Eric Schmidt Says He Often Meets People Who Can’t Tell Apart The Real World From The Online One, Now The Ex-Google Boss Is Warning AI Will Only Make It Worse Eric Schmidt Says He Often Meets People Who Can’t Tell Apart The Real World From The Online One, Now The Ex-Google Boss Is Warning AI Will Only Make It Worse Former Google chief executive Eric Schmidt told a Faena Forum audience that artificial intelligence will “exacerbate” people’s tendency to confuse life online with life offline, a problem he said the late Henry Kissinger had anticipated years ago. What Happened: Sitting beside journalist Sean McManus at the Faena Forum, Schmidt recalled Kissinger’s lifelong interest in how humans construct reality and warned that generative AI is “going to be exacerbated … to a level that’s hard for all of us to understand.” “I meet all sorts of people who seem to be confused between the difference between the online world and the real world,” he said, predicting the gulf will widen as large models tailor hyper-personalised content. Trending: Maker of the $60,000 foldable home has 3 factory buildings, 600+ houses built, and big plans to solve housing — this is your last chance to become an investor for $0.80 per share. Schmidt traced the conversation back to a 2010s Bilderberg meeting where he first engaged Kissinger on algorithmic power— an exchange the strategist later called a “new definition of reality.” Kissinger, then 95, pressed Schmidt to co-author The Age of AI and its sequel Genesis, finishing edits a week before his death. Schmidt has long warned policymakers of the “existential risk” AI may pose to the masses and has also expressed concerns over the U.S. government’s potential pursuit of artificial general intelligence (AGI). See Also: The team behind $6B+ in licensing deals is now building the next billion-dollar IP empire — invest early at $2.25/share. Why It Matters: OpenAI boss Sam Altman has likewise cautioned that the scale of the coming AI wave is “beyond what we can wrap our heads around,” urging “humility and caution.” Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) Sundar Pichai has also emphasized the need for an open mind and acknowledged the weight of technology like AI, which can progress rapidly and potentially cause large-scale societal disruptions. Jack Dorsey and Elon Musk have gone further, warning that deepfakes are nudging society toward a “simulated future” where citizens struggle to prove anything is real. Bug Divers Branded Traitors for Not Defending Super Earth
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Bug Divers Branded Traitors for Not Defending Super Earth Bug Divers Branded Traitors for Not Defending Super Earth The Helldivers 2 community is no stranger to unwavering dedication. But even among the most loyal defenders of Super Earth, there’s a unique breed: the Bug Divers. These players are laser-focused on one goal: wiping out the Terminid threat. To them, nothing else matters. Illuminate? Automatons? Major Orders? Irrelevant. If it doesn’t crawl, swarm, or explode in a gooey mess, they’re not interested. Their commitment is so absolute that it borders on fanatical, and while their efforts have pushed back the bug menace in countless campaigns, that single-mindedness is now causing friction. Major Order is on the brink in Helldivers 2, and the Bug Divers are to blame A recent Major Order tasked all Helldivers with pushing back the Illuminate from the Super Earth itself, and for days, progress was steady, until it wasn’t. While the Super Earth is not lost, the order has failed by a small margin of 2%. The community isn’t just disappointed; they’re furious. The blame? It’s falling squarely on the Bug Divers, those die-hard exterminators who care about nothing except wiping out every last Terminid. While the rest of the community is off invading Illuminate to secure Super Earth, the Bug Divers are still down in the trenches, gleefully farming bugs like it’s their only purpose. And honestly, for them, it is. They’re not interested in the Major Orders, they don’t care about other alien factions, and they certainly don’t seem to care about missions right now. For some players, this isn’t about passion anymore; it’s about disobedience. And when Super Earth’s commands are on the line, that’s a serious offense. Players have had enough, and in true Helldivers 2 fashion, they’re fighting back the only way they know how: memes. Comment byu/geeyerselashak from discussion inhelldivers2 Comment byu/geeyerselashak from discussion inhelldivers2 Everywhere you look, Bug Divers are getting roasted, called traitors, and memed into oblivion. It’s all fun and games until Super Earth actually falls because someone couldn’t stop farming bugs. Repetitive missions or democratic duty? A call for balance Who knew democracy could fall because someone wanted more gooey bug explosions? | Image Credit: Arrowhead To be fair to the Bug Divers, some of the frustration isn’t entirely misplaced. The recent mission rotations have been heavily Illuminate-focused. While Arrowhead’s plan to make Illuminate the center of the current galactic war arc makes sense, many players feel the mission pool has become stale. The same objectives, the same enemies, the same glowing death beams, it’s starting to wear thin. Some Divers have even taken “breaks” by heading off to fight Automatons or bugs just for a change of pace. And honestly, who can blame them? But still, as defenders of Super Earth and its elite soldiers, there’s an expectation to maintain: when a Major Order is active, everyone contributes. Even if the missions are repetitive, democracy doesn’t wait for variety; it demands