  2. Affirming Canada’s sovereignty and other throne speech takeaways Affirming Canada’s sovereignty and other throne speech takeaways Watch: Borders, diversity and the US: Key highlights from the King’s speech in Canada In Speech to the Throne delivered by King Charles, Canada sought to define its place in an uncertain world and its relationship to the US. It also laid out priorities for Canada’s new Prime Minister Mark Carney, whose Liberals won the country’s general election in April – from building new trade ties to bolstering its military and developing major infrastructure projects. Here are five takeaways from Tuesday’s speech. A direct message to the US on sovereignty Carney’s invitation to King Charles to visit Canada was in part a message to US President Donald Trump, who has made repeated remarks undermining its sovereignty. Tensions with the US were a theme throughout, though Trump was never mentioned by name. The speech opened with a wave of patriotism as a trade war with the US, Canada’s largest economic partner, looms. The King spoke of the “pleasure and pride” of being in the country “as we witness Canadians coming together in a renewed sense of national pride, unity, and hope”. He expressed his “admiration for Canada’s unique identity” and its growth since the last time a Sovereign opened parliament – Queen Elizabeth II in 1955. (She gave a second throne speech 20 years later). It has become “a bold, ambitious, innovative country”. “The Crown has for so long been a symbol of unity for Canada,” the King said. “It also represents stability and continuity from the past to the present. As it should, it stands proudly as a symbol of Canada today, in all her richness and dynamism.” The speech concluded on a similar note: “As the anthem reminds us: The True North is indeed strong and free!” The King’s decision to open parliament – a role traditionally left to the governor general, who is the monarch’s top representative in Canada – is seen as a symbolic show of support for the commonwealth country. The speech was written on the advice of Canada’s government. Canada in an uncertain world Another major theme of the speech is how Canada will face a world with “unprecedented challenges, generating uncertainties across the continents”. Another nod to the US and tensions between the two countries followed: “The system of open global trade that, while not perfect, has helped to deliver prosperity for Canadians for decades, is changing. Canada’s relationships with partners are also changing,” the King said. The speech underscored the need for the country to reinforce its established trading relationships, notably with European allies. During the recent election campaign, Carney repeatedly said the country was at a pivotal moment in its history. The speech Tuesday emphasised that, “this moment is also an incredible opportunity”. “An opportunity to think big and to act *******. An opportunity for Canada to embark on the largest transformation of its economy since the Second World War.” Plans for the trade war and economic growth King Charles also focused directly on domestic policy and plans set out by Carney’s Liberals to address the country’s economic headwinds. There was a commitment to speed up major national infrastructure projects and to double a loan programme that would enable more indigenous ownership of major projects. The government also said it would introduce legislation by 1 July to remove federal barriers to internal trade within the country. According to the government, interprovincial trade and labour mobility barriers cost the country as much as C$200bn each year. Reuters Tackling housing, affordability and crime Canada faces housing affordability crises as housing prices have skyrocketed across the country in the last decade. Alongside the US-Canada relationship, it was one of the top issues on the campaign trail. Carney’s Liberals promised to double the rate of building to 500,000 new homes a year. The speech underscored the government’s other plans to address the issue, including investing in prefabricated and modular housing, and cutting municipal development charges in half for housing with multiple units. There was a pledge to deliver on another campaign promise – to end a goods and services tax for first-time homebuyers on houses costing less than C$1m. The King highlighted other plans to drive down costs for Canadians, including a tax cut for the lower middle-class. Another major issue during the campaign was crime. The speech contained promises to address tougher penalties for car thefts, home invasions, human trafficking and drug smuggling. A boost to defence and border spending Canada has been under mounting pressure from the US and other Nato partners to increase its military spending, as it continues to fall short of the 2% of GDP on military spending target set out for alliance members. Carney has committed to hitting that benchmark by 2030. Tuesday’s speech contained commitments to “rebuilding, rearming, and reinvesting” in its military; reinforcing defence relationships with European allies, including by joining Rearm Europe, a plan to dramatically increase defence spending on the continent; and to strengthen Canada’s Artic presence. Last week, Carney also said that “high level” talks are taking place with the US about joining its proposed “Golden Dome” missile defence system, aimed at countering futuristic threats. 