Powell and the Fed won’t be able to avoid talking about Trump forever Powell and the Fed won’t be able to avoid talking about Trump forever Federal Reserve Board Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell speaks during a news conference following a Federal Open Market Committee meeting in Washington on November 07, 2024 in Washington, DC. Kent Nishimura | Getty Images Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell dodged question after question at his Thursday news conference from a press corps eager to elicit the central bank leader’s thoughts about President-elect Donald Trump. At some point, though, Fed policymakers, economists and analysts will need to account for what likely will be an ambitious economic — not to mention political — agenda from the firebrand ***********. Trump took a dim view of the Powell Fed during his first term in office, calling policymakers “boneheads” and once compared Powell to a golfer who couldn’t putt. Powell, who was nominated by Trump in November 2017 and took office the following February, largely shrugged off the criticism then, and he again deflected Thursday. “I’m not going to get into any of the political things here today, but thank you,” Powell said during the news conference after being asked at least half a dozen times about the Trump victory and its ramifications. Powell cut the session short around 3:12 p.m. ET, a few minutes earlier than normal following the round of politics-heavy questioning. However, dealing with the ramifications of a Trump presidency will be almost unavoidable for the Fed leader. Among the expected policy initiatives on the way are steep tax cuts, expansionary government spending and aggressive tariffs aimed at leveling a global playing field. Trump also has threatened mass deportations for undocumented immigrants, something that could alter the labor market landscape. How the Trump-Powell relationship unfolds this time is unclear — Powell’s term as chair is up in February 2026 — but it is likely to add another wrinkle into a delicate balance the Fed is trying to navigate with monetary policy. Differences in policies, politics “They’re going to get themselves in a bind here, because the communication is going to get much more difficult, and there’s going to be a new administration coming in with its own way of how to view policy,” said Joseph LaVorgna, chief economist at SMBC Nikko Securities. “It’s not clear to me that the Fed is going to have the same type of approach of what the [new] administration is doing, and that I think could set up a lot more tension,” he added. LaVorgna has a unique perspective on the situation, having served as chief economist for the National Economic Council under Trump. He could be headed back to Washington in 2025 for another stint in the White House. Like Trump, LaVorgna has been a Fed critic, though for a seemingly opposite reason as thinks the central bank made a mistake Thursday in lowering its benchmark interest rate by a quarter percentage point. LaVorgna instead advocated the Fed hold off until it can get a clearer picture of a muddied economic landscape with uncertainty over the direction of inflation and unemployment. Trump historically has favored lower rates, though that too could change if the Fed cuts and inflation rises. “What if, going forward, the outlook becomes more mixed?” Lavorgna said. “To me, it was obvious they shouldn’t be cutting. And then President Trump I think [could] properly ask, ‘Why are you cutting when things [with inflation] actually don’t look as solid as they might have before?'” Many economists think Trump’s policies could help stoke inflation at a time when signs are showing that, at least on a relative basis, the pace of price increases is easing back towards the Fed’s 2% target. Some of those economists already this week started marking up their inflation estimates and cutting their outlook for growth, despite a high level of uncertainty about what the Trump agenda will actually entail. Should those forecasts come true and inflation perk up, the Fed will have no choice but to respond, possibly by slowing the pace of rate cuts or stopping altogether. Uncertainty ahead While Powell avoided Trump talk, Wall Street commentary following the Fed’s decision Thursday to lower rates by another quarter percentage point addressed the potential fallout. “The upcoming year in Federal Reserve policy is going to be a remarkably interesting twelve months indeed,” wrote Joseph Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM. In a forecast that is close to the Wall Street consensus as well as the fed funds futures market, Brusuelas expects the Fed to lop another full percentage point off baseline rates in 2025. But that outlook could be subject to change. “This forecast is based on the economic status quo holding, all else being equal,” Brusuelas said. “Because we are entering an era of unorthodox economic populism, that forecast is subject to changes in both trade and immigration policy that could alter the path of employment, the unemployment rate and wage pressures that could cause an increase in the price level.” While some economists worry that Trump’s policies could cause major fallout, others are taking a more measured approach given the incoming president’s penchant for saber rattling. Despite implementing heavy tariffs that economists also feared would raise prices dramatically, inflation never topped 3% at any point during Trump’s term and in fact barely cracked 2% as judged by the Fed’s preferred indicator. Moreover, Biden kept Trump’s tariffs largely in place and even added some new ones on electric cars and other items. Ultimately, the next round of tariffs could add about 0.3% to inflation, according to Nationwide Chief Economist, Kathy Bostjancic. “We anticipate this should provide reason for the Fed to slow the rate of policy easing a bit, but not stop it,” she said. “Our call for substantive rate cuts over the next year would maintain the easing in financial market conditions that helps lower borrowing costs for consumers and businesses and continues to support the labor market and ongoing expansion.” Still, the prospect of the Fed asserting its independence and moving policy in either direction, irrespective of Trump’s wishes, sets up a potential clash. Trump previously has asserted that the president at least should be consulted on monetary policy. Fed officials, though, insist on independence from fiscal and political considerations, which could get tougher in the days ahead. “The easy cuts have been made, and maybe December won’t be too contentious either,” said Elyse Ausenbaugh, head of investment strategy at J.P. Morgan Wealth Management. “Thereafter, I imagine the Fed is asking the same questions as investors – to what extent and when will the incoming Trump administration implement its campaign policy proposals?” Don’t miss these insights from CNBC PRO Source link #Powell #Fed #wont #avoid #talking #Trump Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Why does our universe have something instead of nothing? Why does our universe have something instead of nothing? The universe is full of matter Mohd. Each month, we hand over the keyboard to a physicist or mathematician to tell you about fascinating