Country ‘on brink’ of health disaster as cholera spreads
War-torn Sudan is now “on the brink” of a public health disaster as cholera and other deadly diseases spread, aid group, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) has warned.
In just one week, Sudan’s Health Ministry recorded that 172 people have died due to a cholera outbreak, posting on Facebook that most of the new cases are in Khartoum state.
According to local doctors, cited by Sudanese media, drone attacks have caused power outages at water purification stations, which has left people with no choice but to use unclean water.
IRC country director for Sudan Eatizaz Yousif said the civil war – now in its thrid year – “is fuelling the resurgence of cholera”.
In a statement, the IRC emphasised that cholera vaccine coverage was “low” and “essential supplies dwindling”.
The medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has warned of reports of “thousands of suspected cholera cases” in Khartoum since the middle of last month.
Its medical co-ordinator in the country, Slaymen Ammar, stated that “the conflict has clearly compromised basic infrastructure”.
In a press release, he said that healthcare in parts of the capital was “either unavailable or unaffordable”, adding that “many of the remaining health workers had no choice but to leave” due to fighting.
Mr Ammar adds that the few remaining health facilities are overwhelmed.
As many as 500 cases of cholera were reported in just one day in the past week in Khartoum, MSF said.
Aside from the Khartoum area, cases were also cited in northern and southern Sudan, the AFP news agency reports.
Most people with cholera have mild symptoms or none at all.
However, the disease can be a fatal if it causes severe diarrhoea, requiring antibiotics and IV fluids for treatment, according to the World Health Organization.
More than 150,000 people have been killed during Sudan’s conflict, which began over two years ago when Sudan’s army and the RSF began a vicious struggle for power.
Millions have been forced from their homes and the conflict has plunged the country into what the UN calls the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

Nintendo reveals which games aren’t backwards compatible with Switch 2
Nintendo reveals which games aren’t backwards compatible with Switch 2
Ahead of the Switch 2’s June 5 launch, Nintendo provided an update on which Switch games aren’t fully backwards compatible with the new console. The list includes several games with issues that are currently being investigated, as well as some video streaming apps.
Ever since the Switch 2’s announcement, Nintendo has been vague about what Switch games would and wouldn’t work on its new console. Many fans previously assumed that backwards compatibility issues would be limited to games that utilized the Joy-****’s IR sensors. Nintendo has now clarified exactly what won’t work on the new system, as well as what games currently have problems that it plans to address around launch day.
The list of apps that won’t work at all is small and mostly pertains to streaming apps. Hulu and Crunchyroll won’t work on Switch 2, in addition to InkyPen, Niconico, and Abema. Aside from those, the only game that outright isn’t compatible with the console is the Nintendo Labo’s VR kit, as the newly designed device won’t fit in the cardboard headset.
Aside from that small list, Nintendo shared a much longer list of games that currently have issues that are being investigated. Games with start up issues include Dead by Daylight, South Park: The Fractured But Whole, Warframe, and the YouTube app. There is no official word on whether or not those issues will be fixed.
Alongside that list, Nintendo released a list of games that currently have problems, but it plans to resolve by or around launch. That list includes Doom: Eternal, Fortnite, and Pizza Tower.
Nintendo also confirmed a list of games which will not be playable with the Switch 2’s newly designed Joy-cons. Those games will still work on Switch 2, but players will need to connect the original Switch’s Joy-cons to play them.

French MPs back law to allow assisted dying
French MPs back law to allow assisted dying
French MPs have voted to allow some people in the last stages of a terminal illness the right to assisted dying.
The National Assembly approved the bill, which is backed by President Emmanuel Macron, by 305 votes to 199. It will now go to the upper house, the Senate, before a second reading in the National Assembly. Supporters hope it will become law by 2027.
It would make France the eighth country in the European Union to allow a version of assisted dying.
As currently framed, the French version would be not as permissive as in the Netherlands or neighbouring Belgium which were the first countries in Europe to legalise assisted dying.
A separate bill creating a right to palliative care went through unopposed. It is estimated that 48% of French patients who require palliative care do not get it.
Much of the two-week debate in the Assembly had focused on the conditions under which a patient could qualify for assisted dying.
The approved formula is for “people struck by a serious and incurable disease” that is “life-threatening and in its advanced or terminal phases”, who are in “constant physical or psychological suffering”.
The patient would have to be able to “freely manifest his or her intention”. They would have to wait 48 hours and then confirm it.
Once authorised, the lethal dose would be self-administered by the patient; or by a medical assistant if the patient were incapable.
Authorisation would be provided by a doctor, but only after consultation with peers.
MPs were allowed a free vote on the bill – a reflection of how differences of opinion on the matter defy party lines. Broadly though, the measure was backed by the centre and left and opposed on the right and populist right.
Conservative critics – echoing views of the once-dominant Catholic Church – were concerned that definitions in the bill were too broad, opening the way for assisted dying for patients who might have years to live.
As in other countries where the ethical issues have been hotly debated, opponents fear that vulnerable elderly people could feel under pressure to die in order to remove a burden from their families.
In a demonstration against the bill outside the National Assembly on Saturday, one 44-year-old woman suffering from Parkinson’s disease said it would be like a “loaded pistol left on my bedside table”.
Some left-wingers wanted to toughen the government’s bill by widening access to assisted dying to minors, non-French nationals and patients who leave instructions before going into a coma.
Under the bill, medical staff who oppose assisted dying would not be obliged to carry it out. However, it would be a crime punishable by two years in jail to try to block an act of assisted dying.
Conservatives wanted to create another crime – of incitement to assisted dying. But this amendment was rejected by MPs.
Prime Minister François Bayrou, who is a practising Catholic, said that if he had a vote on the bill he would abstain. As he is not an MP, he did not have a vote.