3. Trump wants to block funding for California over trans athlete participation Trump wants to block funding for California over trans athlete participation President Trump is pressuring California officials to prevent a transgender student from competing in the girls’ state track and field finals there, threatening to withhold funding if they don’t comply. Without naming the student, Mr. Trump took to Truth Social on Tuesday, advising that federal funding “will be held back, maybe permanently,” if state and local authorities don’t do as he says. The president signed an executive order in February banning transgender girls and women from competing on sports teams that match their gender identity, and stating that it’s the policy of the U.S. to “rescind all funds from educational programs that deprive women and girls of fair athletic opportunities.” Mr. Trump said he’ll be speaking with California Gov. Gavin Newsom about the situation soon, although it’s unclear if they have a call scheduled. “California, under the leadership of Radical Left Democrat Gavin Newscum, continues to ILLEGALLY allow ‘MEN TO PLAY IN WOMEN’S SPORTS,'” the president wrote on social media, adding that California is allowing a trans student to compete. “THIS IS NOT FAIR, AND TOTALLY DEMEANING TO WOMEN AND GIRLS,” Mr. Trump continued. “Please be hereby advised that large scale Federal Funding will be held back, maybe permanently, if the Executive Order on this subject matter is not adhered to. The Governor, himself, said it is ‘UNFAIR.’ I will speak to him today to find out which way he wants to go??? In the meantime I am ordering local authorities, if necessary, to not allow the transitioned person to compete in the State Finals. This is a totally ridiculous situation!!!” The White House did not immediately respond with further details about the student or the president’s intention to speak with Newsom. AB Hernandez, a high school junior track and field athlete at Jurupa Valley High School, has received significant national attention after winning the long jump and triple jump at the CIF Southern Section Division III finals earlier this month, according to the posted results. Hernandez’s participation has been met with backlash from conservative groups who say the high school junior shouldn’t be competing on the girls’ team. “As previously stated, JUSD is required to follow both California law and CIF policy regarding school athletics,” Jurupa Unified School District said in a statement provided to CBS News. “Both state law and CIF policy currently require that students be permitted to participate in athletic teams and competitions consistent with their gender identity, irrespective of the gender listed on the pupil’s records. We remain committed to following the law as written and ensuring that all students are granted the rights afforded to them in a safe and welcoming environment.” Keeping “men out of women’s sports” was a frequent refrain for Mr. Trump on the campaign trail, something he’s trying to follow through on in office. Last month, the Justice Department filed a civil lawsuit against Maine’s Department of Education for “discriminating against women by failing to protect women in women’s sports” in what Attorney General Pam Bondi alleged is a violation of Title IX. Bondi said when the lawsuit was filed that more suits against other states could come. Kathryn Watson Kathryn Watson is a politics reporter for CBS News Digital, based in Washington, D.C. GNWFL round five wrap: Brigades and Rovers headline round five in a three-point thriller GNWFL round five wrap: Brigades and Rovers headline round five in a three-point thriller Brigades edged out Rovers in a three-point thriller, chalking up back-to-back GNWFL wins as the headline match of round five at Greenough Oval on Saturday. The tight contest went down to the wire with the Hawks winning 4.7 (31) to the Demons 4.4 (28). Maddy Graham starred for the Hawks with three goals while Liberty Graham was named best on ground with one goal to her name in the Brigades’ win. Rovers’ Davina Whitney was judged best while her teammates Ella Ricetti, Dainira Papertalk, Mia Allen and Sharntay Westberg were also prominent. Brigades got off to a flyer in their first quarter with two goals from Graham, getting the Hawks out to a quick lead while Rovers managed only one behind by quarter time. The Dees were quick to the contest