that would “likely take many years, if even possible,” and does not expect near-term manufacturing shifts to the U.S. unless tariff policies become permanent.
The core challenge for India extends beyond just attracting companies.
“Supply chain and manufacturing, these things take a long time to establish,” said Nick McConway, head of Asia ex-Japan equity at Amundi Asset Management. “We saw that with Vietnam, who had to put huge investment into infrastructure. The lights have to stay on, the roads have to be there, the trucks have to get there in time.”
“I think India is only at the very early stage of developing these types of globally facing manufacturing capacities,” McConway added.
The fund manager also highlighted that while labor costs can be low in India, it doesn’t mean savings for companies moving to their manufacturing base to India.
“While your labour costs can be low, your unit labour cost is not because the productivity is no good,” McConway said.
Meanwhile, for the U.S., this productivity gap can offset the advantages of cheaper labor, making it difficult for India to compete effectively on a global scale for high-value manufacturing. Apple has also made significant progress in automating several roles in its final assembly line, reducing the number of people required by more than 50% since the process began.
And even if India wins a larger share of Apple’s iPhone assembly business, the benefits for the country are likely to be minimal, according to one analyst.
“Today, India earns just $30 per iPhone, much of which is given back to Apple as subsidy under the [Production Linked Incentive] scheme,” Ajay Srivastava, founder of think tank Global Trade Research Initiative.
Srivastava, a former trade negotiator for India, took a protectionist approach and suggested that New Delhi’s reduction of tariffs on smartphone components at the behest of Apple could hurt domestic efforts to build a local component ecosystem.
“If Apple’s assembly moves out, India will be forced to stop propping up shallow assembly lines and instead invest in deeper manufacturing—chips, displays, batteries, and beyond.”
In the end, it might not even be Trump’s push to reshore manufacturing back to the U.S. that devoid India of foreign investment. The country might just have work harder to attract investors.
— CNBC’s Michael Bloom and Arjun Kharpal contributed reporting.
Need to know
India’s market is one of the best long-term plays, analysts say. As the “sell U.S.” narrative picks up steam amid U.S. tariff turbulence and concerns over the country’s mounting fiscal deficit, emerging markets have gained traction as an attractive alternative for investors. Among emerging markets, Malcolm Dorson, head of the active investment team at Global X ETFs, believes India offers the best long-term growth play, a sentiment echoed by Mohit Mirpuri, equity fund manager at SGMC Capital, who said that theme is anchored in India’s domestic demand.
India is hoping for a full exemption from the U.S.’ “reciprocal” tariffs. The duties on the South Asian country come in at 26%, and officials are seeking to strike a deal with the U.S. to do away with the tariffs completely, according to CNBC TV18. However, India is reluctant to let goods like agriculture and dairy be imported, which is likely proving to be a roadblock in the negotiations, said former Indian Ambassador to the World Trade Organisation Jayant Dasgupta. That said, India’s large domestic economy and low dependence on imports could shield it from the impact of tariffs, according to a Moody’s Ratings report released May 21.
Britain and the U.S. are working together to preserve the India-Pakistan ceasefire. “Confidence-building measures” and dialogues are on the table, U.K. Foreign Minister David Lammy said on Saturday. India on May 6 said its armed forces had conducted strikes against Pakistan and what it calls Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, targeting “terrorist infrastructure.” The operation follows a militant attack last month in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 people were killed.

Indian stocks have declined over the past week by more than 1.5% so far. The Nifty 50 index has risen by 3.65% this year.
The benchmark 10-year Indian government bond yield has ticked lower slightly to 6.22%, down by 2 basis points over the past week.

On CNBC TV this week, Lavina Quadros, managing director of equities research at Jefferies India, said India’s defense sector has “come a long way” in the last ten years, since the government pushed to reduce such imports to 30% from 70%. Investor confidence in Indian defense firms has also been boosted because domestic air defense systems, for instance, have successfully intercepted foreign drones. But execution of orders remains a key concern for investors.
Meanwhile, Sanjeev Sanyal, a member of the Indian Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, noted that the global supply chain will likely look different by 2030 — and India intends to play a key role in it. The country is already “a very important part of the global services supply chain,” a fact neglected by many, and will now focus on efforts in manufacturing, especially in the electronics and metals, Sanyal added. Even if the U.S. wants to reindustrialize itself, the country will still have to rely on others for materials, and that presents an opportunity for India, Sanyal said.

Government plans national voluntary rollout for sex offenders
Government plans national voluntary rollout for sex offenders