ideas from their corner of the universe. You can sign up for Lost in Space-Time here. As an astrophysicist, I spend a lot of time thinking about nothing. Literally. HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 vs. Surface Pro 11: Which is best? HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 vs. Surface Pro 11: Which is best? Microsoft’s Surface Pro 11 epitomizes the detachable tablet form of 2-in-1 laptop, and it’s come a long way since the company first introduced the form factor over a decade ago. The newest model leveraged Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X chipset for strong performance and great battery life, making for the best version of the Surface Pro ever. But the more popular 2-in-1 format is the 360-degree convertible, where the keyboard flips around from clamshell through tent and media modes into a tablet. HP’s new OmniBook Ultra Flip 14, based on Intel’s new Core Ultra Series 2 chips, is one of the best laptops in this category. But here’s the question: Which makes for the better 2-in-1 experience? Specs and configurations HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 Microsoft Surface Pro 11th Edition Dimensions 12.35 x 8.51 x 0.59 inches 11.3 inches x 8.2 inches x 0.37 inches Weight 2.97 pounds 1.97 pounds (tablet only) CPU Intel Core Ultra 5 226V Intel Core Ultra 7 256V Intel Core Ultra 7 258V Intel Core Ultra 9 288V Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus (10-core) Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite (12-core) GPU Intel Arc 130V Intel Arc 140V Qualcomm Adreno RAM 16GB LPDDR5X RAM 32GB LPDDR5X RAM 16GB 32GB Display 14.0-inch 16:10 2.8K (2880 x 1800) OLED, 120Hz 13.o-inch 3:2 2.8K (2880 x 1920) IPS, 120Hz 13.0-inch 3:2 2.8K (2880 x 1920) OLED, 120Hz Storage 512TB SSD 1TB M SSD 2TB SSD 256GB SSD 512GB SSD 1TB SSD Ports 2 x USB-C with Thunderbolt 4 1 x USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 1 x 3.5mm headphone jack 2 x USB4 USB-C Surface Connect NanoSIM Touch Yes Yes Wireless Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 Optional 5G Webcam 9MP with infrared camera for Windows 11 Hello 1440p front-facing with infrared camera for Windows 11 Hello 10.5MP rear-facing Battery 64 watt-hour IPS: 48 watt-hour OLED: 53 watt-hour Operating system Windows 11 Windows 11 on Arm Price $1,450+ $1,000+ Rating 4 out of 5 stars 4.5 out of 5 stars The OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 starts at $1,450 for an Intel Core Ultra 5 226V chipset, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and a 14.0-inch 2.8K OLED display (the only option). But right now, it’s $400 off, making the base model a much more attractive $1,050. Upgrading to 1TB of storage costs $50 and 2TB is an additional $100. Fully configured, the OmniBook is $1,900 with a Core Ultra 7 258V, 32GB of RAM, and a 2TB SSD. That’s expensive, but again, it’s a lot more attractive at its ***** price. The Surface Pro 11 starts at $1,000 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus chipset, 16GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, and a 13.0-inch 2.8K IPS display. The 5Gb configuration is $1,300, and moving to a 512GB SSD with Wi-Fi only costs $1,200. Then, you can select the Snapdragon X Elite and a 13.0-inch 2.8K OLED display starting at $1,500 with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. With 32GB and a 1TB SSD, the cost is $2,100. The OmniBook is less expensive, especially if you can get it at its ***** price. Design Mark Coppock / Digital Trends As mentioned above, the OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 is a 360-degree convertible, and so it works best as a clamshell laptop while also offering some flexibility. It’s significantly thicker and heavier as a tablet than the Surface Pro 11 without its keyboard, although the two are closer together when the Surface Pro 11’s keyboard is attached. Both are well-built machines, and they serve as perhaps two of the best examples of their types. Aesthetically, the Surface Pro 11 is fairly simple, coming in four different colors — Platinum, Sapphire, Dune, and ****** — while the front is a simple ****** slate. It offers Surface Pro Flex keyboards that comes in just two colors, ****** and Bright Sapphire, so the colors don’t match perfectly. But it’s an attractive tablet overall. It has a flip-out keyboard that allows it to work as a decent clamshell when paired with the keyboard. The OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 is also attractive in one of two colors, dark blue and gray, and its notches on the rear of the chassis and bottom of the display add some elegance. The OmniBook’s keyboard is excellent, with large keycaps and a full-size layout that’s extremely comfortable. The switches are light and snappy. The Surface Pro 11’s keyboard is also very good, with a slightly cramped layout, but precise switches, although it does bounce a bit when it’s propped up for typing. Both have haptic touchpads that work extremely well, but the OmniBook’s version is considerably larger. And of course, both have touch- and pen-enabled displays, which the Surface Pro 11 maximizes for writing and drawing with haptic feedback that helps mimic writing on a sheet of paper. Connectivity is surprisingly similar, with both having dual high-speed ports, but the OmniBook adds in a USB-A port for legacy support. The Surface Pro 11 has its Surface Connect port for charging, which frees up a port for accessories compared to the OmniBook Ultra Flip 14. Both have fully up-to-date wireless, while the Surface Pro 11 adds in optional 5G connectivity. The OmniBook has a higher-resolution 9MP webcam compared to the Surface Pro 11’s 1440p version, and the Microsoft tablet also has a rear 10.5MP camera. Both have infrared cameras for Windows 11 Hello facial recognition. In addition, both have fast Neural Processing Units (NPUs) to fully support Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC AI initiative. HP offers its own AI Companion software that will bring additional AI functionality when it rolls out sometime in the near future. Performance Luke Larsen / Digital Trends Both 2-in-1s use brand-new chipsets, both aimed at efficiency. But the Surface Pro 11’s Qualcomm Snapdragon X in either Plus or Elite versions provides faster performance than the Intel Lunar Lake chipsets in the OmniBook Ultra Flip 14. That’s apparent in our suite of benchmarks, where we reviewed the faster Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite X1E-80-100 compared to the Intel Core Ultra 7 258V that’s near the top of Intel’s lineup. These laptops are both more than fast enough for demanding productivity users. Neither of them have integrated graphics that are fast enough for gaming or creative applications. The OmniBook comes with just one option, a 14.0-inch 2.8K OLED panel, also running at a fast 120Hz. That makes the Surface Pro 11’s display considerably sharper. We reviewed both 2-in-1s with OLED displays, and the Surface Pro 11’s version was considerably brighter while the OmniBook’s had wider and slightly more accurate colors. There’s a difference in the measured contrast, but both have perfect *******. Both of these displays are excellent and will please pretty much every user. Add in the keyboard, though, and