American Music Awards: Six highlights
American Music Awards: Six highlights

There were big wins for Billie Eilish, Beyoncé, Eminem and Sir Rod Stewart at the American Music Awards (AMAs).
Monday’s event in Las Vegas was hosted – and in some ways dominated – by the evening’s host, singer and actress Jennifer Lopez.
There were also peformances from stars including Benson Boone, Gwen Stefani and another award-winner, Janet Jackson.
Here’s some key takeaways from the ceremony.
Billie Eilish wins big as stars stay awayGetty Images
Billie Eilish thanked fans over video link
Billie Eilish won seven prizes at the fan-voted awards show, sweeping most of the major catergories in the process, including artist and album of the year – for Hit Me Hard and Soft – as well as song of the year, Birds of a Feather.
The singer, 23, who also won the award for favourite touring artist, was not there to collect her awards in person however, as she was busy doing precisely that – being on tour in Europe.
Eminem took home the awards for favourite male hip-hop artist and favourite hip-hop album, but he wasn’t there either.
And nor was favourite female country artist-winner Beyoncé, who won favourite country album.
Jennifer Lopez sets tongues waggingGetty Images
With many stars not in attendance, the focus fell almost fully on host Jennifer Lopez – aka J. Lo.
The star, 55, danced to a medley of hits including Eilish’s Birds of a Feather, Sabrina Carpenter’s Espresso and Beyoncé’s Texas Hold ‘Em.
But she will be remembered most on the night for having locked lips both male and female dancers during her performances.
One viewer joked online that it made them “cringe”, while another said the singer had “lost the plot”. The sweat dripping emoji was used by another fan to describe the situation.
Sir Rod is left ‘flabbergasted’Getty Images
Sir Rod Stewart will play the Glastonbury legends slot next month
Sir Rod Stewart got a huge surprise on stage when he was presented with the lifetime achievement award by his children.
The father-of-eight seemed shocked to be introduced to the stage by five of his own grown-up kids.
“I’m absolutely flabbergasted,” said Sir Rod. “I didn’t know they were here – my children.”
The former Faces frontman, 80, thanked his bandmates, past and present, noting how when he was young he had a “burning ambition to sing”.
“That’s all I wanted to do. I didn’t want to be rich or famous. And here I am a few years later, picking up this wonderful award,” he said.
Sing is precisely what he then did, performing his 1988 track Forever Young.
Shaboozey’s reaction attracts attentionGetty Images
Another highlight on the night for many on social media it seems was Shaboozey’s reaction to Megan Moroney declaring that the Carter Family “basically invented country music”.
The Carter Family – which featured singer June Carter who later went on to perform with her husband Johnny Cash – was an influential American folk music group that recorded and performed between the 1920s and 1950s.
Shaboozey, whose hits include A Bar Song (Tipsy), appeared to pause and give Moroney a slightly sceptical look before letting out a little laugh in response, while they were jointly presenting an award.
The Hollywood Reporter noted Shaboozey’s apparent “side eye” look soon went viral.
Janet Jackson is officially an iconGetty Images
But you knew that already, right?
Janet Jackson, 59, collected the icon award and showed why by performing a medley of her songs including Someone to Call My Lover and All for You.
“I’m so grateful. I mean, no disrespect in any way, but I don’t consider myself an icon,” she said.
Echoing Sir Rod, she added: “My family, myself, our dream wasn’t ever to be famous; we weren’t raised like that.”
She continued: “We always had a special love for music, dancing and singing, and fame came with the result of hard work and dedication.”
Benson Boone channels his inner Peter PanGetty Images
Or is this look more Captain Hook?
The back-flipping pop star performed on the night and he looked resplendent in his green suit jacket and trousers while posing for pictures on the red carpet.
The 22-year-old changed into a floral purple number for his typically acrobatic live performance of recent single Mystical Magical.
Getty Images
Other performances on the night saw Gloria Estefan celebrate the legacy of Latin music by doing the Conga, and Gwen Stefani celebrate her noughties hits.
Other winners on the night included R&B singer SZA, Post Malone, Gracie Abrams and Becky G, as well as Kendrick Lamar and collaborators Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars.
Check out the full list of winners here, and a video of the action below.

Billy Madison Is The First Classic Adam Sandler Movie To Get 4K Blu-Ray Release
Billy Madison Is The First Classic Adam Sandler Movie To Get 4K Blu-Ray Release
Adam Sandler has starred in dozens of comedies, but most of his best films released in the back half of the ’90s. Despite being responsible for some of the most beloved comedy movies of the past 30 years, the vast majority of films starring Sandler haven’t received 4K Blu-ray releases. But maybe the floodgates will open now that the film that put him on the map in 1995 is getting a 4K Blu-ray edition for its 30th anniversary. Billy Madison returns to school on July 29, and you can watch his quest to become a scholar in 4K by preordering a copy at Amazon or Walmart.
After reading about the 4K Blu-ray release, you can check out the long list of Adam Sandler movies on Blu-ray that we compiled below.
$45
This edition of Billy Madison gets you a 4K scan from the 35mm original camera negative, complete with HDR support. A standard Blu-ray format is also included. The bundle comes with plenty of bonus features to enjoy, though most of these are only available in standard Blu-ray, not 4K. Preordering from Amazon or Walmart means you won’t be charged until the item ships, and you’ll be eligible for any discounts between now and release. If you can’t wait until July 29, a Blu-ray version is available for just $9.
Billy Madison (4K Blu-ray) Bonus Features
You’ll find a bunch of bonus features packed into the Billy Madison (4K Blu-ray). It includes two discs (4K and standard Blu-ray), though note that not all the features are available in 4K. Many of these bonus features are carried over from the existing products, but the audio commentary from Bryan Connolly and Wilson Smith is exclusive to this upcoming 4K Blu-ray.

Adam Sandler Double Features on Blu-ray
If you’re interested in pairing the upcoming 4K edition of Billy Madison with additional Sandler flicks, you’ll be glad to know most of the classics are available on Blu-ray. Some of his newer films (like all the Netflix releases) are limited to streaming, but hits like Big Daddy and Mr. Deeds are available for cheap on Blu-ray. If you want to get caught up on the action before Happy Gilmore 2 arrives in July, you can pick up the original Happy Gilmore (Blu-ray) for just $8.82. Happy Gilmore is also available in a bundle with Billy Madison for $10.33. Another notable bundle is Big Daddy and Mr. Deeds for only $9.55.
Two notable Adam Sandler movies already have 4K Blu-ray releases, but that’s because they are part of the Criterion Collection. Unsurprisingly, neither film–Uncut Gems and Punch-Drunk Love–are “traditional” Sandler movies. That said, Sandler was fantastic in both movies, and the Criterion Collection editions are great.
A few of his newer movies are also available in 4K–and these are part of the fantastic Criterion Collection, meaning they’re packed with bonuses and unique box art.