The government is planning a national rollout of voluntary chemical castration for sex offenders, the justice secretary has said.
Shabana Mahmood said she would first expand a small pilot in south-west England to two regions covering 20 prisons.
Mahmood is also exploring whether chemical castration could be made mandatory. No timeline for this decision has been set.
The Liberal Democrats said effectiveness of the voluntary approach must be studied, while an expert who welcomed the extension told the BBC he did not expect the mandatory element to get off the ground.
The plans come as an Independent Sentencing Review, chaired by former Lord Chancellor David Gauke, recommended the pilot continue.
Chemical castration, which is delivered through drugs taken alongside psychiatric work, is targeted at sex offenders who have compulsive and invasive thoughts about sex, or have problematic ******* preoccupations.
The approach has been used in some European countries. In Germany and Denmark, the use of chemical suppression has only been administered on a voluntary basis, while Poland introduced mandatory chemical suppression for some sex offenders.
The suggestion to continue the pilot in England and Wales was one of 48 recommendations set out by Gauke’s review, which was commissioned to look into the causes of the prison overcrowding crisis and to consider alternative punishments to custodial sentences.
Mahmood told the House of Commons on Thursday that she will go further and expand the pilot to build evidence and “make sure that we are using every tool at our disposal that can cut reoffending”.
The government has not confirmed which regions or prisons will be part of the widened pilot scheme.
“I’m not squeamish about taking these further measures,” she said. “I will make sure that that is what happens.”
She also told the Commons she was “exploring whether mandating the approach is possible”.
“It is vital that this approach is taken alongside psychological interventions that target other causes of offending, like asserting power and control,” she added.
“For some, offending relates to power, but for another subset of offenders, the combination of chemical suppressants and psychological interventions, can, we believe, have a big and positive impact.”
Gauke’s report said ******* offences accounted for 21% of adults serving immediate custodial sentences at the end of March 2025.
The review made the recommendation to “build a comprehensive evidence base around the use of chemical suppression for sex offenders and explore options for continued funding of services in this area”.
It cautioned that use of these medications “should never be used as a risk management tool or standalone rehabilitative offer, and it is only appropriate for a limited number of sex offenders”.
Understanding how other jurisdictions have managed the “ethical and practical implications” is crucial as gaining “valid, informed consent” to a course of treatment is a key tenet of medical law in England and Wales, the review said.
Gauke told BBC Breakfast on Thursday the review was making “cautious recommendations” and there would be “caveats” to the continued scheme.
“It is not the answer for every sex offender – this is something we would see as a treatment essentially for reducing the risk of reoffending, rather than a punishment,” he said.
“The review recommends exploring how the scheme operates on a voluntary basis rather than mandatory basis, that’s the position of the review.”
Prof Don Grubin, emeritus professor of forensic psychiatry at Newcastle University, told the BBC: “I don’t think they’ll get the mandatory element of it off the ground.”
He said hormonal medications have “pretty serious side effects” and “somebody would have to really want to get their sex drive under control to agree to be on those drugs”.
“To simply make somebody take that would be very unethical and…most doctors I know would be resistant to it,” he said.
However, he said you could make it a condition of a parole licence, such as in California, where it is mandated for a second time sex offender when the victim is under 13.
He hoped the extension of the voluntary pilot would go ahead “because while we have had clinics running in the prisons for quite a while, we’ve always had difficulty getting it rolled out into the community”.
“If this gives it a push, that would be great,” he said.
Josh Babarinde, the Liberal Democrats’ justice spokesperson, said “the data and evidence (about ongoing voluntary suppression medication pilots) must be made fully transparent so that the effectiveness of this intervention can be properly scrutinised”.
The move to introduce stricter measures than Gauke’s recommendation in this area comes as the government faces pushback from some opposition parties to accepting most of his other suggestions, including earlier release for some offenders.
What is chemical castration and is it effective?
Chemical castration is delivered through two drugs. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) limit invasive ******* thoughts, while anti-androgens reduce the production of testosterone and limit libido.
The drugs are taken alongside psychiatric work that targets other causes of ******* offending, such as a desire for power and control.
These medications have been delivered in some prisons through the Offender Personality Disorder Pathway, a national programme commissioned by the NHS and the HM Prison and Probation Service.
The scheme was first piloted in HMP Whatton in 2007 and later rolled out in six more prisons in 2016, Gauke’s review said.
A 2022 pilot extended the programme to five prisons in south-west England.
Research on the impact of chemical castration – while limited – has shown considerable reductions in reoffending rates. One study followed ten offenders, none of whom reoffended after treatment.
Another study paired one group of sex offenders who had been chemically castrated with another who had not. Reoffending rates were 60% lower among the group who had been chemically castrated.
Prof Grubin said the intervention is “about doctors treating patients, rather than doctors doing a job for criminal justice agencies, but a side effect is that reoffending is likely to be reduced, because we know an important factor in ******* offending and ******* reoffending is sex drive”.
Prof Grubin said the reoffending rate for people on the hormonal medication “is very, very low” because it is effective at reducing ******* drive.
However, he said that effectiveness is hard to demonstrate in reoffending studies because it takes years to see if it is having a long-term effect, and because no one will agree to randomise a high risk sex offender who does not take the medication with someone who does to compare.