they’re closer. Both are highly portable, but the Surface Pro 11 will be a lot more comfortable to use as a tablet. Battery life is the real difference here, though. Although it has a smaller battery, the Surface Pro 11 gets much better battery life. It’s more likely to get you through a full day’s work — and then some. Web Video HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 (Core Ultra 7 258V) 11 hours, 5 minutes 15 hours, 46 minutes Surface Pro 11 (Snapdragon X Elite X1E-80-100) 14 hours, 39 minutes 16 hours, 26 minutes The Surface Pro 11 pulls out ahead, barely The OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 is a great example of the convertible 2-in-1. It’s built well, looks great, has a great keyboard and touchpad, and its OLED display is awesome. It’s also less expensive if you can find it on *****, which was the case when this comparison is being written. However, the Surface Pro 11 is faster, and it gets better battery life. That’s pretty remarkable in a tablet that can function as a clamshell laptop. It’s more expensive, but it has some features, like a haptic active pen, that give it the slightest edge in this comparison. US authorities investigate ******* text messages US authorities investigate ******* text messages Authorities across the US are investigating after reports of text messages sent to ****** Americans with references to “****** catchers”, plantations and picking cotton. In a statement the FBI said it is “aware of the offensive and ******* text messages sent to individuals around the country and is in contact with the Justice Department and other federal authorities on the matter.” The source of the messages and the total number sent are unclear, however, there are reports that they were received in at least 15 states and Washington DC. Some of the messages mentioned the Trump campaign – which strongly denied any connection. Steven Cheung, a campaign spokesman, said: “The campaign has absolutely nothing to do with these text messages.” According to examples posted online and cited in news reports, the wording of the messages varied but generally instructed recipients to report to a “plantation” or wait to be picked up in a van, and referred to “******” labour. The messages appear to have started on Wednesday, the day after election day. Among the recipients were college students and children. In a statement Derrick Johnson, head of the civil rights group NAACP, said: “These actions are not normal.” “These messages represent an alarming increase in vile and abhorrent rhetoric from ******* groups across the country, who now feel emboldened to spread hate and stoke the flames of ***** that many of us are feeling after Tuesday’s election results,” Johnson said. Jessica Rosenworcel, chairwoman of the Federal Communications Commission, which is also investigating the messages, said: “These messages are unacceptable. We take this type of targeting very seriously.” The messages were reportedly received across southern states, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, California, Washington DC and others, US media say. One recipient, Hailey Welch, told a University of Alabama student newspaper that several students on the campus had also received the messages. “At first I thought it was a joke, but everyone else was getting them. People were texting, posting on their stories, saying they got them,” Ms Welch told The Crimson White. “I was just stressed out, and I was scared because I didn’t know what was happening.” In several states, top law enforcement officials said they were aware of the messages and encouraged residents to report them to the authorities if they received them. The office of Nevada’s attorney general said it was working to “probe into the source of what appear to be robotext messages”. The office of Louisiana’s attorney general said it had discovered that some of the messages could be traced back to a VPN in Poland, but that “no original source” had been found so far. NYT Mini Crossword today: puzzle answers for Friday, November 8 NYT Mini Crossword today: puzzle answers for Friday, November 8 The New York Times has introduced the next title coming to its Games catalog following Wordle’s continued success — and it’s all about math. Digits has players adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing numbers. You can play its beta for free online right now. In Digits, players are presented with a target number that they need to match. Players are given six numbers and have the ability to add, subtract, multiply, or divide them to get as close to the target as they can. Not every number needs to be used, though, so this game should put your math skills to the test as you combine numbers and try to make the right equations to get as close to the target number as possible. Players will get a five-star rating if they match the target number exactly, a three-star rating if they get within 10 of the target, and a one-star rating if they can get within 25 of the target number. Currently, players are also able to access five different puzzles with increasingly larger numbers as well. I solved today’s puzzle and found it to be an enjoyable number-based game that should appeal to inquisitive minds that like puzzle games such as Threes or other The New York Times titles like Wordle and Spelling Bee. In an article unveiling Digits and detailing The New York Time Games team’s process to game development, The Times says the team will use this free beta to fix bugs and assess if it’s worth moving into a more active development phase “where the game is coded and the designs are finalized.” So play Digits while you can, as The New York Times may move on from the project if it doesn’t get the response it is hoping for. Iranian operative charged in pre-election scheme to ************ Trump, other U.S. targets Iranian operative charged in pre-election scheme to ************ Trump, other U.S. targets An operative working for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps told federal investigators that he was tasked in September with “surveilling, and, ultimately, assassinating” President-elect Donald Trump, according to court records unsealed Friday. Prosecutors say Farhad Shakeri, who is believed to be residing in Iran, told investigators in a phone interview that unnamed IRGC officials pushed him to plan an ******* against Mr. Trump last month. If the plan could not come together in time, the Iranian officials directed Shakeri to delay the plot until after the presidential election because the official “assessed that [Mr. Trump] would lose the election,” charging documents revealed. Shakeri and two individuals living in the U.S. — Carlisle Rivera of Brooklyn, New York; and Jonathon Loadholt of Staten Island — were charged as part of a broad Iran-backed scheme to allegedly surveille and ultimately ************ individuals inside the U.S. who opposed the Iranian regime. FBI investigators wrote that Shakeri immigrated to the U.S. as a child from Iran, but was deported in 2008 after serving more than a decade in prison on robbery charges. They alleged the IRGC ultimately used Shakeri to recruit ********* contacts inside the U.S. to carry out specific operations like targeting an unnamed Iranian ********* journalist and