The best CPU choice for high end gaming, AMD’s 9800XD, drops below MSRP
It’s only been around for the last 6 months, but the Ryzen 7 9800X3D has cemented itself as one of the best gaming CPUs on the market. With its hefty stacked 3D V-Cache, it has been the in-demand CPU for gaming since its launch and has previously been very hard to obtain. Now, with more available stock, we’ve seen the processor not only become readily available but also undergo its first price cut below the original MSRP.
Available at Amazon, you can now pick up the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor for $472. It’s not an absolutely massive saving, but it’s cheaper, and hopefully a sign that computer components may weather the storm in terms of pricing due to tariffs and other economic influences.
You can find more details of the performance of the Ryzen 7 processor in our detailed review of the 9800X3D. With an 8% performance gain on the previous generation 7800X3D, and easily outperforms the competition from Intel in gaming benchmarks. Walmart fined for shipping toy guns to New York
Walmart fined for shipping toy guns to New York
New York Attorney General Letitia James holds a press conference following a ruling against former U.S. President Donald Trump ordering him to pay $354.9 million and barring him from doing business in New York State for three years, in the Manhattan borough of New York City, U.S., February 16, 2024.
David Dee Delgado | Reuters
Walmart agreed to pay a small fine and promised to ensure its third-party resellers are unable to sell realistic looking toy guns to buyers in New York, after state Attorney General Letitia James said Tuesday that the retail giant’s online store shipped them to the state.
The settlement comes nearly a decade after Walmart, Amazon, Sears and other retailers entered into a consent order and judgment with New York’s previous attorney general, in which they agreed to keep toy guns that resemble actual deadly weapons off their shelves statewide and they paid civil penalties that topped $300,000.
The 2015 order was part of a nationwide reckoning over realistic looking toy guns in the wake of the fatal shooting of Tamir Rice, a 12 year-old Cleveland boy who was killed by police in November 2014 while holding a pellet gun.
The New York law bans retailers from selling or shipping toy guns of certain colors — ******, dark blue, silver, or aluminum — that look like real weapons.

Toy guns sold in the state must be “made in bright colors or made entirely of transparent or translucent materials,” with businesses subject to a fine of $1,000 per violation, according to James’ office.
James said on Tuesday that an investigation by her office found that Walmart’s online store had shipped at least nine realistic looking toy guns sold by third-party sellers to New York City, Westchester County and Western New York.
Read more CNBC politics coverage
But the investigation also found that between March 2020 and November 2023, at least 46 imitation weapons that violate New York state law were purchased by consumers in the state through the Walmart.com platform, the settlement revealed.
“Realistic-looking toy guns can put communities in serious danger and that is why they are banned in New York,” James said in a statement.
“Walmart failed to prevent its third-party sellers from selling realistic-looking toy guns to New York addresses, violating our laws and putting people at risk,” she said.
“The ban on realistic-looking toy guns is meant to keep New Yorkers safe and my office will not hesitate to hold any business that violates that law accountable.”
Walmart must pay $14,000 in penalties and $2,000 in fees under the settlement, the AG’s office said.
CNBC has requested comment from Walmart, which neither admitted nor denied the findings by James’ office in its investigation.
As part of the settlement, Walmart is required to prohibit third parties from offering for ***** or selling any of the imitation guns covered by the state law to buyers in New York.
“Walmart shall terminate the ability of a third party from being able to list and sell toy guns and imitation weapons on Walmart.com when it has determined that a third party has engaged in conduct” that violates that restriction on three separate occasions, the settlement said.
And “Walmart shall implement and maintain policies and procedures reasonably designed to prevent such third parties from offering for *****, exposing for *****, or selling Prohibited Items on Walmart.com for importation, holding for *****, or distribution to New York,” the settlement says.

Ex-Fortnite devs found new studio and reveal its chaotic debut game, Lort
Ex-Fortnite devs found new studio and reveal its chaotic debut game, Lort
Big Distraction, a newly formed independent game studio founded by former Fortnite developers, announced its debut game, Lort. It’s a one to eight player co-op fantasy roguelike set to launch later this year on PC.
Formed in 2023, Big Distraction is led by the former Lead Producer and Marketing Lead on Fortnite Battle Royale. It’s currently an 11-person team comprised of veterans from studios like Dice, Blizzard, and MachineGames. Big Distraction’s initial goal was to create a game that it could launch within two years of the studio’s founding. Lort is the end result of that effort.
Lort is a co-op action roguelike set in a comedic fantasy world. Its debut trailer emphasizes a gameplay loop that will have players exploring a procedurally generated map in search of loot, scaling their power up, and hunting down bosses. Think of something like Risk of Rain 2, but with more more absurd humor.
***
Players will start a run by squading up with up to eight players. They’ll be able to choose from three character classes initially, including a wizard, warrior and ranger, but Big Distraction has ideas for more. There are no team composition restrictions, so players can run with a team of eight wizards if they so desire. From there, they’ll explore an open area, hunt down treasure chests featuring over-the-top weapons, and get upgrades that boost their stats.
Since it’s all high fantasy themed, players will fight with weapons like maces, oversized hammers, and bows. In hands-off demo footage, I watched a crew take down hoards of Dragon Quest-like slimes and other colorful monsters using over the top spells, like one that whacks foes with an enormous hunk of wood. Big Distraction says that the power progression is a major focus of a run, as it will let players eventually put together builds that feel like they can break the game. It all makes for a multiplayer game that looks lighthearted and chaotic.
Lort is set to release in the fourth quarter of 2025. It will release on PC and be compatible with Steam Deck.