BT returns to capital spending for full-fibre expansion
BT returns to capital spending for full-fibre expansion
In May 2024, BT reported a financial year of flat revenues and a significant fall in profits, but generated enthusiasm in stock markets by announcing that it had reached a peak for its significant investments in full-fibre broadband – but now, having published its current end-of-year results, the comms giant has turned the capital spending taps back on and given the green light to its Openreach broadband provision to dig further and faster.
Based on what it deems a successful infrastructure build to date, and the maintenance of a pro-investment regulatory and public policy framework from *** communications regulator Ofcom and the *** government, BT has decided to fund additional capital spending. The investment will be made partly through efficiencies and some reprofiling of other spending.
Just 12 months ago, BT Group chief executive Allison Kirkby stated that the company had reached an inflection point in its long-term strategy, having passed peak capital expenditure on its full-fibre broadband roll-out and achieved a £3bn cost and service transformation programme a year ahead of schedule. Now, she believes BT’s full-fibre deployment is a “*** infrastructure success story” and that it makes sense for the company, and the *** in general, to “push on the accelerator pedal”.
“The more full-fibre we build, the more customers choose to connect. In a highly competitive market, and despite a challenging economic landscape, Openreach is building and connecting customers faster and at a lower cost than anyone,” she said.
BT’s fiscal results for the year to 31 March 2025 showed that Openreach has already built the new infrastructure to more than 18 million homes and businesses nationwide. This included more than four million in the past 12 months and 4.9 million premises in rural locations, a key recent target area for development.
BT Group now expects to accelerate towards its target of reaching 25 million premises by December 2026, upping its build rate by 20% to up to five million premises passed in the year to March 2026.
“The momentum in, and impact of, our full-fibre programme is such that we are now raising our build target by 20% to up to five million *** premises in FY26, keeping us comfortably on track to reach 25 million by the end of 2026, while maintaining our cash flow guidance,” Kirkby added. “We are now only one year away from our inflection to £2bn of normalised free cash flow, our target for FY27, and remain on track to deliver £3bn by the end of the decade.”
As it announced the results, Openreach noted that thanks to increased investment from BT Group, it was now committed to building the country’s most reliable broadband technology – full-fibre – even faster.
With 6.8 million customers already connected to the network – 37% of the total footprint – Openreach claims to have seen record demand for its network in the past 12 months. In 2024, it connected 1.8 million customers to full-fibre. It said it was now reporting quarterly net additions for full-fibre above the half-million mark for the first time.
Based on the assumption of a “supportive” economic environment, Openreach said it ultimately expects to make full-fibre available to as many as 30 million premises in the *** by 2030.
The BT Group results also showed that total reported and adjusted revenue for the year reached £20.4bn, down 2% on an annual basis, attributed mainly to “continued challenging trading conditions” in global and non-*** portfolio channels and weaker handset trading in the consumer division offsetting the benefit of fibre-to-the-premises growth at Openreach.
Reported profit before tax was £1.3bn, up 12% compared with the previous fiscal year, said to be primarily due to goodwill impairment in the prior year, offset by higher specific costs and net finance expense. Capital expenditure was £4.9bn, broadly in line with the prior year.

Wall St mixed after Trump tax bill wins US House vote
Wall St mixed after Trump tax bill wins US House vote
The benchmark S&P 500 has edged lower in choppy trading after the US House of Representatives voted to pass President Donald Trump’s tax bill, which is expected to burden the country with trillions of dollars in extra debt, by a razor-thin margin.
If what Trump has described as a “big, beautiful bill” becomes law, it is expected to add about $US3.8 trillion ($A5.9 trillion) to the federal government’s $US36.2 trillion debt in the next decade, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.
The bill now faces a test in the Republican-controlled Senate and will fulfil much of Trump’s populist agenda if passed, delivering new tax breaks on tips and car loans and boosting military expenditure.
“For all that the government has been trying to reduce government spending and the overall debt level, it seems that this bill is basically going to undo all that they have done,” said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research.
In early trading on Thursday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 72.70 points, or 0.17 per cent, to 41,790.95, the S&P 500 lost 8.11 points, or 0.14 per cent, to 5,836.38, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 28.91 points, or 0.15 per cent, to 18,901.55.
Nine of the 11 S&P sub-sectors traded lower, with utilities and energy among top decliners and down more than 1.0 per cent each.
Longer-dated Treasury yields stayed near their multi-month highs, with those on the 10-year benchmark at 4.606 per cent and the 30-year Treasury yield at a new 19-month high.
Most megacap and growth stocks inched higher, though Alphabet outpaced the pack with a 3.4 per cent rise.
Shares of solar energy companies including First Solar dropped 4.1 per cent as Trump’s tax bill is expected to end a number of green-energy subsidies.
Snowflake jumped 9.0 per cent after the cloud computing firm raised its fiscal-year 2026 product revenue forecast.
All three main stock indexes had witnessed their biggest single-day percentage drops in a month on Wednesday as Treasury yields spiked on worries about mounting US debt.
US stocks have had a solid month so far, with the S&P 500 climbing more than 15 per cent from its April lows, when Trump’s reciprocal tariffs roiled global markets.
A pause in tariffs, a temporary US-China trade truce and tame inflation data have pushed equities higher, although the S&P 500 is still about 3.0 per cent off record highs.
Fed Governor Christopher Waller said in an interview to Fox Business that central bank rate cuts would be on the menu if the Trump administration’s tariff agenda settles on the lower side of the ledger.
Traders are pricing in at least two 25-basis-point rate cuts by the end of the year, according to data compiled by LSEG.
On the data front, US business activity picked up in May while separate data showed jobless claims dropped last week, suggesting that the economy maintained a steady pace of employment growth.
Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 3.3-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and by a 1.82-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq.
The S&P 500 posted no new 52-week highs and nine new lows while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 20 new highs and 59 new lows.