activist living in New York. In February, prosecutors alleged Shakeri paid Rivera and Loadholt about $1,000 to monitor the activist — who has spoken out against Iran’s regime — at an event at Fairfield University in Connecticut. The surveillance operations continued into March, according to court documents, when the pair allegedly traveled multiple times to the activist’s Brooklyn home. Text messages, security camera footage and cell site location data revealed their numerous trips. “On or about April 1, 2024, 9 SHAKERI and RIVERA exchanged voice notes discussing RIVERA and LOADHOLT’ s efforts to locate and *******” the Iranian *********, court records said. “This b**** is hard to catch, bro,” Rivera allegedly said to Shakeri. “There ain’t gonna be no simple pull up, unless there[‘s] the luck of the draw.” According to court records, Shakeri allegedly responded later, “you just gotta have patience and don’t, kicking, kick in the door is not an option because that’s a fail, that’s a fail maneuver. You gotta wait and have patience to catch her either going in the house or coming out, or following her out somewhere and taking care of it. Don’t think about going in. In is a ******** move.” Investigators searched online accounts belonging to Rivera and Loadholt in the course of the federal probe and uncovered numerous images of firearms and other weapons. In April, Shakeri agreed to pay Rivera and Loadholt $100,000 to “finish the work” and said he was tasked by the IRGC to hire individuals to ************ the journalist. And by July, according to charging documents, the Iranians were growing impatient, instructing their U.S. assets to “take care of it already.” The alleged plot to ***** the activist did not succeed. Rivera and Loadholt are not accused of being part of the plot to target Mr. Trump. They made their initial appearance in federal court on Thursday and were ordered detained, according to the Justice Department. Shakeri ******** at large. “We will not stand for the Iranian regime’s attempts to endanger the ********* people and America’s national security,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement. The charges announced Friday are not the first brought against alleged operatives of the IRGC for plotting to ***** Mr. Trump. Earlier this year, the FBI arrested Asif Merchant for planning to ************ U.S. government officials, including potentially the president-elect. Merchant ******** in custody and pleaded not guilty. On at least five occasions between September and November, Shakeri participated in “voluntary telephonic interviews with FBI agents” in exchange for a sentence reduction for another individual serving time in the U.S, court records said. During the interviews, he allegedly told the FBI of the IRGC’s ******* to ***** the Iranian ********* activist and target ******** tourists in Sri Lanka with a mass ********* event. Shakeri also told investigators that the IRGC tasked him with surveilling two ******* ********* citizens living in New York, but he did not provide the Iranian officials with information about the unnamed targets. During the interview, Shakeri also allegedly told the FBI about the effort to target Mr. Trump. In a statement, FBI Director Christopher Wray said, “The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps — a designated foreign ********** organization — has been conspiring with ********** and hitmen to target and **** down Americans on U.S. soil and that simply won’t be tolerated.” The charges and allegations announced Friday are part of broader posture by U.S. intelligence and law enforcement to publicly bring attention to Iran’s alleged efforts to quiet dissidents on U.S. soil and target U.S. government figures after the ******** of IRGC General Qasem Soleimani by ********* forces in 2020. Mr. Trump and former members of his administration have been forced in recent years to increase his security due to the threats. The Justice Department has charged numerous other defendants in recent years with acting on behalf of Iran by targeting outspoken dissidents living in the U.S. Attorneys for Rivera and Loadholt were not immediately identified. Iranian charged in alleged plot to ***** Trump Iranian charged in alleged plot to ***** Trump The US government has brought charges against an Iranian man in connection with an alleged plot to ************ Donald Trump before he was elected the next president. The Department of Justice on Friday unsealed an indictment against Farhad Shakeri, 51, alleging he was tasked with “providing a plan” to ***** Trump. The US government said Mr Shakeri has not been arrested and is believed to be in Iran. In a ********* complaint filed in Manhattan court, prosecutors allege that an official in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard directed Mr Shakeri in September to devise a plan to surveil and ***** Trump. “The Justice Department has charged an asset of the Iranian regime who was tasked by the regime to direct a network of ********* associates to further Iran’s ************** plots against its targets, including President-elect Donald Trump,” US Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement. The justice department added that it had charged two others also allegedly recruited to ***** an ********* journalist who was an outspoken critic of Iran. The other two individuals were identified by the justice department as Carlisle Rivera, also known as “Pop”, 49, from Brooklyn, and Jonathon Loadholt, 36, from Staten Island. The two appeared in court in the Southern District of New York on Thursday and are being detained pending a trial. According to prosecutors, Mr Shakeri told them that he did not intend to propose a scheme to ***** Trump within the timeframe the Iranian government wanted, so officials in the *********** Guard paused the plan. Mr Shakeri was asked to come up with a plan to ***** Trump in seven days, the indictment alleges. If he was unable to do so, Mr Sakeri said Iranian Revolutionary Guard officials told him it would be easier to try to ************ Trump after the election, because they believed he would lose, prosecutors said. In addition to the ********* journalist and Trump, the indictment alleges the Iranian government sought to ***** two ******* ********* businesspeople living in New York City, who were supportive of ******* on social media. Mr Shakeri also told prosecutors that his Iranian contacts asked him to plan a mass ********* event to target ******** tourists in Sri Lanka in October 2024, a year after the ****** attacks on *******. Watch elephants use a hose to shower themselves – and prank others Watch elephants use a hose to shower themselves – and prank others Elephants are masters at using a hose – considered a complex tool because of its flexibility, length and the physics of flowing water. Researchers studying three ****** elephants (Elephas maximus) at Berlin Zoo were surprised to see how nimbly they manipulated a hose to shower themselves and seemed to understand how to get the best use out of it. They even appeared to play pranks on each other by stopping the flow mid-shower – either by kinking the hose or compressing it with their trunks. To reach more distant parts of the body, the elephants used a lasso-like technique, holding