results. It doesn’t matter if you’re killing bugs, bots, or energy phantoms; the mission comes first. Hopefully, Arrowhead realizes this soon and starts spicing things up with more enemy variants or unique objectives, but until then, the duty stands. For now, Helldivers are reminded of a hard truth: you don’t have to enjoy every mission, but you have to finish the fight. A market options hedge as other risks lurking out there despite Tuesday’s rally A market options hedge as other risks lurking out there despite Tuesday’s rally Bond yields provide critical insights into economic expectations, inflation, and currency valuation. Higher bond yields, especially on government bonds, can signal expectations of stronger economic growth. Lower yields suggest economic slowdown or recession fears, as investors flock to safe assets, driving bond prices up and yields down. Higher economic growth is good, but higher inflation is not, and yields also incorporate inflation forecasts. Higher yields may also indicate rising inflation expectations, as investors demand compensation for eroding purchasing power. In theory, investors can distinguish whether yields are increasing due to better economic expectations or worse inflation expectations by observing the spread between nominal yields and inflation-protected securities (TIPS), which reflects breakeven inflation rates, or at least inflation as measured by CPI-U . Consumers generally favor a stronger currency, which increases their purchasing power of imported goods. Domestic producers and exporters favor a weaker currency, whose goods will be more competitive. Higher domestic yields, all else equal, elevate the local currency’s value. ‘Carry trade’ risk For instance, if U.S. 10-year yields rise relative to ******* bunds or Japanese bonds, the dollar may strengthen against the euro or yen. Lower yields reduce a currency’s appeal, potentially weakening it against other currencies, especially if other central banks offer higher rates. These yield differentials are key drivers in carry trades. A narrowing yield differential between U.S. and foreign bonds often pressures the dollar, and potentially other dollar-denominated risk assets. In early 2024, the spread between Japanese and U.S. Treasury rates began to narrow, falling by ~130 basis points from more than 4% to less than 2.8%. (1 basis point equals 0.01%.) This prompted concerns about substantial deleveraging as investors worried about an unwinding of the yen carry trade. A drop in U.S. rates propelled that swing, but Japanese government bond yields have recently risen sharply. This is problematic because it might pressure the carry trade if Japanese rates rise more quickly than US rates, and the amounts involved are substantial. Japan is even more indebted than the U.S. due to the size of its economy, roughly 250% of Japan’s GDP, with total government debt of approximately $8 trillion. If the spread does not compress, then that suggests U.S. Treasury rates would also rise, which could pressure other risk assets. If Japanese rates continue to increase, this presents a global risk. The S & P 500 has clawed back more than 70% of its peak-to-trough losses from the all-time highs in February, and the Cboe Volatility Index (VIX) , although elevated, is well off the April peak. For these reasons, I think re-initiating hedges might be advisable. For example, a June 30th (month-ending) SPDR S & P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) 575/525 put spread ($50 wide) cost ~ $8.90 per contract or just over 1.5% of the current share price of the ETF, and less than 18% of the difference between the strikes, offering a payoff of better than 4.5:1. The trade: Buy SPY June 30 $575 put Sell SPY June 30 $525 put DISCLOSURES: (None) All opinions expressed by the CNBC Pro contributors are solely their opinions and do not reflect the opinions of CNBC, NBC UNIVERSAL, their parent company or affiliates, and may have been previously disseminated by them on television, radio, internet or another medium. Maryland Democrat says he was denied access to Abrego Garcia in El Salvador Maryland Democrat says he was denied access to Abrego Garcia in El Salvador WASHINGTON – Maryland Democrat Rep. Glenn Ivey said he was denied access to meet with Kilmar Abrego Garcia during a recent trip to El Salvador. Abrego Garcia, a union sheet metal worker and father of three from Maryland, was wrongly deported to the Central American country in March. He was taken to the notorious Terrorism Confinement Center, or CECOT, before being transferred to a facility with better conditions in April. Ivey, who flew to El Salvador on May 23, told WJZ-TV in an interview that the U.S. ambassador to El Salvador had informed the Salvadoran government of his visit, but he was denied access to see Abrego Garcia. In April, Sen. Chris Van Hollen, also a Maryland Democrat, traveled to El Salvador and met with Abrego Garcia. And four House Democrats took a trip in April to El Salvador and were briefed by the U.S. embassy on his case. ‘We have a right to do this’ In a video clip shared on X on May 27, Ivey said he was told he needed a permit. “They knew we were coming, they knew why we were coming, and they know we have the right to do this. So, they need to just cut the crap, let us get in there and have a chance to see him and talk with him,” Ivey said. Sep 26, 2024; Washington, DC, USA; Rep. Glenn Ivey, D-Md. speaks during a congressional task force hearing on the assassination attempt of former President Donald J. Trump in Butler, Pa. on July 13, 2024.. Mandatory Credit: Jack Gruber/USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images In response