The Witcher 3 released 10 years ago, and CD Projekt Red is celebrating with the release of a gorgeous new controller. The Witcher Special Edition Xbox Controller is now available for purchase exclusively at the Xbox Store–though we’re sure it’s going to quickly become a hot commodity. Along with a standard controller, you’ll also find an Elite Series 2 edition that packs in a bunch of additional features.
$80
Featuring a gritty design filled with ******* and greys and a few red accents, The Witcher Special Edition Xbox Controller looks quite impressive. In the center of the faceplate you’ll find Geralt’s wolf medallion–complete with glowing red eyes. You’ll also find Glagolitic script littered throughout the gamepad, which is the same script used in The Witcher video games.
Tons of Easter eggs are hidden within the design, so you’ll have plenty to keep your eyes busy during loading screens. One of the coolest touches, however, is the triggers–these are different colors as a tribute to Geralt’s silver and steel swords.
Beyond the unique graphics, this is your standard Xbox controller. It’s equipped with a Share button, support for multiple devices (Xbox, PC, mobile), and boasts an ergonomic design that helped land it at the top of our list of the best Xbox controllers.
$170
Need something a bit more robust and better suited for competitive play? Step up the the premium Witcher Special Edition Xbox Elite Series 2. It features the same striking design, anchored by Geralt’s wolf medallion just below the Xbox button.
Along with all the capabilities of the standard Xbox gamepad, this one gets you adjustable thumbsticks, shorter hair trigger locks, a rubberized grip texture, and several interchangeable components. It also benefits from a rechargeable battery that gets up to 40 hours of battery life–an upgrade from the base controller, which requires AA batteries.
Microsoft has been going all-out with special edition Xbox controllers. Earlier this year, we saw the launch of the Doom: The Dark Ages Limited Edition Xbox Wireless Controller. Featuring bloody graphics and a color pattern inspired by the Doom Slayer’s armor, it quickly sold out at most locations (though a few spots still have it in stock). We’ve also seen a Starfield Xbox Controller and Redfall Xbox Controllers–all of which sold out fast. If these new Witcher controllers follow the same pattern, expect them to disappear soon.
Doom: The Dark Ages Limited Edition Xbox Wireless Controller
The fun doesn’t end with The Witcher controllers, as CD Projekt Red also revealed a new Xbox dynamic background. Featuring Geralt, Ciri, and Eredin, it’s a fun way to celebrate the game’s 10th anniversary.

Judge blocks Trump’s executive order dismantling Education Department
Judge blocks Trump’s executive order dismantling Education Department
A federal judge in Massachusetts on Thursday blocked the Trump administration’s attempted dismantling of the Department of Education.
Judge Myong Joun, a Biden appointee, blocked the Trump administration from carrying out its reduction-in-force at the Education Department, which was announced on March 11. Joun also blocked transferring the management of federal student loans and special education functions out of the Education Department.
All fired federal employees from the department must be reinstated as well.
This is a breaking story. It will be updated.

OpenAI says it will expand Stargate AI infrastructure project to the UAE, starting with a 1GW cluster
OpenAI says it will expand Stargate AI infrastructure project to the UAE, starting with a 1GW cluster
OpenAI has today announced the launch of Stargate UAE, the first international deployment of its AI infrastructure platform, Stargate. The company says it will build a 1GB cluster in Abu Dhabi, and says that coordination with the U.S. government was vital in making the expansion possible.
“Stargate represents our long-term vision for building frontier-scale compute capacity around the world in service of safe, secure, and broadly beneficial AGI,” the company said in a press release.
OpenAI says the move is also the first partnership under OpenAI for Countries, a global initiative to help interested governments build sovereign AI capability in coordination with the U.S. government, a scheme OpenAI says is “rooted in democratic values, open markets, and trusted partnerships.”

It includes partnerships with G42, Oracle, Nvidia, Cisco, and SoftBank, and the company also went to great pains to thank President Trump personally for his support in making the venture possible.
As mentioned, OpenAI says it will build a 1GW Stargate UAE cluster in Abu Dhabi, with 200MW online by 2026. The partnership includes reciprocal UAE investment into the U.S. Stargate infrastructure, announced during President Trump’s visit to the UAE last week.
Announced in January, the Stargate AI project should see $500 billion in private sector investment from the aforementioned partner companies. The intention is to build 20 large data centers, creating around 100,000 jobs in the process. $100 billion of that investment is already available for immediate use, with the rest coming over the next four years.
Each data center should measure 500,000 square feet (46,450 square meters), with construction of the first site in Texas already underway. As for application, the data centers should power advanced AI and artificial general intelligence with applications in areas such as healthcare.

OpenAI says the initiative builds on this commitment, “and reinforces OpenAI’s commitment to strengthening U.S. infrastructure while helping allies gain access to transformative AI responsibly and securely.” It says OpenAI’s tools will support the UAE in advancing government, energy, healthcare, education, and transportation, accelerating innovation. As part of the partnership, the UAE will become the first country in the world to enable nationwide ChatGPT access.
OpenAI also says that it has engaged with other countries around the world interested in building their own Stargates.

Person in custody after shooting near CIA headquarters
Person in custody after shooting near CIA headquarters
Security guards have opened fire on a person outside the gates of the CIA’s headquarters near Washington DC and then took the suspect into custody, the intelligence agency says.
A CIA spokesperson said security staff “engaged a person” outside the main gates, and a source familiar with the matter said the suspect was a woman.
The spokesperson declined to say whether gunfire struck the suspect or to disclose any other details of the incident, except to say the person was now in custody.
NBC News reported earlier that the person was shot, citing a person with knowledge of the matter.
It was not immediately known why security officers opened fire or what the person was doing at the time of the shooting.
The incident occurred about 4am, a Fairfax police spokesperson told ABC News.
The CIA closed the main gate at its Langley compound and directed employees to seek alternate routes.
The shooting incident came after two Israeli embassy staffers were killed by a lone gunman in downtown Washington DC on Wednesday night.
There was no indication the incidents were related.

Kraken, a crypto exchange that has spent years in court battling charges brought by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission over its digital asset offerings, is preparing to offer tokenized securities, including shares of Apple, Tesla, and Nvidia, to customers outside the U.S, according to a release Thursday.
The exchange is partnering with Backed—a firm specializing in blockchain-based financial assets — to offer more than 50 U.S. stocks and ETFs as tokens on the Solana blockchain, the release said.
The product, called xStocks, will be available only to users outside the United States and will trade 24/7, much like bitcoin, allowing around-the-clock access to traditional equities in a crypto-native format, the release said.
Kraken did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Kaken already has a traditional stock trading platform for its US customers that offers more than 11,000 stocks and ETFs via the conventional brokerage model.
The exchange, which launched in the U.S. before Coinbase, remains a private company.
The SEC under President Donald Trump has rolled back virtually all crypto-related lawsuits, including the charges of wrongdoing it brought against Kraken.
Binance made a short-lived attempt at tokenizing equities in 2021 before pulling the plug after regulators pushed back.
But with U.S. lawmakers and the Trump administration now warming to crypto infrastructure — and firms like Robinhood and BlackRock openly exploring asset tokenization — Kraken is taking its shot.

