  1. Major prisoner swap between Russia and Ukraine: Trump Major prisoner swap between Russia and Ukraine: Trump Russia and Ukraine have carried out a large exchange of prisoners from their more than three-year war, US President Donald Trump says. A Ukrainian official said the swap was ongoing but not yet complete, while Moscow did not immediately confirm the exchange. “A major prisoners swap was just completed between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump said on the Truth Social platform on Friday. He said it would “go into effect shortly”, although it was not clear what that meant. A senior Ukrainian official familiar with the details of the swap said the exchange was ongoing on Friday morning and had not finished. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly. “This could lead to something big???” Trump added in his post, apparently referring to international diplomatic efforts to stop the fighting. White House and National Security Council officials did not immediately respond to requests for further details. The exchange was agreed last week in the first direct Russia-Ukraine peace talks since the early weeks of Moscow’s 2022 invasion of its neighbor. That meeting in Turkey lasted just two hours and brought no breakthrough in international diplomatic efforts to stop the fighting. 2. The Independent Databases Archiving the Trump Administration The Independent Databases Archiving the Trump Administration A January 2025 screenshot of the Trump White House’s 404 error message for a web page that is no longer active. Credit – TIME President Donald Trump has promised Americans “radical transparency”—but his government has taken a number of steps that observers say make it anything but the self-described “most transparent Administration in history!” In his first term, which the nonpartisan Sunlight Foundation described as “allergic to transparency,” the White House stopped releasing visitor logs, censored or rejected a record percentage of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, and refused to release his tax returns. So far, the second-term Trump Administration has scrubbed federal websites, limited reporters’ access, and used disappearing-message apps for high-level communications that typically should be retained for posterity. The Associated Press reported last week that “Trump could leave less documentation behind than any previous U.S. President,” and the Freedom of the Press Foundation said the Trump Administration “is eroding the information environment in ways this country has never seen.” Most recently, this week the White House removed official transcripts of the President’s remarks, which are now only available as videos—a departure from a common practice across Democratic and Republican administrations over decades. The only transcript that is now available on the White House website is Trump’s inaugural address. “You must be truly f-cking stupid if you think we’re not transparent,” White House communications director Steven Cheung told HuffPost when asked about the latest move. In the void of official archives, a number of independent record-keepers have taken matters into their own hands, offering the public a cache of data and documentation to sift and search through without fear of sudden removal. Still, these mostly collect only previously-made public records, and transparency advocates remain concerned about those that the public may never see. Here are some of the databases available. American Presidency Project What started out in 1999 as a project by then-graduate student Gerhard Peters and professor John Woolley at the University of California, Santa Barbara, for students of political science has since turned into a valuable comprehensive digital repository of presidential public documents dating back to George Washington. The nonprofit, nonpartisan American Presidency Project hosts copies of Trump’s speeches and executive orders, social media posts, press pool reports, media interviews, and more—from both his terms as well as his campaigns and transition periods. Data.gov Archive Harvard Law School’s Library Innovation Lab, which developed the web-archiving tool, Perma.cc, released in February a new archive of more than 300,000 data sets from data.gov, the U.S. government’s repository of open data. “We’ve built this project on our long-standing commitment to preserving government records and making public information available to everyone,” the lab said in announcing the project. Data Rescue Project The Data Rescue Project is a collaboration between organizations like IASSIST, RDAP, and members of the Data Curation Network. The project, which started out in February on a Google Doc, aims to “serve as a clearinghouse for data rescue-related efforts and data access points” for public U.S. governmental data that it deems “currently at risk.” Data it harvests, including from government agencies like the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Education, is maintained in the searchable archive DataLumos, the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research’s crowd-sourced repository hosted by the University of Michigan. Factba.se Started in 2017 by Virginia husband and wife Bill Frischling and Jennifer Canty to empower the public to factcheck Trump’s statements for themselves, Factba.se collects videos of Trump’s speeches, as well as press gaggles and other appearances. “How could you argue something is not true if you could see not only what this person said but the entire context around it?” Frischling told BuzzFeed News. The database was acquired by FiscalNote and is now hosted by FiscalNote’s policy news site Roll Call. It also has a collection of Trump’s tweets and social media posts, going as far back as 2009, as well as the President’s public schedule and emailed press releases from the White House. Federal Environmental Web Tracker by EDGI Formed in 2016 to document changes to “vulnerable” federal environmental data, the Environmental Data & Governance Initiative (EDGI) is a research collaboration of professionals advocating for environmental awareness. Its website-monitoring team created a tracker for changes to environment-related federal pages. Since returning to office, the Trump Administration has purged information or text related to the climate crisis on many government websites. Internet Archive The Internet Archive is a nonprofit that provides users free access to its expansive digital library. Since beginning in 1996, the archive has a collection of more than 835 billion web pages, 44 million books and texts, 15 million audio recordings, 10.6 million videos, 4.8 million images, and a million software programs. “Our mission