Roglic quits, Del Toro wobbles, Italy joy as Giro boils
Roglic quits, Del Toro wobbles, Italy joy as Giro boils
A gripping 16th stage of the Giro d’Italia has ended with the pre-race favourite out, the leader just hanging on to the maglia rosa, and Italy celebrating a 1-2-3.
Amid the chaos Australia’s Michael Storer moved up five places to be one of around eight riders still in contention to be in pink on the podium in Rome on Sunday.
Pre-race favourite Primoz Roglic, the 2023 champion, abandoned after suffering his fourth ****** in barely a week in a stage initially made treacherous by torrential rain.
Isaac del Toro, the 21-year-old ******** riding his second grand tour, held on to the maglia rosa, but only just as he was broken by Simon Yates on the final climb of four, totalling 4,900m of elevation.
The demanding ride through the Dolomites began in rain but ended in sun, and it shone on the host nation.
Christian Scaron led home an all-Italian trio for the first home stage win of this year’s race, hand-in-hand with the mountains leader and XDS Astana teammate Lorenzo Fortunato. Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull–Bora–Hansgrohe) was third.
However, another Italian, Alessio Martinelli, was hospitalised after sliding into a ravine.
The VG Group Bardiani-CSF Faizane team said Martinelli was “conscious and in stable condition.” He was carried up from the ravine on a stretcher by an Alpine rescue team.
As the gradients rose on the 203km leg from Piazzola Sul Brenta to San Valentino so did the drama.
Roglic (Red Bull–Bora–Hansgrohe) was 10th at the start of the day but a fall that also involved Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) forced him to finally quit with a series of injuries.
Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers), the 2021 champion, fell in a separate incident, but continued.
The absence of reigning champion Tadej Pogacar and Dane Jonas Vingegaard had meant Roglic was favourite when the Giro began.
As crashes derailed the Slovenian’s chances Del Toro had begun to look as if he could hold on to his lead after a week in pink. But the UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider’s lead was reduced from one minute, 20 seconds to 26 seconds ahead of Briton Yates (Visma–Lease a Bike) and, 11 seconds further back, Carapaz.
The Ecuadorian, who won in 2019, had been 2:07 back at the start of the stage but produced a powerful ride to finish fourth in the stage.
“In end I didn’t have the best legs. They weren’t bad but they weren’t sufficient. I was happy to make it to the finish,” Del Toro said. “I hope it goes better the next few days.”
Del Toro’s teammate Juan Ayuso, who was third at the start, 1.26 behind, cracked and came in 35th, 14.:47 adrift and out of GC contention.
Storer (Tudor) acquitted himself well, finishing seventh, 1.52 behind the leaders, and is up from 12th to seventh overall, 3.31 behind Del Toro.
Wednesday’s Stage 17 is a 155 km leg from San Michele All’Adige to Bormio featuring three climbs – including the Mortirolo, one of the Giro’s toughest and most fabled.

Fantasy Life i Offers The Cheapest Paid Switch 2 Upgrade Yet
Fantasy Life i Offers The Cheapest Paid Switch 2 Upgrade Yet
Level-5 has revealed that Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time will be a Nintendo Switch 2 launch title, and that players who already own the game on Switch 1 will be able to upgrade for just $2.59.
Compared to the Nintendo Switch version, Level-5 states that Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition will feature reduced load times, improved visuals, and a higher frame rate. Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is set to retail for $62.58, reflecting the fact that a Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack from the Switch version will cost $2.59.
This is significantly cheaper than the paid upgrades for other Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games, as the upgrades for one like Kirby and the Forgotten Land will cost up to $20. The caveats to all of this is that the Digital Deluxe Edition will only be available for Switch, not Switch 2, and that several Switch 1 games are getting free upgrades for Nintendo’s new console.
Fantasy Life i is a follow-up to a cult classic 3DS title where players can take on a variety of different jobs as they live their life in a fantasy world. After several delays, Fantasy Life i finally came out earlier this month and has been a surprise hit. The same post confirming the Switch 2 version of Fantasy Life i also reveals that 500,000 copies of the game have already been sold. That sales accomplishment is being celebrated with a free in-game gift for players who enter the code A5C9X7VR.
Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time is now available for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. It will then come out on Nintendo Switch 2 as a June 5 launch title.

The Nintendo Switch 2 gets one more last-minute launch game
The Nintendo Switch 2 gets one more last-minute launch game
The Nintendo Switch 2 is getting one more launch game on June 5 in the form of Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time. Players who currently own it on Nintendo Switch will be able to upgrade to a Switch 2 edition for a fee.
Released last week, Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time is a new game by developer Level-5. It’s a sequel to Nintendo 3DS cult hit Fantasy Life, a “Slow RPG” in which players take on various jobs from woodcutter to chef. The game was a surprise hit when it released on May 21, surpassing 65,000 concurrent players on Steam at its peak. While it’s already available on Nintendo Switch, it will get a Switch 2 Edition in time for the console’s launch.
Fantasy Life i‘s pricing is a little unusual compared to other Switch 2 games. It will cost $62.58 to buy it new, while those who own it on Switch can upgrade for $2.59. Level-5 says that it won’t won’t give the game’s Digital Deluxe Edition a separate Nintendo Switch 2 edition, so players will need to buy the Switch version and then purchase the Switch 2 upgrade to get it.
The Switch 2 Edition will come with a few “significant” improvements over the current Switch version. Level-5 promises reduced loading times, improved visuals, and a more fluid frame rate (though an exact frame rate wasn’t revealed). Level-5 reminds players that the Switch 2 Edition’s upgrades will not be available when playing on the original Switch.
Fantasy Life i is a welcome addition to the Switch 2’s sizable launch line-up, which includes Mario Kart World and Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour. Last week, we praised the RPG for its laid back life sim gameplay and called it “a sweet little game for those who love doing little digital chores and feeling rewarded for every single one.”
Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time Switch 2 Edition launches on June 5. The base game is currently available on PC and Nintendo Switch.