the hose further from the end and swinging it over their backs. Michael Brecht at the Humboldt University of Berlin says the elephant behaviour around hoses reminded the team of the way children might play together. “Elephants are exceptionally good with hoses and we very much wonder if this is related to the functional similarity of trunks and hoses,” he says. Just as humans are either left-handed or right-handed, ******** and ****** elephant individuals are either left or right “trunkers”, preferring to bend their trunk in one direction. The researchers noticed that the elephants also had a side preference when they manipulated the hose. One of the elephants, named Mary, used her trunk for showering the right side of her body but used the hose more for the left side. Another of the elephants, named Anchali, showed five different behaviours to disrupt water flow when Mary was trying to shower – hose positioning, lifting, kinking, regrasping the ***** and compressing. “This sabotage-like behaviour, if that’s what it is, has been seen in only very few animals,” says Brecht. Brecht’s previous research suggests elephant trunks are one of the most sensitive body parts in the animal kingdom, enabling them to handle objects with similar precision to the human hand. “The research reiterates the idea that elephants show very sophisticated trunk behaviours,” he says. Government announces Green Paper on future of scandal-ridden Post Office Government announces Green Paper on future of scandal-ridden Post Office The government is to publish a Green Paper to gather information to help decide the Post Office’s future following the Horizon IT scandal and its aftermath. Gareth Thomas, the small business minister responsible for the Post Office, said the consultation document will consider what customers, communities and postmasters would like to see from a modern Post Office network. It will also seek views on how to change the culture within the Post Office, often cited as a cause of the Horizon scandal. Labour made a manifesto commitment to examine ways to strengthen the Post Office network and now in government, Thomas has outlined the next steps. A Green Paper is a mechanism for the government to consult a wide variety of the public and parliamentarians on policy and legislative proposals. Thomas said in a written statenent to the House of Commons: “While we continue to address the past, now is also the time to consider the future of the Post Office… The ***-wide Post Office branch network is an essential part of the ***’s economic infrastructure, supporting high streets, businesses, and contributing directly to the government’s mission to kick start economic growth.” He said the Post Office is a public asset and the public must have their say on the future direction. “As such, government plans to publish a Green Paper to seek the public’s views on a range of different proposals in the first half of 2025,” he added. “Given the complexity and scale of some of the challenges being faced by the Post Office, the Department [for Business and Trade] has appointed external consultants to support this work.” During his appearance at the Post Office Horizon scandal public inquiry on 8 November, Thomas said Boston Consulting Group would support the review. He also said plotting the Post Office’s future and changing its culture is one of government’s three priorities for the organisation alongside “getting compensation to victims of the scandal more quickly” and finding any gaps in the financial redress schemes. Thomas was asked by the inquiry about changing the Post Office culture. He said the Green Paper would ensure that “a wide variety of people can help us reach a judgement on how we improve the culture.” Charles Donald, CEO at *** Government Investments, the body which oversees the government’s relationship with the Post Office as its sole shareholder, followed Thomas into the witness box at the inquiry. He was asked whether the Post Office could be self-sufficient in the future and not rely on public money to operate. He said this would require cost cutting and for network reduction to be considered. “I would say [self-sufficiency] is an appropriate aim, but I struggle to see [it] with the structure in place at the moment. Particularly with the scale of the network obligation and then the cost structure. I think consideration would need to be given to both those issues in order to produce a sustainable business,” Donald said. Reducing the branch network has long been a controversial topic. He added that the Post Office board relies on government funding to continue as a going concern. According to former Post Office minister Kevin Hollinrake, addressing cost cutting at the Post Office was difficult. In his inquiry session, he described conversations with outgoing CEO Nick Read about cutting central costs, as being like “drawing teeth”. This was despite 143 managers and executives earning more than £100,000 a year. The Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry is now in its seventh and final phase, which is focusing on the Post Office’s current practice and procedure, as well as recommendations for the future. Computer Weekly first exposed the scandal in 2009, revealing the stories of seven subpostmasters and the problems they suffered due to Horizon accounting software, which led to the most widespread miscarriage of justice in British history (see below timeline of Computer Weekly articles about the scandal since 2009). A Solid PC Port Shows How Red Dead Still Holds Up in 2024
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
A Solid PC Port Shows How Red ***** Still Holds Up in 2024 A Solid PC Port Shows How Red ***** Still Holds Up in 2024 Fourteen years after its initial release, Red ***** Redemption has finally landed on PC. The PC port is, without a doubt, the best way to play Rockstar’s open-world Western. Rockstar and co-developer Double Eleven have added a handful of graphical features and improvements that make this the smoothest and most beautiful version of Red ***** Redemption to date. These visual improvements accentuate an already excellent tale that has unquestionably withstood the test of time. I’ve spent roughly 20 hours exploring each of the game’s major regions on max settings with an ultrawide monitor, and it is sublime. Red ***** Redemption was praised in 2010 for its impeccable atmosphere, and that ******** intact after all these years. The rhythmic thumping of hooves echoing throughout the plains as the early morning sun peeks through the clouds is just as intoxicating as it was in 2010. Moments like this are frequent in Red ***** Redemption and the improved visuals and performance further enhance these highs. You need a javascript enabled browser to watch videos. While impressive at the time, the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Red ***** Redemption look as though anything outside of protagonist John Marston’s immediate vicinity has a blurry filter over it. Like 2023’s PS5 version, the PC port uses the extra horsepower to fill out those details to create a much cleaner image. When paired with the PC port’s native 4K resolution, Red ***** Redemption hardly looks its age. Eagle-eyed players may notice a few objects and textures