to Ivey’s post, the Department of Homeland Security posted, “While the mainstream media and politicians are fighting to bring a foreign terrorist and gang member back to U.S. soil, @POTUS Trump and @Sec_Noem are fighting for the victims of alien crime and putting the safety of Americans FIRST.” The Trump administration insists Abrego Garcia is a member of the MS-13 gang, but a federal judge has questioned the strength of the government’s evidence. Abrego Garcia denies being a gang member and has no criminal convictions. The Supreme Court ordered the Trump administration to “facilitate” the release of Abrego Garcia, but the Justice Department has argued it does not have the authority to return him to the United States because he is in a foreign country. U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis in Maryland said during a hearing on May 16 that the Justice Department had not made a “good faith” effort to comply with her request to provide information on what the government was doing to bring Abrego Garcia back to the United States. Art from global philosopher Sri Chinmoy aims to inspire peace in Manjimup Art from global philosopher Sri Chinmoy aims to inspire peace in Manjimup A global philosopher, musician and sportsman has turned his talents to the arts with a new exhibition in Manjimup showing off the works of spiritual Indian artist Sri Chinmoy. The Manjimup Art Gallery is hosting Art for Peace which features a sample of works by Chinmoy centred around birds. Curator Grahak Cunningham said the works have been shown to the United Nations, New York, Parliament House in Canberra and the JFK Airport. “He learnt to meditate for up to eight hours when he was still a child in India and he applied this skill when painting or drawing,” Mr Cunningham said. “A multicultural place like Manjimup, which has so much nature and beauty around it, is the perfect place to have an exhibit dedicated to peace. “Imbued with colour and a positive motif, the art aims to uplift the viewer. Hopefully people go away feeling more peaceful than when they came in.” The current exhibit is on loan as part of a collection of Chinmoy’s from New York where he resided until he died in 2007. Promoting world harmony, hope and friendship, Chinmoy’s art features his favourite motif — the “soul-bird”. “The bird knows no boundaries. It is a messenger of peace and freedom, born in the garden of the soul and taking flight in the heart,” the artist said. “If you do not find peace inside your own heart then you will not find it anywhere else on Earth.” His other distinct style of abstract work is also on display in Manjimup, which he called “Jharna-Kala” meaning fountain art. Chinmoy said he believed anyone had a creative capacity, ready to burst forth like a fountain. “A fountain is something that comes from within spontaneously, without any outer strain. It is something effortless, easy,” he said. Interspersed amongst the artwork are comments the exhibition has drawn from humanitarian leaders, including Nelson Mandela. “We are a single humanity. We must work together, united as one, to build a world of justice and harmony for all,” Mr Mandela said. “Within each of us lies the power to build a world where we respect each other’s beliefs, understand each other’s culture and support each other’s values. A world where hatred, pain and suffering have no place. “This is the great cause of world peace to which my dear friend Sri Chinmoy devoted his life and to which his paintings are dedicated.” The works are on display until June 21. A new Covid variant surging in Asia is now spreading across the US. Here’s where it is and what to know A new Covid variant surging in Asia is now spreading across the US. Here’s where it is and what to know The new Covid variant is continuing to proliferate around the U.S. — although you might not know it by just checking federal variant-tracking dashboards. Known as NB.1.8.1, the omicron variant has been tracked in states across the country following a large surge in China. Although, right now, LP.8.1 — a descendent of JN.1 — is the nation’s dominant strain. “CDC is aware of reported cases of COVID-19 NB.1.8.1 in China and is in regular contact with international partners,” a spokesperson for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told CBS News last week. They reportedly noted that too few U.S. sequences have been reported to be included in its dashboard. But, in Asia, it’s resulted in increased hospitalizations and emergency room visits. So, what should Americans know about NB.1.8.1, and how worrying is its spread? Here’s what to know. What and where is NB.1.8.1? NB.1.8.1 has been designated a SARS-CoV-2 variant under monitoring, with increasing proportions globally, according to the World Health Organization. There are currently six tracked by the agency. A new Covid variant that led to hospitalizations in Asia has a foothold in the U.S. It’s known as NB.1.8.1 (Getty Images) It’s spread throughout 22 countries. In the U.S., it has been traced to New York, California, Arizona, Ohio and Rhode Island, according to records from local health officials at the CDC’s airport testing partner Ginkgo Bioworks. While still low in numbers, the WHO noted that there had been a significant rise in its prevalence from late March to April. What do we know about related infections? The public health risk posed by this variant is evaluated as low at the global level. “Despite a concurrent increase in cases and hospitalizations in some countries where NB.1.8.1 is widespread, current data do not indicate that this variant leads to more severe illness than other variants in circulation,” the WHO