in the first quarter with Westberg booting a major, setting the tone for Rovers getting their day up and running. Rovers managed another early goal in the second term before Brigades snatched two goals of their own. Brigades went goalless for the rest of the game, failing to convert in front of the big sticks. Rovers managed to land a major midway through the third quarter, finding themselves down by nine points entering the final term. Another goal by Rovers in the fourth quarter saw them come within three points of the visitors but the Hawks were able to hold off the fighting Dees as Brigades claimed a narrow victory in a low-scoring affair at Greenough Oval. Rovers now gear up to face Towns in round six while Brigades shift their focus to their upcoming game against Chapman Valley at Mazzuchelli Oval this weekend. The other game in round five of the GNWFL was between Towns and Railways, which saw the undefeated Bulldogs come away with a big win. 13. Forget What You Know, Nightreign’s Gameplay and Combat Flip Elden Ring on Its Head Forget What You Know, Nightreign’s Gameplay and Combat Flip Elden Ring on Its Head Remember Elden Ring’s slower gameplay, fall damage, harder-than-steel bosses, and restrictive mobility? Forget all of those elements while playing Elden Ring Nightreign, except the difficult bosses, as it accelerates the gameplay mechanics for a more freeing and chaotic multiplayer experience. This game is Elden Ring on crack as it not only builds upon it but also amplifies some of the core elements introduced in the preceding title. Think Elden Ring taking a page out of Sekiro in mobility, and you get Nightreign. Deviating from your usual Soulsborne formula has never been more fun. The flow of the battle speeds up in Elden Ring Nightreign In an interview with IGN, Elden Ring Nightreign’s game and combat designer, Takuya Miyazawa, explained how they kept the core of Elden Ring intact while making changes to the gameplay to make for a faster and smoother multiplayer experience. So, the changes for the design of Nightreign… Well first, let me give a little introduction to the general design of Nightreign itself. So, as you know, it uses Elden Ring as a base for the design, so the world and a lot of the assets and the base combat flow comes from Elden Ring. But while it does use it as a base for enemies and such, one area that we wanted to focus on with Nightreign was how we encounter these enemies, the flow of the battle, and the abilities you can use. He further expanded on Elden Ring’s slower gameplay and how it wouldn’t fit the experience that they’re aiming to create, hence, resulting in structural limitations and constraints. So there are some constraints here. For example, the three-day, three-night time aspect, and the limitations on the player; but at the same time while we’re putting these limitations on the player in terms of structure, we wanted to allow them some freedom points that they didn’t otherwise have with Elden Ring. Miyazawa did expound on the freedom in Nightreign’s gameplay, detailing how it’s far more freeing than Elden Ring and the mechanics are a lot more varied in comparison when it comes to movement. So the way they traverse the map, they can sprint and they can clamber up walls quickly. Let’s see… there’s no fall damage compared to Elden Ring. So while we put these constraints on the players from a structural point of view, we wanted to open up and allow them this freedom from a gameplay point of view as well. So it was about creating that balance and that contrast. Having no fall damage in a Soulsborne title is rather unbelievable, but it fits the kind of experience that Nightreign is going for. Plus, new mechanics such as wall-climbing, sprinting, and vaulting, balance out limitations like the three-day timeframe, death penalty, and more. Now, all it needs is crossplay. Speaking of the death penalty, Nightreign isn’t holding back on punishments Your legs cannot save you in Elden Ring Nighreign! | Image Credit: FromSoftware Faster movement doesn’t mean you can outrun death in Nightreign, as it doubles down on the death penalty set in stone in Elden Ring. Dying in the previous game simply meant losing all your runes, with an option to retrieve them later. While that still exists in Nightreign, an extra layer of punishment has been added as you lose one level every time you die until you reach level 1. To make things worse, enemies near your lost runes can snag them and run away if you don’t get to them in time. It might be the most punishing death penalty in Soulsborne history, but when you take into account all the changes in Nightreign, it makes for an exciting shakeup to FromSoftware’s traditional Souls formula. Only a few days left for Nightfarers to join in on the chaos. Elden Ring Nightreign arrives on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC on May 30, 2025. Manjimup great-grandmother