Archer Aviation Fires Back at Short Seller With $1B Cash Buffer
Archer Aviation Fires Back at Short Seller With $1B Cash Buffer
A recent report from short-seller Culper Research on May 20, 2025, cast a shadow over Archer Aviation Inc (NYSE:), triggering a downturn in the electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft developer’s stock price.
However, Archer Aviation swiftly refuted the allegations, labeling them “baseless” and questioning the research firm’s credibility. This development arrives at a dynamic time for Archer, a ******* marked by significant operational advancements and positive financial disclosures.
Rather than being derailed, the company is leaning on its fundamental progress, including a strong first-quarter 2025 earnings report, key international partnerships, and continued advancements in its aircraft program, to counter the short seller’s narrative. For investors, this situation necessitates a careful examination of the claims versus the company’s verifiable achievements and ongoing strategic execution.
Archer in the Crosshairs
Culper Research’s May 20th report leveled serious accusations against Archer Aviation, primarily alleging that the company has “systematically misled, deceived, or outright lied” to investors concerning crucial milestones in the development and testing of its flagship Midnight eVTOL aircraft. The short-seller’s thesis hinges on claims that Archer’s portrayal of its progress towards near-term commercialization is not only premature but also “reckless.”
Among the specific allegations detailed by Culper are contentions that Archer misrepresented the timeline for its aircraft assembly and ground testing, citing purported internal communications. The report also challenges the validity of Archer’s June 2024 “transition flight,” claiming it was not compliant with FAA definitions and was designed to unlock funding. It further asserts that Archer concealed significant design flaws and subsequent overhauls of the Midnight aircraft.
Additionally, Culper Research questioned the nature of high-profile promotional activities, such as CEO Adam Goldstein’s appearance on “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon and the LA28 Olympics partnership, suggesting these were costly paid endorsements rather than organic recognitions of progress.
As a notable tactic accompanying their report, Culper Research publicly extended a $1 million wager to Jimmy Fallon, challenging him to take an FAA-compliant commercial flight in an Archer Midnight by July 2028. In response to these multifaceted allegations, Archer Aviation has firmly stated that Culper Research is “not a credible research institution” and that all claims made in the report are “baseless,” attributing the timing of the report to the company’s recent positive momentum.
Archer’s Financial Health Stands Firm
Despite the controversy stirred by the report, Archer’s latest financial results paint a more stable and optimistic picture of the company’s trajectory. Archer Aviation’s Q1 2025 earnings surpassed expectations with an earnings per share (EPS) of -$0.17 against a -$0.28 estimate, and its net loss significantly improved to $93.4 million. Their balance sheet strengthened with cash and equivalents reaching $1.03 billion, up from $834.5 million in Q4 2024, primarily due to financing.
Q1 operating expenses were $144.0 million, a planned increase for scaling. Archer projects a Q2 2025 adjusted EBITDA loss of $100–120 million, reflecting its ongoing investment in the eVTOL sector. Their strong liquidity, exceeding $1 billion, supports certification and commercialization plans.
Archer’s Recent Operational Milestones
Archer Aviation is on track to generate initial revenue in 2025 with its “Launch Edition” program in the UAE. The first piloted Midnight aircraft is set for UAE delivery this summer, with commercial operations planned later this year with Abu Dhabi Aviation and Ethiopian Airlines. This is supported by recent GCAA design approval for Abu Dhabi’s first hybrid heliport and the appointment of Cristiano Tartaglione as COO for UAE operations.
Archer also announced a *** partnership with Anduril Industries ***, Skyports Drone Services, and AtkinsRéalis to test dual-use eVTOL cargo aircraft, expanding its potential beyond passenger transport into a key European market. Manufacturing of its first conforming Midnight aircraft began in Q1 2025 at its ARC facility, with a target to build up to 10 aircraft in 2025 for FAA certification and “Launch Edition” deployments. Archer continues its technology partnership with Palantir (NASDAQ:), plans for a New York City air taxi network with United Airlines, and is the Official Air Taxi Provider for the LA28 Games.
Archer’s Path Through Scrutiny
While Archer Aviation is currently navigating the turbulence created by a short-seller report, the company’s recent first-quarter 2025 financial results and a consistent stream of operational advancements provide a strong, fact-based counter-narrative. The cash position exceeding $1 billion, coupled with a narrower-than-expected net loss, underscores sound financial management.
Tangible progress in key launch markets like the UAE, the strategic expansion into new applications such as *** cargo operations, and the continued backing from major strategic partners provide the narrative of a company methodically executing its complex commercialization plan.
Ultimately, Archer Aviation’s long-term success will be dictated by its sustained ability to meet manufacturing targets, achieve full FAA Type Certification, and successfully deploy its Midnight aircraft in commercial service. For investors focused on these fundamental milestones, the current ******* of heightened scrutiny may offer an opportunity to assess the company’s resilience and its progress in pioneering the future of urban air mobility.