Apple acquires RAC7, its first-ever video game studio
Apple acquires RAC7, its first-ever video game studio
Apple has acquired RAC7, the two-person video game developer behind Apple Arcade hit Sneaky Sasquatch. This is the first time that Apple has acquired a video game studio in its history, but the company describes the move as a unique situation.
RAC7 is a two-person studio whose previous credits include indie titles Dark Echo and Splitter Critters. In 2019, the team released Sneaky Sasquatch as an Apple Arcade exclusive. The adventure game was a breakout hit among the service’s 71 launch titles, according to Apple, and it has received regular updates since launch. Now, the team will continue its partnership with Apple as an internal studio.
“We love Sneaky Sasquatch and are excited that the 2-person RAC7 team has joined Apple to continue their work on it with us,” an Apple spokesperson tells Digital Trends. “We will continue to deliver a great experience for Apple Arcade players with hundreds of games from many of the best game developers in the world.”
The acquisition doesn’t necessarily signal the beginning of a new gaming strategy for the tech giant. Apple notes that the move is a unique circumstance, as it saw an opportunity to help the team grow its game more on Apple Arcade. It says that it will continue to work with third-party studios big and small to create games for the service.
Though the partnership may come as a shock to those who haven’t been following Arcade closely since its launch, it’s less surprising in context. When I spoke to Apple Arcade Senior Director Alex Rofman about the service last year, he cited Sneaky Sasquatch as one of the service’s major success stories (“We hear from customers all over the world whose kids want Sneaky Sasquatch birthday parties!” Rofman told Digital Trends at the time). RAC7 is just one of a handful of indie studios who has consistently developed for the service since its launch alongside names like Lykke Studios and Triband Games.
Even if it’s a one-off acquisition, the move signals that Apple is still committed to its Arcade service, which continues to release new games on a monthly cadence. Recent additions have included a brand new Katamari Damacy game, a sequel to Xbox Live Arcade hit Space Invaders: Infinity Gene, and Apple Vision Pro exclusive Gears & Goo.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday threatened to strip “large scale federal funding” from California if the state goes against his executive order banning transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports.
That funding could be withheld “permanently” if California continues to flout the Feb. 5 order, Trump warned on Truth Social.
The president’s post complained that a trans athlete who qualified to compete against women in an upcoming competition is “practically unbeatable.”
He wrote that he will order “local authorities, if necessary, to not allow the transitioned person to compete in the State Finals.”
Trump added that he will speak with California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, later Tuesday “to find out which way he wants to go” on the issue.
Trump did not name the athlete whose participation in women’s sports drew his ire. AB Hernandez, a California high school student and transgender athlete competing in girls track and field, has recently received media attention.
Trump’s threat to shut off federal funding could be significant for California, the world’s fourth-largest economy.
Over one-third of the state’s budget comes from the federal government, according to the California Budget and Policy Center. The state’s 2025-2026 budget includes more than $170 billion in federal funds.
The threat also carries weight in light of Trump’s increasing willingness to cancel billions of dollars in federal funds to universities, cities and other entities whose whose conduct he opposes.

Earlier Tuesday, Trump moved to cancel all remaining federal government contracts with Harvard University — reportedly totaling roughly $100 million — in the administration’s latest salvo against the elite institution.
Trump has previously threatened to withhold federal funds from Maine over the state’s compliance with Trump’s executive order barring transgender women and girls from participating in female sports.
Newsom, widely seen as a contender for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, has been a vocal critic of a number of Trump policies, including on tariffs and immigration.
He downplayed the debate over trans athletes in April, saying the issue has been “weaponized by the right to be 10x, 100x ******* than it is.”
But he also suggested in March that trans athletes participating in girls’ and women’s sports was “deeply unfair,” separating himself from many of his fellow Democrats.
“I think it’s an issue of fairness. I completely agree with you on that,” Newsom told conservative influencer Charlie Kirk on his podcast.
Newsom’s office did not immediately provide a comment in response to Trump’s post.