said. But, while it may not be particularly severe, may infect people more easily than previous variants. There is some evidence that the variant binds more tightly to human cells. “Data indicates that NB.1.8.1 does not lead to more severe illness compared to previous variants, although it appears to have a growth advantage, suggesting it may spread more easily,” Subhash Verma, a professor of microbiology and immunology at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, told CBS News this week. “In other words, it is more transmissible.” The Food and Drug Administration recently said that it would shift to narrow approval for updated Covid vaccines. Currently-approved shots are expected to remain effective against the NB.1.8.1 variant (Getty Images) Do the Covid vaccines work against NB.1.8.1? Yes, our currently-approved Covid shots are expected to remain effective against this variant and protect against severe disease. However, access to the vaccines is being limited by the Trump administration. On Tuesday, health officials said the Covid vaccine for healthy children and pregnant women had been removed from the CDC’s recommended immunization schedule. The Food and Drug Administration said last week that it will continue to approve updates for seniors and Americans with underlying medication conditions. However, it will require vaccine makers to conduct major new clinical trials before approving them for wider use. Although the number of Covid-related hospitalizations and deaths has fallen considerably since the pandemic’s start, experts worry about what limiting access to vaccines could do. “Is the pharmacist going to determine if you’re in a high-risk group?” Dr. Paul Offit, a vaccine expert at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, told The Associated Press. “The only thing that can come of this will make vaccines less insurable and less available.” For now, people can still get the shots. Southern Forrest farmers invited to new series of networking events which aim to strengthen the community Southern Forrest farmers invited to new series of networking events which aim to strengthen the community Farmers in the Southern Forest’s will be able to attend a new series of networking events which aim to strengthen the farming community through knowledge-sharing, innovation and a touch of humour. The Southern Forests Food Council have announced the next chapter of its Farmer Resilience Networking Series — a program backed by the Synergy Community Giving Fund and the Department of Primary Industry and Regional Development. A lineup of events will be on offer which feature international leaders in farm nutrition, local agriculture champions, hands-on tech demonstrations, and even some of Australia’s top comedians. The events will equip farmers with practical tools and new ideas to tackle real-world challenges such as water security, soil health, climate resilience, mental well-being and carbon management. SFFC executive chair Arthur Wilson said farmers were the “backbone” on the Warren-Blackwood region. “This initiative is about more than just farming techniques — it’s about supporting the people who keep our food systems strong and helping them thrive in a world that’s rapidly changing. “We’re grateful to Synergy for recognising the importance of farmer well-being and resilience. It’s encouraging to see support from outside the industry to get behind initiatives that make a real difference,” Dr Wilson said. Dr Wilson said the SFFC had been working closely with it’s members to ensure the program addressed the evolving concerns of the community. “Grower outreach is critical,” he said. “We want to deliver information that’s not just relevant but meaningful — ensuring we’re addressing what matters most, rather than dictating what we think people need.” Upcoming events in the series include a carbon calculator pilot program running from June to August, a comedy night on July 4, a nutrient-dense food production workshop on September 22 and 23, and a DIY fertiliser and soil health workshop also in September. Trump administration halts scheduling of new student visa appointments Trump administration halts scheduling of new student visa appointments By Humeyra Pamuk WASHINGTON (Reuters) -President Donald Trump’s administration has ordered its missions abroad to stop scheduling new appointments for student and exchange visitor visa applicants as the State Department prepares to expand social media vetting of foreign students, according to an internal cable seen by Reuters on Tuesday. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in the cable that the department plans to issue updated guidance on social media vetting of student and exchange visitor applicants after a review is completed and advised consular sections to halt the scheduling of such visa appointments. The move comes as the Trump administration has sought to ramp up deportations and revoke student visas as part of its wide-ranging efforts to fulfill his hardline immigration agenda. In the cable, first reported by Politico, Rubio said appointments that have already been scheduled can proceed under the current guidelines, but available appointments not already taken should be pulled down. “The Department is conducting a review of existing operations and processes for screening and vetting of student and exchange visitor (F, M, J) visa applicants, and based on that review, plans to issue guidance on expanded social media vetting for all such applicants,” the cable said. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce declined to comment on reports of the cable, but said the U.S. will use “every tool” to vet anyone who wants to enter the United States. “We will continue to use every tool we can to assess who it is that’s coming here, whether they are students or otherwise,” Bruce told reporters at a regular news briefing. The expanded social media vetting will require consular sections to modify their operations, processes and allocation of resources, according to the cable, which advises the sections going forward to take into consideration the workload and resource requirements of each case before scheduling them. The cable also advises consular sections to remain focused on services for U.S. citizens, immigrant visas and fraud prevention. Trump administration officials have said student visa and green card holders are subject to deportation over their support for Palestinians and criticism of Israel’s conduct in the war in Gaza, calling their actions a threat to U.S. foreign policy and accusing them of being pro-******. Trump’s critics have called the effort an attack on free speech rights under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. A Tufts University student from Turkey was held for over six weeks in an immigration detention center in Louisiana after co-writing an opinion piece criticizing her school’s response to Israel’s war in Gaza. She was released from custody after a federal judge granted her bail. Last week, the Trump administration moved to revoke Harvard’s ability to enroll international students. Those roughly 6,800 students make up about 27% of Harvard’s total enrollment. The Republican president’s administration has moved to undermine the financial stability and global standing of the nation’s oldest and wealthiest university after it pushed back on government demands for vast changes to its policies. The Last Of Us Season 2 Steelbook Edition 4K Blu-Ray Is Up For Preorder The Last Of Us Season 2 Steelbook Edition 4K Blu-Ray Is Up For Preorder The second season of The Last of Us has just wrapped up on HBO Max, but if you know you’re going to want to watch it again, multiple physical editions are up for preorder right now, including a 4K Blu-ray with a limited-edition steelbook case. The Last of Us Season 2 releases on Blu-ray, 4K Blu-ray, and DVD on September 23. Retailers are still in the process of creating store pages, but you can preorder The Last of Us Season 2’s Limited Edition Steelbook for $47 at Walmart or $40 at Gruv. Amazon has yet to open preorders, but the retailer does have store pages for all four physical editions, so it should be available to purchase soon. $47 at Walmart / $40 at Gruv | Releases September 23 The Last of Us Season 2’s Limited Edition Steelbook features promotional photography of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) with Cordyceps ******* forming a moth–like Ellie’s tattoo–in the background. The interior artwork shows Ellie surrounded by a horde of people who have succumbed to the Cordyceps *******. Season 1 of The Last of Us didn’t receive a Steelbook Edition until March of this year, so it’s cool to see Season 2 will have one on launch day. The Last of Us Season 1’s Steelbook Edition has been going in and out of stock since its reveal, but Amazon currently has it available for $50. Season 2’s bonus features haven’t been revealed yet, but we’re hoping to see something similar to the Season 1 release, which includes featurettes on each episode as well as a disc filled with short documentaries and interviews. We do know that the 4K Blu-ray edition displays in native 4K (2160p) resolution and supports Dolby Vision and HDR10. The infected’s growls and the unsettling calling card of Clickers should sound pretty unnerving with Dolby Atmos audio and 7.1 lossless surround sound. 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD | Releases September 23 If you don’t care about steelbook cases, The Last of Us Season 2 will also be available in three standard edition formats. The 4K Blu-ray standard edition is up for preorder for $35, the 1080p Blu-ray is $30, and the DVD edition is $25. The Last of Us: Season Two Limited Edition Steelbook The Last of Us Season 2 continued HBO’s largely faithful adaptation of the Naughty Dog video game franchise. While Season 1 had nine episodes, Season 2 only had seven. The new season adapted a portion of The Last of Us Part II, though it was largely told from Ellie’s perspective. Season 3 is expected to flip the script and follow Abby, the other playable character from the second game. If you’re unfamiliar with the franchise, The Last of Us takes place in a post-apocalyptic United States that has been ravaged by a parasitic ******* that turned most of humanity into flesh-eating creatures. The first season followed hardened survivor Joel on his mission to smuggle 14-year-old Ellie out of a quarantined zone, as her blood holds the key to creating a cure to the Cordyceps infection. The second season is set five years later, and it largely examines the repercussions of Joel’s actions as his past catches up to him and Ellie. A new conflict erupts, with Ellie setting off on a quest for vengeance as she explores dangerous terrain inhabited by infected people, cults, and militias. Season 2 was largely told from Ellie’s perspective, but Season 3 is expected to flip the script and follow Abby, the other playable character from the second game. While the show’s overarching storyline has remained aligned with the games–some of the scenes are nearly identical–it has, at times, explored previously uncharted backstories and introduced new characters within self-contained episodes. The Last of Us Season 1 on Blu-ray Along with the aforementioned Limited Edition Steelbook, The Last of Us Season 1 is also