is to provide Universal Access to All Knowledge,” it says on its site. In 2017, it launched the Trump Archive, which collects “TV news shows containing debates, speeches, interviews, rallies, and other reporting related to Donald Trump, before his first presidency and throughout subsequent years.” But anybody can contribute. Described by the New Yorker as “a tech-support professional” in Kansas, a man identified only as Andrew—who uses the moniker Grumpy—began downloading videos from federal agencies on February 1 in response to takedowns by the Trump Administration. The videos are available on his Internet Archive account, Grumpy System. The Internet Archive also operates the Wayback Machine, a tool that preserves timestamped snapshots of websites. Like the Internet Archive’s other databases, individuals can contribute to the Wayback Machine, too. Its director told NPR that six weeks into Trump’s second term, some 73,000 government web pages (and counting) were cataloged before being expunged, including reportedly the only copy of the House Jan. 6 Committee’s interactive timeline of the 2021 Capitol Riot. The Wayback Machine has also hosted since 2008 the End of Term Web Archive, which “collects, preserves, and makes accessible United States Government websites at the end of presidential administrations.” Rev AI-powered speech-to-text company Rev hosts a free Transcript Library that includes searchable transcripts of Trump’s public appearances going back years. Trump’s Truth Trump’s Truth, a project by the Never-Trump-Republican founded nonprofit group Defending Democracy Together, archives all of Trump’s posts on his platform TRUTH Social. While Trump’s TRUTH Social posts are publicly available, the Trump’s Truth site warns that the President’s posts on his own platform “may be deleted at any time.” The archive checks for new posts “every few minutes” and includes video transcription and image descriptions to enable greater search ability. “We believe this is an essential part of the historical record, and that it must be preserved for its educational, journalistic and research value,” the site says. 4. Watch lost in US shipwreck comes home to *** after 165 years Watch lost in US shipwreck comes home to *** after 165 years Sarah-May Buccieri BBC News Reporting fromBoston, LincolnshireBBC The 16-carat gold timepiece will be on display at Boston Guildhall from 24 May A 165-year-old pocket watch found in an American shipwreck has been returned to its home town in the ***. The timepiece belonged to Herbert Ingram – a British politician and journalist from Boston, Lincolnshire. Ingram was recognised for his role in bringing fresh water, gas and the railways to the town, but died during a trip to the US in 1860 when the steamship Lady Elgin sank on Lake Michigan. Councillor Sarah Sharpe, from Boston Borough Council, said: “The fact that this small part of him is coming back to his home town to be displayed is really special and important.” Valerie van Heest Divers in Wisconsin found the pocket watch in the shipwreck in 1992 The pocket watch, its chain and fob was found by divers at the bottom of the lake, in Wisconsin, in September 1992. But it remained in the US for more than 30 years until it was offered to an archaeologist who was curating an exhibition about the wreck of the Lady Elgin. Ingram was sailing on the ship with his son when a violent storm broke out on the night of 8 September 1860. The ship collided with another vessel and Ingram was among about 300 people who died. His body was brought back to Britain, where his legacy has lived on. He was celebrated as the founder of The Illustrated London News, the first illustrated news magazine, and was credited, as MP for Boston, with helping to transform the town into a large industrial centre. A statue of him stands outside St Botolph’s Church – the Boston Stump – overlooking the marketplace. Valerie van Heest has written a book about the Lady Elgin After the watch was discovered by divers in 1992, its owner was identified as Ingram using initials and manufacturer details. In October 2024, the divers approached Valerie van Heest, an archaeologist who had conducted a survey of the shipwreck. They said the watch had belonged to Ingram and offered it to her for an exhibition about the Lady Elgin. “I very quickly came to the realisation it doesn’t belong in America,” she said. “It belongs in Boston where Herbert Ingram was from, where a statue of him still stands.” Ms van Heest contacted the Boston Guildhall museum and later purchased the watch in order to donate it to the town. “It is physical artefacts that connect us in the present to the past,” she said. “To see a watch which belonged to the man who stands in Boston’s town square… I think this is going to draw people in, to wonder who was this man?” Herbert Ingram was an MP and celebrated journalist Coincidentally, the Guildhall had been planning an exhibition about Ingram. Sharpe, the portfolio holder for heritage and culture at Boston council, said she was so surprised when Ms van Heest got in touch that she “couldn’t sit down”. “Since then I’ve been absolutely buzzing,” she added. “Herbert Ingram was one of our most influential people.” Listen to highlights from Lincolnshire on BBC Sounds, watch the latest episode of Look North or tell us about a story you think we should be covering here. 6. House Republican ‘big beautiful’ tax bill favors the rich House Republican ‘big beautiful’ tax bill favors the rich House Speaker Mike Johnson speaks to the media after the House narrowly passed a budget bill forwarding President Donald Trump’s agenda at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, May 22, 2025. Kevin Dietsch | Getty Images There’s a stark contrast between high-earners and low-income households in a sprawling legislative package House Republicans passed on Thursday. The bulk of the financial benefits in the legislation — called the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” — would flow to the wealthiest Americans, courtesy of tax-cutting measures like those for business owners, investors and homeowners in high-tax areas, experts said. However, low earners would be worse off, they said. That’s largely because Republicans partially offset those tax cuts — estimated to cost about $4 trillion or more — with reductions to social safety net programs like Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. The tax and spending package now heads to the Senate, where it may face further changes. ‘It skews pretty heavily toward the wealthy’ The Congressional Budget Office, a nonpartisan federal scorekeeper, estimates income for the bottom tenth of households would fall by 2% in 2027 and by 4% in 