Everything We Know About Netflix’s Upcoming BioShock Movie
Everything We Know About Netflix’s Upcoming BioShock Movie
A film adaptation of BioShock is currently several years into development at Netflix, and while details are still relatively sparse, we do know some of what’s going on behind the scenes.
First announced in February 2022, Netflix’s BioShock movie does not yet have a release date, but more details are beginning to emerge regarding the production. If you’re interested in the current state of the film–which first entered production over 15 years ago–would you kindly keep scrolling for a detailed breakdown of everything we know about Netflix’s upcoming BioShock adaptation?
When does the BioShock movie come out?
Currently, we’ve yet to even see a trailer for the film, and Netflix hasn’t announced a release date.
Who is directing the BioShock movie?
Concept art from the canceled 2011 film depicted a very faithful recreation of Rapture, but Netflix hasn’t yet shared any promotional images for its upcoming adaptation.
Previously, a BioShock film helmed by Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski was planned for release in 2011, aiming to line up with the release of BioShock Infinite (which ended up not launching until 2013, after multiple delays). The film was to be R-rated and produced by Universal, and production was underway, with concept art for the project shared online. But by August 2009, it was announced that Verbinski had left his role as director due to budget issues, including the costs of potentially shooting overseas. The plan was for Verbinski to stay on in a producer role, with Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) replacing Verbinski as director. Verbinski and Fresnadillo planned to work together to keep the film’s budget from reaching Sky-Line heights. But for reasons unknown, production on the film was quietly halted in late 2010 or early 2011.
After that, not a peep was heard about a BioShock movie until Netflix announced in 2022 that it was teaming up with Take-Two Interactive and 2K Games to create the film, which would be a Netflix exclusive directed by Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games) and written by Michael Green (Blade Runner 2049). Green was later replaced by Justin Rhodes (Terminator: Dark Fate, Secret Level), who is re-drafting Green’s original script.
Production scaled back
All seemed well until July 2024, when it was announced that although the film was still in production, its creators were now working with a significantly scaled-back budget. At that year’s San Diego Comic-****, producer Roy Lee explained that the project had been “reconfigured” to become a “more personal” film. According to Lee, the reduction in budget was the result of a regime change that saw Dan Lin replace Scott Stuber as Netflix’s film boss.
“The new regime has lowered the budgets,” Lee said in an interview. “So we’re doing a much smaller version… It’s going to be a more personal point of view, as opposed to a grander, big project.”
BioShock film plot details
The film will reportedly be an adaptation of the original 2007 game, set in the underwater city of Rapture.
Details are scarce when it comes to the film’s plot, but it seems that Lawrence, Rhodes, and Lee are shooting for an adaptation of the original 2007 BioShock game. It’s hard to imagine how the filmmakers will bring the undersea city of Rapture to life on a reduced budget, especially given the fact that–back when Verbinski was leading production–the film’s budget was estimated to be in the $200 million range.
But despite the shrunken budget, Lawrence seems confident in the film’s future, though production certainly has obstacles to overcome.
“It’s a tricky adaptation, so there’s lots of things to figure out and to get right,” Lawrence said in a May 2025 interview. “I think we’re in a pretty good place, honestly.”
Who is starring in the BioShock film?
With the film still early in production, no official casting announcements have been made, but that hasn’t stopped some stars from throwing their hats in the ring. In March 2025, The Boys star Jack Quaid indicated interest in the film, revealing in a Reddit AMA that he’s a “huge video game nerd” with a penchant for FromSoftware games and a passion for BioShock.
“I beat Bloodborne, then I beat Sekiro, and now I’m going full boar into Elden Ring,” Quaid wrote. “Actually, the thing I use Reddit the most for is tips and tricks on beating FromSoft’s bosses.”
When asked what his “dream role” was, Quaid replied, “I would actually love to be in a live-action adaptation of BioShock–one of my favorite games of all time. I think there’s such a rich lore to that game that could be explored in a TV or movie adaptation.”
Quaid does seem well-suited to the role–he even shares a first name with BioShock’s protagonist–but despite his enthusiasm, Netflix still hasn’t revealed whether Quaid will join the cast, nor has the streaming giant shared any other details regarding which actors, if any, have signed on for roles in the film.
The future of BioShock
As for the BioShock game series, 2K’s Cloud Chamber Studios is developing the next BioShock title. But like the film, the next BioShock game is still early in production. We don’t know much about it, except that BioShock series creator Ken Levine is definitely not involved, as he is currently working on Judas, a sci-fi first-person shooter being developed by Levine’s new studio, Ghost Story Games.
Fans know what they want out of a BioShock film, but if you’d like to throw in your two cents and let us know what you’re hoping to see in Netflix’s adaptation of the game, would you kindly head to the comments section and share your thoughts?

If Ted Talks are getting shorter, what does that say about our attention spans? | Ted
If Ted Talks are getting shorter, what does that say about our attention spans? | Ted
Name: Ted Talks
Age: Ted started in 1984.
And has Ted been talking ever since? Ted – short for Technology, Entertainment, Design – is an American-********* non-profit media organisation that has an annual conference …
I know, and they do the inspirational online talks. Correct, under the slogan “Ideas change everything”.
Anyway, what about them? They’re shorter.
The talks? Than what? Than before.
How much shorter? Six minutes.
Says who? Says Elif Shafak.
The Turkish-British novelist? Novelist, essayist, public speaker, activist. She was talking at the Hay festival, in Wales.
What did she say? That when she first did a Ted Talk she was given a limit of 19 minutes, but a decade later she was told to keep it to a trim 13.
Why? That’s what she asked Ted.
And Ted said? According to Shafak, TED said: “Well, the world’s average attention span has shrunk.”
How did that make her feel? “Really sad. We are incapable of listening to a talk for more than a few minutes.” She went on to say that it was because we are living “in an age of hyper-information”.
Too much to take in? Exactly. “We cannot process this much information,” she continued. “And in the long run it makes us tired, demoralised, then numb because we stop caring.”
My god, sounds terminal. Is it true, that our attention spans have shrunk? A lack of long-term studies means we don’t know for sure, but the public seems to think it has.
Tell me more. But get on with it. A study by King’s College London in 2022 found that 49% of people believe their attention spans have become shorter, 50% say they can’t stop checking their phones …
Young people probably. Nope. Also a struggle for the middle-aged. And 50% of people also believed – wrongly – that the average attention span for adults today is just eight seconds.
Sorry, what were we talking about again? Short attention spans.
Oh yes. I knew that. What about books though, are they getting shorter too? Well, interestingly, a 2015 study suggested the opposite, that they were 25% longer than they were 15 years earlier.
I’m sensing there’s a but coming. But the longlist for this year’s International Booker includes eight books that are less than 200 pages.
What about films, they’re definitely getting longer, right? The short answer: no. Slightly longer answer: again, we just think they are, probably because of marketing. Studios want to incentivise people to spend money on a ticket, which they do by telling you it’s big, epic and special.
Hang on, so we think attention is going down but it might not be, and films are getting longer, but they’re not? Very perceptive. Someone should do a Ted Talk about it.
Do say: “Can you even change everything in 13 minutes?”
Don’t say: “Hurry up, you’re losing the room.”

Hangry Petz brings the ill-tempered toys to mobile, out now
Hangry Petz is coming to mobile with a new action RPG
Explore a city as the characters from this underfed toy line
Unlock new zones, restore the Hangry Treehouse and keep their hunger bars filled
While the digital world may have put paid to the primacy of toys, for whatever reason, fuzzy, cuddly plushies remain a much-loved part of every kid’s toybox. And they seem to be growing odder and odder, with the titular Hangry Petz now coming to mobile, alongside their underfed attitude.
These adorable, chubby animals are, as you might expect, always irate if not properly fed (wouldn’t you be?). Hangry Petz (the game) sees you exploring a city while playing as one of the petz in this casual action RPG. You’ll need to restore the Hangry Treehouse and unlock new zones, all while keeping their hunger bars appropriately topped up.
It’s certainly an interesting idea for a kid-friendly action RPG to have characters that need constant care and attention. Certainly, you can draw more than a few parallels to something such as Tamagotchis, for example.
Hunger strike
At the moment, it’d be a misnomer to call the Hangry Petz brand ubiquitous, but this latest release does show us how important getting something interactive as a tie-in is to these toys. In that way, there are a lot of interesting questions to be asked about how physical toys and the digital world interact.
But, enough about that. Feature-wise, there’s plenty to enjoy here, and although it won’t be competing with any major open-world heavyweights anytime soon, Hangry Petz looks set to offer a comforting promotional experience that’ll surely have many young fans adding these strange, rounded animals to their Christmas lists.
If you’d prefer something geared towards gamers who prefer a bit more of a cerebral experience, why not stay Ahead of the Game with our feature of the same name? This week, Catherine digs into Eclipsoul, a fantasy strategy RPG that has just a hint of the famously stylish Hades about it.