A teacher from Arkansas has pleaded no contest to ******* assault after being accused of ********* abusing a 15-year-old boy at her church.
According to KARK, Reagan Danielle Gray entered her plea on Monday at the Little Rock Court for one count of second-degree ******* assault.
ABC7 reported that the teacher entered a no contest, which allowed her not to admit or deny the crime, but the move is treated the same as a guilty plea for sentencing purposes.
Gray was charged last year with abusing a 15-year-old boy at Immanuel ******** Church in 2020 when she was 23 years old.
KARK reported that while she first abused the boy in 2020, the assault continued into summer 2021.

PEOPLE previously reported in April 2024 that police had accused Gray of ********* abusing a teenager and sending him nudes.
Gray’s attorney, John Ogles, told PEOPLE at the time that Gray had entered a not guilty plea. “We are just going to trust the judicial process,” he said.
While the defendant was a teacher at the Little Rock Christian Academy and a volunteer in the Immanuel ******** Church student ministry, the victim was a member of the student ministry.
KARK and ABC7 reported that Gray had originally been charged with the first and fourth degrees in ******* assault, however, prosecutors later agreed for her to enter a second-degree plea.
She has been sentenced to six years of probation and a $1,000 fine. Gray is also now registered on the sex offender registry, has been ordered to provide a DNA sample and must have no communication with the victim.
PEOPLE previously reported that an affidavit stated that Gray was told to stop contacting the boy after the teen’s parents allegedly found text messages in 2020 between the two.
The texts were then reported to the senior pastor. Gray then told the pastor that the relationship was “not physical” before being removed from the student ministry and being ordered to undergo counseling.
However, she “returned to volunteering in the student ministry shortly after being removed,” per investigators.
Gray then allegedly revealed in a counseling session in 2020 that her relationship with the boy was “******* in nature,” per the affidavit.
“The communication between Gray and [the teen] had not stopped after being confronted by [the teen’s] parents and continued on the Snapchat application,” the affidavit went on to say, with authorities claiming the abuse took place in Gray’s car or apartment multiple times.
The affidavit also stated that Gray was on administrative leave from her job at Sylvan Hills Middle School beginning in February 2024.
According to KARK, Pastor Smith resigned as pastor at Immanuel ******** Church in April last year after backlash for how the church dealt with the allegation of ******* abuse.

Renaissance Hedge Fund’s Biggest Q1 Buys Revealed
Renaissance Hedge Fund’s Biggest Q1 Buys Revealed
During the week beginning on May 12, big-time money managers released their 13F filings, giving retail investors a look into their Q1 2025 buys and sells. Renaissance Technologies is one of the firms that released its 13F for the last quarter. Many see the company as the most successful hedge fund ever. The company’s flagship Medallion Fund generated astoundingly good returns from 1988 to 2021.
Even after fees, the fund’s 39% return over this ******* was more than three times higher than the S&P 500’s return. The fund also achieved a return of 76% in 2020, when the S&P 500 returned a bit more than 16%.
The details of the company’s 13F are intriguing, as the company prioritized spending on some of the biggest stocks in the world. Below are the details of Renaissance’s biggest purchases in Q1 2025.
Looking at these companies’ trading prices in Q1 can provide insight into the valuation levels where Renaissance may consider these stocks undervalued. This can help inform the decisions of retail investors when evaluating whether these stocks are overvalued or undervalued.
All relative return and price change data use closing prices as of May 20.
Renaissance Ups GOOGL Stake by Over Half a Billion Dollars
Coming in third place for Renaissance’s biggest buys in Q1 2025 is Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:). Renaissance bought nearly 2.3 million shares of Alphabet’s Class A shares and over 1.3 million Class C shares.
Overall, the reported value of the company’s investment in Alphabet increased from less than $600,000 to around $558 million. Notably, Alphabet’s Class A shares are trading nearly 10% below their average closing price of around $183 in Q1. Additionally, they are trading less than 6% above the low they reached in Q1.
This moderate amount of upside capture suggests that Renaissance still believes Alphabet is trading at a solid value.
Did DeepSeek Developments Change Renaissance’s Tune on Meta Platforms?
Renaissance’s second-biggest buy in Q1 was the Magnificent Seven stock, Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:). The firm upped its stake in Meta considerably by nearly 550,000 shares.
This increased the value of the company’s position in Meta by over $300 million to $345 million. An interesting detail about Meta is that the stock’s lowest price this quarter was only about 1.5% lower than its price at the start of the quarter.
So, why did Renaissance buy so much Meta stock in Q1 despite its value barely dropping overall? Perhaps Renaissance’s perspective on Meta’s business changed positively in Q1.
Could they agree with Mark Zuckerberg’s take that DeepSeek is a positive for Meta, validating the company’s open-source approach to AI models? Overall, Meta is up just 11% from its lowest price in Q1 and is trading slightly below its average closing price in Q1 of $643.
This suggests that Renaissance likely still sees upside in this name, given that the company would not have been able to capture much upside so far.
Broadcom Was Renaissance’s Biggest Buy, But Is the Recovery Overdone?
Last up is Broadcom Inc (NASDAQ:), the stock Renaissance spent the most on in Q1. The company added over 2.4 million shares to its Broadcom position in Q1. This was a massive change, as the company held only around 2,500 shares at the end of Q4 2024.
At the end of Q1, this position was worth approximately $406 million. This is by far the most significant number of Broadcom shares that Renaissance reported having been on a 13F since at least 2019.
Like many tech stocks, Broadcom’s shares tumbled in Q1. DeepSeek news had shares down over 17% in one day in January. The stock’s lowest price in Q1 was just over $167. Since that quarterly low, shares are up over 38% as of the May 20 close.
Given this significant rise, it is certainly possible that the market has already squeezed out the juice Renaissance saw in this stock. However, no one knows at what price Renaissance purchased the shares.
Broadcom’s average closing price of around $211 in Q1 paints a potentially more favorable picture. Shares are up only around 10% from that level.
Looking into Renaissance’s most significant buys in Q1 provides a fascinating look at where the company saw value in the market. Understanding the trading ranges of these stocks in the quarter helps hone in on what Renaissance thinks these all-important stocks are worth.