that still look a little muddy, such as a couple side characters or the collectible herbs that dot the frontier, but it’s easy to forget when you’re riding through the golden plains of West Elizabeth. The star of the show, though, is Red ***** Redemption’s ultrawide support. Seeing this world from a 21:9 perspective goes hand-in-hand with Red ***** Redemption’s themes and cinematic inspirations. Slowly approaching Fort Mercer in the game’s opening hour feels like it could have taken straight from Sam Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch or Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven. The wider aspect ratio gives the entire experience a sparse, desolate feel that matches the atmosphere beautifully. The ultrawide presentation does have one noticeable issue: The game’s cutscenes are still rendered in a 16:9 aspect ratio. While a 21:9 aspect ratio could ruin the framing of some shots, it’s a shame Rockstar and Double Eleven haven’t given players the option to change this, especially since modders have already addressed this very issue. Seeing some of the game’s most iconic cutscenes in a cinematic, ultrawide format without having to install mods would have been a welcome addition. As solid as this port is, it does feel barebones. Most notably, the PC port–like 2023’s Switch and PS5 versions–removes the game’s original multiplayer and cooperative components. Given server costs and upkeep, I understand why Rockstar and Double Eleven wouldn’t want to resuscitate multiplayer, but it’s a shame to see it missing considering how its open-world structure ***** the groundwork for the wildly popular GTA Online. At the time, Red *****’s multiplayer modes took a big swing at what a social multiplayer experience could be, and it’s disappointing that that ambition isn’t represented here. Additionally, the lack of a photo mode in particular is a missed opportunity. So much work has been put into the visuals, and a photo mode could have really highlighted those graphical improvements. However, what’s impressed me the most about revisiting Red ***** Redemption after all these years isn’t its visuals or performance, but its stellar writing. Red ***** Redemption manages to juggle several complex themes in a way that feels authentic. Characters–although introduced and discarded quickly–are colorful, witty, and exuberant. Many of them cynically personify the vices, virtues, and myths of the ********* Dream and the untamed West. Nigel West Dickens is quite literally a snake-oil salesman parading as a dignified capitalist, while Landon Ricketts is a washed-up gunslinger who’s gone south to feed his savior complex. Although John’s ******* quest for redemption amounts to a very long list of errands, the vivid characters and clever dialogue keep the adventure from ever feeling stale. John Marston’s stint in Mexico ******** a highlight given how messy the politics, leaders, and allegiances are. Marston embodies ********* interventionism as he ping-pongs between causes in order to hunt down his former gang member Bill Williamson, an objective that feels so narrow-minded when compared to the chaos and bloodshed unfolding in front of him. It’s hard not to feel uncomfortable as John aids and abets both sides of a ******* revolution, but this discomfort is what makes Red *****’s themes and its ending hit so hard. This is all punctuated by Marston’s often endearing and simplistic philosophical diatribes about freedom, war, good, evil, human nature, fatherhood, masculinity, and so on. Red ***** Redemption is a sprawling epic that stands shoulder to shoulder with some of the greatest Westerns of all time. If you’ve never played it, the PC release is the perfect time to give it a shot. However, if you’ve already played Red ***** Redemption or picked up 2023’s PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch port, there’s not much else here besides improved visuals. Ultrafast imaging technique reveals how ozone-damaging molecule reacts to light Ultrafast imaging technique reveals how ozone-damaging molecule reacts to light A long-predicted ultrafast pathway in the UV photochemistry of bromoform is visualized for the first time by femtosecond time-resolved electron diffraction. Credit: Melody Li, Debadarshini Mishra, and Lars Hoffmann For the first time, researchers have observed how bromoform rearranges its atoms in less than a trillionth of a second after it gets hit by an ultraviolet (UV) pulse. The imaging technique captured a long-predicted pathway by which the ozone-layer-damaging molecule transforms its structure upon interaction with light. Energy from the sun’s UV rays induces many chemical processes on Earth. To understand, use, or mitigate damage from these often ultrafast chemical reactions, it’s vital to understand how they work at the atomic level. “How do the electrons and atoms talk to each other to make a certain chemical reaction happen? Bromoform is a prominent model system for answering these questions,” said Oliver Gessner, a senior scientist at the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab). Chemists around the world have studied the UV photochemistry of bromoform for decades. The natural compound breaks down ozone in Earth’s atmosphere, and is naturally produced by phytoplankton and seaweeds in the oceans. Theory says that it undergoes two different processes under UV exposure: in dissociation, one bromine atom breaks away from the rest of the molecule; in isomerization, the atoms rearrange into a different configuration or isomer. “Some claim to have observed signatures of this isomer, but it was too short-lived to prove,” said Gessner, who leads the Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Sciences Program in the Chemical Sciences Division at Berkeley Lab. Moreover, different theories have widely different predictions of the proportion of bromoform that follows each pathway. In a study published in the Journal of the ********* Chemical Society, Gessner and his colleagues developed an experiment that not only confirmed this isomer formation but determined what proportion of bromoform molecules undergo dissociation and what proportion form isomers. The researchers first excited bromoform gas molecules with an ultrafast burst of UV light (267 nanometer wavelength), then imaged the excited molecules with ultrashort electron pulses using the relativistic ultrafast electron diffraction instrument at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The instrument is part of the Linac Coherent Light Source at SLAC, a Department of Energy Office of Science user facility. “The molecules decide within a few hundred femtoseconds which way they go, so we had to be faster than that,” said Gessner. From the electron images, the researchers could measure the distances between atoms within the bromoform molecules and track how these distances changed over time. The analysis showed that approximately 60% of bromoform molecules underwent isomerization within the first 200 femtoseconds of excitation and persisted for the duration of the 1.1-picosecond-long experiment. “It was really exciting to see exactly the configuration that some people had predicted for this isomer,” Gessner said. The other 40% of the bromoform underwent direct dissociation. The