2033 as a result of the bill’s changes. By contrast, those in the top 10% would get an income boost from the legislation: 4% in 2027 and 2% in 2033, CBO found. A Yale Budget Lab analysis found a similar dynamic. The bottom fifth of households — who make less than $14,000 a year — would see their annual incomes fall about $800 in 2027, on average, Yale estimates. The top 20% — who earn over $128,000 a year — would see theirs grow by $9,700, on average. The top 1% would gain $63,000. The Yale and CBO analyses don’t account for last-minute changes to the House legislation, including stricter work requirements for Medicaid. “It skews pretty heavily toward the wealthy,” said Ernie Tedeschi, director of economics at the Yale Budget Lab and former chief economist at the White House Council of Economic Advisers during the Biden administration. The legislation compounds the regressive nature of the Trump administration’s recent tariff policies, economists said. “If you incorporated the [Trump administration’s] hike in tariffs, this would be even more skewed against lower- and working-class families,” Tedeschi said. Most bill tax cuts go to top-earning households There are several reasons the House bill skews toward the wealthiest Americans, experts said. Among them are more valuable tax breaks tied to business income, state and local taxes and the estate tax, experts said. These tax breaks disproportionately flow to high earners, experts said. For example, the bottom 80% of earners would see no benefit from the House proposal to raise the SALT cap to $40,000 from the current $10,000, according to the Tax Foundation. More from Personal Finance: Tax bill includes $1,000 baby bonus in ‘Trump Accounts’ House bill boosts maximum child tax credit to $2,500 Food stamps face ‘biggest cut in the program’s history’ The bill also preserves a lower top tax rate, at 37%, set by the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which would have expired at the end of the year. It kept a tax break intact that allows investors to shield their capital gains from tax by funneling money into “opportunity zones.” Trump’s 2017 tax law created that tax break, aiming to incentivize investment in lower-income areas designated by state governors. Taxpayers with capital gains are “highly concentrated” among the wealthy, according to the Tax Policy Center. All told, 60% of the bill’s tax cuts would go to the top 20% of households and more than a third would go to those making $460,000 or more, according to the Tax Policy Center. “The variation among income groups is striking,” the analysis said. Why many low earners are worse off That said, more than eight in 10 households overall would get a tax cut in 2026 if the bill is enacted, the Tax Policy Center found. Lower earners get various tax benefits from a higher standard deduction and temporarily enhanced child tax credit, and tax breaks tied to tip income and car loan interest, for example, experts said. However, some of those benefits may not be as valuable as at first glance, experts said. For example, roughly one-third of tipped workers don’t pay federal income tax, Tedeschi said. They wouldn’t benefit from the proposed tax break on tips — it’s structured as a tax deduction, which doesn’t benefit households without tax liability, he said. Meanwhile, lower-income households, which rely more on federal safety net programs, would see cuts to Medicaid, SNAP (formerly known as food stamps), and benefits linked to student loans and Affordable Care Act premiums, said Kent Smetters, an economist and faculty director at the Penn Wharton Budget Model. The House bill would, for example, impose work requirements for Medicaid and SNAP beneficiaries. Total federal spending on those programs would fall by about $700 billion and $267 billion, respectively, through 2034, according to the Congressional Budget Office analysis. That said, “if you are low income and don’t get SNAP, Medicaid or ACA premium support, you will be slightly better off,” Smetters said. Some high earners would pay more in tax In a sense, it may not be surprising most tax benefits accrue to the wealthy. The U.S. has among the most progressive tax systems in the developed world, Smetters said. The top 10% of households pay about 70% of all federal taxes, he said. Such households would get about 65% of the total value of the legislation, according to a Penn Wharton analysis published Monday. A subset of high earners — 17% of the top 1% of households, who earn at least $1.1 million a year — would actually pay more in tax, according to the Tax Policy Center. “In part this is due to limits on the ability of some pass-through businesses to fully deduct their state and local taxes and a limit on all deductions for top-bracket households,” wrote Howard Gleckman, senior fellow at the Tax Policy Center. 7. Karoline Leavitt Stuns Critics On Social Media With Trump ‘Hatred’ Claim Karoline Leavitt Stuns Critics On Social Media With Trump ‘Hatred’ Claim White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt faced accusations of hypocrisy on Thursday after declaring that “hatred has no place in the United States of America under President Donald Trump.” Leavitt’s assertion ― during a press briefing in which she addressed the fatal shooting of two Israeli Embassy workers in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday ― prompted critics to point out Trump’s yearslong history of incendiary rhetoric. In the last week alone, Trump has used his Truth Social platform to whip up anger against federal judges, attack rock star Bruce Springsteen (including with a spoof video in which the president appears to strike the musician with a golf ball) and slam Beyonce, U2 frontman Bono and TV legend Oprah Winfrey. Trump has also flipped out at a reporter. Many critics, therefore, suggested Leavitt pass her comment on to the president. Others recalled Trump’s online post in which he literally expressed his hatred for another pop star when he declared, “I hate Taylor Swift.” Also in the briefing, Leavitt was pressed on whether the guest list to a dinner that Trump was hosting for people who bought his Trump-themed crypto coins would be made public. “The president is attending it in his personal time,” Leavitt said. “It is not a White House dinner, it’s not taking place here at the White House. But certainly I can raise that question and try to get you an answer for it.” Critics questioned the notion of “personal time” for a sitting president, and more: Related… Source link #Karoline #Leavitt #Stuns #Critics #Social #Media #Trump #Hatred #Claim Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  9. Bank of America raises this dollar store’s price target ahead