Decimate Nevrons and Collect Their Feet in Style With This Monoco Outfit in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Decimate Nevrons and Collect Their Feet in Style With This Monoco Outfit in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
As you adventure through the world of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, you’ll come across a number of dangerous monsters called Nevrons. Once Monoco joins your Expedition party, you’ll be able to collect feet from Nevrons and turn those into new skills for him to utilize on the battlefield.
However, Moncoco doesn’t have to battle and complete the journey while wearing some old hags. While the character may not have many outfit options, one stands out as truly stunning: Lumière. With this outfit, the thrill of beating your enemies would be unmatched.
So, let’s take a look at how you can get the Lumière outfit for Monoco in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
How to get the Lumière outfit in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?
Lumière is a sleek, minimalist ****** outfit designed for Monoco in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. At first glance, Monoco might not seem like the character to pull off such a classy look, but this suit proves us wrong. With it’s red tie, silver stripe, and crisp white *****, the outfit gives him a polished apperance.
The rolled-up sleeves can give the casual flavor to this outfit, which, let’s be honest, is quite fitting for Monoco’s personality. It’s a shame that he doesn’t make more outfits like this.
So, how do you obtain the Lumiere outfit? Well, it’s simple. The Lumiere outfit can be found in the Flying Casino section of the map. To reach here, you’ll need Esquie’s fly ability. Inside the casino, you’ll come across Gestral. It will refuse to talk to you if you’re using a human character.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has tons of exciting outfits for players to unlock. (Image via Sandfall Interactive)
So, make the switch to Monoco, and talk to Gestral to get your hands on the Lumiere outfit. It’s great to see that the development team hasn’t locked such a fantastic outfit behind some microtransaction shenanigans.
How to use Moncoo in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 hasn’t sold many copies in Japan. (Image via Sandfall Interactive)
Monoco joins your party during Act 2 and stands as the final member of the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 roster. His special gameplay mechanic works in two stages. Unlike other characters who use skill points to get their hands on new abilities, Monoco gets new abilities by defeating enemies in battle (gathering their feet, yes).
Monco can also absorb abilities if he’s actively participating in combat, and won’t gain anything if he’s benched. After you’ve gathered several abilities, you’ll engage with the second stage of his mechanic: the ******** Wheel. During combat, this will give Monoco a mask based on his last used ability.
These masks can enhance a number of abilities, but only when used correctly. It encourages strategic selection in the game and sequencing of skills to take full advantage of the enhancements. If you can create a cycle of six abilities that loop together, you’ll be able to unlock Monoco’s full potential, and even the small combos can prove to be highly effective.
The best thing you can do for Monoco is always keep him at the party whenever you adventure into an unknown area with new enemies. This will allow you to unlock his abilities quickly.
With that said, what’s your favorite Monoco outfit in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33? Let us know in the comments below.

Where investors are putting their money

A U.S. Treasury selloff is prompting some market watchers to reassess their stance on fixed income allocation, after “relentless” action from yields on long-dated Treasurys saw those bonds surpass a key 5% threshold.
Yields on 20- and 30-year Treasurys were marginally higher on Thursday, trading at 5.136% and 5.128%, respectively. Both notes were up as much as 5 basis points earlier the session, before paring gains.
Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions, meaning yields rise when the assets sell off. The moves in the U.S. Treasury market come amid a U.S. credit downgrade and mounting concerns around fiscal spending plans outlined in a Republican spending bill.
Yields on Treasurys with shorter-term maturity periods have also risen in recent weeks. The benchmark U.S. 10-year Treasury note was last seen trading at 4.593% on Thursday, erasing gains from earlier in the session.
Surging U.S. government borrowing costs have prompted some market watchers to rethink the status of American government bonds as a go-to safe investment.
U.S. staring into ’emerging markets trap’
Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, labelled the rise in U.S. Treasury yields “relentless,” noting that it was a reflection of “growing disquiet” over swelling U.S. federal debt.
“None of this may have looked like a problem when the Fed Funds rate and benchmark bond yields were anchored at record-lows — but it is a potential problem now,” he said in an email.
Mould added that half of publicly held Treasurys — or some $14 trillion of federal debt — would soon mature and need to be refinanced at higher rates.
“Emerging market investors will be very familiar with the risks attached to the current situation,” he said. “Higher bond yields mean higher interest bills, higher interest bills mean more debt, more debt may mean QE [quantitative easing] or efforts to loosen monetary policy, only for that to perhaps lead to higher inflation, higher interest rates, higher bond yields and around we go again.”
“This is a classic emerging market trap, except America (and for that matter Japan) are staring right into it,” Mould added.
Japan has also seen long-term government borrowing costs rise this week, with the yield on the country’s 30-year bonds hitting a record high of 3.14%. Japanese 20-year bond yields also ticked higher, reaching 2.555% — their highest rate in 25 years. The 30-year yield was last seen at 3.184% on Thursday, while the 20-year yield stood at 2.598%.
Paul Skinner, investment director at London’s Wellington Management, told CNBC the closing gap between yields on American and Japanese bonds meant the latter’s investors were pulling money out of the U.S. and back into Japan.
“The savings that have been dispersed around the world — and there’s a lot of talk about how much is parked in the U.S. at the moment — it’s going to start repatriating,” he said.
“We see clients pulling back from the United States… And the data we look at shows that we’ve seen monthly repatriation purchases of Japanese assets that [are] you know, two, three times what they’ve ever been — now suddenly they get 3.1% on their own domestic bonds, and they don’t have the currency risk. So they’ve got incentive of … proper yields on their bonds. Why wouldn’t they come home now?”
Emerging markets appeal
For Chris Metcalfe, chief investment officer at Kingswood Group’s IBOSS, an allocation to global emerging markets debt “makes absolute sense.”
“Yes, US bonds have a more attractive starting yield than they had previously, but the reasons for that increasing yield remain and in the last few hours have become more acute,” he said.
“The move away from US assets is unprecedented and it’s impossible to say right now how high US Treasury yields could go,” he explained. “We particularly like managers who use a blended approach to emerging market debt and can take best advantage of the huge fluctuation in currencies.”
John Murillo, chief dealing officer at London-based liquidity solutions provider B2BROKER, argued that U.S. Treasurys still offer investors a level of safety and liquidity that remains “unparalleled by most other investment instruments” — but he also noted that the historically-held notion of Treasurys being close to risk-free investments may need to be revised.
Like Metcalfe, he said that various emerging markets government bonds could be strong options for investors looking to diversify their fixed income portfolios.
“China’s credit rating is A1 with a stable outlook, and [the U.S.-China 10-year] yield spread makes the former an interesting option despite the uncertain development of the import tariff exchange game,” Murillo said.
“Several high-paced developing countries away from the prime rating league — like Indonesia and Malaysia — are en route to becoming particular beneficiaries of the current fixed income portfolio reshuffles. For example, a 10Y Indonesian sovereign bond offers approximately a 7% yield.”