Doreen Waideman continues tennis tradition despite moving into Manjimup great-grandmother Doreen Waideman continues tennis tradition despite moving into A Manjimup great-grandmother has continued her tradition of a weekly tennis hit-out with friends, despite moving into BaptistCare Moonya Residential Care two years ago. Doreen Waideman, who is 85 years old, plays the game with friends Kaye Edwards, 85, Helen Court, 79, and Karen Church, 76, every Tuesday. The quartet take to the court at Edwards’ home for a two-and-a-half hour hit-out. Waideman said playing tennis helped her maintain an active lifestyle and stay connected to her friends. “Not only does tennis keep me fit, but it’s a lot of fun,” she said. “It’s a great hobby and one that I am glad I can still share with Helen, Kaye and Karen.” BaptistCare lifestyle coordinator Danni Roberts said Waideman was “a great example of doing what you love regardless of your age.” Source link #Manjimup #greatgrandmother #Doreen #Waideman #continues #tennis #tradition #moving Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  17. Nintendo 64 Games Get Rewind, CRT Filter On Switch 2 Nintendo 64 Games Get Rewind, CRT Filter On Switch 2 The Nintendo Switch 2 launches next week, and in addition to its launch line-up, which includes brand new games like Mario Kart World, the console will get access to GameCube games through Nintendo Switch Online. However, today we learned that the Switch 2 will also get new quality-of-life features for Nintendo 64 games through NSO, making it easier than ever to play them. When playing N64 games on the Switch 2, players will now be able to rewind their gameplay at the press of a button, potentially succeeding on missed jumps or other reflex-intensive tasks. In the example video, a player is able to redo a jump on the ice slide in Super Mario 64. The footage shows the ability to rewind a few seconds, but the UI indicates you’ll be able to go back farther than that, though the maximum length is unclear. The Switch 2 will also have an option for a CRT filter, recreating the retro vibe of an older TV by running lines across the screen to smooth out otherwise jagged polygons. This is a fairly common option in collections of older games, so it’s nice to see it appear here as well. Finally, players can now also change the controls of an N64 game in the pause menu, either remapping buttons to other, more comfortable spots on the controller, or assigning functions to buttons that didn’t exist at the time, like mapping shortcuts to the ZL button or the d-pad. It also looks like you can adjust the inputs on the joysticks, potentially inverting the camera in games where it normally isn’t possible. The news was announced through the Nintendo Today app, the company’s new go-to platform for major announcements. While Nintendo 64 games are playable on the original Nintendo Switch through NSO, only the button remapping feature will be available on the console. The CRT filter and the Rewind function are exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. All three features will be available when the Switch 2 launches on June 5. 18. 3 ancient tombs of prominent statesmen discovered in Egypt 3 ancient tombs of prominent statesmen discovered in Egypt Archaeologists in Egypt have unveiled the millennia-old tombs of three senior statesmen, identified by inscriptions left on the tombs. The three sites in the city of Luxor date to the New Kingdom era, Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said on social media, which ranged from about 1550 to 1070 B.C. One of the tombs is for a person called “Amon-am-Ebt,” who worked in a temple or other sacred site. The tomb has a view of sacrificial items and other relics, the ministry said. The tomb includes a small courtyard, an entrance, and a square hall. That site was later reused, and another hall was built, the ministry said. Another tomb is for a person called “Baki,” who was a supervisor at a nearby monastery. The tomb included multiple courtyards and an exhibition hall. The third tomb, which included a small courtyard and its own exhibition hall, was for a person identified as “S,” who worked as an overseer at a nearby temple, and was also a mayor and writer, the ministry said. An image in one of the tombs. / Credit: Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities Further research will be done to learn more about the tombs, their occupants and their construction, the ministry said. The tombs were found in the Dra Abu al-Naga necropolis in Luxor. In late 2024, Egyptian officials announced the discovery of an ancient tomb with 11 sealed coffins, and a trove of jewelry, near Luxor. The site was likely a family tomb, CBS News previously reported. In 2023, researchers found what is believed to be the first burial site in the city. Overall, more than a thousand burial sites have been found in Luxor, Fathy Yaseen, director general of antiquities of Upper Egypt, told CBS News in 2023. 