of earnings Bank of America raises this dollar store’s price target ahead of earnings Bank of America sees room for Dollar General to run as earnings near. Analyst Robert Ohmes lifted his price target by $15 to $115, suggesting shares can jump 14.3% above Thursday’s close. That marks a new high for price targets on the discount retailer among analysts on Wall Street, according to LSEG. “With the stock at a discount to historical levels & peers, we believe competitive & expense risks are fully reflected in the stock price,” Ohmes wrote to clients in a note. “Increasing visibility on strategic initiatives and share gains from competitor store closures provide a favorable setup for comp & profitability improvement into 2025, particularly in 2H.” Ohmes also reiterated his buy rating. That makes him an outlier on the Street, with the majority of analysts surveyed by LSEG have a hold rating. He sees $1.40 in adjusted earnings per share and 1% growth in comparable store sales. Ohmes also said the bank has observed accelerating sales data in the first quarter despite flat estimates — which points to potential for upside. Dollar General is expected to report earnings on June 3. Additionally, the analyst said he has confidence that the Tennessee-based company’s “back to basics” strategy is working. While he said bears may point to Walmart’s outperformance, Ohmes said Dollar General’s price gaps compared with competitors and expanding digital presence can provide tailwinds. Store closures from competitors can also give the company an edge, he said. The stock has rallied more than 32% this year, on track for its first positive year in three. 10. She brings in $20,000 a month teaching people how to make dumplings She brings in $20,000 a month teaching people how to make dumplings Samantha Mui, 34, is the founder of Thirsty Dumpling. Courtesy of Samantha Mui Samantha Mui has always been a bit of a rebel. Growing up, she knew she hated school but loved being creative and cooking. As a kid, she said, she played hooky by pretending to be sick so she could stay home and watch Julia Child or Martha Stewart on TV and “tinker” in the kitchen all day. Then, she’d clean it all up before her parents came home. “I really struggled in school, because I had a hard time paying attention in class … I was really rowdy and I was kind of a troublemaker,” Mui told CNBC Make It. “I was struggling to follow directions. If I didn’t understand it, I would just try to do it in a way that made sense for me, but I felt like I was always getting reprimanded [for that].” She recalled being placed in an ESL (English as a second language) class in the fifth grade, despite the fact that she was born in the U.S. and spoke proper English. “Ever since that [happened], I just thought I was not smart,” she said. “At a young age, I knew that I needed to do it my own way … I realized [that] I can’t force myself to like something, but, if I’m interested in something, I’m going to be obsessed with it,” Mui said. It wasn’t until she was in her late 20s that she finally decided to embrace her natural talents instead of fighting them. Today, the 34-year-old San Francisco Bay Area native is the author of the cookbook “Melting Pot” and the founder of Thirsty Dumpling, a do-it-yourself dumpling-making startup. Her business brings in about $20,000 a month, according to documents reviewed by CNBC Make It. From dropout to overachiever For most of her life, Mui struggled to fit into society’s mold. After high school, she went on to study for a couple months at a community college, before deciding to go to culinary school instead. “I went to community college for one semester and absolutely hated it. I just felt really lost, like: ‘What am I doing here?’ So I didn’t feel like [I had another] option,” said Mui. It was in culinary school that she gained much more confidence. “I remember being on the Dean’s honor list that year … That’s the moment I was like: ‘Aha, you’re not stupid … you’re just a hands on person,'” Mui said. Through culinary school, she came to accept her own learning style and decided that she should give college another chance. So in 2012, at the age of 21, she dropped out of culinary school and went to college to complete her undergraduate degree. “After that, I was always on the honor roll. [I became an] overachiever at that point, because I finally cracked the code of school. Like, just understanding what is asked of me and … I had a lot of tricks in my head of how to do school,” she said. By 2016, Mui had earned both a bachelor’s degree in communications and media studies as well as a master’s degree in international business studies. For the next several years, she worked a few corporate and service jobs. But she realized that she was very unhappy. “I definitely didn’t feel like it was my end goal at that point … like, [there was] something inside of me that wanted to do something else, you know, but I didn’t know what that was yet,” said Mui. In December 2022, Mui’s father died suddenly — just months after her grandmother’s death. She realized that only two things really matter in life: how you treat others and whether you’re happy. Shortly after, Mui left her corporate role and decided to take a break. She gave herself time to rest, reflect and think about what she wanted to do next. Thirsty Dumpling in the making Within three weeks of being unemployed in April 2023, Mui had a phone call with her mother, who said, “If you could only make dumpling-making easy … That’s a billion dollar idea.” “And a light bulb moment went off … I remember, within the next day, I started buying all these products to start tinkering in my kitchen,” Mui said. The idea was to create a DIY kit for people to make dumplings from scratch. I’m so much happier. So much lighter … if money was not an option, I would probably be doing [this] … I just feel like I’m doing what my inner child always wanted to do. Samantha Mui Founder, Thirsty Dumpling “In that moment, all the things I’ve been through … started coming back,” she said. “When I was younger, where I truly struggled with learning — it’s like I knew that I could create a product that could be very easy and simplified for [anyone to use].” She thought the kits would not only give people confidence in the kitchen, but also become a way for others to learn about her culture. Mui said she invested about $27,000 to get the company started and launched Thirsty Dumpling by November 2023. She now lives in Chicago, where she runs the business, selling dumpling-making kits as well as teaching in-person and online classes on how to make dumplings. “I’m so much happier. So much lighter … if money was not an option, I would probably be doing [this],” she said. “I just feel like I’m doing what my inner child always wanted to do.” When asked what would tell her younger self if she could go back in time, Mui said, “I would tell myself to value my gifts and talents more … Don’t focus so much on my weaknesses, focus more on my strengths.” Want a new career that’s higher-paying, more flexible or fulfilling? 