Post Office payouts ‘not by kangaroo court’, says oversight body
Post Office payouts ‘not by kangaroo court’, says oversight body

Compensation for sub-postmasters is not being decided by a “kangaroo court”, the body overseeing the payouts has said, pushing back against allegations made by Sir Alan Bates.
Sir Alan, who led the campaign for justice, said he had been made a “take it or leave it” offer that was less than half the amount he was claiming.
The “goal posts” had moved and claims had been “knocked back”, he said, in ways he saw as unfair to sub-postmasters, many of whom have been waiting years for redress.
However, the Horizon Compensation Advisory Board has rejected his criticism, saying it was following a process agreed by Sir Alan, designed to resolve the outstanding cases.
Writing in the Sunday Times, Sir Alan had suggested the process was not following established standards, describing it as a “quasi-kangaroo court”.
The board, made up of parliamentarians and academics, issued a statement on Tuesday saying: “We do not agree [with the criticisms].”
It said Sir Alan had been “closely involved” in setting up the process for deciding compensation, which included a final assessment from a “highly respected” judge.
“That was what happened in Sir Alan’s case,” the board said.
“It is only a ‘take it or leave it’ decision in the sense that at some stage the matter has to come to an end and someone has to decide, in order to bring fair closure to so many who have been harmed.”
Between 1999 and 2015, more than 900 sub-postmasters were wrongly prosecuted after the faulty Horizon IT system indicated shortfalls in Post Office branch accounts.
Sir Alan led a group of 555 sub-postmasters who took part in the landmark group legal action against the Post Office.
Their fight for justice was brought to wider public attention last year by an ITV drama about the scandal, Mr Bates vs The Post Office.
The government went on to set up a specific compensation fund to ensure these sub-postmasters received extra money to reflect the gravity of their situations, but progress has been described as slow and many are still waiting for a payout.
Under the Group Litigation Order (GLO) scheme, claimants can either receive £75,000 or seek their own settlement.
Sir Alan said the latest offer made to him amounted to 49.2% of his original claim.
He said promises that compensation schemes would be “non-legalistic” had turned out to be “worthless”.

The Emperor Would ***** at the Space Marine 1 Remaster for What It Represents
The Emperor Would ***** at the Space Marine 1 Remaster for What It Represents
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine – Master Crafted Edition is coming out on June 10, 2025, for Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Xbox Game Pass. Announced during the recent Warhammer Skulls showcase, the Space Marine 1 remaster will also bring back Relic Entertainment, the developer of the original.
As you’d expect, a lot of fans are excited to dive back into the game. Especially after the success of Space Marine 2. But while it might be a return to old roots for some fans, the Emperor of Mankind might not agree. For the Emperor, it’s part of a creeping trend in gaming that even he will find is heresy.
The Space Marine 1 remaster is nothing short of heresy
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine – Master Crafted Edition is coming after the massive success of Space Marine 2, which dropped in 2024 and quickly sold over 4.5 million copies. It quickly landed on Game of the Year lists and revived a franchise that was once left abandoned. But now, it seems like we’re getting more Warhammer.

— Pirat_Nation (@Pirat_Nation) May 22, 2025
When Space Marine first launched in 2011, it was an unexpected pivot from Relic, known then for strategy games. It blended hack-and-slash action with Gears of War-style shooting. It was good, but nothing revolutionary. And for over a decade now, it was left alone until it got a sequel in 2024.
But let’s not be blind: remasters exist because they sell. It doesn’t matter if it’s the ****** Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, Resident Evil 4 Remake, or Final Fantasy VII Remake; when done right, we’ve seen how popular it can get. But the gaming industry shouldn’t take the path of just cashing in on old nostalgia.
I have to say…
What a great time for Space Marine fans.
Space Marine 2 was great and a huge success with More content coming.
Space Marine 3 is Now in Development.

— Jamie Moran (@JamieMoranUK) May 24, 2025
The biggest reason we get for these remakes and remasters is that it lets new fans and players experience these iconic games. This is very true. Another reason we’ve heard is that this lets newer or inexperienced developers get more experience while the main teams work on new games. But wouldn’t that mean that we wouldn’t get any new ideas and progress?
The Emperor could not stand this kind of tradition
This would be a high degree of heresy. | Image Credit: Relic Entertainment
Warhammer 40K is a universe that we know for the endless battle against the darkness, and thrives on invention and expansion. The Emperor did not unite the Imperium by recycling past victories, he led mankind to the future through sacrifice, determination, and ambition. A Space Marine 1 remaster may please those looking for a nostalgia fix, but it is not the way of the Emperor.
Of course, many players will enjoy the Space Marine 1 remaster, and that’s fine. The game’s no-nonsense action and tight multiplayer hold up, especially if Relic Entertainment is coming back. But let’s not pretend this is a bold step forward for the franchise. The Emperor of Mankind would not allow for the world of Warhammer to follow these trends.
What we should be excited for is Space Marine 3, confirmed earlier this year, and the future it promises for the franchise. This is not to say all remasters are inherently bad. But they might all be bad to the Emperor. If the Emperor stood over *****’s strategy today, He would not salute. He would *****.