19. Expedition 33 Director Reveals the Key to Game Development Success Expedition 33 Director Reveals the Key to Game Development Success Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is easily the biggest surprise hit of this year, and it deserves every bit of success. Not only did Expedition 33 sell two million copies in just 12 days, but the game is also the highest-rated game of the year so far in terms of Metacritic score. But how did a debut title from a small and relatively unknown studio manage to outshine everything else? According to game director Guillaume Broche, the answer is refreshingly simple: make the game you want to play. If the game wins Game of the Year, we will eagerly await a speed similar to the one Swen Vincke made. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 succeeded because the developers had this mindset In a recent interview with Pirate Software, Broche shared the creative decisions and motivations behind Sandfall Interactive’s breakout RPG. He acknowledges the role of luck in the game’s success, saying, “I consider myself really, really, really lucky in how all the stars aligned.” But still, Broche believes that genuine passion and honesty are what’s most important. I think that’s the most important thing when you start the game, and I see it sometimes with new devs, and I don’t agree with that, is that you don’t have to make a game that you think people will like. That creative honesty was a big part of how the team at Sandfall Interactive operated. Rather than following a typical corporate structure, the studio allowed and encouraged spontaneous creativity. Broche recalled how the team regularly brainstormed “stupid ideas” during lunch breaks, with no fear of sounding absurd. “It sounds silly,” Broche admitted, “but if it’s fun, we put it in.” He believes honesty in creative decisions is what truly sets a game apart. “If it talks deeply to a player, it will never fail,” he stated. This is the kind of idea that led to the addition of the character Fracois, a literal rock whose only attack is called the World’s Strongest Ice Attack. Twelve days in, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has crossed two million copies sold. We’ve watched in awe as so many of you began your journey. Feeling every step, every emotion, every revelation alongside you. To those just joining us: welcome. Tomorrow comes. pic.twitter.com/WIykZa2kj7 — Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (@expedition33) May 6, 2025 This freedom to experiment and the openness to ideas from all team members helped define the quirky, heartfelt tone of Expedition 33. “We leave enough creativity for everyone to just put their own soul in the game,” he explained. “But also… We know where we want to go.” The rest of the industry needs to catch up It’s time to make games for gamers, not for money. | Image Credit: Sandfall Interactive Sandfall Interactive didn’t stop at the development aspect of the game to make smart decisions. Expedition 33 launched with a modest $50 price tag, well below the industry’s increasingly standard $70 or even $80 range. Despite competing with the surprise launch of Oblivion Remastered, the game did immensely well, and that speaks to the genius of it. Expedition 33’s success also shows the power of word-of-mouth in the gaming community. Sandfall isn’t a known developer, and we had no idea whether Expedition 33 would be any good. But players made it their job to make sure the world knows. And it pushed Expedition 33 into the spotlight, setting it up as a Game of the Year contender. With Grand Theft Auto 6 now booted out of 2025, The Game Awards got a lot more interesting. Expedition 33 might just be the game to claim the crown. But beyond awards and sales, the development of Expedition 33 and these words from the developer are a timeless lesson for developers. Don’t chase trends, chase what inspires you. 21. NI Liverpool fan ‘very lucky’ to be alive after being hit by car at parade NI Liverpool fan ‘very lucky’ to be alive after being hit by car at parade BBC Jack and Abbie travelled to the victory parade with friends from Northern Ireland A man from Northern Ireland who was struck by a car at the Liverpool Football Club victory parade has said he feels “very lucky” to be alive. Jack Trotter, from Newtownards, County Down, and his girlfriend Abbie Gallagher were hit by the car as it drove into fans on Water Street, in Liverpool. It happened at about 18:00 BST on Monday as thousands of Liverpool FC fans gathered in the city centre for the Premier League victory parade. “The first thought that I got was: ‘Where’s Abbie? I need to find Abbie. Where’s Abbie?’ You know she could be anywhere at this rate and lucky enough she was screaming my name and I found her,” Mr Trotter told the BBC. Mr Trotter was taken to hospital by ambulance and kept in overnight. He has sustained injuries to his back and leg and is now walking with crutches. He says he is grateful that he is “still here” after the incident and thankful for the people who helped and have supported him. Mr Trotter described the day, up until the incident, as “outstanding”. “It was just packed – Liverpool fans just singing from nine o’clock when we got the train right until obviously the accident happened,” he told the BBC. “With what happened, I’ve never went from euphoria to zero real, real quick, if that makes sense.” He added that when he was hit he “didn’t actually feel initial pain” due to the adrenaline. “And then just as soon as that sort of wore off I realised: ‘OK, there’s something wrong here’, the pain started settling in and then I couldn’t walk.” PA Media Jack Trotter says he is in “agony” Ms Gallagher told the BBC that the couple had had a brilliant day, celebrating Liverpool’s Premier League win. “Then to see a car coming towards you I just was screaming, you don’t know what to think, what to do,” she said. “And all I remember is the car being there. “I was towards the driver’s side and Jack was on the passenger side when the car was coming at us. “I put my hands on the bonnet to save myself and I shoved myself off the car. “I just remember going: ‘Where is Jack?’ and I was screaming, hysterically crying and all I hear is: ‘I’m here, I’m here’. “It was a good five minutes later until I found Jack, and I just saw him and we hugged each other.” ‘Keep your loved ones close’ Ms Gallagher said Mr Trotter then fell against a wall and began crying, saying that his back and leg were in pain, but luckily someone was close-by to help. Seeing her partner in so much pain, and in the absence of her family, Ms Trotter said she needed the emergency services to tell her that “everything was going to be OK”. “Keep your loved ones close, that’s the main thing,” she said. “Honestly, you just have to be grateful so you do and realise that it can all be taken away from you so quickly.” Source link #Liverpool #fan #lucky #alive #hit #car #parade Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  23. These strong stocks are under-owned and have momentum, Bank of America says These strong stocks are under-owned and have momentum, Bank of America says Charter Communications and Toast are among a handful of overlooked stocks in the market that could see gains ahead, according to Bank of America. Stocks have been ripping higher as President Donald Trump reverses or delays many tariffs laid out in early April. The S & P 500 has surged more than 20% since hitting an intraday low on April 7. Traders continue to hunt for good bargains, however, as volatility persists amid on ongoing policy changes. In a recent note to clients, Bank of America highlighted stocks that are under-owned by funds and have catalysts for upward momentum. Specifically, the firm screened for stocks that meet three criteria: Low fund ownership Funds that do own the stock have an overweight allocation relative to their benchmark Have a high “triple momentum rank”: This metric combines earnings, price, and news momentum to determine when a stock is in vogue or not “Our analysis shows that stocks that have high ownership and are overweight can outperform for years if a stock’s fundamentals remain relatively attractive. Therefore, we believe the challenge for investors is to differentiate between crowded trades with a positive catalyst and crowded trades with a negative catalyst,” analyst Nigel Tupper said in a note to clients, outlining his methodology for the stock screen. “Similarly, there is an opportunity to identify under-owned stocks which have a positive catalyst,” he added. Take a look below for the group of U.S.-listed companies that made the screen, which uses data as of April 30. Charter Communications has low fund ownership of 17%, while having one of the higher “triple momentum” ranks at 93. Shares of the telecommunications giant, which owns Spectrum, have jumped 20% this year. Charter on May 16 announced an agreement to merge with privately held rival Cox Communications in a deal worth $21.9 billion — one of the biggest global deal transactions this year that combines two of the largest U.S. cable and broadband operators. Other stocks on the list outperforming the broader market include Howmet Aerospace and Toast . Howmet, which supplies parts for planes built by Boeing, has been on a monster run over the past year, gaining roughly 54% year to date and hitting a new 52-week high on Tuesday. Howmet has benefited from growth in the defense and commercial aerospace market and boasted strong first-quarter earnings results posted earlier this month. According to Bank of America’s screener, however, the company has just 23% fund ownership. Shares of Toast are similarly overlooked with 18% fund ownership, according to the screener. The stock has rallied 18% this year.