14. Doctors threaten strike action after 4% pay offer Doctors threaten strike action after 4% pay offer Becky Morton Political reporter PA Media Junior doctors have taken part in 11 separate strikes in the past two years Doctors in England are threatening strike action after they were handed a 4% pay rise. The British Medical Association (BMA), the union representing doctors, said the increase – effective from 1 April – was “derisory” and did not go far enough in reversing historical pay freezes. Meanwhile, the National Education Union (NEU) said it was likely to “register a dispute” with the government if it did not commit to fully funding the 4% pay rise for teachers in England. Health Secretary Wes Streeting defended the offers on Thursday, saying they were above inflation – the rate prices are rising. BMA council chairman Prof Philip Banfield said doctors’ pay was still around a quarter less than it was 16 years ago, when taking account of inflation. He said the pay rise “takes us backwards, pushing pay restoration even further into the distance without a government plan or reassurance to correct this erosion of what a doctor is worth”. Dr Banfield added that “no one wants a return to scenes of doctors on picket lines” but the government’s actions had “sadly made this look far more likely”. The BMA said it would ballot members next week over possible strike action. The Department of Health said resident doctors, formerly called junior doctors, would get an extra £750 top-up, taking their average pay rise to 5.4%. Resident doctors took part in 11 separate strikes during 2023 and 2024 as they had been arguing for a 35% increase to make up for 15 years of below-inflation pay awards. They were given rises worth an average of 22% over the last two years to bring an end to those strikes – and the BMA argues this year’s pay award did not do enough to make up that remaining shortfall. Meanwhile, health unions reacted angrily after a smaller rise of 3.6% was announced for other NHS staff, including nurses, midwives and other front-line workers. The Royal College of Nursing said it was “grotesque” that nurses had been offered a smaller rise than doctors, which it said would be “entirely swallowed up” by price rises. The union plans to consult nurses on whether they are happy with the rise, or if they want to move forward with industrial action. If they back the latter, a formal strike ballot could be run. NHS staff in Wales and Northern Ireland are likely to be given the same pay award, as the governments there have accepted the same recommendations. Health and Social Care Secretary Wes Streeting said: “This government was never going to be able to fully reverse a decade and a half of neglect in under a year, but this year’s pay increases – and last year’s – represent significant progress in making sure that NHS staff are properly recognised for the outstanding work they do.” Inflation unexpectedly rose to 3.5% in the year to April, with economic forecasters predicting a figure of 3.2% for this financial year. While education unions broadly welcomed the pay rise, they raised concerns it would only be partly covered by government. The education department has announced an additional £615m to cover the rises, but said schools would be asked to partially fund the awards through “improved productivity and smarter spending”. Daniel Kebede, general secretary of the NEU, the largest teaching union, said in many schools this would result in “cuts in service provision to children and young people, job losses, and additional workloads for an already overstretched profession”. He added: “Unless the government commit to fully funding the pay rise then it is likely that the NEU will register a dispute with the government on the issue of funding, and campaign to ensure every parent understands the impact of a cut in the money available to schools, and that every politician understands this too.” Kebede told the BBC his union would consult members over the offer, but he felt it would be “broadly acceptable” and that strike action was “very unlikely”. The rises come after ministers accepted proposals from a series of pay review bodies, which are tasked with recommending pay awards for around 45% of people working in the public sector. The awards are higher than the 2.8% the Treasury previously budgeted for, with ministers saying most of the remainder will have to come from existing budgets. Labour ended long-running public sector strikes last summer by accepting recommended pay rises between 4.75% and 6% for last year. Ministers argued the move was required to stop damage to the economy – but it led to Conservative accusations they had lost control of public sector pay. Edward Argar, shadow health secretary, said: “We warned Labour that the unions would simply come back for more when they gave in to the strikes and agreed to above-inflation pay demands with no strings attached. “Now, with the threat of renewed strikes once again casting a shadow over the NHS, that warning is becoming reality.” Source link #Doctors #threaten #strike #action #pay #offer Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Now we’ve got even more info about the mysterious product, and it’s rumored to look like an iPod Shuffle. According to industry insider and renowned leaker Ming-Chi-Kuo, the current OpenAI ChatGPT hardware prototype “is slightly larger than the AI Pin, with a form factor as compact and elegant as an iPod Shuffle.” Kuo revealed multiple new insights into the product on X, detailing that io’s product is expected to enter mass production at the start of 2027. You may like Kuo says while the design and specifications may change before the device enters mass production, it’s expected to “have cameras and microphones for environmental detection, with no display functionality.” Not only is the device expected to look like an iPod Shuffle that can be worn around your neck, but it is also “expected to connect to smartphones and PCs, utilizing their computing and display capabilities.” This information gives us a much deeper insight into what the io product actually is, following OpenAI’s $6.5 billion acquisition of the company. In the announcement video, Ive, famous for designing the first iPhone, and Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, talked for nine-minutes in a café without