Navitas Soars on Nvidia Deal: Breaking Down Its Tech and Outlook
Navitas Soars on Nvidia Deal: Breaking Down Its Tech and Outlook
It is not every day that a stock soars over 164%, but that is exactly what happened to little-known chip company Navitas Semiconductor on May 22. The stock exploded in value after announcing a partnership with chip giant NVIDIA (NASDAQ:). Navitas calls itself a “next-generation power semiconductor company.” However, what does this actually mean?
The analysis below will break down Navitas’ technology. This is essential to understand why NVIDIA would want to partner with this firm that is in a bit of a rut. Navitas has generated only $74 million in revenue over the last 12 months and saw sales decline nearly 40% last quarter. The company is also deeply unprofitable, achieving an adjusted operating margin of -84% last quarter. However, there is reason to believe its tech could be groundbreaking going forward.
Navitas: Innovating the Foundation of Semiconductors
So what exactly makes Navitas’ power chips “next generation”? It all comes back to the foundation of semiconductors, specifically the material companies build them on. Traditionally, a silicon wafer serves as the base for most semiconductors.
Silicon has dominated the industry for years and continues to do so.
However, semiconductors can use other materials as their foundation. This includes silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN). Navitas calls its chips next-generation for a good reason. They use SiC and GaN, creating chips that are fundamentally different and more advanced than standard silicon.
SiC and GaN-based chips can offer significant advantages over silicon. For example, Navitas says a GaN-based phone charger can charge a phone three times faster than silicon. However, these chips also have strong use cases for AI data centers, of which NVIDIA has taken notice.
NVIDIA Partners With Navitas for Future Generation Servers
Through its partnership with Navitas, NVIDIA is planning for the future. NVIDIA plans to use Navitas’ GaN and SiC chips to power its Rubin Ultra server racks, which do not come out until mid-2027. GaN and SiC power chips have several key advantages. They can handle higher voltages much more efficiently. Plus, they fit into smaller packages compared to silicon power chips.
As AI becomes more complex, servers will need to consume much more power. To make this feasible, NVIDIA wants to re-engineer how power coming from the grid flows into a data center and eventually to each of its advanced AI chips.
The electricity coming directly from the grid is very high voltage. So, data centers must convert it to lower voltages to make it usable by NVIDIA’s chips. Traditionally, this requires many conversions, resulting in energy loss each time. NVIDIA is looking to reduce the number of conversions.
This means that each power chip involved in conversion has to handle higher voltages. Silicon chips become inefficient and large when doing this. This means that higher energy loss occurs and that more space gets taken up, leaving less space for NVIDIA’s computing chips.
This creates a significant need for Navitas’s GaN and SiC chips, which are more efficient at higher voltages and are smaller.
The Future Potential for Navitas Is Real, but Near-Term Downside Seems Likely
One might ask: if GaN and SiC chips are so much better than silicon chips, then why are Navitas’ revenues so low? The answer is likely because these chips can be much more expensive, and their benefits have yet to outweigh the costs.
However, NVIDIA’s partnership with them is evidence that this is changing. In a sense, Navitas has been playing the long game. It has known that future technology would eventually need its chips. It has prioritized becoming an expert in these chips rather than trying to meet the market where it is now.
Analysts expect the company’s revenue to pick up significantly in 2026 and 2027 as its $450 million in design wins convert into production and revenue. This should also substantially benefit profitability. This all sets up Navitas for a significant opportunity to achieve long-term success.
However, given the stock’s meteoric rise, it will likely face downward momentum in the coming months. The recent news will probably fade over time. There doesn’t appear to be any short-term catalysts for this name, unless another unexpected announcement comes up.
The company’s earnings release in August might lift the stock again if it raises guidance or shares important NVIDIA information. Overall, Navitas remains a highly interesting long-term opportunity, but not necessarily one to pound the table for at current prices.

After March’s low point, Western Europe’s diesel share rallied a little in April – GlobalData
After March’s low point, Western Europe’s diesel share rallied a little in April – GlobalData
Most markets in the region experienced a higher diesel share in April than was seen in March, though the shift overall was not very significant. Sales of battery electric vehicles remained on a modest growth trend in April meaning that the rise in diesel was at the expense of the gasoline/gasoline hybrid segment.
However, it should be noted that fluctuations are modest and that diesel, far from being in recovery mode, continues to ebb away gradually from the region’s passenger car segment. The April result brought share back to the level seen at the start of the year, with the year-on-year decline being small, at just -2.7 pp for April, and -3.0 pp for the first four months.
Source: GlobalData
Diesel sales volume for April was just under 120,000 units which is a fall of 27,000 over April 2024. To date 468,000 diesel car sales have been recorded, versus 592,000 for the first four months of 2024 – a 125,000 decline. Germany has been the biggest contributor to this decline, with a 40,000 fall in diesel car demand so far this year. No doubt the awakening of its BEV car sector has impacted ICE car demand, including diesel. Germany battery electric sales to April this year were 48,000 units more than in 2024.

The four types of imagination and how they create our worlds
The four types of imagination and how they create our worlds
When did you last imagine? Very recently is the likely answer. Indeed, we spend as much as a quarter to a half of our waking lives daydreaming. Perhaps counterintuitively, though, our imagination isn’t a single thing. Rather, the latest research suggests it exists in at least four forms.
1. Reproductive imagination
Conjure up the image of an apple in your mind’s eye. Is it green or red? Does its skin shine? Does it have a stalk? Can you get a sense of its weight as you gently twirl it? Does it have a scent? If these questions make sense to you, you have created a “sensory image” of an apple. This kind of imagination is known as reproductive. You know an apple’s properties, so you can reproduce apple-like sensations in the absence of the real thing. (Those who are born blind don’t have the visual element of this sort of imagination, but can, of course, imagine movement, a sense of space, smells, sounds and so on).
When you do so, research suggests, the brain regions that activate strongly when you look at an apple activate weakly, giving your imagery its visual feel. We know this because brain imaging has shown directly that visual cortices fire up when we visualise things. Plus, forming an image can have similar physiological effects to looking at the real thing. For example, if you imagine looking into the sun, your pupils will constrict.
2. Creative imagination
Once we can create images of things in their absence, there is plenty of scope for tinkering with them. When we do this, we…