result is an important step toward understanding bromoform photochemistry, and UV-induced photochemistry in general. “The sequence of chemical pathways impacts the final chemical products,” said Gessner. The benchmark measurement for a long debated isomer formation rate makes it possible to refine theories that predict these reactions and their products. Moreover, the study demonstrates that the ultrafast technique is good for providing clear-cut answers to questions about how fast isomers populate and how long they live. That, said Gessner, is a very powerful tool. As if Intel didn’t have enough to worry about, Nvidia might be about to jump into the PC processor market As if Intel didn’t have enough to worry about, Nvidia might be about to jump into the PC processor market New report that Nvidia might enter consumer CPU market It would most likely be Arm’s based Chips could be announced in 2025 and launch 2026 Intel and AMD currently have a stranglehold on the PC processor market, as the vast majority of consumers’ PC processors come from these two manufacturer. But if this latest report is true, that duopoly could soon be challenged. According to a new report from DigiTimes (reported on by PCGamesN), Nvidia may be planning to enter the consumer processor market by developing a new Arm-based CPU. Currently, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips have exclusive rights to Windows on Arm; however, according to Arm CEO Rene Haas, that’s set to change in 2024 with the recent news of that deal ending. There’s also the possibility stemming from Arm threatening to cancel Qualcomm’s Arm license, not to mention the rumors of Qualcomm potentially buying Intel. While there’s no definitive answer for when this processor will launch, if ever, the report from Digitimes states that an announcement of the Nvidia chips could happen in September 2025, with a possible launch date of March 2026. How much further can Nvidia push it? It sounds like a smart move from Team Green, as it could use its vast reputation in the PC world to further push into the PC processor market and give Intel and AMD some much needed competition. However, the lack of an x86 license might pose an issue for Nvidia. There’s a chance that it could be acquired through Qualcomm, if the two manufacturers join up and the rumors about the latter purchasing Intel become a reality. Then there’s also the possibility that Team Green could be heading into the gaming processor market, which would pair nicely with its already dominant graphics cards. Of course, such an endeavor would take quite a bit of investment as Nvidia would have to dedicate a lot of resources to porting games to the Arm architecture. And though the performance has proven to be well-optimized and impressive in its own right, Windows on Arm is still unsupported natively by most PC software and games, a hurdle that also holds back gaming on Macs. But if Valve could get a host of PC games to support Linux through SteamOS for the Steam Deck, then there’s definitely a chance that Nvidia could push for the same for Arm. Navigating the challenges of AI in education Navigating the challenges of AI in education Credit: Unsplash/CC0 Public Domain The advent of advanced AI models like ChatGPT has precipitated a transformative shift in knowledge acquisition and exploration, posing significant challenges to traditional educational concepts and methodologies. An article in Frontiers of Digital Education explores the multifaceted impact of AI on education and proposes strategies to navigate these challenges effectively. The work is titled “Educational Concepts and Methodologies in the AI Era: Challenges and Responses.” The traditional emphasis on exam scores and knowledge dissemination is increasingly at odds with the demands of the AI era. The ability of AI to automate routine tasks and generate vast amounts of information necessitates a shift in focus towards the cultivation of skills that are uniquely human, such as critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving. ******** to adapt to this changing landscape risks rendering our educational systems obsolete, failing to equip students with the tools they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving world. One crucial strategy for addressing these challenges is integrating the History and Philosophy of Science (HPS) into science education. By exploring the evolution of scientific ideas and the methods employed by scientists, students gain a deeper understanding of the scientific process and the role of inquiry and discovery. This approach encourages a spirit of curiosity and develops critical thinking skills essential for navigating the complexities of the AI era. Furthermore, emphasizing philosophy education can provide students with the tools for logical reasoning and critical analysis, crucial for evaluating information and making informed decisions. Philosophy education encourages students to question assumptions, engage in meaningful discourse, and develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them. While technology offers powerful tools for personalized learning and teaching, educators must be mindful of its limitations. A balanced approach, leveraging technology while preserving the human element of education, is crucial. Teachers play a vital role in guiding students, fostering meaningful interactions, and inspiring a love of learning. By integrating HPS, philosophy education, and a balanced approach to technology integration, educators can prepare students to thrive in the AI era, equipping them with the skills and mindset necessary to confront the challenges and opportunities of the future. One chart that should make Apple bulls worry and think about trimming One chart that should make Apple bulls worry and think about trimming The almighty Apple, despite making new 52-week highs and all-time highs as recently as two weeks ago, continues to struggle versus its peer group. In fact, Apple’s relative performance to the tech sector peaked more than two years ago — in Q3 2022 — and has not improved in any meaningful way. The exact date of Apple’s relative performance peak was Sept. 27 2022. Since then, Apple (AAPL) is +49.9% while the SPDR Technology Select Sector ETF (XLK) is +92.7%. Said differently, $1,000,000 invested in Apple at the end of Q3 2022 is now worth $1,049,900, while $1,000,000 invested in the S & P 500 Technology Sector ETF (XLK) is now worth $1,092,700. The relative performance chart below tells the tale. We would continue to reduce exposure to Apple, for those who are long. -Carter Braxton Worth For actionable recommendations via email and live nightly videos become a member at worthcharting.com DISCLOSURES: (None) All opinions expressed by the CNBC Pro contributors are solely their opinions and do not reflect the opinions of CNBC, NBC UNIVERSAL, their parent company or affiliates, and may have been previously disseminated by them on television, radio, internet or another medium. Weight loss ***** race heats up with obesity pill data Weight loss ***** race heats up with obesity pill data Aykut Karahan | Istock | Getty Images A version of this article first appeared in CNBC’s Healthy Returns newsletter, which brings the latest health-care news straight