really giving information on what the product is, other than it’s “an extraordinary moment”, and that whatever the pair are working on is going to completely revolutionize the way we interact with artificial intelligence. Essentially, it’s ChatGPT in a small product you can throw in your pocket or wear around your neck. While this gives us further indication into what to expect, there’s still a long time before io’s first product enters mass production and that could mean major changes over the next year. Kuo says, “AI integrated into real-world applications, often termed “physical AI,” is widely recognized as the next critical trend”, and while we may not understand the necessity for these products yet, in two years time everyone might be interacting with ChatGPT and other AI models in a whole new way. That’s the cheapest it’s ever been, and much cheaper than Amazon’s current price. The Philips Hue Twilight currently holds a prime position in our guide to the best smart lights thanks to its set of two light sources (a lamp on the front and a gradient LED strip on the back) that gradually ramp up the brightness and change from warm to cool to wake you up like a natural sunrise. Even the best wake-up lights can sometimes be jarring if you’re a light sleeper, but this premium lamp raises the brightness so gradually, it’s like being gently roused by the sun during a summer camping trip. Our reviewer Josephine Watson was thoroughly impressed when she tested this stylish lamp. Her only significant complaint was the price, but with £50 off, it’s much more affordable right now. Hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa loses civil case suing him for child ******* abuse Hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa loses civil case suing him for child ******* abuse Hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa has lost a civil case suing him for child ******* abuse and trafficking after failing to show up in court. In 2021, the anonymous plaintiff alleged that the DJ and producer ********* abused and trafficked him for four years, beginning in 1991, when he was 12 and Bambaataa 33 or 34 years old. Bambaataa, born Lance Taylor, has never responded to these specific allegations, Rolling Stone reports. The Guardian has contacted representatives for Bambaataa for comment. Judge Alexander M Tisch granted the plaintiff a default judgment “without opposition” in New York state’s supreme court. Bambaataa has faced numerous allegations of molesting boys. In 2016, the Democratic party activist and former music industry executive Ronald Savage alleged that Bambaataa had repeatedly abused him in 1980, when he was 15 and Bambaataa 23. In 2024 he recanted his allegations, saying that he met Bambaataa at a club he had used a fake ID to enter. “Bambaataa is not a paedophile and, in my eyes, he was doing something that was consensual with someone that he thought was of age,” he told AllHipHop. “I wish, back in 2016, I remembered about the fake ID.” At the time, the allegations prompted more alleged victims to come forward, with Rolling Stone reporting that 12 men in total – not including Savage – have accused Bambaataa of ******* impropriety. A man claiming to be a former bodyguard for Bambaataa, Shamsideen Shariyf Ali Bey, said: “I’ve walked in on stuff where I say: ‘What the ***** is going on.’ He travels with late teens. Those are the ones he takes overseas with him. When I went with him on tour in the states, I would stay in one room and he would have boys in the room with him.” The musician denied all allegations in a 2016 interview with Fox 5 News, but left his position as the head of his Universal Zulu Nation organisation: “I never abused nobody. You know, it just sounds crazy for people to say that, to hear: ‘You abused me.’ You know all my people back then, you know the hundreds of people that been around me. If something like that happened, why you never went to none of them?” Alongside DJ Kool Herc, Bambaataa was one of the originators of hip-hop and began throwing block parties in the South Bronx in the 1970s. • In the ***, ***** Crisis offers support for ***** and ******* abuse on 0808 802 9999 in England and Wales, 0808 801 0302 in Scotland, or 0800 0246 991 in Northern Ireland. 19. Metal Gear Solid Delta opening cinematic debuts new version of the Snake Eater theme Metal Gear Solid Delta opening cinematic debuts new version of the Snake Eater theme Konami has released the opening cinematic for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, in which it debuts a new version of the game’s iconic Snake Eater theme. The cinematic, which can be viewed below, features clips from throughout the game, and should perhaps be avoided by players who’ve never played the original. What’s most notable about the cinematic is that it includes a new version of Snake Eater, the game’s theme, performed by Cynthia Harrell. While the composition of the song remains similar to the original version, Harrell has provided a new vocal for the recording. Cynthia Harrell will appear at this Summer’s Metal Gear concert in London. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Konami‘s remake of the third game in the series, is planned to release on August 28 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. The new version of the theme song is one of many ways in which Metal Gear Solid Delta’s developer is trying to freshen up the PS2 original. Last year, VGC went hands-on with the game and discussed the changes that had been made with producer Noriaki Okamura. “This is a 20-year-old game,” producer Okamura told VGC. “So when we decided to bring it to modern platforms, we didn’t want to make it feel like an old game. We did refine a lot of things to make sure that for those who didn’t play the original, it still feels like a game that came out in this day and age.” In a separate interview last year, creative producer Yuji Korekado explained in an interview with Famitsu last year how Metal Gear Solid Delta’s difficulty will change depending on whether players use its new modern perspective – which makes the game play more like Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain – or the original, fixed perspective. “We had originally planned to make it possible to switch between the two viewpoints at any time during gameplay, but we decided against it,” Korekado explained. “The difficulty level changes drastically depending on the viewpoint. “The ‘New Style’ has a wider, more linear field of view, and you can shoot your gun while moving, so the difficulty level was lower than we had expected. However, if we adjusted it to match the ‘New Style’, the ‘Legacy Style’ would become too difficult, so we decided to