De Minaur faces minefield draw at the French Open
De Minaur faces minefield draw at the French Open
Alex de Minaur will have to negotiate a minefield of a first week at the French Open if he is even to battle his way to a potential quarter-final date with his nemesis, Jannik Sinner.
And on a day when the Roland Garros draw threw up few favours for the 15-strong *********** contingent, two of the top women, Maya Joint and Ajla Tomljanovic, will have to face each other in a first-round ‘battle of the generations’ when the tournament starts this weekend.
Remarkably, the 19-year-old Joint, in her debut Paris main draw, and 32-year-old Tomljanovic, in her 10th French Open, will first have a dress rehearsal on Friday in the Morocco Open semi-final in Rabat.
No.9 seed de Minaur, a quarter-finalist last year, has his work cut out to do better as he faces the prospect of a third-round meeting with rising teenage Czech comet Jakub Mensik with the probability of the winner facing British hot shot Jack Draper in the last-16.
De Minaur should be able to ease past Serbian Laslo Djere in his opener, a player he’s beaten three times and never lost to, before the possibility of an all-*********** match-up in the last 64 against James Duckworth, should his fellow Sydneysider get past the unpredictable Alexander Bublik first-up.
The ‘******’ would then likely face Sinner, the returning world No.1, who de Minaur has only taken one set off in 10 one-sided defeats, with potentially Novak Djokovic and reigning champ Carlos Alcaraz awaiting beyond that point.

Alcaraz, who attended the draw and met PSG soccer star Ousmane Dembele there, will take on former world No.4 Kei Nishikori in the first round and could meet two-time finalist Casper Ruud in the quarters.
Sinner, just back after a three-month doping ban, will start by having to silence the famously vocal locals who’ll be cheering on Arthur Rinderknech.
Alexei Popyrin, Austrralia’s 25th seed, will fancy his chances against Japanese world No.75 Yoshihito Nishioka first up but there are forbidding first hurdles for Chris O’Connell, facing French 22nd seed Ugo Humbert, and Aleksandar Vukic, who’s drawn No.24 seed Karen Khachanov.
The only consolation of the Joint-Tomljanovic clash is the guarantee of one Aussie woman at least featuring in the second round.
Olivia Gadecki has the toughest draw of all, up against No.2 seed Coco Gauff in the first round, while Daria Kastkina, in her first grand slam representing Australia, has a demanding opener against Katerina Siniakova, the Czech doubles world No.1 who’s still a dangerous singles opponent for anyone.
Iga Swiatek, after a fourth consecutive title and fifth overall, starts against Rebecca Sramkova, with the prospect of facing Britain’s former US Open champ Emma Raducanu in the second round.
She’s in the same quarter of the draw as last year’s runner-up Jasmine Paolini, fresh off her Italian Open title, and world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka, who opens against Kamilla Rakhimova.

Education Department employees must be reinstated by Trump: Judge

A federal judge ordered the Trump administration on Thursday to reinstate more than 1,300 U.S. Department of Education employees.
“The Department must be able to carry out its functions and its obligations,” as well as “other relevant statutes as mandated by Congress,” U.S. District Judge Myong Joun in Boston wrote in the injunction.
The U.S. Department of Education announced a reduction in force on March 11 that would have gutted the agency’s staff by a half.
In the injunction, the judge pointed out that the staff cuts led to the closure of seven out of 12 offices tasked with the enforcement of civil rights, which protects students from discrimation on the basis of race, sex and disability.
Former President Jimmy Carter established the current-day U.S. Department of Education in 1979. Since then, the agency has faced other existential threats, with former President Ronald Reagan calling for its end and President Donald Trump, during his first term, attempting to merge it with the Labor Department.
This is breaking news. Please check back for updates.