available in standard edition 4K Blu-ray and 1080p Blu-ray formats. Over at Amazon, you can pick up the 4K Blu-ray for only $23 or the Blu-ray for $16. The Last of Us Season 1 Special Features As mentioned above, you’re also getting a solid selection of extra content here. Each of the nine episodes come with short documentaries, and some of the documentaries on the fourth include a look at how the video game was adapted for TV, profiles of the actors, and the connections between the video game source material and the TV show. Russia’s advance in Ukraine’s north east may be bid to create ‘buffer zone’ Russia’s advance in Ukraine’s north east may be bid to create ‘buffer zone’ Abdujalil Abdurasulov BBC News, Kyiv Emergency services of Sumy A Sumy region resident is evacuated from her village Russian forces are making gains in the Ukrainian north-eastern region of Sumy – a development that may be linked to Moscow’s attempts to create “buffer zones” along the border, Ukrainian regional authorities have said. The head of the Sumy region Oleh Hryhorov said Russian forces have seized four villages and that fighting is continuing near other settlements in the area “with the aim of setting up a so-called ‘buffer zone'”. Russia maintains it has captured six villages in Sumy so far. Last week, its leader Vladimir Putin announced a plan to create “security buffer zones” along the border. “Enemy firing points are being actively suppressed, the work is under way,” he said. The buffer zones would be created to provide “additional support” to areas in Russia which border Ukraine’s Kharkiv, Sumy and Chernihiv regions, Putin said. In a statement on Facebook on Monday, Sumy’s Hryhorov wrote: “The enemy is continuing attempts to advance with the aim of setting up a so-called ‘buffer zone’,” He added that the villages of Novenke, Basivka, Veselivka and Zhuravka – all in Sumy – had been occupied. Kyiv has not yet officially stated that Russian troops are in the Sumy region and, when contacted by the BBC, Hryhorov declined to confirm the information he shared on Monday, saying only the military could comment on front-line activities. . The General Staff’s daily briefings only mentioned clashes and other military activities in “the Kursk direction” – meaning towards the border with Russia – without naming any specific locations. The Ukrainian army’s group of forces that coordinate military activities in the region declined the BBC’s request for comment, indicating that information about the Russian advancement in the north is an extremely sensitive issue for Ukrainian authorities. However, in his address on Monday night Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned Russia’s “preparation for new offensives” – which was largely interpreted as a reference to the events in the Sumy region. Deep State map, a group that monitors the latest front-line developments in Ukraine, marked four Ukrainian villages as fully controlled by Russian forces even before Hyrhorov’s announcement. Deep State’s co-founder Roman Pohorily said that Russian troops have been pushing in those areas since March. Ukrainian military observer Kostyantyn Mashovets confirmed this, although he pointed out that Russia’s advance has been very slow – about 1km (0.6 miles) in the past two weeks. Mr Mashovets also said Moscow recently relocated new units from the Donbas – to Sumy region. Colonel Vadym Mysnyk, a spokesperson for a formation of the ground forces that is involved in defending the Sumy region, said Russian forces mostly use small groups on motorbikes and buggies during their attacks. The movement of larger armoured vehicles could be quickly spotted by drones and destroyed, Col Mysnyk explained. On the battlefield, speed and mobility are crucial. But the Sumy region has regularly come under attack by Russian air strikes and artillery fire, with the regional administration reporting that since Saturday, Russia has dropped more than 30 guided bombs on the area. One of the biggest attacks took place last month when ballistic missiles hit the city of Sumy killing 34 people. Several weeks later, drones hit an intercity bus killing nine people. Russia targets residential buildings, hospitals and civilian vehicles to spread panic among the population, Col Mysnyk claimed. Russia denies that it targets civilians in strikes, saying they are aimed at military targets. Local authorities say evacuation is taking place in 202 settlements close to the front line, which makes up a third of all territorial communities of the region. Serhiy Grabskiy, a retired colonel and a military expert, agreed that the advances in Sumy are part of Moscow’s plan to create a buffer zone. Grabskiy said Russia’s main strategic goal is to seize the Donbas region in the east, where the most intensive fighting is taking place. Considering the number of troops they have, Russia “cannot concentrate major forces to go deep in the north”, Grabskiy argued. He called the Sumy region a “zone of distraction” – as by maintaining pressure in the north, Russia forces Ukraine to spread its resources and weaken positions in key front-line areas. The US-based Institute for the Study of War think tank also reports that any success in Sumy could be used by Putin as a leverage and justification for new territorial demands as part of future peace negotiations. However, observers agree there is no immediate threat of a major breakthrough in the Sumy region. Based on the speed of their gains in the region so far, it is unlikely that in the near future Russian forces could capture a major city like Sumy, which had a population of 250,000 before the invasion. Mr Pohorily of Deep State said