split the play style in two. The ‘Legacy Style’ is close to the difficulty level of the original version, and we are adjusting the ‘New Style’ from scratch.” Source link #Metal #Gear #Solid #Delta #opening #cinematic #debuts #version #Snake #Eater #theme Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  20. With no release in sight, relatives of Venezuelan detainees in CECOT find comfort in support group With no release in sight, relatives of Venezuelan detainees in CECOT find comfort in support group On May 18, relatives of the Venezuelan migrant detainees in El Salvador’s mega prison CECOT, announced to a WhatsApp group the death of Marlene Ramirez, a grandmother who raised one of the men currently detained there, Jonathan Mendoza Ramirez. Her family said she had died of a heart attack, unable to endure the emotional stress of not being able to communicate with her grandson. She could no longer take it, they said. Since the Trump administration in March removed a group of Venezuelan migrants alleged to be gang members to El Salvador for indefinite detention, a WhatsApp virtual community has come into being, made up largely of mothers of the detainees. The group grew one by one, as the mothers found out about their sons’ whereabouts, largely from videos posted on social media by the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele. The videos showed the Venezuelan men arriving from the U.S. in shackles, being frog-marched off the plane and into CECOT. Inside the prison, they were forced to kneel as their heads were shaved by guards. “I can’t recount these videos or else I fall into a serious depression,” said Jetzy Arteaga, the creator of the WhatsApp group. Her son, Carlos Cañizalez Arteaga, is one of the Venezuelan migrants transferred to CECOT in March. “I try to block them, so that I can go on about my day, but only a mother in this situation can understand why these images hurt so much.” On days when she can’t keep the images out of her thoughts, Arteaga says she can’t get out of bed and turns to other mothers in the group chat. “When one of us is down, we go to their house, run their errands and pick up their other kids from school,” says Arteaga. “They’re all over Venezuela, and I understand that today, it might be them needing help, but tomorrow it might be me in the hospital.” Jetzy Arteaga, creator of a Whatsapp support group for mothers whose sons are being held in CECOT, a maximum security prison in El Salvador. Her son, Carlos Cañizalez Arteaga, standing behind her, is being held at CECOT. Photo provided by Jetzy Arteaga Arteaga created the group to communicate with other mothers because she says she needed answers. “I was in a state of disbelief, and I was waiting for the U.S. government to say my son was transferred by mistake,” said Arteaga. “The U.S. is a country that follows their laws, and when their investigation concludes my son is not a gang member, they’ll release him.” Records that prove his lack of criminal gang activity in Venezuela, however, have not led to Carlos’ release. The group says it has grown and now includes relatives of 170 of the migrant men detained in El Salvador. “The first thing I do every morning is check the group chat, and we ask for updates and prayers,” said Analia Burbano, whose nephew Victor Andres Ortega Burbano, is being held in CECOT. She says she constantly scrolls through social media to see if there are any updates or photos of her nephew in prison. Undated photo of Analia Burbano (R) with her nephew, Victor Andres Ortega Burbano (L), who is being detained in CECOT, in El Salvador Photo provided by Analia Burbno Burbano says she is now speaking on behalf of her nephew because his mother is emotionally and physically unable to do so. “Ever since she saw the video of Victor at CECOT, she fell into a depression, does not get up from bed, does not eat and cries every day,” said Burbano. “She is very frail.” Burbano says her nephew’s arrest and transfer came as a surprise, since Ortega had been granted Temporary Protected Status that allowed him to legally work in the U.S. According to immigration documents reviewed by CBS News, Ortega’s TPS was approved for June 2024 through last month, in April. The group frequently makes trips to Miramar, Venezuela, to pressure officials to demand the release and deportation of the men back to their country. The chat serves as a venue to plan the next protest or opportunity to publicize the men’s plight at events like those held by the United Nations. “We all have our ups and downs, but through this process, we make sure that none of us let the negative thoughts linger for long,” said Anyi Yohana Casares Jimenez, mother of Jason Alfredo Silva Casares. On March 13, Jimenez says she received the last call from her son, desperately asking her to send over documents proving he didn’t have a criminal record in Venezuela. She never heard from him again. Jason showed up at the U.S. southern border in August 2024 after receiving an appointment through the CBP One app, but remained in detention because immigration agents were suspicious of his crown tattoo, according to his mother. “There’s not a day that I don’t search social media for any new videos of him inside CECOT.” The three mothers all claim their sons are not part of Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua gang, but they do fault the men’s tattoos for causing their imprisonment. “It was the argument I always had with my son,” said Arteaga. “I always asked what his need for a tattoo was.” Her son tattooed his mother’s name “Jetzy” on his wrist, a tattoo that now serves as evidence of gang affiliation, according to court documents. It’s now been more than two months since these men were taken to El Salvador and the U.S. government continues to deport anyone who is in the country illegally after President Trump promised to deport “the worst of the worst”. “All we can do is trust that this nightmare will soon end,” said Burbano. But numbers were rising before his reelection Ahead of Memorial Day, President Trump has repeatedly taken credit for an upswing in military recruitment, claiming almost no one wanted to join the military before news of his reelection. “After years of military recruiting shortfalls, enlistments in the U.S. armed forces are now the highest in 30 years because there is such an incredible spirit in the United States of America,” the president said last week in Riyadh. In reality, military records show enlistments began rebounding from a pandemic slump long before Election Day. While numbers have continued to rise under Mr. Trump, experts say the so-called “Trump Bump”—a term used by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth— is