to your inbox. Subscribe here to receive future editions. Happy Friday! ******* in the election news this week was new data from drugmakers vying to enter the booming weight loss ***** market. Pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca and biotech company Viking Therapeutics were among the companies that presented encouraging data on their obesity pills and other treatments at the ObesityWeek conference in San Antonio, Texas, in recent days. Wall Street is ******** that the new wave of growth in the obesity space will be driven by pills that could offer more convenience and potentially fewer side effects, which could keep patients on the drugs for longer. Analysts expect the weight loss ***** market to be worth more than $100 billion by the end of the decade as more treatments emerge and help meet the demand that existing injections from Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly are still struggling to keep up with. Here’s what some of the data on the pills looked like. People who took the highest dose of Viking’s daily pill lost an average of 6.8% of their body weight after 28 days when compared to those who received a placebo, according to results from an early-stage study on 92 people. That outperformed investors’ expectations of 5% to 6% weight loss when compared to a placebo, William Blair analyst Andy Hsieh said in a note on Monday. That bar was set by an experimental pill from Novo Nordisk that demonstrated 5% weight loss in four weeks, he noted. Hsieh also said Viking’s pill showed a “highly benign tolerability profile,” referring to how well patients tolerated the *****. Six of nine participants on the highest dose of the ***** experienced mild nausea, while just one experienced vomiting. That could potentially be an advantage over existing injections for obesity, which can cause gastrointestinal side effects so uncomfortable that they drive some patients to stop treatment. Still, some analysts questioned whether Viking could capture a large share of the competitive market for weight loss drugs, particularly raising concerns about its ability to manufacture enough of its drugs as a small company. “We’re not saying it’s impossible for Viking to manufacture, however we think it will be costly with capital requirements and expertise beyond what Lilly and Novo currently have,” Deutsche Bank analyst James Shin said in a note on Monday. But Hsieh said he believes Viking offers “a unique set of attractive characteristics in the lens of big pharma.” There’s already been speculation around the potential for Viking to get bought out by a large pharmaceutical company. Apart from its pill, Viking is developing a weight loss injection and other treatments. The office building of biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca is being seen in Shanghai, China, on May 23, 2024. Nurphoto | Getty Images Meanwhile, AstraZeneca said its experimental obesity pill was well-tolerated by patients with Type 2 diabetes in an early study, as it presented data from several studies on three new treatments during the conference. AstraZeneca, after it announced last year it would license the once-daily pill from ******** drugmaker Eccogene, said it believed the pill could cause fewer side effects than injectable treatments from Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly. Patients with diabetes lost 5.8% of their body weight over four weeks of treatment with AstraZeneca’s pill. Some analysts said it was difficult to compare the data to other weight loss drugs since AstraZeneca’s study was small and tested on diabetic patients rather than those with obesity. Still, AstraZeneca has said it believes its pill is differentiated from other therapies in development and on the market, particularly given how well it was tolerated by patients. It’s becoming clearer how Ukraine’s first ******* on North Korean troops went down It’s becoming clearer how Ukraine’s first ******* on North Korean troops went down Ukrainian forces have struck North Korean troops in Russia’s Kursk region, marking a new phase in the war. A Ukrainian official said the troops were wearing Russian uniforms and hit by an artillery strike. He said that since the first *******, there had been daily battles around Ukrainian-held Sudzha. A Ukrainian official gave Business Insider further details about the first clashes between Ukrainian and North Korean troops in Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukraine launched a cross-border counteroffensive in August. Andrii Kovalenko, the head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation, said on Monday that “the first North Korean troops have already come under ***** in Kursk Oblast.” This was later confirmed by Ukraine’s defense minister, Rustem Umerov, who called it a “small engagement.” Rustem said the skirmish signaled decisively that North Korea had joined the conflict. In remarks sent to ***, Kovalenko gave more details about the *******. “It was an ordinary combat engagement in the Kursk region,” he said, describing how Ukrainian forces conduct reconnaissance, identify ****** positions, and launch strikes. He said Ukrainian forces knew that North Korean troops wearing Russian uniforms had been distributed across various Russian army units in the region for training under combat conditions. “An artillery strike was launched against a position where Russians and North Korean military personnel were located,” he said. Kovalenko added that it wasn’t an isolated incident. He said “daily battles” were now occurring in the area around Sudzha, a Ukraine-held town at the center of its push into the region. “Of course, shelling of the positions occurs daily,” he said. On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said North Korean soldiers — which Ukraine says number 11,000 — had already suffered losses in Kursk. Kovalenko said the North Koreans were being given “a few weeks” of training before being sent to live combat positions. He said they posed “a serious threat that requires additional resources from our forces.” He also said some were being given training in using reconnaissance and strike drones, skills that present a future risk to South Korea. Once back in North Korea, they could use their new drone know-how “for future ********** actions in the border areas with South Korea,” he said. *** was unable to independently confirm Kovalenko’s account. In recent weeks, Ukrainian intelligence has shared details of the military equipment it says Russia has issued to North Koreans, including mortars, rifles, machine guns, and anti-tank missiles. North Korea experts told *** the military partnership between Moscow and Pyongyang was a win-win for both countries. But on a practical level, they also spoke of the logistical difficulties of combining two militaries. This includes the conditions the troops will probably be cooperating under — including language issues, strains of racism from some Russian troops, as well as close supervision from North Korean officials to make sure they don’t desert. Ukrainian intelligence also recently shared what it said was intercepted audio of Russian servicemen discussing the coming Korean troops in a conversation that suggested a chaotic start to North Koreans joining Russia’s ******.