Ukrainian troops have managed to stabilise the front line. “It’s been almost three months since [Russia] started their operation in the Sumy region and yet, they are still at the border areas,” he said. Col Mysnyk claimed that Ukraine has built defence lines along the entire border since 2022 and at present they’re much better prepared to stop the Russian forces than they were at the start of the Russian invasion. But those measures may not last long if the Kremlin’s priorities change and Moscow sends greater forces to Sumy. Measles has exploded in Texas, but state could let more kids skip vaccines – National Measles has exploded in Texas, but state could let more kids skip vaccines – National Texas this year has been the center of the nation’s largest measles outbreak in more than two decades, as a mostly eradicated disease has sickened more than 700 in the state, sent dozens to hospitals and led to the death of two children who were unvaccinated. But even as the outbreak slows, a bill approved by state lawmakers and sent to Republican Gov. Greg Abbott would make it significantly easier for parents to enroll their children in school without standard vaccinations for diseases such as measles, whooping cough, polio and hepatitis A and B. Supporters say the bill streamlines an already legal exemption process that allows families to avoid vaccines for reasons of conscience, religious beliefs or medical reasons. It would let them download the required forms from a website instead of contacting state health officials and waiting for one to come in the mail. Story continues below advertisement The bill does not change which vaccines are required. However, critics say easing the exemption process opens a door to further outbreaks with potentially deadly results. “If this bill becomes law, Texas is likely to see more illness, more death and higher health care costs for families and business,” Rekha Lakshmanan, chief strategy officer for Texas-based nonprofit Immunization Project, told state senators before the bill won final approval. “The outbreak (in Texas) is not a coincidence. It is the canary in the coal mine screaming at the top of its lungs,” she said. The exemption bill — as well as other bills passed by the Texas House on lawsuits against vaccine makers and removing immunization restrictions on organ transplants — are a snapshot of efforts across dozens of conservative states to question vaccines or roll back requirements. 1:46 Measles cases continue to rise in Manitoba as outbreaks spread At the national level, this wave has been buoyed by still-lingering pushback from the COVID-19 pandemic and the Trump administration’s embrace of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who was one of the nation’s leading anti-vaccine advocates before being appointed secretary of the U.S. Health and Human Services Department. Story continues below advertisement The most recent federal data shows U.S. kindergarten vaccination rates have dipped since the pandemic — 92.7 per cent in the 2023-24 school year compared to 95 per cent before COVID-19 — and the proportion of children with exemptions rose to an all-time high. And last week, the “Make America Healthy Again” federal report on the nation’s health and wellness questioned the necessity of vaccine mandates for schoolkids. Get weekly health news Receive the latest medical news and health information delivered to you every Sunday. The national Association of Immunization Managers, an organization of state and local immunization officials, has been tracking nearly 600 vaccine-related bills across the country in 2025, and the majority would not be considered pro-vaccine, said Brent Ewig, the group’s the group’s chief policy officer. More on Health More videos “We saw a spike in vaccine-related bills during the pandemic. The last few years it had been tapering off. With recent actions at the federal level, there has been a spike again,” Ewig said. The Texas measles outbreak and vaccine requirements Measles has been considered eliminated from the United States since 2000. The Texas outbreak started in late January in West Texas’ Mennonite communities that have been resistant to vaccines and distrustful of government intervention, and the highly contagious virus quickly jumped to other places with low vaccination rates. Like many states, Texas requires children to obtain vaccines to protect against 11 diseases to attend public and private schools and child care centers. The state’s vaccination rates for the 2023-24 school year ranged between 93.78 per cent for chicken pox to 95.78 per cent for hepatitis B. Story continues below advertisement But parents can obtain exemptions for religious or personal reasons, or if a doctor determines it would not be safe because of a medical condition. Exemption rates in Texas have been rising for nearly two decades, with a dramatic spike over the last five years. According to the Texas Department of Health Services, the agency received exemption requests for nearly 153,000 students in the 2023-2024 fiscal year, up from 136,000 the previous year and nearly double the 77,000 requested in 2019. Trending Now Carney breaks with Trudeau question ******* tradition of answering all MPs The bond market is spooked. This is why you should care The bill on vaccine exemption paperwork would make it easier for parents to obtain the needed form by letting them download it to a computer or smartphone. The current system where parents ask state health officials to mail a paper copy to their home can sometimes take weeks. The form would still need to be notarized before it is turned in to a school and a student is enrolled. Story continues below advertisement Advocates say the changes would help parents thread the bureaucratic process and get their children enrolled in school quicker. “This bill is not about whether vaccines are good or bad, it’s about government efficiency and keeping kids in schools,” said Jackie Schlegal, founder of Texans for Medical Freedom, which advocates for “vaccine freedom of choice.” Critics argue that simplifying the exemption form process makes it too easy for unvaccinated kids to enroll in a school, endangering the health of other kids and families. 