more likely the result of recruitment reforms introduced during former President Joe Biden’s term. Mr. Trump has also exaggerated the scale of the recovery, claiming enlistments have hit modern highs. But public data shows the military is still attracting fewer recruits than it did earlier this decade. Trump’s misleading claim that military recruitment reached 30-year records Asked for comment on the source of the defense secretary and president’s claims, a White House official and the Defense Department both pointed to a statement by chief Pentagon spokesperson and senior adviser Sean Parnell. “Since Nov. 5, 2024, the U.S. military has seen the highest recruiting percentage of mission achieved in 30 years,” Parnell said in April. Publicly available reports from the Defense Department confirm recruiters are currently meeting their goals for the year, but its monthly reports — only published online since 2016 — also show the services frequently adjust annual targets, making historical comparisons less meaningful. For example, after falling short of their goals in fiscal years 2022 and 2023 amid a tight job market, the Army cut its goal from 65,000 to 55,000 active-duty soldiers for the fiscal year 2024. After meeting that benchmark, it’s aiming for 61,000 recruits this year. These shifting goal posts complicate claims of record performance. When measured by total recruits — the metric Mr. Trump appeared to explicitly reference — active military enlistments have risen year over year but remain below recent peaks. In March, the most recent month available, around 13,000 new people enlisted, an increase of nearly 50% over the prior year, but below the 15,000 recorded in March 2018, during Mr. Trump’s first term. The figure includes all branches of the military except for the Coast Guard, which falls under the Department of Homeland Security. The highest monthly figure under Mr. Trump second term so far was in January—his inauguration month—when 15,597 recruits received basic training dates. That still trails the 16,800 recorded in January 2018 and 20,000 in August 2024 under Biden. Recruitment could surpass pre-pandemic levels by the end of fiscal 2025 in September, but it’s too early to tell. And despite recent gains, enlistments remain well below levels achieved three decades ago. In 1990, over 220,000 enlisted in the active military. Those numbers declined after the end of the Cold War and haven’t returned to that level, according to historic Defense Department data. Trump’s false claim that recruitment fell to record lows during President Biden’s last year Mr. Trump also claimed military enlistments fell to record lows during Biden’s last year in office. “Just about a year ago, it was a big story, front page of every paper all over the world, that nobody wanted to enlist in our military,” Mr. Trump said. That’s false. Defense data shows military recruitment began to recover after COVID-era declines in fiscal year 2023 and continued to grow in 2024. That year, 146,473 people signed active-duty contracts—about 12,000 more than the previous year. Mr. Trump has further suggested enlistment was at a record low right before news of his election. In fact, 10,993 people enlisted in October 2024, the last full month before Election Day, a 60% increase over the same month in 2023. Experts say recruitment reforms explain why recruitment has ticked up, despite longterm challenges Experts who study military enlistment say the continued improvements have more to do with changes in recruitment strategy and compensation than the change in commander-in-chief. Katherine Kuzminski of the Center for a New American Security credits Biden-era programs like the Army’s Future Soldier Prep Course launched in 2022 and the Navy’s Future Sailor Prep Course launched in 2023 for helping candidates struggling with enlistment requirements. In 2024, about 25% of the Army’s enlistments came through a prep course. “It’s harder to convince someone to be interested in military service than it is to train them to a standard,” Kuzminski said. Defense statistics show over 70% of American youths don’t meet qualifications for military service because of rising rates of obesity, drug use, mental health issues, and difficulties meeting educational standards. Polls show interest in service has also declined in the last decade, and defense representatives have cited flagging trust in institutions, a shrinking population of veterans who serve as models of service, and the number of job options in the private sector, depending on the strength of the economy. To better compete with private sector offers, Congress approved a 14.5% pay increase for junior enlisted troops last December that took effect this year. “It would benefit the DoD to publicly also recognize that they’ve made quite a few adjustments to the recruiting enterprise instead of the perception that’s coming out that it’s driven solely by partisan politics,” Kuzminski said, “Because I don’t think that for most American youth that’s the driving factor for their joining the military.” Laura Doan Laura Doan is a fact checker for CBS News Confirmed. The image shows the warship lying on its side, covered by large blue tarpaulins. A portion of the vessel appears to be on land. An official investigation into the accident – which Kim described as a “criminal act” – has begun, state media reported on Friday. None of the reports mentioned any casualties or injuries as a result of Thursday’s incident in the eastern port city of Chongjin. KCNA, North Korea’s official news agency, downplayed the damage in a report on Friday, saying it was “not serious” and that, contrary to initial reports, there were no holes on the ship’s bottom. “The hull starboard was scratched and a certain amount of seawater flowed into the stern section through the rescue channel,” KCNA reported. The manager of the shipyard, Hong Kil Ho, has been summoned by law enforcers, it said. It would take around 10 days to restore the destroyer’s side, according to KCNA. Kim said on Thursday that the accident was caused by “absolute carelessness, irresponsibility and unscientific empiricism”. He added that those who made “irresponsible errors” will be dealt with at a plenary meeting next month. It’s not clear what punishment they might face, but the authoritarian state has a woeful human rights record. It is uncommon for North Korea to publicly disclose local accidents – though it has done this a handful of times in the past. This particular accident comes weeks after North Korea unveiled a similar 5,000-ton destroyer, the Choe Hyon. Kim had called that warship a “breakthrough” in modernising North Korea’s navy and said it would be deployed early next year.