2:27 Health Matters: Ontario adds 173 new measles cases to growing outbreak “For years Texas has struck a delicate balance of parents’ right and public health and safety,” Lakshmanan said. “This bill is more than just a form … We can support parents without putting other families at risk.” Still waiting for a Senate vote is a bill that would allow vaccine makers who advertise in Texas to be sued if their vaccine causes a person to be injured. That bill has been opposed by the Texas Association of Manufacturers. Story continues below advertisement The author of that bill is first-term state Rep. Shelley Luther, who was briefly jailed in 2020 for opening her Dallas salon in violation of governor’s emergency order during the pandemic. Abbott quickly weakened his enforcement of coronavirus safeguards and a court ordered her released. © 2025 The ********* Press Source link #Measles #exploded #Texas #state #kids #skip #vaccines #National Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Canada’s Hudson’s Bay retail chain to terminate more than 8,300 workers by Sunday Canada’s Hudson’s Bay retail chain to terminate more than 8,300 workers by Sunday TORONTO (Reuters) -Canada’s Hudson’s Bay Company plans to lay off 8,347 employees, or 89% of its workforce, by Sunday when it will conclude its liquidation ***** and shut all stores, according to documents published late on Monday. Hudson’s Bay, Canada’s oldest retail chain, has been part of the country’s landscape and identity for 355 years, anchoring malls from coast to coast. Founded in 1670, the Bay’s brick-and-mortar department stores are following similar retail businesses struggling with declining foot traffic and competing with online commerce. The layoffs follow rising joblessness in Canada. Unemployment hit 6.9% in April, the highest since November, as U.S. tariffs hit the export-dependent economy. In March, Hudson’s Bay announced plans to undergo a full liquidation of its stores unless an alternative solution could be found, after initiating restructuring proceedings earlier in the month. Of the remaining 1,017 employees, 899 are expected to be cut around June 15 when distribution centres are anticipated to close. The last 118 employees will assist with winding up the company under Canada’s Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act. Prior to the liquidation, Hudson’s Bay employed 9,634 people in its 96 stores, four distribution centres and head office, according to the documents. In 2018, Sears Canada’s closing led to around 12,000 job losses at that retailer. Hudson’s Bay’s brand assets, including its nationally recognizable coat of arms and stripes were purchased by ********* Tire Corporation for $30 million, ********* Tire said this month. Mexico sees USMCA review starting in late September or early October Mexico sees USMCA review starting in late September or early October MEXICO CITY (Reuters) -Mexico expects a planned review of the trilateral trade pact with the U.S. and Canada to formally begin at the beginning of the fourth quarter this year, Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard said on Tuesday. “The formal start is expected at the end of September, the first week of October, for evaluation,” Ebrard told journalists on the sidelines of a banking event. The USMCA, which replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement in 2020 and was negotiated during U.S. President Donald Trump‘s first term, requires the three countries to hold a joint review after six years. Ebrard previously said he expected the review to start in the second half of the year, ahead of schedule. Marsh half-century in vain again, as Lucknow lose again Marsh half-century in vain again, as Lucknow lose again Mitch Marsh has signed off from the Indian Premier League with another half-century, and combined in a blistering 152-run partnership in 77 ****** with Rishabh Pant, but Justin Langer’s Lucknow Super Giants still lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The result meant RCB finished second in the regular season and earned a place in the qualifier play-off, where they will play Ricky Ponting’s Punjab Kings, rather than the eliminator. LSG’s expensively-recruited captain Pant, whose form has been dreadful, made an unbeaten 118 off 61 ****** and Marsh 67 off 37 as the home team piled up 3-227. But RCB knocked off the runs with six wickets and eight ****** to spare, achieving the third-highest run-chase in IPL history with 4-230. After Virat Kohli’s 54 off 30 ****** set the platform Jitesh Sharma blasted RCB to victory with 85 not out off 33 ******. New Zealand’s Will O’Rouke’s four overs cost 74 runs, for two wickets, two short of Jofra Archer’s unwanted record for the IPL’s most expensive bowling. The victor of RCB v Punjab on Thursday (local time) will go into Tuesday’s final while the loser will face the winner of Friday’s eliminator between Gujurat Titans and Mumbai Indians on Sunday. LSG have long been out of contention, finishing seventh, but Marsh ended the campaign with six fifties and a century, scoring 627 runs at 48.23 and a strike-rate of 163.70.
